On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, we go into a quick brain teaser that actually plays a little bit of a role into understanding the complexities of retirement planning. Deeper into the show, we discuss what consolidation is inside of retirement planning, and why it may make sense for you if you have worked in a lot of different places, you may find yourself with a lot of different types of accounts that need to be brought all under one clear and easy to understand plan, and sometimes that means consolidating accounts altogether. Just like everything we recommend on our show, this decision to consolidate needs to be taken into effect with an overall plan and you need to be working with an advisor- if you would like a second set of eyes on your plan with someone who specializes specifically in retirement income phase, we would be happy to assist you with that! Things you need to be aware of before you go down that journey, and while we believe that it takes a lot more than just investing in strong dividends to make an income portfolio work, we talk a lot about the volatility of the stock market on this show and you don't want to miss it!

On this episode of the Retirement Matters Podcast, we jump into what Dale calls the Mr. Miyagi theory to retirement planning! We have recently written an article that has been picked up by one of the nations leading financial publications, Kiplinger magazine, and in the process of publishing that article! The article is called The Risk on Risk off Portfolio! Something we called the Mr. Miyagi portfolio because of the reference to wax on wax off. In this case, it is risk on risk off. We believe that every retirees income phase needs to have a portfolio that is built around this idea of somebody going with market volatility ups and downs, while we try our best to eliminate or mitigate downside. This is considered our risk on position and then we want some money that has absolutely no chance of downside, which is what we would consider a risk off position. In the show we go a little bit deeper in detail and as you can imagine we’ve titled the show what does Mr. Miyagi have to do with retirement planning? We hope you enjoy!

You don't want to miss this show! Stay tuned into the last segment where we discuss a story that equates your retirement income plan to a commercial airline flight path!

On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, we do a little bit of a deep dive around interest rates. We go very deep for a radio show and how there is a correlation between interest rates and price of bonds and we even give you a visual, but I hope you can see as you’re listening to this on how those two relate to one another. We discuss the impact of what an interest-rate move up or down by the Fed can due to a stock that you may own and then, as we go into the show a little deeper, we discuss why it’s important to have a purpose in Retirement!

This episode of the Retirement Matters podcast, we talk to you about Roth IRAs. We take a minute to build up our explanation of why we believe taxes will increase, and why retirees should be planning for a higher tax environment when they retire in the future. With this knowledge, we make recommendations based off of a retirees goals. There are a lot of times, where CPAs or other advisors even may say, let’s invest your money into an IRA or to your 401(k) when in reality, they should be looking at it more holistically, especially as we approach the Retirement Income phase and begin to plan for retirement income. It doesn’t really matter how much money your investments make it’s all about how much money you get to keep! That’s why at RDS Wealth, we believe in a well written tax plan- understanding what you will be paying, where that money will come from and ultimately is there any savings to be had by doing some moves now and filling up the existing tax bracket you find yourself in. On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, our objective is clear. Dale brings clarity to you around NOT chasing returns. We want to be sure that our listeners are not out seeking the highest rate of return possible without understanding exactly what it is they need the stock market to do for them, and with that we introduce a few stories and a couple analogies. Of course we do our pause for positivity to give some insight. If there is anything we can do for you as you are listening to this podcast today, we want to extend our services to you as an offer to sit down with someone on our team!

On this episode of The Retirement Matters Show, Dale brings education to you around 'reactions to the stock market' and what it can entail. Recently, there have been a lot of questions come our way regarding the market- wondering if they should act and get in now. Our goal in this show is to help educate the listener on whether or not they should be 'reacting' to what’s going on in the market. With that being said, whether the market is good or bad, don't overreact. Just because the stock market does what the stock rises/falls does not always require a reaction from you and a lot of times what we physically and emotionally want to do is the wrong decision because of an overreaction.

On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, we do a deep dive into the income plan, talk a little bit about the investment plan and then at the very end hit on our tax planning strategies for most retirees. Every retirement plan is built differently, because every retirement plan is unique to the individual we're building it for, however it’s very imperative that an individual going into retirement has clarity around how much money they need, that their investments are built to be able to generate that money and then of course, that their tax plan is built to deliver that money or get that money to them as efficiently as possible! A great show we have in store for you today, we hope you enjoy!

