When is the last time you prayed? About 32% of U.S. adults said they seldom or never pray (up from 18% in 2007) with 29% of U.S. adults reporting they had no religious affiliation (an increase of 6 percentage points from 2016), with Millennials leading that shift. American adults are connecting less and less with religion and by extension the Church. For those interested in seeking both, how do you navigate that without compromising your contemporary beliefs on diversity, equity and inclusion?
This week, Syd sits down with Millennial church leaders, Joslyn Henderson and Demarius Newsome, for an uplifting conversation on the necessity (or lack thereof) of Church for younger generations in S4 Ep8 How to Navigate Modern Spirituality in the Church.
Minister Joslyn Henderson is the Director of Worship Arts at a multicultural, multigenerational, inclusive church in Northeast Washington D.C. As a nationally celebrated gospel singer and worship leader, she infuses her performative ministry with her scholarship on Black sacred music.
Demarius Newsome in an Atlanta based attorney and worship leader who serves in multiple capacities of ministry and leadership at the Ray of Hope Christian Church, where he constantly seeks to understand “why” and “how” we do church.

If you’re dating in 2023, chances are you are leveraging the internet or some manner of technology to date people outside of your “safety bubble.” Meaning, you are dating people that neither you nor anyone you know can vouch for or verify the background, history or character of your potential dates.
Technology can be a very effective tool in finding love, but love is not the only thing that daters are finding online. Online daters, especially young women, are also finding frustration and in some cases harassment, assault or death with a reported 16,000 abductions, 100 murders and thousands of rapes being committed annually by online predators.
So, how do we protect ourselves while dating outside of our safety bubbles? BY DOING OUR RESEARCH!!! Join Syd for Season 4 Episode 7 as she sits down with private investigator, Connie B. Ernest, for an informative discussion on how to leverage the internet to properly vet potential love interests.

For some women the road to pregnancy includes a wild night of passion and not much else, but for so many more the road to pregnancy is a process. A process filled with fears, doubts, shame, financial burden, medical intervention, support and hope.
About 10 percent of women (6.1 million) in the US ages 15-44 have difficulty getting pregnant or staying pregnant, according to the CDC. Today’s episode is for the 6.1 million women who have had and the millions of women who will experience difficulty with conceiving and birthing a child. Myself and today’s guest, Shalmeka Sweet, are part of the 6.1 million women. This episode is for us.
Shalmeka is a counseling faculty member at South Mountain Community College teaching an array of psychology and counseling classes along with providing counseling services to students. She is also co-host of The Beyond Conception podcast, in which, she her husband share their 9-year infertility journey with a dose of faith, hope, love, and laughter to help couples conceptualize everything that is beyond their conception

Does it feel like you’ve been dating the same guy for the last ten years? You know the type. The guy who’s “just not ready to commit,” “not looking for anything serious,” or “isn’t sure why they’re dating beyond the hope of regular sex.” That’s because you probably are!
Research suggests that 50% of singles aren’t looking for anything when dating, 10% of singles are looking for something casual and 26% of singles don’t know what they’re looking for at all. This means 86% of singles are not looking to seriously date. So, if you want to find someone in the 14% of “serious daters”, you had better be asking the right questions.
To help us get to the 14%er’s with our sanity still intact, Syd is sitting down with dating and “vetting” coach, DM Woods to discuss how to ask the right questions to weed out all the wrong men.
DM Woods is a best-selling author, speaker and dating coach who is disrupting the dating world by breaking the limiting beliefs, circles of frustration, and confusion surrounding modern dating.

As women of color, we are often told that we need to be twice as good to go half as far, but do we need Master’s degrees to be successful? When you factor in the costs ($80,000 for a moderately ranked 2-year program and more than $100,000 for top 2-year programs) compared to the increase in salary (only 10-15% for human services; 25% on average and 60-150%+ for top MBA programs), is the input worth the output? Even if we decide with a resounding, “Yes,” that it is, we must also ask: ‘how do we make the most of this investment? To answer our questions and ensure that we make the most out of our very expensive academic situations, Syd is sitting down with Dra. Yvette Martínez-Vu, a Chicana mother-scholar, author, academic, host of the Grad School Femtoring Podcast and academic coach. She focuses her scholarship and coaching on empowering first-generation students of color as they navigate higher education. After working in higher education for over ten years, she transitioned out and relocated her little familia from California to Portugal. Want to connect with Dra. Millennial women are marrying later than any other previous generation of women. In 1965, the average marrying age for women was 21, and for men, it was 23. Today, the average marrying age for women is 29.2 and 30.9 for men.
Millennial women are citing career and financial stability as the main reasons for delaying marriage until their thirties. This means that Millennial women are entering into marriage with more STUFF than previous generations of women (i.e. homes, retirement accounts, cars, pensions, dogs…etc.) and we need to learn how to protect our ASSets in marriage and more importantly divorce.
This week, join Syd for Season 3 Episode 5 Love Can Cost Everything: How to Navigate Prenups, Postnups and Marital Assets, as she sits down with family law attorney, Jephonne Roy, Esq. for an educational and entertaining conversation on how to navigate the business of marriage.
Attorney Jephonne Roy is a Senior Associate Attorney at The Family Matters Law Group in Morrow, Georgia and specializes her practice on divorce, child custody, pre-nups, post nups and the equitable distribution of marital assets.

