I begin today's very special episode, a salute to 14 with some of my thoughts and stories of my time with the former head baseball coach at the U. of Minnesota for 42 years. Coach Anderson spent 50 years on the campus of the Minnesota. In his time there he was student Athlete, student Manager, Student Coach, Assistant Coach and finally the Head coach at the of 26. As the winning Coach in Gopher baseball and B1G baseball history. 14 cared more the people coached and tutored, than win and loses. The very honest was very loyal to those he came into contact with. You always knew were you stood with 14.
After returning from a commercial break, I was able catch up with Scott Mayatas former all B1G closer for the 2010 Gopher's regular season and tournament team. Scott was able to file in on how life is going after college baseball. We moved on to his thoughts of his as a player under 14 and how it has shaped him til this day. Scott was able to drive home the fact, that were not just a student under 14. Scott talked about how he developed, socially, academically and lastly as a ball player. We talked about road trips, games and team meals. Scott credits Coach Anderson , for his development as husband and a father.
I catch up with Brehz who lucky enough to work as a student manager for 2 legendary Gopher coaches. First, Clem "the Gem" Haskins and then finishing up his college with Gopher Baseball under John Anderson. We chatted like two old former equipment managers would. We discussed what we learned, the trips, the players and how mentors like 14 and others readied us for the next 50 years of our lives. To work hard, to lead, be a good parent and give back.

I state off today's Pod with commentary on the language of Sports Media. They want us angry and hooked. Also, they way they describe athletes and mostly black athletes in inhumane terms. Whales, Weapons and Beast to name a few. The average then parrots what they hear and forget to look at the athletes as humans. Which makes it easy to mis-treat in print, online or a broadcast.
The CSC(College Sports Commission) has released info on the 1st year of True NIL Tracking and the numbers are astronomical. The amount of dollars are mind blowing and only growing. Due to the lack of control by the People who were put in place to control the spending.
LSU is making a major announcement this week and rumor is they will be the 1st in a big way to do something that schools and conferences have been careful about not doing. If they succeed in their efforts, this may cause other entities to join them in chase of the almighty dollar. Why are they willing to do so and what has lead them to this point.
The BIG XII held it's Media day for the 2026-27 school year. As you may guess, the Brendon Sworsby was the point of interest. Find out what was said and not said, during their media days. The BIG XII did announce a conference wide sponsorship deal. This deal will change the look of college uniforms and playing surfaces. The BIG XII was also, notified of more fallout involving the gambling QB at a different member institution stay. The NFL's rush to PAY-dirt may cause problems for the colleges as they all fight for more money, more-money and more money. How on the back end this could hurt their labor pool.

The court injunction favorable ruling on behave of a college player has many layers. That everyone is in favor of rule until they can't have what they want. The player in question betted on games he was dressed for. He betted on games that he inside info of. He betted on NFL games that would get him suspended or banned, if he played in the NFL. He knew he doing something illegal and set a plan to hide and only when he got busted, did he claim as gambling addiction.
The school he transfered to file an injunction on behave, because they need him to play and didn't want to seem negative to future recruits.
Jeffery Kessler took his case and beat NCAA again, but is it him or it the real villain, the true corrupt people in college sports.
Clearly, the much needed ingredients of college sports are not important to these people who keep making ruling in favor of the school/athletes. The ruling smacks of corruption and the most of the one thing that we all must believe in for sports to magical. The inability of the leaders to say no to those who they need to is bursting budgets all the country in college sports.
Tampering enforcement is causing the conference leader to fight over more items. Should the NCAA enforcement of roster tampering is hot topic. One conference wants to pause enforcement and some want to continue forward and prosecute they offending schools and one conference is talking out both sides of their mouth. Today's Pod features 3 generations of Gopher Student Athletic workers. Brehz, Ben and Myself relive days of glory. LOL! We all had different roles in the dept at different times, but we all have great experience's. From the 1980's, 1990's and 2000's, we all learned about working in college athletics and pain of being involved in Gopher Athletics. The 3 of us chatted our roles and what time that we worked there. We discussed the our opinions of where college sports land has change, where it is now and where it is going in the future. We talked about the major turn around of Indiana Football and could it happen at other schools like Minnesota. What's the cost to have it happen if you've been a loser for so long. We laughed about Minnesota continue to not get it right and just be mediocre.
We moved our discussion to the CFP and what we think is right and wrong about the sports biggest tourney and prize. What can college do to get better at over coming the issue that administrators now face.
Lastly, we deal with Opt Outs, Coaches, A.D.'s and players are now opting out of season play. Why are losing team being ask to fill spots. The story behind the scene that is not being fully explained by college leaders. It's ugly and they don't have a way to get ahold of it.

