When the threads of our lives unravel, it's the power of human connection that weaves them back together, stronger and more vibrant than before. Emer Halpenny's story, which we're honored to share with you, embodies this truth. Her tale of love, loss, and the resilience of the human spirit begins with a decision that could shatter a heart - the decision to place her baby boy for adoption in 1988. Her journey didn't end there; rather, it continued through silent years that eventually blossomed into healing, and a narrative that she bravely unfolds with us. Emer's courage to voice her past not only served as her catharsis but paved the way for an unexpected reconnection with her son, reinforcing the unbreakable bond of family.

Our conversation with Emer turns the pages of her life, revealing the complexities of a reunion decades in the making. The candid recount of her son reaching out, the role her daughters played in bridging their communication, and the gradual transition from tentative exchanges to regular, comfortable interactions, offers a heartfelt look into the delicate dance of rebuilding relationships. Emer's experience is a testament to the idea that our choices do not define us; rather, it's how we grow from them and the love we share that truly shapes our legacy.

Finally, we reflect upon the societal and familial tapestries that backdrop stories like Emer's. We recognize the courage required to face and share such personal narratives. Emer's openness provides a guiding light for anyone traversing the path of adoption and reunion, especially in an era where social media can bridge the divides of time and distance. Join us and our incredible guest, Emer Halpenny, as we celebrate the joyous revelations of life coming full circle and the remarkable endurance of love through the trials of time.

Life's a dance, and sometimes it's Irish! Lisa's kids have been leaping and jigging their way through the competitive world of Irish dancing, and it's led us all the way to the World Championships in Scotland. But beneath the tartan and trophies lies a conversation that needs to be had about the pressures these young dancers face. So, buckle up as we celebrate Ellie's awe-inspiring 10th place world ranking and take you behind the scenes of the intensity and passion of the dance community. And let's not forget Jack, who's gearing up to give his own performances everything he's got. Pam also has exciting news to share about her son Kylan and his recent dance awards!

Turning away from the stage, we sat down for a deep heart-to-heart sparked by the "Quiet on Set" documentary, unpacking the troubling tales of abuse within the walls of Nickelodeon. It's a tough topic, but one that needs the light of day, not just for the kids in the spotlight but for their parents navigating the treacherous waters of showbiz. We also tackle our collective addiction to the screen - from the grip of binge-watching to the otherworldly fascination with reality TV, like the unconventional lives in "Sister Wives." Strap in for a ride through the real-life drama that unfolds both on and off-screen.

Lastly, we're all about the nuance of the unsaid in the art of communication, and the 'power of the pause.' Ever write an email only to leave it unsent? There's healing in those unsent words and a wisdom in waiting that we're learning to embrace. We also bring the laughter with a round of "would you rather," where we debate the lesser of two quirky evils. And because a trip down memory lane is always a hoot, we reminisce about past trends that had us in stitches. Join us for this rollercoaster of emotions, from reflective to riotous, as we explore the beautiful mess that is Middle Ageish.

Have you ever felt your heart pound with unease while walking to your car at night? We have, and it's prompted a crucial conversation about women's self-defense that we couldn't wait to share with you. Joining us on the Middle Ageish Podcast is Rebecca Griffin, who shares her empowering journey into Brazilian jiu-jitsu and how earning her pink belt changed her life. We tackle the serious subject of personal safety with candid discussions about confidence, boundary setting, and the sobering realities that make these skills necessary.

During our engaging chat, Rebecca unpacked strategies that go beyond physical defense—like 'stop, block and frame'—to assertively communicate personal space. We confront the societal pressures that often silence women's instincts to prioritize safety over politeness. It's not just about knowing how to react but also about changing how we prepare and educate our children, especially boys, on respecting boundaries. The stories we exchange are real, raw, and a testament to why self-defense is an essential skill for women today.

Wrapping up the episode, we explore the unfortunate truth about bystander apathy and its implications for personal responsibility. So, whether you're new to the concept or looking to reinforce your skills, this episode promises to be an eye-opener on the importance of being prepared for anything life might throw your way.