Whoever said that diamonds were a girl’s best friend, had never met the Millennial woman because our best friend’s name is Wander Lusty. Millennials are trading in retail therapy for “travel therapy” and research suggests they may be on to something.
Many psychology professionals recommend travel as a form of therapy. Exploring new sights, smells, sounds, and conversations can stimulate your senses in a refreshing way and possibly even trigger your inner muse as well.
This week join Syd for S3 Ep4, as she sits down with the “Millennial’s Travel Agent,” Marissa Daniels, for an informative conversation on how to satisfy your wanderlust and travel in style on a budget. If travel is considered a form of therapy, then this week Marissa is our therapist.
Marissa Daniels is an experienced travel agent, avid traveler, and founder of Spread Your Wings Travel Agency. Marissa understands that traveling is a major part of daily living. From busy professionals to leisure travelers, she takes pride in taking the stress out of travel for her clients and helping them to create memories that will last a lifetime.

According to research, men orgasm three times as much as women during heterosexual partnered sex. In terms of percentage, roughly 91% of men verses 39% of women report that they “usually” or “always” reach orgasm as a result of heterosexual intercourse. This data represents the “orgasm gap.” Well ladies, it’s 2022 and it’s time we take back our power, own our sexual pleasure and close the gap.
This week, join Syd, as she sits down with sexologist, Goody Howard, MSW, MPH as they discuss how to take ownership of your sexual pleasure. Whether you choose to love men, or women or both, Goody provides all the tips and tricks you need to increase your pleasure in the bedroom and beyond.

SHOW NOTES:
What’s the first section that should be on your resume?
A professional summary that is a brief statement that describes your experience and why you qualify for a role. Sample Statement: I am a collaborative, mission-driven, innovative Attorney with 10 years of experience as in-house general counsel for large corporations.
What should be next on your resume?
A bullet point list of key words that describe your skills, titled “Areas of Expertise” or “Core Competencies,” that you pull directly from the job description, to communicate why you’re a good fit for a particular role.
What should be next?
Your work experience section should be next and should be limited to 3-4 roles and should include no more than 10 years of work history.
Should you include internships on your resume as a working professional?
Yes, especially if your internship is directly applicable to the role. However, if the internship is fairly old, then include the internship as an honorable mention instead of a full description of work.
How long should your resume be?
Ideally, a resume should be one page, UNLESS you are applying for director level and above roles. In that case, two pages is acceptable.
Can you lie on your resume?
You cannot and should not lie on your resume. Make sure that the days and months that you worked at a job, your job title and what you did in the role are accurate. If you do try to artificially fluff your resume, at the very least make sure that whatever you include on your application, in your resume and on your LinkedIn profile are consistent.
Should we include Honors, Awards or Community Service?
Only if you have space. If including any of these things will be the difference between you having a one-page or two-page resume, save them for an application, cover letter or interview.
Where should your education go on your resume?
If you’re a recent graduate, include your education at the top of your resume. If you’re more than 5 years out of school include it at the bottom. Only include a GPA with your education if you have above a 3.5 and that goes for graduate school and undergraduate school.
Recession, recession and more recession. Lately, discussions of recession are at the top of every headline. But, realistically speaking, what can you do to prepare? You can prepare by getting your finances together and creating a financial plan that works.

Inflation is on the rise, with the average cost of goods up 8.6%. The average cost of gas is $6/gal and the average price of rent in NYC just hit an all-time high of $4,000/mo. Trying to take care of yourself is hard. Trying to take care of yourself and a child can seem impossible. That’s why more and more women are ditching “mom vibes” for “rich auntie vibes.”

SHOW NOTES
Background/Facts:
Why do you think women are deciding, at increasingly higher rates, not to have children?
Women have more options and information than ever before in terms of deciding how they want to live their lives.
What is the difference between childfree and childless?
Childfree refers to the conscious and voluntary decision not to parent, whether that be to a biological, foster or adopted child. Childless refers to a person who either wants to have a child, but has not yet had one; or wants to become a biological parent but cannot due to a medical inability to do so.
Is it difficult to date or find long term partners as a childfree woman?
Yes, dating as a childfree woman or man can be difficult because although there are large swaths of the population who do not want to have children, it can be difficult to find those people if you don’t know where to look. It can also be difficult because you are eliminating a large number of potential partners from your dating pool (i.e. men or women who DO want to have children).
Is it common for women to waiver in their decision to have children?
It does happen and people do change their minds. However, it is important to communicate to potential partners AS SOON AS POSSIBLE of your lack of desire to have children. You do not want to wait to tell potential partners that you either do not want to have children or that you’re unsure whether you want to have children. Not being clear and transparent about your position regarding children can cause a lot of issues in a relationship
Why did you decide not to have children?
When I thought about what I wanted my life to look like, having children didn’t align with my vision for my life. I encourage other women to do the same. Imagine what a perfect life looks for you and that ask yourself whether or not a child fits into that life.
What advice do you have for women who are on the fence about having children?
Whatever choice you make, make sure you make it for YOURSELF. DO NOT make such a huge decision for your parents, siblings or even your partner. Make sure that you have a baby because you genuinely want to bring a life into this world.

