Have you ever negotiated the terms of a promotion? More likely than not, women will accept the terms of a promotion without negotiating for the benefits that come with the package.

An HBR study shows that even when women negotiate, they are 10-15% less likely to get what they want. This gap widens even more at the leadership levels, as there are more belief patterns driven out of fear that we might miss out on the opportunity if we try to push back and negotiate.

While there are multiple factors that are out of our control as black corporate career women, we can certainly change the narrative and use our voices and the value of our work to get compensated for what we deserve.

Join me as I empower you with the mindset to negotiate a promotion package, and other things you need to know like

  • whether you should negotiate or accept the terms of a promotion
  • why you have won even if you don't get what you are negotiating for
  • how to nail your negotiation
  • how to approach negotiation strategically so you can make this an easier decision for the decision-makers at work

Do you see your culture as a liability or an asset when it comes to climbing the corporate ladder?

It takes courage to embrace your cultural identity, especially in workplaces where you can't see people in leadership who look like you.

I only recently started to say my full name out loud in meetings for fear of the immediate biases it would trigger...

But when I stepped into my true self and embraced that this was part of who I was bringing to the table, I felt so liberated, and it reflected in my confidence and the perception others had of me.

And even though I had to deal with the biases of being black, wearing my God-given hair or speaking English in my African accent, I found people who wanted to support black women like me at work.

In this episode you will learn about:

  • The consequences of not being authentic at work
  • The importance of owning your cultural identity and educating others about
  • The role your cultural identity plays in the personal brand and allies you can create
  • What to do when someone labels you as the token diversity hire

When you’re an introvert navigating the corporate world, it can be easy to feel as though your introversion is a weakness.

People constantly say that to be seen as a leader, you need to start speaking up more. You need to take charge. But when you’re an introvert, these things simply don’t come easily to you…and it can quickly begin to feel like leadership is entirely out of reach.

Luckily, this isn’t true.

I’m a leadership coach. My job is to teach people how to be great leaders…and guess what? I’m a proud member of the introvert club.

Introversion is not a weakness…in fact, it comes with many strengths that lend themselves well to leadership, if you let yourself lean into them. And I’m here today to tell you how.

When we grow up, we have a bad habit of setting aside ALL childish things…even the things that would serve us in our careers.

As children, we set goals without concern for reason, limitation, or achievability. When we set goals, we set them without worrying about the “odds” of us being able to complete them.

As adults, we tend to lose that ability to dream without limits…and we need to find a way to change that.

It’s time to give yourself permission to set radical goals for yourself, because that is the only way you will reach incredible heights in your career.

If you missed out on joining the Elevate Collective, good news–even though our doors are now closed until July, I’m giving you an inside look at one of our coaching calls in this episode of elevateHER!

A couple weeks ago, in Episode 72 of elevateHER, I talked about setting good goals for the year. This week, I’ve invited a guest on the podcast to talk a little more about how to set goals with intention as you’re going through a transitionary period.

Please welcome Audrey Kusambiza Bolo, who works with clients navigating change and transition, needing to make big, bold decisions in the pursuit of balance, clarity, passion, or purpose. Her mission is to support people to make decisions aligned with their truth, and I cannot wait for you all to hear what she has to say.

Intention is everything if you want to set goals you’ll actually achieve. Excitement is good, but it fades over time…and you need something more permanent to fuel yourself through your next transition!

When you sit through eight meetings in one day and realize…

  1. Only one meeting included any other women besides yourself, and
  2. That only one of THOSE women spoke up during that meeting…

You know that something needs to change.

I created The Elevate Collective because of one thing:

We need more black women in leadership, period.

And while many companies are paying lip service to the issue, I have yet to see real action taken to lead us into real change…

So I decided to take action myself.

In this episode of elevateHER, I want to take you behind the scenes of my group coaching program, The Elevate Collective, created specifically for ambitious career women who want to create their leadership identity and get seen, paid, and promoted as the boss leader they truly deserve to be.

