In 2023, I introduced an evolved version of George T Doran's goal-setting framework, SMART, called SMARTIES (Specific, Measurable, Assignable, Realistic, Time-Related, Initiative, Execution, and Spiritual). Due to the nature of the occupation law enforcement officers will never know what will happen during their shift. For example, an officer on duty can start the shift racing to domestic disturbance, to then going to traffic enforcement looking for speeders of DWI’s, to happening on a house on fire rescuing some occupants inside at the risk of their lives, etc. This job is taxing on the officers mentally and physically, this has been well documented in research. One study found that police had significantly lower life expectancy (Violanti et al., 2013). How does one deal with the all the associated hardship? To examine this today’s guest and longtime friend Trent will discuss how spirituality is needed in law enforcement.