Well the time has come to select the teams for the CFP and Fill the bracket. The Committee has shown once again that they screw up a one car funeral. The twist and turns to keep a dog and pony show alive on ESPN. One team that deserve to be in got left out and then went nuclear on the whole post season bit. One that got that didn't deserve to be in seems to be protected by it's past glory.
Tweaking selection format only served to make a mess of the process. A P4 conference made bad tie breaker rules and almost got shut for two G6 schools.

I started the podcast with an update on the story of College basketball who continue to run a foul of the gambling rules. I touch on the first of its kind lawsuit as the U. of Wisconsin has filed a litigation vs U. of Miami Florida over poaching Xavier Lucas a football player who had contract with the Badgers. "FINALLY" The Grant House case been ratified by Judge Claudia Wilkins and she can retires from the bench. I inform who the heck Grant House is and is not. After a June 6th News dump. College athletic administrators are in lock step on how to run college sports? Well, that's what the "House Case Settlement is supposed to bring. Everyone singing, dancing, slapping each other on the back, kissing babies and taking a lap with their victory cigars?
Before I get heavy into the fallout of the settlement, I discuss an oldie but, a goodie. The Connor Stallion case is back! The NCAA Committee on infractions meet with the parties involved in this one including Connor Stallion. Of course not Jim Harbaugh he is never planning on coaching in the college ranks again. Michigan has tried to self impose a penalty in this case, but the Committee wanted to (remember this Committee in the future) hear the evidence from those involved before giving a final ruling in August. Michigan threw out a penalty of H/C Sherrone Moore would sit out weeks 3 & 4 under Michigan's Plan. The enforcement committee( remember this Committee in the future also) on infractions will probably have more to say on the matter.
Back to the main story, Most of the fallout has been discussed on my show and others at nauseum. Playing athletes, back playing older athletes, how the will be divided amongst present and future athletes. Roster limits and people to run college sports. Such as Bryan Seeley, I give you more on his background in the pod. How they handle new/real NIL to athletes? How schools don't opt into 'REV Share will live and those who do and dot abide/sign by the new agreements amongst themselves are dealt with or decide to cheat will be dealt with.
The loud remaining questions clear, who's happy and not? What will happen to non-revenue teams in the future? Is there FINALLY peace on college campuses or these clowns/College Leaders I mean fooling themselves. The House continue to take up time and space in our hearts, minds and worlds. Judge Wilkens has bent over backwards to give proper guidance on roster limits to the member institutions(the schools) that make up the NCAA. She have given more than hints. Judge Wilkins has given a road map to the schools and their leadership on how to get her to approve the House case settlement. On the other hand the schools and their leadership have to decided to play a game of chicken with Judge Wilkins and basically stated, no thanks, we will continue to do things as we see fit when comes to roster limits. If they don't do what she wants, things could get very messy for the school and very costly. The next week or so could be interesting for the smaller schools who don't want to pay their athletes , but would "NOT" be able stay alive if they lose in court. Remember these are the school that always voted to keep the amateurism model, not the Power 4 schools. If Judge Wilkins re-opens the House case, it's going to be a blood bath. The Power 4 commissioners met late week to discuss the future the format of the College football playoffs. In 2026 a new contact for the playoffs will change and more money can be earned. The B1G and SEC will have control of playoffs.

Well, April 7th came and went with no ratification of the house case settlement. We were told 6+ months ago, that Judge Wilkins was going to put an end to this round of law suits and bring some clarity to college sports with her signing of on the House case settlement. We were all waiting with baited breath for the April 7th. She didn't deliver the guidance and peace we all sought. Matter of fact she added more fuel to the fire and pushed back on one the key components of the college leaderships for the future of college sports. I will tell you what push back was and the other details from the nothing burger , that was April 7th.