Welcome to the Middle Age(ish) Podcast, hosted by Ashley Bedosky, Lisa Kelly, Dr. Pam Wright, and Trisha Kennedy Roman. In this episode, we talk with relationship expert Lair Torrent, LMFT.

Wow! This episode is a must listen for anyone of any age who has or will have a relationship with another individual! Seriously, we learned so much about relationships and communication with others in our short time with Lair.

Lair has a unique approach to therapy and counseling, combining Eastern based mindfulness practices and western clinical models to create a powerful approach to healing. We found the points he made about how we communicate with our partners fascinating and very useful for any relationship at any stage.

When it comes to trying to win an argument, we have all probably been guilty of wanting to be right and “win” the fight. Lair made a very good point that if one wins the fight and the other loses, nobody really wins.

“Competition really can't live in love. If you really love this person, why would you want them to lose anything?” –Lair Torrent, LMFT

When it comes to being middle age(ish) and older, we all know our bodies change. We loved Lair’s approach to keeping the physical attraction alive in any stage of life. He talked about being mindful and loving in the narrative we form in our thoughts about our partner with regards to their attractiveness.

“Gravity's going to happen, age is starting to happen. We want to be able to look upon our partners with kindness and compassion, empathy, and understanding. We want to be graceful within those thoughts.”—Lair Torrent, LMFT

Lair really pointed out how our inner self, our experiences as a child, and our experiences throughout life can really play a part in how we communicate in a relationship. Many times, we don’t realize exactly “who” is showing up or what we are truly fighting about. He talked about how unconsciously, we bring about parts of us that have been wounded or unfulfilled in the past. His approach is to help us to discover these parts to better understand our communication.

Let me tell you that all of the Middle Age(ish) hosts had Lair’s book ordered right after the interview. Whether you want to keep a healthy relationship healthy, work on a struggling relationship, or want to prepare for future relationships, we think his approach is so incredibly helpful!

Clarissa's accomplishments and success in the entertainment industry is what dreams are made of, yet she is so incredibly grounded and focused on what truly matters in this life. Welcome to the Middle Age(ish) Podcast, hosted by Ashley Bedosky, Lisa Kelly, Dr. Pam Wright, and Trisha Kennedy Roman. In this episode, we talk with Josh Shelton - Certified Threat Manager.

When we arranged this interview, we knew that this was an important topic, but we were cautious to avoid any hot political debates. We were shocked and horrified to hear the reports coming in of a shooting in the local Atlanta area just hours before we began this scheduled interview. This further solidified for us that this was a topic we wanted to discuss for our listeners.

It seems that those of us classified as "Middle Age(ish)" and older maintained some sense of innocence in our youth, not hearing so much of violent attacks in the media during our younger years. Our children and younger generations have not been as fortunate, with active shooter drills in school taking place like the fire and tornado drills that we all were accustomed to.

This discussion was not a political talk, but a humanity talk, with a deep concern for what appears to be a growing problem in the US. Our guest speaker has a strong passion for addressing the problem of violence and bringing more awareness of taking a proactive approach to violence prevention through organizations such as The Association of Threat Assessment Professionals, (ATAP).

Our hope with this episode is that listeners affiliated with businesses, schools, places of worship, etc, will visit the ATAP website, look at ways to form these multidisciplinary behavioral threat assessment teams, and for us to collectively as concerned humans, regardless of political party, become more proactive rather than reactive to these devastating acts of violence.

Welcome to the Middle Age(ish) Podcast, hosted by Ashley Bedosky, Lisa Kelly, Dr. Pam Wright, and Trisha Kennedy Roman. In this episode, we talk with James Preece, the UK’s Top Celebrity Dating Coach and Dating Expert.

We had an absolute blast talking with James! He is charismatic, easy to talk to, and gives real and honest advice on dating and finding a partner. “He’s actually like your best friend just telling you what to do.” – Lisa Kelly

With nearly two decades of experience in matchmaking and as a dating coach, James had a lot of good information for us, from his top 3 secrets to dating, looking for green flags, and moving on when we are not treated with respect. As pet lovers, we loved his puppy analogy for men!

