Sometimes you make a handy discovery that makes you wonder why you did not know about it long before. I just had that happen with PowerToys Run, one of the toys included in the full suite of items in the electronic toybox known as Windows PowerToys.

PowerToys are a set of utilities that allow you to customize different aspects of Windows and offer functionality that is not directly built in. You can learn more in general and find details on installation in a handy Microsoft Learn article.

I installed the most recent version of PowerToys because I had read about something new known as Advanced Paste. That is not the discovery though.

After installing PowerToys, I used one of my more common shortcuts in Windows Alt+Space to bring up the system menu for an application. That menu is where you find entries including restore, close and the one I often use, Maximize. My web browsing windows in particular often get sized quite small and with responsive design much of the content I’m expecting has disappeared so maximizing the browser window is necessary.

Imagine my surprise when instead of what I was expecting, my screen reader communicated, “query, edit.”

It turns out this is the default shortcut for the aforementioned PowerToys Run. In short, this is like having a command line to do everything from choosing between open windows on your computer to performing quick calculations, file, and web searches, browsing the Windows registry and more.

Using PowerToys runUsing PowerToys Run is fairly straight forward. Press Alt+Space, enter some text and arrow through the results. You can start your text with various text characters to direct PowerToys Run what you want to do. The full list of text to use here is detailed in a Microsoft Learn article.

Some examples I am finding I have already incorporated into my daily use include:

  • <, that is the less than symbol: Window Walker, to browse through all the open windows on your computer. Start pressing down arrow after entering the less than character, or add part of the window name and then down arrow to shorten the list.
  • $, that is the dollar sign character: Windows Settings to, as you would expect, browse through all the different settings for Windows. As with Window Walker, just start pressing down arrow after entering the dollar sign, or add some of the text from the setting you want and then press down arrow. In either case, when you reach the item you want, press enter and that settings page will open.
  • =, that’s the equals sign: Calculator for performing calculations. Just enter your calculation and the result will be displayed. If, as I do, you are using a screen reader, the fastest way I have found to read the result is to press down arrow after entering my calculation. Note that you do not need to press enter after you have input your calculation. Also, again if using a screen reader, if you are comfortable with advanced screen reading techniques such as the JAWS Touch Cursor, NVDA Object Navigation or Narrator navigation commands, the result of the calculation and more can be read with these techniques. Last, after your result is displayed, you can press enter on the result and have it put on the Windows Clipboard.
  • !!, that is two presses of the exclamation mark key: History, quickly browse through your history with PowerToys Run with presses of down arrow.

Some NotesPowerToys Run documentation indicates you can change the default shortcut for launching from Alt+Space.

According to PowerToys documentation, pressing tab is supposed to move you through search results and any buttons or context menus that exist. I am not finding anything being communicated by multiple screen readers as of now when using Tab. I still need to figure out if this is a case of the key simply not working or items taking focus not being communicated properly.

Flying home from a recent vacation, I had a first for myself. I independently used the in-flight entertainment system to track my flight, listen to music, and watch a movie with audio descriptions. I even played a bit of trivia for a bit. How fun!

I’m not sure when United Airlines added accessibility to their in-flight technology, but it was available on the return flights of my trip. The system used TalkBack and a two-finger triple-tap to start the screen reader. There was a video offered to show you how to use the system. I was in the proverbial cheap seats, so I used just the touch screen option for control. Apparently, premium seats get physical buttons in the arm of the seat as well.

Aside from the map showing you flight progress and some games, I found all the other experiences worked well with TalkBack. Those that didn’t were indicated by a message talking about not being available with TalkBack. In the case of the flight map, the alternative to tracking flight distance, elevation, and such did work with TalkBack. I do wish that display had a compass option as well, but the experience just worked, so what more can you ask for when it comes to accessibility? Picking my own movie, having audio descriptions, and being able to check on my flight independently was pretty sweet!

One of the larger changes I’ve encountered in the Mac OS 15 betas is not immediately obvious unless you know to hunt for it. The VoiceOver Commanders item within VoiceOver Settings has been replaced with an item named Commands. But this is far more than just the renaming of the same old controls.

The various tabs for the different commanders such as Numpad and Trackpad have been replaced with check boxes to turn control on or off with each of those items as well as the Option key. Again none of this is new, just a bit of a different way to turn things on or off.

However, move past all those check boxes and you’ll find the new and powerful ability to customize VoiceOver commands. First off is a set of radio buttons to choose if you want to control VoiceOver with Built-In commands or Custom commands. Choose built-in and VoiceOver works the way it always has. Pick Custom commands and that’s where the power for customization appears.

An edit button becomes enabled and activating that you can customize more than 350 VoiceOver commands.

For each command the customization options are wide-ranging. You can capture a keyboard command, assign a trackpad gesture, assign a numpad command, assign a QuickNav gesture and an option key command.

Choices within the dialog allow you to filter the command list by the areas you’d expect including tables, text, information and the remaining VoiceOver command areas that appear when you bring up the VoiceOver command list. You can also filter based on the different command types, such as trackpad, numpad, assigned commands, unassigned commands, commands that are not able to be changed and more.

Using all of this is quite straight forward and a welcome enhancement for VoiceOver.

If you are not comfortable tinkering with your OS install and potential consequences, please ignore the rest of this post.

I have a range of computers I use, several of which do not meet the official hardware requirements to run Windows 11. Most notably, they either do not support what is known as Secure Boot and or do not have a TPM 2.0 chip. Every few months I see another mainstream publication write an article about how to install Windows 11 on such hardware. These all basically say the same thing, go set a few registry keys and run Windows setup. Sometimes this has worked for me and sometimes not.

Recently I tried what has proven for me to be the most reliable and easiest option here. This involves using an open-source program called Rufus to create a bootable USB drive. Note, even though you are creating a bootable drive, you do not have to boot off the drive. You simply need to run the setup off the created drive.

Take note, use the download links within the table of product versions. The other download links are for different ads on the site as near as I can tell.

In addition to downloading Rufus, you’ll want to download an ISO file. Windows 11 ISO files can be downloaded from https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

Locate the heading that says, “Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices” and then download the ISO file.

Once you have these two downloads, run Rufus, ensure you’ve selected a USB drive and the ISO file from within Rufus and choose to start. Another dialog will come up with various setup options including a check box to bypass the Windows 11 hardware requirements. This is checked by default. Start the USB creation process at this point.

Once your USB drive is created, open it from within Windows and run Setup. Again, you should not need to boot off the USB drive. Finish setup and your OS will be updated.

Within Rufus as I mentioned you can select an ISO file. Although it isn’t announced as a split button, the select button here does support that functionality. Instead of pressing space or enter, press Alt+Down arrow and you can choose between select and download. If you do not have an ISO file, arrow down to download and press enter. You’ll return to the same button but this time it will be named download. Now press space or enter.