When I first found out how much my husband was paying for monthly coaching, I couldn’t believe it.

More than that, I never thought it was something I should ever consider–I thought of coaching as something that only directors had any business investing in.

I could not have been more wrong.

Now that I know what it’s like to do this work surrounded by other like-minded women, I will NEVER go back to doing it alone. And while a group program isn’t right for everyone at every stage in their development, it’s very possible that it’s a better fit for you than you think. If you…

  • Have been operating at the status quo for far too long
  • Are aware that you need accountability + support in order to stay committed to your goals and build momentum
  • Are ready to massively uplevel your career

…a group program may be exactly what you need. Let’s go over all the factors that will let you know whether a group program is the right fit for you.

Welcome to 2023, ladies!

Today, I want to talk about goals: what makes a great goal, what makes a poor goal, how you can keep yourself invested in your goals for the year, and more.

If you’re making goals from a place of EXCITEMENT, not COMMITMENT, it’s very likely that in just a handful of weeks, you’ll be back to business as usual. Therefore, it’s important to assess your goals to see…

  • If your goal is too small
  • If your goal is fueled by start-of-the-year excitement, not commitment
  • If you named off goals without a game plan for how to achieve them

If you’re not sure your goals fit the criteria, good news—it’s not too late to change them. Let’s talk about how to set goals you can truly commit to.

Today we are talking all about goals and intention setting ahead of 2023.

This is the best time to think about what you want to achieve and how you are going to make it happen! We're going to focus on breakthrough successes, not overnight successes. Because overnight success doesn't really exist. Overnight success can take 5-10 years... it may look like an overnight success but the hard work behind it is sometimes hard to see.

Two things that are very important to making these breakthrough successes happen, taking control over your career's path and figuring out what you REALLY want out of your career. I know that may not sound simple but listen now to learn more about how this is something doable for you as well.

Description:

Here we are, ladies: the holiday season. A time for spending quality time with your families, making memories with your kids, and enjoying your time away from work…

Or not.

If you’re anything like me, you’re probably familiar with the struggle of setting boundaries between work time and family time–especially around the holidays. At the end of the year, there’s a sense of urgency that kicks in at work, and it can be easy to fall into the trap of being glued to your laptop throughout the holidays rather than being present with your family.

Luckily, I know how to help. I’m here today to share my ten favorite tips for setting boundaries at work during this busy season of life.

Oftentimes, we are our own biggest limiters.

There are many ways that we can get in our own way while chasing growth in our careers, and oftentimes, we don’t even realize we’re doing it. It is incredibly difficult to spot the ways we’re limiting ourselves without a little outside perspective, so in this week’s episode, I’m going to give you seven things to watch out for, including…

  • Being too humble (yes, it’s possible!)
  • Indulging in victim mindset
  • Compromising on our boundaries
  • And more!

It’s time we got out of our own way. 2023 can be your year to finally achieve your career goals…but only if you cut these seven things out of your work life.

When you don’t ask the question, the answer will always be no.

Only you know what you want in your career. And if you keep silent, thinking your boss will somehow read your mind and give you exactly what you’re hoping for, then you’ve already assured that the answer will be no.

You can’t get what you want unless you ask for it. And as scary as asking can be, it’s necessary for us to put what we want out there where our bosses can hear it if we ever want to receive it. Let me tell you how to start asking for what you want, and how to do it right!

Let me tell you a secret:

When you have skin in the game, you show up differently.

When your company sends you to the trainings that they provide, you can come back and return to the same old day-to-day routine without anything lost. But when you invest in your OWN growth, you have something to lose…and more to gain.

This week, I’ll be discussing…

  • The myths surrounding investing in your own career growth
  • Why it’s always worth investing in yourself
  • My own experience investing in coaching
  • And more!

Investing in yourself isn’t a waste or an unnecessary expenditure; it’s the best way to transform the way you show up at work, show up as a leader, and show up as you move forward in your career.

