For most aspiring online entrepreneurs, “making it” means achieving success in your business. But what exactly is business success anyway? And how do outwardly successful online entrepreneurs define "making it"? Here at Mirasee FM, we wanted to find out, so we asked a group of diverse online business owners what success means to them. Their answers and insights surprised, moved, and inspired us. In this podcast, accomplished online entrepreneurs discuss what making it means to them, provide tips for online business success, and share important lessons on business and life that they have learned along the way.
Welcome to Making It! This weekly show explores the lives and stories of entrepreneurs as they share their unique perspectives on their success and the path to making it.Marco Johnson is a former NFL player, former Los Angeles firefighter and paramedic, co-founder of The University of Antelope Valley, and co-founder of Accreditation Advisors Group.
“After my wife and I were grinding away, we kind of took a step back and said, ‘Hey, this is an opportunity for us to establish our community’s own traditional, regionally accredited university.’”— Marco Johnson
Marco Johnson is the owner and co-founder (with his wife, Sandra) of Accreditation Advisors Group, an education advisory firm.
Johnson’s road to entrepreneurship was a winding one. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science and marketing at the University of Hawaii, where he was a star wide receiver for the university team. After graduation, the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans) drafted Johnson in the 10th round of the 1988 NFL draft. He played two seasons on special teams for the Oilers and the Los Angeles Rams before trading his football for a fire hose.
Johnson witnessed hundreds of unnecessary civilian casualties throughout his career due to a lack of civilian cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first-aid training. The most disturbing event for him occurred on Christmas Eve, 1996. Johnson and his colleagues were battling a raging blaze in Los Angeles; a single mother and her three children were trapped inside a burning apartment building. While firefighters successfully rescued the family from the inferno, two children suffered respiratory failure and died before firefighters or emergency personnel could save them. The third child died in the rescue unit.
Johnson believes that if onlookers and passers-by had been trained in the most basic CPR and emergency assistance methods, one or perhaps all of the children would have survived. This tragic event prompted him and his wife to start a CPR school, initially as a side business.
That school grew to become the nationally accredited University of Antelope Valley. The university graduates more than 1,000 students a year, with programs ranging from master’s-level degrees to career-specific certificates. The university employs more than 100 people and has two campuses, an athletics program, and more than 30 academic programs and certifications. Marco and his wife decided to retire from the university and sold it in July 2022. They felt that the best move for the community was to bring investors with higher volumes of funds.
Marco is a recognized business leader in the Antelope Valley, earning the 2009 City of Lancaster’s Citizen of the Year Award. He and Sandra continually give back to the Antelope Valley community, supporting local charity and family shelter organizations, hosting community outreach events, and assisting local entrepreneurs with guidance and support.
Marco is the father of two wonderful children, Devion and Tiffany. He obtained a Master's in Education from the University of Hawaii.

Dr. Denisha Jones is the Executive Director of Defending the Early Years, an education justice advocacy and activist organization.
“Something has gone wrong that we've made kids ‘uncurious’ — from kindergarten to twelfth grade. And that's what the entire schooling is.”— Dr. Denisha Jones
Dr. Denisha Jones is the Executive Director of Defending the Early Years. She is a former kindergarten teacher and preschool director who has spent the past 20 years in teacher education. Denisha is an education justice advocate and activist working with various grassroots organizations to dismantle the neoliberal assault on public education. She is a part-time faculty member in the Art of Teaching program at Sarah Lawrence College and the School of Education at Howard University. Since 2017, she has served on the steering committee for the national Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action. Her first co-edited book, Black Lives Matter at School: An Uprising for Educational Justice, was published in December 2020 by Haymarket Books.
“Teacher Tom” Hobson is an early childhood educator, international speaker, education consultant, teacher of teachers, parent educator, and author. He is best known, however, for his namesake blog, Teacher Tom's Blog, where he has posted daily for over a decade, chronicling the life and times of his little preschool in the rain-soaked Pacific Northwest corner of the USA.
For nearly two decades, Teacher Tom was the sole employee of the Woodland Park Cooperative School, a parent-owned and operated school knit together by Teacher Tom's democratic, progressive play-based pedagogy. Teacher Tom came into teaching through the backdoor, so to speak, having enrolled his own child in a cooperative preschool, where he began working daily in his daughter's classroom as an assistant teacher under the tutelage of veteran educators — although he'll be the first to tell you that most of what he learned came from the children themselves. When it was time for his daughter to move on, he “stayed behind.”
Today, Teacher Tom shares his play-based pedagogy through online e-courses for early childhood educators; produces online early childhood conferences; consults with organizations about his "Family Schools" program; and inspires early-years audiences around the world (Greece, UK, Iceland, Australia, China, Vietnam, New Zealand, Canada, and across the US) both virtually and in-person with his engaging views on early childhood education, play, and pedagogy.
He was pressured by his blog readers into authoring his first book, aptly named Teacher Tom’s First Book, and is thrilled about the 2023 release of Teacher Tom’s Second Book.