SHOW NOTES
What is personal style?
Personal style is your ability to express who you are with what you wear.
How do you cultivate style?
Focus on figuring out who you are and then determine how you can communicate who you are through your clothes.
What are the different style personalities/classifications that we can use to try to define our style?
What are the different body type classifications?
There are generally 3 areas where women tend to carry their weight, in their bust, their waist or their hips. Determine where you carry the majority of your weight to figure out the general shape/type of your body.
What are some tips for dressing each body type?
Focus on how to disguise or balance out the areas of your body where you carry the most weight or that you want to draw the most attention to. For example, if you carry most of your weight in your waist (around your middle), you may want to consider wearing a top or jacket with shoulder pads or puffy sleeves to draw attention away from your middle to your shoulders and to balance out the proportions of your body.
Is black the most slimming color that you can wear?
No, color does not determine how your shape looks. How a garment fits including the material and cut of the fabric is the most significant factor in determining how your shape looks.
How do you elevate your wardrobe?
Once you have determined your style personality, find brands and stores that fit your style personality even if those brands are out of your current budget. If those brands fall outside of your current budget, determine how you can shift your spending habits to better align with the brands that you want to wear.

SHOW NOTES
What is a “high value” partner?
A high value man is a provider, someone who makes you feel safe mentally, emotionally and physically. He is financially stable, makes sacrifices, makes you a priority in his life and puts family first.
A high value man is not the same as a high-earning man. A high earning man makes a lot of money and often times money is the only thing he has to offer.
What’s the key to finding a high value partner?
The key to finding a high value partner is finding yourself first. You must know yourself so that you can easily identify partners who can give you what you want and communicate to them clearly and accurately your specific needs.
The following are steps to finding a high value partner:
Step 1: You must recognize your own patterns.
Most of your insecurities stem from past traumas and/or childhood. You MUST commit to doing the inner work required to fix yourself and heal your past traumas so that you can attract a whole, healed and supportive partner.
Step 2: Make yourself Available
Physical Availability-- Online dating is a great place to meet people. You may also need to go out more, specifically to places where you can find the type of partner you want to attract.
Some Tips for making yourself more available:
-When online dating, set your location to where you believe your potential partner might be. For example, set your location to the more affluent area of town, if that’s where you think your potential partner lives or hangs out.
-Wear clothes that you wouldn’t mind your future potential partner seeing you in.
Emotional availability—You must make yourself emotionally available to receive the love you want to attract. This means doing your inner work to heal yourself and cultivating a positive outlook on dating in general by being mindful of the content you consume and the people who you allow to poor into you. For example, if you’re always listening to sad songs that claim, “men are dogs,” you are far more likely to find men who are dogs. You will find whatever you are actively looking for.
Step 3: Set Boundaries and Communicate Them
Know your deal breakers so that you can communicate those and allow men who cannot meet those expectations with opportunities to de-select themselves.
Step 4: Allow Men to be Men
If you treat a man like a child, even a high-value man, he will act like a child. Don’t get in the habit of doing and being everything for your partner. Allow them the space to do and figure things out on their own. This will help them to be a better, more supportive partner to you when you need help.

Show Notes
In this episode, Liku offers some great tips on how to leave your job like a BOSS:
Step 1: Determine Your Next Move. Create a vision for what your next steps will look like whether that may be starting a business or starting a new job. Make sure you have a clear picture as to what your immediate future (1-6 months) will look like.
Step 2: Get Your finances in Order. Quitting your job without another job lined up only sounds good if you have enough money saved and/or financial support from friends, family, significant others…etc. to keep the lights on while you’re in between jobs. Make sure you know where your next mortgage/rent payment is coming from BEFORE you quit your job. You may also want to have a plan for how to continue certain benefits like health/medical/dental insurance without a job.
Step 3: Take Some Time to Reflect. Have a clear understanding of what you liked or didn’t like in your previous role. You want to make sure your new role or career move looks different than the one you just left. Otherwise, you may be leaving a bad situation for an even worse situation.
Step 4: Read the Company Rule Book. Generally, a company may have a right to claim ownership over any work that you create while you’re at work even if you’re creating it for yourself or your side hustle. Make sure you’re following the rules so that you don’t have any issues on your way out.
Step 5: Take Some Time Off. You may need to refer to Step 2 to determine just how much time you can take off in between gigs. However, take off as much time as your spirit and budget will allow. It’s important to take time to re-center and rejuvenate your mind and body before starting something new.
Step 6: Cultivate a Support System. Support of friends and family or even a therapist is super important to successfully navigating big life transitions. Make sure you choose your community wisely.

SHOW NOTES
What is burnout?
A syndrome characterized by chronic workplace stress that has not been properly managed that is specific to the workplace can bleed into other areas of life. There are three dimensions of burnout
How do I know if I’m burnt out or just stressed?
Can I manage repeated instances stress without getting burnout?
Yes, you can manage stress with preparation and planning in a way that won’t necessarily lead you to burnout. For example, if you know a stressful presentation, case or week is coming up, plan your workouts, meals and downtime in advance. Actually write these things in your schedule. Even if it’s just a 15-minute walk or nap during the workday, put it in your schedule to ensure that you prioritize your well-being. However, repeated instances of stress without proper management will inevitably lead to burnout.
What are the symptoms of burnout?
How do I know if I’m burnt out or depressed?
Depression is characterized by a deeper and more chronic sense of hopelessness, despair, irritability and/or anxiety that is more difficult to overcome. Mild depressive symptoms may be present in burnout but depressive symptoms associated with burnout are generally more situational/environment-specific and can be cured more easily with a change of environment or habits.
What can happen if we don’t address burnout?
Unaddressed burnout can lead to:
How do we overcome burnout?
NOTHING. DO NOTHING. The best thing you can do for yourself when you are burnt out is to REST. You need to reset your nervous system so that it can return to a healthy state of rest. Make sure you’re eating a healthy diet, drinking lots of water, getting your sleep pattern back on track, meditating (if that relaxes you) and engaging in light exercise. Building and maintaining a supportive community is also important for overcoming burnout.