When I was first introduced to the concept of “leadership coaching,” I thought it was all about learning to be a better speaker. I thought it was about becoming a convincing and eloquent CEO, so I never thought I needed it. I didn’t realize I could invest my own resources into developing some of the weaker areas in myself to move further in my career.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

This week, I’m going to educate you on all things leadership coaching, including…

  • What leadership coaching truly is
  • Why it’s worth the investment in yourself, even if you aren’t a CEO
  • The “myths” surrounding leadership
  • And more!

Leadership, contrary to popular opinion, doesn’t always come naturally…but there are wonderful, talented people out there who are able to help you grow into the leader you want to be!

When you go to work conferences, to career coaching sessions, to trainings…are they giving you advice on how to BE? Or are they giving you more things to DO?

You do not need more “to dos” checked off of your list in order to advance in your career. What you need to learn is how to be.

How to be a leader. How to be a director. How to be a manager or an executive or whatever that next step is. When it comes to growth, BEING is the secret sauce to having any result you want in your life.

This week, I’m going to be talking about:

  • What identity has to do with career advancement
  • Why my misconceptions about “doing” nearly cost me an amazing opportunity at work
  • Why you need to stop focusing on the “doing” in order to grow

No more to-dos here. I’m going to tell you all about what it means to BE.

If you only take one thing away from this week’s episode, I want it to be this: there are other ways to get a promotion outside of being rewarded for hard work. You can actually plan your own promotion.

If you’re feeling doubtful, I completely understand—this is not the way we’re taught in corporate. No one else in corporate is even talking about this. But it IS possible…I know, because I’ve done it. And if no one else in corporate is going to tell you how, I’m happy to be the first!

This week, I’ll be telling you about…

  • My experience with the mindset of “earning” promotions
  • Why I used to be immersed in the “quiet quitter” mindset…and why I don’t support that ideology
  • What happened when I shifted my mindset and began planning my promotions

If you’re feeling frustrated by constantly being overlooked when promotion season rolls around, you need to listen to this episode…and you need my Position to Promotion guide! The link to download can be found below!

In the corporate world, confidence is key when you’re looking to reach the next rung of the career ladder.

Unfortunately, no one is talking about what to do if you struggle with confidence—or why these silent expectations are placed on you in the first place.

Struggling with self-confidence in the workplace can have many causes, such as…

  • The way you were raised
  • Toxic work environments
  • A preoccupation with past mistakes

These are just a few of the reasons you may not be displaying the kind of confidence people look for when assessing potential candidates for promotions. But no matter the cause, there are plenty of ways you can begin to build up your self-confidence and let go of the limiting beliefs holding you back. Listen now to hear my five tips for boosting your confidence in the workplace.

If I asked each of you listening to this podcast whether or not you’re suffering from self-worth issues, I think you’d probably say no…even if you are.

I’ve noticed an invisible stigma surrounding self-worth issues. Nobody wants to admit they struggle with self-image, especially in the workplace. But ignoring the problem doesn’t make it go away…and if you don’t solve it, you may find your promotion dreams continually dashed because of it.

If you find yourself struggling with…

  • Tying your identity to how MUCH you work rather than how WELL you work

  • Constantly going above and beyond in order to prove to yourself that you belong there

  • Having no activities or identity outside of work—when someone asks you what you do, you give them your title

  • Feeling guilty for holding your boundaries and constantly compromising on them

…then you may have more difficulties with self-image than you think.

How do you stop compromising on this? Let me tell you how to boost your self-worth in order to prepare yourself to get to the next level in your career.

Last week, we discussed the five types of imposter syndrome, and how we can identify which one we suffer from and where it shows up in our work; this week, I want to talk about the root causes of imposter syndrome but most importantly, how to overcome imposter syndrome at work. Identifying the root cause is a huge step in overcoming it in your career.

