Listen to my chat with my business coach Kate Gibbs about what it means to honor your own energy and seasonality of life when it comes to business ownership and entrepreneurial life. We talk about how ditching hustle culture and taking on an entirely new perspective when it comes to the work-life balance can be just the thing you need to root down and bloom in your business and life. I know so many of you are balancing motherhood with small business ownership and I thought it would be so encouraging to hear from Kate on how to feel more confident managing that balance.

Postpartum is such a significant time of change, adaptation, and bonding. It can also be a stressful, sleepless, and emotional time. I encourage you, if you're pregnant or hope to be, spend some time thinking through what you want the first 8 weeks postpartum to look like. If you're already postpartum, I would also encourage you to prioritize rest moving forward. And if you're beyond postpartum, consider how you might encourage or provide care/meals/rest for a new mom that you know. 💕

On this episode, I chat with Laura Nance about what type of support and education is best if you're going through the motherhood transition and her experience as a doula trainer for the last 20 plus years

For moms:

  • Haakaa Silicone Milk Catcher
  • Lindsay Hookway
  • Book: Rest, Play, Grow by Dr. Deborah MacNamara
  • Legendairy Milk Products
  • Angela Das: Motherhood Untamed

For professionals:

  • Laura’s Website for doula & new parent educator training

Laura’s #1 Tip:

“For clients, for families that are pregnant or having babies, my one piece of advice is dig deep and listen to your intuition, trust yourself, and then also really trust your baby. It's a relationship that's going to last, forever. So start that relationship really, really young where you have this relationship of trust between the two of you. And it pays often and is pretty cool when you can have older kids that still trust you. So start at a young age.”

“For professionals, I would just say be yourself as an educator or a doula and don't be afraid to really jump in there and do it. If you have a passion for it, jump in and do it, but then do it as yourself. A lot of times when I train people, a lot of times people become a doula because they had a doula, and they love their doula, but then they kind of try to be their doula. Follow your passions and be yourself as a doula or an educator because people are going to be attracted to you for you. But if you're trying to put on somebody else, you're gonna struggle with that because you're not going to be as natural with people are going to pick up on that.”

On today's podcast. I chat with Dr. Sinead Dufour about her work surrounding pregnancy related, pelvic girdle pain. And if that sounds complex, don't worry. All it means is pain in your pelvis during pregnancy or into the first year postpartum. We talk about the myth that relaxin is the cause of all of these pains in your pelvis and how we can better approach pain in general during pregnancy. So whether you're a clinician or currently pregnant and wanting to improve your pain. I know, you'll find this episode intriguing

Resources Mentioned

  • APTA Pelvic Health Academy Clinical Practice Guidelines
  • Pelvic Guru’s Pelvic Practitioner Directory
  • Research Article and Associated Infographic linked here.

Sinéad’s #1 Tip:

“I want people to know that pregnancy related kind of aches and pains is very different than pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain. So it's important that people kind of understand that outta the gate. So that way if you self-identify yourself in this now umbrella of pregnancy related pelvic girdle pain, now where this, in this nociplastic pain, you can immediately understand you need to go to someone to get some guidance and some help. Ideally, someone who has some understanding and pain science. It doesn't even matter if they don't even live in your same country because most of this care can be delivered really well virtually. Sometimes you'll only need one or two consultations with a skilled person to be able to kind of figure things out and get on track.”

Amy Bushatz is the host and producer of the Humans Outside podcast, a journalist and an editor specializing in coverage of Alaska outdoors and the U.S. military. When her husband, Luke, left the active-duty Army in 2016, the family moved sight-unseen to Alaska where they have built a lifestyle around daily spending time outside. Amy enjoys ultra running across her local mountains and plotting new adventures in nature.

My top takeaway from this episode was how impactful a time management strategy can be for improving your chances of spending time outside. This can allow you to be intentional about scheduling outside time and then all the benefits that come with it act as a catalyst for improving your inside life as well!

What Amy wants everyone to know: Heading outside for just 20 minutes a day really has a whole-life impact.

On today’s podcast, I chat with Abbie Ogilbee, a pediatric physical therapist about what pt can look like from both the therapist and parent perspectives.

I loved hearing Abbie’s balanced perspective on pediatric physical therapy. Hopefully you learned as much as I did from this episode. My top takeaway:

  • You know, your child best and pediatric PT can be that little boost your child needs in their development, but isn't an indicator of how you're doing as a parent. Don't wait if you're seeing things you're concerned about - but instead, trust your gut and find a qualified professional

I hope you enjoy this conversation with Kayla! She's a wealth of knowledge and provides an expert perspective as well as a practical and parent perspective. She shares my love of anatomy, and has a passion for sharing her knowledge of orofacial myofunctional disorders and improving speech, sleep, and other tongue-tie related symptoms!

My top takeaways from this episode are:

1) Not every provider knows what to look for or how to appropriately diagnose a tie. It's important to trust your gut and seek out providers with more education surrounding this topic.

2) The prehab and the post-op therapy is crucial for giving your child the best chance at improving their feeding, swallowing talking, and even sleeping!

It’s always lovely to chat with Dominika about health, women’s wellness, childbirth, and postpartum healing. She has lived it, and she has a passion for improving maternal healing after people have their babies.

Just a note on this episode of the podcast, we had some technical difficulties and ended up with a lower quality backup of the audio. It’s a high quality conversation, but there are some delays/glitches that were not able to be edited out. Thanks for listening as I learn how to do this well!

My top takeaways from this episode:

1: Practice setting healthy boundaries during pregnancy. This will set you up for success in the postpartum!

2: Educate yourself and surround yourself with resources and people who will support you for the postpartum period. Learn what you need to know ahead of time so that you don't go into the newborn stage blind, hire a postpartum doula, put that on your registry! Expect things to be slow for the first little bit.

Join us for a chat about breastfeeding, gathering your support team, what to expect early in postpartum, pumps, and more. Carrie and Sarah do not hold back! And they have their own upcoming podcast, the Boob Half Full Podcast. These ladies are so fun and incredibly informative.

My top takeaway: Build your support system early! Find a lactation professional in your area while you’re still pregnant so you have someone to call when you’re in the thick of it.