You are then given choices for Windows version, edition, and language. Each of these are separate selections where you pick from a list, choose continue and advance to the next choice. Eventually you reach the standard file save as dialog.

Note, although this process will update your computer to a released Windows 11 version, if you try and take actions such as joining the Insider program, the hardware checks for those installs will still fail. Additionally, the process of creating a bootable USB drive from a Windows Insider ISO is not supported by Rufus. You can create the drive, but it too will fail hardware checks. The Rufus FAQ clearly says insider ISOs are not supported.

As far as I can tell, if you put your machine into this sort of a state, Windows updates for security and such appear to download properly. I suspect when the next official OS release happens, that install will not work and you’ll need to update through another Rufus-created bootable USB.

Finally, although I’ve outlined using Rufus for Windows 11, it supports creation of more than just a bootable Windows USB drive. You can explore other options from within the program.

In late July, Senator Bob Casey introduced the Section 508 Refresh Act of 2024. The text of the law has not been published online as far as I can find. The senator’s office sent me a PDF of the proposed legislation and I’m sharing it here with their permission.

I’m told the bill text should show up as S.4766 at https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/4766/text?s=8&r=16 but that there can be a backlog for legislation to show up here.

In an election year I don’t know how much traction a bill like this is going to receive but some of the accountability requirements proposed are stronger than I’ve seen before.

Section 7 of the legislation outlines the procurement process requirements. They include:

  • 30 days for an agency to report a violation of Section 508 from the time they are notified.
  • Mandatory civil penalties for delivering technology that violates Section 508 that is not less than 3 percent of the contract value.
  • A requirement that Section 508 defects be addressed within six months of being reported or the vendor faces termination of the entire contract.

There is much more in the legislation and I’m sure policy and legal experts will have more analysis in the coming months. This though is long overdue legislation in my opinion.

Any factual errors in this posting about requirements are my error. I’ve made every attempt to summarize what I’ve read correctly but please review the actual document.

Tuning into a bit of the Olympics this morning, within two minutes the reality of accessibility in 2024 is on display. Audio description for a channel showing multiple sports is impressive but the schedule view of the Olympics iOS app not so much. The progress is appreciated here but the gaps are still far too many.

NBC has taken a page from the NFL’s Red Zone and introduced a channel called Olympic Gold Zone. It provides whip-around coverage of events and live audio description of a two-box split screen for two sports mixing between live commentary is impressive as an example.

The Gold Zone channel is part of the coverage available on the Peacock streaming service. Scott Hanson of NFL Red Zone fame is one of the channel hosts. Coverage runs for 10 hours a day, starting at 6A central.

Downloading the Olympics iOS app and choosing schedule though, shows accessibility that would not make it to the metal round. My experience with VoiceOver was a jumble of words, untagged images and more. I had no success understanding the actual schedule.

Back to the Gold Zone, the live audio description is excellent. As you’d expect, you get details that are just not included in the standard TV broadcast. Player reactions, details about the stadiums, surroundings for events in the city and more. And all of that is mixed in with both the Gold Zone host and announcing from the sports. It will be a fun two weeks of athletic competition.

If you use a screen reader, the concept of audio ducking is likely not new to you. For those unfamiliar with the term, it refers to a concept where any audio outside of a screen reader’s speech is lowered automatically when a screen reader is communicating.

Apple has made some changes in this area that for me have been quite positive. You can now adjust both when audio ducking is applied and have greater control over the level of ducking. This is done with settings changes for both audio ducking and volume in iOS 18.

To make these adjustments, ensure that both volume and audio ducking are items you have added to the VoiceOver rotor. Then use those options as described here.

Previously audio ducking was strictly an on/off choice. In iOS 18, on has been replaced with two choices. You can now have audio ducking set to always or only when speaking. This leaves you with a total of three settings, off, only when speaking and always.

The ability to adjust the amount of ducking is a bit more subtle to discover. In fact, originally when I discovered the option to adjust volume to percentages above 100%, I thought it was a bug. Setting a volume of greater than 100% was not producing any detectable change for me and in fact it seemed odd to be able to set volume to more than 100%.

The way this all works together is that setting a volume of greater than 100% is actually lowering the volume of audio when ducking but controlling the amount of ducking applied. For example, when setting a volume of 105%, the audio that is ducked, is ducked by 5% from the original volume. Likewise, set a volume of 150% and audio when ducked, and audio is half of the original volume.

The ability to adjust the amount of ducking is a welcome enhancement. Depending on the source audio, the amount you want it lowered to still be audible but not impact screen reader speech can vary greatly. The result here is like having a specific volume control for the ducked audio.

Again to use these features, ensure that both volume and audio ducking are added to the VoiceOver rotor. Go into Settings:Accessibility:VoiceOver:Rotor and select those options along with anything else you want to use.

In my experience, a fundamental disconnect exists between accessibility and the investing world when it comes to a statement that is blasted all over every investment web site when you are about to invest. You will read the statement that you should carefully read the prospectus before making any investment. Good luck with that as in my experience these documents are rarely, if ever, properly tagged for accessibility.

As just one example, typically deep within the multipage documents are tables of the individual investments the mutual fund or ETF holds. Yet the tables in every prospectus I’ve tried to read, more than 50 in the last few weeks, from at least 20 different companies, fail to tag tables properly.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to accessibility of these documents. Should we talk about the charts and graphs in the same documents?

The Securities and Exchange Commission should mandate that to sell securities in the U.S. at least, all investment materials need to be WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA conformant and give the industry one year to comply. If legislation is needed to make such a mandate enforceable, then congress should craft and enact such.

Given the number of employers who include 401K programs as part of employment, every company who offers this to employees should be holding the investing world accountable today for this.

If anyone knows of an investment company or ETF or mutual fund provider who actually does these documents correctly today, I’d love to hear about it.

What often gets lost in all the talk of accessibility, conformance, WCAG standards and more is how challenging task completion can be for an end-to-end experience. I recently celebrated another birthday and have been doing part of my overall evaluation of financial tools and services I use as a part of my financial life.

I did this back in 2017 when I moved back to Wisconsin and again in late 2022 when I changed jobs. This time the driving factor is nothing quite so dramatic but rather a departure from one financial services company that simply wasn’t making progress on some accessibility basics where I honestly thought they might be different.

I’m certainly not here to give anyone investment advice but for my purposes have been evaluating ETF screeners from several of the leading financial services companies and industry resources. I’ve yet to find one that I’d consider truly usable with a screen reader and just about everyone I tried had at some point a blocking accessibility issue.

