A POWERFUL podcast on Building Leadership Presence with Executive Leadership Coach, Christina Zini.
In my role as an executive leadership coach, a recurring subject is the development of leadership and executive presence. Executive Presence (EP) is undeniably crucial for leaders in the boardroom to make an immediate impact and project authority. Yet, a broader concept is Leadership Presence (LP), which can be described as the ability to exert a lasting influence. Leaders require LP to motivate others towards establishing and realizing shared objectives. But what makes an individual captivating? Which combination of skills and qualities signals that a person is fit for leadership?

Is Executive Presence still relevant in today’s modern organization, and if so, what does it look like? Has this image formula changed at all in the age of inclusion?

In studies conducted by economist and researcher, Sylvia Ann Hewlett, found that the core principles of EP remained remarkably the same of the past 10 years despite the pandemic, social and political changes in the US and around the world and the rise of remote or Zoom work. The core pillars of EP consist of:

1. How you act (gravitas)
2. How you speak (communication)
3. How you look (appearance

These pillars are not equally important and they are highly interactive.

We have seen a shift to a more inclusive leadership presence. Globalization has driven a focus on the diverse workforce and the benefits of tapping into underrepresented talent pools. Generational change is causing us to reexamine biases, cultural and neuro diversity and what represents authenticity in a new way.
The good news is that experts agree that executive presence is a ‘skill’ and not a ‘trait’. Executive presence, like leadership, is a skill that can be learned and has to be cultivated to become second nature.

My guest today is Christini Zini, a world renowned executive leadership coach, and she has been a guest on the podcast before. Christina is a leadership coach with over 25 years of global experience in coaching and developing people and driving transformational change. She built a successful career as a management consultant and professional development leader with PwC and IBM.

Her passion for helping people- particularly women- advance their careers and elevate their leadership is what prompted her to launch her own leadership coaching firm over a decade ago.

Christina has conducted thorough research to grasp the nuances of Leadership Presence, particularly for women and marginalized groups in the workplace. In this podcast, we delve into the three pillars of Leadership Presence and their essential elements, and how inclusive leadership has evolved. We offer actionable advice on how to develop your Leadership Presence for personal and professional growth.

We are undergoing the largest demographic shift in the workforce that the world has ever experienced. ~10,000 Baby Boomers are retiring every day, and Millennials now make up over 50% of the US workforce and will reach 75% of the global workforce by 2025. Approximately 35% of all leadership positions are held by Millennials or between 5.2M-11.2M leaders. Many of these leaders take on these roles with only 3-5 years of experience. It's no wonder that a majority of these new leaders report that they don’t feel ready and have not received the proper training to take on their current role.

Many studies, and my own personal experience as a leadership coach, indicate that the next generations are reluctant to take on leadership roles for a variety of reasons (e.g. belief in peer-to-peer collaboration to achieve goals, the organization’s mission and purpose, and a desire to maintain work-life balance.

With so many challenges facing the world today, it is crucial that we find a way to encourage and inspire the next generation to take on leadership roles and we provide the support and training necessary for them to feel capable and enthusiastic about being a leader.

My guest today is Dr. Pooja Singh, an amazing young leader. Pooja is a recent Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) graduate from the University of Southern California. Inspired by her father's career as a pharmacist, Pooja decided at a young age to pursue a career in pharmacy. She is driven by a growing passion for the field and a dedication to giving back to the profession.

During her academic tenure, Pooja distinguished herself as a leader, consistently demonstrating a commitment to service and professional development. Pooja is passionate about all-things pharmacy, leadership, and service. Pooja hopes to utilize her various leadership experiences to continue to mentor student pharmacists, encourage them to get involved and serve our profession, and become their best personal and professional selves.

A fascinating discussion with Christina Zini, a highly successful Women's Leadership Coach & Light Liberator. Christina and I discuss the importance of mindsets and how these mindsets directly impact a leader's effectiveness and performance.

