In this episode I'm going to talk about hybrid meetings and hybrid working.

For nearly two years we haven’t really been back to the office. Now that people are starting to go back, what they find seems like the dark ages. Their meeting rooms, if they even have any communications capability at all, are only equipped with rudimentary audio-conferencing equipment. Often with only a speakerphone. While working from home employees had a great meeting experience, and that’s what they are expecting back in the office. Employees are expecting hybrid meetings to be as good as they have on their laptops while sitting on the sofa in their living room.

In this episode, I talk about infrastructure redesign for a modern digital workplace. You're probably familiar with VPN connections into a "secure" corporate network and having lots of on-premise servers providing your IT services. Well I'm going to throw all that out of the window, you don't need it and it's holding your organisation back. Through this episode I tell you how you can flatten your network infrastructure, embrace a zero trust architecture that allows you to keep it all secure and save big when it comes to your budget.

In this episode I talk about hardware choices, and how you can make the right ones for your users and organisation. Sometimes the right choice is obvious, but often it’s a real dilemma. I’m not just talking about end-user devices though, hardware of varying types is found in different forms all across organisations and as you build your digital workplace strategy you’ll have to make decisions about all manner of equipment.

Personas are not new, they’re not digital either. So why am I talking about them today? Well, they’re an extremely useful tool to have in your toolbox as you try to enable your organisation become digital. Digital ways of working are not a one size fits all approach, so you need to identify the cohorts of users in your organisation who have roughly the same needs. For example, a remote worker will have different needs to a warehouse operative.

In this episode, I’m going to explain how you can identify the different personas in your organisation, develop their persona profiles, identify their personal pain points and build a digital strategy to make their job easier, more productive and less stressful for them.

There are many change management methodologies. Ranging from next to no change management at all, to structured formal systems such as Prosci ADKAR®.

I’m known for a no-nonsense approach to just about everything I do, probably stemming from my LEAN background and the desire to drive out waste anywhere I see it. However, when it comes to change management you really do need to think about it in the context of your organisation.

In this episode, I’m going to talk about the essential elements you need to consider when implementing change as your organisation becomes digital.

The term digital transformation has been grossly overused over the last few years, it’s much simpler than some would have you believe and so I’ve simplified its name to “becoming digital”. In this episode, I’m going to talk about what it means to “become digital”, where you start and some of the decisions you’ll be taking along the way.

In this episode I’m going to introduce what the digital workplace is, what this podcast is here to give you, outline the format of the podcast and tell you who I am.

I’m not one to beat around the bush, so let’s cut to the chase. The digital workplace or modern workplace is not one thing and it’s not the same for everyone either. I mean that in the sense that for every individual the digital workplace is unique to them. An organisation may have a common set of tools in their toolbox, but one person may use a ring spanner where another uses a pipe wrench. They both deliver the same outcome, are compatible to an extent and are not difficult to understand. The set of tools used by each individual will differ depending on what they do, but the people can be grouped into cohorts who use similar sets of tools. We call those personas and I’ll do a deep dive into personas in episode 3.

One thing common to all interpretations of the digital workplace is that it enables people to communicate, collaborate and work from anywhere on any device. You can apply it equally to the digital nomad, who’s travelling the world on a bicycle, with dynamo or solar power and a tablet device connected to the Internet via a satellite link, or to an accounts clerk who powers on their desktop pc at 08:45 every morning in their cubicle, after a tedious 30min commute and a few minutes chatting to colleagues as they make their morning coffee.

Their equipment will differ, their software will differ, but they could both do exactly the same job. In fact, they could be co-authoring a document at exactly the same time while chatting on a video call. That is what the digital workplace delivers, and I know. I’ve been the digital nomad and I’ve been the office-based worker (though not an accounts clerk).

That’s the digital workplace. So why should you listen to this podcast? I’ve created this podcast to help you understand what the digital workplace is, what the benefits are and how you build a digital workplace strategy that works for you, your colleagues and your organisation. Each episode will do a deep dive into a topic, give you the latest rundown on what Microsoft and Google and others are releasing to the market and answer listener questions.

So if you have a question about the digital workplace or digital workplace technologies, head on over to digitalworkplacepodcast.com and use the Speakpipe to leave me a 90sec voice message. I will answer every query, but if it fits well with the show schedule I’ll answer the question in the podcast.

I can almost hear you thinking, so who are you and what makes you think you are an expert on the digital workplace.

An expert is “someone who is very knowledgeable about or skilful in a particular area”. One definition I read is that an expert has 10,000 hours of experience in a particular field of study.

I have 30 years of experience advising on and delivering digital workplace technologies and modern ways of working to businesses as small as one employee to multinational aerospace giants with 200,000 employees, to healthcare organisations with 2,000,000 employees. I’ve helped businesses in fintech, automotive, f1, aerospace, manufacturing, HVAC, event management, recruitment and more. I designed and developed my first cloud-based SaaS solution back in 1994, and I’ve led globally diverse teams with members covering 16 time zones and 5 continents. Conservatively I have around 35,000 hours of experience in the digital workplace. You might find I know stuff.
