Discussions about the various aspects of making both physical and electronic Table Top RPG products. We talk with artists, writers, editors and game designers about their process, what they do, and how to hire them. We also look at the details of making your products available to your audience, including a look at printing your own products, how to publish on DriveThru RPG, as well as running a KickStarter.
Along the way we will ramble about other things of interest or hot topics.
Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a quasi–weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
Today, Luau Lou of Dandyline Games joins me and we about our projects. On the table are issues we face and our thought processes as we progress through producing game products. The struggle is real, sisters and brothers. We probably generate more questions than answers.
Also, as referenced in the show, Lou had a podcast he cohosts called This Ol’ Dungeon. The premise is simple, chit chat in the beginning and discussion of an old adventure at the end. This is following the mullet model of podcasting, business up front and party in the back. The discussion of the old adventures contains a tour of what they like and what renovations they would make to improve it.
It is time to get on with this podcast. Sisters and brothers, it is time to get rambling.

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a quasi–weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
Today, Matt Thompson of Critical Hit Parader joins me. Matt has found a creative niche lying at the intersection of RPGs and his love for music. We all know that those two great tastes taste great together, but it took a catalyst to make that happen. Matt is that catalyst. Warning alert, this is a very ramble-y episode full of music discussion and sporadic doses of RPG musings.
The stadium is filled and our guitars are tuned. Sisters and brothers, it is time to get rambling.

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a semi–weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
Today, Megan Goins joins me to discuss an upcoming Kickstarter project that she is doing with her friend, Terry Azamber. This is a solo journaling game called Terra Arcis. The game places a player takes the role of a person entering the land of the fey to find their lost brother. It is a race against time and the devious denizens of the fey’s twisted world. Besides writing prompts the game features a number of interesting mechanics.
In typical Rambler fashion we cover a number of topics including AI’s impact on teaching, the challenges of marketing, and how the fundamentals of writing a good story can inform good game design.
There is more, so listen to find out. Sisters and brothers, it is time to get rambling.

Zoom Summary
=============
Quick recap
Jeff and Zac had a wide-ranging discussion about various topics. They touched upon an AI feature that could summarize their discussions, the influence of the holiday season on workplace motivation, and the differences between Fifth Edition and Old School Essentials in role-playing games. They also discussed the complexities of designing balanced monsters for high-level play in a game, the mechanics of a tactical game, the evolution of a game, project management, and diversifying their sales channels. They also reflected on a recent gaming event, emphasizing the evolving inclusivity and acceptance in the gaming community.
Summary
Jeff and Zac discussed an AI feature that could summarize their discussions. They also touched upon running con adventures, the topic of GA 4, and a comparison between D&D and OSE. The influence of the holiday season on workplace motivation was discussed, with Jeff sharing an anecdote about an unfamiliarity with American holidays. Jeff then shifted the conversation to their projects. A discussion about the differences between Fifth Edition and Old School Essentials (OSE) in role-playing games ensued, with Jeff noting the increased importance of killing monsters when treasure types are removed, and Zac emphasizing the shift of focus towards story milestones. The challenges of converting games from one system to another were also discussed.
OSE and 5E - Radically Different Design sensibilities
Designing Balanced Monsters for High-Level Play
Zac and Jeff had a detailed discussion about the complexity of designing balanced monsters for high-level play in a game. They highlighted the challenge of designing monsters that could neutralize half the party members without making them too powerful. They also discussed the intricacies of running a creature, the various types of damage dealt, and the difficulties in translating these from one game system to another. The conversation also touched on the impact of game design and terminology on the player experience and the difficulty of crafting epic stories during gameplay. They ended the discussion with a debate on the nature of tactical games and the potential compromise to the tactical experience if a character starts as a hero.
Tactical Game Mechanics and D20 System Discussion
Zac and Jeff engaged in a detailed conversation about the mechanics of a tactical game, specifically focusing on the impact of damage and the potential for players to deal damage even when missing their target. They also discussed the potential frustrations players can experience when using the D20 system. Zac expressed skepticism about a proposed solution to these issues, while Jeff was interested in exploring alternatives. They also touched on the potential of Matt Colville's game, despite not being keen on playing it themselves. The discussion concluded on the benefits of different celebrity entertainers in the space shifting from D&D to other systems, as it opens up the audience to experience other ways of addressing game play issues.

