❤️ INTRODUCING THE RAISE CHANGE MAKERS JOURNEY ✨️🌎

This is not your usual eco/green type of community where you’d learn practical tips and do’s and don’ts –

It is much more than that. It is much more than sharing knowledge about sustainability.

It is also about raising children using a parenting philosophy that is scientifically proven, time tested and grows us into the best version of ourselves as Parents and Caregivers.

It is about self-care, self-love and being a whole human.

It is about connection to ourselves, connection to our children, the kind of mindfulness we need within before we could think about being mindful about our planet and the environment.

It all starts within us, breaking those inner barriers so that our children grow up naturally seeing and experiencing the connection to the planet and humanity.

It is a safe space to support conscious, high-quality bonding between parents and children while raising little change makers who care about all life on Earth.

Charlotte from @enrichingenvironments and Ivana @ivybogbu have teamed up to create a comprehensive guide that combines our expertise, ensuring you have the knowledge and tools to raise future change makers who are kind to themselves, others, and the environment.

For our Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass this evening on Sustainable Families. I was joined by the wonderful @ivyogbu to dive into the positive changes we can all make for a more sustainable future for us all. Clarity, Practicality and a Call to Action. This is what we need to be able to discuss, expand and move forward with the complex topic of Sustainability. We opened our hearts and cleared our minds to have a shift in the way we FEEL about sustainability, and how this can translate to simple, tangible daily actions that become part of the fabric of our family. We join hands as we raise this next generation of capable, compassionate, contributors.

"Sustainable development is about making sure that we can meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It's not just about the environment, although the environment is a big part of it. Sustainable development also involves economic and social factors."

Thank you for joining me @ivyogbu.

During this Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass on Instagram Live this evening we looked at how we should we respond whenour children are being irrational, unreasonable and impossible.

🤔 Some of the 'issues' that we face with our children can be attributed to the mismatch that occurs between our expectations, and their immaturity, both in age and in brain development.

😅 Moments of dysregulation (for our children and for ourselves) are when the thinking brain goes 'offline'.

❤️ As our child, learns, grows and develops in their impulse control (with our support), can we too learn to ride the waves of their emotional expression and not get caught up in it?

This was a great question from a client recently; and a common one too, a Montessori Education isn't accessible to everyone (yet), logistically, financially, physically, so how can we live by these beautiful values even if they are not being echoed at school?

In this session we dove deep into 3 ways we can cultivate a Montessori mindset and live a Montessori way of life; regardless of the schooling system that our child is in.

1)’Follow the child’, follow their natural development, nurture their uniqueness.

2) Nurturing autonomy, preparing a simple, ordered and accessible home, treading lightly on our beautiful planet, the interdependence of all things, deep respect of self and others.

3) The Spiritual Preparation of the Adult - nurturing ourselves, understanding ourselves, healing ourselves so we can gift all of this to our children.

Thank you for joining me for this Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass 💖

I have been asked so many questions about screentime recently so this is an important topic to cover.

We looked at our relationship with screens and technology and how that is our starting point from which we see our child's relationship with screens.

We discussed different techniques to mould our homes into being less screen focussed, setting our intentions around technology and its place in our lives, and looked at our own self-care around screens.

Monitoring our usage and observing ourselves before taking any action with our children 😅😊

Hope that this serves you in some way, thank you for joining!

Thank you for joining me for Welcoming a new sibling 🤩

Joyous, magical, and calling for immense reserves of understanding and multitasking; in this Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass we discussed supporting the transition that takes place (for adults and older children) when there is a new addition to our household.

❤️ Validation of older children's feelings of frustration and jealousy .

❤️ Cultivating deep respect between siblings through not forcing affection or acceptance in the early days and weeks.

❤️ Preparing the home so that baby can be included in all areas of the home life (not trying to 'keep them apart') from older siblings.

❤️ The changes we undergo when adapting from 1 to 2 children and our inner work in adapting to this change.

During this Masterclass we discussed how food preparation and cooking with children from the Early Years and throughout the Elementary years builds resilience for a child by developing a friendly relationship with error.  This is so crucial because making mistakes, learning and trying again is a natural part of being human - one which is removed from a mainstream educational experience.  The question we asked ourselves as the session came to an end was: in what ways are we cultivating a friendliness towards error in our home?

Embodied Parenting, what it is and why it's important: Following on from my recent talk at the Parenthood UnConference in Abu Dhabi, in this Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass we dove into Embodied Parenting and what this means for us as Parents and Educators.

We looked at:

✓ What Embodied Parenting is and how it strengthens relationships with our children.

✓ How understanding ourselves helps us to connect more deeply with our children.

✓ The five gifts of Embodied Parenting and Embodied Educating where children reflect back to us our learning, our growth, our gifts.

In February 2023 I will be launching a deep-dive 7 month Embodied Parenting- Embodied Educating Mentoring Programme! 🥰✨️ This Programme has the potential to transform your relationship with yourself and your inner child, nourish and nurture your parent-child dynamic and cultivate deep connections with the children in your nursery or classroom. More information to follow shortly about this pioneering Mentoring Programme 😀.

I seek to dedicate 25% of the spaces on this Programme to scholarship students for Parents and Educators from BIPOC Communities. If you know, or someone you know would like to apply for a scholarship please share this Post with them. 🙏🏼 DM me for more details. ❤️

Physical effort is really important for young children and in this week's Masterclass we discussed why it is so important and how we can facilitate this at home:

✔ Why young children love and NEED real, hard work like this: pushing, pulling, lifting, dragging things that are often "too heavy" for them. (panting and being out of breath is good!)

✔ The importance of this work for our child's development.

✔ How we can provide opportunities for these experiences easily and inexpensively at home.

✔ What size/shape of objects are the most satisfying for them to manoeuvre with.