“I say treat men like puppies because when they're young and when they're new, they're trying to impress you. So you do what? Guide them in the right way. Be nice to them. If they’re nice to you, you pay them attention. If they're not, then you don't. So you reward good behavior because after three months in, it's very difficult to change someone's behavior in the way that they treat you.”—James Preece

James talked about the importance of continuing to date our partners, spouses, and significant others to keep the relationship alive, because all successful relationships take work and effort.

One of our favorite messages from James was that it is never too late to find love and there is someone for everyone. “Don't think because you're in your forties or fifties, even sixties, even nineties, that you're not going to find somebody. There is someone out there for everybody. There are millions and millions and millions of people that are single and looking. Just get yourself out there and start looking.”—James Preece

Welcome to the Middle Age(ish) Podcast, hosted by Ashley Bedosky, Lisa Kelly, Dr. Pam Wright, and Trisha Kennedy Roman. In this episode, we talk with Becky Loveland, mom of Kelson “Bub” Loveland.

CONTENT WARNING >This episode discusses grief and the loss of a child.

Webster’s Dictionary defines Kelson (variant spelling of Keelson) as a longitudinal structure running above and fastened to the keel of a ship in order to stiffen and strengthen its framework. The name couldn’t have been more fitting for a very special and strong little boy named Kelson “Bub” Loveland. Kelson’s strength and the love from his family, allowed him to beat the odds and live on this earth for almost 9 years. Although he was non-verbal, he spoke to the hearts of everyone he encountered, and his legacy continues to touch the lives and hearts of so many.

Kelson’s mom, Becky Loveland, lovingly shared Kelson’s story with us, including some of the many medical issues and surgeries that Kelson faced. She also gave us a glimpse of Kelson’s big personality, from his favorite toys to his happy squeals.

Becky is truly such an amazing example of strength, faith, and love. She is truly a light of hope. “I have made a choice. I'm wearing a little bracelet right now that says, Choose Joy. I have a shirt that says Choose Joy, because I have to choose that.”—Becky Loveland

Through their own unimaginable grief, Andy (Kelson’s dad), Becky, and Emma Sue (Kelson’s big sister) rallied together with their families and friends to honor Kelson’s life in big ways!

They formed the non-profit organization, Added Strength Inc., in honor of the meaning behind Kelson’s name. Through this organization, they have touched so many lives by raising money for various charities that had impacted Kelson’s life along the way.

Through Added Strength Inc., they created Bub’s Run, a 5K and 1-mile race held each year that is dedicated to the inclusion of all athletes of any ability. They created Bub’s Buddies, and through a partnership with Speed for Need, athletes who are wheelchair-bound can participate with teams of volunteers to push their chairs to the finish line.

2023 Bub’s Run will be held very soon, on Saturday, May 6, 2023. The location is North Cobb Christian School, 4500 Eagle Dr., Kennesaw GA 30144, and will begin at 7:30am. This year’s cause is the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

While we know many of our listeners are in other states and even other countries, we would love for you to join the hosts of Middle Ageish, who have registered as virtual runners for the race. Together we can help honor the legacy of this remarkable little boy, and help Added Strength Inc. continue to touch the lives of many.

Welcome to the Middle Age(ish) Podcast, hosted by Ashley Bedosky, Lisa Kelly, Dr. Pam Wright, and Trisha Kennedy Roman. In this episode we talk with Actress, Comedian, and Life Coach Jamee Damron.

Jamee was an absolute hoot to talk to! She has taken the most difficult parts of her life and learned how to grow and become stronger from those losses and challenges. Her experience in theater and stand up comedy have helped her take a unique approach to working with her coaching clients and helping them face their fears sometimes with improv.

"There is a CEO sitting inside of you because of what you have experienced. You have courage, you have empathy, and you have overcome loss."– Jamee DamronWe had so much fun reminiscing about things we experienced when we were younger, from corded phones, typing class in school, to Casey Kasem's top 40 Countdown! We all agreed that we were glad we were born when we did and are at this Middle Ageish point in life.

