Welcome to the Tools for the Modern Man Podcast! This is the place where modern men learn the tools that they’ll need to overcome modern life’s unique obstacles. If you’re challenged with balancing your work, life, parenting, relationships, growth, and all sorts of issues unique to the modern man you are in the right place.
I spent my formative years working in restaurants and I believe that a lot of who I am today was formed during that time. If you are someone who has worked in the "industry" this episode will resonate with you. And if you are not, listen anyways because you could learn a few things that may clear up.
Each stage of my development from dish pig to manger taught me valuable lessons that I use every single day. This episode dives into those lessons.
These include:
I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I did going down memory lane.

This week on the podcast I ask the question "Are you ready to be a manager?"
This is something that I've observed over my career where people grasp to move up through an organization only to be completely unprepared with the challenges and skills needed to lead people.
I share some of my own personal experiences and challenges when faced with leading and managing.

The stoic writer Ryan Holiday wrote the book "Ego is the Enemy", which is the perfect way to sum up the role that Ego plays in leadership.
Ego does nothing to cultivate leadership qualities and in fact holds you back from achieving true success. Today I talk about things to be mindful of when addressing pride vs arrogance, and how your ego is behind it all.
It was written that "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."
Well that "haughty spirit" is your ego, and the sooner you face it and check it, the sooner you will accomplish that for which you are working towards.

The first step in any job hunt is updating your resume, but most people's resumes SUCK! I know because mine used to suck as well, and so many that I've read over my long career have as well.
This makes perfect sense, we aren't trained to write resumes, or promote ourselves in many cases. That is why I brought in a resume writing expert... Amanda Traugutt from Elevated Resumes.
Amanda and her business partner Allison have been doing this work for over 10 years and she has a very unique way of approaching resumes that aligns 100% with what I have seen works in the real world.
We go over all the things you need to improve your resume and make the biggest impact.
It's a great conversation that you don't want to miss out on.
Thanks again Amanda for joining me on Tools for the Modern Man.

Today I'm kicking off my series of episodes dedicated to you the W2/T4 career professional. There comes a time in every man's career when you want to make a change. Sometimes those are small pivots, sometimes they are drastic, and sometimes you don't get to choose at all.
Over the last 6 months I've been diving deep into this and been having a lot of conversations with people looking to pivot and experts who focus specifically on that.
This week however I want us to slide into thinking more about what it is we want, how are we going to get there, and then implement the skills.
Over the next few weeks I'm going to be interviewing amazing guests on the topics of Resumes, Linkedin Profiles, Networking, Interviews, and more.
So dust off some of those old skills, review your CORE VALUES & strengths assessment, and join us on this journey.
This is going to be fun

"The standard is the standard" - Mike Tomlin
Coach Tomlin's phrase is one that I love, the standard IS the standard. But seriously, what does that mean and why is it important?
I'm a big believer is having personal and professional standards. These standards guide your path and ultimately determine your success. People see how you operate, and will choose to follow or leave based on what they see.
The biggest trick however is setting YOUR standard, are you going to set it high? Medium? Low?
As I dive further into leadership topics and traits I want to start with a review of why standards matter and help you to identify your own.
New leadership styles need to create a new environment where people are striving towards something bigger than themselves, a standard higher than they've used before.
Maybe that's why a flag is also known as a "Standard"?

My guest today is a one of my coauthor's from Volume 10 of Cracking the Rich Code, a public speaker, a public servant with over 45 years of experience in public affairs and troubleshooting communications for the government.

We have a very entertaining conversation that covers resilience, lessons learned from baseball, what it takes to change careers so many times, and the all important skill of "forgetory".

Over a ten-year career, Lou also played for the New York Yankees organization, alongside greats like Mickey Mantle, and coached in the Cincinnati Reds organization.
Lou went back to school at 28 and received his B.S. degree from Troy State University (AL). Lou moved into the training and development field with Pat Ryan and Associates of Chicago, Ill. in l974. As December is in full swing and we are all feeling the pressure of expectations, let's not forget to reset often, daily even, to be grateful.
This is something that can't be practiced enough, gratitude doesn't come naturally to most of us, and I see it everywhere. It starts with children, parents, and ultimately ourselves.
My friend quoted this;
"What if tomorrow you only had the things you were grateful for today?"
Would this change your mind about gratitude, if you didn't take 5 minutes every day to appreciate your health, your spouse, your job, your children, your house - those things would be taken from you tomorrow. How would you cherish the moment if that were the case?
I know that we all put an enormous amount of pressure on ourselves to deliver on all the wishes, but you are doing enough just by appreciating what you have, because who knows what tomorrow might bring.
Stay safe and grateful this holiday season.