We move past the veil and discuss the cool things he made and the fun projects slated for the future. I suggest you check out his website and take a listen to some of the songs he recorded.
The bounty is on the move. Sisters and brothers…It is time to get rambling.

Journey into Adventure Writing - with Donn Stroud.
At the end of episode 131 of RPG Ramblings, I put Donn on the spot. I asked him to do a brainstorming session. This episode is that session. Caught flat-footed, he did a valiant job in spit-balling. We take the germ of an idea and develop it further. I plan to have different guests on the show to further develop this adventure. Follow along brave traveller, The Pulsating Crypt of the Crocodile God awaits.

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This is a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
Except this week I don’t have any guests. I planned to connect with two people this week, but my vacation threw off my groove more than I anticipated.
Friday, the day before I normally drop an episode, I was empty-handed, having failed the most basic task of scheduling a guest. Then the idea hit me. Why not have episodes on adventure creation sprinkled in with my regular episodes?
Just to be clear, I have very little experience in writing adventures. By little I mean, I wrote one. Saying it was mediocre is being generous. But I will not let ignorance impede my hubris. It is not enough to write an adventure, it must be worthy of publishing. That is the goal of this series, to come up with an idea and see it all the way through the process.
But, I will not do it alone. I will get help from guests and from you, the listeners, because when it comes to adventure writing, I only have questions.
I have no idea the direction this series will take, it is as much of a mystery for me as it is for you.
Don’t worry folks, this is not supplanting the normal RPG Ramblings podcasts…..I will be jumping back and forth.
It is seven thirty, Saturday morning. Adventure awaits. Sisters and Brothers, it is time to get rambling.

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This is a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
John Watts of Independence Games is a publisher producing content for an OGL variant of the Traveller rule set known as The Cepheus Engine. He supports several genres, including westerns. He has a massive amount of Clement Sector books currently on Bundle of Holding site. You better get in on it now, because it ends in a few days.
John explains the Traveller OGL, Cepheus Engine SRD, the Cepheus Engine OGL, and how the looming de-authorization of the WoTC’s OGL threatens the balance. This show can’t always be about happy stuff, we need gloomy weather to make us appreciate the sunshine.
Oh! I have Kickstarter going live next week. Scoundrels of Brixton. Go click the NOTIFY ME AT LAUNCH button…that will send a ray of joy into my heart.
The sun is rising; it is time to saddle-up. Sisters and Brothers, it is time to get rambling.

Scoundrels of Brixton is launching soon. This is a gritty sci-fi setting that we will develop through a series of zines. Click the link below and join the cool kids.

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
Today, Jacob Hurst joins me, and we talk about what life is like being a small publisher in the vendor hall of a convention. Of course we talk about other things….and we even get a bit “cheeky.” Hold onto that pun so you can punch your bingo card later in the episode.
There was a gap in recordings. The ending of a Kickstarter, fulfilling of two Kickstarters and the soon-to-launch Kickstarter took up all my free time. My day job was also grinding me up….so the podcast fell a wee bit behind, as my friends in Northern Ireland would say. Life is getting busier for me, and there may be occasional lapses from my weekly schedules, but don’t worry folks, that will just be me taking a breather.
The pre-campaign page is up for Scoundrels of Brixton. This is a gritty sci-fi setting that we will develop through a series of zines. I will put a link in the show notes so you can get notified when the project launches mid April
Enough talking… Sisters and brothers, lets see what this episode holds, It is time to get rambling.

Today Trevor Stamper, of The Smoking Warm fame, joins me to discuss why projects underperform. We take my recent Kickstarter, Fane of the Fly God, as an example and discuss my missteps. While not a failure, Fane was a passion project that was on the positive side of breaking even. Like a wise man conveyed to me, “Do you know which mistakes are the best ones to learn from? Someone else’s.”

