All That Glitters is a weekly podcast hosted by three time Olympian Libby Trickett. Each week she sits down with the worlds best retired athletes and explores their transition from the bright lights of competition to the real world.
Season 11 of AFLW is upon us and to kick things off with a bang (pun intended!) held the first ever AFLW International between Australia and Ireland. We wanted to know what it was like to be a part of history so joining us on the pod this week is one of Australia's most decorated and respected figures in Australian Rules Football, Libby Birch.

You know how much we love a sporting doco. Can't get to them fast enough. And the Scott Miller swimming documentary was no exception. Except, it's taken Libby a couple of weeks to actually talk about it. Miller was a swimming poster boy of the 90s who fell from favour and the public eye after he was arrested and jailed for his involvement in drugs and trafficking. And it's more relatable to than Libby had anticipated.
Deep End: The Scott Miller Story is available now on ABC iView

The FIFA World Cup is on and we have some confessions to make. Georgie's family went on an active holiday that was wonderful and slightly disasterous all at the same time. We experience the critique levelled at women who dare to discuss sport and unpack all our feelings about Rafael Nadal's documentary.

Sharyn Donaghy works with elite athletes on a daily basis and will tell you that a lot of them are missing the foundational skill sets to thrive outside their sport. It's nothing to do with their physical skills or their times. Instead, it's everything to do with the structures, practices and belief in yourself outside of sport - mental health, sleep, career development, financial literacy and social connection.
If you have a teen who plays sport, it's so important to listen to this conversation.
You can follow Sharyn for more great advice on Instagram at Educate to Elevate. We highly recommend it!

83 percent of Australians are concerned about the influence of the manosphere on boys and young men. In 2008, Neil Davis lost his 17 year old son, Sam, to an unprovoked one-punch attack at a party in May 2008. Since then Neil and his wife, Nat Cook, have channelled their profound grief into a mission of prevention. They established the Sammy D Foundation in Adelaide and for over two decades have been working with schools, clubs, coaches, parents and young men. Neil joins us to talk about the role sport can play in helping boys navigate conflict, respect, masculinity, and peer pressure in healthier ways. And given the influence of the manosphere, this sort of conversation has never been more important.

If you're anything like us, when you're watching your child playing a contact sport from the sidelines, concussion is something that you'll have in the back of your mind. To make sure you have all the information you need, this week we're talking to Dr David Hughes - AIS Chief Medical Officer and the Chair of the Australian Olympic Committee Medical Commission. He takes us through it all - head injury vs concussion, the way concussion can happen (it's not just a head hitting something), symptoms, and the evidence around when to play and when to sit it out. We promise you'll learn something - we sure did!

Do you have a child or teen playing sport in your household? Then this series is for you! We know that families are busy, that the school year is racing by, and it's hard to find time to source the experts. So we've brought together some of Australia's brightest minds to talk about the issues that impact sport loving families, and give you some easy tips to help everyone stay playing.
Our first guest is Accredited Practising Dietitian, Advanced Sports Dietitian and founder of The Fuel School, Ali Miles. Ali works with every type of athlete - from the elite winter Olympians (like Scotty James) and Paralympians, to elite netball teams (hello Sunshine Coast Lightning) to teens who play lots of sports to kids just trying to eat a better lunchbox. This is not just a conversation for teens on performance pathways - if you have a teen or child who has a lunchbox or fights with you about breakfast (surely it's not just us?), you need to tune in.

Do you know the story of how parkrun ended up in Australia? Or that dogs used to be registered to run? Or that Australia has made it our own? Neither did we until we caught up with parkrun Australian's founder, Tim Oberg. Tim was the person who brought largest free running activity to Australia and grew it to what it is today. And now he's ready to help kids find a love of moving their body through the RAD Run Club.
On any given Saturday morning, around 6000 Australians volunteer to ensure parkrun runs smoothly and we would like to shout out this amazing community contribution this National Volunteers Week. Thank you for being the heart and soul of this regular cultural event.

The ABC and Deakin University recently released the findings of a survey of elite female athletes and the results say a lot about the work still to be done in women's sport. In some parts, there seems to be progress. In others, the results are grim. Regardless, we wanted to bring in the ABC's Deputy Editor Amanda Shalala to unpack the numbers for us and remind us why these sorts of surveys are so important in the women's sport landscape.

Saturday sport can bring out the best in our kids… and the loudest in us. One minute they’re chasing the ball, the next they’re sitting in the grass making daisy chains. As a sideline parent, something in us flicks. Suddenly we’re “just giving tips” at a volume the entire suburb can hear.