Over $400 billion is spent by organizations annually on leadership development efforts; however, human capital research reveals that 75% of these organizations consider their leadership development programs are ineffective. Experts suggest that the main reason lies in the tendency of most leadership development effort to neglect the cognitive aspects of how leaders perceive, think and behave, essentially their mindsets.

We offer tips and recommendations on the mindsets that work and how to develop yours as a leader.

Here is how you can connect with Christina and John:

Intelligent Leadership is a transformational, results-driven leadership growth philosophy and process that ignites, cultivates and polishes an individual's heart, mind, and soul in support of creating a truly exceptional leadership and culture capability in an organization.

John Burt is joined by John Mattone, the world's leading executive coach, author, speaker and founder of four exceptional leadership development companies. We discuss Intelligent Leadership and the 12 tenets of this extraordinary philosophy.

Intelligent Leadership Tenet #10 - Successful leaders must go forward everyday with a mindset of "duty" vs privilege. The world has plenty of people with an over-inflated sense of their skills and capabilities. We risk losing sight of something crucial to great leadership, a sense of interconnectedness, and duty to something beyond ourselves.

In this episode, JB and John Mattone discuss the importance of a Duty Mindset, and how the great leaders create a shared vision and strategy, and communicate it so powerfully, others are inspired to join them on the journey. These leaders execute with and through others and consistently develop the leadership potential in the next generation of leaders.

Intelligent Leadership Tenet #11 and #12 - Leadership, Talent and Culture are the true leading indicators of sustained operating success in any organization. The individual and collective mindsets of "can-do", "will-do" and "must-do" determine both the individual and collective sustained success. Studies show that individuals are 10 times more likely to leave their job due to a toxic culture than for compensation. Leaders are primarily accountable for creating the culture of an organization - sometimes unknowingly.

What you "think" influences how you feel and how you behave as an individual and as a leader. Sames is true for organizations. Employees and leaders that think they have the capabilities (the can-do) have the potential for extraordinary performance. If employees and leaders are committed (the will-do) they execute to accomplish the task. However, if the employees and leaders share a common, interconnectedness (the must-do), they can and will perform at their very best.

In this final episode, JB and John Mattone explore the roles that leadership, talent and culture play is driving an organization to success, and creating more passionate and committed employees and leaders. They also dive into the 5C's of culture and how important they are to a building and sustaining a healthy and vibrant culture of an organization.

Intelligent Leadership Tenets #8 and #9 - Successful leaders and future leaders must demonstrate the courage to execute their plans with passion, pride and precision. Leaders must be focused and "locked-in" and vigilant, enabling nimble course correction when necessary. It's game-time! Time to take action. Action requires courage. Leader must act, sometimes on limited or unclear information. This requires passion, pride and precision from the leader to be avoid disaster.

In a world of distractions, leaders must be able to tune out the noise and stay locked-in and focused. The must be vigilant and present, sensing changes that will require course correction and change.

JB and John Mattone discuss these important elements of leadership and how they impact a leader's performance and likelihood of success.

The reality for all leaders is they must make an impact and drive results. Talk is one thing, but leaders need a strategy and plan to achieve goals. This strategy must be compelling to inspire others to join them and commit their time and energy.

Intelligent Leadership Tenets #5 & #6 - Successful leaders and future leaders must make the conscious decision to be vulnerable, and they must become acutely self-aware of their gifts and gaps. The most difficult decision for any leader, yet potentially the most rewarding, is that to be vulnerable. Admitting that you don't have all the answers and asking for help and feedback is so powerful. Being vulnerable is not weakness. In fact, it requires tremendous courage as a leader.

Once a leader opens themselves up for feedback, they can become acutely aware of their gifts, strengths, and gaps. This self-awareness is the cornerstone to growth and change. It is important leaders fully understand their super-powers and avoid the negativity gap. Lean in on your gifts and strengths and focus your attention on those gaps which are block your ability to reach you full potential.

JB and John Mattone explore the vulnerability and self-awareness principles of Intelligent Leadership.
