On this episode I share how believing two thoughts created so much misery for too long. Our brains offer us thousands of thoughts each day, some are true and some are stories and some are downright lies. Unfortunately, for me, I believed two lies my brain offered me, causing nothing but worry and despair. And I could have prevented weeks of feeling so miserable if I had just done one simple thing: challenge those thoughts. It may sound too easy, but I promise it works. Listen today and let me show you what a difference it can make.

It's been a while, I know. But I am back! Today I will briefly explain part of my journey over the last few months and one way that helped me climb out of my own discouragment and worry spiral. And it all has to do with understanding my "why" for everything I do.

There is so much we can discover when we are still and ask oursleves "why". The key is to ask "why" 5 times. When you can answer honestly, you will discover what your true intentions are. The awareness this brings may surprise you, or not.

In this episode I briefly share how EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) Therapy helped to unlock not only the trauma from Jessica's death, but trauma from years before. I will explain what it is designed to do and my own experience with it.

If you are experiencing any type of trauma, I highly recommend finding a therapist who is trained in EMDR therapy. The results can change your life!

It's been awhile, I know. Over the last month, my emotions were quite heavy overall. I have felt the pain and sadness of Jessica's absence more than I thought I would. And it confused me. Afterall, it has already been a year and half since her death. Shouldn't I be feeling better by now?

The truth is, I continue to feel the waves of sadness and pain. It comes and goes, but last month it came and stayed. In this episode I will share this experience and discuss how, through understanding what I was feeling, visualization, and ultimately self-compassion has been helping me heal my wounded soul.

Shortly after Jessica died, I started to travel down the road regret. suddenly I found myself in the state of “ wish I would have and wish I could have”. I wish I would have told her I loved her more often. I wished I would have not gotten so angry over petty things when she was growing up. I wish I would have stopped her from hiking that day. I wish I would have celebrated her more on her last birthday. I wished I would have laughed with her more. And the list goes on and on.

But traveling down the road of regret led to dead ends and nothing but misery and pain. In this episode I talk about regret and how I have learned to stop it dead in it's tracks.

Shortly after Jessica's death, a friend of mine shared with me that there is a high percentage of marriages that don't survive after the death of a child. Although shocked at first that she would share this with me so soon after Jessica's passing, it gave Dave and I a chance to discuss our commitment to each other, and how we were going to make a conscious effort to turn toward each other during the most difficult trial we were facing. It would be so easy to turn inward as we process and grieve the death of our daughter, but neither of us wanted that.

In this episode I will share some simple things that we have done over the last year and a half to stay connected as we have chosen to turn toward each other.

For the past several weeks I have been going through pictures and trying to organize them.

Each picture created a memory and gave me a chance to reflect on how our family has evolved and grown over the years. The experiences captured in these pictures not only tell a story, but they also create feelings of love that have deepened over time through shared experiences.

Usually, the way we process the experiences in our lives is what creates the feelings we have about that experience. Our perception of any experiences creates an emotion. And it is those emotions that jog our memories.

There are many times in our lives when we feel something, a feeling so strong and undeniable during certain experiences. These feelings can bring tears of joy. Have you ever experienced something like that in your life? I would be willing to bet we all have a time or two. These strong, undeniable feelings can fill you with so much joy and happiness, it’s as if your very your very soul fills up with light, even for a moment. These are the experiences we always want to remember. But if we are not careful, they can be so easily forgotten.

In today's episode I will share with you what I am learning about the importance of remembering, why we forget so quickly, and how we can make sure to keep these memories from fading away.

This month was filled with celebrations, and also many "firsts". During the first year after a loved one dies, you experience the holidays and celebrations for the first time without them, and it can be so painful. I've struggled a lot this month, and my tears flow daily. But as I have reflected on the memories each "first" presented, I'm seeing the miracles we've experienced along the way.

Ronald A. Rasband reminds us that miracles are a lifeline from heaven to earth. And I believe that 100%. As I have been finding and reflecting upon my own miracles, the sorrow has become less heavy. When we seek for our miracles, with even just a tiny particle of faith, God will show them to us.

But as I continue on this journey, I am coming to understand that resiliency is definitely not that at all. On today's episode I will share what I am learning about becoming resilient and how it has helped me.

There will be times in our lives when we receive strong impressions. Sometimes those impressions make sense, but more often than not, at least in my life, they don't. Today I will share one such impression with you and why I am so grateful that I followed it even though at the time it didn't make complete sense.

I will also share with you what I learned from feeling angry. I am realizing that anger is a natural emotion that occurs when going through any type of grief. When it hit during these last few weeks, it was difficult. I tried to ignore it, I judged myself for it, and then I decided to let it be there. Today I will share where the anger was coming from for me and how I let it teach me.

I confes, I am a self-improvement junkie, so to speak. My bookshelf is lined with a wide variety of self-help books spanning the topics of, marriage, motherhood and parenting, spiritual growth, goal setting, productivity, mindfulness and meditation, personal growth, mental health, etc. In most of these types of books, the authors usually have some type of formula, or how-to tips or lists to follow in order to succeed in whatever the topic is they are writing about it.

And, like you, I try to do all the things, most of the time following them to a "T". The interesting thing, though, is that I'm not always happy or successful.

In today's episode I share with you another thought that has helped me understand the reason why I am not always happy or successful after doing all the things on those how-to lists. This thought is: What I do doesn't make me happy; what I think, does.
And spoiler alert, this thought can be applied to aspect of our life.