On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale brings to you a really neat analogy of how the market works. He talks about a five sided coin! We know this coin has a certain number of heads and a certain number of tails, and just because you get a bad flip every so often doesn't mean you stop playing the game. Especially since the odds are so much in your favor. The stock market works very similarly!

On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale talks with you about a 72T and a rule of 55 distribution. These two distributions are both used for the same purpose but in different applications. They’re both designed to allow you to get to your money earlier than 59 1/2 but without penalty. However, both of them should be considered a last alternative if it all possible. Whether or not these rules are for you should be determined the inside of a well written retirement plan! That’s why we bring this information to you. Understanding a little bit about this could potentially prompt you to discuss things with your financial advisor. With that being said, if you are working with someone already and this information hasn't been brought to you proactively...you may be working with a growth advisor. This is NOT to scare you, it just may be time to transition to an income advisor that specializes in income during retirement.

On this episode of The Retirement Matters Show, Dale talks with you about exactly what it means when you see a percentage rate of return, followed by APY. This becomes very important for savers, especially now as interest rates begin to climb into the fives and even the sixes on some short term investment vehicles that we’re seeing out there! You will see these investment 'vehicles' or contracts that will often display a rate of return that sometimes can become confusing when comparing one to the other. They are utilmately there to 'grow' your money but, today, Dale will provide some clarity around the details inside of those contracts and what a percentage rate of return followed by APY really means.

On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale talks about the number one question you need to know the answer to and that is how much income will you need in retirement! From there, a good retirement advisor should be able to structure a plan that not only tells you how long that money will last, but perhaps maybe even save you from some major market corrections that are sure to come your way if you live long enough. Structuring this plan in a way where you know where you’re going is key- you can’t hit a target if you can’t see the target and that is why it’s important to adjust and fix your eyes on a specific income target! Too many retirees are going into retirement, not knowing what their income goals are, and for that reason they will likely never achieve the type of retirement they have always imagined. They will likely live what we call the ‘what if’ retirement which leads to them never spending all of their money or at least not the amount of money they could have spent! Don't live a 'what if' retirement- our team can help you!

In order to make sure your retirement is EVERYTHING you've imagined it to be- we must have protection. Don't wait until the storm comes before you buy an umbrella.

On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, we bring to you the definition of holistic planning. Our goal with this episode is to show you exactly what it means to have a comprehensive plan as opposed to just a portfolio of stocks, bonds and mutual funds. A lot of people are working with advisers along their retirement journey who are really good at picking the stocks or maybe they’re not that good and they’re just handing it off to someone else who is! At the end of the day, you’ve got to make sure that Advisor is well equipped to build the ENTIRE plan and not just the investment plan- which is one of the FIVE planning pieces you need to be implementing in this phase of your life.

On this episode of the Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale comes to you with the understanding that Roth conversions could very easily help you in the tax planning category of your retirement plan! At the end of this episode, after spending a lot of time on taxation, he actually hits very strongly, the other five worlds of retirement income planning in addition to tax planning, and why you have to be very efficient in all five worlds. Just like most of the other episodes that we have on this podcast, this particular episode comes to you from a recent radio show that we’re doing in south-central Kentucky, North Central Tennessee. We love serving that community, but we are more than happy and more than able to help the listeners of this podcast. In this episode of The Retirement Matters Show, Dale talks to you about a frightful, four letter word... RISK. Risk is a particular word that can be detrimental to a lot of retirees who have not built a plan. It is the fear that we hear about when starting to build a plan with a lot of retirees, but if used correctly, it could be exactly what we use inside of the plan to make all of our dreams come true by building the proper income plan. Knowing exactly how risk will benefit us and what amount of risk is needed to get to where we are desiring to be, we can put together a perfect mix portfolio of stocks, bonds, mutual funds and some insurance products- whatever it takes for our client to feel at peace and the ability to live a life free from the worries of running out of money, allowing them to spend more time and money on and with the people they care about and less time worrying about the stock market.

