Justin Starbird

This is The Inspectations Podcast, hosted by Justin Starbird, CEO of The Aebli Group. In business, one of the most difficult tasks a leader must do is find a way to “Inspect what they expect.” Too often great businesses fail, or managers lose their way because they were operating based on expectations that they had not yet inspected. Most often, there is a communication breakdown between what the desired outcome is and the path to follow to get there.

The Inspectations Podcast brings together business leaders from all industries to talk about best practices, innovation, leadership, and business development. The concept was born from an internal conversation with the TAG Team resulting in the realization that process & systems could be improved.

Join host Will Cobb as he sits down with Justin Starbird, CEO of The Aebli Group, to dive into a concept Justin refers to as "The Second New Year." Coined to mark the post-Labor Day period, this time of year serves as a critical moment for businesses to reassess their goals, realign strategies, and sprint toward year-end objectives.Justin shares how businesses—particularly mid-sized and larger companies—often face a realization after summer vacations that they have only a few months left to meet fiscal targets. With holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas on the horizon, the window for hitting those goals shrinks rapidly. During this period, companies must review the progress they've made so far and adjust tactics to finish the year strong.Key topics discussed include:📍The Second New Year: How Labor Day symbolizes a reset point for businesses to evaluate their annual goals and prepare for the final stretch of the year.📍Goal Evaluation: Whether companies are on track or need to pivot, this is the time to either capitalize on momentum or troubleshoot underperformance.📍Last-Minute Projects: Many businesses reach out to TAG for one-off projects like website revamps, lead magnets, and marketing campaigns to use remaining budgets before year-end.📍Budgets and Procurement: Justin explains how many companies adopt a "use it or lose it" mindset with leftover budgets, leading to opportunities for agencies to offer additional services like video production or content audits.📍Small Business vs. Larger Business Approaches: While small businesses may use this period for strategic reflection, larger businesses often undergo operational evaluations and prepare budgets for the next fiscal year.📍Maximizing Marketing Efforts: TAG's approach to working collaboratively with businesses to amplify what's already working rather than overhauling strategies that are successful. This episode is packed with valuable insights for business leaders looking to navigate the challenges of year-end planning while positioning their companies for long-term success!

On the most recent episode of The Inspectations Podcast, CEO of The Aebli Group, Justin Starbird, sat down with Lucas Stacey from HubSpot, one of the leading marketing, sales, and service hub platforms, to discuss CRM.

The term CRM stands for customer relationship management and somehow along the way, people started to think of it as only a sales tool. The truth is, it your CRM should be at the core of all your business development efforts.

Not only can a good CRM help to build your relationships with prospects and clients, it also offers you tools to recognize and address opportunities for growth.

Alongside interested and engaged clients HubSpot also tracks interactions with folks that never became customers. How is that beneficial? Lucas explains, “Now we have this really powerful toolset that we can use to inform your business decisions and identify what's working really well and what you thought was going to work, but it turned out to not be that great. This can allow you to stop spending time and money on the things that are not working and instead go invest more in the things that are. It's just so wonderful when a business can sit back and empirically look at some of these things and inform their choices rather than just make an educated guess."

In the most recent episode of Inspectations, CEO of The Aebli Group, Justin Starbird, sat down with Kurt Walker, Product Manager of Anthony Liftgates, to talk about how they told the story of the amazing innovation happening in their company, specifically with deadlines looming before an important tradeshow.

Anthony Liftgates dates back to 1917, when they began making truck equipment for the fledgling highway transportation industry. In the 1930s and '40s, Kurt’s grandfather was the right-hand man to the owner and was involved in the commercialization of the first liftgate in the '40s. After World War II, he left Anthony Liftgates and started his own company, Streeter Dependable Manufacturing. Everything came full circle in the early '80s when he had the opportunity to buy the liftgate business from Anthony.

"The TAG Team was really creative. in a 6-week stretch they were able to have a website, photo shoot, and new website come together at the last minute. Those kinds of shots are neat, because they're bold, and people say, "What/ What are they doing with that concept there?" It catches people's attention. The creativity was there even though there was a tight window."

After their success at tradeshows last year, this year looks to be a big one for the company as they come out with more new products than any other year Kurt has been there. “That's what makes my job exciting, to be able to see these projects that have been going on for several years behind the scenes actually coming to market.”

To learn more about the amazing things happening at Anthony Liftgates and how they pulled together a successful marketing exhibit in a crunch, listen to "Telling a Story With Deadlines Looming" on the TAG Inspectations podcast.

Mark Sponseller, CEO & Co-Founder of The Morningside Group, joins Justin Starbird on the latest episode of The Inspectations Podcast to discuss how he and his new consulting firm help create solutions to solve business challenges.

The Morningside Group is a financial and operationally focused business consulting group. The group works with corporate entities, private equity banks, mergers and acquisitions, recapitalizations, performance improvement, crisis, and change management. Although their spectrum is broad, they are just trying to help solve problems and turn things around at the end of the day. When Mark Sponseller, CEO & Co-Founder, says financial and operational, that equates to what he and his team have been working on for their whole careers over the last 25 years.

"The TAG Team has been great. We worked together on a company growing at an accelerated pace that had never landed a national account of note.