Boxing Day can mean different things to different people – shopping the sales or eating endless Christmas leftovers. For many, the Boxing Day test is central to the day: family crowded around the TV, arguing over runs, soaking up the game.
For Rana Hussain, cricket gave that same sense of belonging. But in fact organised sport wasn’t really set-up for her. Whether it was the non-inclusive uniforms, the lack of knowledge of cultural expectations, or simply the lack of diversity in the food offered at sports clubs, Rana felt locked out of sport.
Today, Rana’s changing that. As founder of Good Human, she’s helped sporting organisations like Cricket Australia and various football clubs build spaces that are inclusive, welcoming, and community focused.

Before sport was graded, scored and analysed... what did you love to play? Not just do, but actually, play?
That feeling of joy, curiosity and being completely immersed in something is known as the 'play state'. Mindset coach Ben Crowe says most of us leave it behind far too early. As sport becomes organised, measured, and outcome-driven, we change from playing for love to playing for approval.
Redefining success and reconnecting with play is central to Ben’s work with athletes includingtennis stars Ash Barty andAndre Agassi and surfer Molly Picklum. It's helped them transform their relationships with sport as a result.
Ben says play is as essential as sleep, so how do we bring more of it back, for ourselves and for our kids?

Swimmer Ellie Cole has spent most of her life adapting. Losing her leg aged three meant learning how to move differently, think differently, and push through moments most kids never face. That early resilience didn’t just make her a Paralympian - it shaped how she sees sport and who gets to take part in it.
Ellie’s clear about one thing: inclusive sporting spaces aren’t just for athletes with disabilities. When kids grow up training beside people with different bodies and different life experiences, they learn how to work with others, how to communicate, and how to build real community.
When more people can participate, everyone benefits. So if inclusion makes sport stronger, why not design every club that way?

As a kid growing up in the suburbs of Melbourne, sport was the soundtrack for Hugh van Cuylenburg’s childhood. That deep, visceral connection to sport looks different since Hugh founded The Resilience Project, but the lessons of sport continue to inform every aspect of his life.
“I experienced shocking burnout. I wouldn’t have got through it all without track. There’s no way. I feel like [sport is] almost petrol. I feel when my tank is empty. I go the track and I fill up and go; I’m good now,” he says.
And the broader opportunity for sport? To be the place where neurodiverse, or people with a disability, or just the less talented can also be involved.

Imagine walking out in front of 15,000 people, taking a deep breath, smiling and thinking: “How cool is this?” That was Ash Barty on centre court… and she still chose to leave while at the top of her game.
Ash shares her insights into what really sits behind those trophies: the brutal Wimbledon loss that sent her back to the drawing board, the conversation with her coach that flipped her mindset, and the “why not me?” question she now shares with kids.
From the West Brisbane Tennis Centre to Grand Slams (via cricket) and back to community sport, she’s seen more than most and truly understands what it is to “play” sport.

Sporties! We are back and do we have CHATS for you. Are there 2 many influencers at the tennis? Should Netflix be encouraging a man to scale a skyscrapper without a rope? And how do we feel about the new Scotty James documentary on Netflix. Rest assured, we are refreshed, we are ready for the kids to go back to school and WE HAVE THOUGHTS.

We've all been the worst of on a team (yes, even our resident Olympian). And through that process, we learnt oh so much. Here's a snippet from a chat we had a couple of years ago with our non-sporty mate, Rebecca Sparrow, all about what we learnt when we found ourselves to be the worst on a team.

We hear it so often - where are kids supposed to go when they just want to the play sport for fun? Once you get to 18+, there are a HUGE amount of social sport opportunities. But well before that, once the Auskicks and the Net Set Go stops, and the grading begins, where are kids who aren't competitive meant to play? This is a chat we had with tween and teen educator and author Rebecca Sparrow a couple of years ago about the need for kids to have social sport options.

Some Saturdays you may be on the sidelines of kids sport and wonder if you've accidentally turned up to the AFL Grand Final. Or the Super Netball GF. Or even game 5 of the Ashes. Because the level of parent involvement is just, well, INTENSE. Be it yelling, taunting, or even having a crack at the ref, parent behaviour is a real issue in kids sport. This is part of a chat we had with tween and teen educator and author Rebecca Sparrow, about the sidelines of kids sport and how we can all make little changes that make a big difference.

It's Christmas holidays and while we may not know what day it is we certainly know this - as one year closes we ALWAYS start thinking about what next year might bring. And central to that is the how of getting things done. Be it sport, exercise or movement (or anything else for that matter!) understanding how motivation works is crucial. We hope you enjoy this chat we had with Rebecca Sparrow from a couple of years ago - between the 3 us of we have elite, community and reluctant sports particpation all covered!