Frankly, the interactions required here are relatively few to complete the task. Choose from various criteria for the evaluation, get a list of results to interpret the data and be able to take action on items of interest.

The disappointing thing is that most of the accessibility failures are still the same basic challenges of poorly named controls, custom web controls that fail accessibility, poorly constructed tables, charts that fail to address accessibility and more.

None of the tools I tried were completely broken. But kind of works doesn’t cut it for this kind of task. Nor does mix and match between providers to work around issues in one tool.

What is also disappointing here is that the biggest workaround for these sorts of challenges is often downloading the results for processing in Excel or another application. However, every experience I tried puts a restriction on the number of results you can download to the point that downloading the data is not a realistic option.

Unlike my previous forays into this task, a new wrinkle about being able to download the results has also emerged and was present on more than one site. By this I mean that you actually have to interact with some control to choose the type of file you want and those experiences fail web accessibility basics.

These sorts of tasks need to be models of web accessibility. I’ve long said that it is a struggle to try and accomplish a task, learn the experience and wrestle with accessibility issues all at the same time.

Add in the fact that in an area such as financial tools, it isn’t enough to be accessible. A financial tool that is very accessible but works poorly at the financial task is not helpful. Additionally, assuming there was something that stood out in this area, changing financial service providers isn’t always a straight forward option. It can be costly, has potential tax and other consequences and may not even be possible depending on the type of investment account you are trying to move.

Finally, much like healthcare, financial management is a highly personal task. Many of the last-resort strategies of asking a friend or family member to assist are not good options here.

In just about every case, the tools I’ve tried come from industry players who have ongoing accessibility efforts with people who I am sure are as dedicated to accessibility as I know I am. Given my own employment and as I wrote in my post on Ethical Accessibility I understand the challenges for everyone involved in these situations.

Several of the same companies here are listed as corporate partners for Disability:IN. Perhaps that organization needs to expand what they measure as one example.

Those more familiar with the legislative and executive processes of government may know if an agency such as the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) could adopt a requirement for any organization involved in the buying and selling of financial instruments having to meet certain accessibility criteria to conduct such business. Legal requirements tend to bring a level of clarity, for better or worse, that is otherwise hard to achieve in many organizations.

Many of these organizations already make claims of acting as a fiduciary, especially if you use their advising services. I find it hard to call this an accurate statement with the cornerstone of fiduciary responsibility to put a client’s need ahead of your own interest. Comprehensive accessibility would seem to be a must if you were serious about this.

Writing 101 would say I should close this post with some call to action or other engagement strategy. Well, there is no great close here just now beyond a call for the financial industry to step up efforts because what is happening today is broken.

Apple recently introduced Personal Voice to newer devices on various hardware in their lineup. I have had a little experience with the basic concept behind this sort of technology from my time at Microsoft where I dabbled with one of Microsoft’s Azure cognitive services to do something similar.

The basic concept behind these experiences is that you record some set of known text and then software converts that into a synthetic version of your voice. In Apple’s case it is 150 phrases ranging from just a few words to maybe at most 20 words in a single phrase.

After you finish recording, there is some processing time and then your voice is ready to use. On an iPhone 15 Pro, my voice was ready in about five hours. You are not able to do anything else with the phone while this is happening. On an M1 MacBook Air from 2020, processing took about two hours and I was able to do other tasks at the same time, such as writing this blog post.

Once your voice is created, you can use it as one of the voices available with Apple’s Live Speech feature. This allows you to type in various apps where you would typically use your voice and have the synthetic voice used. It compliments the existing voices Apple makes available and has the added benefit of allowing you to have some relationship to your own voice used in the experience. In situations where a person may know that they are going to lose their voice ahead of time, it does offer some ability to preserve your own speech.

Multiple factors influence the quality of the end result here—Microphone, recording environment and more, just to name a few. For short phrases it likely is not noticeable but in my sample, even the pace at which I appear to have read the samples was different. There is a 21 second difference in having the voice read back the same text.

I made two voices in trying this experience. The first was recorded using the default Apple headphones on an iPhone 15 Pro. The second using an Arctis 7 headset. Both samples are my Apple Personal Voice reading my blog post on Accessibility Island.

I have also made a sample of my original voice sample of three phrases and then Apple’s Personal Voice speaking those phrases from my recording with the Arctis 7 device. The Personal Voice speaking the phrases is the result of my typing them into an edit box and asking for them to be spoken using my newly created voice. The phrases are in this recording and have the original voice sample followed immediately by the Personal Voice speaking the phrase. After all three phrases are played, the entire series is duplicated once. The phrases are:

can you call me in an hour

Did you remember to take out the trash?

Is she going to the grocery store now or in the morning?

Creating a personal voice is straight forward. On whatever device you are using, go to Settings:Accessibility:speech:Personal Voice. You’ll be prompted to record a short phrase to test your recording environment and advised of any changes you should make, such as too much background noise. You then start the process of recording 150 phrases. They do not all need to be recorded at once. When you are finished, you’ll be advised to lock your phone if doing this on an iPhone or just ensure your computer is charged if using a Mac.

When the voice is created, you can start using it with Live Speech by going to the same Speech area of Accessibility settings and going into Live speech. Turn Live Speech on and then pick from the list of voices. Your personal Voice should be listed.

If you are doing all of this with VoiceOver, Apple’s screen reader, as I did, the process of creating a voice works well with VoiceOver. You can use VoiceOver to read the phrase to be read, then activate a record button and repeat the phrase. Recording stops when you stop speaking. If you turn on a setting for continuous recording, you will advance to the next phrase automatically and can repeat the process. I did notice that sometimes VoiceOver automatically read the next phrase but not always. Focus seems to go to the Record button and I suspect there is a timing issue between the phrase being spoken and VoiceOver announcing the newly focused button.

Having created two voices, I would say it is probably a good idea to take a short break during the reading of the 150 phrases from time to time. I found myself not speaking as clearly as I wanted once in a while as well as having sort of the same singsong phrasing. Listening to my voice samples and how the voice came out, I would also say the microphone used has a big impact on the voice quality. This isn’t surprising but is made apparent to me comparing the samples of what my recordings sounded like and how that turns out when the same text is spoken by Personal Voice. I don’t think either microphone that I used would be what I would recommend for creating a voice to be used permanently.

I was curious if Apple would allow the personal voice you create to be used with VoiceOver. I didn’t expect it would be possible and that does seem to be the case.

As with pretty much anything in AI, synthetic speech is a rapidly changing technology. There are certainly higher quality voices in the arena of synthesized speech but Apple has done a good job at allowing you to tap your own voice on consumer hardware in an easy to use process. Listening to my own voice, it is clear it isn’t me and I wasn’t expecting it to be. But even on the basic hardware I used, there are characteristics of my voice present and if I were in a situation where I was going to lose my physical voice permanently, this is one option I would definitely explore further.

