Fortune Cookie Prophet Podcast: Recent Episodes

Gene Curl

Welcome to the Fortune Cookie Prophet Podcast, hosted by his holiness himself, the fortune cookie prophet, Gene Curl. This is a show that discusses religious scriptures, doctrines and other religious topics from a skeptical point of view. I came up with the name for the podcast after watching the horror movie, Fortune Cookie Prophecies and thinking about the premise behind the movie, which led me to ponder the fact that a lot of religious leaders come up with nebulous sounding prophecies or predictions that are about as accurate as a message from a fortune cookie, and about as meaningful to real life; you know, just specific enough to sound like they apply to a situation, but vague enough to be difficult too disprove.

Young Mormon Men are often told that a mission is the best two years of their life, but mine was certainly not, and in fact, it was hell. My mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was partially responsible for my leaving the Church and loosing my faith in God.

Today I will be talking about Jack Chick and his eponymously named tracts. This episode will focus mostly on one of the worst and most vile of the tracts, "Lisa" which is the story of a horrible couple who are sexually abusing their daughter but are forgiven by Jesus after reciting a magic spell (the sinners prayer) and it is as if they never did it and they will go to heaven. Of course, no thought is given to the lifelong trauma and depression the victim will endure because the parent's found Jesus, hallelujah!

In this episode I will be going through the first part of the book of Leviticus in the Bible to determine if the god of the Old Testament, based on his actions in the text, is a good god and a god worth worshipping if he were real. So far it isn't looking good for god and, as we learn in Leviticus, god is prideful, vengeful, sexist and loves his people to suffer by burning up all of their best stuff because he loves the way it smells.

In this episode I go over a talk by President Brigham Young in which he talks about the duty of the saints and how they should not have any fun until they have done everything they need to do, and at one point in the talk he mentioned about how men would submit applications for a wife. WTF? Brigham young decided who got married to who?

In this episode I review what was once one of my favorite films, The Testaments of One Fold and One Shepard, which is basically just a Mormon propaganda film. In the Journal of Discourses, Brigham Young said a bunch of racist things about Native Americans and talked about how petty theft should be dealt with by murdering the thief.

In this episode I talk about hate pastor Greg Locke and how he is unhinged, running around the stage and yelling about witches in the congregation. In my reading from the Journal of Discourses read about and discuss how Howard Egan murdered James Monroe for sleeping with his wife and did so with the blessing of the Mormon Church and was acquitted for the crime by the court, not because they thought he did not commit the murder, but because they thought it was a justified homicide.

I was recently told by a friend that I was "a little jaded" and that I should not be and had no right to be. At first I thought that perhaps they were correct, then I reflected upon my life and decided unequivocally that I am more than justified at feeling jaded after all that I have had to endure in my life, most of which was caused by religion.

In this edition of the series determining whether of not the God of the Bible could be considered a good god we learn that god hates it when you pull out, but he is seemingly ok with rape and murder and visiting prostitutes so long as it is his chosen men doing it.

This week I am taking a little break from the Journal of Discourses and discussing, based entirely on what it says in the Bible, if the God of the Bible could be considered a good god worth worshipping or not. I only read half way through Genesis and so far it isn't making a good case for God being a good god.

In this episode Parley P. Pratt talks about how much he loathes apostates and even laid out some veiled threats against them. It is because of talks like this that LDS parents kick their children out of the house when they do anything against the Church.

George A.  Smith claimed the saints were being unfairly treated for being forced to follow the laws of the United States of America like everyone else.
Brigham Young laid out the law as to how members were to treat apostates and those who speak out against the Church, and it was not kind. At one point in the talk Young even insinuated the faithful members should enact violence against apostates.

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland urged BYU to take the scriptures in one hand and a musket in the other in support of traditional marriage, or in other words, to use religion and the threat of violence to stop same sex marriage. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUEBJ3NdaCs&t=6s

Brigham Young condemns people for not trusting the Church with their money, despite how Joseph Smith in the past had poorly managed money. Of course, Young blames the people and not Smith. In short, Brigham young wanted the people to give their money, shut up and do as they were told.

Brigham Young, 2nd prophet and president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormonism) taught that if children go astray it is entirely the fault of the mother. Young also taught that if children go astray they should be cast out and shunned. Orson Hyde implied that those who are critical of the Church should be killed.

Orson Pratt, one of the original apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon Church) said in a talk, recorded in the Journal of Discourses, that polygamy is a God instituted practice and polygamist can become gods. Pratt also taught that the more righteous people in the pre existence are born white,  and the truly good are born to white polygamous Mormon families.

Brigham Young said of Adam, "He is our father and our god, and the only god with whom we have to do." Brigham Young also taught that Adam is the literal father of Jesus Christ and fathered Jesus in the same manner as any man fathers children.

When I was in my late teens I joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormon) and in my early twenties I served a mission for the church. Before a church mission, everyone must go through the temple. This is my experience going through the temple for the first time. It was a strange experience to say the least.

Brigham Young is extremely prideful and claims he is the smartest person on earth, and he basically worships Joseph Smith. George Smith ignores the fact that polygamy was the root of most of their issues with the US government and pretends they were just being persecuted for their religion.

A while back I talked to a pastor friend and he loaned me the book by Timothy Keller, Making Sense of God, thinking it would make be believe in God, but it did not and in this episode I will point out some of the major flaws with the arguments made in the book. There is no Journal of Discourse reading in this episode, but will resume next week.

In this episode I talk about why our religious relatives try so hard to get us back in church and why we should not be too upset about it.  Your parents did not know, and still don't know, they taught you a lie and they are worried about your eternal happiness, even if it means you are entirely unhappy now.  It is also OK to set up healthy boundaries. At the end I read a talk from The Journal of Discourses by John Taylor.

In this episode I discuss a little about why the death of Jesus makes no sense and then I will discuss the issues with the talk by Parley P. Pratt on the eternity of the soul. Apparently, Parley P. Pratt thought electricity was a fluid, and say a spirit is like a fluid as well.

This first episode will mostly be an explanation of the origins of the name and idea the behind the podcast, the goal of the podcast, as well as a little about myself. I will start with the  podcast.