Kids in water polo are playing in multiple teams, multiple age groups and multiple locations in one weekend - is it too much? We don't know much about water polo, but we certainly know someone who does! This week we welcome to the Sportish studio the coach of the Australian Women's Water Polo Team (The Stingers) and Olympian, Bec Rippon.

While we were on holidays Brisbane became the Australian epicentre of sport and Libby is suggesting that it all started with a swimming gold medal back 16 years ago? Stay with us. Meanwhile, it feels like McLaren's Papaya rules have got a little out of hand and we are very concerned that it's distracting to Oscar (a bit of ssshhh please for our Driver's Championship contender)! Crunch time at the Women's Rugby World Cup! We’re sitting down with former Aussie 7 and current NRLW player, Dominque du Toit, to get her take on all the action, both on the pitch and behind the scenes (Ilona, pretty bows, lack of press coverage - the works). We'll also tackle Libby's two quick sports things for the week and chat about some incredible new research: playing after-school sports can make girls 50% more likely to get a top job later in life. We're here for it!

Another week, another situation where a football club forgets that they have an important role in society that goes beyond the game. The countdown is on! With the Winter Olympics in Italy just over 6 months away, we're getting into the Games spirit. This week, we're joined by Australian Olympic curler and bona fide legend, Tahli Gill. She's here to talk all things brooms, rocks, and life on the ice, from what it's like to be an athlete in a sport you've probably never seen in person, to travelling to another country for national trials....
Plus Georgie can’t stop talking about girls' cricket (much to Libby’s dismay), and we share our "gold medal moments" of the week – the stories that are making us feel all the feels.

Royal Life Saving Australia recently released a report that had some pretty disturbing statistics, including the fact that most primary school kids can't swim 50m by the end of primary school. What does a Mid Week Hall of Fame nominee look like?.... It's a grassroots, authentic moment that deserves to be celebrated. It doesn't have to be a win, it doesn't have to be a personal best time and a good test is "could this be a story line in a movie or episode". If in doubt, nominate away!

When it comes to the Olympics, there is nothing better than a sports montage set to banging tunes or an Olympic anthem that gives you chills (remember Gloria Estefan and Atlanta? We absolutely go there). So when we heard that Jessica Mauboy had released a team song for the Australian athletes, we had no choice to revisit that time when the Australian swimming team wrote and recorded their own Olympic song.
You can watch the 2008 Aussie Swim Team song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikt4SuzGGsc
And if you're looking for goosebumps, go and watch Gloria delivers the goods: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3EFOSJ4ZQc

Look, we get it. Not everything can be free. But when it comes to key sporting moments, don't you think everyone should be able to watch? In a society where sharing a cultural moment is becoming increasingly rare, do we want it to be harder?

Joe Williams grew up in the NSW country town of Cowra, lived for Saturday morning sport and dreamed of becoming a footy player. Hello! We're back and this week we're so excited to bring you an new interview with one of my all time favourites of Australian swimming - Giaan Rooney.
Giaan joined the Australian swimming team at 15, and went on to participate in multiple Olympic and Commonwealth Games and World Championships. She's collected a host of medals for relays and individual swims, and today is a much loved and respected part of the swimming commentary team. Her transition from swimming to real life wasn't entirely seamless, but my goodness, it was close. I am in awe of what she has achieved and her process to work through everything.

All that Glitters is back with some of our favourite conversations from the archives!
Layne Beachley learnt a lot from winning 8 world surfing titles and breaking new ground for female athletes, but some of the biggest learnings happened when she finally became still and listened. Layne has sat through pain and discomfort and my goodness, has she grown through that experience.

If you've listened to any of these episodes, you'll know how absolutely passionate I am about people staying connected with sport and movement, in any form. So when I saw the facts about the drop in participation in kids sport (it's so bad it's called a participation cliff), I wanted to be part of a solution. A movement. To keep kids in the game.
I'm jumping into your feed to bring you an episode of a new podcast I've been working on with Rebecca Sparrow (tween/teen author and advocate) and Georgie Trickett (kids coach and my cohost on The Sport Social). It's called Play On: Helping teens stay in the game, and I'd love you to take a listen.
Off the back of the Matilda's epic World Cup campaign, a wave of tweens and teens are thinking about starting a new sport. That can be tricky, and often, no one's as good as they'd like to be. Stick around and let us unpack that for you.....
What to do when...you're the worst player in the team
Ouch. What do you do if you’re the worst player on the team? Bec, Georgie and Libby offer solutions for staying in the game including asking yourself to check the story you’re telling yourself about your performance. Libby shares how sucking at netball helped her find swimming and Georgie discusses the pain of being moved UP a level and being the weakest and youngest link.
If you love this episode, we have more!
Available as a limited series here: https://rebeccasparrow.com/play-on/ (All That Glitters listeners can get a 10% discount using PLAY10. You're welcome). Just follow the link and Play On will load into your preferred podcast app.