I do have Patreon and for the price of 1 dollar a month, you too can join the ranks of the Rambling Elite, making the multiverse safe for podcasting.
This is the last show of the year. And what a crazy year it has been on levels personal, professional and everywhere in-between. Life is a mixture of tragedies and triumphs, bitter and sweet, hot and cold….even in Australia.

This week author Adam Kovac, and fellow podcaster Bob Loftin of Safeco fame, joins me to talk Traveller. More specifically, we discuss and ponder about what makes a Traveller adventure a Traveller adventure. It is easy to fall into the line of thinking proffered by the late Supreme Court Judge, Potter Stewart - “I know it when I see it” but I seek a more specific definition. I don’t know that we succeeded, but we tried.
Oh, Levi Combs has a Kickstarter going on Right now….or at least right now if you are listing right now. He was worried about running a project in December, a worry this is unfounded. Go search for “An Occurrence at Howling Crater” and back a winner.
I have Patreon and for the price of 1 dollar a month you not only support me, but you the full unedited show. Except, this show doesn’t have any outtakes either.

This week Vasili Kaliman joins to discuss art and a variety of other topics including Twitter and Midjourney. Funnily enough, I thought the Midjourney controversy fervor had died down….but the last week, emotions began raging anew.
I need to talk about the elephant in the room regarding this episode. It is nearly three hours long. That was unplanned. We ended the show and then kept talking. I figured I would go back later and cut the last portion out, but like a roll of scotch tape, I couldn’t find the ending. With all things going on, I just need to get this edited. The latter portion weaves in and out of various subject and goes from some personal chit chat to rumination of business related thoughts. If you don’t make it through the podcast, I don’t blame you. Three hours is crazy, even for me. That doesn’t even include the stuff we talked about before we got started.
I have Patreon and for the price of 1 dollar a month you not only support me, but you get outtakes from the show. Except there are no outtakes for this show. If there were…it would have been an additional hour of content because we kept rambling.

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
This week, Ralph Mazza joins me. A brother in need is a brother indeed…at least that is what I say. Ralph has been part of the RPG scene for a while and has a mathematical mind that is fun to pick and strong opinions that are fun to prod.
If you want to hear the full interview…became a patreon. For one dollar you can hear more of Ralph’s expositions from this week's episode, at least up to where the internet decided to censor him.
It has been a two week dry spell on podcasts, time to hitch up. Sisters and brothers, it is time to get rambling..

This week I have been dealing with a minor illness. That, combined with wrapping up Gary’s Appendix Kickstarter and prepping for future kickstarters has left me a bit strapped for time. Since my wife and I are vacationing next week in Cincinnati. We will see what happens with next weeks podcast.

He has a Patreon that I recommend you check out. For $2.50 you will have more stock art than you can shake a stick at. It is a deal you cannot afford to miss out on if you need artwork for your material. Various tiers give you other goodies.
Speaking of Patreon, I have one also. For one buck a month you can support the Rambling cause.

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
Today Tim Sattley, Mark Finn and Trevor Stamper joins me. This episode is borne out of the discussion we began on the RPG Ramblings Facebook page. There we were discussing some hurdles we faced, and it seemed like a good idea for us to discuss those roadblocks on the podcast to hopefully discover a way to collectively navigate a way through. What you get is a brainstorming session that may spark some thinking about your projects.
In the show notes is a link to my Patreon. For as low as one dollar a month you will can hear unedited portions of this podcast. For some episodes, that is a few minutes of extra content. For this episode, the raw file provides over twenty-six minutes of blatant nonsense. That is pennies per minute.
Alas, there are no Patreon adventures in today’s show…I am on vacation, but it turned into a working vacation. I hope to bring it back next week.

The large bubbles surfacing from deep have James a bit nervous, but Jon tells him to keep rowing and “If they get ‘et they get ‘et…worrying won’t change a thing.
As they near the white-sand beach, the mysterious Dieku is spotted and Russ and Stefan exchange worried glances wondering where the others are. Will there be more Patreon members to join the party next week? Stay tuned, dear listeners….