On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale discusses whether or not you should be in a 401(k) when you retire. It is very unlikely that people should be retiring with all of their money in a 401(k)- most of us will need to employ an IRA instead! Dale is going to talk to you about 401k's, about the pros and cons, how they started, when they started, why they started and what you should doing if you are approching the age of 59 1/2, you are approaching retirement, or you have already retired and you still have a 401(k) as opposed to the IRA.
If there are details about this in your own situation that seem a little fuzzy, we hope to clear that up inside of this podcast. On this episode of the Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale brings to you the information you need on how to invest wisely and what your mindset needs to be the closer you get to your retirement destination! He uses an analogy of football a lot on this show and he brings it back full circle by asking a question at the beginning of the show. This trivia question is answered around the second section of the show where he then brings back the analogy of- the closer you get to the end zone- those plays need to change and evolve in order to accomplish the objective. It’s not that one particular play is better than the other, just like its not that one investment is better than the other- it’s all about where you are in position of the field and what play needs to be called for that particular mission. When you reach the retirement 'redzone', your play calling aka ‘investments’ need to change. This is a great analogy to help you realize how important your plan is the closer you get to retirement!

On this episode of the Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale brings to you a recent radio show he did from a few weeks back where he discussed 2 main things you need to be looking at in your retirement journey, especially as you get closer to the date of retirement! Dale talks often about the growth and income phase - and how working with the wrong person or the wrong firm during the ‘income’ phase can jeopardize your chance at living a life of ‘significance’. The beginning of this episode is about living a life of significance and how you can make that happen a little more easily while the end of the show, Dale brings to you, two specific ways you can manage your current portfolio that will allow you a higher chance of living that life of significance. We want you to be retiring without worry! At RDS Wealth, our entire goal is to build a plan that brings you the freedom and flexibility, the time and desire to get out and spend all of your money on and with the people you care about. In this episode of the retirement matters show, Dale talks about the importance of setting down with an INCOME advisor and what it means to have a strategic plan built for your retirement journey.

Knowing when and how to take Social Security is one of the most important choices you will face when retiring. You don’t have to do this alone! Our team is here to help you build the plan that meets your dreams and your goals in order for you to live an optimal retirement.

Always remember to Save Money, Plan Well and Live Happy in retirement.
On this episode of The Retirement Matters Show, we spend a great deal of time discussing a very common but overlooked strategy called the spousal benefit when claiming social security. Knowing when and how to take social security is one of the most important choices you will face when you're retiring. You can't do this without putting this into a plan-you can’t make an accurate decision on just about anything without having a formal plan. We call that the base plan of record. From there, we can run a cash flow analysis on any of the other decisions you may want to make - can you pull more money? Should you pull less money? Should you work a little bit longer? When should you take social security? All of that is answered by implementing a plan- proper planning prohibits for performance. If you are not making financial decisions based around a financial plan, then you may actually be planning to fail. You only have ONE chance at this thing we call retirement and if you would like a second opinion on how to do that properly, we would love an opportunity to do so.
A worry free retirement is something everyone can achieve. We want to show you how.

On this episode of the Retirement Matters Podcast, we discuss ways to make your retirement a little bit easier. When you retire, you will be faced with several “next steps” to get you where you want to be. One way you can make those steps a little easier is by calling a firm that specializes in retirement income planning, like ours, RD Smothers Wealth Management. When you do this, rather than having to walk each step alone in your proverbial “staircase” towards retirement- it’s almost like calling yourself an elevator. Calling the elevator is a much easier way to get to the top! As a result, you spend a lot less energy climbing or worrying that you are going the right way, and you can spend that energy on things you care about. And for those of you who consider yoursleves 'do-it-yourselfers', we mention by name a few specific steps that you will encounter along this proverbial retirement staircase. It is our hope that you will be prepared for these steps as you encounter them and as always know that we are here to assist you should you find yourself tired of climbing alone. Enjoy the show! A worry free retirement is something everyone can achieve. We want to show you how.