Opinions may differ on this, but I am of the opinion that you should not add extra instructions on the names of column headers in tables on the web. If you are going to do so, ensure it is done in a fashion that allows a screen reader to avoid announcing those instructions if the user desires not to have them communicated.

I recently encountered an experience with one of the financial services I use where some excellent table functionality is ruined by breaking this simple rule. It makes getting the actual data from the tables much more difficult. The tables properly use both column and row headers and have good keyboard navigation even when not using a screen reader as just two examples of what works well.

In the case of my financial service, an example column name is now:

Last Price, (press Enter to sort)

Because this is part of the column header, albeit hidden visually, you must now hear this or read it in braille before you get to the details for a cell when moving through a row of information with a screen reader’s table reading commands.

Instead of just hearing the column name and the value, I must hear the column name, these instructions, and then the value. This is now how the result is communicated when moving to a given cell with a screen reader’s table navigation commands.

Last Price, (press Enter to sort) $174.01-$0.81

Examining the HTML, I find this is part of the column header name.

<span class=​"screen-reader-only">", (press Enter to sort)" I would suspect this was added in an attempt to be helpful. It is complete speculation on my part but it is even entirely possible that a usability study was done on this table and one of the questions asked was if the users knew they could sort the table. I would be willing to bet, continuing my speculation, that the answer was no and this extra text for screen reader users was added.

The problem is that this breaks the actual functionality of the table. Reading through the row, you are trying to study the details of the data. That flow is interrupted by the instructions on sorting being inserted between the column header and the data. You either have to learn to tune it out or some other strategy of ignoring the instructions. Again it is inserted as part of the column name so it isn’t as if the screen reader can ignore half the column name here.

It is also interesting that prior to the table, there is a full paragraph marked up with the same “screen-reader-only” class giving all sorts of instructions on reading the table with a screen reader.

There are a range of options to improve on this in my opinion. At minimum, given the way the full site has been constructed, move these sorting instructions into the other instructions you already have for getting information from the table.

Other solutions are possible of course and my point here is more to point out how in trying to be helpful, you can easily break what works well with screen readers and other assistive technology.

AI offers many opportunities for information access among the other benefits. However, if the basics of web accessibility are not followed, the promise of that access will be difficult or more to some parts of the population.

Both Bing and Bard, from Google and Microsoft respectively, currently need to improve at one of the most basic tests here in my trials. My instruction to both AI services:

Show me a list of U.S. states in a table based on population.

In both cases I received a table with proper column headings but row headings were not present. I tried a range of commands to get them to appear with no success. I tried more with Bard leading to Bard eventually acknowledging that it didn’t know how to add row headers yet. I suspect trying similar additional instructions would yield some equivalent result with Bing.

I added an instruction to both services as my first attempt to improve the output where I added the instruction to ensure the table had proper row and column headers for accessibility. This had no impact on the result.

It is vital that the information from AI technology be accurate. It is equally as critical that proper accessibility be used for that output.

Asking both services for details on how to create an accessible table yields good results talking about both row and column headers among other points that would be common from an accessibility perspective. So both services should be following their own advice here.

As these AI experiences become, if they are not already, more mainstream in society, developers need to ensure proper standards are used for information display. My intent is not to single out Bard and Bing exclusively. These are two services I have immediate access to for experimentation but I suspect other AI experiences would yield equivalent results. I suspect anyone who has tried some of the newer AI-based image descriptions, such as those from Be My Eyes, has noticed the high quality image descriptions that are available. I’ve been curious about how I could apply that to videos so did a little experimentation.

I want to emphasize that I do not consider this a replacement for audio description. There is so much more to that experience than just giving details on what’s in an image.

The first step for my experiment was getting individual images from the video. An article on doing this with a tool called ffmpeg was very helpful and getting the images is a snap with this tool. Options for getting an image for every frame in the video, at specific time increments or a specific time are just a few of the choices you have.

This alone is one reason why I do not consider this a replacement for audio description. There is so much content, even in a single picture, that it can be overwhelming. Then too is the challenge of identifying when enough change has happened to generate a new description.

From this point, so far I’ve simply used Be My Eyes to generate a description of the various extracted images. For example, a video clip shared on social media can quickly be separated into one image per second and then image descriptions provided from Be My Eyes or another service.

I’m sure there are APIs I can explore to automate the image description part of my experiment. Anyone with experience doing this already is welcome to share your knowledge in the comments here.

My 30 minute experiment also tells me that it would be great if the various media players would add an option to describe the current scene. Again, this is not audio description but imagine if you could press a button at any point in a video and get a detailed description. The technology to make all this happen definitely exists today. Here’s hoping the media player makers will incorporate it into a user-friendly experience sooner than later.

Even without such experiences being added directly, I have found that a screen shot of the current point in time or even a photo of the television screen can yield quality results.

I view what I’ve explored here as a supplement to human-created and human-narrated audio description and will continue to explore what is possible.

Be My AI in the Clouds

Although it has been close to 40 years now, there was a time when I had enough vision to see the sky and the color and shape of clouds. I’ve been intrigued by trying Be My AI on pictures of the sky because I guess I still have memory of the different colors and shapes clouds can take.

Here is the result of one such exploration. Assuming the descriptions are accurate, the level of detail you can get is fascinating.

The accuracy of how to complete tasks, such as saving the full text chat and picture do need improvement. The current instructions from within the overall Be My Eyes app simply do not work.

Note: I recognize a blog post focusing on an image without that image is a bit empty. Unfortunately, a phone change and some editing seems to have lost the original picture.

The NFL released the 2023 schedule earlier this week. I wanted a version I could use in Excel and am sharing it here. It is a slightly modified version of a file I obtained online from Draft Kings.

I made two changes to the file so it would read column headers and row headers automatically with most screen readers.

  1. I converted the grid to an actual Excel table. This adds actual column headers and should cause a screen reader to read the column header as you arrow through a row. Dates are used as the column headers.
  2. I made the first column a header column by choosing the First Column check box under Table:Design:Style Options in the Excel ribbon. This turns the left most column into a header row. Each team has a row in the grid, with their schedule then being in the columns of that row.

The end result is to me the desired reading experience. Arrow over a row and you hear the date and the opposing team for the given team row. Arrow down a column and you hear the matchups for that week.

A while ago I wrote about transcribing audio using Word for the Web and a screen reader. Earlier this year Microsoft made the transcription functionality available for some versions of the desktop version of Word. This blog post has more details.

The uploading, editing and adding to your document part of the transcription experience is the same as I wrote about earlier. With this functionality now available in desktop versions of Word, I took the opportunity to make a brief audio demo of how you use this feature with a screen reader and the desktop version of Word.

