In 2010, my grandmother passed away after a stroke. Then a heart wrenching experience in 2012 of losing my oldest child.I became a financial planner in 2003 during the process of helping my parents in their declining health. In 2011, three years after my parents passed, I became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ to better help families in need. In 2021, I became a Certified Financial Transitionist® to complete my personal and professional experience with formal education and scientific theory. Understanding the Breach: A Personal Account

In today's digital age, the amount of personal information that's vulnerable to breaches is overwhelming. I recently experienced a security breach that laid bare the fragility of our digital footprints. These individuals, whoever they were, managed to acquire sensitive information about my wife and me. They had everything—our social security numbers, driver's license numbers, addresses, birthdays, and possibly more data we haven't even discovered yet.

Navigating the Unfamiliar Terrain of Identity Recovery

The ordeal of reclaiming our identities was far from a straightforward process. It introduced us to a world we never thought we'd have to navigate. The path to resolution was fraught with frustration and learning. On a personal level, the task became a huge learning curve that required around eight to ten painstaking hours to reach a semblance of normalcy. Despite the time commitment, and the stress, the battle to rectify the situation was one worth fighting.

Lessons Learned and Moving Forward

Going through such an experience leaves you changed. It teaches the importance of vigilance, reinforces the value of trust, and reminds you not to take your personal security for granted. The road to recovery from a security breach isn't just about fixing mistakes—it's about guarding against them happening again. Today I had an awe-inspiring conversation with college student, Adam Delisle. Adam lost his father at the age of sixteen. He also witnessed his mother and family picking up the pieces during his formative years. The financial impact made a lasting impression on Adam.

Adam approached me due to the unique nature of my firm. He is very outgoing and had the courage to reach out and ask questions to push himself forward.

Maddox's parlay into the the US Naval Academy is no easy feat. The US Naval Academy has an acceptance rate of 8%. Not great odds, but Maddox got in with great grades, great test scores and great parents.

Luka came to me about a year ago and asked why I have not interviewed any young folks on the podcast about their questions about finance. Well, I decided to bring his question to life. In this week's episode, I share some listener feedback. I was simply wowed at the folks who reached out to me to share their trauma experiences. I was equally amazed how certain therapies, including EMDR really helped them.

Some of the listeners I spoke to talked about the gravity of their trauma such as: abuse, molestation, death, addiction, racial trauma and many other forms of trauma. I took solace in the fact that my experience and willingness to share about my trauma normalized experience for others.

As this is a financial podcast, I would like to bring the aspect of finance full circle. A certification I obtained (Certified Financial Transitionist®-CeFT®) a few years ago has really allowed me to hone my personal and professional experience for that of my clients. In case you are not familiar with CeFT®. A Certified Financial Transitionist® is trained to help clients through major life events and the financial transitions that accompany them. Basically, I am trained to incorporate the emotional side of money with the technical side and guide clients accordingly. Often times emotions conflict with very literal functions of money.

In today's episode I want to talk about trauma therapy. Specifically, one that I have experienced called EMDR. EMDR is short for Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing.

Let me describe EMDR in layman’s terms. Imagine walking past a grassy area and have no emotional response. Imagine, I walk by that same grassy area and my heart begins to race, I get anxious, I start to get very nervous, my mind starts racing and I start sweating. To further extend this example - imagine I was traumatized in a grassy area, assaulted, overt act of racism, accident, act of war, catastrophe, death, etc. Now you can begin to understand why I (anyone) would be triggered by walking by a grassy area.

The effects of trauma evoke an uncontrolled emotional response unless there is a system in which to process those memories safely, with an outside perspective and desensitized.

I am not a therapist and cannot recommend any type of therapy. I can tell you about my experience and how I have been enriched. I can tell you that seeking a professional helps for any traumatic life experience.

Welcome back to Real Talk with Life After Grief Chris. We have made it to Season 6 with a tremendous amount of support.

This season is all about Trauma.

On the heels of releasing a lot of information at the tail end of Season 5, I thought a natural extension would be a deep dive into trauma.

As trauma can very emotional and triggering, I am going to be very thoughtful as to any potential guests as I do not want to place on unfair burden on their journey.

I will share my own experiences and speak in generalities relating to the experience of others.

My hope is that I lay a path for folks experiencing trauma to get the support they need.

As always, I will relate these experiences back to finance.