When we are feeling stressed, often our brains get stuck thinking that there is only one option regarding the situation.   For many, thinking there is only one option available, causes immediate overwhelm and sometimes even a little panic.

In today's short episode, I will teach you why your brain wants to hold onto this belief and the most effective tool to help your brain let go and step into believing that you really do have many options available when it comes to any situation.

By intentionally using this tool, the stress will disapate and you will feel much calmer and reassured.

I don't believe in coincidences. I don't. I believe that God always has my back and what some people call coincidences, I call tender mercies.

Tender mercies are described as very personal and individualized blessings, strength, protection, assurances, guidance, loving kindnesses, consolation, support, and spiritual gifts we receive from and because of and through the Lord Jesus Christ. (David A. Bednar)

Knowing that God has my back and will bless me with the tender mercies I need, gives me hope and assurance, especially when I’m going through a personal challenge. Tender mercies remind me that I am never alone, and knowing that gives me the strength to keep going .

On today's summer short episode, I share a few personal examples when it was clearly evident that God always has my back.

God doens't work in coincidences. He extends to us His tender mercies.

I have come to realize that before I can make any type of improvement or progess in my life, I have to create shifts in my thinking and belief first. These shifts don't have to be big. In fact, consistently making small shifts in my thinking have created amazig results. Massive success doesn't always require massive action, or massive thought change.

In his book, Atomic Habits, James Clear states, " by making 1% improvement in a host of tiny areas, the cumulative benefits would be extraordinary." And I would add that this is only possible when we make those 1% shifts in thinking first. We can do all the things on someone else’s list that they claim will make us successful, but until we make those 1% changes in our thinking, bridging the gap from unbelief to belief first, we will only get frustrated.

In this short and sweet episode I share the story of how this principle created remarkable results for the Brittish Cycling team, as well as my own personal example.
I will also introduce how to bridge the gap between unbelief to belief.

Yesterday I saw a sign that read, “Don’t look back. You’re not going that way”. This has become a very popular sentiment, especially when it comes to our mental health and well being. But, I don’t fully agree with this idea of not looking back. I think there can be real value when we look back.

In this short and sweet episode I will explain the three different lenses that we most commonly look through when we "look back".

  • The lens of regret and shame
  • The lens of nostalgia
  • The lens of accomplishment and growth

I believe that there is a very real difference when we look back and stay in that space, vs. looking back to see where we've been. I will share a personal example that shed some light on this for me just recently.

I do believe that sometimes looking back can actually give us the momentum to keep moving forward.

Sarah and I are back to discuss even more ideas on how to create positive and loving relationhsips.

It's no secret that men and women think differently, act differently, and feel love differently. And because of this, marriage relationships require a lot of time and effort to create the love we desire.

In this episode, Sarah and I will discuss:

  • What love looks like within a marriage,
  • How to understand your spouse’s love language and why that is important,
  • Why the popular belief that we can fall into or out of love anytime is not true.
  • Why marriage and family relationships are so important

Join us as we share what we have discovered within our own marriage and family relationships.

Episode 100 is here, and I knew I wanted to discuss something that is extremely important to me. This topic is something that I am so passionate about, and one that I have devoted most of my life, my time, and my energy into. Over the years I have learned that anything that is important to me, requires a lot of attention and work, but the rewards along the way are amazing.

So the topic I chose to feature on this 100th episode is creating strong, positive and loving relationships, particularly Marriage and Family relationships. Of all the roles I hold in my life, being a wife and a mother are the two most important to me.

Because this topic is one of great importance, I invited Sarah Curtis, an expert in the field of Marriage and Family relationships, to discuss these things with me. I have a very special guest with me here to discuss how to create those strong, positive, and loving marriage and family relationships, because this is something we are both passionate about. Not only is Sarah a wife and mother of five sons, she holds a Ph.D. in Marriage, Family, and Human Development and taught marriage courses at BYU for several years. She is fun, positive and passionate about sharing her knowledge.

On this episode we will be discussing:

  • the definition of marriage competence
  • positive Affect within your marriage
  • what to look out for when it comes to resolving conflict within your marriage

Below is a list of references she shares:

I am not naive to the fact many things we experience in this life aren’t always described as fun. I get that, believe me. There are so many circumstances that can seem very heavy and serious.

But I also believe that sometimes we can make even our everyday circumstances a lot harder than they really are because of the thoughts we believe about them; the stories our brain is making up about those circumstances.

Take summer, for instance. The kids are out of school and home 24/7, and the infamous "I'm bored" is what you hear over and over again. And your brain wants you to believe that it is now your job 24/7 to etertain them. How does that feel? Pretty stressful and overwhelming, right?

On today's episode I discuss the thought "Make it easy. Make it fun".

I admit, when I first heard this thought, I rolled my eyes. I'm the kind of person that , takes life pretty seriously for the most part. And sometimes I've even judged people who have such a way of making everything they do, even mundane tasks, seem fun no matter what. And a lot of times I could not wrap my head around it.

But this thought, make it easy, make it fun, really is asking the question, how can I make this situation easy and fun? How can I respond to this circumstance in an easy and fun way?

And this question feels light and freeing. It gives me the opportunity to explore another perspective regarding the circumstance.

I really like this thought because it helps me to focus on keeping things simple. And for me, when I keep things simple, I feel a lot less stress and overwhelm.

