In this week's episode, Ryan Barton, CIO at New Charter, shares what the MSP of the future actually looks like. After building and exiting his own MSP, Ryan founded an AI lab that was acquired by New Charter, where he now leads AI strategy across 35 operating companies and 1,500 employees. He breaks down why MSP economics are still 85-90% labor, how his lab built AI tooling years before the market caught up, and why the biggest barrier to AI adoption isn't technical, it's cultural. We also dig into agents as coworkers, why leaders can't delegate AI strategy, outcome-based pricing, and the two motions every MSP must win to survive the next decade.

Most MSPs are still “watching” AI—Shane Naugher is already helping clients with it (and also buliding a second company around it!).
But, that's not where he started out. After nearly 25 years in business, Shane made a major pivot. He realized he wasn’t building a company—he was building a lifestyle business, something that wouldn't carry over to his family and loved ones. Also, Shane shares the many ways his MSP is embracing AI and helping clients take advantage of it. But we have to be careful that we're not learning it since it's the new flashy tool, but studying it to discover the business outcomes that your partners would benefit from.
Here are 5 powerful lessons I learned from Shane in this episode:

👀 How do you scale from an average MSP ($1.2M in revenue) to $18M all while slowly taking work off your plate? That’s exactly what Will Nobles, CEO of Vector Choice, did—and his secret wasn’t just hard work. It was a total mindset shift.
Will went from working non-stop to building a team and process that runs without him, unlocking the freedom to start multiple businesses, coach MSPs, and spend more time with his family.
Here are the five biggest lessons I learned from Will about breaking past growth plateaus and building a business that doesn’t own you:

👀 I’ve been interviewing high-growth MSPs, but a certain part of Nick Regali’s story really stood out. He’s running a lean team, nearly doubling the revenue per employee of most MSPs, all while traveling the country in his RV and managing offices on both coasts.
How? It wasn’t luck—it was intentional leadership, culture building, and mindset shifts. And it didn't happen overnight either.
Here are the five biggest lessons I learned from Nick about scaling smarter, not harder:
✅ Culture Isn’t Fluff—It’s Strategy – Nick rebuilt his entire team around core values that drive performance.
✅ The Right People Make Freedom Possible – Running an MSP from an RV across the country? That only works if you’ve got a team you fully trust.
✅ Perfection Kills Progress
✅ Let Go of Bad Clients—Even if It Hurts – Not every dollar is worth it.
💡 If you’re an MSP CEO or executive chasing both business success AND personal freedom, this episode is for you.

Here are several powerful takeaways from my conversation with Marv about defining success on your own terms:

As we continue our journey to interview 100 of the top MSPs on the planet, my mission brings me to Jason Caras, CEO of IT Authorities. Jason didn’t just grow his MSP to seven figures—he and his partner managed to hit eight figures. But here’s the question: what did Jason and his partner do in their MSP that led to such massive growth? It came down to three things they executed really well: 1). Documentation: Every process was documented, down to turning off the AC. This enabled them to grow faster since there was one consistent way for things to be done. 2). Automation: If a task could be automated to allow for better efficiency, they went for it. 3). Culture: Their culture was focused on personal development and treating others as they would want to be treated. Their priority was to work on themselves before working on the MSP.

In this week's episode of MSP Mindset, Corey Kirkendoll, one of the top 500 MSPs, shares the unique approach he took when starting his MSP and how it continues to shape his company today. There were two elements he focused on early that many of us ignore... 1). He began by intentionally saying "no" to clients who weren't the right fit, foregoing short-term financial gains because he had a clear vision for his business. 2). Corey emphasized the importance of building trust with clients and integrating IT into their overall business strategy, rather than merely providing technical support. Looking ahead, he shares how his company is now generating revenue by helping clients leverage AI to enhance their business operations, and he was able to start having these conversations because of point 2 and how he integrated himself into their business strategy.

What are you doing now to prepare your MSP for exit? If nothing, that’s probably not a good idea… It’s always good to be prepared because you never know when that perfect offer may come, or on the opposite side, if you get sick and can’t run the business anymore. If your MSP isn’t functioning in a mature state, then don’t expect to get what you want in the sale. But, if you prepare now, you can make sure your MSP’s value is where it needs to be.