💚 What is different about the Montessori approach to babies, which begins from learning about the Human Tendencies. ❤️ Offering freedom of movement from the very first days of life. (sounds crazy right?!). 💛 The beauty of offering a diminished environment to allow a baby to unfold in alignment with their natural development. 💗 How we can move from a position of wanting to contain babies, to respecting them, and seeing how capable they are. 🧡 When we observe to meet them where they are, then we can follow their natural path of development joyfully.

Thank you for being here! In this Live we explored this brilliant follower question: How can I hold boundaries and parent gently? This question took us down many paths and many trains of thought. We had some great engagement from viewers and it really was a deep dive into: ✓Gentle parenting ✓Connection as our guiding light in the adult/child relationship. ✓How consistency, predictability and routine/rhythm create a sense of safety. ✓How and why young children push against our boundaries. ✓Placing ourself in our child's shoes and tending to our own inner child. ✓How our own wounds will trigger unwanted reactions from us in the heat of the moment. ✓The "energy" and spaciousness that we are seeking to create around our parenting and our interactions with our child. During this session we discussed non-violent communication, how, and why we practise it.

How learning this language of life improves communication, invites us into listening and speaking from the heart, and being with each other with presence and understanding

Giraffes have the largest hearts of any land animals, so non-violent communication for children calls upon them (and us) to step into being as big-hearted as giraffes. ❤️🦒

We discussed examples of bringing non-violent communication into our homes and Communities as the foundation of the adult-child relationship; expressing needs and listening to others needs.

I highly recommend the book by Marshall B Rosenberg - Non Violent Communication, a language of life. https://a.co/d/hGMezmW

Non-violent communication offers a level of consciousness whereby people feel seen and heard; restoring care and connection in our families, classrooms, groups and communities. 🙏🏽😍

In this week's Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass we discussed interrupting.

One of my clients has asked me for guidance in supporting children with interruptions (her children are 10, 9 and 6).

In this session we covered

  • What are realistic and unrealistic expectations and how we can tailor them in alignment with our child's age and developmental stage
  • Tips that can support our children in moving towards fewer interruptions (as they develop and mature).
  • Trust that with role modelling, space and time that our children will find their way.
  • Most importantly, making time and space so our childrens' voices are valued and heard as much as the adults' voices in our homes, schools and communities.

Thank you all for joining me for this Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass:

During this session we found the magic in non-correction:

Recognising that our child needs to experience the world in their own time, in their own way, a way that follows their natural development is a cornerstone of Montessori philosophy.

This 'recognising' extends to not correcting our child when they get something 'wrong'.

It can almost be a reflex action for us, this impulse to correct them, and yet, it is so rewarding when we don't, and we give them the freedom to work things out themselves.

We discussed how hard it can be, and feel very uncomfortable) to NOT correct when our child wears their shoes on opposite feet, wears their T shirt back to front or writes letters/numbers back to front or upside down.

Our conditioning, our own friendliness with error and cultural norms all contribute to how we feel and react when our urge is to correct.

Our invitation is to be there and witness, really see what our child has accomplished in the moment. When our children are given space and time to unfold they are immensely powerful .

Not correcting asks us to trust that "when the child is ready she will do it properly".

It is important for us to honour their path, their learning journey, and their 'mistakes'.

As always, the energy that we bring to any interaction with our children is more potent that finding the right words/script to say. A warm smile and noticing our child’s body language is open, joyful and proud when they have achieved something is enough.

Let me know that you took from this session, and I look forward to seeing you

❤ Intentional Parenting: the power of rhythm and ritual 🥰

In this week's Top Tip Tuesday's Masterclass we discussed how something as simple as a family whiteboard can support the consistency, predictability and routine that every child needs . We had some beautiful embodiment pieces, feeling into our intention, our resistance when in a power struggle with our child, and visualising how we want to feel in our parenting.

Here is what we covered during our Masterclass:

🌼 This whiteboard is our new thing: myself, Olivia and Harry each writing on there what we'd like to do each day, what things we already have planned, what our commitments are.

🌿 Each of us have a voice, each of us can take ownership of our responsibilities (at a developmentally appropriate level), we decide between the three of us what is possible and what is not possible.

🌺 It's not achievable to be able to meet everyone's needs every day; but the power in this approach is that everyone gets to be seen and heard, everyone's voice matters.

🍁 For Elementary aged children, connection collaboration and cooperation is cultivated when they are part of decision-making processes, their strong sense of justice and need for fairness dictates this.

💫 They will resist arbitrary decisions, rules and boundaries - our role is involve them in family life, the logistics, the planning, what we consider to be the "boring stuff".

🕸 They are often more creative and more resourceful in problem-solving and cooperation as they don't have the decades of bad habits that we do 😝, they are able to look upon things with fresh eyes.

😚 We can cultivate autonomy, empathy, collaboration, responsibility and a sense of agency just from something as simple as a daily whiteboard!

This week we covered rudeness, sass, talking back, disrespect, and looked at the following areas:

❤ Where does it come from?

❤ Where do I draw the line between my child's healthy self-expression and disrespect?

❤ How do find my calm?

❤ Within each segment is an invitation into a  embodiment practice of intention setting, identifying feelings within the body and visualising release and new outcomes.

Episode 87: The Montessori Sensitive Periods - Small objects/details - Part 6 of a 6 part Series:

What a fun way to end our Ramadan series on the Sensitive Periods!

This evening we focussed on the Sensitivity to Small Objects and discussed:

💕 Why it’s such a fun stage (as we have the opportunity to experience the joy and wonder of the world through the eyes of a young child).

😊 Why it’s really important for us to immerse ourselves in this stage, be with them in the moment, cultivate their curiosity, slow down for their exploration.

🐜How and why a young child can focus on an ant for what seems like hours!

🤓 What skills they are developing and honing as they spot, pick up and explore those tiny things that they find.

