Our brains are really good at being judgy and so many people who state a desire find that their brain has a lot of judgments about what they want.
"You're so selfish."
"You can't do that."
"Your priorities aren't right."
"You're so greedy."
Listen to this episode to find out why our brains do this and how to override our judgemental self.

So many of us take our most precious feelings about ourselves and place them in the hands of the least capable person we know. The person who struggles managing their own feelings. The person who doesn't have our best interests at heart. But then we get angry with them when they hurt us. This episode explores the concept of 'hiding behind gratitude' and its implications on personal growth and relationships. I delve into the danger of using gratitude as a means to avoid addressing real issues, utilizing a metaphor of a hole in the roof to illustrate how neglecting problems, while being superficially grateful, can be detrimental. I share examples from marital conflicts to demonstrate how deflecting issues with gratitude can invalidate feelings and hinder resolution. I also emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and working through problems, even while maintaining gratitude, to foster healthier relationships and personal well-being.

Trust me when I tell you there is a difference between taking care of someone and caring for someone, especially in a marriage. "Taking care of" implies managing someone. "Caring for" implies loving and cherishing someone. If you want a more intimate, healthy, strong marriage, it's good to get clear on which you do more of; "taking care of" or "caring for".

It's not bad to enjoy the validation other people give us but at some point we have to learn to start validating ourselves. This can be hard, uncomfortable work. So, instead of doing the work of learning to self-validate, more often than not, we double down on seeking outside validation instead. That's when we get greedy. On this episode I talk about validation greed, how most of us get caught in it, and why we may want to cut it out.

As I sat down to set some goals this year a strange thing happened. I had no idea what goals I wanted to set. My desire to set a goal was gone and I felt totally thrown off. I took my struggle to my life coach who helped me realize I was trying to set goals to prove I was worthy of self-love. I knew I no longer wanted to set goals to prove my worth so I decided to focus on choosing something to create this year. In so doing I knew my "goals" would naturally come.

When we avoid making any decision at all, our brain keeps nagging at us to make a decision. That takes energy from us but we have nothing to show for it. We are then in energy debt, or decision debt.
When we have to make a lot of decisions we can become tired of making decisions. This is called decision fatigue. Decision fatigue can make us resist making more decisions which puts us back into decisions debt. Trust me, this all makes sense. Listen to find out what I mean.

Seeking first to understand is not the same as other listening skills taught in therapy so listen in today to find out what I mean and to learn how to do it well.

From the time we are babies we are always seeking for outside validation. The hope though, is that as we grow up and mature, we will seek less outside validation and more self-validation. But nobody teaches us exactly how to do that and so we often find ourselves still wanting validation from others as we ageBut people around us aren't great at validating us all the time and so we can start to put pressure on them to give us the validation we want. And that's where things start to go badly. Listen in to find out more.

Self-confrontation is when you look within yourself and examine your own attitudes and behaviours to see where you have shortcomings so that you can make needed changes. It’s about taking an honest look at yourself and finding your own flaws so you can correct them.
This isn't easy work to do.
But it's powerful work that will change your relationship with yourself and your relationship with others.

We all have felt regret before - that feeling of sadness or disappointment over something that has happened or that we've done. It's not a positive emotion but it can be used to teach us lessons - often the lesson of how we will do it differently next time. But what happens when instead of taking the lesson and moving on, we hold onto the regret? Then it becomes a tormentor as we are filled with shame and judgment about ourselves.

On this episode of the podcast I talk about:
- why we hold onto regret.
- how to make regret a teacher instead of a tormentor.
- why regret is a choice (and one you don't have to choose).
- how regret gets in the way of desire.

Some of the suffering we choose is actually meaningful because it gets us closer to what we really want in our life. - we focus on worst case scenario.
- we think that things are going to be hard.
On this episode I dive into each of the ways we add unnecessary suffering into our lives and give you some tools to help you stop.

The problem is, when you stay confused you also never get to create the opportunities and the life that you really want.

Newton's Third Law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In other words, there is opposition in all things. Even within ourselves. For example, perhaps you choose not to exercise today. Your brain starts to tell you how lazy you are and how inconsistent you are. The next day you exercise. This time your brain tells you that exercise hurts too much and is too hard. No matter what you do, your brain is going to offer you opposition to it.

Listen for more examples of ways this opposition may show up in your life. On this episode I teach you to expect it and I teach you how to handle it.

Human’s want to feel good all the time. We like dopamine. So, when we are faced with a negative emotion our instinct is to get away from it and one way we do this is by buffering.
Buffering is when we use something outside of us to decrease the negative emotion we are feeling inside. But this isn't really a good idea because when we buffer we use a false pleasure to distract us from our negative emotion. But that negative emotion doesn't really go away. We just become less aware of it for a time. Once the false pleasure from the buffer wears off, we often feel more negative than we did before.
On this episode I teach you:- why you may be buffering.
- common buffers (some may surprise you).
- how to choose real pleasure over false pleasure.
- and why you want to stop buffering.

Many of us find ourselves in situations that feel really uncomfortable and painful for a variety of reasons.  We can find ourselves feeling stuck in this pain because we can't see a way out. But the reason we often can't see a solution is because we are looking for a way out that isn’t painful. We want a solution to our problem that is easy and comfortable and good for everyone and feels amazing. But this is not always possible. Sometimes the solution to our problem is also painful and that can be the best thing to understand because then we stop trying to find a painless solution. We actually start looking for the best solution and accept that it may still be painful.

Desire on the other hand is more expansive and novel. It is yearning and passion. Love wants to belong. Desire wants autonomy.

Esther Perel says, “From the moment we are born, we straddle two sets of contradicting needs: the need for security and the need for freedom.”

And we experience this in our marriages as well. We want to belong and we want to be free.

Have you ever stopped to consider the difference between using judgment and being judgemental? I think it's a pretty important distinction. I think too often we are so worried about being seen as judgmental that we stop using judgment. Judgment is focused on you and asks questions such as, "What is good for me? What do I want to do when I look at all the options before me? What opinion do I want to have?" Whereas, being judgemental is focused on others  and asking questions such as, "Why would they do that?" And making statements like, "They are doing that all wrong."
Listen to this episode to find out:
- why we judge and why we should keep doing it.
- why disagreeing with someone does not always mean you are judgmental.