SUPPORT WOMEN. PROTECT WOMEN. EMPOWER WOMEN.
The Supreme Court is poised to make a decision on abortion that could rock the very foundation of American democracy—an individual’s right to choose what “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” looks like for them. We covered this issue last year when a Texas law went into effect that severely limited a woman’s right to an abortion. In light of the Supreme Court’s pending ruling, we have remixed and are re-airing this episode to once again shine a light on this very important topic.
In this episode of the Sugar Free Podcast, Really Humanizing Abortion-- Discussing the Impact of the New Abortion Laws in Texas, Syd delves deeply into the negative impact that more restrictive laws on abortion can have on young women and their abilities to live a life of their choosing. Join Syd and very special guest, Tiffany Clayton, as they put a name and a face to the process of abortion by having a vulnerable conversation about Tiffany’s abortion journey and her road to finding wholeness and peace post-abortion.

SHOW NOTES
Let’s start by defining some terms:
Ethical non-monogamy: an umbrella term that includes open relationships, swinging and polyamory, that describes the practice of taking part in romantic relationships that are not completely exclusive between two people, with the consent of all the people involved.
Polyamory: the practice of engaging in multiple romantic (and typically sexual) relationships, with the consent of all the people involved
Open Relationships: having more than one romantic or sexual partner at a time. It's an arrangement that both parties agree is non-exclusive or non-monogamous.
Monogamy: an exclusive relationship with only one partner (sexual and romantic) at a time.
Can you cheat in an open relationship?
Yes, you can cheat in an open relationship. Generally, the participants in an open relationship set the terms of engagement for the relationship. If one of the participants crosses a boundary or breaks a term of engagement, that would be considered cheating.
Is monogamy dead?
Monogamy isn’t dead. People can still engage in healthy monogamous relationships, if both participants put the effort and time into maintaining the exclusivity of the relationship, However, ethical non-monogamy is probably more pervasive than we realize. People just aren’t openly discussing it.
How do you match people interested in open relationships or how do you begin participating in open relationships?
Yolanda: I mostly match singles interested in traditional relationships. But on the rare occasion that I match a person interested in open relationships, I am typically helping them to find their central partners where there is a hierarchy to the relationships.
Bre: I got into open relationships simply because my current partner asked me if I was interested in being in an open relationship. After that, I did my own research and decided that it was something that I would like to try.
What was most appealing to you about open relationships?
Bre: The most appealing aspect of being in an open relationship was not feeling like I had to choose. I don’t have to choose in my platonic relationships, and I like not having to choose in my romantic relationships.
How do you manage jealousy in open relationships?
Bre: You have to do your inner work to determine your insecurities surrounding sharing your partner. I don’t feel like I have any claim of ownership over my partner(s) and so I don’t mind who else they spend their time with, so long as my needs are being met and they are honoring their commitment(s) to me.
Yolanda: Jealousy isn’t unique to open relationships. Jealousy also exists in monogamous relationships. Everyone has to get to the root of their insecurities to manage their jealousy.
Does engaging in open relationships make dating easier (especially for Black women)?
Yolanda: I think it does because it provides you with more options for finding meaningful relationships.
Bre: I have found that it has made dating more difficult because there are a lot of men who aren’t interested in participating in an open relationship.
What advice do you have for those wishing to engage in open relationships?
Whatever you decide to do, just make sure that it feels right for you. Don’t worry about what other people think or have to say. The only thing that matters is your happiness.
What resources or books do you recommend on navigating open relationships?

SHOW NOTES
What is a stock?
A stock is a portion of ownership in a corporation. Once a company goes public, all ownership of the company will be represented by stock.
What is a penny stock?
Companies that have stocks that trade at $5.00 per share and below.
What is the stock market?
The stock market is a place where you can go to buy and sell stock.
What are the DOW and the S&P 500 and what is the difference between the two?
The DOW Jones is an index that tracks the health of the 30 largest public companies. The S&P 500 is also an index, but it tracks the health of the largest 500 public companies. They are only indexes. You cannot buy or sell stock with the DOW or the S&P 500. You can buy and sell stock using stocking exchanges. The two biggest exchanges are the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq.
What is the difference between the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange?
There isn’t much functional difference between the two. They are both stock exchanges but tech companies traditionally are listed on the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange lists all other companies.
Is bitcoin a stock?
Bitcoin is not a stock; it is a form of currency or payment.
If bitcoin is not a stock, how can you invest in bitcoin?
The price/value of bitcoin fluctuates and because it goes up and down, people will exchange dollars into bitcoin with the hope that the value of bitcoin will increase to more than what you paid for it.
How do you pick a good stock?
Step 1 Know the History : Look at how well (i.e. has increased in value 7-10%) a company has performed within the last 6-12 months. You don’t want to invest in a company that hasn’t been performing well over a long period of time (6-12months)
Step 2 Do Your Research: Do some research on the company to determine how it makes money, how much money it’s making and whether the company’s money is growing. You can look at the public report the company provides on its website or check out the news section of a finance app or website to find information on a company. Some good finance websites to check out are CNBC or Yahoo Finance.
Step 3 Make a Decision: If the company has a solid performance history and your research shows that the company will likely continue to perform well, consider purchasing it. If the company hasn’t been performing well and/or your research suggests that it likely will continue to perform poorly, continue passing on that stock.