I’m definitely late to the party on this one but recently learned about an app called VOCR. As the name implies, it adds OCR (optical character recognition) ability to VoiceOver on the Mac.

The concept behind what the app does is straight forward. Run OCR on a full window or whatever is in the VoiceOver cursor, present the to the user with commands to move around and allow mouse clicks to be issued on the items detected. The app allows for positional audio to be turned on as well, giving you a sense of where on the screen items are appearing.

I’ve been using VOCR for a couple of days now to resolve some long-standing challenges with Parallels virtualization software on the Mac and VOCR has worked flawlessly.

A mistaken press of CTRL+q when browsing recently alerted me to a very helpful change in Microsoft Edge. This brings up a feature billed as Command Palette, which allows you to enter a wide range of browser commands into an edit box.

According to details on the web page for the feature, this is an experimental feature you may need to enable. I didn’t specifically enable this feature but don’t know if I had previously done something that would have set experimental features on, assuming such is even possible on a global basis. It is also possible the feature is now on by default.

In general experimental flags have one of three states. They can be set to enabled, disabled or default. Changing a setting requires you restart the browser.

Keep in mind, as a warning on the flags page states:

EXPERIMENTAL FEATURES AHEAD! By enabling these features, you could lose browser data or compromise your security or privacy. Enabled features apply to all users of this browser. If you are an enterprise admin you should not be using these flags in production.

If you do have to turn this on:

  1. Enter edge://flags into the browser address bar.
  2. You have a few options for finding the feature flag.
    1. Use a screen reader’s find function to find palette and change the combo box to enabled.
    2. Use a screen reader’s navigate by heading feature to find the command palette and again change the combo box to enabled.
    3. Enter palette into the web box on the flags web page end search. Again change the combo box to enabled.
  3. Restart the browser.

From this point, using the feature is fairly straight forward. Press CTRL+q and focus will move to an edit box. Start entering a command and press down arrow to move through options. For example, if I enter f, options include Find on Page, Focus Location Bar, Focus Toolbar and a range of recent history and other browser commands.

If you are using a screen reader you may need to press enter once or take other actions to ensure focus is in the edit box. This will depend on screen reader settings for handling automatic switching from a web page reading mode to an interaction mode. In my case, I change the JAWS setting for Forms mode to manual, meaning I need to press enter once on the edit box for the Command Palette. If you do not change this setting, JAWS Forms Mode comes on automatically after pressing CTRL+q.

Pressing escape or moving focus away from the browser window will dismiss the Command Palette. With the Command Palette active, other browser shortcuts do not function until you either dismiss the Command Palette with Escape or use a command.

I’m a big fan of these sorts of commanding experiences. It allows me to focus on what I’m wanting to do in an application, not the memorization of how to navigate to different features. There’s a role for both ways of interaction so it is nice to have this as an option in Edge.

A while ago I wrote about a somewhat complicated way to use Windows Quick Assist to connect to another computer for offering technical assistance that worked around the lack of audio redirection in the Quick Assist environment. That is, audio playing on the remote computer wasn’t heard on the local computer. I just discovered that audio redirection now appears to be supported with Quick Assist. I’m still learning what’s supported here myself so if you try any of this, be aware I’m writing from a couple of hours of trial in my personal environment.

If you are unfamiliar with Quick Assist, Microsoft has an article going over the basics of the technology and how to use it. The short version is that two parties load the Quick Assist app, one requests a code from Microsoft and provides that code to the other. The person receiving the code can then share their screen or optionally give the person who provided the code access to control their computer. This is a common solution used in technical support for example.

For the this post, consider the local machine the computer that obtained the code for sharing and where the person offering assistance is working. Consider the remote machine the computer that is sharing the screen and is being used by the individual requesting assistance.

In many support situations, the person running a screen reader on the local machine, would not have access to a third-party screen reader on the remote machine or even where they did, the audio. This is what has changed in my exploration. Yes you could use Narrator but again without audio, you obviously wouldn’t get too far.

The controls for the Quick Assist app read like a web page so for the most part using the app with a screen reader works well. There are some critical items to be aware of though.

When the code you have requested is received, it does not appear to be shown as part of the web content screen readers read when a virtual (JAWS, browse (NVDA) or scan (Narrator mode is on. There is a copy button you can use to copy the code and paste it into another application for reading. If you toggle those virtual modes off, I also found that the code was read when tabbing as part of the name of a region on the page. I’ve shared feedback to Microsoft on this.

The biggest challenge is that you are not able to request full control for the remote computer until screen sharing starts. Once it does, a button to request full control will appear on the local computer.

In my experience, this is where things get a bit complicated. Keyboard focus seems to get stuck in a window for screen sharing. You may experience this as an area named Input of some sort. So far to activate the request Full Control button, I have had to resort to using a screen reader’s optical character recognition feature to locate the text of the request button and issue a mouse click. Again, I’ve been exploring this for just a bit now, so if there is a better way to do this, I’m not aware of it as of yet.

Once you do get the Request Control button activated, the person at the remote computer needs to accept the request. From that point, focus will likely go back to this remote input area and you will be controlling the remote computer. If this doesn’t happen automatically, tab a couple times and it likely will.

At this point you are basically running under remote desktop in a non-full screen mode on the remote computer. This means that shortcuts such as alt+tab, or Windows key combinations will go to your local computer. You can bring up the start menu in this configuration by pressing Alt+home and switch between running apps with Alt+Page Up or Alt+Page Down.

Better yet, the hotkey of CTRL+Alt+Pause will toggle the remote session between full screen and not. When in full screen, the hotkeys such as Alt+Tab and Windows key combinations go to the remote computer. Just press that same combination again to allow those keys to control your local computer. I’m not sure what combination will toggle where the pause key, which is typically to the right of the scroll lock on a full-sized keyboard is not available.

I’ve used Quick Assist with audio from both Win10 and Win11 machines for both the local and remote computer. I’ve successfully been running JAWS, NVDA and Narrator on the local machine and have used all three on the remote machine, including launching. Again in many situations the remote computer is not likely to have JAWS or NVDA and you probably wouldn’t be installing it there. My personal copies of JAWS are authorized for remote access so I do not know how that comes into play with JAWS working here.

As I said, I’m still learning what works but this is a welcome discovery for me, even with these issues. It opens up more possibilities to assist others.

If you use a screen reader, there’s a good chance you’ve used a web technology known as a live region. The short version of what this technology does is that it allows web developers to have screen readers automatically read certain text. This might be automatic reading of chat messages in a chat environment, notification about the number of characters you’ve entered in an edit box as you type each character and much more.

While live regions are not the only technology that can cause this automatic reading, the vast majority of what you’ve likely experienced does come as part of a live region.

