Janae Sharp sat down with Rhonda Collins, DNP, RN, FAAN, the Chief Nursing Officer of Vocera, to talk about nurses and mental health. Vocera was the winner of the 2020 Sharp Index award for Best Health Tech Company to Reduce Physician Burnout and was recognized its excellence in improving hands-free communication for healthcare workers.

Dr. Collins works with nursing leadership groups globally to increase their understanding of the state of nursing, and how technology should improve the lives of the caregiving team.

"At every CNO roundtable I attend, nurse leaders express deep concern about nurses’ cognitive overload, the fatigue it causes, and how to address it."

The stress of work and life and the unknown are driving a nursing crisis.

Heather Staples Lavoie and I sat down to discuss healthcare information technology and how it can become an asset for physicians. As a leader in healthcare IT, she knows the importance of physicians. She also understands complex processes and freeing physicians to do what they do best.   “To realize the potential of health IT where we are predictive, person-centric, portable and equitable, interoperability must be a central tenant to both health care policy and business practice.”

I sat down with Ayman Mukerji Househam MS, MSW to discuss mindfulness and physician mental health. If you have a terrible work environment, the environment needs to improve.  Ayman is the founder of Jivika which teaches mindfulness through 30-second micro-habits. Jivika is a mobile app and live sessions teaching micro-habits. Frontline burnout is undeniably an intensifying issue and she covers what can be effective in reducing stress through meditation. Those burnt out are reluctant to meditate, why is that? Jivika teaches mindfulness through 30-second micro-habits.

Justin Bullock, MD wrote his story "Suicide - Rewriting My Story" about mental health and a suicide attempt while he was in the hospital. He is a runner, a physician, and an advocate for bipolar disorder and mental health for physicians. Justin won the Sharp Index advocacy award for 2020 and has been sharing his story. The reminder is that, just because I talk about something, does not mean it is easy for me to talk about. I sat down with Justin to discuss advocacy and mental health. Most hospital systems or medical schools, while they teach about mental illness and mental health, would prefer not to have any doctors who are sick. They would prefer not to see those problems in real life. Dr. Bullock has shared ways to improve trauma-informed evaluation and licensure of Physicians. Trauma-Informed Transformation of Evaluation and Licensure for Physicians With Mental Illness | Journal of Hospital Medicine Off-camera we were able to discuss racism, bipolar disorder stereotypes, and the importance of honesty. I asked him about the impact of substance abuse on mental health, and how to create and hold better boundaries with ourselves, physicians, and loved ones. #physicians #physicianburnout #Mentalhealth #BipolarDisorder To nominate a leader or learn more about the Sharp Index Awards: sharpindex.org