Everything we create in our lives is the result of what we think in response to the circumstances we experience. One of the tools we use to become aware of why we are creating our current results is the Model.

But what about understanding our inherent identity?

We know that we are all children of God, born with unique gifts and talents, but what are some ways that we can discover our unique identity?

On today's episode I talk with Identity coach, Tyson Bradley., who has developed one Method to answer that question, called the I AM ME method.

Tyson Bradley is the host of the Inherent Identity Podcast and the Author of the book Reclaim Your Inherent Identity: The 5 Steps To Instant and Lasting Change. He is happily married and the proud father of 2 redheaded girls and baby boy. He has studied mindset and behavior change over the past 10 years and has finally cracked the code on the fastest way to make change happen.

Tyson will walk us through each step of his I A.M. M.E. method and explain how using his I A.M. M.E. method awakens the remembrance of our inherent identity, and explain how pairing the model with his method helps us make the changes we want to make in an easier, more aligned way.

Because I believe self-awareness is so important, I use a tool with my clients that is somewhat of a "magic wand" so to speak. It's a very simple but highly effective tool, called "The Model". This Cognitive Behavior Therapy tool was created in a very simplistic way by Master Certified Life Coach, Brooke Castillo that helps see that everything we create in our lives is the result of what we think and how we feel.

For me, the model is like a puzzle, that, when all the pieces are found and put together just right, a beautiful picture is revealed. Each part of the model are the pieces that build upon each other, in order to reveal what it is your brain is thinking and feeling in relation to the circumstances in your life.

In this episode I will explain each of the 5 components of this model:

  1. Circumstances
  2. Thoughts
  3. Emotions
  4. Actions
  5. Results

And how they all work together to reveal the big picture of what your brain is creating for you right now. And that can be magical, because when you see what you are creating with your thoughts, feelings, and actions, you can change those things to create what you really want in your life.

The model is simple and brilliant.

On this episode we will explore a very simple concept, or rather a question that has made such a profound impact in my life since starting this work. It’s a question that makes you stop and when answered, puts you in control of whatever situation you may find yourself in. Here it is: How Do I Want to Show Up? Meaning:

What is it I want to think? How do I want to feel, and how to I want to be? (behave, act, respond, etc) in relation to the circumstances that I am in, or will be in.

For so long I believed that the way I felt on any given day really depended on the on what was happening around me; I thought that the circumstances or situations in my life determined how I felt, or how I responded. When I discovered that my feelings had nothing to do with the circumstances in my life, and everything to do with the way I thought about these circumstances, it changed everything for me.

The only thing we can control is the way we show up/what meaning we give to that circumstance and how we respond. and the way we respond to these circumstances will create the experience we have.

In other words, we don’t have control over our circumstances, but we do have control over how we respond.

We can intentionally DECIDE ahead of time what kind of experience we want, and create that experience no matter what the circumstance by answering the question, “How do I want to show up?”

Asking yourself this question Can be extremely useful when facing a new, or challenging experience. As I work with clients, many times during our coaching sessions I will ask them this very question. I do this for a few reasons:

  1. To help them understand that they have a choice in how they respond to their circumstances

  2. To help them understand that they don’t have to be a victim of their circumstances

  3. To help them understand that they can create the experience they want to have

  4. To help them be intentional

This one question can change everything for you!

The other day one of my sons asked me to find a picture for him, one at about the time he was 5 or 6 years old. IN my quest for this certain picture, I took a trip down memory lane, looking through so many pictures of our young family.

But what I mostly focused on was the young mother in those pictures, the younger version of me deep in the throes of motherhood.

As I looked into her eyes, I could see a mother who would do and give anything for her family, but who constantly wondered if she would ever be good enough for them. I could see a mother who, despite her best efforts, went to bed each night with a long list of regrets and things she messed up during the day, hoping that she didn’t permanently scar her children for life. I saw a woman who loved her family fiercely but often forgot to love herself, focusing so many times on her own imperfections, even questioning why God would trust her to raise these children in the first place.

If I had the chance to put my arms around her and talk with her, knowing what I know now, what would I tell her?

In this episode I will reveal the six things that I would want her and every mother listening to know, the most important being that you ARE the perfect mother for your children.

As human beings we are wired for connection and one of the strongest ways we can connect is through shared feelings, and empathy. In the last several years, researchers have actually found that our brains have what are called mirror neurons suggesting that there is biological base for empathy.

These mirror neurons allow us to understand others’ actions, intentions, and feelings. They fire when we experience an emotion or when we see others experiencing emotion. Think about a time when you saw someone experiencing sadness. What happens? Many of us would answer that we, feel sadness ourselves, without even thinking about it.

Mirroring someone else's emotions can be very helpful, on occasion, especially when it comes to validating their emotions, but where we get in trouble is when we take mirroring negative emotions too far; when we actually take on another person’s negative emotions, when we internalize them. When this happens, it creates a vicious emotional cycle where everyone ends up feeling lousy.

In this episode I will give you examples what this looks like and what it creates, and then we will discuss how we are responsible TO others and not FOR others when it comes to their own emotions. We will explore what both of these concepts mean and how your relationships will change when you understand your own responsibility when it comes to another person's emotins.

Doesn't it feel so good when someone else extends mercy towards you? When someone forgives you and has patience with you whenever you mess up? Doesn't it just make you apprecite and love them even more?

