In episode 17 of The Word Podcast, Brendan Ward and Seth Williams invited Scotty Jones from RE/MAX Platinum as a guest to discuss the latest happenings in the Boston real estate market. The conversation mainly centered around a lawsuit that has significant implications for the industry. In the Moehrl vs. the National Association of Realtors, et al., case, the plaintiffs are seeking more than $13 billion in damages because they paid a cost, the buyer's agent commission, which would have been paid by homebuyers in a competitive market. U.S. District Judge Andrea R. Wood recently declared the lawsuit a class action, which increases its scope and potential impact. The lawsuit affects thousands of home sellers who paid a commission between March 6, 2015, and December 31, 2020, to specified companies and MLSs, as well as "current and future" sellers engaged with those entities. During the podcast, Scotty Jones and the hosts discussed the likely outcomes of the lawsuit and how to navigate it. The conversation also covered coaching realtors, the cadence of training, and onboarding new agents. Scotty Jones is the Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Platinum, which serves Eastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Southern New Hampshire.