Welcome to Making It! This weekly show explores the lives and stories of entrepreneurs as they share their unique perspectives on their success and the path to making it.Larissa Banting is a publicist, journalist, and conversion copywriter with more than 25 years of experience.
“My daughter is... a horse jumper. She’s competing in Guatemala next month [and] I’m going to be taking the week off to go with her.”— Larissa Banting
Larissa Banting is a publicist, journalist, and conversion copywriter with more than 25 years of experience. Her job? To get you featured and famous!
Words have always been her passion and her playmates from an early age, when she would create stories and a complete guidebook to the culture of Pookinland, a made-up land suspiciously similar to a mashup of various East European countries and Baltic States (her parents worked with ethnic groups). After winning a poetry contest in Grade 4, she knew writing was going to be a “thing” for her.
Fast forward to university, where she was the only undergraduate to have her research papers published in academic journals. A few twists and turns of fate down the road and she found herself penning a weekly dance column in the arts magazines SEE and Vue. One jeté later and she was working with Alberta Ballet in marketing and public relations, followed by the Arden Theatre, City of St. Albert, Northern Alberta International Children’s Festival, and a slew of television and film productions as a unit publicist — as well as one-off stints for Bombay Sapphire Gin.
In 2002, she left the wintry abyss of Edmonton for the sunnier climes of Costa Rica, where she opened the destination wedding planning firm Weddings Costa Rica, which quickly grew to be the largest such company in Central America. Putting her publicity skills into high gear, her clients’ weddings were the first south of Mexico to be featured in international wedding magazines, and she had segments on various media outlets, such as Martha Stewart Living Radio. All this media attention soon had her named to the A-List Top 30 Destination Wedding Planners in the World as well as one of the 25 Most Influential Wedding Planners in the World. All these features helped grow her firm to cross the seven-figure threshold in only four short years. She knows firsthand the power of PR and how quickly it can grow your brand (and your bank account).

Brynne Tillman is considered to be the LinkedIn Whisperer for her ability to effectively leverage it as a sales tool. She is the CEO of Social Sales Link and has been teaching Entrepreneurs, sales teams, and business leaders how to leverage LinkedIn for social selling for over a decade.
“...why it was fun was because I talked to people to learn about them and learn about what they liked. So I could serve them better, which ultimately increased my income. So sales has always been a quintessential part of my life.”– Brynne Tillman
Brynne Tillman is the LinkedIn Whisperer and CEO of Social Sales Link, and the author of The LinkedIn Sales Playbook, a Tactical Guide to Social Selling. For over a decade she has been teaching Entrepreneurs, sales teams, and business leaders how to leverage LinkedIn for social selling.
Brynne got her start in sales from a young age, eventually realizing she had both a knack and passion for it. Her formal introduction to sales began in 1990 when, as a bored inbound order-taker for a Fortune 1000 company, she began to ask callers questions about their transactions and why they were purchasing specific products. This technique proved so effective that by the age of 24, she was training an entire call center on how to evolve from order takers to a sales solutions team.
As a former sales trainer and personal producer, Brynne adopted all of the traditional sales techniques and adapted them to the new digital world, specifically through LinkedIn. She guides professionals to establish a thought leader and subject matter expert brand, find and engage the right targeted market, and leverage clients and networking partners for warm introductions to qualified buyers.