Greetings and welcome to episode 4 of Season 6-Racism and Discrimination

I decided to reboot a previous episode on the subject. As I have gotten older, and maybe wiser, I understand the traumatic effects of dealing with years of unsolicited biases due to the color of my skin.

In this episode, I describe some horrible experiences I have had with racism and discrimination. These experiences have been both emotional and physically exhausting. The trauma is constant as situations continue to manifest themselves. I also realize my emotions heighten now that my sons have experienced some of the same slights I have faced.

I am gracious to have the right support systems in place to help me through many of these experiences.

As this is a podcast with a foundation of finance, I will also talk about the financial impacts of racism and discrimination.

Allow me to Re-Introduce myself.....

I have been leading up to some very traumatic stuff that has happened in life. I thought that I should lead up to the next podcast (where I fully disclose) with my initial introduction before I could no longer hide what transpired.

Below is what I used to introduce myself on my inaugural podcast.

I am both a financial planner to clients and consultant to other financial planners. I help clients and advisors navigate grief by providing deep insight into what grief is and how to navigate financial matters after the death of a loved one.

In 2008, at the peak of the recession, I lost my mother to cancer in August and my father to a broken heart in November. In 2010, my grandmother passed away after a stroke. Then a heart wrenching experience in 2012 of losing my oldest child.

I became a financial planner in 2003 during the process of helping my parents in their declining health. In 2011, three years after my parents passed, I became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ to better help families in need. Shortly after starting my own financial planning firm, Life After Grief Financial Planning® I was compelled to start Life After Grief Consulting®. Through my consulting practice I teach advisors how to navigate client grief to help them move through financial and emotional grief without damaging their professional relationships. In 2021, I became a Certified Financial Transitionist® to complete my personal and professional experience with formal education and scientific theory.

My personal experiences and knowledge of grief and loss of loved ones helps me to understand and assist families enduring similar situations. I’ve helped over 400 families navigate many financial issues and life circumstances such as grieving loss of loved ones.

In this episode we explore Brain Fog. Simply stated, Brain Fog is the brain's way of protecting itself.

Brain Fog clouds memory function during times of grief, trauma or extreme stress. Specifically, concentration and mental acuity are affected.

I noted having a hard time juggling normal tasks without feeling overwhelmed. I also seemed to forget things with regularity until the brain fog passed.

In my travels and seeking guidance from professionals, I have come across a very good tool which helped me navigate through the brain fog much quicker. The tool is called the Self Care Wheel. During times of grief and trauma many people forget or lose sight of the things that keep them fully functional like sleep, exercise, going to church, hanging out with friends/family, meditation, etc. The Self Care Wheel is a simple reminder of things that keep you grounded and functioning normally. As we begin Season 5 with a bang, I have encountered so many strong, enduring and growth minded folks. In this episode, I speak about Resilience. The power of resilience can be inherited and/or acquired. In my case, I gained resilience through a combination of both. Throughout this season, you will hear me bring up the concept of Super Survivor. I was fortunate to be introduced both the idea and some pretty dynamic Super Survivors. Some of the Super Survivor we meet have fought through financial despair to finding joy in life again.

In my research, I learned that I am also a Super Survivor.

In today's episode, I have an awe inspiring guest. Please meet Kathi Balasek, MA. Kathi is an educator, grief literacy communication coach, corporate consultant, university lecturer, speaker, podcast host, and widow advocate. She teaches professionals how to improve their grief literacy communication skills to best serve bereaved clients.

I asked Kathi to be on the podcast, not for her accolades, but for the compassion she brings to others during a major transition of widowhood. Kathi truly has a gift that she has decided to bestow on others. I was very fortunate to have met Kathi as she is very sought after and recognizable for the work she does.

  2. Work on yourself--emotionally, spiritually and physically---create a nurture rich environment through positive people in your life. You have to put the work in to progress through your grief.
  3. Ask for help--surround yourself with great professionals through recommendations from friends and family members who care and love you.

You heard that right!!! Hamsters and Grief. In this episode I speak about the opportunity cost of having a hamster in terms of children bearing the responsibility of caring for a living creature.  

The opportunity cost for my son to learn responsibility the hard way after losing Otis, the hamster, twice was roughly $1000. The experience was priceless. Luckily for us, Otis has 9 lives. 