Microsoft is seeking feedback on live regions in some of their work with the W3C standards organization. This is a modified version of a note I received from a former colleague at Microsoft. Whether you are a web developer, assistive technology maker or end user, consider sharing your feedback on live regions.

As part of the effort, the group wants to make sure we are solving the challenges with the current Aria Live Regions experience considering feedback from developers and end users.

We have created two research surveys designed to help the community understand the landscape of notifications from the developer and screen reader user perspective. If you are so inclined, we are hoping that you can provide this feedback through one or both surveys below. Discussing aria live regions is clearly an advanced topic so don’t feel bad if you don’t feel confident responding. From a user level, we are just talking about the notifications you receive while on the web. Screen readers will typically just speak these notifications and place them as a flash message on your braille display. I am curious about the limits programmed into the different AI technologies. Ask the new Bing to write a country song on drinking or gambling and it will happily do so. Pick another mainstay of country music, cheating on your spouse, and you are told Bing isn’t able to do that and it is a behavior that shouldn’t be romanticized.

Follow up asking for a country music song on guns though and Bing blasts away with a tune.

The real kicker here though is that you can replace the word cheating with “infidelity” and Bing unloads a venomous set of lyrics. Maybe Bing should write a song about itself called “Your Cheating Changing Mind”

The technology industry is racing forward to add AI in ways we can barely understand or evaluate. Behind all of this are countless decisions in programming and more, along with all the content used to train the AI models, with not nearly enough disclosure about how content is evaluated and used. Consistency also seems in need of attention.

Who decides what behaviors are appropriate? Why can Bing write country music songs on drinking, gambling and guns but another mainstay of the genre, cheating on your spouse, is blocked? If cheating is blocked, why is the same allowed by a different word?

What controls the slant given to content that is created? My questions were neutral and didn’t ask the technology to emphasize any position.

Looking at Rolling Stone’s 100 greatest songs in country music, cheating is certainly on the list of topics put to a tune in several country classics.

I didn’t ask Bing to use naughty words or write me an adult song. Broken hearts and cheating as I said are mainstays for country music along with many other formats.

There is clearly some gatekeeping going on here. The gatekeeper should be incredibly transparent about how decisions are made and consistency would obviously be nice. If cheating is a no, it should not be easily bypassed with a one-word change to infidelity.

My examples here started toying around to see how Bing would handle topics in the Steve Goodman song “You Never Even Called Me By My Name” made famous by David Allan Co, the final verse in particular. Steve Goodman wrote such classic music.

Here, Bing not only writes a song on gun ownership, it certainly reads like one that is in favor of the idea.

I also asked Bing to write fiction stories on cheating on your spouse and gun ownership. These were two separate requests.

Cheating was rejected but gun ownership yielded a story where the plot indicated gun ownership lead to less crime.

Here’s the country song on guns from Bing.

After a 17-year run of providing the industry leading and in many cases only example of an accessible NCAA tourney bracket, Terrill Thompson announced his retirement from the bracket business in a thoughtful blog post yesterday.

Thompson has pointed bracket enthusiasts to Yahoo’s Fantasy Tourney Pick’em and indicates having ongoing discussions with Yahoo staff about accessibility.

The age-old debate about the glass being half empty or half full is one I’ve had many times when discussing accessibility in both my personal and professional lives. For me it is true that technology has allowed me to do things that as a child I never thought would be possible. It is also true that technology, and the lack of accessibility at times, has cost me in multiple ways. Missed professional opportunities, judgement of my intelligence and skills through no fault of my own because I couldn’t use a particular application, extra time to find ways around issues and the full cornucopia of what I’m sure anyone who requires accessibility could recite as well. In fact I can put a fairly accurate dollar amount to some costs of accessibility barriers I’ve experienced with the financial industry in particular. There is also the cost to family, friends and colleagues because as much as one might try not to ask another to play human assistive technology (screen reader in my case), the times it ends up being necessary are still far too often.

So for me the question isn’t really about half full or half empty, it is about giving myself and everyone else an equal amount. If others are getting a full glass, those of us who have accessibility needs in my world view deserve the same.

Now that’s an easy world view to have but there is another part of reality that when you start with a world filled with inequity, the resources to address those inequities have to come from someplace. This leads me to something I’ve been thinking about a great deal of late. I’m not sure of the best term but the one that comes to mind for me is what I’ll call “ethical accessibility”.

In my opinion, one of the fundamental challenges we face in accessibility is that too often participation alone is judged as the measure of accessibility success. Many companies put out VPATs (voluntary product accessibility templates), accessibility statements and other affirmations of their commitment to accessibility. Rarely, however, does this come with accountability for when issues will be resolved, the level of investment or other commitment to an environment of no accessibility barriers. The decision making framework behind decisions around accessibility is often opaque.

My formal college degree is in journalism. I recognize the profession has evolved, not always for the best, but ethical standards were one of the cornerstones of my education. Those standards offered a clear framework for handling many complicated situations.

Many industries, for both the businesses and those working as professionals in the industry, have ethical standards. They set a level of expected behavior for everyone involved. To be clear, the absence of any standard in no way means anyone is acting unethically. That is not my point. In fact, without a standard, it is quite tough to characterize any behavior.

The vacuum created by this missing ethical standard in accessibility leaves too much too chance. It actually makes accessibility challenging for everyone involved in the ecosystem. Imagine for example, an accessibility ethical standard that said no product can be released with any WCAG (web content accessibility guideline) issues present. Now, the developer has significantly less mystery about which issues to address and the purchaser has much less of a dilemma about whether deploying a product is adding or subtracting to the accessibility of the workplace.

I’m not advocating this should or should not be the standard. Such a standard should be developed with discussion from the range of constituencies impacted. I am advocating for some standard to exist.

There is no doubt that accessibility has moved forward in multiple arenas. Again, that half full perspective. This is great. Whether it is due to legal requirements, increased awareness of the importance of diversity or the many other reasons society moves forward isn’t the point here. Rather, whether one is what I’ll call a consumer of accessibility or a producer, what I wonder about is, what does it mean to be an ethical player in this arena?

I define a consumer of accessibility as someone who uses accessibility features and content and a producer as someone who creates the same. Rarely is one isolated to being in one category. In my own life, I often fall into both categories as do many. I need accessibility as someone who uses screen reading technology. In various parts of my work, I also easily fall into the producer side because of my employment.

On the consumer side, what does it mean to be ethical? For example, if I discover an accessibility issue, what obligation do I have to report that to the maker of the technology? Equally important, what is a realistic expectation for me to wait for the issue to be repaired. A day, week, month, never? We’ve heard a great deal about “drive-by” web accessibility lawsuits of late. I’m not a fan of that behavior but what role should the law play then? What recourse does the typical accessibility consumer have? Advocacy, raising public awareness and the rest are often costly and can be quite haphazard in terms of results.

