Gael Hannan and Shari Eberts interview Dr. Barbara Weinstein, a distinguished professor at CUNY and adjunct professor at NYU Langone Medical Center. Dr. Weinstein shares her recent research on the InnoCaption app, which provides real-time captions for phone calls, making them accessible to individuals with hearing loss.Dr. Weinstein highlights that many hearing professionals are not familiar with captioning apps like InnoCaption, despite their potential to greatly improve phone call experiences for hearing aid and cochlear implant users. Her research involved a comprehensive survey of InnoCaption users, focusing on both technological and psychosocial benefits. Key findings revealed that before using the app, users experienced high levels of frustration and anxiety during phone calls. However, after three months of using InnoCaption, participants reported increased phone usage, reduced listening effort, and improved emotional well-being. They felt more relaxed and confident, especially during important calls such as medical appointments.InnoCaption, which is free and funded by the FCC, offers both live stenographer and automated speech recognition options, enhancing accessibility at no cost to users. Dr. Weinstein emphasizes the importance of audiologists inquiring about their patients' phone call experiences and recommending tools like InnoCaption to improve their quality of life. For more details on the research, visit https://www.innocaption.com/white-paperBe sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for the latest episodes each week, and follow This Week in Hearing on LinkedIn and X (formerly Twitter): https://www.linkedin.com/company/this-week-in-hearing/https://twitter.com/WeekinHearing

This week, Dr. Victoria Sanchez of the University of South Florida, and Dr. Shannon Basham of Phonak, join host Amyn Amlani to discuss the ACHIEVE study, a multi-year randomized controlled trial examining the effects of best-practice hearing care interventions on cognitive decline in older adults. The study results found that for those at higher risk of cognitive decline, providing hearing aids and counseling slowed cognitive decline by 48% over 3 years compared to a control group. The hearing intervention utilized comprehensive audiological evaluations, evidence-based device fitting, and patient education and support. While additional analyses continue, these significant findings demonstrate the potential impact optimized hearing care can have on supporting long-term cognitive health. The panelists emphasize that complex research like ACHIEVE requires interdisciplinary expertise and collaboration. As the field increasingly focuses on the connections between hearing and cognition, audiologists will need to take a more holistic approach in managing patients while partnering closely with physicians, researchers and others. Resources like Phonak's upcoming ECHHO training program will help clinicians translate recent research on hearing and cognitive health into effective patient care and communication. While previous attempts to incorporate health sensors in earbuds faced challenges like comfort, battery drain, and a lack of compelling use cases, there are ongoing developments to overcome these issues. One company, MindMics, has developed technology that allows users to monitor heart rate and other health characteristics acoustically, using the ear canal as a microphone. Dr. Anna Barnacka, the founder and CEO of MindMics, explains that their technology utilizes sound waves generated by the body to provide insights into health, making it a non-invasive and promising method for health monitoring.

MindMics leverages the existing microphones in earbuds, including those used for active noise cancellation (ANC), to capture these sound waves below 20 Hz. This approach eliminates the need for additional sensors and ensures that users can simultaneously listen to audio while monitoring their health.

Falls are one of the costliest mishaps affecting older adults, and there is evidence suggesting a link between age-related hearing loss and falling. Dr. Laura Campos, a clinical audiologist at the University of Colorado, recently joined Brian Taylor to discuss her study's focus on hearing aid usage and the potential for reduced fall risk in older adults. The research revealed that individuals with hearing loss face a 2.4 times higher risk of experiencing falls compared to their normal-hearing counterparts. Dr. Campos and her team investigated whether hearing aid use could mitigate this risk.

The study findings demonstrated that individuals who consistently wore hearing aids, particularly for at least four hours a day, exhibited a significantly lower likelihood of experiencing falls. While the study couldn't establish causality, it underscored a strong association between consistent hearing aid usage and reduced fall risk. Dr. Campos emphasized that incorporating discussions about the potential link between hearing loss, cognitive decline, and falls into clinical practice could offer valuable insights for clinicians. She also highlighted the need for further research to uncover the underlying mechanisms driving these associations and the potential for using objective outcome measures to track the impact of hearing aid usage on fall risk over time.