This Bonus Episode of The Sugar Free Podcast, Real Bald and Boujee Part I (Remix) feat. Michelle Gipson, is an exploration of life with alopecia. Join Syd and Michelle as they share their individual and collective journeys navigating life as women without hair. Michelle Gipson is a writer, host and counselor by trade as well as the founder and publisher of Written Magazine and Wine With Words®. You can learn more about Michelle and Written Magazine at www.writtenmag.com Bald fade, bald and bougie, bald and beautiful, no hair don’t care…etc. Rocking bald or low cuts for women has become widely accepted and incredibly popular. But the vast majority of bald, beautiful, empowered women we see made the CONSCIENCE CHOICE to be bald… and what a beautifully, freeing choice. However, because it was their choice, tomorrow they could choose differently and be halfway to a teeny weeny fro and within a year a full head of beautifully cascading hair. But what about those women who don’t have a choice? What if you woke up one morning to find handfuls of your hair lying on your pillow? This is the reality for scores of people and women who live everyday with alopecia. INFORMATION ABOUT ALOPECIA Alopecia is an auto-immune disorder that leaves those afflicted with little, and in some cases, no hair. The disease effects 6.8 million people in the U.S., including show host Syd Mack, and there is no cure. SHOW NOTES
What is an estate plan?
It is a plan that sets forth your intentions for how you wish to protect yourself, your stuff and your loved ones in the event that you die or become incapacitated.
Do I need an estate plan if I don’t own real estate?
Yes, you don’t need to own any real estate in order to have an estate plan. When it comes to estate planning, an estate consists of all money, property or other assets that a person may own in life or at the time of their death.
Does my estate have to be valued at a certain dollar amount to need an estate plan?
No, there is no minimum asset or dollar amount threshold for having an estate plan. Even if you don’t own anything, you should still have an estate plan to determine what happens to you in the event you become incapacitated.
What documents do you need to include in your estate plan for the purposes of incapacity planning?
What documents do you need to include in your estate plan to dispose of your assets when you die?
Will—a written instrument that provides instructions on how to divide your assets upon your death.
Trust –a legal agreement that allows a third party, a trustee, to hold and direct assets on behalf of a beneficiary.
If I have limited resources or funds, what documents are most important for me to have drafted first?
If you can afford to at least sit down with an attorney, you should first invest in a consultation with a lawyer in your state who can provide you with state-specific advice based on your individual situation. If you can’t afford to sit down with an attorney:

SHOW NOTES
What is the difference between a clearance item and a sale item?
A clearance item is a product that has been permanently or indefinitely reduced in price so that a store can either salvage or get rid of it. A sale item is a product that is reduced in price for a special reason for a limited amount of time.
Can anything go on sale or clearance?
Yes, generally a store would put anything on clearance that it wants to get rid of at any particular time. That means that anything from a certain variety of apple to a certain kind of rug might go on clearance.
When do things normally go on clearance?
Seasonal items like fresh foods or clothes will generally go on clearance towards the end of a season (i.e. summer, winter, fall, spring) when a store is trying to phase out or get rid of a specific kind of item like bathing suits, short, sunglasses…etc. Seasonal Items tend to go on clearance anywhere between one month to one week after a season ends.
How much of a discount can I get if something is on clearance?
Target will generally discount items at either 30%, 50% or 70% off. However, in very rare instances, with holiday items, they may mark something down to 90% off.
How long does it take for an item to get to 70% off?
Generally seasonal items start at 30% off around one week after the end of the season. If an item is still in stock by around the 6th week after the end of a season, it will go to 70% off. For example, summer clothes tend to hit the 70% off mark at the beginning of October.
How do you find clearance items?
Target generally has a clearance section, but there are tons of items in the store that are on clearance that are not in the clearance section. In order to find the deals, you have to track items in the store. If you don’t have time to track the deals yourself, follow bargain hunters on Instagram, YouTube or Tik Tok to be notified when they find a deal.

SHOW NOTES
Why does looking polished and put together matter?
The halo effect: According to research, good-looking people are more likely to be employed, are paid higher wages, more likely to be approved for a loan, more likely to negotiate better terms for a loan and are more likely to have attractive and higher paid spouses.
Upon a first impression, good looking and well dressed people are presumed to have highly desirable personality traits and/or characteristics such as altruism, stability and intelligence as if beautiful people have an invisible halo hanging over their heads. It is important to look your best to take advantage of the positive perceptions associated with looking good.
For example, if you have allotted $1200 per year for your wardrobe, instead of spending $300 on 20 items every quarter, consider spending $150 on two items every quarter. By the end of the year, you’ll have invested in 8 high-quality pieces.

To have kids or not to have kids, THAT is the question that every adult woman must ask herself. Lately, more and more women are answering that question in the negative and ditching the “mommy” vibes for Rich Auntie Vibes.

Tired of your job? Want to quit? Good, you’re not alone! According to Business Insider, 38 million Americans quit their jobs in 2021 and the trend has continued through the first quarter of 2022. This trend has snowballed into a movement that has been dubbed the Great Resignation.
Join Syd S2 Ep6 Making Career Moves Part I: How to Quit Your Job Like a Boss, as she sits down with attorney, mom, wife, BOSS and GREAT RESIGNER, Liku Amadi (formerly Midoshi), as the two discuss how Liku quit her job and started a business during the height of a global pandemic. Syd will also throw in some special nuggets about her own quitting journey.

SHOW NOTES
What is a “high value” partner?
A high value man is a provider, someone who makes you feel safe mentally, emotionally and physically. A high value man is financially stable, makes sacrifices, makes you a priority in his life and puts family first.
Emotional availability—You must make yourself emotionally available to receive the love you want to attract. This means doing your inner work to heal yourself and cultivating a positive outlook on dating in general by being mindful of the content you consume and the people who you allow to poor into you.