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people. This week I have a discussion with three interesting people: Doug Cole, James Floyd Kelly and Zack Goins. Three times the guests at the same low price. We were scheduled to gather on Wednesday to record a session about Kickstarter and marketing topics. The ZineQuest 4 announcements left the RPG Zine community on Facebook reeling. The implication of Kickstarter’s announcement is far-reaching. It shows how dependent community creators are upon this platform and also how precarious our standing is. The episode is a bit chaotic as we were all trying to come to terms with the situation and think about ways to deal with it.
Sisters and Brothers, it is time to step on board the anxiety train and get rambling.

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. Normally, this a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people…but this week it is just me.
I don’t have a shortage of upcoming guests, but trying to work a time for recording to fit my schedule has been quick. Saturday, I had an illustrious guest lined up, but my power went out before we went to record. It is Sunday morning. I don’t have any shows in the hopper and I am flying solo.
Sisters and Brothers, is time to get rambling.

This week Clay Notestine joins me, and we talk about a whole raft of subjects. We start by discussing his experience being on the ballot for an Ennie judge and from there we go free-range chicken. There were no fences to constrain us.
This is a long episode, so get comfortable sisters and brothers….it is time to get rambling.

Today I hang out with Diogo Nogueira, a prolific designer, writer and artists in the RPG industry. A lot has happened since we last talked, include his winning an Ennie for writing “The Halls of the Blood King.” We talk about adventure writing and discuss his newest project, Kosmosaurs. It is an RPG about dinosaurs who protect the Galaxy from Evil Forces. Sounds like it ticks all the boxes needed for having a good time.
Sisters and Brothers it is time to grab out plaster pistols, jump into our spaceship and get rambling.

This week I talk with James Shields, a popular artist in RPG circles. We talk about his art and how he prices. We discuss Patreon an how that works. And to top it off, we talk about his current Kickstarter where they are taking his 2d monster art and turning them into 3d models you can print at home.
But enough of talking about what I am to going to talk about. Sisters and brothers, it is time to get rambling

This week Trevor Stamper joins me. You may know him as one of the masterminds behind the zine series, “Tales of the Smoking Wyrm.” I am not sure how to title this episode, so I am settling on Shop Talk. After I ended the podcast, we kept talking. There was some good stuff in that section, so I tack that onto the end of the episode.

This week a group of us discuss our thoughts and we pondering questions regarding running Kickstarters. Running a project is very stressful and we are all seeking to improve our management of the Kickstarter. James Floyd Kelly, of Delver fame, hosted us on Zoom. Zac Goins, of Bite Sized Gaming, and Doug Cole, from Gaming Ballistics, rounded up the cast. Check the show notes for contact information and links. We do plan to do more of these in the future, but hopefully without the annoying buzz from my microphone.
Sisters and brothers, we have an action-packed episode so we better get rambling.

Today’s episode has clips from my discussions with both Stefan Surratt and Mark Finn. Normally, each episode has material from both the beginning and the end that gets clipped and tossed into the dustbin. But for this episode, I made use of the extra material. Through the use of early 19th century technology, I cut and spliced the tapes to give you this following episode. ,

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. Normally, this a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people. Due to scheduling issues I am flying solo.
This week I share my thoughts on the Delta Green game I am playing in. Even while playing I cannot shut my GM brain off. There are multiple good things I learned while participating in the game which I will share.
I did a quick overview of a new purchase I made - Kobolds Guide to Monsters.
I also discuss my next project and my thoughts on creature write ups…which doves tails into using a copy editor and swell as ProWriting aid.
Enough of that…..it is time to get rambling.