When Aidan Toua left his home in Papua New Guinea and landed in Brisbane to start highschool, he quickly figured out that the connections forged through sport were of critical importance. And so began his relationship with rugby. What started out as a way to make friends quickly became an opportunity to play professionally. In 2011, Aidan was recruited into the Queensland Reds and also went on to play for the ACT Brumbies and the Japan based Honda Heat. Unfortunately, a string of injuries meant that he sometimes spent more time rehabbing with the physios then with his teammates.
Why does this matter? Because Aidan was forced pretty early on in his career to confront the fact that rugby might not be the only thing in his life. That didn’t mean that he missed being told what to wear and where to be when he retired. And he’s honest about the fact that he couldn’t work out why no was just offering him a job. But when retirement slowly dawned on him, it was almost out of necessity - rugby actually became the thing that needed to end to create space.
Understanding what your motivations are as an athlete is everything. To know what drives you makes the transition into the next stage of life just that little bit easier. Go listen - I think you’ll be able to hear Aidan’s enthusiasm for what comes after sport.

As a refugee who grew up in relative poverty, Jelena Dokic figured out that not only did she love tennis, she was really good at it. Tragically for Jelena, as her career took off, so did the abuse from her father. Despite reaching a #4 world ranking, and seemingly on a career high, in the background her father was mentally and physically abusing her.
At 29 years of age, Jelena was forced to retire due to injury. Almost overnight, life became so different and the thing that was so wrapped up in her identity - playing tennis - was gone. Jelena didn’t know what she wanted to do or what she was good at, but she knew tennis, in some form, still needed to be part of her life.
Inspirational is a term that is frequently overused, but in this instance it is absolutely relevant. To have endured the level of trauma that she did and rise to the top of her sport, and then transition to a successful career in commentary, is amazing. But to then relive her trauma to educate the public about family violence, and to provide sporting commentary that is informed by her trauma, is incredibly generous and nothing short of inspirational.

Rachael Walsh was drawn to classical ballet because it was hard. And being a country kid, she was told many times that she would never make it. But thanks to a wonderful ballet teacher, Rachael discovered that her body could become an amazing instrument of dance. For 18 years she danced with the Queensland Ballet, and for 10 of those years she was the Principal Dancer with the Company.
In 2014, a chronic hip issue meant that Rachael had to retire from the profession and artistic outlet that she loved. In the years leading up to retirement, Rachael had been deliberately absorbing the inner workings of the Queensland Ballet Company - she seems to have instinctively known that if she wasn’t dancing, she needed ballet to be a part of her world. And under the fresh leadership of Li Cunxin, Rachael has delighted in working in the organisation and is now the Director of Foundation for the Company.
Like so many retired athletes (myself included!) Rachael still feels like she’s in transition. I absolutely understand how she feels when she says that nothing can really replace the experience of elite athletic perfection. And what is your identity if you can no longer refer to yourself as an athlete in your sport?
Enjoy listening to this more artistic athletic chat - it really was so good for my soul.

As a scrawny teen, David Shillington was nothing special when it came to rugby league. But by the age of 19, he had found his place in the front row and went on to play for the Sydney Roosters, Canberra Raiders and Gold Coast Titans, as well as represent Queensland in the State of Origin and Australia in many international matches.
When he eventually retired after 12 seasons and many more injuries, the question of identity really came to the forefront. As hard and destabilising as it was for Dave, it wasn’t entirely unexpected. The sheer physicality of his role seems to have meant that he was always aware that rugby league was not a forever job. And thanks to career transition officers who would seek out ageing players for a chat and a little (now expanded) retirement program run by the NRL called “Play On”, he had some skills to adapt to change.
I love that Dave has taken all those learnings from his NRL days (including the performance improving habit of meditation) and embedded them into real life. The importance of the retirement process, and joy of finding your post sport purpose was absolutely fascinating to me. I hope you love it too.