The premiere episode of Season Two, Making Peace with My Body: A Conversation About Size, Weight and Wellness is a love letter to women of color. A letter to remind us that 1) our bodies, our weights and our shapes ARE healthy; and 2) the current standards of weight, beauty and wellness weren't created with our bodies in mind.
The prevailing current standard includes the Body mass index (BMI), a standard health assessment tool developed in 1832 to easily identify and detect obesity in adults, that has long been criticized as an ineffective measure of health and/or obesity, yet is still used in most healthcare facilities today.
According to Newsweek, an increasing amount of research shows that BMI and weight are not necessarily the main indicators of a person's health. Additionally, what's considered an unhealthy BMI—a number that may predict the onset of chronic diseases—is not the same across all races and ethnicities. Many who question the use of BMI in clinical settings point out that it's a health metric that's resulted from decades of research mostly conducted on white people.
Research also suggests that weight distribution or where you carry the majority of the weight on your body matters. For example, carrying weight around the middle of your body near vital organs is particularly troublesome; whereas, carrying weight around your hips, thighs and booty are significantly less risky to your overall health These are also. areas of the body where women of color have historically carried a great proportion of their weight.
I say all that to say that the game may not be rigged, but it certainly ain’t fair. We need healthy examples of body image, weight and size that were created with us in mind. Until then, accept this love letter as well as the reminder that YOU GOT IT GOIN ON, GIRL.
Join Syd and special guest, mother, wellness coach and momfidance coach, Dr. Tangie Grate as they discuss how to make peace with and love on your body during EVERY phase of your wellness journey (otherwise known as life).

Every new year comes with it new opportunities for growth, improvement, elevation and re-invention….if you plan for it!! Join Syd this week in a very special BONUS episode as she shares her tips and tricks for how to be your BEST you in 2022.

Show Notes:
Syd has 7 tips for making the most out of your 2022:
Step 1 Reflection: Before you can set your goals or make a plan for 2022, you must first take inventory of your 2021. What did you do well? What did you do not so well? What made you happy? What made you miserable? What do you want to do more of? What could you live without? Ask yourself these questions before doing any 2022 planning.
Step 2 Let Go of Fear: Fear has NO place in 2022. Leave it in 2021.
Step 3 Be Honest With Yourself: Take a moment to be bare, naked, honest and vulnerable with yourself about what you TRULY want in your life. Not the things someone told you that you should want or the things you think are most likely to bring you success. Be honest about what you want no matter how big or small.
Step 4 Write it Down or Tell a Friend: Once you’ve determined what you want, write it down, tell a friend, make a vision board. Why? You need to make it REAL and you need some way of holding yourself accountable. If your goals only exist in your head, they become too easy to ignore.
Step 5 Sacrifice: Don’t be afraid to let go of some less important things in your life to make room for the more important things. Letting go of things is NEVER easy or comfortable, but if greatness were easy, everyone would be doing it.
Step 6 Be Selfish: Make yourself, your dreams, your goals, your needs, your wants, your finances…etc. your BIGGEST concern in 2022. EVERYTHING and EVERYONE else can take a backseat for just this year. Give yourself 100% for 12 months and see how much your life changes in just one year.
Step 7 DO IT: Go get it!! Do it, do something!! Don’t concern yourself with results or aesthetics, just put whatever plan you’ve articulated into action. ACTION is the key to manifestation.

Occupying spaces where you are one of a select few or the “only”…the only woman, the only person of color, the only non-binary person…etc. can be a truly isolating experience. The treatment you experience as a marginalized person can not only make you feel alone, but it can also make you feel ‘less than’ or like you don’t belong. This, my friends is the root of imposter syndrome. This syndrome will have you believing you are made of cheap plastic, when in fact, you AND your credentials are as strong, resilient and valuable as platinum. Never again will we allow imposter syndrome to make us see ourselves as anything but what we are, GOLDEN.
Season One Remix Episode 1.10, Feeling Real Fake: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome, discusses “Imposter Syndrome,” a disease most often prescribed to women characterized by internal feelings of inadequacy, inferiority and/or lack of belonging in the workplace that often ignores the external factors that contribute to these feelings. Join Syd and guest, Abimbola Oladokun, as they explore the internal and external factors that have contributed to their feelings of imposter syndrome and the tools/resources they have used to overcome those feelings.
Abimbola is a San Francisco-based tech attorney. She’s a lifelong learner, fashionista, traveler, and enjoys spending time with loved ones. When not posting various IG stories about how she sees the world, you can find her planning her next trip or reviewing Netflix for her next fix. You can find her on IG at @the.a.league.

Definition: According to the Harvard Business Review, Imposter syndrome is a label characterized by INTERNAL feelings of doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud. It disproportionately affects high-achieving people, who find it difficult to accept their accomplishments that is often assigned to women. One issue with the characterization is that it doesn’t take into account the EXTERNAL factors that ultimately contribute to these feelings for women.