🤹🏼 Balancing our need to keep them safe whilst providing opportunities for them to fulfil this drive; exploring small objects is an important part of the child's work at this age!

Parts 1 - 5 of the Sensitive Period Series are Order (Episode 82) Movement (Episode 83), Language (Episode 84), Social Aspects (Episode 85), and Refinement of the Senses (Episode 86) andare all available here on IGTV with captions, YouTube, Spotify and ITunes.

In Part 5 of our 6 part series on the Sensitive Periods we covered Refinement of the Senses, from 0-5 years old.

A child learns through all five of their senses in the early years; they are naturally drawn to and fascinated by experiences in taste, smell, touch, sounds and weight.

How we can offer multi-sensorial first hand experiences as part of daily life (at home, it's not expensive or complicated!).

How setting our intention to slow down and gently draw attention to the above experiences with our child can support them; it's simple yet really effective. 😍

Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Sensitive Period Series are Order (Episode 82) Movement (Episode 83), Language (Episode 84) and Social Aspects (Episode 85), and are all available here on IGTV with captions, YouTube, Spotify and ITunes.

The Montessori Sensitive Periods - The Social Aspects of Life - this week for our Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live we discussed the Sensitive Period that develops from around 2 years onwards, being sociable.

We looked at how the play prior to this point is solitary or parallel, and the shift that occurs when children seek to actively engage others in play.

Why this stage is important, and how we can support our child whilst they balance their need for socialising whilst giving them the tools they need to be part of a Community.

How we can cultivate respect of others, empathy and caring during this crucial time when

We had a great question about how to support children who have picked up inappropriate language and are using it to get a reaction from adults.

Part 5 of our 6 part series on the Montessori Sensitive Periods will be on the ‘Refinement of the Senses’ next Tuesday 3rd May at 8:30pm GST/

In the third episode in our #ramadan2022 special series on the Montessori Sensitive Periods, we focussed on language.

Dr Montessori identified the period from birth to six years as a critical time in the development of language.

During this IGLIVE session we explored:

  • How language essentially conveys joy, the words of joy we use in a child’s life are more important than the words of correction.

  • From gurgling 😍 to swearing 😬 , how language develops during the early years from utero to age 6.

  • how to enrich your child's language and communication learning experience, through the richness of vocabulary that you use.

  • The misunderstood toddler years, how a lack of ability to verbalise is the main reason for tantrums and physical behaviour in toddlers.

  • multilingual households. One person, one language is the recommended approach to cultivate multilingualism.

We had some great audience questions too - thank you so much for joining me!

In the second episode in our six part series on the Montessori Sensitive Periods, we focus on movement.

Essentially, movement is the foundation for all development. The young child's need for movement is critical, from birth!

And coincidentally arguably the most difficult Sensitive Period to follow in Western society as the majority of "stuff" for babies and young children is designed to limit their movement (for our convenience) rather than facilitate and encourage it!

During this Live we discussed:

✓ What freedom of movement means in the early years

✓ Why it's important

✓ How we can facilitate it

The first in my six part IGLives on the Sensitive Periods for #ramadan2022 - we begin with sense of order. 🥰

The Sensitive Periods are one of the lynchpins of Montessori philosophy that help us to understand young children, their needs within the early years, and thus how we can support them.

For this year's #ramadanchallenge I am excited to be running Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live from Tuesday 5th April to Tuesday 10th May as a six part series focussing on these "windows of opportunity".

Here in Part 1 we covered:

💗 The Sensitive Periods, what they are and how they are relevant to understanding children.

😅 Sense of order - what does it mean in real life?! How it is important for developing internal order, how order supports sequencing (foundation for mathematics). How a strong sense of order can mean immaculately made beds, folded laundry and neatly lined up shoes!

😊 How an intense period of sense of order, coupled with developing language skills in a toddler can manifest as physical behaviour such as hitting, pushing and biting.

💕 How a strong sense of order can be totally misinterpreted by adults as a child being spoilt or bratty.

✨ The many ways in which we can support and nurture our child during this Sensitive Period.

Sandtimers are essential for life with a Toddler (and older children too!) For Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live this week I talked through how to use sandtimers:

Setting loving boundaries - 'you can swing for ten minutes, and once the sand is finished it's time to give this other little girl a turn'.

Ease transitions - 'in five minutes, once the sand is finished we are going to put on our shoes and jump in the car'.

Defer wishes. 'I'm going to be five minutes preparing supper, when the sand is finished I'll come and read with you.'

It's simple to implement, respectful (as it meets your child where they are) and effective.

They support a young child's need for consistency, predictability and routine in their life.

*I still use them with my 5 & 7 year olds, so it's not too late if you are past the toddler stage, and I included lots of different examples in the Live above.

For Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live this week we talked about Creativity in the young child; how it develops, why it's important and how (and why) to offer child-led opportunities for creativity.

✨ Creative expression is an important part of self-expression for the young child.

💞 Creativity for the young child is process driven (not outcome driven), so they are creative for the experience, not with the purpose of creating an end product.

☀️ There are lots of fine motor skills used in creativity and this all supports our child's path to writing.

For this week's Top Tip Tuesday we discussed Toilet Learning; usually approached in Western culture with fear and dread, or with a controlling 'the child must not have an accident' mindset.

We had a ton of fab questions from viewers and covered the following points:

😍 In the Montessori way, toilet learning is seen as a natural developmental stage, much like crawling or walking.

✨ We provide the environment, provide opportunities and the child guides their own learning at their own pace.

😻 Less stress, no pressure on child or parent and lots of opportunities for learning and connecting together.

My 90 minute Toilet Learning Online Workshop will be launched in late March so get in touch if you'd like to be put on the waiting list for that.

Fostering an environment of respect, non-competition and peaceful resolution. ❤️

In the second of our special two part series on Sibling Dynamics, this week we focussed on conflict resolution.

