Gene Casey's Roots-Rock Music Captivating Fans on an Adventurous Journey. In this episode your host Steve Yusko get you acquainted with Gene Casey, the artist behind some fantasitc Alt-Country Music.
Gene formed the Lone Sharks, “the house band of the Hamptons,” where bars were plentiful and audiences – both the local and the celebrated – were robust and loyal. Over the course of the next few decades Gene and the evolving line-up of Sharks “played – and tore up – every roadhouse, bar, and honky tonk from Manhattan to Montauk” (Bop Magazine), sharing the bill and backing legendary roots rock & roll acts as Wanda Jackson, the Band, Bo Diddley, Sleepy LaBeef, NRBQ, and the Ventures.
Gene’s original music met with great acclaim with local and international indie radio play. Several of his roots-drenched songs have been used in “A Prairie Home Companion” and on the soundtracks to television and feature films, including “Justified” and “Sons of Anarchy” ; the 2012 thriller “The Tall Man” starring Jessica Biel, the 2013 release “The Killing Season” starring Robert DeNiro, and Rob Reiner’s “Being Charlie.”
In 2014 Gene and the Lone Sharks were inducted into the Dan’s Papers “Best of the Best” Hall of Fame, having been honored over 20 times. received the Long Island Sound Award by the L.I. Music Hall of Fame, “for contributions to the Island’s musical landscape.”
2017 saw the release of “Guitar In The Rain” an album celebrating the roots of contemporary Americana with original songs that evoke the romantic sweep of 60s pop, classic C&W and the raw untamed spirit of early rock & roll.
2020 brings “Free Country: Essential Recordings” a compilation of some of the best songs culled from 20 years of work, as well as a unique arrangement of the public domain standard, “Home on the Range” where all of Gene’s influences and obsessions seem to converge.

How to Successfully Navigate Tumultuous Times in the Music Industry with Gregory Dwane. In this episode you'll hear from Gregory Dwane, a successful industry veteran who has managed the twists and turns of the music industry. Starting out from a rural town in North Carolina to Nashville and finally working the music studios in New York city. This Singer/Songwriter can be discribed as Alt-Country and he has so many stories to tell. We'll hear three of his songs as we learn some great skills for musicians and singer/songwriters to navigate the tumultuous waters of the music business today. Find Gregory Dwane's Spotify List here
Gregory Dwane is a lifer. From his humble beginnings in rural North Carolina to eventually touring around the world as a tech and his recent work as producer for Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls, Dwane has seen many facets of the music industry first-hand. An in-the-pocket rhythm section, some smoking electric guitar and fiddle, and some classic rock riffs for good measure, all amount to an infectious debut that’s as refreshing as it is retro. An interest in recording engineering inspired Dwane to relocate from his home near Trinity, N.C. to New York in the early ‘90s, which eventually led to his producing records and playing in punk bands. Ten years later, amid the crashing and burning that hit after years of alcohol abuse, a phone call to a friend and former manager who was working with Alanis Morrisette ended up being a lifeline. Dwane hightailed it to LA and joined Morrisette’s road crew as a keyboard tech, a serendipitous move that suddenly changed his trajectory in a major way. “I went from thinking my world was over to touring the world,” Dwane recalls. The Alanis gig led to tech work with Dave Navarro and Macy Gray, and eventually to getting sober. “That opened up my whole world,” he says, as it opened new doors to work with like-minded sober musicians, including a Sony record deal with the band Mellowdrone, which he joined as bassist.
Shortly thereafter, an unexpected entry into fatherhood led him to look for more stable employment. Enter friend Michael Fitzpatrick (of Fitz and the Tantrums), who introduced him to jingle writing, which he ended up doing for the next 15 years, a period that also saw him producing two albums for Amy Ray and working with others in the riot grrrl / queercore scene (Kaia Wilson of Team Dresch, The Butchies, and more). Despite the healthy paychecks, eventually he burned out on jingle writing and music in general, as he explains, “it’s a hard way to make a living … a fully produced song practically every day for 15 years.” Dwane left the music industry completely — at least as far as making a living — and instead took up fine art painting, which led him to launch a small gallery in Brooklyn.