Always remember to Save Money, Plan Well and Live Happy in retirement.
On this episode of The Retirement Matters Show, we talk about the specific and very unique decisions you will be making as you approach retirement. Especially as you’re getting ready to retire, there are some things you need to be thinking about and addressing that you've probably never considered before. They’re not financial at all. They’re more emotional. We talk about those closer to the end of the show. At the beginning of the show we talk about not comparing yourself-and that also being emotional- is necessary as you plan for retirement. You can not compare yourself to friends, relatives, or your co workers. Your specifics, your situation, your financial plan are all different than any of those individuals. At RDS Wealth, we believe you don’t have to be rich to live rich as long as you're not comparing yourself to others. If you’re not doing that, then you have the ability to live a rich life with the money and the opportunities you have been granted.
A worry free retirement is something everyone can achieve. We want to show you how.

In this episode of The Retirement Matters show, Dale discusses how there are multiple different tools you should be using to achieve your retirement success. He uses a golfing analogy to explain exactly how using the right tools in your retirement journey can be extremely important and If you’re not using the right tool, the chance of success is very slim.
The backend of retirement is extremely specialized to what you need and that 5 years or fewer away from retirement should be a place where you’re working with a retirement specialist who is well equipped with the right tools to build the retirement income you need. Liken that to golf, determining which club to use depending on where you are on the course determines your success in the game.
We would love to help you be your Master in retirement income- when you are on the proverbial green or you are in a green side bunker, and you’ve found that you’re just not right where you want to be- needing a way out- we can help you understand the path forward. We are masters with the sand wedge and the putter when it comes to retirement income.

In this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast with Dale Smothers, Dale uses a golfing analogy to help you understand why it’s necessary to use different investment strategies as you progress along your retirement journey.
Just as it’s necessary to switch from a driver to a putter once you have landed your ball on the green, it is equally as important for you to be using a different mindset and an entirely different set of investment tools as you get closer to your retirement date.
Everyone desires a successful retirement, but until you realize where you are along your unique journey, it will be difficult for you to plan properly for the next steps, you should be taking.
A worry free retirement is something everyone can achieve. We want to show you how.

In this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale talks about alternatives to saving money at the bank. Dale discusses ways you can save money in other institutions or different classes of institutions. The banks are great and safe places to put money, but when you reach a certain level of money at the bank, it may be a wise decision to start looking at alternatives that bring you equivalency in safety and perhaps even tax efficiency as you begin to save more towards your goals!
Remember- it's not about how much money you make when saving, it's about how much money you keep!

Always remember to Save Money, Plan Well and Live Happy in Retirement.
In this episode of The Retirement Matters Show with Dale Smothers , Dale talks about how banks fail, why they fail and he uses the SVB failure in 2023 as an example. The most recent bank failures have caused savers to realize that banks are, indeed, a for-profit-business! To seek their profits, rather than putting our money in their vaults, they will invest our money in risky propositions.
While those risky investments are mostly balanced by very safe investments, it is possible for the bank to see itself upside down in environments like the ones we are facing today, especially with a 'run on the bank'. If this happens, the FDIC steps in and takes control. At the end of the show, Dale discusses a few alternatives to saving money in the bank- if you have reached the FDIC limit for insurance or if you have simply lost trust in the bank.
There are powerful alternatives to saving money when it comes to banks. If your money isn’t working, it’s lazy money…and lazy money will COST you money.

In this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale talks about the impatience of using the right advisor once you've reached your destination of retirement. To Illustrate his point, he provides a personal story about bowling with his children. As he always does, he provides imagery and parallels throughout his story as to help you relate his tips to your own personal retirement journey! Just as bumper guards are used to help children keep their ball rolling down the middle of the lane, the correct advisor can keep your retirement away from the proverbial "gutter" of retirement.
Gutter balls during retirement can be detrimental to your entire plan- work with someone that provides you safety, work with someone who provides you peace of mind, work with someone who provides you with gutter guards!