We had fun laughing about the crazy things we experience as we reach this Middle Ageish period of life, from forgetfulness to weight gain. Despite all of the changes we go through, psychologically and physically, we all agreed that at this point we are becoming more confident than we have ever been. "You gain confidence in your older age. Then obviously you have to add humor, because life just sucks if you don't have some humor." – Ashley Bedosky

Welcome to the Middle Age(ish) Podcast, hosted by Ashley Bedosky, Lisa Kelly, Dr. Pam Wright, and Trisha Kennedy Roman. In this episode we talk with Alena LeBlanc and Heather Riggs all about fashion and style.

Alena is a personal stylist and fashion designer who works with career women to help them look and feel their best. She is the founder of LeBlanc Label. Heather is the founder of HER Style, LLC and host of HER Style Podcast. As a 15-year Certified Image Consultant and Color Specialist, Heather helps ambitious women show up ─ and get dressed every day ─ with confidence. Both women offered great tips to help us pick the right colors and styles to fit our individual body types.

“I like getting creative using things that you already own. So I'll try to make like three different looks for them that they would never have thought of. So it gives the piece more life.” – Alena LeBlanc

We talked about each of our own fashion challenges and what is important to each of us to make us feel more confident about the way we look. Ashley talked about how good shoes and a handbag can create an outfit for her to make her feel her best. Lisa noted hair and make-up was more important to her than the outfit. Trisha shared her idea of “holiday pants” only to find out that her genius idea had already been taken by Joey on Friends. Pam gave us the story of how she got the black eye that she perfectly coordinated with her shirt!

Heather noted that today’s technology has allowed her to have clients from all over the world. ”That's the great thing about today. You know, you can work with people from anywhere using Zoom and things like that. It's really easy to be able to just go right into your client's wardrobes and see what they're working with.” – Heather Riggs

As per the norm our conversation took lots of hilarious pivots, going from discussing celebrity style to thongs to being completely devastated to learn that Ireland doesn’t really have leprechauns! Hence, the unique name of this episode.

Welcome to the Middle Age(ish) Podcast, hosted by Ashley Bedosky, Lisa Kelly, Dr. Pam Wright, and Trisha Kennedy Roman. In this episode we talk with Traci Andreason, MSN, FNP-C, who is an expert in all things rejuvenation of the face and also the "lady parts."

This episode was prefaced with the fact that we would be discussing anatomy of genitourinary and sexual function, and this particular episode would not be appropriate for children. We also let our male listeners know that, while this episode focuses on female anatomy, it might offer benefit to them by giving insight into issues a female might be going through that they were not aware of.Traci's practice , Rise Rejuvenation Center, is in Utah. She offers a wide array of injectable and laser therapies in her practice. She is so incredibly knowledgeable, down to Earth, and passionate about what she does. She has a way of making uncomfortable conversations comfortable, with her frank and honest discussions with her patients.

We discussed the issues that women face, such as stress incontinence, and how women just deal with it as an expected change. Traci responded with "We need to change that! Friends don't let friends pee their pants!"

We had a lot of laughs during the recording of this episode, from discussing our own lack of knowledge of the aging process of the "lady parts," being enlightened by Lisa on her latest discovery about female anatomy, and listening to Traci's incredibly educational information with a touch of her natural comedy. She is just an incredibly cool woman with a passion for helping other women!

"My real plea for women is to not do what I did, which was to wait until you have two mini strokes and have that be a result of your over-functioning and stress and not taking care of yourself. That is what brought me to a really full transformation in my own life from a health perspective, emotional, cognitive, the whole 360. I had to really, really prioritize it ." Megan Ragsdale - Author of Risky WomenMegan talks about the conditioning we have had as women throughout our lives to play it safe and focus on being who we think everyone wants and needs us to be. "Dropping the expectations and really just taking that risk of being who you really are, I mean, that's the most rebellious act that any of us can do as women." Megan Ragsdale - Author of Risky WomenWe all so enjoyed our time with Megan and hope we can chat with her again in the future. She was an absolute joy and a total ceiling buster!

Welcome to the Middle Age(ish) Podcast, hosted by Ashley Bedosky, Lisa Kelly, Dr. Pam Wright, and Trisha Kennedy Roman. In this episode, we speak with Charla Turner - author of Trustworthy, How to deepen the relationships you need and avoid the ones you don't.