How to Create Amazing Community in a Rock Choir with Tony Lechner & Rock Voices.
Rock Voices sets up Community Choirs who sing Rock Music. In this episode we unpack this great program, which establishes choirs in communities with no audtion for amatures to bring their voices to life!
Tony Lechner is the founder who took this idea and ran with it. After ten years in the making, surviving the Covid Quarintine, this a great story for us to unpack.
Our mission statement is “healing ourselves and others through song”.
Studies have shown that the sound and sensation of singing in a room with other people works a special kind of magic on us all, including improved mood, focus, deep breathing, social support, cognitive stimulation, and more. Read on to learn how to be part of this amazing experience!
Can anyone join Rock Voices?Yes! Anyone 18+ can join. You don’t have to read music; you don’t have to audition to join (but if you want a solo, we hold auditions for those once the season is underway). Just look for a choir near you by going to our enrollment site and once you’ve found a location, follow the instructions for enrolling and paying. You can also just enroll, and hold off on payment until you’ve attended three rehearsals: we want you to experience this and make sure it’s right for you!
How does this work? The choir meets for about 12 weeks, rehearsing more songs each week in preparation for a live concert, complete with a live, professional rock band. At last, you get to actually BE a rockstar!!
Still not sure? That’s okay. Just use our online system to enroll, and hold off on payment until you’ve decided. This way we’ll know how much sheet music to print out, and you’ll receive any emails your director sends out prior to the first night of rehearsals.

Conquering Cantankerous Divide with Hopeful Folk Music by Josie Bello
Folk Singer/Songwriter joins our host Steve Yusko for an engaging conversation about the power of music, the divide in our nation and her rise on the music scene as a self-proclaimed, "Late-bloomer". We explore three of songs and learn about ways to further expose original music in our world.
Josie Bello has been musical from an early age. She would often walk around the house, humming or singing some tune she had formed in her head, so frequently that her mother would ask her to "please pipe down".
Growing up in Queens, NY, it is no surprise that her musical hero is Bruce Springsteen - an artist she wishes she could channel into her own songwriting at times. But then again, doesn’t every songwriter want… need... to channel “The Boss.”
Josie's writing process is spontaneous, at times a phrase or chord progression that gets written down only to sit for a time, until the moment is right. Other times it comes in a rush, allowing her to grab the inspiration of the moment and run with it.
In the past few years, she’s recorded and released two albums with songwriter and producer, Mike Nugent.
It is her desire that her music can provide you with a simple respite from the troubles of the day or, if nothing else, the simple joy that music holds.

Damn Tall Buildings Independently Release Their 3rd Album, due out Sept 9
Brooklyn, NY — Acoustic Americana trio fed on bluegrass, roots rock, old time, and vintage swing, Damn Tall Buildings are excited to release their 3rd album, Sleeping Dogs, on September 9. Whether sharing lead vocals and instrumental solos or blending their voices into loose, joyous harmony, the three members of Damn Tall Buildings—multi-instrumentalist and primary lyricist Max Capistran (guitar and banjo), bassist Sasha Dubyk, and fiddler Avery Ballotta—delight in entertaining. Sleeping Dogs is a sensory treat that will have you smiling, dancing, and singing along.
Sleeping Dogs is a bop about looking things smack-dab-right-in-the-face and is essentially about how it has become almost impossible to not be constantly influenced by current events, media, and all of the other things that surround you in your day-to-day life. “Snow Crash” by Neal Sephenson—a bizarre, mind-altering romp through the infocalypse— is high on the band's reading list. Damn Tall Buildings says, “The impact that things outside ourselves have on us, specifically, the rise of social media and all that comes with it, leads to an exponential increase of people’s awareness of other people’s lives, and how that affects them and how they feel about their life.”
The trio is individually from all over the United States (New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Montana), but were born as a band while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA in 2013. They started as buskers on Newbury Street in Boston, started touring nationally, and then moved the band to Brooklyn in 2017.

