This Culture Couch Live discusses the challenges that leaders and middle managers experience around coaching their team, when it's so easy to take over and do the work on their own. In the sporting world, a coach's role is clearly defined and they are not able to get onto the field and make a pass for a player, but in the corporate world, this isn't the case, which leads leaders/managers often taking over for their team instead of taking the time to coach/lead them.

If you want to change and find an purpose as to why you're changing, “it simply has to be about performance”. Don't get that caught up in the generational differences. The generational differences do not matter.

The question you have to ask yourself is, "do you want to keep getting better for yourself and for the betterment of the team?" Simply, the answer has to be yes.

Welcome to Culture Couch Live for the first time in 2023.

In this episode we discuss our partnership with Insights Discovery in Australia and New Zealand.

Insights Discovery has done some really good research around collaboration. One question they chose to answer “what has the impact of the pandemic been on collaboration?”

The stats say that time spent collaborating has dropped from 43% before the pandemic, down to 27% after the pandemic. We're all about driving high performing teams and to be high performing, we know that there has to be a level of collaboration because that's the way you become high performing. So if collaboration has dropped from 43 to 27%, what impact does that have on culture? And if we're going to have a hybrid workplace, which we know we will have some level, ongoing, how do we bring that together to drive the collaboration so that we still get the performance at the end of the day?

Let's be really frank on what collaboration is. Effectively, it's teamwork.

You've got to go back and look why aren't people coming into the office?

If you are the boss, you have to lead by example. You cannot expect others to be in, if you are not.

Don't tell the people to come in and stay at home. Make sure that if you are a senior leader in the company, an executive, you are doing as you ask others to do.

It's not like we haven't had hybrid workers in the past. But that freedom has always been to the benefit of the company. It's never been what the particular individual wants to do.

Is the hybrid workplace the best thing for the company or is it the best thing for the individual?

Some of it comes down to whether being in, is a means of control or not for leaders?

For individuals, empowerment is more important now than ever.

Leaders really have to step up now and really role model what that looks like because without it, you're going to have massive turnover.

The question we ask in our programs often is “do you see yourself as a team?”

We believe that's probably one of the biggest challenges we see in terms of developing culture. In a lot of instances the answer is no. When it should be yes. Even more so now, without interaction the means to create team environment is harder. That hasn't been a thing that's changed since the pandemic, but the pandemic has exacerbated it.

If the group is not coming together every quarter and refocusing on themselves as a team, then there's a lot less chance that they’re going to be unified in achieving what they want to achieve.