The USDA estimates the true cost of raising a child in 2022 is between $15,438 and    $17,345. That amount equates to a few great family vacations. In terms of Otis,  he blew through the USDA estimates as he was lost two times. However, the money spent was well worth the life lessons my son learned.

In this week's episode, I talk about a chance encounter in which I was asked to mentor a young boy some 20 plus years ago. This chance encounter forged into a brotherhood. The brotherhood turned into a situation where the young boy turned into a man and would pave the way for his brothers, creating better life circumstances. I am talking about my younger brother, from another mother, Ronald Street.

I was ignorant that I was always being watched as a young man. The faith and values my parents instilled in me were noticed by a college professor. My college professor asked me to mentor a young man without a constant father figure in his life. I had no idea that this chance encounter would allow me to shape a young man to do better for his family.

I was equally as fortunate as Ron because his mother trusted me with her special gift to give and expose him to a new world beyond the confines of a small town. My time with Ron helped me grow and mature as a young man as I constantly knew I was his role model.

Sadly, Ron passed away at the tender age of 31. I have felt a lot of grief in my life, but this was different. I felt an emptiness because I spent so much time and energy helping Ron think beyond his current situation and bettering himself. I did take solace in the fact that Ron did pave the way for his brothers.

Ron possessed a desire to mature and pay life blessings forward. He also demonstrated financial literacy and knowledge of ways to improve his individual life circumstance as a result of our short life together. I am forever grateful to his mother for allowing us to spend unabated time together as well as her complete trust.

In this week's episode I get to showoff an online education program I built several years ago, "The Advisor's Guide to Grieving Clients." I built this program as a self-paced tool for advisors and non-financial types. The idea was born and came to fruition as advisors continuously sought me out for my expertise in working with grieving clients. Grieving clients also encouraged me to teach their advisors how to work with them comfortably.

I had close friends who gave me a hard time for years after I graduated because I never formally used my elementary education degree. Well, now I can say I have used my degree to the fullest extent.

With a lot of help, time and energy, I designed a program in which I am really proud. The program has 10 lessons, stemming from understanding anyone's grieving style, grief triggers, how to speak to someone in grief, stages of grief, support services, family dynamics, timelines and many more tools and tips. Furthermore, the program is approved for continuing education credit for anyone who is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ .

I have also opened up a Facebook Group for anyone who has taken the course in order to create a tight-knit community of folks who want to help others in grief.

Did you know that volunteering is one of the most exhilarating ways to accelerate your progression through grief?

In this week's episode I talk about "Giving Back" as a source of healing for someone in grief.  It sounds like an oxymoron to even think about helping someone else while you deal with your own grief.  Studies have shown that there are definitive health benefits to giving back.   Volunteering is good for the mind and body.  Giving back through volunteering is a meaningful way to honor a loved one.  Volunteering is a way to take your mind off your own grief.  

I also list some examples of the volunteering I have participated in to gain the health benefits while in grief.  Finally, I provide some ways to access volunteering resources to help those processing their own grief.

In this week's episode I talk about Hospice. I talk about the origins and the tremendous benefit enacted by Congress in the 1980s. Many folks are unaware that Hospice organizations offer bereavement services at no cost, even to those who have not utilized Hospice in the formal sense. Hospice specializes in the care of the dying as well as their families. Hospice is not looking to cure a terminal illness, but to make everyone more comfortable during the process.

Hospice is available 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Each family also gets the benefit of a team of specialists who provide the best possible care.  

I also talk about the numerous ways volunteers aid the professional hospice team comprised of medical professionals. The Hospice team is tremendous and more information can be found at Hospice.org. I can't say enough good things about Hospice. I have lived both sides of Hospice. My mother utilized the services of hospice as she was dying and I now give back to the organization through volunteering.

In this week's episode I am going to discuss "Setting Healthy Boundaries", both as someone in grief and an advisor helping a client in grief. I am going to draw on my formal training and education as a hospice volunteer with regard to the area of setting therapeutic boundaries. I am also going to draw on a few personal examples of how I realized my boundaries were becoming violated and how I reacted in the spirit of self preservation.

As an individual in grief you many not be as astute as you once were because you are dealing with a traumatic life-altering transition. Through my use of examples and information, my hope is that you have a baseline of setting healthy therapeutic boundaries.

