Jack’s Mum: an American mother in England: Recent Episodes

Suzanne Schultz Pick

Hi, I’m Jack’s Mum. About ten years ago I moved from Florida to North East England. A year ago, at the age of 43, my husband and I had our first child. Then 2020 happened. This podcast is for mothers like me out there who are just trying out motherhood for the first time while the world is going crazy around them. Summer term is here and lots of kids are out of school. Not all toddlers have their nursery open through the whole month of August, so take advantage of some activities available for kids in your local area.

As I mention, the National Lotto Days Out is a great incentive to get kids into museums or venues where they can explore and be out of the house for a while.

Also, Kids Pass has discounted cinema tickets as well as discounts on local activities and events as well.

We're doing our best to get on with a normal way of life. We took Jack to Lightwater Valley this month for his first roller coaster ride.

Freedom Day was Monday the 19th of July. What does that mean for parents? We're still self-isolating and having lots of cases in the U.K., so how do we as parents handle the situation? Do we keep on wearing masks and social distancing, do we stop taking kids to activities altogether, or do we just go with the flow and accept that the pandemic is on its way out?

So much going on these days! It's been a week of illness and trying to get back into classes and nursery.

(Apologies for sounding a bit stressed on this one -- I am!)

Sending a child to nursery is tough, but it's even more difficult with National Lockdown and government guidelines.

If you'd like to research any nurseries for your child, I suggest finding them on Facebook and looking at the reviews as well as finding them on the following sites:

My baby ate some toast and a green bean today? Weaning a toddler after going through the breastfeeding/bottle feeding dance is tough.

Also, many Americans won't know what a Health Visitor is: she is a midwife who is trained in community public health. They come to your house and check on the children at home.

Here's more information: What is a Health Visitor?

To sleep? That is the question. Everyone who has a baby knows how important sleep and the lack thereof may be on parents.
