In this final episode of the month (and “season” - see below), hosts Alan Vukas and Michelle Wadleigh have an enlightening conversation around passion, purpose, and living authentically.

Key Points:

  • How to recognize what you're truly passionate about in life? Passion is often found in activities where you lose track of time because you're so engaged and fulfilled.

  • The importance of untangling passion from profit and progress. Passion has an innate purpose even if it's not financially profitable.

  • Embracing your passion allows you to give others permission to be bold and pursue their interests too.

  • Overcoming limitations, fears, and the "glass ceiling" that holds many people back from fully living their purpose. The only true limits are the ones we place on ourselves.

  • Valuable teachings from Emerson on expressing your convictions and living boldly. Our authentic self is waiting to be expressed.

  • The role of spiritual practices in building self-love and compassion to move beyond suffering. Suffering becomes unnecessary when you believe in yourself.

  • Seizing each day and making space for your interests and curiosity. Life is about navigating distractions to live passionately.

We all have more potential waiting to be unlocked. The world needs your unique gifts and talents.

Dear Listeners & Friends,

This episode of the Living Out Loud Show is our final show, at least for now.

Michelle and I want to take a moment to express our deepest gratitude for your support and engagement over the past several months. It has been a privilege and joy to connect with you each week, diving into conversations that are close to our hearts.

Your participation and insights not only enriched our conversations but also inspired us in many ways. We hope that you've found as much value in these episodes as we had in creating them. This may be our final episode, but it's certainly not the end of our journey together.

While we take a brief hiatus from this show to recharge and plan for what's next, and upcoming, we encourage you to continue exploring your passions and unlocking your potential.

Be sure to follow us on social media (our links below) for updates on future episodes, projects, and other exciting ventures that are emerging from us exploring our passions and living out loud.

Until then, thank you for being an essential part of our community. We look forward to connecting with you again soon.

With love and gratitude,

Alan & Michelle

In this episode, our hosts, Alan Vukas and Michelle Wadleigh, explore blocks and barriers to vulnerability, share personal stories, and provide practical tips for embracing vulnerability in your own life.

Episode Show Notes"There is something within you beyond all doubt and fear, something which has never been limited by your acts or destroyed by your feeling. This is the only something that can make you whole" (Ernest Holmes, This Thing Called You, pg. 4).

I. The importance of authenticity and the birthplace of vulnerability within us"Vulnerability is a state of emotional exposure that comes with a certain degree of uncertainty. It involves a person's willingness to accept the emotional risk that comes from being open and willing to love and be loved." (Brene Brown)

II. Barriers to Vulnerability

  • Fear - fear of opinions, rejection, not being good enough
  • Uncertainty - Our love for certainty and hamper our vulnerability
  • Comparison - Comparing ourselves to others may cause us to hold back or "play small"
  • Other examples of barriers to vulnerability:
    • Perfectionism - “don’t let them see you sweat”
    • Lack of trust: Trust is essential for vulnerability. Past betrayals
    • Cultural/Society “norms”
    • Low self-esteem/Unworthiness

“Come to the edge," he said.
“We can't, we're afraid!" they responded.
“Come to the edge," he said.
“We can't, We will fall!" they responded.
"Come to the edge," he said.
And so they came.
And he pushed them.
And they flew.”
― Guillaume Apollinaire

Be gentle with yourself, especially where it is not physically safe or your vulnerable self hasn’t been earned!

III. Courage and Bravery - turning inward and speaking our truth out loud

"Bravery doesn't ask us to abandon who we are. It means living from the inside out. Brave means, in every uncertain moment, turning inward, feeling for the Knowing, and speaking it out loud. Since the Knowing is specific, personal, and ever-changing, so is bravery. Whether you are brave or not cannot be judged by people on the outside. Sometimes being brave requires letting the crowd think you're a coward. Sometimes being brave means letting everyone down but yourself." - Glennon Doyle

In this week’s episode, while Michelle is away, Alan offers some thoughts about another barrier to our authentic living: shame and unworthiness.

Weekly Reading: Living the Science of Mind, "What We Believe (continued)" - Pages 98-106 (ISBN 0-87516-627-X)

Weekly Show Notes:

“Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are.” (The Gifts of Imperfection, Brene Brown, Pg. 50)

The Story of the Swan: The swan grew up amongst a flock of ducks, feeling different and unworthy, until it saw its reflection in a lake and realized its inherent worthiness. (adapted from "The Ugly Duckling" by Hans Christian Andersen) - We are all SWANS!

Brene Brown's definition of shame: "Shame is the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing that we are flawed and therefore unworthy of love and belonging." (The Gifts of Imperfection, Pg. 39)

Shame or unworthiness can prevent us from living authentically:

  • Fear of expressing true emotions
  • Struggling with self-care
  • Seeking validation from others
  • Perfectionism!

Some actions to take to release shame and unworthiness and embrace our authentic selves:

  1. Create an inventory of your triggers: Awareness is the first step in transforming these feelings and reclaiming your power. Recognizing and understanding what triggers feelings of shame and unworthiness within you can help you face them head-on.
  2. Share your story with a trusted person: "Shame needs three things to grow out of control in our lives: secrecy, silence, and judgment… We need to share our experience; shame loses power when it is spoken." (The Gifts of Imperfection, Pg. 40)
  3. Affirm your worthiness: Regularly remind yourself of your inherent worth through affirmations, such as "I am worthy. I am loved. I am enough."