Why is it so hard to extend that same mercy and forgiveness to ourselves? Why, instead, are we so hard on ourselves?

In today's episode we will discuss the 5 reasons I have found in myself and with my clients that prevent us from extending the much needed forgiveness and mercy to ourselves. These 5 reasons are:

  1. Forgetting who we really are
  2. Forgetting that we have a human brain that likes to point out perceived problems
  3. We focus only on the negative: past mistakes, things we aren't good at, things that are wrong in our live (or what our brain THINKS are wrong)
  4. We compare ourselves to others
  5. We mistakingly believe we have to be perfect right now

You have an unlimited capacity to grow and change in the way you want to, but the only thing standing in your way is your well-meaning brain that will tell you otherwise, and tempt you to beat yourself up. But I purpose that we stop beating ourselves up and start understanding that we are enough and perfect right now.

Recently I have been reflecting on the struggles that some of my loved ones are going through. This seems to be a common theme lately with some of my clients as well. They all have someone in their lives that are struggling in one form or another, so Today I want to discuss a few things that I have noticed personally as I watch those I love struggle.

We all know, or at least we are learning, that having struggles is part of God’s plan for us. We came to earth knowing that we were going to have the opportunity to learn and grow, and that usually comes from some sort of struggle. There must be opposition in all things for us become who God knows we can become. But when someone we love is struggling, I personally think it is much more challenging to accept this truth.

I have seen three ways people usually respond when someone they love is going through something difficult:

  1. As the handyman
  2. As the villian
  3. As the judge and jury

In this episode we are going to explore each of these in more depth, then discuss why they aren't effective. Then we will discuss what happens when we put on the lens of compassion and how that changes everything.

We all have inadequacies. It’s part of the human experience. But it’s what we think about our inadequacies that can keep us from learning, growing and progressing.

I have dealt with a lot of perfectionism for years. At the heart of perfectionism is the desire to be good. Not just in behavior, but to be good at everything they do. So oftentimes people who have perfectionistic tendencies like to stay completely in their comfort zones and limit the things they do to what they are naturally good at and enjoy doing, things that come easy for them to excel at. Anything beyond that is usually out of the question for them. And the reason being is because of fear. The fear of failing or being looked down upon to name a few.

And this makes them feel very inadequate, which leads to self-judgment, self-doubt, shame, and even isolation at times.

This has shown up repeatedly in my life when I am trying something new, and many times, I tend to be hesitant to try new things. My own self-defeating thoughts have kept me from experiencing things that I may or may not enjoy. I’m sure my brain is trying to protect me, and keep me safe within my comfort zone, because that’s it’s job, but instead of protecting me, it was blocking me from discovering new interests and talents, and alienating myself from others.

On this week's episode I share three thoughts that have helped me face those fears and given me permission to step out of my comfort zone:

  1. I am willing to be terrible at this
  2. I am willing to be terrible at this, but still have fun
  3. I am willing to learn to be good at this, but willing to be terrible at it for as long as it takes.
In this short episode we will take a look at why these thoughts break down the barriers of perfectionistic self-doubt.

What do you need?

Such a simple question, right? But did you have to take a minute to answer it?
Sometimes as women we discount what we need, or don’t understand how to communicate what it is we need because we have gotten into the habit of brushing our needs aside while caring for everyone else’s needs. We women are natural care givers. It is in our DNA. We care for our families, our friends, and even strangers, first before we care for our own needs. And we are so good at meeting everyone’s needs most of the time. And it feels good to care for those we love, doesn’t it?

But what about taking care of our own needs or voicing what we need?

That part isn’t very easy for me. And I have found that as I have gotten into this habit of brushing my needs aside to take care of everyone else, I quit thinking about my own needs all together, and soon I forget what those needs even are. Or at least my brain does.

In this episode will discuss:

  • Why your needs are important
  • What happens when you "forget" your own needs
  • How to communicate what you need
  • What happens to you and everyone you love when your needs are met

We, as human beings, have basic human needs. But we also have very individual needs that are just as important. Your needs matter because you matter!

When it comes to our overall mental and emotional health, expierencing both quick wins and slow and steady progress are equally important. Our brain really likes the quick wins, but the slow and steady progress is much harder for our brains to navigate and stay motivated.

As we are working towards improving our mental and emotional health, sometimes we have to actually slow down before we make any progress.

When we experience quick wins, we feel good and go on our way. Slow and steady progress on the other hand, not only takes time, but it doesn’t always feel good because we will experience both positive and negative emotion. But this is never a problem or a sign that we are doing anything wrong.

In this episode we will discuss:

  • What a quick win is and what it looks like
  • Why quick wins are important on our mental health journey
  • What Slow and steady progress looks like and why it is important
  • How to help our brain understand how to navigate the slow and steady progress

Have you ever had someone show up on your doorstep unnanounced, who just wanted to come on in and stay for a while? I have! In fact it happened just last week. My self-critical brain showed up and wanted to stay for a while. Unfortunately, I let it in. Big mistake! Without me realizing what was happening, that self-critic started to take charge, and before I knew it, I was convinced that everything in my life was a problem. It took a few days to understand what was really happening, but eventually I was able to send that self-critic on its way.

Being human means we have a human brain, and one of its main jobs is to notice all problems. This is a good thing sometimes becasue this is how it keeps us safe. But when it wants to attack us personally, pointing out all the things that it wants us to believe are wrong with us, it can have the opposite affect.