For some, it stems from a single bad experience they may have had early on in their careers. For others, it could stem from their upbringing. For others, it could be limiting beliefs.

Everyone is different, and everyone has different places where their imposter syndrome has grown from. But if we can track down that root, it will be that much easier to fight off those lingering thoughts and fears that are holding us back from stepping into the roles we deserve.

Ready for the conclusion to my three-part series on imposter syndrome? Let's finish this series strong!

Last week, we talked about what imposter syndrome is and how it can show up in your professional life. Today, I'm going to talk about the five types of imposter syndrome and how to recognize their unique symptoms.   The five imposter syndrome archetypes I'm going to be discussing today are:   1. The Perfectionist 2. The Superwoman 3. The Natural Genius 4. The Soloist 5. The Expert

You don't always experience just one of these—many times, I've found myself struggling with symptoms from all five—but there is often one overarching type that we struggle with depending on our skills and our backgrounds, and knowing which it is can help us identify it, combat it, and ultimately defeat it.   Ready for part two of my imposter syndrome series? Let's get started!   EPISODE RESOURCES:   Connect with Rebecca https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-muriuki/ https://instagram.com/rebeccakmuriuki   Apply to work with me https://bit.ly/designedtolead   Grab your Position to Promotion Guide https://bit.ly/positiontopromotion

If you're experiencing thoughts such as...   * "Sooner or later, they're going to realize I'm not as good as they think I am." * "I just got lucky; it had nothing to do with me." * "Who am I to be doing ____?"

Then you're likely suffering from imposter syndrome.   Imposter syndrome keeps you from reaching for what you deserve, whispering lies about why you haven't earned them; why you aren't good enough to hold that position, to get that raise, to give that presentation, etcetera. Imposter syndrome will convince you that no matter what you do, you will never be good enough for the things you want...if you let it.   Today will be the first in a three-part series discussing what imposter syndrome is, why it can't be trusted, and how you can defeat it. Let's get started.   EPISODE RESOURCES: bit.ly/designedtolead   Connect with Rebecca LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/rebeccamuriuki Instagram: instagram.com/rebeccakmuriuki

Are you showing up as a leader or a follower? Maybe you think being a shadow and working endless hours each day is the key to your promotion. For six to seven years of my ten-year career, I was working on the wrong things because I had the wrong presumptions of what it took to get a promotion. When I did get a promotion, I thought I got it because I was working hard, staying late, and going the extra mile. In this episode, I share the four secret ingredients to advancing your career into a leadership role without running out of hours each day.

Highlights from this episode:

  • The misconceptions about getting promoted (2:47)
  • Demonstrating your ability to lead (4:51)
  • Leading yourself to lead others (7:43)
  • Developing your leadership identity (10:17)
  • Showing up in service to others (13:20)
  • Taking responsibility and making decisions as a leader (14:36)

From today onwards, decide that you will take responsibility and start to wear the identity of a leader, respond and show up as a leader in every situation you can. If you're waiting for someone to tell you that you're ready for a promotion, you are not taking responsibility for your career.

The good news is that responsibility is a choice that we are all free to make, and it starts with the awareness that taking responsibility frees you from being dependent on someone else for your success.

Listen to this hot episode to find out how to create your career freedom, and start to make things happen for you in your career by taking RESPONSIBILITY. We specifically talk about:

  • What responsibility is not: blaming, waiting & complaining
  • Why relinquishing responsibility actually takes away your freedom
  • How to take responsibility in your career

When you hear team members, do you immediately think permanent hire? There are a lot of misconceptions about what I mean when I reference a team member. It does not have to be a permanent hire; it can be someone you bring on for a short-term basis. Before I dive in, have you listened to episode 28 yet in this four-part series? If not, hit pause and do that, and then I'll meet you back here to talk about how to avoid mistakes when hiring in your business.

Today, I'm diving into 4 mistakes to avoid when hiring in your business. After this episode, you'll see why hiring is such a strategic part of your business. Also, why hiring and team strategy are congruent with your system strategy. So grab a notebook and pen, and let's get started.