David Noyes is a true sage of the music industry here on Long Island. Join us in conversation as we unlock the secrets to success in the music business and navigat the waters of balance between giging and life.
I gathered some great inspiration from my time with David. You'll get to hear some of his original music as well as stories of his journey in the business.
David Noyes has been "playing about town" for decades since he was a teen from Manhattan and then growing up in East Hampton. David managed a musical career while exploring his art with the band "Cadillac Moon". Here's his bandmate Al and his take on the early success of the band: In the big-screen thriller, “Devil’s Advocate,” the band “Cadillac Moon” makes a special appearance as the house band and performs one of its original numbers.
The Cadillac Moon lineup includes Rich Campbell, keyboards; Cliff Hackford,
drums; Mike Nugent, guitar; Santoriello, vocals; and David Noyes, bass.
Tonight’s show will be the group’s second performance this year at the Road’s
End. Santoriello says the band got the “Devil’s Advocate” gig when the
musicians union in New York, Local 802, was notified that the film’s director
needed a rock band. “The cool part,” says Cadillac Moon vocalist Al Santoriello, reflecting on
the film shoot, “is that we got to play our own song. (Show Me Your Tattoo)
“They asked us to prepare a version of Robert Johnson’s Crossroads’- which
we did. Then, as I’m sitting there on the movie set, the director got a phone
call, and it was someone at Warner Brothers saying there was a legal
entanglement with the song. I heard him say,OK, I guess we’ll let the band
play their own song. “It really was fantastic.”Connect with The Long Island Sound Podcast Intro/Outro song in this episode:“Fading out Fast” from Mike Nugent’s album, Mike Nugent and the Blue Moon Band . Opening Naration by Faith Yusko

How To Navigate Tumultuous Seas with the Hopeful Inspiring Music of Toby Tobias
Toby Tobias
Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Huntington Station N.Y. based Toby Tobias has immersed himself in many American music genres while never leaving behind his roots in the rhythms and melodies of his homeland. Toby is excited to be bringing his brand of African-infused American Global Music to the ears of listeners with some of Long Island's best and most accomplished musicians.
Reviews:
"Putting politics and the problems of Africa aside, this is a brilliantly put-together album of quality musicianship and songs each with their own identity and style all from a man who has not forgotten his life and musical roots. As they would say in Zambia (Bemba), "Zikomo" Toby."
– Rory Stanbridge, FATEA Magazine UK
"Tobias' palpable love of Africa informs the whole CD in a way that is powerful and moving. Though the album shows the traces of his musical background and influences - which is as it should be - it also sounds very fresh. That's a pretty rare achievement in music today."
– Rupert Wates, Singer-Songwriter
AFRICA YOU BELONG TO ME2014

REACH OUT2017

"...The sound of Africa comes through loud and clear in the EP which gives a wonderful taster introduction to Toby's style of music."

The Locksmiths: Searing Vocals Combing Creative Musing & Americana Music
The Locksmiths are an Americana husband-and-wife band mixing rich melodies with evocative lyrics. The Queens natives weave a Southern Gothic tapestry through bluegrass-inspired folk-rock.
Robert and Krissy met in 2010 through a mutual friend looking to put a band together. Upon falling in love and abandoning that project, The Locksmiths was born. Taking their mutual love of The Beatles as well as their admiration of Americana artists like The Band and Gillian Welch, Robert and Krissy began crafting their own sound. The Locksmiths soon took shape in New York City and have since toured major cities including Nashville, Austin, and Indianapolis. They released their debut album in 2016 (backed by Cole Quest & The City Pickers) to positive reviews. Whether singing about love and despair or triumph and tragedy, their songs not only inhabit a world of Faulkneresque proportions but also envelop the personal lives of the writers as well.
“A truly stirring vocal performance.” - Rachel Cholst (Adobe & Teardrops)
“Raucous Americana… incredibly clever lyrics that bite.” - Greg Jones (Ear to the Ground Music)
“Crescendoing poetry crooned with grit. Bock’s storytelling has become more crystalline than ever before.” - Nicholas Horner (Porch Stomp)Connect with The Long Island Sound Podcast:Website: Https://GigDestiny.com/podcastFollow Steve Yusko, GigDestiny.com, and his adventures: Website: https://www.GigDestiny.comTwitter, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook

Since the age of 17, Brother Dave has been gigging with various NYC-based bands, touring all over the East Coast and Europe, and performing for audiences of all ages and tastes.
While he has the distinction of having opened for such world-class performers as Johnny Winter, Dickey Betts, Buddy Miles, Elvin Bishop, Debbie Davies, Room full of Blues, Shemieka Copeland, and Little Charlie and The Night Cats, he is just as likely to be seen entertaining the patrons of a small intimate lounge or private party.