On the producer side, what does it mean to be ethical? I’m not interested in the legal requirements here, although clearly those can play a part in being an ethical accessibility producer. What does it mean though beyond any legal requirement? Does this mean you fix every accessibility issue? Does it mean you do not launch a product or service until it meets a given accessibility standard? How do criteria such as resources, feasibility of making something accessible and more come into play? What obligation should you have to communicate known accessibility issues or the decision making process behind choices?

Yes there are often accessibility policies but I urge people to read them and ask yourself if those policies answer some of the questions I’ve raised here. I have read probably at least 200 different accessibility policies and the answer is decidedly no. This is not to say they are poor and unhelpful. But there is a world of difference between saying that an organization strives for something and that it will be a certainty, whatever that certainty happens to be.

To go back to my journalism example, whether you agree with them or not, most media organizations have an ethical standard as to when an anonymous source will be used or not. Do accessibility policies give clear guidance as to when accessibility issues will be present? Clearly there are times when companies make choices to not fix certain accessibility issues.

Again, the issue here isn’t to say such behavior is right or wrong. It is to say that as an industry we would benefit from a clear standard to which organizations could agree.

Even without an industry standard, accessibility policies should be broadened to include the ethics that govern decisions for an organization, expand how situations when those standards have not been met will be communicated, how the organization evaluates itself on such a standard and more.

If I go to a restaurant, I have a reasonable expectation that what I order from the menu is what will be served. Far too often that same expectation is far from met when it comes to accessibility. In fact, were that meal given the same treatment as accessibility, I might tell the restaurant that something was missing from my meal and if I’m lucky the gap would be acknowledged but with little idea when or if I’ll ever get what I actually ordered.

Imagine five people ordered the same beverage as another example. Far too often in today’s accessibility reality what would be delivered are five glasses filled to wildly differing levels. Half empty or half full would be just the start of the discussion.

There’s been talk about accessibility being a fundamental human right. If that is indeed true, something I believe is the case, how do you measure anyone in the industry against such a standard? How many accessibility issues do products get to have before you are judged an abuser of a basic human right? Does the good the company does get measured against the harm?

These are not necessarily simple questions and the answers are not always straight forward. That said, having some sort of ethical standard to which those who want to subscribe could certainly help. I’d also say that the continued absence of this level of clarity is only going to continue the trend of more accessibility legislation because governments are finally starting to recognize that their citizens are deserving of more equality in the accessibility arena.

To give just one example here, I have written more than once about my frustration with OverDrive and the lack of accessibility to their Libby app. It seems like history in a way these days, as the app has become for me a model of positive accessibility and one I use routinely to read books and listen to audio.

When the app was first released libraries were in the end promoting a very inaccessible experience and doing so with public tax dollars. Was that ethical? How about a “secret” message visible to only screen reading users saying OverDrive knew the Libby app wasn’t accessible? Ethical, yes or no? An ethical accessibility policy could answer such a question with greater confidence.

What should any individual library have done differently and how do you factor in the availability of reading material that the experience did make available to some?

I know in the case of the Madison Public Library, they put a message on their web site where the Libby experience was promoted communicating their efforts to work with OverDrive and indicating that a “secret” message was less than ideal. This happened after I brought the issue to the attention of library and other city officials. I’ll never know what finally prompted changes but it wasn’t long after that when publicly visible accessibility efforts with the Libby app started showing up.

More than three years ago, the New York Times ran an excellent article about the challenges in accessibility for many investment firms. Little has changed in the time since that article was published. Many of the organizations mentioned are devoting resources yes but as a consumer of the results from more than one of these firms, the progress is maddeningly slow in my opinion. I can also point to direct financial costs that the lack of accessibility has caused me.

Is it ethical for companies to use these organizations to provide financial services to their employees? How do you balance the accessibility requirements against other equally important criteria? In some areas outside of accessibility, I can assure you there would be a zero-tolerance policy for violations of whatever the standard or policy in question happened to be. For a range of reasons, rarely, if ever, is that the case with accessibility today.

I don’t pretend to have all the answers here. But what I do have is the desire to see again what I’ll term ethical accessibility move forward. In my view of the accessibility world, consumers and producers would come up with a shared set of guiding principals that would govern actions in the accessibility space. Then, much like other areas where society is working to address long-standing shortcomings, you either get onboard or you don’t and if you don’t, well others can decide what that says.

Failing any industry effort, individual accessibility policies could be enhanced to cover the ethical underpinnings that will be used around accessibility.

What you don’t get to do is pick or choose. More than 25 years ago Oregon Senator Ron Wyden rightly stood up for the rights of a guide dog user who was denied access to the Senate floor. At the same time, Senator Wyden’s web site was filled with obvious accessibility errors with multiple contacts over the issue going ignored. While I am not able to find my editorial that resulted in the only phone call I’ve ever received from a U.S. senator, that was published in the Oregonian any longer, I’ll say here what I said then:

Accessibility is not a part time proposition. You don’t get to choose when you’ll make something accessible and when not. Ethical accessibility, like any ethical standard, isn’t something you turn on and off. It is easy to live your values if you can cherry pick when to do so or only because a law says you must do it.

The New Bing produces some interesting results when asking the technology to write news articles. I asked for a story on a hockey victory for the Wisconsin Badgers today along with an option for a different perspective on the story. I then asked for a story explaining the Silicon Valley Bank collapse. Next I asked for predictions on the Milwaukee Brewers for the 2023 season. I closed out my use of Bing as a news writer asking for a story comparing the CEO performances of the heads of Microsoft, Apple and Google for the last five years.

Perhaps the most interesting result is what Bing said it would not do. In response to my request for the 2023 Brewers, Bing responded that it couldn’t write a news story as it would violate the copyright of news sources. It did offer a summary of the 2022 season along with what to me reads like a news story on the 2023 season including what I’d term speculation on the outcome. I’m not sure what the warning about not being able to write a news story here is really saying.

This response was also curious, given Bing had no trouble writing four other stories. I suspect it has something to do with the forward-looking nature of my question on the Brewers but it would definitely be interesting for Microsoft to publish more on how Bing is going to behave in this area. Clearly the details for the stories it did write also came from news sources that Bing aggregated and summarized and again Bing wrote on the 2023 season.

In the case of the story on hockey, the version focusing on the Badgers was just the facts. For comparison, the lead sentence of the story written from the perspective of the Colgate team that Wisconsin defeated used what I would term an opinion to call the team’s season “remarkable”. So what qualifies as “remarkable” according to Bing?

I was recently greeted by a nice surprise when using the iOS Weather app. I opened the Map and to my surprise heard the temperatures for surrounding cities to my area.