This podcast is very different from all of our other podcasts. Very seldom will we sell our firm this hard, but it's time. The market is turning and we think it is important that you understand that NOW is the time of action. If you're hooked up to the wrong advisory firm, you could suffer terrible consequences. What differentiates R.D. Smothers Wealth Management from other "big box" firms? We take pride in the fact that we are financially aligned with our clients. If our clients do better, we do better. If they do worse, we do worse. That alone eases their mindset. They realize that we aren't coming at them with a commission mindset. Let us help you build the retirement you have always imagined.
Episode 119: Cereal Popcorn and PuffsDale starts this podcast off with a story about his sons. Dale gave his kids the opportunity to pick out dinner. He opened each drawer and they picked out all of their favorites; cookies, popcorn, cereal, and puffs. If you're not careful, you could end up with a retirement plan that is very similar to their dinner plans. You're going to have all of your advisors favorite stocks, mutual funds, and bonds. You must make your financial decisions as an entire picture. You can't just pick which stock you like because you think it's going up and you completely forget about the idea of it generating the income you would need otherwise. All of your decisions need to be made within a well written retirement plan and WE can do that for you.
On this weeks episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale discusses a motto he has had since he was a child; win humbly and lose wisely. We understand that not everyone operates best while on a team but, if you do everything alone and never partner with others, you create a huge barrier to your own potential. This podcast is for the person trying to do their retirement alone. It may be a success but, it's not ideal. If you want to do something big, you must link up with others. One is too small a number to achieve greatness. "As you face challenges, think about who you can enlist to come alongside you."
On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, let's take a journey. Dale sits down with a travel agent, someone who plans vacations for families all across the world. As a travel agent, his job is to make sure you're not spending too much money and to make sure you're not missing out on amazing opportunities. Many of our retirees have the desire to travel at some point in their life. We like to talk about the "GoGo" years, the first ten to fifteen years after retirement, that's when retirees are spending the most of their money in retirement. We hope a lot of that money goes toward living the lifestyle you desire.
On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale highlights the most recent changes that took place in the Secure Act. We call it the Secure Act 2.0. This bill changed a lot of the retirement rules we know today. It is often said that the tax code is written in pencil, not in pen. We have to realize that this tax code, and the entire retirement system that we bank on, is subject to change in a moments notice. If your advisor is not ready and prepared to make changes for you, it might be time to find a new advisor.
On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale talks about how doing the same exact thing may not be the best thing to do in our day to day lives, especially in the financial world, and how we manage our money.
On this episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, let's go shopping! Dale discusses the "shopping" process of a retiree. He uses the analogy of going to the grocery store as a way to show how a typical retiree or pre-retiree will go throughout their life, their working years, buying stocks and putting them in their basket. Maybe they are taking certain stocks out of their cart and putting them back on the shelves but at the end of the day, what they have in their cart when they check out is what they need to use to build their meals for the future. Very similar, what is in YOUR portfolio will be needed to generate the income YOU desire in your future.Dales uses this analogy to hopefully paint a picture for the listener explaining to them why it is necessary for them to have a plan before entering the preverbal grocery store and why it is necessary for you to work along side a fiduciary advisor to help you build your list to make sure you are buying the right products. Let us help you build your list, make sure the coupons are clipped out when needed, and help you prepare the meal when you get home. It's what we do.
This week on The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale brings you the most recent episode of The Retirement Matters Show. The Retirement Matters Show is a radio show Dale does each and every week that airs in SouthCentral Kentucky and North Central Tennessee. In thisepisode, Dale tells a quick story about his son at a football game and relates that to investment planning. Investment planning, if done in a short-term window with a short-term perspective, can be done entirely wrong yielding a terrible result for your long-term goals. Don't be a bandwagon investor, let us help you make the best investment decisions for your long-term goals!