Pete Mancini got his start as the frontman and songwriter of Butchers Blind, a critically acclaimed rock band from NYC. In 2017 he released his debut solo album Foothill Freeway, which explored the Americana influences that were a hallmark of his former band. The album garnered rave reviews from NPR, No Depression, and Newsday. He hit the road to support the album and made his network television debut on NBC’s Today in Nashville.
His second full-length album Flying First Class was released in 2019. The album was met with critical acclaim and made Mancini’s debut appearance on the AMA radio charts. Extensive tours of the East Coast, Midwest, and South followed, establishing Mancini as a national artist.
In the Summer of 2020, Mancini flew down to Dial Back Sound in Water Valley MS to begin work on his third album, Killing The Old Ways. The 10-song album, produced by Matt Patton (Drive-By Truckers) and Bronson Tew, marks a significant artistic leap forward. The album features contributions from Jay Gonzalez (Drive-By Truckers), Jamison Hollister, Schaefer Llana, and Horace Willis. The album will be released on April 8th, 2022 on Paradiddle Records.
Over the years, Mancini has opened for acts such as Jimmy Webb, Blues Traveler, Gin Blossoms, Pure Prairie League, Robbie Fulks, Amy Helm, Larry Campbell & Theresa Williams, Kevin Gordon, and Iain Matthews.
Pete is also a member of The Famous Doctor Scanlon Band, which performs the music of Travis McKeveny.

With a powerhouse voice dripping with a haunting sensuality that slips easily into growling old-school blues tones, Kelli speaks her heart like a beat poet in a late-night dive. The kind you only know if you’re in the know. Her music is an amalgamation of authentic blues/rock and heart-on-her-sleeve singer/songwriter pop with folk/gospel roots. Known in some circles as “The Phoenix”, Kelli was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. She moved to New York in 2012, with $500 in cash, chasing the heels of Hurricane Sandy. Learning music like so many others in the church choir, Kelli graduated to fronting a hard rock band and a folk duo, writing her own music at an early age. Swiftly moving through the ranks of Long Island’s bristling music scene, she has quickly become a known name. Kelli has been nominated as the Best Singer from Long Island 2021 by Bethpage’s prestigious “Best of Long Island” award series and named one of Newsday’s Rising Stars of Long Island for 2019. She has been featured on Rollin' With legendary Rob Rush of 94.3 The Shark, The Tedeschi Trucks podcast, Knock ‘Em Dead Comedy, UnRated Magazine, UK Radio’s Don’s Hit List, Governor's Radio, Breaking Sound Radio, Rising Stars Radio with Rick Eberle, The Douglas Coleman Show, OhBaeBee, DiscoverYou Radio, The Long-Islander, and The Island Now, among others.
Kelli has been compared to Bonnie Raitt, Chris Cornell, Susan Tedeschi, and Aretha Franklin. Her dynamic blues tones and gospel nods have been called a kind of ethereal blues.
Kelli has recorded at Milk House Studios with multi-platinum producer Philip A. Jimenez (Wheatus, Teenage Dirtbag) and Blokhed Studios with Grammy-nominated producer Tommy Spiegel. Susan Aquila (recorded and worked with Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, and Steven Tyler) appears on “Cathedral”. She resides just outside of New York City.

Virtuoso Slide Guitarist & Powerhouse, Ace Stringman Mark Newman on how to Deliver
As I navigate the musical waters of the Long Island Sound, more often than not I’m blessed to find some great music well up in my wheelhouse. And that’s how I felt as I experienced Mark Newman’s music Growing up in New York, Mark Newman’s musical journey has taken him around the world several times as both sideman and singer/songwriter. This ace string man (guitar, lap steel, mandolin, dobro) and accomplished songwriter is the type of singer whose warm and expressive voice sounds like an old friend. He put it all together on 2006’s “Must Be A Pony” In 2010 he took a quantum leap forward with the stunning “Walls Of Jericho” and has just released, “Brussels”, a live solo EP. “Empirical Truth”, his latest CD was released in June, 2018 (Danal Music, LLC, by WBA Records). It won best CD from the Long Island Blues Society. Sharing the stage with such notables as soul legend Sam Moore (Sam & Dave), John Oates(Hall and Oates), Jim McCarty (Yardbirds, Renaissance),the late Willy DeVille (Mink DeVille), Bobby Whitlock (Derek and the Dominos) and Sam The Sham, has given Newman the perspective to craft an individualistic sound framed in straight-from-the-hip rock’n’roll, simmering with the subtle flavors of blues, R’n’B, funk, folk and soul.(New York, NY) — It was announced today that The Long Island Blues Society has named EMPIRICAL TRUTH by Mark Newman their 2019 CD Challenge winner. As the local winner, EMPIRICAL TRUTH will represent the Long Island Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge’s Self-Produced CD Contest; which happens in Memphis from January 28th to February 1st, 2020. Empirical Truth is also currently #1 in its category on the Reverbnation charts. Listen to Empirical Truth on Spotify here:https://open.spotify.com/album/3Y5bQm8AOQPoFGmRyyaPVB
It can certainly be said that a labor of love is not much of labor at all, and with singer/songwriter and guitarist Mark Newman’s latest release “Empirical Truth” (via Danal Music) this is very much the case, as he’s proven once again his power of true musicianship.