Previously, there was a preconceived notion of what the customer wanted, but you (TAG) helped us better understand the voice of the customer, "what do they want," and then translate that into "how do we fit there."

Mark shared how "The process felt very natural. It's not just the things you (TAG) did to help translate our message, but it's also the structure you brought to the table. That gave us the confidence that we could win (more big customers)."

Listen as Mark and Justin talk about how The Morningside Group tackles challenges and moves their clients' goals forward.

In a recent episode of Inspectations, CEO of The Aebli Group, Justin Starbird, sat down with Russ Fordyce, Director of Content Marketing for Infinera, to talk about the challenges they face each day in marketing cutting-edge, yet complex technology solutions.

Infinera is developing the latest technologies for the optical networking industry. Russ explains, "Basically, if you think about your internet connections, somewhere outside your house is a fiber optic cable, and at the end of each fiber optic is a laser. Infinera makes the hardware and software to build these optical networks."

Companies like Netflix and Facebook that are going through tremendous booms in bandwidth are looking for ways to improve their customer experience and lower their costs. Infinera products give more capacity on those lines. When you need more capacity, you have to upgrade your equipment.

For many companies, that means moving away from this centralized data center architecture. Previously, those companies had a big data center or a few big data centers, and now they're moving into more local data centers or more local content storage areas so that that experience is better for the end customer.

If you think about it, content providers believe that bandwidth is moving from that core network, that center, going into the data center, and now it's being distributed worldwide. The bandwidth needs are still there. They're just moving, as many service providers move their assets.

"Explainer videos are important for simplifying the challenges we solve," Russ explains. "We're developing brand new technologies, so we need an effective way to build awareness and explain how something works in layman's terms. These videos have helped us tell those stories."

"Using the TAG team to help with these videos is beneficial," Russ says, "because we're giving them a script and some ideas on a storyboard, and they come at it with a fresh perspective and bring that narrative to life. They're not experts in optical networking, so they're helping us make it more useful by taking ownership of that video and making it their own."

Listen as Russ and Justin talk through how they put projects together and how that helps Infinera tell their story.

In a recent episode of Inspectations, CEO of The Aebli Group, Justin Starbird, sat down with Ken Gray, Vice President of Business Development for current TAG client RISE™Robotics, to discuss the importance and benefits of a strong content strategy.

RISE™Robotics is a company founded at MIT 11 years ago by three MIT graduates and a Rhode Island School of Design graduate. The founders initially thought about human performance amplification exoskeletons as a fun way to create a company. Initially, the idea was to leap to the top of a tall building in a single bound or an iron-man suit. As it progressed, the business pivoted to more of an industrial application of one of the solutions for a problem they had with exoskeletons. They couldn't figure out how to generate enough speed force displacement without using hydraulics.

They wanted to find a fluid-free, lightweight way of delivering that much power. The RISE™Cylinder is an alternative to hydraulic cylinders in industrial applications like material handling, mining, and construction.

Now the world needs to hear about it!

Ken shared, "Let's start adding content purposefully. Let's create. Let's get into the RISE™Inside Podcast and talk to founders, investors, and early customers, early adopters about who RISE™ is, where we came from, what we do, and why it matters." Then RISE™ added blog content and then video snippets. Then THEY started using social media outlets, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Working with The Aebli Group, there has been a very comprehensive strategy around that explanation of who RISE™ is, what they do, why it's essential, and what RISE™ wants to do to generate interest and have people would reach out and contact RISE™.

A great content strategy is an all-encompassing approach to creating content that drives your key business objectives. And while there's no one-size-fits-all solution, identifying and including the three key elements—brand focus, user experience, and content distribution—will help develop a plan for success.

Listen as Ken and Justin talk through how the plan came to be, the results it has yielded, and what is next!

Erin Cobb, Project Manager for The Aebli Group, joins Justin Starbird to talk about how The Aebli Group became a Maine Based company.

Before the podcast, most folks did not know Justin and Erin have been friends for over 25 years. So who better to ask such personal questions? Erin shared her insights from the younger version of Justin and how everyone always knew that he was going to do something on his own - maybe even be the President!

Being in Maine also has a way of keeping people grounded. Justin said that "you get that opportunity to recharge your batteries almost every day or at least as often as you really want to put in the effort to. What that does is that it allows, I don't know, for me at least, it keeps creativity flowing all the time... just taking the girls to school every day, there's long passages of just trees and you get a beautiful scenery of a river, or bridges, or whatever.

That part is just so cool because you don't see it often, you don't see it in every part of the country. You have moments to reflect even if you're busy thinking about something, often, I'll get a moment of clarity and be like, "This is what I need to do to solve that problem for the client."

My daughter asked me recently, "Dad, what do you do all day?"

With that one simple question, I started a podcast. I had always assumed my daughters and family knew what I did as the owner of a marketing agency. Well, the truth is, they did not.

As a result, I put them on the spot and said, "why don't you ask me these questions on a podcast and we can help everyone figure out what I do all day."

This is the first episode of The Inspectations Podcast, powered by The Aebli Group (TAG). My name is Justin Starbird and I am the CEO of TAG and father to Alicia (Ah-lee-syah) Starbird, my first guest on the show.

Ali jumps right in and lets me know that she sees me talking all day, but not working. She also shares her perspective of my work-life balance and how that affects the family.