A whole lot of betting going on and this episode is here to explain what is going on. First of all FSU and Clemson betted against the ACC and ESPN and lost. Okay, okay let me explain. FSU and Clemson were suing the ACC and ESPN for the ability to break the Grant of rights. They believed that they could break the grant of rights and get to another Conference and get a bigger and better rev share cut. Here the thing, FSU and Clemson were burning money on legal fees. They were no closer to getting free from the ACC. Plus, they found how much the other Conferences didn't what them. They did gain some new advantages with staying with the ACC. Peace in our time?
Some Georgia state legislators are betting on that can pass legislation that with allow the college athletes in their state to be tax exempt. They believe this legislation will aid in better recruiting at the schools in their state. One the biggest issues the NCAA faces is interference from State law makers who only see things that set advantages for their schools. Those law makers only make it difficult for the NCAA to pass law that are equal for all schools.
Speaking of Law makers our congress is being wooed by lobbyist of the NCAA to create and pass anti-trust laws to protect them from being sued every time try to legislate the rules that are past by the member institutions. There is a strange twist, these same law makers are being wooed by leaders of NIL leaders for the athletes. The law makers are double dipping , but for who's benefit? Sounds like both side are betting on something will get done.
Lastly, The FBI is investigating point shaving and game influence in the NBA and College basketball. The colleges are fearing betting on many levels. The attacks on players social media and the lost of eligibility. Effecting the outcome of games is having a strange twist on college sports, or why it's happening at certain levels of College Basketball.

There is fallout from the 2024 College football season that NO one was counting on happening. The athletes find something more valuable than NIL dollars and it's "playing time". It's gum bumping/Talking season in College football/ College Sports. I start off talking about how the SEC spends so much time taking shots at other conferences and coaches. For a Conference that says over and over , that they are the top Conference in all college sports. I think they are unsecure and boastful. As July 1st 2024 rolled around and the teams formally of the Pac 12 officially joined their new conferences. I thought it was time to tell a bed time story about the Death or Demise of the Conference of Champions, the Pac 12. A story so sad , that it killed off one it's greatest hero's. Bill Walton who was a M.O.P. in the NCAA basketball tournament for UCLA. Had to endure a season long good bye to the PAC 12 or as he called it the "Conference of Champions". Days before his beloved Pac 12 was to go away as we know it, Bill died from cancer. This is a story/nightmare of incompetence, greed, arrogance, bad decisions, cover ups and just plain old stupidity. The Power brokers, The Commissioners, Presidents, chancellors and A.D.'s, let down their Coaches, Athletes, Student bodies, Alumni and Fans. With one bad decision after another. Once the TV companies saw and understood the mess they was dealing with found it was easier to manipulate and leave for dead than the Big XII or ACC; I believe were the true targets for death. 100 plus years for American Sports history just left to rot on the side of the road. A member of the U.S. House decided to introduce a bill to insure the athletes could not be made employees of a schools, Conferences or Associations. I truly do not have a grasp on why this brought fourth, but it is name The protection their Economic Freedom Act of 2024. I do have some thoughts on the topic. With the ever changing economic landscape of college athletics Schools, Conferences and Associations are all looking for more and new way to make money since Media sources of money have dried up. Schools are looking to not to subsidize the athletic dept anymore; even they pimp them out everyway they can. Also, the athletes themselves can't be pimped out anymore with giving a cut to them. With the proposed settlement of the House V. NCAA case last week , I thought it was good time to ask some questions about this historic change in college athletics with no other than former U. of Minnesota A.D. Joel Maturi. A framework has been started and edging towards an agreement to settle the House vs. NCAA case. They have to the end of May 2024. It will cost them 1 billion dollars to back the athlete from 2018 to 2022. This will not end the court cases, but it put an end to amateurism. With the seasons changing once again , it's time to put somethings to Bed. I start the show with salutes to the 2024 NCAA Women's and Men's College Basketball championships. The undefeated champs from the U. of South Carolina basketball team lead their head Coach Dawn Stanly. Showing there deep bench and it's Power. Speaking of power, the Men's Champ U. of Conn. They beat their foes by double digits in each game. Showing they could over power each in many different ways. A Double-Double standard is once again being exposed in College sports, but this time it's women college sports. Are they allowed to be physical, be expressive and hold nothing back. Or do we want our female athletes to dainty, finesse young ladies. Some fill that they should never want to be aggressive, tough, physical or power. Some believe that make the young female athlete look man-like. That they should be lady-like at times. Watching young female up-close as I did for 20+ years. Made see and understand there is no room for that on the field or court. I understood to be champion they had to work hard at their sport, not show weakness to either coaches, teammates or opponents. They even to this day the majority of female athlete were brought to their sport by their dad, older brother or other male in the family. At younger ages they against boys who drilled to tough and never give in. If that's the case then what do you expect those young to do if they are fighting for playing time on a majority boys team. They have to work 2x as hard and be as tough or tougher.
The other shoe in this double-double standard is the racial component that we throw into the picture. Good gal v bad gals. The wholesome white players and the dirty black. As we have seen in this and last years NCAA women basketball tourney. Players of both races act the same way on the court, but only to have them described differently by the media and social media. We thought we finally got rid of this crap only to rear it's ugly head in women sports.
In a lot of way the only thing the NCAA has gotten right, is the elevation of women sports. Partly it came kicking and screaming to the party, but they have really taken care of women sports in the past 20 years. Now if only the people outside the sport would the same. Women's basketball has come a long way from tip-toe ball throwing.(people in MN will understand that on.)

