The Flexing Physio: Recent Episodes

Daniel

Hey everyone, a HUGE welcome to our podcast that we are kicking off in 2022. #newyearnewme am I right?? This podcast is aimed to help physio students at any stage of their uni degree, new grad physios who are about to start their working life and physios who have already worked for a year or two! Some of the hosts include Dan Chang, a Taiwanese/Kiwi food lover, Bri Short, a horse lover and yarn spinner and finally, Wazza Ansell, the "not so old" practise owner of Pro-active Physiotherapy, here in Tamworth.

We hope you enjoy the episodes :)

What a jam packed episode this was ladeez and gentlenuts. Recorded today and released today!! Today we meet the fellow social media legend, John Contreras (who is not asian lol), and we learn about his career pathway. He has been in the physio work force for 22 years now, so he def spat some awesome facts and clinical gems for us younger physios and new grads. I took a lot away from my conversation with John. He is a calm and cool cucumber.

Ladeeeez and gentlenuts, today we welcome an ol friend from uni. Her name is Kimmy Brunette, but she's a blonde lol...

We've known each other and been good friends since first year uni at university of Newcastle, Australia. He's a physiotherapist based in Sydney and he is known for challenging beliefs and helping other clinicians become better. I respect what Beau does because it's not easy to go against the grain, especially when looking at things like lifting technique, dynamic knee valgus, lumbar flexion and many more.

One of the most wholesome episodes to date! My parents are visiting me in Melbourne all the way from New Zealand (where they live) and it's been a pleasure hosting them. This episode features my dad who was an orthopaedic surgeon in Taiwan 25 years ago, until he gave up his job to be with his family in NZ. My dad is my hero, and today we get to meet him and hear his story. We also answer all your questions.

We yarned about:

  • his background

  • does he miss seeing me everyday?

  • How was I as a child? Naughty? Got spank?

  • What supplements did he give me?

  • How it feels having a son with an absolute dump truck?

  • What area of orthopaedics he specialised in?

  • Most challenging surgery he's ever performed?

  • Biggest change from his first to last year of practice?

  • Did he take any advice from physiotherapists back in the day?

I hope you enjoy this very wholesome and meaningful episode!!!

yay for another solo session! I low key love doing these, because it's an opportunity to connect with my awesome listeners and to answer any of your questions. I'm an open book, so always one DM away if you ever have a question life or physio related. In this episode we have a brand new segment called 'uncle dan meets a fan' and we meet two legends, Queen Lizzie Bilton (Sydney ICU physio) and Jacked Kingsley Shbay (University of Queensland New Grad).

The questions that I answer are:

  • What is one piece of advice I would give my new grad self?

  • What's 3 things about myself that aren't physio related.

  • Do I miss Osmo?

  • Has my perception of pain management changed in the last year?

  • My thoughts on the King pulling out of the AO 2023?

  • Do I like Singapore food or Malaysia food?

  • Any tips for a physio about to move interstate and start fresh with case loads and work?

  • Why aren't clinical placements paid a small stipend salary?

  • What I do when I have no idea what to do with a patient.

I hope you enjoy the poddy xx

When I saw that someone had an ankle sprain, I would think to myself "ah this is gonna be an easy one".

Happy New Year and hope you had a safe and very merry Christmas.

This week, we have the pleasure to chat with Nadeena, the Head2toe physio about what you can do if your patient just isn't responding to your treatment. As a new grad, I had this unhelpful expectation that all my patients would improve with my 'magical' physio input. The reality of the matter is that not EVERYONE will get better. The body heals itself, and it's our job to educate and work with our patient and guide them onto the right path to facilitate the best environment for healing. In this episode we explore options of what physios can do if their patient just isn't improving, from referring to specialist physios, to checking all the red flags and checking within yourself to see if you're missing something.

We hope you enjoy.

2.) What are some subjective 'must ask' questions when a runner comes in to see you?

In this episode, wazza and I delve into how we navigate through a yellow flaggy type consult and how we can best use our skills to help them. Remember, they are also humans and they are able to change and sometimes you are the difference between them forever going down the path of self-wallowing pity and them taking ownership and actually doing something about it.