This week, Brian Taylor welcomes Professor Christina Roup from The Ohio State University to discuss adults with normal audiograms and self-reported hearing difficulty. The prevalence of this condition is estimated to be around 12-15% in younger and middle-aged adults, with a higher prevalence in older age groups and those with a history of traumatic brain injury.

Dr. Rouf reviews some of the latest research on this topic and how it can inform clinicians who work with this population. She also presents insights from her research, where she found that amplification with mild gain hearing aids significantly improved speech-in-noise performance for adults with normal audiograms and self-reported hearing difficulties.

She encourages clinicians to listen to their patients' complaints and take them seriously, using speech-in-noise tests as a routine part of their clinical battery to provide appropriate treatment options.

This week, Gael Hannan sits down with Tiffany Storrs, a trilingual actress, advocate, and author of the memoir "Adaptability." She shares her transformation from pain to purpose through faith and determination and describes her experience with sudden hearing loss and two hearing implant surgeries.

Tiffany's hearing loss struck suddenly after giving birth, and coming to terms with her new reality was a process that took time. Sadly, her friends and family initially doubted her condition, causing her deep pain. However, Tiffany used their skepticism as fuel to prove to herself the power of adaptability. She encourages others to view challenges as "wild cards" and discover the hidden blessings within them.

Through her hearing loss journey, Tiffany has gained purpose and perspective, considering it a victory rather than a setback. Both Tiffany and Gael Hannan share a mission to support the hearing loss community by sharing their stories and practical tools for everyday living. Tiffany's memoir, "Adaptability," is available on Amazon, and she seeks to reach as many people as possible to offer guidance and support on their own hearing loss journeys.

Originally presented at the 2023 Future of Hearing Healthcare Conference, Dr. Jacque Scholl, Executive Director & Head of Audiology for Soundwrx and Head of Pediatrics for Tuned, discusses the motivation behind and solution for expanding a telehealth platform for pediatrics.

Despite several known barriers to learning in schools, such as hearing loss and mental health issues, no state screens for all of them. This leads to a failure in identifying and addressing these barriers early, hindering children's academic success. Outdated screening methods and insufficient training further contribute to the problem. Dr. Scholl emphasized the urgent need for improved screening and intervention programs to support children with hearing loss and auditory processing disorders in schools.

It is widely believed that only 5% of the more than 2 million adults who are potential candidates for cochlear implant technology have been treated. There are several reasons for this low uptake rate, including the limited number of audiologists and clinics who work with cochlear implants. In addition, these limited resources create an aftercare burden, as many CI recipients must travel long distances for a high number of in-person appointments. Our guest, Dr. Sandra Porps, discusses a recent study that demonstrates remote aftercare is not only popular among adult CI recipients, but improves outcomes. Win Cramer, CEO of JLab, a growing top-5 headphone brand globally, joins host Andrew Bellavia to discuss their hearing health products launched at CES in January. JLab is the first major consumer audio brand to focus on hearing loss prevention and treatment. Given their sheer size and popularity with a younger demographic than that of traditional hearing aid companies, JLab’s entry into the hearing space has the potential to make a big impact.JLab's focus on hearing care started about 10 years ago when Cramer's daughter needed headphones for school, and he discovered the lack of hearing protection standards for children. As a result, JLab developed a kids' headphone which was well-received by the market. From this beginning JLab developed the suite of initiatives announced at CES including a line of hearing protection products for adults and children, commitment to include an unsafe listening alert in all new products, and two new OTC hearing aids at consumer price points to be released over the course of the year.In this episode Cramer shares more on JLab’s journey into the hearing space, offers details on their design thinking as they developed hearing devices for the mass-market, and shares his vision for the future as hearing devices and earphones converge.Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for the latest episodes each week, and follow This Week in Hearing on LinkedIn and Twitter: https://www.linkedin.com/company/this-week-in-hearing/https://twitter.com/WeekinHearingAudio podcast can be found on all major platforms, including Apple & Spotify: https://anchor.fm/thisweekinhearing

Dr. Michael Valente returns to make that case that audiologists should consider introducing remote microphones and TV listening devices routinely for their hearing aid patients as add-on accessories. Regular use of remote mics and TV listening devices help address the biggest complaints by hearing aid users, in spite of being well fitting with their devices - difficulty hearing in noise and difficulty hearing at a distance.