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
This week Tim Shorts joins me to talk about that grand TSR module from the eighties. The Dwellers of the Forbidden City. I don’t know WHY the city is forbidden. In fact, I don’t even know that it is forbidden. But what I do know is that it contains some wonderful elements that shine like bullywugs on a moonlit night.
The not so secret “secret” is that Tim and I are working on a re-imagining of this module. Not so much of a re-do as taking the themes presented in the module and do them in a different way.
While this project comes up in discussion, the primary focus is finding significant elements and talk about utilizing those principles in games we run or design.
Also, as a side note. I will be traveling for work next week so there likely will not be a podcast the following week. Actually, the difficulty of getting guests in a timely manner may cause me to consider moving this podcast to a fortnightly schedule. If there are gaps between show releases, you now know why.
Enough of the pre-show blather, it is time to get rambling.

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people. Well….except for today.
I have being doing a weekly show for six months. In fact, this episode is the 26th episode. I made a commitment to myself when starting this that I would do this for at least a year. The weekly schedule has been doable but it is a bit taxing…but I am committed to doing that for the rest of the year as life allows.
This week, the lining up of guests combined with my family schedule for this weekend made getting an episode out more difficult that I wanted to deal with.
For those that backed Scoundrels, the books are slotted for printing on June second and hopefully all the physical copies will be sent out before July.
I am working on a post apocalyptic product with some friends, and that is coming around nicely. I am sending the rough draft out to the copy editor this week. I am hoping to have a “MEGA-ZINE” ready for Kickstarter in the fall.
I am also working on fun supplement for Zine Quest 4, in 2022. It is a setting and magical supplement to add fly-themed devilishness to fantasy campaigns.
I also have a handful of other projects I will announce when I get closer.
Also….GameHole Con is coming. My room is reserved. I hope to see you all there. This is one of the few events I look forward to with anticipation.
To close this incredibly brief episode, please reach out and tell me what you like about the show. Is the weekly format good or is it just too much? Is there a person or topic that you would like to see on the show? I am doing the show each week in a vacuum chamber so feedback is welcome.
This is an anchor podcast so you can leave a voicemail through there. Or, you can leave a voice mail via my Google Voice number. (217) 731-4659
All this is in the show notes.
Sisters and Brothers, I bid you farewell until next week.

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This a weekly show exploring the various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
This week Steve Perrin joins me and we talk about his history with gaming. For those of you who don’t recognize the name, he was a member of the team that developed the revolutionary game, Runequest. He also authored the ElfQuest RPG, SuperWorld RPG and Robot Warriors for the Hero System.
This episode has no shortage of history and stories about the early days of the industry.
During the interview, Steve kept getting calls from telemarketers. While I edited them out, there still may be references to them in the interview….and that was the basis of the sound bite that preceded the show.

Clay prolifically tweets about his takes on design and layouts for various indie RPG products. Those twitter tweets alone will justify your entire Internet bill.
Fear not dear listeners, it isn’t all talk about grids and layout. We run headlong into a fair amount of nonsense for good measure.
It is time to get rambling.

This week Tim Shorts, of Gothridge Manor, joins me to discuss a wonderful article written by Andrew Peregrine for a Modiphius blog. The article is entitled DUNE #10 - Walking Without Rhythm and was intended to explain to GM how there is so much going on in Arrakis that there is no need for planet hopping.
After reading the six points I realized that these points are good for any campaign a GM wants run. Furthermore, I think if a campaign feels stale, it is likely that adding these elements may be all you need to inspire the players and yourself.
High on tight people….we cover a lot of ground.

This week Doug Cole from Gaming Ballistics is back and we discuss all sorts of groovy things. For starters I found out that Doug actually played in a Robot Warriors campaign (we mistakingly called it Robot Hero). We also discuss West End Games Star Wars and get into a pontificate about B running mysteries in RPGs. Doug talks about creating a dynamic setting, and handling success and failures with skills and give a short history of The Fantasy Trip. That sounds like a very packed hour. One would think it impossible to put additional quality content into a single hour. But wait, there is more! In the middle and at the end of the podcast we discuss the Hero System and GURPS. This is a rather abrupt end to our discussion because this was the first half of the discussion we had the previous week.
High on tight people….we cover a lot of ground.