The Empowering Music and Heavenly Voice of Nico Padden and How to be a Pirate Queen
BIOGRAPHY
Born and raised in a musician family on Long Island, NY, Nico has built up a supportive local following. She’s currently gigging on the East Coast relentlessly in support of her 2016 LP, A Light in the Dark. Powerfully raw yet hopeful, Nico’s sophomore effort follows her 2013 EP Waterbird (find both on AppleMusic, Spotify, or NicoPadden.com.) A true folk-rock gypsy, Nico has performed everywhere from concert halls to farmers’ markets, living rooms to dive bars, backyards to street corners, coffeehouses to fancy restaurants, and everywhere in between. She’s a regular street performer in her current home of Queens, NYC, and has won over many crowds of strangers with her impish grin; frank, entertaining banter; and cathartic sound. Her music and voice have been compared to the likes of Alanis Morisette, Brandi Carlile, & Carole King.

Nelson Montana
Music Industry Insights from Composer, Arranger, Artist, Musician, Nelson Montana. A Conversation and music from Concert Halls to Studio to Broadway
If you are a singer/songwriter or just an artist who dabbles with music, there's so much to learn from my guest, Nelson Montana. His eclectic interest in various genres is inspiring and noteworthy. Join us in this fascinating conversation on the Long Island Sound.
Arranger / Composer /Bassist / Multi-Instrumentalist / Vocalist / Producer / Engineer
Nelson Montana is a New York-based musician who is also a producer, composer, and arranger. Though primarily a bassist he plays a total of eleven instruments.
https://soundcloud.com/nelson-montana
Nelson’s career goes back to when he played with the critically acclaimed band “Popular Science” as a drummer and songwriter before he switched to bass as his main instrument years later. Since then, he’s been a full-time bassist working in various venues and all styles of music, from concert halls to studio work to Broadway plays. Consequently, he’s the only person to have been featured in both Modern Drummer magazine as well as Bass Player magazine. And his guitar work on his album “Don’t Fear the Reverb” has also received high praise.
Nelson has played with members of the bands Steely Dan, Daft Punk, Jimmy Buffet, and Stevie Winwood. He’s also featured in the new book “From The Record” along with music industry legends, Robin Gibb, Neil Sedaka, and Kelly Rowland.
Nelson currently works mostly as a producer and recording engineer, but still manages to record much of his own music. He has over 300 videos on Youtube where he plays all the instruments and the styles range from Rock to Jazz, to Funk to Country. Being so eclectic is difficult to market because people expect an artist to do one thing, but as Nelson puts it, “I enjoy all types of music and want to express myself in a variety of ways. If others enjoy it, I’ve succeeded in what I’m trying to do.”
That is why he currently makes all of his recordings available free of charge to his fans.