Growing up on the Mornington Peninsula, Bianca Chatfield was happy to try any sport she could. And while it wasn’t visible in the media, netball was the one place where Bianca felt like she fitted in and could hold herself up high.
Through a lot of determination and grit, Bianca played at the highest levels of the sport. And the longer she played, the more she realised that it was less about the competition (although really, does that competitive edge really ever leave an athlete?) and more about the team, the experience and the joy of being out on court.
Bianca’s story beautifully explains why sport is so much more than sport. How the relationships you foster can support you well into life in the real world. How problem solving skills make going on TV shows like The Block a very non-nonsense affair. And how moving your body in any way is always a good idea.
I hope you enjoy this chat as much as I did!

Hi All that Glitters listeners,
I'm dropping this episode of The Sport Social into your feed as it's all about athletes that 'retired'....and then came back (something I know a little bit about).
The Sport Social is a weekly podcast I do with Georgie Trickett (my sister-in-law), a self-described jack of all sports (softball, running, snow sports, even javelin), at a less Olympic, more amateur level.
In each episode, we talk about the week in sport (but you'll rarely hear a score), interview athletes or sports experts about something interesting, and round it out with some grassroots sporting gold or a recommendation.
If you like what you hear, head on over to The Sport Social and check it out!
Producer Jase is away on his honeymoon, and while he said we could try and record our normal weekly episode ourselves, we all agreed that the likelihood of us mucking something up was HIGH.
So that we could keep delivering some relevant sports chat, we’ve called up two exceptional athletes, Lauren Jackson and Cody Simpson, to talk to them about their respective comebacks to basketball and swimming in 2022. Even if you’ve never heard of Cody or watched Lauren, we think you’ll love these stories.
Back in 2021, Australian basketball legend Lauren Jackson started returning to the gym, just to get fit and healthy. She started shooting some hoops with her best friend and decided it would be fun to play for Albury (the local team she’d always wanted to play for). And then she had a look at the fitness requirements for the national squad and she was fit enough to meet some of them. You know where this is going. But what she didn’t expect was how much she would re-live the pain of her first retirement and how important that process was.
In 2009, Cody Simpson walked away from junior swimming to go and live out his music dreams. Regarded by greats such as Ben Harper as “one of the guitarists of his generation”, by 2019 Cody couldn’t shake the feeling that he was meant to swim. Knowing that music was for a lifetime, he started training again to see what he could achieve. And while there’s a drive to succeed in arenas like the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, he’s found that purity of sport that was missing from music. We can’t wait to see what’s to come.

What happens when you reach the pinnacle of your sport behind two of the best swimmers of all time? Jason Cram lived in the shadow of greats such as Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett and left the sport thinking he had never achieved anything. He drifted into retirement with no real idea of what he would do next.
But while setting up surf life saving events, managing Disney Cruises and working on James Packer's yacht (just google Mariah Carey jetski guy), Jason discovered that life has chapters, and that swimming was just one of them.
There are so many unexpected twists and turns in this conversation, and I was left with the feeling that there really is so much life to experience after sport.
Enjoy!

Breaking onto the world cricketing scene at the age of 20 and maintaining an international career until he was 39, Shane Watson seems to have been acutely aware that cricket was just for a moment and not a lifetime. Four years before retiring, Shane started putting in place structures to help him move into his post cricket life: some worked, some didn’t. In all my conversations with retired athletes to date, this is the first chat I’ve had with someone who had that much foresight.
Regardless of whether you’re a follower of cricket, there is so much to take away from this discussion. Mental skills impact all aspects of our life, mentors are important, luck plays a part and you’ve got to be willing to put yourself out there and be prepared (and comfortable) to fail.

In 2016 Tom Boyd was in the first premiership winning Western Bulldogs team since 1954. He kicked the goal that would go down as one of the greatest moments in AFL history and put the Premiership out of reach of the Sydney Swans.
Giving up a multi-million dollar contract, the story of Tom's retirement just over 2 years later, at the age of 23 is remarkable. Tom speaks so beautifully about the importance of managing your mental health, being happy regardless of factors like money and how retirement isn't the end, it's a career transition.

Susie O’Neill. The iconic Madame Butterfly. One of the original golden girls, in a golden era of swimming. She was a role model for me and many in my generation.
She is one of the most down to earth people you could ever have the pleasure to meet. An undefeated world beater for so many years and kind as they come.
And yet, perfectionism, self doubt and not knowing how to apply her skills learnt through so many years of hard work, impacted her transition into life after sport and in her role as a mother.