Welcome to today's podcast, this episode is a bit unique because it's a recording of one of my Strategy Sessions.
What are strategy sessions? These are my specialty, I take someone's problem and we break down what's getting in their way.
It's a pretty powerful session, some of the topics we cover:
"Don't follow your passion, bring passion to what you are doing"
If you have never had a strategy session this is a great example of what value you can get from spending time being guided and having someone asking the right questions.
The best part of strategy sessions is that you get CLARITY around what you want to work on and it gets you FOCUSED on what you need to do. The best part are the results, from this session alone Devin scored a sponsor for his Yerba Power Podcast.
If you are feeling unstuck or just want to learn more about getting your own strategy session use the link below to book a time to chat with me.

This is a question that all the women in our life are always asking, but to tell the truth most of us don't actually know what drives us.
What are our basic needs?
It's not keeping us fed, it's not lot's of $ex, although those things are fantastic.
In this episode I discuss the three psychological needs of men:
It is critically important to recognize and fulfil these needs to live a happy and satisfied life.
A lack of confidence can lead to self-destructive behavior and how being part of a group can help build confidence. Lastly, the need for freedom and autonomy in men's lives and how a lack of it can lead to feeling trapped and resentful.
So what can you do to satisfy your needs?

"Retired - Enjoying life"
Why are so many of us waiting for retirement before we can allow ourselves to enjoy life? I think it's because we don't spend enough time on ourselves during the "working" years.
We love to take on more and more responsibility, commit to too many things, and carry the entire burden on our shoulders.
The term "filling your cup" is used a lot in self help and personal development and you may even use the term yourself but have you actually thought about it at length.
After a fascinating conversation I had in my men's group this topic was bounced around at length and I wanted to share my thoughts with all of you about what it means to truly fill your cup and why it's important.
So go out today and create a little joy in your life.

After getting back from a 2 week vacation I was looking for some motivation to get back to my daily routine. The problem is that the only motivation that exists is my bodies base programming.
This base programming is known as the motivational triad and it governs everything our brain wants us to do:
This three things are the only thing we as humans are "motivated" to do.
We aren't motivated to work out, eat healthy, or work harder. So STOP 🛑 looking for motivation!
Instead I share how I deal with a lack of motivation to do the things that are good for me in this week's episode.

I love this book! It does such a great job of highlighting what playing the infinite game is and why we should want to organize our businesses this way. But what I love best is how applicable it is to the parts in our lives that are not business focused.
How can you play the infinite game in your marriage? Parenting?
So, in the podcast I attempt to do just to this great book that I recommend everyone read.

I have been obsessed with this concept lately and I think it is greatly overlooked in our own personal growth and development cycle. If you look closely enough every major stage of you life follows the elements of the hero's journey.

There is no quick fix solution to growth and goals, but the journey is what we have to experience in order to go from a whiny farm boy to a Jedi Knight.

"Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way" - Victor Frankl
I'm recording this podcast on The 4th of July, American Independence day and I have my own thoughts on what freedom means to me.
Freedom is not a free-for-all where you get to do whatever you want, whenever you want. That thinking is for children.
Freedom is choice.
The freedom to choose your actions/reactions to circumstances around you. Don't confuse "rights" with "freedom". Rights can be taken from you, just as easily as they were given.
Freedom is always yours.
So go an celebrate independence today and make choices that allow you to be free!

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you feel like you're constantly judging and criticizing yourself? You're not alone. We all have an inner critic, that little voice in our head that tells us we're not good enough, smart enough, or talented enough. But what happens when that inner critic becomes our worst enemy?
The truth is, we are often our own worst critics. We hold ourselves to impossibly high standards, compare ourselves to others, and beat ourselves up when we fall short. This constant self-criticism can take a toll on our mental health, self-esteem, and overall well-being.
So, how do we overcome self-criticism and become our own best cheerleader?
That's what I dive into this week on the podcast.

From the uncertainty of acclimatizing to Everest's altitude and climate, to making a fateful choice that led to a once in a lifetime opportunity, and the afterglow following the descent.

Wow, what a story!
Thanks again to Mike for graciously telling it.
At a height of 29,029ft Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain on the planet. To many it is seen at the pinnacle of individual achievement. Man's quest to overcome the great of challenges.
The weather is harsh and unpredictable, high winds, freezing temperatures, and sudden storms are the norm here. Steep ice walls, exposed ridges and treacherous crevasses also add to the challenge of conquering this mountain.
In order to be successful you have to master every part of yourself mentally and physically, not to mention have a bit of luck on your side.
As of July 2022, there have been approximately 11,346 summit ascents by 6,098 people.
Today on the Tools for thee Modern Man Podcast I am fortunate enough to have one of those rare individuals on the show.
My friend Mike Mulrooney.
I've known Mike for over 20 years and I when we first met back in 2001 there is no way I would predict that this man would achieve something most people never dare to even dream about.
I hope you enjoy listening to Mike's story from sitting on his couch watching a show that sparked an idea which led him on a 6 year journey to summit the earth's highest peak.