How do you define heartbreak?
The point where your reality fails to meet your expectations.
The Reality
To begin our discussion, Daphne shared the realities of her marriage and her relationship with the church and how both realities failed to meet her expectations. She explained how the realities of both relationships included unhappiness, uneasiness, cycles of toxicity and her own failure to trust her intuition about the toxicity that surrounded her.
The Expectation
Daphne then described how her religious teachings guided her to believe that marriage was the pinnacle achievement of spirituality in terms of bringing her closest to God. Syd then explained how societal pressures are also placed on women to marry to gain access to status, acceptance and financial stability without placing the same value on seeking partnership for happiness, companionship, pleasure or compatibility.
Daphne then described religion as re-packaged patriarchy designed to uphold traditional systems of oppression for women that have been dismantled in recent years through political and economic revolutions. She also described how said re-packaged patriarchy aka religion kept her in a relationship that she knew wasn’t good for her.
Red Flags
She told us how her religion had conditioned her not to rely on her own thoughts and intuitions but to rely instead upon her religion to guide her through life and it was that conditioning that caused her to ignore certain red flags exhibited by her ex-husband. Red flags that many women ignore regardless of religious beliefs to increase chances of marriage. Daphne then described that the biggest red flag that she had experienced in her relationship was her distrust of her own intuition and her own behavior which had become uncharacteristic of her normally rational nature. She had started to behave in ways that she didn’t recognize.
Cycles of Toxicity
Toxicity in the context of relationships generally happens in cycles where a partner displays a toxic behavior and instead of fixing or addressing the behavior, the behavior is ignored, or forgiven and the relationship continues until the behavior is exhibited again and the cycle repeated.
The episode ended with the beginnings of an explanation on how to navigate breaking the cycle of toxicity and the steps Daphne took to end her toxic relationships with both her ex-husband and the church.

In today’s episode, our guest discussed her journey on turning her side hustle into a successful full-time entrepreneurial venture. Side hustling is a practice characterized by working a part time job or pursuing an entrepreneurial venture in addition to having a full-time job for the purpose of producing additional income.
We then discussed Ana’s entrepreneurial journey from IG influencer to blogger to side hustler to now CEO of her very own business, the Creator’s Coaching Co.
Ana then shared with us how she was able to monetize her social media platform on Instagram and through her blog through sponsored ads and other content on both her blog and IG. She then explained the four key ways to monetize a blog which are: 1) affiliate marketing, 2) digital products, 3) Google ads, and 4) brand partnerships.
She also told us about the importance of “owning your own real estate” online by having your own website that you control verses relying solely on social media to store/share your content. What is your dating philosophy?
Dating is gathering data. In order to make a competent decision about whether or not to continue dating a person, you need to ask very specific and direct questions as early as possible. You also need to be clear, direct and honest about the data that you are presenting to the other person.
What should we look for on a first date to determine whether a man is serious about dating?
The vibe—check to see if there is some chemistry between the two of you. Make sure that he is mentally stimulating you and that he seems genuinely interested in the conversation. If the vibe is right, Jephonne recommends asking specific questions as early as the first date to ensure that neither of you waste your time.
Some potential questions to ask are:
What do you look for in a guy to determine whether you should go on a date with him?
All potential suitors should display the following before making it to a first date:
What is the biggest mistake women make when dating?
Over-Accommodating-- Women tend to be over-accommodating in dating because of insecurity and fear of rejection. But the key to dating is setting a standard and/or boundary, giving the other person an opportunity to meet it and WALKING away FEARLESSLY when the standard is not met. Women are the prize. You do not have to bend over backwards to please a man. If he wants to date you, he will please YOU. He will meet YOUR standards.
Not being honest with themselves – It is important to be brutally honest with yourself about what YOU want, clearly communicating to your potential partners what you want and WALKING away from a potential partner if/when it becomes apparent he/she won’t be able to give you what you want/need. If you don’t want to wait around 2-3 years to get engaged, there’s no rule saying you have to.
What is your best advice for women who are still dating?
Be HONEST and UPFRONT at every stage of the process to weed out ALL THE MEN WHO DON’T DESERVE TO BE IN YOUR PRESENCE EARLY AND OFTEN.
Maintaining friendships as an adult is HARD WORK. After going to work, working out, drinking 64oz of water (most days), caring for the dog, building a side business and checking in with your mama, who has time to hang out!? This is a question that Syd and special guest will try to answer in Season One Remix Episode 3, Maintaining Real Friendships.
Join host, Syd Mack, and special guest, Krystyna Braxton, as they sit down to discuss the challenges of maintaining your friendships as a working, BOSS adult. Krystyna Braxton is a 7-year veteran in the Sports Licensing Industry with degrees from both Howard and Georgetown University.
You can find out more about and/or connect with Krystyna on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/krystynabraxton/.
Show Notes
What has been the most challenging aspect of maintaining your friendships as an adult?
• Physical Proximity—as friends begin to move to different states and cities and become increasingly more difficult to remain in contact
• Keeping up with Life’s Changes – As you move into your mid 20’s to early 30’s, you find that your friend’s lives begin to progress at different rates and it can be difficult to maintain your friendships with friends when you all are in different life stations.
• Managing Internal Insecurities When Comparing Yourself to Friends – When friends start to hit certain personal goals (i.e. obtaining that dream job, making that dream salary, having children, finding love, getting married…etc.) that you both aspire to attain before you, sometimes their achievement can expose insecurity and/or anxiety about your current position in life. This can cause you to question where you are and you may start finding yourself saying things like, “Why isn’t this happening for me,” or “When is it my turn?” This may be an opportunity for you to address your insecurities and also to find friends who can meet you where you are
• Financial Status – When you’re the “broke friend” it can be difficult to maintain relationships with friends when they want to indulge in activities (i.e. birthday dinners, brunch, travel…etc.) that you cannot afford) How much time do you actually get to spend with your friends as an adult?
• Growing In Different Directions -- As you get older you find that you naturally start to spend less time with friends as everyone is spending the majority of their time managing their own lives, families and careers.
• Priorities Change -- You may also notice that your desire to hang out on weekends has declined as your priorities shift and change from being social to career growth, financial stability and recharging from long weeks at work. This is normal behavior and should not be a point of concern. You will also find that real friends will understand and the two of you won’t miss a beat.