FINALLY! Another episode out and it is a cracker!
Dr Lauren Burns is an Olympic gold medallist from Sydney 2000 in Tae Kwon Do, a sport that not many Australians would have thought about participating in, let alone winning a GOLD MEDAL AT THE OLYMPICS!
We talk about her “alternative” childhood, her fierce desire to ask questions and learn in all aspects of her life, her ability to ask for the space that she needed as an athlete, how she has been able to transition her learnings and passion from her sport into her career after AND LITERALLY ONE OF THE BEST FIRST THOUGHTS AFTER WINNING A OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL I HAVE EVER HEARD. There are always some people we know in our lives who seem to have been dealt more than their fair share in life.
Meagan Nay is one of those people. When she was just 3 years old she lost her father, Robert, in a car accident. In 2009, on the eve of the Rome World Championships, the unthinkable happened, she lost her brother Amos, also in a car accident.
Turns out lightning can strike a family twice.
Megz is so open about her experiences during these difficult moments in her life and also in the challenges she faced in transitioning to life outside of swimming. But as we discuss she’s finding passion and purpose again, somewhere where she wasn’t sure she would and it’s a joy to watch her to grow and thrive!

It’s so easy to judge people we don’t really know. To judge people in the public eye where we see barely 1% of their lives. To judge or be envious of their achievements. To judge their decisions, to judge mistakes. To judge. Even though we might admire or respect, we still judge. Both can be true.
I’ve been guilty of this many times in my life, and I certainly have been guilty of this with this weeks guest.

He is someone who I have been keen to interview for a very long time. I’ve been fascinated by his journey through the NRL beginning with a premiership and finishing with a wooden spoon.
I was fascinated how he followed a single coach to different teams, how he openly checked himself into a mental health facility, and how he has now gone on to educate others and do great things in the mental health space.

Fellow Townsvillian, Natalie Cook, captured all of Australia with her beach volleyball partner, Kerri Pottharst winning gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
It was and still is an absolutely iconic moment in Australian Sporting history, right up there with Cathy Freeman’s win in the 400m and the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay at the same Games.
But that’s not where Nat’s story ends. She went on to compete at another UNBELIEVABLE three Olympic Games! Becoming the first Australian woman to compete at an astonishing five Olympics.
Nat was so vulnerable and candid in this chat and I was so grateful to be in this conversation with her. She continues to inspire and advocate for athletes and I just know that she will continue to have a huge impact on sport in Australia!

Grant Hackett. Hacky.
He was one of those athletes that I was lucky enough to admire from afar before making the team and also, had the privilege of being part of the team with him.
He has always been put up on a pedestal in my mind. An exceptional athlete, who always chose to lead by example.
He’s also been through a couple of very public breakdowns and some enormously difficult personal circumstances.
I’ve known him as the leader of our Australian team who I looked up to (literally and metaphorically) and now I know him as someone who continues to grow and evolve and is now an incredible business leader who is capable of vulnerability and who continues to lead by example.

I was so unbelievably nervous to do this interview.
Jodie Henry has been a rival, she has been a competitor and now she is someone I count as a friend.
I really wanted to do her incredible career justice and I wanted to share different parts of her story, which is also sharing parts of my story, as our lives for a period of time were so heavily intertwined.
I count myself incredibly lucky to swim in the time of Jodie, as annoyingly talented as she was, she made me better. She has always been one of the nicest people you could ever meet, which made it really hard for me to try and compete with her!
Her transition into life after sport was relatively “smooth” but it was her transition into life after kids are at school, that made her start to realise that she was looking for new challenges!
Jodie is as delightful, kind and thoughtful as ever and I know you’ll love this chat as much I did! Enjoy xx

In January, Jamason Daniels took to Facebook to pay tribute to a fellow AFL player who had recently died by suicide.
What the post also did was describe in beautiful and painful detail, his own experience of AFL, of being delisted and starting from ground zero. With no job, no money and no qualifications.
Jamo’s story is not an isolated experience in transition out of sport and this conversation is one of the most important reasons I wanted to start this podcast.
Let’s bring this topic into the spotlight and find out, in Jamo’s own words “what more can we do for these young men and women who give everything to a sport or passion and find themselves filled with shame, embarrassment and no direction?”

