Sometimes stuff gets stuck in my head and I gotta get it out in order to be able to move on with my day, and this is one of those times.
A tweet (are we still calling them tweets?) contextualizing Aljamain Sterling’s recent victories led to a back-and-forth thread about how you win being tremendously important in MMA, prompting me to jump on here and share some thoughts.
In this episode, I run through the thread that turned this into my daily fixation, explain why I pushed back on the initial “grading” of Sterling’s current five-fight winning streak, and wonder why we never add context to results to lift athletes up or mete out these qualifiers consistently?
As I said in the thread and on the show: the door is always open — to anyone — to come on and have a larger, deeper conversation about this or anything else y’all wanna talk about when it comes to this sport, these athletes, and how we cover them.

In the aftermath of UFC 288, it feels like more time has been committed to Power Slap metrics and Sean O’Malley’s jacket than the efforts turned in by athletes beyond the biggest fights.
Generally speaking, this feels like the norm these days.
As someone that often hears lamentations about the UFC not doing enough to promote athletes and showcase a wider array of fighters — despite being the only large-scale website that chronicles every fight, profiles nearly every athlete on every card — I want to understand how all these peripheral stories that will fade into the ether are the stories that everyone wants to consume and so many websites are quick to produce.

We’re back, baby!
After taking a two-event break to head to Newfoundland with my family, and then coming home to deal with COVID (awful) and a car accident on Monday (the worst… everyone is okay though), it’s nice to be back in the business of making fight predictions and sharing them with you. What can I say?
I’ve read your comments. I’ve seen the messages on Twitter and YouTube and this newsletter. I’ve listened to Harry repeatedly telling me that doing anything other than writing is the way of the future and d’you know what? UFC 278 hits the Octagon on Saturday night at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah, headlined by a welterweight championship fight between reigning titleholder Kamaru Usman and British challenger Leon “Rocky” Edwards.

Series like The Ultimate Fighter and Dana White’s Contender Series are often maligned for being stale or siphoning cheap, young talent into the Octagon at the expense of well-paid veterans.
While there is some validity to those criticisms, these programs also offer opportunities for fans and media that often lament not knowing anything about a large percentage of the competitors that make UFC the roster to get to know these athletes before they even set foot inside the Octagon. As teased on the latest episode of The Next Day Takeaways, the subject of today’s Keyboard Kimura Podcast (presented by ONE BONE) is changing the way I speak about the men and women that step into the Octagon to compete.
Specifically, I want to shift to an even more nuanced and detailed way of discussing these competitors, one that focuses on really breaking down key elements and indicators about where they fit in their respective divisions, how to most accurately describe them in terms of being prospects, contenders, and those various labels we affix to athletes, and present a more comprehensive assessment of why I have a certain opinion about a competitor by breaking everyone down using the same criteria and factors.
I want to do this for myself because I think there are ways for me to do an even better job of conveying information to readers and listeners and consumers about these athletes that will (hopefully) help them get a more complete or fuller picture of who these competitors are, where they’re at in the careers, and where they might be able to go in the future that helps build greater through lines and a more accurate overall picture about these divisions and the vast number of athletes that populate them.
As always, I want to hear your thoughts on this idea and what I’m going to start trying to do — and I want you to hold me to in the times when I slip, because there will be times when I slip — because this is a “me thing” that would be cool to turn into a “we thing” down the line if it all makes sense to you and is something you want to jump in with or even just enjoy listening to.

Following his win over Tim Means on Saturday night, there were calls for Kevin Holland to garner an opportunity against a Top 15 opponent, with the welterweight calling out Sean Brady in his post-fight interview with Daniel Cormier.
Seeing people advocate for Holland to face a ranked opponent in the 170-pound weight class based on wins over Means and Alex Oliveira, coupled with his previously being ranked at middleweight didn’t make a great deal of sense to me, given that he never beat a ranked opponent during his stay at 185-pounds, has arguably lost to the four best opponents he’s faced in the UFC, and the same kind of push from fans and media never came for someone like Daniel Rodriguez, who similarly submitted Means a couple years back (on short notice, at that) and has since gone 5-1 against good competition.
And so today’s episode of the Keyboard Kimura Podcast is dedicated to trying to figure out what earns fighters like Holland that fast-pass to fighting Top 15 opponents from fans and media and why it’s not given to others like Rodriguez.

It was a thoroughly entertaining night (clap-clap-clap) deep in the heart of Texas…
Now that we’re a couple weeks into this new dynamic on The Takeaways (read: Harry is here and brilliant), I think we’re figuring out how to approach these shows and what we want to cover, and I love that it’s different than most typical post-fight conversations.
I’ll write about those and talk about those and plenty of other people will too — what fights to make, where everyone fits in their respective divisions, what these results mean, etc. — but the more interesting thing to cover on these shows are the over-arching elements of the events, the greater points of discussion that usually don’t get as much airspace, and the technical, analytical side of these performances.
That’s what has bonded Harry and I over these last several months and makes him stand out to me as one of the sharpest emerging minds in this space, so each week, we’ll be here, talking about those types of things.
For this weekend’s event in Austin, that means kicking off the show by discussing some of the late-ish stoppages and the ending of the fight between Joaquin Buckley and Albert Duraev, the skills and intangibles on display throughout the main card slate, key points of interest going forward with Buckley, Kevin Holland, and Adrian Yanez, and how we might actually be suffering from an over-abundance of exciting performances and top-flight action right now as fans and observers of this sport.