During this session we covered the following:

😊 When/if to intervene. (take a deep breath, recognise what emotions we are bringing to this dynamic between our children).

🤔 How to intervene. (listen more, talk less 😅 - cultivating problem solving skills and emotional intelligence).

🎈 How to handle proclamations such as "I hate the baby" or "I wish I didn't have a sister". (offering empathy, validation and compassion).

💝 How to create an environment that cultivates patience and understanding from the start; whilst honouring the individuality and needs of all children in the family.

Part 1 of the Sibling Dynamics series was on Tuesday 8th February, the recording can be found here on IGTV (with captions), on YouTube, Spotify and ITunes.

Developing a deep bond between our children is one of the most rewarding and sometimes tricky to navigate areas in parenting.

During this Instagram Live we talked about nurturing the precious sibling bond from the start; from the language we use and the support we offer to each child as they navigate their place within the family.

We focussed on three key areas:

1) Not forcing siblings to 'share'.

2) Nurturing non-competition by not comparing one to another.

3) Highlighting to each sibling the importance they have in the other sibling's life. For example for a newborn and a toddler, we draw to the toddler's attention that baby is always watching and listening to them.🤩

We looked at how Montessori principles underpin the values of mutual respect and understanding, and offer a framework for parents that can be beautifully applied in the home environment.

Part 2 of this special 2 part series on Sibling Bonds will be focussed on managing sibling conflict and will be on Tuesday 22nd February at 8:30pm GST.

Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live last night on physical behaviour in toddlers.

It's normal, it happens! It is our response to this normal Toddler occurrence that is important ❤️🌟

Three years ago I had a biter and a hitter! It was tough at the time, playdates were stressful, my child wasn't coping and the other children involved were upset 😞

In this Live we'll discuss :

Why it happens, why it's normal (brain development, impulse control and language/communication skills)

How to support your child (not blame or shame them).

The hitter/biter is out of control when they do those things; it is a very stressful/scary place for a little person to be in.

It passes! Being on the other side of hitting/biting.

😍 How our empathy and support during these stressful times help to develop emotional regulation in our child.

During this Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live we focussed on the value of play and playfulness for fostering connection and cooperation with our children.

We discussed the following key points:

👣 All play is valuable, vital in fact, children learn through play in the early years.

✨ Amongst many other benefits, children practise their social skills, process their emotions, problem solve, and have fun - all in the name of play. 😍 Really playing with our children fully engaging in fun, nonsense and often silly behaviour is healing, connecting and joyful.

🙈 For the most part, parenting should be us enjoying spending time with our children, absorbing their uninhibited joy for life and their limitless capacity for fun and mischief.

💖 Play and playfulness as a beautiful way to connect to our Toddlers (and all our children!), whilst supporting collaboration. Playfulness dissolves power struggles and helps us move through tricky moments in the day with a greater ease (and less stress!). We become detectives to find out what type of playfulness is most effective with our child (silly, walk, voices, dances etc).

This week on Top Tip Tuesday we dove

deep into why making young children share isn't appropriate and how we can support them in this.

We covered:

💕Understanding why an adult’s view of sharing is inappropriate for young children.

🌻Creating a supportive home environment that allows qualities such as generosity and kindness to flourish.

🌸Moving away from shaming or correcting an older child when they don’t feel like sharing.

☺️Trusting that our children's innate goodness will unfold in time.

During this IG Live we discussed the curriculum for our forthcoming Montessori Nanny Training Programme:

Session 1: Sunday 20th February - 2:30 - 4:30pm Dubai time

✓ Brief introduction to the Montessori approach and the value it offers to children of all cultures around the world.

✓ Child development needs in the context of Montessori (movement, free exploration, respectful communication).

✓ Guidance on respectful communication. Supporting caregivers in guiding children in empowering ways. (alternatives to good girl, naughty girl, threats, etc).

✓ Guidance in respectful interaction (holding by the hand rather than the wrist or arm, respectful caregiving in diapering, honouring a child’s body boundaries, getting down to their level, not interrupting/interfering with their work or play).

Session 2: Sunday 20th March- 2:30 - 4:30pm Dubai time

✓ Meals - eating - snacking. Supporting children in healthy eating habits from an early age, developing fine motor skills, hand/eye coordination and concentration through self-feeding and food preparation (even with babies!). Developing a love a good food and the community of a shared family meal.

✓ Giving children the freedom and space they need to move, play and explore. How to support their curiosity whilst keeping them safe.

✓ A simple guide on establishing a daily rhythm, and preparing the home environment in a way that promotes autonomy, exploration and joy!

✓ Homework and reflections for Nannies to encourage the new skills and principles learnt to become part of daily home life.

✓ Printable checksheets to display at home to support the whole family in keeping on track!

Here's what other families have said about the impact this Programme had for them:

💗"Miranda has so embraced the Montessori philosophy since coming to the course on the weekend, it's been remarkable! You are a magician!" (Kate-Dubai)

❣️"I’m so happy we sent Liza! She came home so happy, enthusiastic, informed and full of ideas for some changes we can make in our home. I can already tell you covered many things I was trying to explain and muddle my way through, and she really “gets” it. I know she is intelligent and passionate about childcare, but honestly I am relieved that you have empowered her with the knowledge about Montessori, and she seems genuinely “sold” on it, not just “doing what I say”. Really see a difference in level of engagement and her confidence with Montessori ideas and it’s only day one! Thanks Charlotte: will be recommending to all my Monti-interested friends! During this session I talked through the main topics of the the forthcoming Programme and how beautifully Montessori aligns with Conscious Parenting and vice versa.

💞 Montessori Conscious Parenting offers us the opportunity to see our children as our teachers, not the other way round.

☀️ Montessori Conscious Parenting invites us to speak, to think and to act in a different way, to ourselves, to our children, and all those we come into contact with, following the three key Montessori principles of respecting ourselves, others and the environment.