Doug Cole from Gaming Ballistics talks about his product Character Collections for Fantasy Trip that is currently running on Kickstarter. This is a great resource for any Fantasy RPG…as it provides a good deal of flavor text for each NPC. To make it even better, it only cost $10 to get all the funded PDFs. Doug has been in business for a number of years and shares his experiences running Kickstarters and getting physical book printed.
The second interview is with Edoardo Cremaschi who hails from Milano, Lombardia. He relates his history with gaming and his path into designing story games. We talk about his kickstarter project Little Katy’s Tea Party. A game that exudes and tremendous amount of charm. The goal is to protect Katy, but introduces the quandary of how far should one go in protecting her? After all, growing into adulthood requires learning to navigate hardships.

Tim Shorts of Gothridge Manor joins me in a discussion about our experiences as project creators for ZineQuest 3. This is a behind-the-scenes look at what it is like going through the valley of fire and we share the details and our thoughts. For talking points, I used Tim’s post “Successfully Funded! Some Stats and Insights” from his blog post on Gothridgemanor.blogspot.com
https://gothridgemanor.blogspot.com/2021/02/successfully-funded-some-stats-and.html
Before the interview, I knew we would be talking a lot of details and that might prove to be too much for many listeners. The plan is that Tim and I would talk for an hour and the I would have a second, non-technical interview to provide lighter content to dilute it. As we talked, it became obvious that I consistently underestimate how long I can discuss any topic with people like Tim. Well, brothers and sisters…..this is two hour discussion. No apologies. 100% pure deep dive.
Dear listeners, don’t worry, this isn’t all details. We chat about products that caught our interest and our personal criteria for what we bought as we all as various other topics.

John Watts of Independence Games. He is a full-time publisher producing content for a OGL variant of the Traveller rule set known as The Cepheus Engine. The majority of John’s sales comes from selling PDFs on DriveThru and he own website. He doesn’t do Kickstarters. If you have any interest in making a living from our hobby, you will find John’s path not only interesting and his stories entertaining but it is also apparent that path is reasonable and obtainable by others.

The first interview is with freelance writer and game designer, Matt Forbeck. His work history is too long and detailed to list here but is only a google search away. We talk about his journey into full-time freelance work at an early age as well as his work and friendship with many of the “Old Guard” of TSR. We also get to hear how a crazy, impetuous leap made in his youth paid off. His experiences and advice are still applicable for us starting a freelance career today.
The second part is an off-the-cuff discussion with Morgan Grover whom I interviewed in Episode 7. Here Morgan extols his love for Shadow of the Demon Lord and I grind my ax regarding how my normal dislike of High Fantasy is fueled to hate by bad adventure design in Decent into Avernus. Morgan explains how he fixed those shortcoming in the game he runs PLUS he also explains why Shadow of the Demon Lord is the perfect system to run The Cure of Strahd.

The first interview is with freelance writer and game designer, Matt Forbeck. His history is too long and detailed to list here but is only a google search away. We talk about his journey of taking his Sword and Sorcery stories and turning them into a new RPG. We discuss what is is like licensing the use of Monte Cook’s Cypher System as well as the unforeseen disaster occurring after the Kickstarter funded. Matt is an industry veteran and there is a lot to learn.
The second part is a discussion with Ben Laurence about stat blocks. Yes, you heard me correctly. Stat Blocks.
Apparently, I have an ax to grind and Ben humors me. I intended for this to be a ten minute banter back in forth but this grew in scope and our dialogue took on a life of its own. This show is unapolgetically, RPG Ramblings and this is what you get.
It is a long episode and time is a wasting. Lets get Rambling

This episode is an emergency broadcast for those Zine Questers out there. Those of us not from the UK or the EU shake with trepidation thinking about dealing with shipping overseas. The cost of shipping is high and there doesn’t appear to be any good way to economically distribute physical product to backers. Fear not good friends, Alistair is coming to the rescue and a solution may be in sight.