Welcome back to the first episode of 2022!
When I was a young swimmer growing up, I had posters of Michael Klim, Geoff Huegill and Scott Miller.
So my inner 13 year old, fangirled to the max speaking to this weeks guest.
Michael Klim famously lead the team - in a WORLD RECORD btw - in the 4 x 100 freestyle relay at the Sydney Olympic Games. It has to be one of the most iconic races in Australian history.
It was so wonderful to sit and chat with Klimmy about his career and how not everything went according to plan. We spoke about how he has navigated life from elite athlete, to business founder and owner, to living a slightly more quiet life in Bali with his swim school.
This chat made me realise that you can continually reinvent yourself, and find more meaning and more depth through your experiences!
I loved this chat and I know you will too! Enjoy xx

A pretty special episode to round out 2021.
What happens when, after years of hard work and dedication, your goal of competing at an Olympic Games or winning a gold medal don’t come to pass? What happens when you fall achingly short of that dream? And not only that, how do you navigate your partner achieving everything you hoped to do in your sport?
My husband Luke was forced to navigate all of these challenges through our relationship and his swimming career.
I really wanted to share Luke’s experiences because I’ve seen firsthand how difficult this was for him (though I probably have only now appreciated just how hard it was for him through this chat - basically a counselling session ) but I’ve also seen what he’s been able to translate those experiences into, in his career after sport. I have no doubt that one of the main reasons he’s become as successful as he has, is because he didn’t reach the levels he wanted to in swimming but has been able to apply everything he learnt from sport.
Look, I’m not going to lie. I loved this chat, I think he’s a pretty special guy (I know I’m biased!) and I hope you enjoy too!
Thank you to everyone for listening this year. It’s been so incredibly special for me to create this podcast and hear your feedback, see where you’re listening and hear what you’ve learnt or enjoyed!
And finally, very special thanks to Jase from @stozkiymedia for actually getting these conversations out into the world.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday and can’t wait to be back in 2022! xx

Tayla Clement has been through more in her short life than anyone should ever have to go through.
Born with the rare Moebius Syndrome which causes facial paralysis and also resulted in talipes (otherwise known as clubfoot). This enabled her to gain qualification into para sport and despite going through extraordinary difficulties which we talk about in our conversation, she continued, if only for a short time, to have an incredibly successful sporting career in TWO vastly different sports.
This is a funny, difficult, honest and beautiful conversation with a woman who has been through so much and yet has the most kind, warm and loving outlook on life.
We all have so much to learn from Tayla. I absolutely loved this conversation and I’m sure you will too.

I was going to make a joke about how this is a podcast episode only my mother will love - mostly because it really does feel entirely self indulgent, to dive into my past life and swimming career.
But that’s a disservice to my coach, Stephan Widmer who was the most important person in my swimming career. He radically changed the trajectory of my achievements and without his guidance, drive and singleminded focus/intensity, I wouldn’t have been the athlete I was.
And yes, it did my ego wonders to chat about how, once upon a time, approximately a million years ago, I was really good at something. And to talk about it with someone who was with me every single step of the way, but Steph is also the first coach I’ve spoken to on the podcast, and it was so wonderful to hear about the role coaches play in athletes lives, how they are constantly striving, how an athletes disappointments hurt them as much as it hurts us.
So many retired athletes, head into coaching so this is an opportunity to hear from one of the best.

Jake Edward’s had a family legacy to live up to. Three members of his family had played more than a 100 games of top tier AFL and he wanted to follow in their footsteps.
But what does it look like when life doesn’t turn out that way?
Jake spoke so openly about his experiences with mental illness and drug and alcohol addiction. This two part episode delves into his life through his AFL career, his rock bottom, getting the help he needs and re-learning the lessons when he dove into the darkness again.
So many people will connect with Jake and his ability to communicate his story will help an untold amount of people, especially young men. I’m grateful for Jake sharing so honestly. I think you will be too.

In life, I’m coming to realise more and more, that mindset is everything. That was certainly the case for Kerri Pottharst and her incredible win on Bondi Beach at the 2000 Olympics with teammate Natalie Cook. Their gold-medal winning mindset took them to the top of their sport at a home Olympics and is something that Kerri continues to utilise to this day.
That’s how she was able to push herself on the SAS course at 55 years old and continues to grow and develop to help other women reach their high performance potential.
Kerri is a wonderfully inspiring woman, who doesn’t let anything slow her down. I know you’ll love this chat!! Enjoy x

Katie Walker has been part of netball, in some capacity, for 38years. Playing, coaching, umpiring, commentating. She’s done it all.
But how did she evolve to become the strong, inspiring woman who lifts others up every single day to be their best selves? How does she raise four kids, with her husband Shane, while running her group fitness training business and her kicking goals with her coaching commitments with the Queensland Firebirds?!
Prepare to be inspired, Katie is warm and real and I will be forever grateful for her because the only reason this podcast even exists is because of the incredible community she creates.