Trust is truly at the heart of every relationship, whether personal or professional. Without trust, meaningful relationships are not sustainable. Charla Turner gives a raw and honest discussion of her trust journey and such valuable insight into the significance of trust in our relationships.

We discuss some of the challenges we have all personally faced with trust and communication and some of the factors that bring about "trust issues." How do you trust? "That's the crux of the book....How can you know if you can trust somebody? You gotta trust them!" – Charla Turner - Author of TrustworthyAshley and Trisha joke that they both want to be Irish because Lisa's glass is always half full no matter what! Pam shares insight into some of the guidance she gives to her adolescent clients on their circle of trust.Charla talks about the importance of healing past hurts and knowing your values and standards in a relationship. She talks about the importance of relationships in our lives and how each relationship we have, whether pleasant or painful, is a learning experience. "You win or you learn, like you either win a friend or you learn a lesson." – Charla Turner - Author of Trustworthy

The title of this podcast really encompasses the core of our conversation. Relationships are so important and TRUST is the cornerstone of all relationships. "You can't do this journey by yourself. That was never the purpose to walk this life by yourself or with just a handful of people. It was to encounter people that bring something in a season of our life." – Ashley Bedosky

We all get hurt at some time or another and feel betrayed. At times when we are really hurting, focusing on serving others can sometimes take our focus off of our own pain. "When you're hurting and when things are not going great in your life, if you'll serve someone, if you'll put your attention and your focus on helping others, it's amazing that your pain becomes smaller and smaller." – Charla Turner - Author of TrustworthyThis episode was so enlightening and we enjoyed it so much. Welcome to the Middle Age(ish) Podcast, hosted by Ashley Bedosky, Lisa Kelly, Dr. Pam Wright, and Trisha Kennedy Roman. In this episode, we speak with Jennifer Norman of The Human Beauty Movement.

Self-love isn't something that comes easily for everyone but is an important part of happiness from within. As we gain age and experience, we begin to realize that there is so much more to beauty than what is "skin deep."

"I work in the beauty industry and in facial aesthetics. Of course, we need to look at outward measurable beauty when we're looking at balance, proportions, and ratios, but I know that beauty is so much more, beauty comes from within. It's not just skin deep, and that's why I just absolutely love this Human Beauty Movement." – Trisha Kennedy Roman

Jennifer Norman gives us a candid view of her story from her early beginnings as a Korean-American adoptee, to her rise in the beauty industry, her relationship challenges as a young adult and into mid-life, the significant medical challenges she has faced with her precious son, and her decision to find beauty within herself, within each day, and the beauty of life.

"Beauty really is so much more felt with the heart than it is seen with the eyes." – Jennifer Norman - founder of The Human Beauty Movement

Jennifer explains how she has changed her mindset and ultimately changed her career path to start a company focused on connecting with one's inner self and those around you. The Human Beauty Movement advocates compassionate self-love, self-care, acceptance, and expression, bringing out the inner beauty in all humans.

Welcome to the Middle Age(ish) Podcast, hosted by Dr. Pam Wright, Lisa Kelly, Ashley Bedosky, and Trisha Kennedy Roman. In this debut episode, you’ll get to know each of us, what this podcast is all about, and what you can look forward to in future episodes.

“Middle age” is not clearly defined, so we share our perspectives of what’s considered middle age and how that changes as we get older. We talk about the various changes and challenges women encounter in middle age and the importance of self-reflection as we start this new chapter of life. We also share our thoughts on being mothers and raising children in the Digital Age (and why we’re SO glad we didn’t grow up with social media!).

“I expected this part of my life to be easier than it was when you have babies or when you’re just starting out and you’re so unsure of yourself, but I do feel with the age that I’ve gotten to, especially in my 40s, I’ve learned a lot more about myself in the last five years than in the 40+ years and I think that’s been a great thing.” – Lisa Kelly

As a group of empowered female professionals, business owners, wives, and mothers, we’re here to shine light on the beauty and power of being Middle Age(ish). We’ve loved every bit of being this age and through this podcast, we hope we can make your journey that much better.