In the first segment, Brad Grover of Big Nerd Coffee Roastery talks about partnering with people like you an me for our Kickstarter projects. He matches a coffee roast with your RPG product, and that becomes an add-on for your Kickstarter project. Who doesn’t love coffee? Listen for all the details. We get into a fairly deep discussion about shipping, the cost and logistics of shipping and muse about different ways to work through those costs. At the end, I kept saying goodbye only to restart the conversation.
The second segment is a discussion with Diogo, where we discuss his RPG experiences growing up in Brazil and his love for the OSR. It will come to nobody’s surprise but my own about how much the same geek media knows no international boundaries.

Welcome RPG Ramblings with Jeff Jones. This is a weekly show exploring various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
This episode I get rambley with Ben Laurance. The intent was to talk about Jorune but I sidelined it by starting two topics that I thought would lead to fairly short discussions…but both turned into fairly deep discussions
The first topic I am saving for another day because I believe this topic is fairly pertinent as we launch into Zine Quest 3 madness. We discuss the stress that comes with being creative and how we deal with that. This also applies to game mastering and we ponder why engage in activities that bring us stress.
Like any good rambling session, we end on downtime activities for Blades in the Dark.
Give the length of our discussion, there is no deep dive portion to this episode. But fear not, dear listener, I have many deep dives planned.
It is time for me to stop talking and time for us all to get rambling.

Welcome RPG Ramblings, a weekly show exploring various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people.
The show starts with Sean Richer and we discuss Terror of the Stratosfiend: a gonzo horror, sci-fi mashup that bolts seamlessly onto Dungeon Crawl Classics, but can be used in any OSR game. An absolutely beautiful set of zines produced by successful Kickstarters. We discuss how Rifts was the inspiration and devolve into discussing Savage Worlds.
For the Deep Dive, Mark Hunt describes his journey in acquiring the IP for Gangbusters, an old TSR game that was out of print for decades. We start at the beginning and go through steps it took to become owner of the IP and start publishing. This can serve as an inspiration and a starting point for those wanting to pursue an exiting IP.

Then Mark shares the various ways one can approach running Gangbusters game, or really any game set in the 20’s. We dip into game design as Mark explains how he used existing B/X mechanics in different ways to meet the needs of the game’s genre. We also discuss his WW2 game, The Front Line, as well his Western RPG, Tall Tales.
We do a deep dive with Diogo Nogueira; an artist, writer, and game designer from Brasil. We discuss the mechanics behind his Post-Apocalypse fantasy game, Solar Blades and Cosmic Spells . Welcome RPG Ramblings, a weekly show exploring various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people. For this episode, Tim Shorts and Ben Laurance are back each providing additional insight to their success at producing RPG Content.
In the first segment, Ben discusses the creation of his Zine Through Ultan’s Door; a trippy, extra-dimensional plane of existence intended for characters to serendipitously tumble into. Going back into Ben’s early gaming experiences, it becomes clear that Through Ultan’s Door was inevitable. For $5 you can pick this zine up at Drivethrurpg.com or his store front at Through Ultan’s Door dot bigcartel.com.
Tim Shorts gives us a deep dive into running a successful Kickstarter for Hunters of Death and what it takes to fulfill a 600 orders. Hunters of Death is $5 at Drivethrurpg.com.
Both Ben and Tim are prolific writers and their blogs are well worth reading. Links to those blogs, as well as contact information is found in the show notes.

Welcome to the inaugural podcast of RPG Ramblings, a show exploring various details of the TableTop RPG hobby through discussions with interesting people. This episode features two separate interviews with Tim Shorts and Ben Laurance.
Tim Shorts is a long time fixture to the OSR community. For over a decade he has written blogs, produced zines and even finds time to produce his own podcast. While the name Tim Shorts may not ring a bell, his moniker, Gothridge Manor, should, as it is the nomen for which he is best known . In this episode we discuss the beginnings and evolution into writing and producing RPG content. We also discuss the starting of the RPG Zine group on Facebook, which is a fast growing and incredibly community.
The Deep Dive portion is with Ben Laurance. Ben is not only known for his blog, Mazirian’s Garden but also for Through Ultan’s Door; a trippy OSR setting/adventure zine. We discuss the details of the production and selling of Through Ultan’s Door and cover the do’s and don’ts that Ben learned from his experiences.
It is time to get rambling.