🌍 Montessori offers us the gift of being able to contribute to a more peaceful and harmonious world.

🌺 With a focus on connection, simplicity and healing; we seek to remove any barriers that we have to fully seeing and accepting our children as they are, not how we want them to be.

💝 Within this process of accepting the lessons that our children are here to teach us, we have the opportunity for immense growth and transformation, healing generational patterns of hurt.

This week's Top Tip Tuesday was on how to enjoy the holiday season without becoming frazzled and fed up! 🎄✨

❣️ We looked at how we can approach Christmas (or any other festival) in a way that allows each family member a little, space, time or rhythm (whatever they need according to their age!) to enjoy this busy and sometimes overstimulating time, in fullness.

We talked about:

🎊 Preparing our child in advance for travelling to other's houses or receiving guests, what they can expect from Great Uncle Alfred with the very loud voice😉

🤩 Maintaining rhythm and ritual that provide consistency throughout the season even when away from home or with other family members.

😘'Translating' for our child and the new adults for those awkward moments where a relative may have an expectation of behaviour from your child that they are not ready for.

🎉 Explaining our parenting approach to others in a way that is non-judgmental and easy to understand.

Preparing ourselves with our partner by setting our intention of our hopes for the holidays and how our child can be best supported.

For Top Tip Tuesday this week we spoke about the holiday season! Inspired by our conversation on the Montessori Show last Friday with @jeannemariepaynel and @themontessorinotebook; this week for Top Tip Tuesday let's discuss simple holiday traditions that we can start with our children from the early years.

We discussed Santa, do we pretend he's real, do we say he's not?

How do we maintain the magic of Santa whilst staying aligned with our principles of being honest with our children?

I feel that we can really get ourselves unnecessarily tied up in knots about the 'right' thing to say about Santa. 🤦‍♀️

The Christmas season is a multi sensory experience for us all, we can enjoy the magic of the sights, sounds and smells for what it is in the moment. If we meet our child where they are, at their level of understanding then we won't go far wrong.💖

In this session we discussed an approach we can take to handle difficult questions to ensure that our interactions stay child-led.

(i.e we don't overwhelm them with too much information the first time they ask a question!) and we take things step by step, answering only the question that they have asked - then stop and let them come to us with a follow up, which may be minutes, days or hours later).

Always be guided by the child, moment by moment, listen to what question they are actually ask them and answer that exact question as simply and truthfully as you can.

It's also fine (and encouraged) to admit when we don't know an answer to their question, suggest doing research together to find out answers, or say we need time to think!

We had some great questions from the audience which added different perspectives too - it was really useful.

During this session we focused on three main areas in order to understand and best support our boys:

  • expressing emotions

  • aggression

  • purposefulness

The book I recommended is called Raising Boys by Steve Biddulph (he also wrote Raising Girls - both are brilliant!). Misunderstood and mislabelled, Western society is in general critical of boys behaviour, their natural tendencies and interests - as we try to mould them into our perceptions and expectations.

👣 I have a boy myself so know how sometimes the energy levels, need for physical contact, expression through anger and aggression can be pretty intense and overwhelming.

☀️ He is also loving, sensitive, helpful and loyal in equal measure.

Let's decode boys and support them in feeling and expressing their full range of feelings, from the Early Years, laying the foundations of emotional intelligence.

Tag a friend with a son, or boy, in their life who would enjoy this session. 😻

During this Instalive we discussed one of the key concepts of Montessori Living/Parenting and Education - developing autonomy from a young age so as to support our children in becoming capable, compassionate and contributing members of society.

We answered the following questions:

🌞 So how do we develop autonomy from birth? Through the #preparedenvironment and having a #montessorimindset .

🌹 How do we help our children to help themselves, rather than taking over?

We see our children as immensely capable, regardless of their age, we wait before we jump in to help and we observe our child to understand their needs and interests.

Thank you for joining me! In this IG Live we discussed how puppets, teddies, stuffed animals are a fun and effective way for parents and caregivers to cultivate emotional intelligence in children.

Here are the main points that we covered:

✓ Children love hearing stories!

✓They offer a child an opportunity to experience the world from another's perspective.

✓ Challenging behaviour (from our child or others) can be addressed in a non shaming or blaming way.

✓ Difficult feelings (which is usually the reason behind challenging behaviour) can be discussed in an open, non-judgemental manner.

In this Instalive we discussed trust, affirming that all of parenting is about trusting our children and trusting ourselves:

To quote Dr Montessori "When the child is ready she will do it properly". Having a deep level of trust in our children and their unique path invites us to trust ourselves... 😎 We started with the simple premise that each of us have out own unique journey, and as parents we can honour our child's journey. 🤩

Secondly we looked at the simple truth that children are always doing the best that they can (and we are too!). If they were able to behave differently in the moment then they would. We can trust that they are innately good and it is our role as parents and caregivers to guide them in their goodness (rather than assuming the worst when they are misbehaving). 💗

And thirdly we acknowledge the ways that we were not trusted as a child, and hence the ways in which we do not trust ourselves now. Regaining a deep sense of trust in ourselves, our inner wisdom and our body's intelligence is one pathway to cultivating trust in our children and the path ahead of them.

We touched on a few practices for building trust in ourselves on a daily basis. Almost impossibly simple, but the effects are huge when cumulative. Tell me below the ways in which you are cultivating trust in yourself.

In Top Tip Tuesday this evening we discussed that it is interesting that we hold our children to standards of behaviour that we may not practise ourselves.🤔

🤩 This self reflection came from being with clients who were discussing whether their almost two year old son 'should' be able to consistently replace his toys on the shelf where they belong. We decided that as adults we often don't return things to their correct place, and engage in all sorts of behaviours that we 'shouldn't' really do 😂.