The Apple Maps experience, whether in the default Weather app or other apps where it is used, has communicated items such as cities and streets for several years. However, things such as precipitation, temperature or air quality, which are all choices you can make to add to the map in the Weather app have not been communicated by VoiceOver in the past. Now they are.

The change is both simple and powerful. Now when you move your finger around the map or swipe from object to object on the map, you hear the overlay data. So as I sit here waiting for a forecasted six inches of snow, I can now drag my finger around and hear the precipitation chances for the cities around me.

Interestingly, when you zoom out, you can get a single temperature for a state or even a country.

Again as far as I know, this is a very recent change and one I find a welcome accessibility enhancement.

My wife and I have been on what I’ve called the Escape Winter tour during part of the coldest part of the year for the past few years here in Wisconsin. We tend to book properties through various services, one of which is VRBO.

Little did I know that property owners can you review you as a guest through VRBO’s system. Imagine my surprise when for the first time this year in renting multiple properties I received an email saying a property owner had rated me and to see the rating, I had to submit my own review.

Well, I wouldn’t be writing here if as you can guess, trying to write a review, I encountered some serious accessibility issues. Beyond the immediate frustration of not being able to submit a review, I learned that other property owners can see how you are reviewed in this same system. So, you have people submitting ratings of how you were as a vacation renter that you are not able to read until you submit a review. But I’m not able to submit the review.

The first time this happened, in the end we were curious so see what was said about us, so I asked my wife to play screen reader. It was a five-star rating in the end.

We returned from this year’s Escape Winter tour a week ago today and just now received a second email that another property had rated us through this VRBO system. The same accessibility issues are more or less still present.

VRBO, at least on the desktop, appears to have made a slight change. If you are using a screen reader and turn off any web reading mode, such as the JAWS Virtual PC Cursor or NVDA browse mode, you can now tab through the ratings. Unfortunately, you have no idea what the ratings apply to as you can just read the names of the ratings in this mode, such as excellent, and such. To figure out what rating goes to what prompt, you have to toggle in and out of the web reading mode, keep track of how many times you have tabbed and in general take a lot of convoluted steps.

Experiences should be accessible and easily usable for multiple reasons. But if you are going to have a review system where people can make comments about you and being able to read those comments requires you to work through multiple accessibility challenges, I say you need to be much better.

Last week a colleague from my days at Microsoft wrote an excellent analysis of the current functionality using ChatGPT and a basic question in HTML. I had been dabbling with questions from time to time around accessibility and ChatGPT myself but hadn’t written anything formal up. Now I have.

This evening with a bit of time, I decided to see what the AI technology knew about reading web pages with several leading screen readers. The results confirmed a comment I had made in response to my colleague’s article where I said there was a world of difference between writing well, which ChatGPT does, and writing accurately, which ChatGPT certainly does not due when it comes to reading web pages with a screen reader.

My basic question was as follows:

How do you read a web page using the ?

Part of what’s key with any AI model is the content that is used for training. I suspect ChatGPT has scoured more content talking about the JAWS screen reader than any other. Answers for not only JAWS but also NVDA and Narrator asserted I should use the Virtual Cursor to read the web page. Clearly there is some model training bias going on in these answers.

ChatGPT was 100% incorrect in instructions for starting some screen readers. The technology instructed me to press the Insert key on my keyboard to start NVDA and Insert+j for JAWS. It was equally wrong on stopping these screen readers also.

In the case of VoiceOver on the iPhone and TalkBack, I guess ChatGPT wanted to make sure I really had the screen reader running. One of the first steps in both cases was to go into settings and then turn the screen reader on. Then further on, after loading the web page, I was given another set of instructions to start the screen reader.

Using the gestures you are told to use for VoiceOver, you wouldn’t be doing much reading but rather a lot of nothing. ChatGPT instructs you to use three-finger swipes to read the web page. This is in fact VoiceOver’s scroll gesture and there is nothing to scroll horizontally on web pages and it is certainly not how you would read.

It is also interesting that for the Windows screen readers, Internet Explorer is still one of the browsers mentioned. Additionally, Edge gets no attention at all.

Anyone familiar with the basic task of reading a web page with a screen reader will recognize other factual errors here.

Details matter! As these sorts of technologies are deployed for broad societal use, it is critical that those deploying the technology recognize this and work not only to eliminate factual errors from making it into the environment but also have ways for immediate correction when such are found.

I understand this is a preview and all but it is critical that such technology is scrutinized. Again, writing well is a far cry from writing accurately and in fact doing the first can compound errors in the second.

I’m not a huge golf fan but with the Ryder Cup being played here in Wisconsin, I was a bit curious about the Whistling Straits course design. There is a good hole-by-hole guide that gives a description of the course.

Selecting a more details link for any hole takes you to a page with additional information. I know enough to know that golfers can start from different tee positions and assumed the numbers for each hole represented the distance for those locations. That’s largely where my understanding of the numbers stops so I was curious why there were five numbers for each hole.

A brother of mine tells me that for those familiar with golf, the colors for each number are fairly established as far as what they mean. Black represents the distance for professionals for example.

This to me is an excellent example of what not to do for web accessibility as far as conveying information with color alone. For those who do not see the colors, as obvious as they might be to golfers, the numbers by themselves are clearly not obvious. Similarly, for those less familiar with golf, I contend attaching a descriptive word to each number would be of benefit.

This is also an illustration of why manual review of web accessibility is so important. I ran multiple accessibility tools on one of these pages. Some contrast errors with other text on the page were flagged but not a single automated tool called attention to these numbers. Automated testing is just not at the point to handle that level of analysis.

This is going to be an example I add to my learning materials on web accessibility. For me it illustrates the concept of not using color alone quite well.

I’ve written a few times here about virtual machines. VMWare has just added a new entry into the tools available with a technical preview for VMWare Fusion running on Apple silicon hardware. Full details and a download are available in this blog post.

So far my trial of the preview has been quite successful. The software itself works for me as well as it has on Intel-based Macs with VoiceOver. Creating VMs, management of the machines and the other tasks you would want to do are all working well.

The preview doesn’t seem to support automatic OS install so when installing an OS on a virtual machine, you’ll need to go through a manual install. I had no issues doing this with two different Linux distributions and have them working with both speech and braille and the Orca screen reader.

Given Orca, like many other screen readers, uses the caps lock key as a screen reader key, you’ll want to use VMWare preferences to assign another key as caps lock. I personally assign the accent key on the top left of the keyboard as this key and it works great.

As far as I know, there is not a Windows ISO one can use here. If I find differently, I’ll update but based on what the Windows Insider pages say, I think Windows for ARM isn’t available for this sort of a scenario.