So what do you do when your own self-critic shows up and wants to stay? In this episode I will walk you through the steps you can take to make sure that self-critic doesn't tak over when it comes for a visit.

You will learn:

  • How to gain awareness and choose to believe what it tells you or not
  • Take back control when it tries to take over
  • Challenge your self-critic and help it expand its perspective without judgment
  • Compassionately retrain your self-critic
  • Create healthy boundaries
  • Create self-compassion when your self-critc takes over for a while

Your self-critic will show up over and over again. But with these tools in place, you will be better equipt to not allow it to stay.

The circumstances in our lives are always changing, so becoming emotionally resilient is such an important skill to learn. It’s an ongoing process, for sure, but when we can become emotionally resilient we have the strength to face any challenge life throws our way .

One change in circumstance that many people find themselves experiencing is separation and divorce. For anyone going through this, it can be quite a roller coaster of emotions from anger, resentment, hurt, sadness, self-doubt, and on and on. Although I have not personally experienced this, there are many close to me who have and it hasn’t been easy to say the least.

On today’s episode, I visit with Hyo North, a Divorce and Discipleship Coach, who helps Women navigate separation and Divorce in a Christ-centered way.

I met Hyo about a year ago. At this time she and her husband had separated and were in the stages of finalizing their divorce. What drew me to her was her genuine desire to turn her own personal hurt and anger about her circumstances around and instead seek God’s direction and strength as she navigated this new change in her life.

Hyo’s goal is to help her clients realize they don’t have to walk this journey alone. She states, there is so much joy, so much goodness still out there for you to take a hold of now…not later, but now. Hyo helps her clients let go of the anger and resentment that usually occurs during a divorce, by helping them learn how to access the spiritual direction to make decisions and choices from a place of confidence, love, and peace for themselves and for their family

We cannot control the circumstances in our lives, and the circumstances in our lives cannot control us. The only thing we have control over is the way we respond to them, how we perceive them and what we make them mean, especially about ourselves.

This week we talk about why we want to hold on tightly, trying control everything and everyone in our lives, what it takes to let go, and why focusing on how we respond can be much better for us in the long run.

Being in control, for many of us, feels good. It feels safe. And that is exactly what our brain thrives on. Remember, one of the jobs of our lower brain is to feel comfortable and safe, and being in control creates this, or so we think.

But what happens when your circumstances change?

Understanding that the only thing we can control is ourselves and our response to any circumstance in our life can be liberating, and scary at the same time because it requires us to truly let go of trying to control everything and everyone else and trust. But I believe our primary purpose as human beings is to learn to do just that.

Have you ever had situations come up where you find yourself immediately reacting to them. Maybe someone said something to you or did something. Maybe it was something you witnessed or heard. Whatever it was, you reacted. And if you’re like me, you might have reacted in a way that you later regretted. I would guess we all have done it at least one time in our lives. Maybe not, I could be wrong. But I don’t think so. Why? Because we are all human!

Honestly it’s human nature to react before we think because for thousands of years this was key to human survival. We had to always be on the look out for danger, we had to be reactionary if we wanted to live.

On today's episode I will discuss a tool that has helped me understand what I was thinking on those occasions I reacted so quickly in a way I didn’t like, and then I want to talk about the POWER that happens when we take a brief pause in those situations.

So often we think it's the situation, the event, that causes us to feel a certain way. But guess what? It's not the situation at all. It's what we make that situation mean. It's the thought we have about the situation that makes us feel the way we do. And if we aren't intentional about what it is we want to think about the situation or event, our emotions might get the better of us, and we will end up reacting instead of intentionally acting.

There is so much power when we take a brief moment and pause.

It's a known fact. We all have been blessed with our own individual strengths and weaknesses. And there's a reason for this. But for many of us our weaknesses hold us back, or rather, we use our weaknesses against ourselves.

Throughout history and in the modern world, we have examples of people who have taken their weaknesses and turned them into strengths. Have you ever wondered how they did it? What was, or is, their secret?

In today's episode I will discuss the following:

  • The reason we have been given weaknesses in the first place
  • What is it that causes us to hold our weaknesses against ourselves
  • How we can turn our weaknesses into our strengths

If you find yourself stuck in the belief that your weaknesses are never going to evolve into a stregnth, then this episode is for you!

Do you have a teenager who feels like they are never enough? Who fears making even the smallest mistakes, because, to them, that means they have failed? Who is constantly criticizing themselves, for every little thing? Who, despite their many talents and accomplishments, only sees their inadquacies?

If you do, then this podcast is for you. Today I discuss teen perfectionism with Life Coach, Kendra Hoffman. At age twenty, Kendra realized that she had been struggling for years, but it wasn't until she was in her mid thirties that she found the tools, through coaching that helped her know how to manage her perfectionism.

With her natural connection with teens, Kendra continues to help teenagers learn the tools they need to manage and overcome their perfectionism, while helping parents learn how to support their teens in the process.

If you struggle with perfection yourself, the things we discuss on this episode will also help you.

Every one of us is on our own journey toward something; a final destination or end goal perhaps. Some may be working toward achieving a new goal, or making a change that will improve their quality of life. Others may be on a journey because of a significant change happening in their lives that they hadn’t expected, working toward a resolution.

