The Teacher’s Mirror is a podcast brought to you by the Licenciatura in Bilingualism with emphasis on English Language from the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, in the city of Pereira, Colombia. Every week, we will share reflections, thoughts, perceptions and experiences of pre-service and in-service teachers based on what they live in their teaching practicum in public schools of Colombia. In this episode, we will be talking about the degree of articulation between language policies and the teaching practicum. Language policies determine the parameters for teaching, learning and using languages in a country. In Colombia, public schools follow the guidelines of the Suggested Curriculum for Teaching Languages and the Basic Learning Rights for English Learning. These guidelines derive from the national project Colombia Bilingüe. Two practitioners will tell us about their experience dealing with the implementation of these policies in public schools. In Colombian public schools, it is very common that a number of cultural, institutional, national, academic, or leisure activities are programmed and executed along the school year. To what extent do these activities affect the regular teaching practicum of pre-service teachers? What can be done? Do these activities contribute to students’ holistic development or are they just a barrier for the continuum of a normal learning process, particularly in the development of skills in another language?