Tad Hargrave is a self-described hippie with a knack for marketing. He helps other hippies get more clients in ways that feel good to all involved, and he calls his decision to do pay-what-you-can the best thing he ever did for his business. Hosts Linda Claire Puig and Ari Iny talk with Tad about what can sound like a radical thing to do: allowing people to decide what they will pay you for your work. Tad shares real-world examples from his own business of what works well with this strategy...and what to avoid. In this episode, we discuss: Tad’s story of a workshop “gone wrong”—and the surprising offer strategy that emerged, earning him thousands in unexpected revenue without any selling at all * Why you do NOT have to choose between marketing that works and marketing that feels good * How to tweak and test your offer so that people actually want to pay more* for it * The most common misunderstanding and misapplication of pay-what-you-can (so you don’t dig yourself a financial grave). * And much more!
“Because they feel respected and not pushed, this natural generosity comes out and people just want to give and want to contribute.” —Tad Hargrave
Tad Hargrave is a hippie who developed a knack for marketing (and then learned to be a hippie again). He is a practitioner and proponent of “ethical marketing for uncertaintimes” and helps hippies get more clients in ways that feel good to all involved.

James Lam is the founder of LAM - Look Ahead Marketing. He helps heart-centered entrepreneurs discover their superpowers and then use those gifts to shape their businesses into change-making enterprises.
“They say practice makes perfect. There's no such thing as perfect; practice makes improvement.” – James Lam
James Lam may look like a mild-mannered marketer but he's really a creator of Entrepreneurial Superheroes, helping heart-centered entrepreneurs discover their superpowers and then use those gifts to shape their businesses into change-making enterprises.
After graduating top of the class from the University of Alberta with an MBA and an MEng, James became the Director of Marketing for the Cystic Fibrosis Society, starting his long love affair with the marketing world. He opened Learn Photography Company in 2012, teaching the joys of photography to hobbyists, growing it into a franchise across Canada with both in-person and on-line programs. To date, over 5,000 shutterbugs have graduated from one of Learn Photography's twelve courses.
In 2019, James' love of marketing saw him open LAM - Look Ahead Marketing, proudly using his last name as an acronym, empowering what had once been a source of ridicule from other children whilst growing up. This same spirit of owning your power is what guides LAM's offerings, including Superpowered Business Success, his signature program that takes freshman entrepreneurs from zero to hero sales in only twelve weeks.
When James isn't busy helping turn business folks into business superheroes, he can be found zipping around Calgary, Alberta on his motorcycle, sweating it out as a part-time fitness instructor or enjoying family life with his two children and wife, Jana, his best souvenir ever from his time living abroad Down Under.
James' aspiration is to support thousands of entrepreneurs and have his message become a household one.

Tad Hargrave is the founder of Marketing for Hippies. He teaches ethical marketing strategies to business owners, so they can get more clients without selling their souls. Find information on his upcoming pay-what-you-can workshop below.
“Part of making it has to do with reputation. And when you get to a certain point, there's a good buzz about you. And so it means I don't ever have to convince somebody to work with me.”– Tad Hargrave
Tad Hargrave is a hippy who developed a knack for marketing (and then learned to be a hippy again).
He spent his late teens being schooled in a mixed bag of approaches to sales and marketing—some manipulative and some not. When that career ended, he spent a decade unlearning and unpacking what he’d been through.
How had he been swept up in it? Why didn’t those approaches work as well as advertised? Were there ways of marketing that both worked better and felt better to all involved? It took him time but he began to find a better way to market.
By 2006, he had become one of the first, full-time ‘conscious business’ marketing coaches (for hippies) and created a business where he could share the understanding he had come to: Marketing could feel good. You didn’t have to choose between marketing that worked (butfelt awful) or marketing that felt good (but got you no clients).
Since 2001, he has been touring his marketing workshops around Canada, the United States, Europe, and online, bringing refreshing and unorthodox ideas to conscious entrepreneurs and green businesses that help them grow their organizations and businesses (without selling their souls). Instead of charging outrageous amounts, he started doing most of his events on a pay what you can basis. He is the author of sixteen books and workbooks on marketing.