"You need to have the foundational systems and organization set up so that your team members can actually be successful in their roles " - Rebecca Kay.

Highlights include:

  1. Why this topic (3:54)
  2. Mistake #1 - Not being clear (5:19)
  3. Mistake #2 - Hiring too late (6:37)
  4. Mistake #3 - Hire first, organize later (8:49)
  5. Mistake #4 - Thinking hiring is a magic bullet (10:22)

Have you made any of these mistakes in your business? Are you thinking about who to add next to your team? I'd love to know! Come chat with me on Instagram or join my free Facebook Community.

In today's show, we chat with Angelica Marnier who is a professional course creator and is the Founder of Corporate Countdown: A web-based coaching system that helps women transition out of their 9 to 5 jobs and into careers that excite them.

In this episode, we talk about

  • How to get started in online courses
  • What topics are hot right now
  • How simple it is to create online courses, as in the 3 basic tools you need to get started
  • How to put your course into passive income mode, and so much more.

Here's more about Angelica: After starting her career at Fox & Disney, Angelica quickly learned that corporate America was not a good fit for her, so she dove feet first into real estate financing.

Unfortunately, when the real estate market crashed during the great recession she made the move back to corporate America, still in real estate financing. She worked her way to the top where she was dealing with the firm’s highest-echelon clients, those having $1M+ in liquid assets.

While working in real estate, she and her co-workers would talk and dream about getting out of their desk jobs, but had no clue how. They needed a proven system they could follow and see results that would allow them to replace their income so that they could spend more time with their kids and spouses, instead of giving the best hours of their day to someone else’s dream.

They wanted to have a safe transition out, so there were no major interruptions in their income…and that’s how Corporate Countdown came to be.

Angelica has helped many women through her business, in transitioning from the corporate world to becoming their own bosses, and how to do it sustainably through creating online courses that they are passionate about.

You are going to grab a notebook and a pen, I took a ton of them. Enjoy the show!

Ever heard of the phrase "you can't have your cake and eat it"?

In today's episode, we are totally busting the myth because you can, and our guest of the day is giving out the steps on how exactly to do it! We are talking to Maria Kertesz who has built two successful empires as a mom of 3 doing all the things.

In this episode you will learn from a 6-figure entrepreneur:

  • That it is possible to have your cake and eat it too (you CAN be a successful business owner and put your children and family first!)
  • How to plan and organize your schedule around your family's routine
  • How to be the CEO of your calendar, and get things done & not be afraid of outsourcing
  • Maria's weekly planning routine

Maria helps ambitious moms who want more for themselves and their families create a business that fits into their day so that they can still put their family first while having purpose, passion, and profit.

Maria is a stay-at-home/working mom of 3 kids (ages 10, 7, and 4 years old) living in sunny North Carolina with her husband, John. 10 years ago, Maria was a special education teacher who decided to give everything up to become a stay-at-home mom and while it was exactly what she needed to do and she felt blessed that she could, something was missing. She loved working, connecting with people, and creating.

Out of financial need and craziness, Maria started a very successful cake decorating business that I build from the ground up over the course of 6 years.

This was truly where she made every entrepreneurial mistake you could think of, and learned so much!

And while she loved that business, she had to let it go after adding 2 more babies into the mix which is when she was introduced to the world of network marketing.

6 years and 2 companies later, Maria has built her business to a team of over 1000 women and earns 6 figures. She does this all around her children's schedules and her busy life and wouldn't change a thing!

You are in for a treat because we don't just talk about business but how to bake in your business schedule into your daily routine around your family's needs without feeling overwhelmed. And you'll understand why we are all about cake terms because of the gorgeous cakes Maria used to make in her first business. But most importantly. you will get to hear how a 6-figure business owner organizes and sticks to her own schedule.

If you're here for that, let's head onto the show!
