In this episode, I have the honor of interviewing author Cheryl Wanner as part of our Author Interview Series.

Cheryl Wanner is the debut author of a YA Contemporary Romance novel SEE ME AS I AM, which released on May 16th, 2023 by Immortal Works Press.

Cheryl Wanner is a YA author who loves crafting words into images, creating characters that won't let you go, and telling stories that deliver impact as well as entertain. She's also an amateur photographer, a synth keyboardist, an outdoor enthusiast, and a former host mom of exchange students from all over Europe and Asia. She and her husband have two grown children of their own.

In this interview, Cheryl shares her publishing experience and what led her to this point, such as:

  • The dream that inspired a 20-year pursuit to get published.
  • How winning the RevPit contest changed her writing process.
  • The commitment to this story, no matter what.
  • The pivot toward signing a deal with a smaller traditional publishing house and why it was the best move for her.
  • And what her debut YA novel, See Me As I Am, is all about and where to buy it.

There are nuggets of wisdom everywhere, you just need to be open to them.

Today's storytelling tip is all about commercials. Every commercial tries to convince a person to buy the product quickly, but the best commercials are the ones that evoke emotion, tell you a story, and convince the person their product will transform them in some way. Next time you watch TV or listen to the radio, pay attention to the transformations promised to the viewer.

Now, how can you apply that to your stories?

How do you promise to transform your readers?

Update: The Book Edit Collab is open for applications! Applications close 12/19/22 for the winter/spring cohort. For more info, email me at Katie@Katiemccoach.com or send me a note on Twitter/FB/IG.

This episode is for the person who has a story within them but is too intimidated to write it. I can't tell you how often people reveal to me that they've always wanted to write a book. The thing is, most of them never will. Is it fear? Intimidation? Do they think they need to be good at writing before they begin? There are so many reasons we don't try something new.

So this podcast is for the person who wants to write but hesitates taking that first step.

CW: Some curse words are used in this episode.

Every writer has at least once heard the age-old advice to "write every day." It's one of those Rules of writing with a capital R. But how practical is this advice?

Does it account for life? Mental health? Disabilities? Or even the fact that all humans have different needs and creative preferences?

In this episode, book coach Katie McCoach explores both sides of this advice. Why it is great advice, as well as why it's the worst advice.

Where do you stand?

We all know comparison is bad, and yet, writers are notorious for comparing themselves to other writers and published, successful authors. In this episode, Katie lays on the truth: comparison is based in lies. You will literally never be in sync with someone else's writing experience, so comparing yourself is a losing game. There is no possible way two experiences will ever be the same.

And yet, comparison can teach you things. You'll learn how to diagnose what's really the root of your jealousy, anger, and frustration when you compare yourself to someone else, AND you'll discover how to use comparison as inspiration instead.