Indie Americana/Folk Artist Delaney Hafener reveals her musical journey. Her ethereal voice resonates in beautiful harmony with her music. Over the past decade, Delaney has covered tremendous ground in live performances, original music as well as touring with her band.
Before she could speak, Delaney Hafener has found the best way for her to communicate is through music. She began singing Gram Parsons and Neil Young songs with her dad, and at the age of 12 started learning guitar with an old Gibson she revived from the basement. She wrote her first songs with the help and encouragement of her mom and began cutting her teeth as a performer at open mics when she was 14.
Hafener founded the indie-folk band Pandafan at 17 and found some regional success with the group. Based mostly in NYC, they’ve played in venues such as Mercury Lounge, Cafe Lena, The Bug Jar, Gypsy Sally’s Vinyl Lounge, Rockwood Music Hall, Suffolk Theater, and Guild Hall, and many others. At the height of their gigs, the young band was playing up to 5 gigs a week with frequent double-header Saturdays in the busy Long Island summer season.
Now 24, Hafener is working under the name The Belle Curves. She draws influence from the vast history of American roots music, from The Carter Family and Jimmie Rogers to The White Stripes and Waxahatchee. Hafener sings lead and plays bass, and she’s recruited her dad to co-produce and play electric guitar. The Belle Curves began as a solo project with a rotating cast of musicians but has since evolved to feature a more regular lineup with Nick Balzano on drums and fellow Americana singer-songwriters Pete Mancini, Sarah Gross, and Anne O’Rourke contributing guitar parts and vocal harmonies. They’ve coined the term “garage-Americana” to describe their unique combination of distorted guitars blended with saccharine vocal harmonies and serious songwriting with a not-so-serious attitude.
The Belle Curves’ sound is akin to bands such as Brandi Carlile, The Wild Reeds, Lucinda Williams, and The Jayhawks.
I have combined my work as a musician and freelance recordist with my love of being part of enthusiastic and creative teams. I enjoy doing work that is mission-driven and in line with my desire to help build a more just, equitable world and dismantle all kinds of oppression.
The Belle Curves is led by Delaney Hafener, formerly of indie-folk outfit Pandafan, and features a rotating cast of musicians. They have crafted a unique sound inspired by the many traditions of Americana, complementing introspective lyrics and a songwriting style that can be reminiscent of both the Laurel Canyon and Bakersfield. The Belle Curves' music touches on themes of self-doubt, progressive politics, identity, and disaffection, working to create a distinctly youthful folk aesthetic.
A collection of protest music for this moment in American history, The Belle Curves' EP "2020" has been described as "absolutely brutal. If Dar Williams and Stephin Merritt started a Woody Guthrie inspired band, it would be something like The Belle Curves," according to Country Queer.

Looking to inspire kids to explore their musical talent? Lena & Brian have the answers as we do a deep dive into family music! Over the past decade, Lena has taken a deep dive into the world of family music. Her album “Happy as Clams” (2013) earned a Parents Choice “fun stuff” award as well as won first place in the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest for the song “I Love U.” For her clever lyrics and zaniness, one critic dubbed her “the Carol Burnett” of children’s music. The album featured the talents of their family (her husband, grandma, mom, dad, brothers, nephews, and nieces) and friends. It was recorded at Paradiddle Records in Huntington. #ChildrensMusic, #MusicianInterviews
She was inspired to begin writing music after listening to Laurie Berkner's songs. A band was formed dubbed “The Happy Clam Band” which has performed around the Long Island area including the Great South Bay Music Festival, The Oyster Festival as well as at libraries, pre-schools, nature centers, petting zoos, homes, and more. The band includes her husband Brian Smith (pianist and arranger), Michael Leuci (guitarist/drummer/arranger), and Michael Palumbo (bassist) as well as other guest artists. Lena met James Packard, Theatre manager of The Long Island Children’s Museum. An avid theater lover and performer, she began to write interactive musical theater for families for The Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM), including three educational musicals: Happy as Clams; The Princess Frog, and My Butterfly.
Lena and her husband have also served as the Master of Ceremonies and performers for “Puppets after Dark,” a local puppet slam. Brian and Lena also participated in the Global Switch-On Telethon based in Australia in 2021. The telethon raised money and awareness for endangered species including the North Atlantic Right Whale and Monarch Butterfly.
Note: Liz Jeffery sings on "My Butterfly" In 2020 when churches shut down during the Pandemic, Lena developed an online show for families called Happy as Lambs, in which she wrote a new song each week focused on the Gospel reading. The show featured her whole family and co-host Liz Jeffery. Steven Nappie

In 2000 The Complex released their follow-up album "Songs From Forgotten Children". In November 2021 The band reunited on Long Island for the first time in over 14 years.