Incredible Ironman athlete, Caroline Steffen, is remarkable in more ways than one.
The Swiss-Aussie started as a national swimmer, dabbled in some Ironman events and then turned to pro cycling. After realising that she was, in fact, an individual athlete, she decided to put it all on the line, move half way around the world to see if she could make it as a pro triathlete.
Caroline, is so open about her experiences so far in the early stages of this transition (she doesn’t like using the ‘R’ word) and I connected with so much of her story! I loved chatting to my very first international athlete! Oh yeah, and then there’s a little story about how she competed just SIX MONTHS after the birth of her first baby. Like I said.. remarkable!
I’ve known Caroline for a very long time after meeting her in 2011 and have followed her career ever since. So trust me when I say you will absolutely fall in love with Caroline “Xena” Steffen! Enjoy x

Jessica Smith is a Paralympian. She was born missing her left arm, is a burns survivor and has battled disordered eating.
She is a mother of 3, an Australian living in the UAE and converted to Islam to marry her husband.
Jess is an advocate for positive body image, diversity and inclusion and disability awareness, and she was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her roles within the community and dedication to sport.
There is no doubt that Jess is a remarkable woman, but with so many different ways to define oneself, how does Jess define herself?
This was a fascinating chat with a woman who has overcome so much in her short life so far and who will continue to achieve wonderful things!

Playing for the Brisbane Broncos in 2009. Selected in the Indigenous All Star in 2010. Scoring tries for the Maroons and playing for Australia in 2011. A career ending injury by 2012.
Jharal Yow Yeh’s meteoric rise in rugby league was cut short when he was just 23 years old by a traumatic compound fracture in his right ankle, while playing, which I vividly remember watching.
So how does somebody navigate the transition into life after sport, not only when the decision isn’t their own and especially when they seemingly still had so much of their career ahead of them?!
This conversation with Jharal was incredibly powerful on how difficult that journey can be but also, how much impact a young man can make in normalising conversations around mental health and illness and asking for help, especially amongst other young men.
I loved this chat with Jharal and I hope you do too!

Growing up in North Queensland in the late 80’s and early 90’s, I can’t say I heard or cared too much about Rugby Union. Even their players I had no interest in, unless it was talking about a league player heading into union.
But in 2017, I heard a story about a young man by the name of David Pocock who was going to take a year off to focus on his studies. As a former athlete, I couldn’t believe an athlete at the top of their game could have the confidence to take a year out to focus on their studies. It was totally a shock and totally inspiring to me. Something I wish I could have had the confidence to do during my career.
From then on, I kept an eye on what David was up to, whether it was to do with the stance he was taking with same sex marriage or his conservation work, I admired the things he stood for and his ability to articulate it when athlete’s are barely allowed to comment on sport.
This conversation was engaging and inspiring and if you don’t feel like changing the world after this chat, then I might argue that you don’t have a pulse!

Daniel Kowalski. Swimming’s Mr Nice Guy.
When I was growing up, I mostly only admired athletes for their medals. Athletes who won specifically, or broke world records.
But Dan was different, even though he was an amazingly successful athlete winning medals in 3 individual events at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics - something I could only dream of! More importantly, Dan was kind. He was respectful of his competitors and respected by his peers. That has ALWAYS stuck with me and I believe helped shape who I wanted to be outside of the pool. Because you could be a great competitor and a nice person!
I really loved my chat with Dan, and I’m sure you’ll see what I’m talking about when you have a listen!

This chat with Lauren was absolutely fascinating to me.
As someone who still misses swimming deeply (especially after coming off the buzz of the Olympics), to hear someone say they don’t miss their sport really surprised me. It’s not something I thought was possible!

Matthew Hayden has had an incredible career as an Aussie Cricketer but through my conversation with him, it became clear to me that that was just the start.
"Cricket always got in the way of a good tour" this is something Matthew says during our chat and it stuck with me. Although he played 568 matches and scored 119 centuries, cricket was only ever part of the journey for him. This was a warm and uplifting conversation with one of Australia’s greatest cricketers but I think the real testament to Haydos is that he is an even better human being.
I hope you get something from this great conversation!

But what did it actually take for him to get that opportunity? How many years of sacrifice, injuries, near death experiences, did it take for him to have that chance?

When I was 15 years old and watching the Sydney Olympics, I remember seeing another 15 year old, waggle her fingernails at the camera and go on to win a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke. It totally blew my mind, that someone my age was standing there on the world stage, not just mixing it with the best in the world but winning medals! This made me realise that swimming might be something that maybe I could possibly do too.
That 15 year old girl was Leisel Jones. Not only did she mix it with the best, she DOMINATED the sport over four Olympics and took her events to levels that people couldn’t have believed were possible!