Whatever your journey may be, today I am talking about why it is importat to stay focused on the journey rather than just the final destination itself.

If you're like me, you probably just want to hurry up and get to that end goal. And why? Because of the feeling you will feel once you get there!

In this episode I am going to help you understand ways that you can access that feeling throughout your journey, so you can better appreciate the growth, progress and joy along the way.

Our bodies can be a wealth of information if we take the time to listen to it. I think most of us would agree that when there is something physically going on in our bodies, it is generally easier to listen to it. However, even though we can feel it, sometimes we might not really hear it.

It’s the same thing when we are experiencing an overwhelming amount of emotions, in particular anxiety and worry. When we experience a high level of overwhelming emotions, our body and mind feels threatened in some way. And when this happens the tiny area at the base of our brain, called the hypothalamus, sets off an alarm system in our body. Our brain and body have become hijacked with an overwhelming amount of emotions. And when the alarm goes off, a surge of the hormones cortisol and adrenaline are released throughout your body. And when cortisol levels rise, all the body’s energy goes into handling the perceived threat instead of doing what it is supposed to do in a normal, relaxed state, like regulating the digestive and immune systems, for instance. When your adrenaline levels are high, your heart rate increases, your blood pressure increases, and your energy levels increases.

Now this is a very normal reaction when you really are in a threatening situation, like being chased by a lion, for example, running for your life.

But when the stress levels stay high in the absence of a real life or death threat, that can create anxiety and depression, as well as other mental and physical health issues.

In this episode I will teach you what your body is tryin to tell you to do when you are in this heightened state of emotion so that you can feel relief. And, spoiler alert, it is NOT thought work.

I reference the book "Anxiety RX" by Dr. Russell Kennedy, which you can find here

What are the things that you want more of in your life and what will you gain from having less ? Do you wanat more peace and less frustration? More space and less clutter? More security and less scarcity?

It took me a while to embrace the thought "Less is More". But as I continue to define what it means to me, it helps me recognize more clearly the gift that simplifying can be.. Am I perfect at it? Not by a long shot! And that is okay.

Choosing the thought less is more creates those feelings of peace, those feelings of contentment and security, and from those feelings, you will be able to create a life that is richer and more meaningful, and you will be able to really see and focus on the things that matter most to you.

It is 2023! A brand new year! Isn’t it exciting? When I think of a brand new year, the words or phrases that come to mind are: A Fresh Start, I feel energized, hopeful, excited, I have a renewed commitment.

For many of us, the beginning of a new year sparks the desire to set new goals.
Why do we set goals?

By Divine design, each one of us was created to learn, to grow, and to progress throughout our lives and the desire to do so is instilled in every one of us. We didn’t come to earth to just be, we came to earth to BECOME; to discover our divine potential, see what is possible, to create, and to thrive. And this feels so invigorating, and so good.

Setting and achieving goals hasn't always been something that I have been good at. I will share my journey about how setting too many goals for myself became a recipe for overwhlem, exhaustion, and even resentment. As a result, I would simply just quit.

In the last few years I have learned strategies that have made setting and achieving goals much more doable and even fun, and in today's episode I will share them with you.

These steps are:

  1. Discovery
  2. Planning
  3. Taking Action
  4. Taking control when your brain and emotions what to take charge
  5. Celebrating the milestones, no matter how small
  6. Evaluating and making adjustmets along your goal journey

Remember, the only way you are going to fail when it comes to achieving your goals is to quit.

When it comes to setting your goals, remember to Keep it simple and Do what works for you. And don’t forget, I am here for you. I would love to hear all about the goals you want to work on this year. Get on a Free coaching call, or shoot me an email and let me know how I can help you achieve what you want to this year.

For several days I struggeled to know what I wanted to discuss for this last episode in 2022 of Embrace it All. I wrote down several ideas, but nothing came together and I tried again. At one point I resigned to the fact that maybe I would just let it go and not record anything. Afterall, some of my kids are home for the holidays, and I wanted to just focus on spending time with my family. But I couldn't shake the feeling that there was something that I needed to share.

In the quiet of the moring, as I was reading, it came to me. The phrase, grow in grace.

So in this episode I share my thoughts about grace, in particular God's gift of grace through his Son, Jesus Christ. As I continue my own journey in understanding what it means to grow in grace, I am filled with gratitude for the choice that Christ made on my behalf because of His love. His grace truly is the best gift I have ever received.

I love giving gifts. It brings me so much excitement and joy. But, for as long as I can remember, finding and giving that "perfect" gift to those I love for Christmas has created a lot of stress and pressure. What if they don't like what I give? What if they're disappointed? If I don't give them the perfect gift, then their Christmas will be ruined!

Do any of these thoughts sound familiar? Feeling all that pressure takes all the joy and excitement out of gift giving, and replaces it with dread and stress, something that I didn't want to experience during the Christmas season.

This year I came up with 4 ways to relase that pressure of giving the "perfect" gift, and it has made this Christmas season much more enjoyable. Although I'm still a work in progress (aren't we all?), I wanted to share these 4 things with each of you, in hopes that you can create a very enjoyable Christmas yourself.

Our brain is  motivated by three things:  seeking pleasure, avoiding pain, and conserving energy.  Some refer to this as the brain's motivation triad.   And to achieve these three things, our brains tell us stories.  Lots and lots of stories.  And who doesn't love a good story?