🧡 During our session this evening I invite you to focus on the joy of experiencing life with your child and through the eyes of a child.

💙 As ever, when we feel particularly strongly about our child adhering to our rules or obeying us, we can check in with our bodies to know where and when we have felt these feelings before. We get curious at our own reactions, knowing that the child in front of us is developing in their own unique way at their pace in their own time.

All we need to do is enjoy this experience alongside them.😍

💖 So, enjoy the the journey, and trust that your child will unfold into who they are meant to become.

Thank you!

For this week's Top Tip Tuesday we discussed anger. Our own anger and where it comes from, our children's anger, and how accepting all parts of ourselves with radical self-compassion is part of our healing process. It was pretty uncomfortable and vulnerable talking about this!

And so, we delved our relationship with anger. We discussed that our response to anger as adults would depend upon the approach given to anger in our family of origin. We discussed how we can support our children in growing up in an environment in which anger is accepted as a normal human emotion, without shame, blame or judgement.

We spoke about making room for our anger as a healthy human emotion, and doing that by feeling into our bodies first, identifying where the sensation is, feeling its colour and texture. We discussed anger release with our children, and how showing them our self regulation practices is so powerful for them to witness.

Essentially, we all get angry, and our feeling/self judgement about anger can be more harmful than the anger itself. We had some connection problems at the end I'm afraid so the last few minutes were a bit funny. Thank you for joining! 🙏🏾😍💫

In this Instagram Live we discussed the 'reserved' child, those who are: slow to 'warm up' in social situations, stay glued to their parent in the playground, at a playdate or a birthday party. Reluctant to make eye contact with unfamiliar people. 😊

We spoke about how we often have unconscious expectations of how children 'should' behave; and that society's expectations of a child's emotional capabilities are often misaligned with their developmental capabilities.

We spoke about the importance of accepting our child as they are, allowing them to unfold naturally rather than expecting them to conform to our needs or wishes.

I gave tips on how to support our child in social situations where they are not yet ready to join in, and what to say to other adults who try to make our child' join in' against their wishes.💖

And how to develop social skills longer term by highlighting others' reactions when we role model openness and friendliness.

✨What value is there in extra curricular activities for young children?💕

😍 Offering simple choices to young children - why and how 🎈

In this Top Tip Tuesday we looked at the basics of offering simple choices to our young children.

The Why:

1) to show respect to our child

2) to support their development of agency and self-direction

3) to ease power struggles

How:

1) Freedom of choice primarily comes from the immediate environment, arrange things for your child in a simple, ordered and accessible way.

2) offer a handful of simple choices every day (clothing, food etc)

3) when offering a choice ensure it is a genuine choice whereby you are happy with either outcome.

4) the choice should be between two options, a young child cannot cope with multiple choices.

Thank you for joining me for this Top Tip Tuesday. In this session we covered the huge transition of the arrival of a new baby in the home.

We discussed:

Conflicted feelings: how the older child will feel love and a connection to their new sibling at the same time as jealousy and resentment.

Normal behaviours that can occur during this time: Regressions, attention seeking, aggression.

How to 'love' our child through this stage, through validation, connection and problem solving together.

We had a few viewer questions that were really useful points to cover as well.❤

What does it mean for me to allow my child to expand? What does it mean for me to allow my child to be in their fullness?

I had so many beautiful messages about my journal prompt last week regarding expanding our children, so in this Live I talked through 10 ways that we can expand our child, supporting them in becoming the fullness of all they can be.

We also talked about expanding our hearts as adults, and practising radical self-compassion.

These topics go deep into our introspection of what it means to follow our child, to support them in fulfilling their potential, allowing them to unfold into all that they can be. And to support ourselves unconditionally as well .😍

And for insightful and inspiring visions of how to 'be' with your child; check out the #montessorimission Podcast Series with @jeannemariepaynel - @maani_and_me and @rumi_montessori .

'Play is the work of the child' - the powerful words of Dr Montessori; as relevant now as they were a century ago.

In this InstaLive we discussed the importance of play, the benefits, touched on the stages of play and answered a few questions about play. We had lots of lovely viewer engagement, thank you so much!

I mention Mildred Parten's Stages of Play during the discussion - this was research from 1929 on the stages of play in children and is still used as a framework today in early childhood development. Google it for further details if you are interested in going deeper into this fascinating topic.

👣 All play is valuable, vital in fact, children learn through play in the early years.

✨ Amongst many other benefits, children practise their social skills, process their emotions, problem solve, and have fun - all in the name of play.

Send me a DM for future topics for Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live, I love hearing your questions and suggestions.

🎉 During this Top Tip Tuesday this evening we looked at how connecting through humour, fun and playfulness builds a lasting bond of love, trust and cooperation with our child. 💕

✓ Finding the route to humour, fun and playfulness with your child is key. Some children love hide & seek, chasing, tickling, others like silly voices, walks and pretending to be animals. Be a detective and find out what is the perfect type of silliness to move your child away from a power struggle situation. 💖

✓ We looked at how hardly ANYTHING is a serious teaching moment with our child! ✨

✓ We learnt to just be easier, chill out, relax. Your child is innately good and we gently guide them as they grow and their brain matures. 🎈

We finished with our journalling prompt to reflect upon for the day: 'How can you be playful today ABOVE teaching anything or correcting anything?'

In this episode, I am honoured to talk to Trisha Moquino, Co-founder of the Keres Children’s Learning Center (KCLC). Trisha is a shining light for the Keres people, and Indigenous people around the world; through her humility, dignity, and commitment to her people, Trisha shows us all what it means to be an anti-racist ally and a champion for the equal rights of all children. As a public school teacher, in 2006 Trisha saw that she was perpetuating an educational system that did not support the needs of many Indigenous children, so she envisioned an education that would support Keres language and cultural learning as well as academic development. With those goals in mind and her background in bilingual and Montessori education, she co-founded KCLC, which opened in 2012 as a Keres-immersion early childhood classroom using Montessori pedagogy. It has since expanded to include a Montessori dual-language Elementary classroom.