In this week's episode, I decided to talk about terminal illnesses, including cancer, as it relates to parents delivering the daunting news to children. I use my own personal example of when my folks delivered the news of my mother's cancer diagnosis. I present this information to you from that of a high school senior's perspective. In my research I have discovered that the tools and tips I have garnered apply to just about any aged child.  During the podcast, I will discuss very specific tips on delivering the news, catering to the child and helping form a community of support around that child and family alike. In the winter of 2010, I received some alarming calls that my parents' home was being raided by the police. Consequently, I received this news the day I returned from my paternal grandmother's funeral. I had rented the home to older college students (late 20s with their parents' co-signing on the lease). This was a tough situation and long drawn-out. Although this situation was heart wrenching, it reinforced me to have the right team around me. The team for me at that moment in time was: defense attorney, real estate attorney and deputy sheriff. I use my experience to then educate clients to have the right team around them. In my experience, the right client team is comprised of: financial planner, insurance advisor, estate planning attorney, banker and accountant. I serve as my client's first point of contact and usually introduce my clients to their right team. I also find client team members who may be unique to their situation, such as the one I described above. I also keep in close contact with my client's team, and in some regards hold them accountable. I also use my experience to educate advisors in the value of having the right team in place for themselves and their clients. I recently had an advisor reach out to me requesting a defense attorney for a client. My job is not to be judgmental, but to serve my clients honestly, fairly and with my fiduciary hat.

Have you ever met someone that prevents grief. Well, I have. Let me introduce you to Heidi Burnett. Heidi is the owner and founder of SwimSprout. SwimSprout’s mission is to teach students the necessary skills and confidence to survive an aquatic accident and build a foundation for a lifetime enjoyment of water activities. I was fortunate to meet Heidi a little over 8 years ago when my wife and I were looking for someone to give our sons the necessary skills to survive an aquatic accident. I have heard hundred of stories of swimming accidents where children did not survive as a result of not having valuable survival skills. My wife and I did not want to be a statistic. We were both very fortunate that we learned how to swim at an early age. We have also witnessed the grief that comes with an aquatic accident as a result of an extended family member not surviving such a tragedy.

I usually don’t openly talk about my experience with racism and discrimination because it is emotionally and physically exhausting. My experience with racism also brings up a lot of anxiety and grief. I must warn you, the situations, my reactions and the way I handled each are very raw. Imagine having a full time job in which you are working 40 hours a week. Now, imagine having a second full time job moonlighting in which no one knows or cares. Racism is my second full time job. I will share my personal examples of racism which include Personal, Systematic, Corporate Discrimination and Bystander Effect. I will also provide simple next steps in which we  can all create a better environment with regard racism and discrimination.

Susan led me to a very specific training she created called the Certified Financial Transitionist® (CeFT®). As I have mentionedin a previous podcast, I was searching for a training that would complete my personal and professional experience. As we conclude the first season of Real Talk with Life After Grief, I wanted to bring my brother on as a special guest. As many have known, my brother and I have navigated our own very personal family feud for more than 35 years. Our relationship was a complete and utter disaster for most of those 35 years. The animosity and disfunction in our relationship reached a breaking point after significant deaths in our family. With a lot of communication, acceptance and forgiveness we have repaired  and mended our relationship. My wish is that this podcast gives family members in the same predicament as my brother and I hope that relationships can be completely mended and repaired. If we were able to repair our relationship, I believe that anyone can.

I am both a financial planner to clients and consultant to other financial planners. I help clients and advisors navigate grief by providing deep insight into what grief is and how to navigate financial matters after the death of a loved one.

In 2008, at the peak of the recession, I lost my mother to cancer in August and my father to a broken heart in November. In 2010, my grandmother passed away after a stroke. Then a heart wrenching experience in 2012 of losing my oldest child.

I became a financial planner in 2003 during the process of helping my parents in their declining health. In 2011, three years after my parents passed, I became a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ to better help families in need. Shortly after starting my own financial planning firm, Life After Grief Financial Planning® I was compelled to start Life After Grief Consulting®. Through my consulting practice I teach advisors how to navigate client grief to help them move through financial and emotional grief without damaging their professional relationships. In 2021, I became a Certified Financial Transitionist® to complete my personal and professional experience with formal education and scientific theory.

My personal experiences and knowledge of grief and loss of loved ones helps me to understand and assist families enduring similar situations. I’ve helped over 400 families navigate many financial issues and life circumstances such as grieving loss of loved ones.