But we can keep ourselves stuck when we believe every story our brain offers to us. Today I will share a personal example of that very thing and how I missed out on opportunities and possibilites.

As women, entering the mid season of our lives can bring up all kinds of emotions. For those who have dedicated the majority of their lives to raising a family, once their last child leaves home questions like "what do I do now?" "who am I, really?", and "where do I fit in?" are all too common. For years your purpose was clear, but now, not so much.

In today's episode I talk with Certified Life Coach, Jill Pack, who coaches women in the mid season of their lives to answer these questions, showing them that they truly do have a lot to offer in the mid season of their lives.

Jill shares this: " When I hit my 50’s I found myself entering a new season of life, empty nesting. I had spent almost three decades caring and serving others . Now that my role was changing, I began to wonder what my purpose was. I wondered if I even had anything to offer in this new phase in life. That is when I found life coaching. I have come to realize that life isn't over at 50. What I thought was a mid-life crisis was a mid-life awakening and it is awesome! Instead of believing life is over, I have embraced the beauty of living life to its fullest and the failure that comes with it. I am no longer afraid of failing because on the other side of it is learning and becoming more of who I want to be. I became a life coach specializing in helping women of faith create a life they love. I share tools and tips that help you manage your mind as you create more joyful connections with yourself, others, and God . I teach you how to create a life you love. One full of intention and purpose."

Jill and I discuss the little shifts she has made in her life that has led her to take one step at a time in discovering what is possible.

She will introduce the power of the pause, a concept she created to help us understand the important of taking the time to process our emotions, becoming clear on our why we do the things we do (our "why"), Protecting who we want to be by saying yes to those things that may push you out of your comfort zone in order to continue to grow and progress.

Jill is an amazing coach whose goal is to help other women of faith find the joy in the mid season of their life. She is definitely an example of what is possible. You can find more about Jill here: https://linktr.ee/seasons_coaching

As I was reading this past week on this subject of gratitude, I came across a passage that says, “In everthying give thanks for this is the will of God”. I believe that my life is a gift from God. All that I have and all that comes from Him.

After reading this, it got me thinking that maybe there is more to it than just recognizing and acknowledging the source of all our blessings. Maybe this is just part of it, and God, or the universe, whichever higher power you believe in, sees the bigger picture for us when it comes to being thankful and developing gratitude.

In this episode I discuss different studies that have shown the bigger picture of how intentionally expressing gratitude can not only benefit us, but change us. And this is what I think the bigger picture is.

Studies have shown that when we are practice intentional gratitude, we feel better mentally and emotionally, we see the world and others around us in a much more positive way, we tend to have better physical health, stronger relationships, and better resilience.

I will share 4 things with you that have helped me in becoming more intentionally grateful.

Sometimes being human, with a mortal body can be pretty hard. Especially when that body breaks down, and you begin to feel broken. Feelings of frustration, resentment resistance, sadness, and even hopelessnes can start to take hold because we think this is not how it should be. I know, because that is how I felt and thought for so long.

Now It is my belief that this idea of being broken and feeling broken can actually be a gift if we allow it to be. On this episode we will discuss what being and feeling broken looks like, why we might feel frustrated and hopeless, and what we can do to actually turn that around in order to see the gifts we receive when we are broken.

In this episode you will learn:

  • The role resistance plays when we feel broken
  • How to turn that resitance into acceptance

Have you ever tried untangling anything that was so full of knots, thinking "there is no way I'm ever going to straighten this out!", and accepting that this is just how it is going to always be? Christmas lights? Thick, long, wet hair? Yep! I hear you!

Our minds are a lot like those Christmas lights or long, thick hair. Our brains have so much information going in and out all day long, Thinking thousands of thoughts every single day, and sometimes all of it can get pretty tangled up. And when this happens, those feelings of overwhelm, confusion, frustration, anxiety can kick in to high gear, and pretty soon our emotions feel all tangled up as well. I think you all know what I am talking about. It’s like there’s this big, tangled knot in our heads and in our bodies and we just can’t seem to untangle it, and we even start to believe that this is just how it is always going to be.

I want to reassure you that this is not how it’s always going to be! There is a way to untangle all those thoughts and emotions to find the truth of what’s really going on. And when we can do this, it gets us back on track again. We can start moving forward again, seeing things more clearly.

My job, as a coach, is to take the tangled thoughts in your head and the tangled emotions in your body, and help you unravel them, so that you can see the truth. And once you see the truth, you can decide what to do from there.

In this episode I will walk you through the four steps that I use to untangle your brain and your emotions: Awarenes, Acceptance, Allowance, and Adjustment, and what it looks like working with a coach.

Our brain is constantly offering us thousands of thoughts every single day.  These thoughts come from all the information we see, we hear, and we experience.   Sometimes we think that when a thought is offered by our brains, we somehow are responsible for that thought;  even if the  thought offered  isn’t something we want to keep because of the way it makes us feel.  To make it worse,  we might think that it’s  our fault for having that thought offered to us in the first place, and so we make ourselves wrong for it.

Our brains are constantly thinking.  That’s what they are designed to do. But we have the power to accept or decline the thoughts that our brains offer to us.  And we can do this without turning it into a whole dramatic, shameful thing.

On this episode we will be discussing the fact that our brains are the creators of all our thoughts, not us.  Our responsibility is to choose the thoughts we want to let in and let go of the ones we don't.  I will share 6 tips that will help you learn how to be more intentional on the thoughts you choose to keep.