On Instagram Live this week we discussed setting up a real Workshop (with real tools) to support your Preschooler's need for physical, heavy work that involves full body movement:

We covered:

How to tell if your child might be ready for these type of tools (there are two key things to look for, hand/eye coordination and impulse control).

What to introduce and in what order.

✨Montessori is a way of life - not just pretty shelves!😍

Montessori is a way of life, not just an educational method. You can be a Montessori Parent from the respect, nurturing and guidance you offer to your child; without having any Montessori materials and with having an untidy home.

Thank you for joining me! In this Live we tried to unpick a few of the misconceptions about Montessori education and Montessori in the home. We discussed starting with the premise of respect as our foundation for our family.

I spoke about starting with the preparation of our physical space being our starting point because once we have a home that is simple, ordered and accessible then our child will show us what their needs are and where their interests lie. A prepared environment allows us to 'follow the child', which will tell us everything we need to know.

Another point we covered was how Montessori Parenting and Conscious Parenting are interwoven; parenting calls us to become aware of our own fears and/or prejudices, and invites us to not pass these down to the next generation. It is challenging work and part of the preparation of an adult in a Montessori environment, and thus our role as parents/caregivers.

✨How to support emotional regulation when our child is angry or frustrated❤

During this InstaLive we looked at why our young children get so angry and frustrated, and how we can help them to calm down.

We discussed:

How tantrums/frustrations are a normal part of development, they are a healthy discharge of emotions.

The reasoning part of the brain is not developed until much older, so trying to reason with an angry child is counterproductive.

Staying present, emotionally and physically to provide support is more important than anything else.

In this session we discussed introducing simple meditation techniques for even our very young children; just one of the tools we can have in our parenting toolbox to support our children on their lifelong journey of emotional regulation.

This was a really simple breathing technique for our children (and us) to bring awareness to how out breath moves in our body. A great technique for nap or bedtime to be practised regularly so that it becomes part of your and their daily experience.

In this Instalive we looked at how teaching our children respect (of anything and everything) firstly comes from our embodiment of respect in all that we do, how we treat our children, our family members, and those outside the home.

And secondly we spoke about what expectations we can have around our children deferring their wishes, waiting their turn; we learnt that respect can only be shown/embodied by a child in line with their developmental stage.

Enjoy!

In this Instagram Live we unpacked why we overreact, showing ourselves radical self-compassion, and how we can respond both in the moment we are triggered, and the reflection we can we after the event.

This is about perfection, this is about our journey, and honouring that we are always doing are best, and so are our children.

In this episode we looked at why young children love real, hard work like this: pushing, pulling, lifting, dragging things that are often "too heavy" for them. (panting and being out of breath is good!)

The importance of this work for our child's development.

What size/shape of objects are the most satisfying for them to manoeuvre with.

In this Top Tip Tuesday for InstaLive we looked at how to prepare older siblings for the arrival of a new baby.

Some approaches suggest buying gifts to 'keep the older sibling busy', and others suggest to emphasise to the older sibling that they are "big now" so as to invoke a sense of responsibility.

During the Live we talked about how we can approach this topic with sensitivity and respect, prepare older siblings in a way that invites discussion, and what expectations we can have around the older siblings behaviour /reaction to the new baby.

  • What is different about the Montessori approach to babies?
  • During this Live we looked at how in the Montessori way, we offer our tiniest babies freedom of movement from the very first days of life. (sounds crazy right?!).
  • How it calls for a huge shift in our perspective of babies - how we can move from a position of wanting to contain them, to respecting them, seeing how capable they are.

In this Top Tip Tuesday we looked at the Five Love Languages for Children, a method for strengthening relationships for adults and children alike created by Gary Chapman.

We looked at how to identify your child's love language, and when using this to develop our connection with them, cooperation and collaboration naturally grows.

Through the Five Love Languages for Children and knowing our child's love language we can nurture stronger connections and bonds that facilitate cooperation, collaboration, conflict resolution and setting boundaries.

The Five Love Languages series was created by Gary Chapman, and full details of this transformative relationship tool can be found at his website: www.5lovelanguages.com

In this session we cover the following questions further to a Parent Enrichment Session that I had this week:

  • What is the key to our child being self confident?
  • When do we 'start" supporting them in developing this?
  • And how do we develop this?
  • Do we praise them? Do we not allow them to struggle or make mistakes? Do we protect them so they don't experience disappointment?
  • Our discussion tomorrow will offer examples of the many ways that we can raise confident, self directed and compassionate children.
  • We'll look at how the way our home environment is prepared is so crucial in fostering self confidence, as well as our positive interactions with our child.

Supporting siblings with their relationship and nurturing their special bond. 🙏🏽

I often receive questions about sibling dynamics, the role play they engage in together, sorting out (or not) their arguments, when to intervene when it gets physical, and how to nurture this precious sibling bond.

And during the holiday season of more intense time spent together, gift giving and resentments, disagreements and a competitive edge can become more apparent.

Join me tomorrow evening on Instagram Live to discuss how we can support siblings, throughout the year, not just during Christmas.

And as ever, we'll be poking around in our own uncomfortable feelings regarding our children's behaviour, and see where we land.

Montessori is a pathway to peace. It is a gateway to massive societal change.

The images of pretty shelves and ordered environments can lead people to believe that it is all about aesthetics, or only for the wealthy, or 'not for them'.

Certainly, it has had that image of elitism which is not in alignment with its humble beginnings with street children in Rome in the early twentieth century.

On  Top Tip Tuesday we dispelled common misconceptions about Montessori, and shone a light on what the method really is, and why Dr Montessori's vision is more relevant than ever in today's world.

