What’s in this episode?
Last month, a text called the “Global Majority Wikimedia Technology Priorities" was published on Meta. This is a manifesto, signed by a growing number of Wikimedia organizations and individuals, which addresses decision making about technology in the Wikimedia Movement - particularly when it comes to creating technology that is designed for users of the global majority and in emerging communities. We talk to two of the initiators of the research and the text, and they relate their work to movement strategy and knowledge as a service.

In this episode we talk about the Wikimedia Movement Charter - the “artifact” that spells out who we are, what values we have, and what roles and responsibilities the various Movement bodies have. The close-to final draft of the charter is now online for comments and review. We talk with two members of the Movement Charter Drafting committee, and a community member involved in the original strategy formation. We touch upon the history of the charter, the motivation and work that went into it. We learn what if affirms and what it adds. We also find out why it ended up being a short document!

Ciell has a professional background in Social Work and has been an admin on the Dutch Wikipedia since 2006. She is also very active within the international community. She is an admin on Wikimedia Commons and a member of the international Wiki Loves Monuments team. And most importantly for the purpose of today’s podcast: she is part of the MCDC.
Daria Cybulska is the Director of Programmes at Wikimedia UK, having joined the chapter in 2012. She is a Churchill Fellow, investigating Central Asia’s online civil society, and an AKO Storytelling Institute Fellow working on misinformation and information literacy skills.
Alek Tarkowski is a digital activist who joined the Wikimedia Movement back in 2017 during the strategy process. He is the co-founder and Strategy Director at the Open Future think tank and sits on the Board of Directors of Creative Commons. He is also the chair of the Oversight Board of Centrum Cyfrowe, a Polish digital think-and-do tank.

They discuss their efforts to improve the representation of marginalized groups and reduce harassment on Wikipedia, reinforcing the importance of the movement strategy's focus on safety and inclusion. The guests talked about their fight against vandalism and provided a critical perspective on the neutral point of view policy. The episode sheds light on the challenges and the progress that we face as a Movement as we try to create a Wikipedia that is safer and that better represents trans and non-binary people and content.

In this episode we talk about new projects to connect the people of our movement for mutual aid. Our movement is constantly growing and diversifying, all across the globe. New people are joining and new communities are forming every day. We are looking back at years of complaints about how Wikimedia technology is outdated and exclusive. Non-encyclopedic forms of knowledge are still impossible or hard to insert into our existing formats. The last big innovation from our movement is Wikidata, which is now almost ten years old. Movement Strategy calls on us to innovate our technical and social systems so that new and marginalized communities can join and share their knowledge. We talk about the UNLOCK accelerator program, how it is being implemented in collaboration with WMS and WMDE this year, and explore how the movement can become more of an innovation ecosystem.

Wiki Movimento Brasil surveyed the Portuguese speaking communities about some of the big juicy concepts in the MS20230 recommendations - equity in decision making, leadership development and diversity. By doing that, they reached many community members not previously engaged. In this pod they talk about the insights, opportunities and challenges that emerged.
