Welcome to The DEAD PHISHermen podcast, where two guys talk about two bands: The Grateful Dead and Phish. As each episode covers a topic or theme, we break down live shows and songs from each band exploring their history, importance, and continued influence on how we listen to music today.
IN this episode, we travel over the pond to Europe to explore Phish's 97 tours and the Grateful Dead's "last adventure" in 81. Both bands shined when they played outside the US, and the 97 and 81 tours are no exception. The music was fantastic, and the history we uncovered was incredible. In Episode 11 of The Dead PHISHermen, we try to find four songs from the Grateful Dead and Phish that embody the spirit of Spring, Summer, Winter, and Fall. We both found this to be fun but challenging. I think each of us heard and felt something new in the songs we have loved for years.

This performance just solidifies the old saying, "NEVER MISS A SUNDAY SHOW!" We also discuss Scott's 5 rules for having a ball at a Phish show. The beach is always a great place to relax, unwind, and enjoy the music of The Grateful Dead and Phish. In Episode, 6 we highlight a Dead show from 1971 where the boys were feeling some "Good Vibrations" and played alongside The Beach Boys at the Fillmore East. Scott takes us to Virginia Beach where Phish, in 1998, brought the crowd to a frenzy with a Terrapin Station encore that is a beautiful and touching tribute to the late Jerry Garcia.
What better way to enjoy the warmth of Summer than with the sound of horns? The Grateful Dead and Phish have collaborated with many talented artists, but it was something about the sound of brass that brought the best out in both bands.
In this episode we are highlighting Branford Marsalis's sit-ins with the Grateful Dead in the 90's and Giant Country Horns playing with Phish at a great show on 7/21/1991.

May is the month when colleges and universities across the country hold commencement ceremonies. Even though Scott and I went to different colleges in NC, we still remember embracing the music of the Grateful Dead and Phish for the first time during that experience. So, it made perfect sense for our theme this month to be college shows. In this episode, we explore a show each band played on a NC campus: The Grateful Dead on 9/23/1976 in Cameron Indoor Stadium at Duke University and Phish on 12/16/1999 in Reynolds Coliseum at NC State University.

Episode 3: Part 1-First Shows at Hampton Coliseum The "Mother-Ship" was always ready to take off when these two bands came to Hampton, VA. We continue our theme of "Firsts" by looking at the first time the Grateful Dead played the Hampton Coliseum on 5/4/1984 and PHISH on 11/25/1995.
Episode 2-First Shows at Madison Square Garden Madison Square Garden hosted the first of 52 sold out shows of the Grateful Dead on 1/7/1979. PHISH would make their mark on the Garden on 12/30/1994, and 60 shows later they continue to rock the Big Apple. Listen as we breakdown these two great shows and discuss how this venue always seems to bring out the best of both bands.