With the world of college sports spinning ever so faster. I asked a simple question.
Should there be a draft in college sports? I would love hear from all you on that one.
The main topic for this week is surrounding the talk that All Could Collapse. What am I talking about. The ACC of course. With members suing the conference and blaming ESPN of being a bad partner. The schools of the ACC found out a couple of things in the past few weeks. One, they will be 30-60 million dollars per behind the schools of the B1G and SEC. This is the main reason why Clemson joined the party in suing the ACC. Clemson wants out and they want to join either the B1G or SEC. The other fact the school of the ACC learned. ESPN could opt of its TV deal with the conference. Leaving the ACC twist in the wind and try to find better revenues and a better TV deal. ESPN has many reason to do so. What recourse does the ACC schools have? Sue to get and that line is getting longer or they could vote to dissolve the conference. Why would they that? At least they could call their shot and start a new or just split up on their on terms. They have until July 2025 to do so. This going to be a B1G story in the weeks to come in College sports.

Why did Trev Alberts leave the school he played for and take a job at Texas A&M?
The format for the 2026 CFP was agreed to and was approved. The SEC and B1G tried flex with its new found power. The wanted to get 4 automatic bids in the CFP. The G5, Big XII and the ACC called the bluff of the B1G and Sec, who stated if that if the They didn't get there way, they would leave the CFP and take their conference teams and start their own Playoff's with the backing of ESPN and Fox. They would have killed off the CFP 2026 new extended format. When the other conferences said no to that many auto bids . The B1G and SEC gave in and agreed to 1 bid per conference, but they got what they really wanted. The B1G and SEC will get 53% of the CFP MONEY. Why is this important? The Season of 2023 was a mess of issues, great games and the need for direction from the adults in the room. Can they guide young people on the field and off the field. Can they do right by them and financially share the gains with the people who actually make the money. Can the adults lead and be proactive, not be reactive or overacted. The leadership of the Pac XII has brought it to the Pac 6. We all knew USC/UCLA were leaving for the B1G. Little did we know what that would lead to. Then they lost Colorado. and the Pac XII plan and hoped that they could land SDSU to fill that spot that Colorado left vacant. Then Pac XII took to much time and SDSU had to go crawling back to the Mountain West Conf. Pac XII was still in such of the Golden Ticket. A media deal that would bring them back to solid ground and allow them to be the hunter. Well, they finally saw the real media deal offer. Streaming only, with the possibility of some simal-cast game on ESPN. The Schools of the PAC XII would have to sell subscriptions to Apple to raise the many to fund their TV deal. What are they kids hocking candy bars and car washes to pay for their sports. Well, Today 8/4/23, The U. Oregon and U. Washington decided to take a half share from the B1G to join and U. of Arizona left for the Big XII.
Leaving Stanford, Cal, OSU, WAZZU, ASU and Utah to fend for themselves.