✨Why we observe rather than offering to help straightaway💖

  • During this week's Top Tip Tuesday we discussed the following:

Why offering to help is actually a hindrance because it breaks concentration.

How offering to help infers that they cannot complete the task, which lowers, rather than increases their self confidence.

What we can say when they do complete their task; so that we are honouring and celebrating their unique learning journey. (Rather than giving them praise that makes it all about us).

Why sitting close by to them, quietly observing them, is the most powerful support we could ever offer.🙏🏽

✨ Why we don't correct our children when their t shirt is on back to front❤

Our Top Tip Tuesday covers '9 reasons why we don't correct our young child when they get something 'wrong', like wearing their shoes on opposite feet or their t shirt back to front:

It can almost be a reflex action for us, this impulse to correct when our children get something 'wrong' . Why does it bother us so much when their T shirt is on back to front? 🤔. It really doesn't matter in the big scheme of things does it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

It can be alot for our ego (and feel very uncomfortable) to NOT correct when our child wears their shoes on opposite feet or writes letters/numbers back to front or upside down.

This is about our child and allowing their sense of self to unfold. The fact they have tried and achieved it in their own way is immensely powerful.

Not correcting asks us to trust that "when the child is ready she will do it properly".

It is important for us to honour their path, their learning journey, and their 'mistakes'.

Thank you for joining, hope you enjoy it!

✨Feelings are called feelings because we're meant to FEEL them✨

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

In this Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live we discussed a somatic approach to discussing feelings with our children.

Supporting them in becoming aware of the sensations within their body as a first step.

Us, as parents, understanding that young children need real, first hand experiences, so feeling feelings rather than talking about them is natural and an incredibly powerful practice to start.

We begin by getting familiar with our own bodily sensations, what are we feeling within our bodies? Where do we feel them, what is the colour, temperature and texture of them?

When we feel comfortable with experiencing our full range of emotions inside of our body we will be able to guide our children in this practice.

Enjoy, and thank you for joining me!

• It is about the level of connection and bonding we can feel when we stop and observe them in the moment.

✔ Movement is the beginning of cognition and emotional regulation

✔ Recent research tells us that we have a brain, not to think, but to move.

✔ From movement we learn everything else, however Western society is constructed in such a way that more importance is placed on thinking rather than moving.

✔ We were born to move first.  States of higher cognition develop and become available once we have achieved physical capability.

✔So, what does this mean for our children, and how can we support them?

  • Creating an environment that is simple-ordered-accessible-beautiful by using what we have already at our fingertips and celebrating our cultural heritage 😍.
  • Montessori in the home can sometimes be thought of as purely a picture perfect set of shelves; and that this alienates families who believe that they do not have the means to buy 'all of that expensive Montessori stuff'.
  • In reality, nothing can be further from the truth.
  • Your home environment that you prepare for your child should be a reflection of your culture, your beliefs, your passions. It is not meant to look like the perfect and expensive looking environments that we see on social media. It should be simple, ordered, accessible and beautiful, and unique to you.
  • Whatever your cultural heritage, it is perfect, and should be celebrated. Our children need spaces created especially for them to promote their independence and capability, this is universal - however the style, the stamp, the essential of your home environment comes from you the individual, your family, your culture. Use what you have already at home, you don't need to buy anything else.
  • We also look at how we can be parents who empower our children; by stepping back, by observing our child and by listening.

  • This discussion was inspired by our screening of the film ‘Childhood’. The film, set in a rural Norwegian kindergarten prompted many questions about how we can give our children real first-hand experiences in nature whilst living in a city created in a desert 🤔
  • From our questions and audience participation it seems that when we are not able to recreate the familiar natural world experiences that we know from our home countries we become disillusioned and seek out artificially created nature experiences instead.
  • I would like to offer a different path, one where we seek out what we can learn here in this desert landscape, from a terrain and environment that may be vastly different from our home countries.
  • My vision is for us to learn about what we have here, desert animals, desert insects, desert plants, all of the things that young children are obsessed about! So we can appreciate and honour the natural heritage on our doorstep. ❤️
  • We'll also discuss how 'being in nature' and offering first hand experiences calls for our absolute presence, and when we are present we can then learn from our children.
  • Can we commit to a complete digital detox when we are experiencing nature first hand?

  • What is going on in a child's brain and body during an upset.
  • How to do it, what to say, how to rôle model. It's pretty simple for all ages!
  • Our learning journey (or perhaps unlearning) that needs to take place before we will be able to fully step into this space of acceptance and collaborative approach to emotional regulation.
  • Feelings are called feelings because we're meant to 'feel' them! So why are we 'talking' about them to our children but not supporting them in actually 'feeling' them? 🤔
  • It is imperative it is to support our children in feeling their feelings firstly in their BODIES before we rush to label them, to intellectualise them, or apply logic and reasoning to them.
  • Supporting our children in emotional regulation is a partnership that begins in early childhood. And this is as relevant to a two year old as it is for a fifteen year old. 💖

  • It can be alot for our ego (and feel very uncomfortable) to NOT correct when our child wears their shoes on opposite feet or writes letters/numbers back to front or upside down.
  • This is about our child and allowing their sense of self to unfold. The fact they have tried and achieved it in their own way is immensely powerful.
  • Not correcting asks us to trust that "when the child is ready she will do it properly".
  • It is important for us to honour their path, their learning journey, and their 'mistakes'.

Enjoy!

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

Help me to do it myself!

This is the rallying call of every young child, even infants!

  • It is humbling to see how capable even the youngest child can be when s/he is given the opportunity.
  • It is astonishing to see how the simplest arrangement of a few key items at our child's height can support, empower and settle them.
  • We offer our littlest children an environment that is designed with their capability and self-direction in mind, so they can unfold into capable human beings.
  • There are lots of small changes that we can make today to make our homes really child-friendly, and lots of big changes too!