A mission to heal through music. If you want to know the person behind the music and the great artists that contribute to the Long Island Sound this is the episode for you. ? Every once in a blue moon, lady luck strikes, and your curiosity blossoms and fascinations develop as you discover someone new. This muse struck me as I was drilling down on my encounter with Rorie Kelly, a fierce and joyful singer/songwriter from Long Island.
Rorie is not easily defined and that’s what I love about her unabashed style of music & muse. In this episode, there is no mask to remove from the artist, just raw honesty and joy to encounter. As I began to peel away at her catalog of music, I have discovered a thread of social justice and a beautiful voice for the marginalized in our society. Although we have never met face-to-face yet, I have been blessed to get a glimpse of a human that I want to know more about. In unraveling the “mystery” of the Long Island Sound, I endeavor to reveal the person behind the music, and as with this episode, the journey goes just a bit deeper.
We never discussed Neil Young during our visit, but his lyric has been making its way to my mind in thinking about Rorie, “Think of me as the one you’ve never figured”! Her battle cry and melodic scream are to bring healing through music. As a prophetic voice and lament on the way we might see with a new vision, I welcome her invitation as she speaks up for herself and her community!
Walter Brueggemann said it well”
“The task of prophetic ministry is to nurture, nourish, and evoke a consciousness and perception alternative to the consciousness and perception of the dominant culture around us.”
The new album Shadow Work is about shining a light in the darkness, getting real, getting raw, and healing wounds. “The practice of shadow work is about sifting through those parts of ourselves that we have pushed down and suppressed over the years,” the singer explains. “It’s about showing up for our whole selves and finding healing.” The production is big, dark, and performed largely by just two people – Rorie herself, and her father and production partner, Kevin Kelly. “It was exciting to us to see just how much power we could pack into these songs as two humans in a studio with a vision,” says Rorie. The songwriting looks deeply into topics like self-worth, growth, and letting go, and how our culture treats people who don’t fit the mainstream “default.”
Rorie started a weekly Livestream series called Monday Night Muses, which streams every Monday night from 7-9 pm ET at twitch.tv/roriekelly. For more information or to contact Rorie, visit www.roriekelly.com.

Steve Yusko our host interviews Andy Clooney, a native Long Islander who is an ambassador of Irish American music for the United States and abroad. Steve gets to know his guest's roots and inspiration. Andy Cooney has nine Carnegie Hall sellouts under his belt and filled The David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center with The New York Tenors. His outstanding voice and dynamic stage presence have long been a favorite among young and old alike. His talent and versatility provide the ability to deliver a song directly to the hearts of his audience; Andy is surely one of the greatest singing sensations on the Irish Music scene today. Christened Irish America’s Favorite Son by The New York Times, it is a title he richly deserves. Andy Cooney is one of The New York Tenors, along with New York Italian Tenor Christopher Macchio & New York Puerto Rican Tenor Daniel Rodriquez, a trio that has been receiving high critical acclaim for several years. Andy has recorded 19 albums to date, including Bright Brand-New Day with Phil Coulter and his Orchestra. Andy and Phil frequently tour together and in March 2017, completed a three-week tour of the US. This release has been getting huge airplay all over Ireland and the UK with his hit singles On the Eighth Day and My Rose of Ballinrobe, both his own compositions. 2020 turned out to be an unusual year where Coronavirus shut down the music industry. In 2020, Andy managed to release 4 new singles during the pandemic, “Take Me Back To Dublin”, “We’re All In This Together” with his son Ryan, “Come Tennessee Me Tonight” with Country Music legend Larry Gatlin and his latest single release in November 2020, “The Waltz of the Angels”. In episode six, we discover a compelling journey and one musician’s path. As most roads in the discovery of talent have many detours, I believe Steve Martino’s story will be familiar to many of us.
The Lennon and McCartney lyrics from “The Long and Winding Road” comes to mind:
The long and winding road,
That leads to your door
Will never disappear
I've seen that road before
For those of us who picked up an instrument in our youth and explored the magic of performance. I invite you into the conversation I had with Stephen Martino from Babylon, NY.
We discover the twist and turns, the pit stops, and motivation to get back into the race. It is a long and winding road, but once you experience those moments of magic, you’ll hopefully recognize the “door” that will never disappear.
Stephen Martino is a teacher at heart, who humbly avoids the title of instructor. Beginning as a percussionist and honing his “chops”, he majored in music and is an inspiration to so many. As a keyboard player and drummer, he continues to write music and explore the possibilities.
I learned so much from my good friend in this episode as together we inspect the building blocks gifted by his parents to an eager son who opened the door to music.
I started the Long Island Sound Podcast to lend my hand to musicians and singer/songwriters from Long Island. Little did I know that I would discover so much and help guests recall the memories that influenced their journey. We listen to podcasts for entertainment and an occasional lesson.
In today’s class, I revisit some memories from a person who teaches, encourages, and inspires me.
We learned about the encouragement Steve received throughout his life and his generosity to pay it forward.
Steve and his wife Anne Marie, who now reside in Wilmington, NC enjoy time away from Long Island taxes and traffic, but his roots on Long Island run deep along with the influence he has had in the Village of Babylon. He is an accomplished musician who is generous with his time and talent. If you’d like to connect with Steve, go to the GigDestiny.com site for more information.