Was Pride, arrogance or ignorance that caused Colorado Buffalos to return to the BIG XII or Pride, arrogance or ignorance that has the conference on life support. The lack of a media deal is on the cover of the issue with the PAC XII. The leadership failed on so many levels. Prior Pac XII commissioner Larry Scott thought he was a wheeler dealer. He thought the Money would just keep rolling in and he was wasting it. He moved the head quarters to Silicone Valley were the cost was high and the office was never finished. The conference was over paid by their media partner and they never reported. Now each school is on the hook for millions of dollars in pay backs. Larry Scott turned down a new media deal with ESPN and Fox, believing the Conference was worth more and would get a better deal.
The Presidents, Chancellors and regent members of each schools looked down their noses at other Schools such as Iowa St., Texas Tech, K-State and Kansas, when there discussions of the two conferences. Thinking their high academic standards would be harmed if they got dirty with the lower BIG XII. Then Pac XII hired it's new commissioner George Kliavkoff , who in his first statement made the comment that now haunts him. We are open for business, telling the BIG XII, if you want to be on stable ground come to the pac. This was after the BIG XII lost Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC. Little did Kliavkoff know that 2 of his prized team were about to stable him in the back. USC/UCLA became members of the B1G and weakening their stability. This set off a war between the BIG XII and the PAC XII to try to lurer away member from the other. The Media Deal that was turned down by the Pac XII was taken by the BIG XII; which left the Pac XII with no media deal and no interested suiters. The BIG XII add Cent. FL, Cincinnati, Houston and BYU to strengthen their conference and has stolen a member of the PAC XII, COLORADO. THe Pac XII is on life support, other school are looking to leaving soon and media deal as no major players want a pacific coast only media market conference. Pride can kill you , but ignorance and arrogance can also be deadly.

As we get closer to another fall sport college season, the self inflected wounds of the NCAA Continue to be unearth by the rolling stone of college sports.
First off is Colorado U and it's on going saga on are staying in the Pac XII or , Are they going back home to the BIG XII? I believe we will have an answer very soon, they find the nuts and bolts of the latest offer for a media deal to Pac XII. I give some background on the history and what is driving the decision.
Next, More on Northwestern and their investigations into their harassment probe. It's gotten bigger than Football. Also, Baseball and Softball. What a mess to the point the football players who were set to represent the school at B1G Media days , notified the school they will not attend the festivities. I don't blame them for saying no. why should go there answer question on what is going when the school leadership will not do so.
Something to keep your ears and eyes open for, the Director of Football operation at Notre Dame resign immediately due to personal reason's. No other info was giving, you know someone is digging into the story.
Also, NIL goes to Washington D. C. 2 bills have been drafted to help the schools get a handle on NIL. You have to listen to explain the school are in this mess. It is an old fashion 3 ring circus that they created and needs Congress to bail their butts out.
Lastly, Jim Harbaugh the man who can't seem to remember details and what he covered up and made worst. How he tried to escape the scene of the crime. Only, to get pay raises and maybe a 4 week vacation.

I give an update on the outcome on the firing of Pat Fitzgerald at NMU. I think it was a hit job by the school paper and the lone student athlete who was out to get coach FItz.
From there I talked about the sanctions given U. of Tennessee Football. How blatant cheaters they were under Coach Jeremy Pruitt. The NCAA committee on infraction got it right. Don't punish the innocent, hit those in charge and the perpetrators.
Lastly, the dumb Baseball coach and associate at the U. of Alabama. Caught gambling because trust the associate to lay down a bet with inside info and how the other guy screwed it up big time.

