Takeaways
ADHD can be diagnosed in adulthood, and the journey to diagnosis can be unexpected and challenging.
Transitioning from one career to another can be difficult for individuals with ADHD, but finding a job that provides mental stimulation and allows for ADHD advocacy can be fulfilling.
Creating resources like ADHD trait flashcards can simplify information and provide support for individuals with ADHD.
Being a social influencer can be overwhelming, and it's important to set boundaries and prioritize self-care.
Representation in the ADHD community is crucial, and there is a need for more diverse voices and experiences to be heard. Rejection sensitivity dysphoria (RSD) is a common experience for individuals with ADHD, characterized by extreme emotional sensitivity and a tendency to ruminate on perceived rejection or criticism.
Coping with RSD can involve both healthy and unhealthy strategies, such as seeking support from trusted individuals, therapy, and developing healthy self-esteem.
ADHD tax refers to the costs incurred as a result of managing ADHD, including financial expenses due to impulsive spending and difficulties with managing subscriptions and financial responsibilities.
To avoid ADHD tax, individuals can take proactive steps such as educating themselves about financial matters, seeking advice from others, setting up reminders and recurring alarms, and developing healthy coping mechanisms.
It is important for individuals with ADHD to validate their own experiences and not let others' opinions or perceptions invalidate their feelings or struggles.
Self-advocacy and self-care are crucial for individuals with ADHD, and it is important to be kind to oneself and focus on personal strengths and passions.

In this episode of ADHD Babes, host Ana interviews Dr. Fiona Peters, a social care expert and author who was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult. Fiona shares her personal experience of seeking and obtaining a diagnosis, which was fraught with challenges and resistance from healthcare professionals. She discusses the impact of her diagnosis on her self-acceptance and understanding of her own strengths and challenges.
Fiona also talks about the intersectionality of being a woman of color and neurodivergent, and how it has influenced her work and the way others perceive her. She emphasizes the importance of embracing one's true identity and not conforming to societal expectations. In this conversation, Fiona Peters and ADHD Babes discuss the unique experiences of women of color with ADHD and the importance of advocating for oneself in the mental health system. They also explore the role of fear in holding us back from pursuing our goals and offer advice on confronting and overcoming fear.
Fiona shares her proudest achievement, which is her family, and emphasises the importance of self-discovery and embracing new chapters in life. Listeners are encouraged to visit Fiona's website for coaching sessions and resources.

This week resident host Shereen catches up with Occupational Therapist, podcaster and entrepreneur Jenny Okolo. As an OT, Jenny crosses paths with many patients who have been diagnosed with some form of neurodivergence. What is most interesting is the number of people who she works with who haven't had any formal diagnosis but may be on a neurodivergent scale. Delving into Jenny's experiences, she explains exactly why neurodivergent patients should be treated with empathy and shares advice on what to do if you feel you don't have the right clinician for you. For clinicians out there, she has some advice for you too. Today's episode focuses on the perception of Blackness. With elements of the ADHD diagnostic criteria crossing over with stereotypes used to describe people of colour. Things like "You're so loud" or "You're being defensive". How can we challenge those who have these perceptions including other people of colour and those closest to us.