On this weeks episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale brings you a radio show that aired across Kentucky and Tennessee the weekend of Thanksgiving. The market had a fairly decent week, a short week, but positive. Dale Smothers tells a story about himself learning how to ski and how your mindset must changein retirement. Your approach to retirement planning is different on the way down the mountain then it is up. On the way down the mountain, it's just you and your skis. On the way up, you're sitting on a chair lift that's designed to take you there. The stock market is designed to take you to the top of the mountain, figuratively, but it's a really terrible tool to get you backdown the mountain. Leaving your money 100% in the stock market, in the same stocks that got you to whereyou are in retirement, is one of the biggest mistakes we see retirees making. WE want to make sure that's not you.
On this weeks episode of The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale is bringing you a radio show that aired between November 11 and November 14 across Kentucky and Tennessee. Dale Smothers discusses the most recent move of the CPI (Consumer Price Index), ticking down two tenths of a percent. He discusses why it is important or why you need to be paying attention but also why the irrationality of the market has caused the markets to shoot straight up. It is a very irrational move and at best, it is something you should be paying attention to.At worst, it is something you might need to be selling off. How can YOU separate your retirement success from the ups and downs of the stock market?
"Take the Scenic Route"... this week's podcast almost defines exactly what Dale is talking about. In retirement planning, we tend to see people who are so worried about the stock market, or people who are so worried about running out of money that they don't take the time to enjoy the scenery around them. Dale paints the perfect image that will not only take you the scenic route but will also walk you through how a proper plan will allow you to enjoy the rest of your journey.
Dale brings you the most recent radio show where he discusses the parallels of retirement planning and learning how to fly. The beginning may not be that difficult, during the middle, you just have to keep it steady, but the ending comes down to a critical moment where one wrong thing can mess up the whole plan! Learn ways that you can prevent your saved assets from being ruined by a plane crash.
On this Episode of The Retirement Matters Show, Dale is talking to Josh Turner, a co-founder of the 10ten project, pastor, leader, husband, and, most importantly, a father. Josh has a great story of perseverance, faith, and it teaches a great lesson on how to LIVE HAPPY.
On this Episode of the Retirement Matters Podcast Dale, brings you the most recent radio show where he discusses the Inflation Reduction Act. He brings basic information to you as a retiree and how it may impact you should it come to fruition.
On this episode of the Retirement Matters Podcast Dale pauses for positivity! Now this isn't necessarily financially related, be here at RDS Wealth we believe in Saving Money, Planning Well, and Living Happy. Today's episode is all about that third component. So tune in and pause for positivity!
This week on The Retirement Matters Podcast, Dale discusses 3 different pieces of advice that he has recently come across on an USA Today article that was written by a gentleman who is all over the financial news and who holds himself out as a financial expert. The problem with this is, is that he gets into someone else's lane when he begins to discuss how to invest for retirement rather than sticking with his own specialty of not spending more than you make and making sure you stay out of debt. He will give advice on why or why not you should be purchasing mutual funds. He also talks about when you should begin investing for retirement, and what interest rate to expect when you do begin investing for retirement. Dale goes on to address those 3 pieces advise and why it is important to be able to apply it to your own individual retirement plan.
On this weeks episode of The Retirement Matters Show Dale brings you the most recent Radio show where he discusses the market taking its most recent hit. At the time of this episode the market it down 20-30% depending on what index you are tracking. He says overall there are a lot of opportunities in the market right now that people are afraid to take. He introduces the Monty Hall Problem, and the mathematics behind it. Sometimes changing your mind is a good idea, it's not always a bad thing. Mathematically it is proven in the Monty Hall Problem to be a wise decision. Changing your mind does not mean you were wrong, it means you are now able to take the information at hand and make a better decision. Tune in and learn the why behind the Monty Hall Problem and how you can play into the downs of the market.

Having the potential for stock market gains without the chance of stock market losses... sounds too good to be true, doesn't it? The good news is, it is possible inside of a product called the Fixed Indexed Annuity. The bad news is, there are a lot of insurance sales people who are pushing annuities as the only wise investment, and they have no business OR license to be discussing "investments".