Guitarist, multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire. Tom Pryor the music director for Community Church in Babylon, NY takes us on his musical journey and influences from classical to jazz, from Rock-n-Roll to Christian Worship music. In this episode, we hear a beautiful tune written for his wife called "Everyday Valentine" and end with an upbeat rock'n version of an original worship song. We explore the music which is the foundation of the "Church for People or aren't Church People".
They say there are only six degrees of separation between all of us, in the case of getting to know Tom, we found just two degrees, as we discovered a mutual friend in Eric McCormack, another guest musician featured in episode #4.
Tom along with Lou Pizichillo is the young pastor of Community Church in Babylon, a non-denominational Christian church unlike any with which your host is acquainted. We unpack the intricacies of a Christian worship group along with the influences that support the message series at each Sunday service. I discovered Tom Pryor when I started attending Community Church just a mile away from my home in Babylon Village. As a "cradle Catholic", I was fortunate enough to experience a welcoming community that just so happened to have fantastic music, along with messages and sermons to aid in my spiritual growth.
Music can be a spiritual experience for many of us, for the performers as well as their audiences. Whether in a bar, pub, concert hall, or in your community church, all of these venues are the wellsprings that feed "The Long Island Sound".

Steve has a conversation with an old high school friend and explores his art and process.
Kevin McLeod is a guitarist who crosses genres with ease from jazz, to rock, folk, the blues, and back again. Kevin is one of those artists who has a standing both in New York City and Long Island. Kevin's music speaks to social justice issues as well as the pain of addiction, the scourge of homelessness as well as the joy of love and life.
About Kevin McLeod
Https://KevinMcLeodBand.com
Music has extraordinary transformative power, both for the musician and listener. It's what I'm always trying to tap into, regardless of the musical style or setting.
Once upon a time music was an important part of a culture. Songs were sung for joy and celebration, to ease the pain of life’s troubles, and to transcend the boundaries between worlds. It is this lineage that inspires me to create.
Kevin's most recent CD is called 'Careless Truth', which contains nine new songs. This is not pop music. The songs on Careless Truth come from the deeper traditions of American Music that inspire him - Blues, Jazz, Folk, and Rock influences are all present. The lyrics and music were written as directly as possible, hence the album’s title. Some serious issues are addressed like homelessness, politics, depression, and addiction, as well as brighter topics like love and family life. The album was recorded using many vintage guitars and amps and has a classic American Rock sound. Kevin was happy to work with some fine musicians and record at an excellent studio.
The Kevin McLeod Band is a six-piece group that takes my songs to the next level via inspired performances and group improvisation. The band features some of the area's finest musicians. I am also a member of the NYC Jazz group True To Life and LI Jazz group The Tone Healers. I have appeared on cable TV programs such as Wes Houston Presents and played at NYC clubs such as The Way Station, The Shrine, The Sidewalk, Silvana, Googie's Lounge (Upstairs at The Living Room), CBGB's, The Alphabet Lounge, and Kavehaz. He has played for many festivals & folk music societies in addition to many cafes, clubs, & restaurants in the NY area and along the east coast. My music has been played on NY radio stations such as WBAB, WFUV, and WUSB, as well as other stations across the USA, Europe, and Australia.
In addition to his own CDs, you can hear his guitar playing on releases by The Kathy Fleischmann Band, Kathy Fleischmann, Geoffrey Armes, The EVT Band, DeStefano & McLeod, Tom FitzPatrick, and Phil DeStefano.

If you love live music, if you struggle to learn an instrument, if you picture yourself as an artist, this podcast is for you. I love spending time with musicians and singers. They’re a fun group, wacky, quirky, emotional, and real. I envy their dedication to their craft and art. I like you, venture to understand their process, and their unending journey to “heal the world” through our universal language, the language of music!