Ernest Holmes: ”You belong to the universe in which you live, you are one with the Creative Genius back of this vast array of ceaseless motion, this original flow of life" (This Thing Called You, Pg. 3).

Our worthiness is our birthright, and it is not dependent on external factors or the approval of others.

In this episode, Alan flys solo while Michelle is traveling on vacation. Be a part of this week's conversation about how, "Boundaries Build Bridges."

Setting healthy boundaries is essential for building and maintaining authentic and fulfilling relationships. When we set boundaries, we are communicating our needs and values to others, which allows for a deeper level of understanding and respect.

Book: Setting Boundaries Will Set You Free: The Ultimate Guide to Telling the Truth, Creating Connection, and Finding Freedom by Nancy Levin

Science of Mind magazine

Weekly Reading: Living the Science of Mind, "What We Believe (continued)" - Pages 91-98 (ISBN 0-87516-627-X)

Weekly Show Notes:

“Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are.” (The Gifts of Imperfection, Brene Brown, Pg. 50)

Clarifying our boundaries can lead to more authentic and fulfilling relationships:

  • Builds Trust
  • Honors Authenticity
  • Reduces Resentment
  • Encourages Mutual Respect

Boundaries are not about building walls or shutting people out, but rather about creating a safe space where both parties can feel respected and heard.

Its not possible to have compassion without boundaries and accountability!

There are several different types of boundaries, including emotional, physical, and time boundaries.

Each of us already have boundaries! It is up to us to discover and uncover them. Ask yourself:

  • What am I feeling? (Emotionally and physically)
  • What do I need/want in this situation, at this time?
  • What is important? What do I value in this situation for myself/all?

You can easily begin where you feel irritated, frustrated - a boundary has been crossed.

Clarifying/setting boundaries can sometimes be difficult, but it is necessary for our own well-being and for the health of our relationships.

Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability, and authenticity. If we want greater clarity in our purpose or deeper and more meaningful spiritual lives, vulnerability is the path.” - Brené Brown, Daring Greatly

Considerations when setting and communicating boundaries:

  1. Be clear and concise
  2. Use "I" statements.
  3. Be willing to negotiate.
  4. Stick to your boundaries.
  5. Practice self-care.

Setting boundaries is an act of self-love and can lead to more authentic and fulfilling relationships.

In this episode, Alan and Michelle talk about "masks." While we may wear masks in celebration, for fun, and to be safe. Masks that we wear for our hearts may keep us safe until they don’t. Vulnerability empowers us to drop the mask and let our light shine.

“Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are.” (The Gifts of Imperfection, Brene Brown, Pg. 50)

Triggers to Mask Up:
1.Fear of rejection
2.External pressures
3.Lack of self-awareness
4.Self-doubt
5.Internalized messages

Dropping the Masks and Bushels
-Spiritual living is one of subtraction
-Masks are worn for different reasons, physical and otherwise
-Hiding our true selves can become the norm and prevent us from expressing ourselves fully. They can become our identity which is NOT our authentic self.
-Hiding our light keeps us stuck in the past and from experiencing connection and intimacy

Examples of Masks We May Wear:

  1. Hiding our true feelings and emotions – presenting a false front to the world and stuffing our anger or sadness so others don’t see it. I’m OK when I’m not OK.
  2. Pretending to be someone you're not.
  3. Avoiding conflict - Avoiding any disagreements or uncomfortable situations. Staying quiet when someone is mistreating you of not speaking up when you disagree
  4. People-pleasing - prioritize the needs and desires of others over their own. Saying Yes when you don’t want to or sacrificing yourself to be accommodating
  5. Keeping secrets - People often keep secrets from others, whether it's because they're ashamed of something or because they fear being judged. When we are not fully honest and transparent with others, it can lead to feelings of guilt and disconnection.

Means to Dropping the Masks
-Vulnerability is the path!

  • Courageously allowing hidden parts of ourselves to be seen
-Feeling our feelings and clarifying our boundaries
-Practicing being vulnerable and becoming less sensitive to the opinions of others

Affirmation: "I have the courage to be vulnerable and let my light shine"

In this week's episode, Alan and Michelle continue their discussion around this month's practice for living out loud...Cultivating Authenticity. Listen as they discuss things that can hold us back from expressing ourselves authentically, and mindsets to adopt to support us to let our light shine.

“Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are.” (The Gifts of Imperfection, Brene Brown, Pg. 50)

Possible Barriers to living authentically:

  1. Fear of rejection: Fear of being rejected by others can prevent individuals from expressing their true selves, especially if their beliefs and values differ from those around them.
  2. External pressures: External pressures from family, friends, or society can also inhibit us. This can be especially true for individuals from marginalized communities who may face discrimination or stigma for expressing their authentic identities.
  3. Lack of self-awareness: Without self-awareness, individuals may engage in behaviors or make choices that are not in line with their true selves.
  4. Self-doubt: Self-doubt can lead individuals to settle for less than what they want or to avoid opportunities that could lead to personal growth and fulfillment.
  5. Internalized messages: Internalized messages, such as negative self-talk or messages from past experiences, can also prevent individuals from living authentically.