In the presentation Dr. Valente reviews some of the research surrounding remote microphones, even evidence that shows how remote mics can provide a patient with hearing loss when listening in noise, the ability to hear better than a person with normal hearing! He also shares how audiologists can counsel patients, reluctant to invest money to try hearing aids, to convert Air Pod Pro2’s into hearing aids and add an inexpensive Bluetooth adapter ($80) to their TV to achieve a very effective TV streamer.

In this episode, acclaimed audio engineer, Alexander Goldin tells us about the new BeHear SMARTO non-custom amplifier and how it broadens the appeal of amplification devices to those in your community -- people who maybe cannot wear traditional hearing aids but nevertheless need help.

Nearly four out of 10 people Americans will suffer from vertigo at some point in their lives. The sensation that vertigo causes – that you or your environment are moving or spinning can be debilitating and disrupt everyday life – causing people to suffer from dangerous falls, hearing loss, excruciating migraines, and miss work and personal activities.

In a breakthrough study, the precision genomics research team at Intermountain Healthcare and deCODE Genetics have discovered the genetic link to vertigo – specifically the six genes that cause it.

These findings offer new hope to the more than 133 million Americans suffering from vertigo each year. The Intermountain Precision Genomics team, led by Dr. Lincoln Nadauld, says the discovery can already assist physicians in determining whether a patient who comes to the emergency room with cardiac-like symptoms is suffering from heart issues or vertigo and more broadly provides a new roadmap for pharmaceutical companies to develop drugs and therapies for actively treating patients with vertigo.

The discovery of the genetic link to vertigo study is part of the larger, groundbreaking HerediGene Population Study, that Intermountain and deCode are conducting. The study, which is the largest DNA collection effort ever undertaken of a single population in the U.S., is gathering genetic samples from 500,000 participating patients in Intermountain’s service area in the Mountain West.

The practice of audiology is rapidly changing. It’s simply not enough to passively wait in your clinic for patients to show up looking for help; audiologists must become actively involved in providing care in places beyond the four walls of their clinic.

In this week's technology spotlight, Dr. Bob Traynor speaks with Abhita Batra, CEO and Director of Otomagnetics. The company, a University of Maryland College Park spin-out, is developing a non-invasive method to deliver drugs and other therapeutic payloads to inner and middle ear compartments, to the eye, and into the skin.

The inner ear is behind the blood-labyrinth barrier – vessels that supply blood to the inner ear have walls that are impermeable to most drug molecules, and thus it is a challenge to deliver therapy to treat inner ear diseases.  Otomagnetics is developing and commercializing a magnetic injection delivery system that will be able to  safely, effectively, and non-invasively deliver therapy to targets in the body that are currently not effectively reached by the standards-of-care, or that may otherwise require surgery to reach.

In recent surveys, up to 60% of hearables users said they would find conversational enhancement desirable. Such large percentages mean people who do not measure as having hearing loss also wish to hear others better in noisy situations.

Meeting this need calls for AI-based speech enhancement, but until the present time it has not been possible to incorporate effective, low-latency algorithms directly into hearables. Then came twin announcements from Chatable and Knowles describing that such a system has been developed for Knowles' AISonic audio processor chip and incorporated into their new TWS developers platform.

In this segment, Dave Kemp discusses the implications of this development with Giles Tongue, CEO of Chatable, and Andy Bellavia, Director of Market Development for Knowles Corp. They describe how their companies' partnership revolutionizes transparency mode in hearables to enhance hearing for everyone, and how such a system could further improve understanding in noise when incorporated into hearing aids. They also share how other features of the TWS developers kit enable hearables designers to meet popular use cases such as premium sound, hands-free voice assistant access, and more. It all adds up to a future where hearables become an increasingly useful tool in daily life.