Summary of Today’s Show
What is a boundary?
A boundary is a very clear, proactive, communicated stance that is tied to what you critically need to fulfill your purpose and it can be a belief or an action.
The most basic function of a boundary is that it serves as protection.
Why are boundaries critical to self-care?
Boundaries are critical to self-care because there is no way to sustain addressing what you critically need if you don’t set a boundary that’s also sustainable
Why is it so difficult to set boundaries?
Setting boundaries is difficult because doing so requires courage. Courage that sometimes cannot be established on your own. Often times, finding the courage you need to establish a clearly defined boundary requires you to ask for help. This can be especially difficult if you tend to be a perfectionist and place immense amounts of pressure on yourself to not make a mistake. This is because perfectionism requires that you not share your struggles with others. Others that you may need to establish sustainable boundaries and a strategy for self-care.
What does it say about you if you have difficulty setting boundaries?
It says that you’re normal.
How do we set a boundary?
Knowing how and when to set a boundary requires you to develop a strategy around your critical self-care needs. Anana recommends evaluating your self-care needs by assessing what you need based on the seven self-care categories. The seven categories of self-care are: (1) Spiritual, (2) Emotional, (3) Artistic, (4) Economic, (5) Physical, (6) Educational, and (7) Social. An assessment of your needs should be taken EVERY DAY and your boundaries should be placed around those needs.

Episode 11 of the Sugar Free Podcast, Feeling Real Fake: Battling Imposter Syndrome, defines “Imposter Syndrome,” a disease most often prescribed to women characterized by internal feelings of inadequacy, inferiority and/or lack of belonging in the workplace that often ignores the external factors that contribute to these feelings. Join Syd and guest, Abimbola Oladokun, as they explore the internal and external factors that have contributed to their feelings of imposter syndrome and the tools/resources they have used to combat those feelings.

SUPPORT WOMEN. PROTECT WOMEN. EMPOWER WOMEN.
A few weeks ago, a Texas Law went into effect that severely limits a woman’s right to abortion and we here at the Sugar Free Podcast could not let such an important moment in the history of women’s rights pass without having a REAL discussion about it. The Texas Law, prohibits women from having access to abortion once the unborn child has a detectable fetal heartbeat. This point for most women comes at the sixth week of pregnancy when most women don’t even know they’re pregnant. This, for most women will amount to either a complete loss of the right to an abortion or the loss of a reasonable amount of time to consider having an abortion. THIS AINT RIGHT AND WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT.
Having the right to choose what you do with your body and when is one of the most fundamental rights a human can have. The recent passage and reaffirming of very restrictive abortion laws in Texas threatens to all but remove a crucial component of this fundamental right for women – their right to choose whether or not to have an abortion. Syd is going to 'lower the veil' on abortions and make them a real, tangible, thing for those who may not be familiar with the laws surrounding abortion or the story of a woman who has had one. After tuning into this episode, you should be concerned about the health and safety of women in Texas if not downright outraged.
Episode 9 of the Sugar Free Podcast, Really Humanizing Abortion-- Discussing the Impact of the New Abortion Laws in Texas, is a SPECIAL episode that delves deeply into the negative impact that more restrictive laws on abortion can have on young women and their abilities to live a life of their choosing. Join Syd and very special guest, Tiffany Clayton, as they put a name and a face to the process of abortion by having a vulnerable conversation about Tiffany’s abortion journey and her road to finding wholeness and peace post-abortion.

Let's face it, the cost of life is way too daggone high, job security is a thing of the past and career satisfaction is a luxury reserved for the dreamers, schemers and believers of this world. For most of us our 9 to 5's aren't providing enough coin or satisfaction for us to live the lives we've always dreamed of. If that sounds familiar, friend... it's time to hustle!
Side hustling, which is characterized by working a part time job or pursuing an entrepreneurial venture in addition to having a full time job, has become one of the most popular ways to not only earn some extra coin, but also to chase your dreams. Join Syd as she sits down with social media influencer, blogger and ULTIMATE side hustler, Ana Baugus Ochoa, for a conversation on how to leverage your 9 to 5 to chase your entrepreneurial dreams and earn some extra coin through side-hustling.

Episode 3 of the Sugar Free Podcast is all about setting sustainable, clearly defined boundaries. When Drake said, “No New friends,” He lied! There comes a time in everyone’s life when they realize it’s time to level up, reduce or expand their friend circle based on their current platonic relationship needs.
Join, Host, Syd Mack and Special Guest, Krystyna Braxton, as they follow up their conversation from Episode 1, Maintaining Real Friendships, with a discuss on the awkward, annoying two-step that is trying to make new friends as an adult in Episode 2 Making Real Friends.
There is nothing more precious and special than the family that we get to choose but trying to maintain friendships as an adult is HARD. I gotta pay my bills, call my mama everyday, feed the dog, drink all this daggone water, eat air, workout and try to keep up with other grown folks too?? Who has the time…or energy for all that? But, I suppose, for the real ones, we find the time. Join host, Syd Mack, as she sits down with special guest, Krystyna Braxton, to discuss maintaining friendships as a working adult.