Players were hazing other players for messing up in practice. Humping each other, vile language, keeping a tote board in the locker room.
Minority player were made to feel that couldn't be themselves. Couldn't wear their hair the way they wanted or wear cultural items or express themselves in the ways of the culture they were raised in. The were made to feel like outsiders if they didn't conform.
As I stated in the podcast two things should be made very clear.
- we don't know the coaches. All we know is what they and school want us to see. A lot people think just because they are a head coach that they are very smart or very cool. We don't know that, I worked with a ton of them and I don't know that. I only knew what they wanted me to know.
2.Coaches and staff's greatest fear is nor NIL or Transfer Portal. It's what is my group of 17-24 yr old people are doing when I (the Coach) do not have control of the time and life. We would joke about, the fact of the fastest way to get fire was for the athlete to do something illegal or immoral. Embarrass the school, break the law or haze others.
There is evidence that the coaches and staff of NWU should have known and acted on what they knew. You as the adult cannot turn a blind eye or cover up the issue. We are mandatory reporters. We sign something every year, that states if we see something say something, but fear also would control us. You don't want to be tagged as the problem or a snitch.

His name is Travis brown and he was my current event/history teacher and Basketball Coach. Here is the the inside tidbit on the story. I never played high school basketball. Find out my role as you listen to the episode. Born in the same neighborhood that I grew up in, Coach Brown look back at the not so mean street of St. Lous and how they shaped and influenced us. Having some of the same mentors many years apart only show similar our lives were. Coach Brown journey took him from being a state champion to a college star, only to return where it all it began. Like welcome back Carter or the White Shadow or in his case the Black Shadow. We discuss his very early success as a coach only to followed up the next season with his worst year as a coach. Coach gives us insights into what he learned from those two year. Coach Brown continued to climb the ladder and became an administrator. With the advent of the new George Forman movie, it got me to thinking about how all re-create ourselves over the years. Then it made me want to reach out to my old college roomie Alan "Link" Johnson , a man who over the years has done just that. From his early start in MPLS as an youth. The tales he told about his Dad and the things that he invented as child in Duluth , MN. Which explained why we had free cable as roommates. LOL. We chatted about how is Percussion lessons are successful in addressing cognitive, emotional, and physical goals. Plus, through a perceptual motor match: VISUAL, TACTILE, and AUDITORY combined with speech (good for not yet verbal students too), the student sees the lessons, feels it, and hears it as they say the answers out loud. It is this redundancy of information that provides positive results.

In a very deep and touching conversation with Dr. Don St. John we looked at so many effect PTSD from our childhood and the way we were raised. To be honest was very open about the wounds and trauma he suffered as a young person. from the physical abuse of his mother to the emotional abuse at the hand of his father. The trauma also was perpetrated by teachers and by members of his church. The effects on Don were heavy and cause him to self abuse himself in many different forms in different years in his formative years.
Dr. St. John talked about attempts to heal himself , in many different was. finally finding something he was able to latch on to make himself whole. The journey was not pretty and sometimes graphic.
Dr. St. John about the how his life came together after finding his path to connection. Let's face it a lot of us are still struggling with the things that were done to us by parents, siblings, family and friends.
Dr. St. John was able to re-connect with parents before their death and stated that they were all in good place .

Sara's journey is deep for it only to be only for 17years until this point. Sara and I hit all the high notes in her life as we discussed the time for youth Softball to the Pro's.
Sara started her journey as most young people do. By trying out many different sport, but she came to fall in love with Softball very quickly. Even though she continued to play other sports to be a well rounded athlete. This is something many High level coaches and players say that is very important for kids to do.
We talked about her High School years and the backwards college recruiting at the time. She went on to set many High school records at Eagan High School and in the state of Minnesota. Most of them were held by her High school coach at the time.
Sara new at young age she wanted to be a Gopher Player and her came true. We chatted about her time in Maroon and Gold and the Coaches, Players and staff that helped her along the way to be coming a B1G Champion, All B1G and All American. We looked backed at the ups and downs at the U in the first couple of years. (unfinished Business as we would say)
As Sara moved on to the Pro's we discussed that experience and how it shaped her future life after playing in the Pro's. It was a life's dream fulfilled as she got to rub elbows with some the greats of the game.
Sara is now a business owner with her former teammate in Eagan. Also, lives in Eagan with her husband and dog. Strike Zone Sports (SZS) is a Softball trainings center that teaches the skills of Pitching, Hitting and Defense to the next generation players in the state of MN.