Today’s podcast turned into a bit of a therapy session, but I hope you’ll understand why I felt necessary for me and that everything comes from a good place. I know there are parts where I sound egotistical and elitist, and there will be arguments I make that you disagree with, but I care about this sport and its athletes so deeply, and want the way they’re covered to be better, and when it’s not, things like this bubble up inside of me.
And today I let it out.

I was pumped to see Jiri Prochazka have his amazing moment at home in Brno — and I love the picture from his tweet above — and it triggered my frustration over the dismissive comments and mindset that followed the announcement of Arman Tsarukyan and Mateusz Gamrot headlining next weekend’s show, and we were off to the races.
This sport and its people are my passion, my favourite hobby, and what I dedicate large portions of my day-to-day life towards chronicling, and not only do I want to do it as best as I possibly can, but I want to be surrounded by others that feel the same way.
That’s what this podcast is all about.

Saturday night, Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore, Singapore played host to UFC 275, which delivered a host of entertaining fights that left plenty to talk about here on the latest edition of The Next Day Takeaways.

Valentina Shevchenko has an opportunity to further etch her name in the UFC history books and join an exclusive group on Saturday night.
With a victory over Taila Santos at UFC 275, the flyweight champion would pass Ronda Rousey for the most consecutive successful title defences by a female fighter in UFC history, with seven, which would also bring her into a tie for fifth all-time with long-time featherweight ruler Jose Aldo, with only Demetrious Johnson, Anderson Silva, Georges St-Pierre, and Jon Jones ever having earned more.
Accomplishing anything that puts you in such illustrious company should establish your standing as an all-time great competitor, but as Shevchenko readies to face Santos this weekend in Singapore, it feels like her reign is defined by questions about the skills and talents of her competition, rather than the unmatched abilities and focus “Bullet” brings to each and every fight.

Last week, the UFC announced Arman Tsarukyan and Mateusz Gamrot would headline the June 25 fight card at the UFC APEX, prompting questions about the quality of the bout from a “name value” perspective.
After taking a couple days to step away from the thread and cool my Twitter fingers, I wanted to sit down and share my thoughts on the subject, both in terms of the initial tweet that set things off and the responses that followed.

Tony Ferguson returns on Saturday, and spent his media session today going in on the UFC for what he views as mistreatment and missed opportunities over the years, prompting others to pile on, questioning how someone could win 12 consecutive fights in the lightweight division and never end up fighting for the undisputed title.
How it happens isn’t actually all that difficult to sort out because we can all reconstruct the timeline of events that led to a number of missed opportunities and different championship fights coming together.
Ferguson also isn’t the only guy to put together a lengthy winning streak and not get a chance to fight for gold in their respective division, but there often isn’t the same kind of vitriol for those other fighters.
Over the course of this 30-minute podcast, I lay out all the information so you can understand the entire Tony Ferguson Timeline and why only arguing in support of “El Cucuy” (or against the UFC) is disingenuous and wilfully leaving out important, established information.

I love having the ability to fire up the podcast machine whenever something crosses my timeline that gets me thinking or touches on something I’ve talked about before, and this is one of those times.
Scrolling through Twitter, I saw the MMA Junkie story embedded below where on the latest episode of “DC & RC,” Daniel Cormier suggested that Vicente Luque would be a great opponent for Sean Brady, the unbeaten hopeful pictured above on the right, and thought, “I just talked about a matchup for Sean Brady and disagree with his matchmaking approach.”
So I taped a quick 23 minute podcast about it.
Matchmaking is an inexact science with no absolute right answers. I have my way of thinking about things, others have their own, and I hope I explained why I’d much rather see Brady face Belal Muhammad as I suggested on Sunday’s episode of The Next Day Takeaways more than I would like to see him face Luque as DC suggests.

What’s more important: personality or performance?
The wake of Saturday’s event in London feels like a great opportunity to discuss the question as despite massive efforts in crucial, competitive matchups by Arnold Allen and Tom Aspinall (and others), Paddy Pimblett is the guy garnering the lion’s share of the attention.
On one hand, I get it: he’s magnetic, he’s charming, he has that indescribable something that just pulls you in every time you see him.
On the other hand, this felt like when the WWF used to have a debuting wrestler smash some jobber on Saturday Superstars and made a big deal about their arrival. Saturday’s fight with Kazula Vargas was a layup for Pimblett, and he still bobbled the ball a little initially.
Rather than write a couple thousand words on the subject, I thought a quick 25-minute pod was an easier way to express things, and hopefully a way for more of you to engage with the subject and give it a think.
I don’t know what the right answer is for everyone.
I know for me, performance trumps all, and while I too was impressed to see the star power of Pimblett on full display this past weekend, I was far more moved by the efforts of Allen, Aspinall, and several others, and feel like those performances are the ones I want to talk about more going forward.

Guess who’s taping Sunday podcasts looking back on the action from inside the Octagon now?
I’ve been kicking around this idea for a while and now that Substack has made putting something like this together extremely easy and convenient, I don’t have any more excuses for not doing it, so here you go.
The Next Day Takeaways will be exactly what the name suggests: thoughts, reflections, and things to think about going forward after sleeping on what transpired inside the Octagon the night before.
As someone who writes live and in the moment, but continues to think about these events and the impact the results will have for at least 24 hours after the dust has settled, there are always things that come to me after I’ve hit publish on What We Learned or About Last Night that I want to share. But instead of putting together another written piece covering everything, I thought I’d go the podcast route instead.