This idea of being enough is something that I believe most everyone faces.  The definition of the word "enough is this: occurring in such quantity, quality, or scope as to fully meet demands, needs, or expectations.  Now, I don't know about you, but I don't think there is one person on this planet that can say they fully meet every demand, need and expectation.  Whether you are in the coporate world or a stay at home mom, it usually seems that no matter what you do it is never enough.

Now being enough and doing enough are not the same things at all, but I think, sometimes we think they are.   On this episode we will explore the differences between  being enough and doing enough.  I will share a few tips on how to let go of the thoughts "I will never be enough" and "No matter what I do, it is never enough" and understand for yourself that you, my friend, are absolutely enough!

We all like to be surrounding by people who are cheering us on, supporting and encouraging us in everything we do. Some of our biggest fans are usually our parents, spouses, children and friends.

But what about you? Are you your biggest fan?

I am going to guess that if you are like me, naming yourself as your biggest fan was the furthest thing from your mind. Maybe you just didn’t think about it, maybe the idea seems too boastful or doesn’t seem to sit right with you, or maybe it’s because you can’t see the reasons to be your biggest fan; you focus more on where you think you fall short, instead of who you are. Does this sound like you? I coach many who fall into the last category.

One of the ways that prevents us from becoming our biggest fans is negative self-talk. Negative self-talk may seem innocent at first, but it is pretty toxic, because how we talk to ourselves reflects what we truly believe about ourselves.

On this episode I talk about four ways to stop the negative self-talk, to get you on the road to becoming your biggest fan.
I know that this isn’t easy. I have to work on this every single day because my inner critic is always there. But I have seen the progress and I know you can too. And if you want to become your biggest fan, but need some extra help, get on my calendar by clicking the link below

In this episode I discuss what resisting and avoiding my anxiety looked like for me just the other day. Most days I am able to acknowledge and process the anxiety I wake up with, but this time it was very intense. My anxiety was trying to tell me something and I just wasn't listening. Instead, I kept pushing through, thinking that I had too much to do to and coulnd't wast any time. The only problem was, the more I pushed, and avoided the anxiety, the less I could get done.

The anxiety I felt was like a toddler, who wanted my attention, and when I wouldn't give it that attention, it got louder and louder. It was only after I consciously made the decision to listen, that my anxiety started to disappear.

What is your anxiety trying to tell you? Sometimes we can understand it, and sometimes we cannot, and that is where I come in. I believe that there are several resources to help with anxiety management, coaching being one of those tools. Coaching gave me more tools to help me understand the anxiety I feel in a way that makes sense to me.

Maybe you feel like you are all alone in this struggle. I know I did. But I want you to know that you are not alone. We can work through this together.

As many of you know, I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Twice a year the leadership of our church (our Prophet and Apostles, and other leaders) conduct what we call a General Conference, a conference for anyone who would like to hear the messages they have prepared to the general membership of the church. During their messages, often times we will hear the word "should". Now, for me, that word should can trigger a lot of anxiety. When I hear the word should, I often think it means, "I have to" , or "I am not doing enough. I have to do more, and more, and more". It creates so much anxiety for me when I have these thoughts. But today I want to share something that I have discovered, for myself, that might help you, especially if the word "should" creates so much anxiety for you.

I have come to really enjoy these conferences by making this one little shift.

If hearing all the "shoulds" this weekend seems overwhelming, then let's talk and figure out what you are making that word mean for you. Who knows, you might come to enjoy listening to General Conference so much more!

When you think of indulging in something, what would it be? For me it is chocolate chip cookie dough. Whenever anyone in my family makes chocolate chip cookies, I am right there with a spoon ready to test the dough. And warm cookies right out of the oven...yes, I will indulge in a few.

When we indulge in something we yield to the desire of that thing or give free rein to it.

Without even realizing it, many of us allow ourselves to indulge in certain thoughts and emotions, thoughts that have become automatic or what I call our "go-to" thoughts like:
I have so much to do!
I don't know where to start.
I don't know.
What if this happens or that happens?

And these when we indulge in these thoughts, it creates the indulgent emotions of overwhelm, confusion, anxiety or worry. Although these emotions might be our normal, "go-to" emotions, they are never useful. In fact all they do is keep us stuck spinning in circles, preventing us from moving forward.

And, more often than not, these indulgent thoughts and emotions are a cover-up for what is really going on.

I will explore why we often indulge in these thoughts and emotions and explain how to recognize when we do, and what we can do to stop.

In this episode I share my personal experience of how my coach ucovered  my feelings of being overwhelmed only to reveal what I was truly feeling:   self criticism and self judgement.
When I was in this space, of judgement, and self-criticism,  I wasn’t able to do anything.  I wasn’t present with my family, , I wasn’t working on my goals, or creating anything in my business, I wasn’t focusing, I wasn’t moving! I was stuck.  It felt like I was on a merry go round going round and round in circles but getting nowhere.

I will share the questions she asked me that got to the heart of the matter and helped me to get unstuck and  appreciate myself once again.

There is always more than one way of seeing things or interpreting the situations we experience.  Our brain is the lens through which we see the world around us.  As it filters  information coming in, it makes interpretations that create the experiences we have.  Sometimes our brain gets stuck using it's natural mental filter, focusing only on the negative.  When this happens over and over again, it can cause elevated anxiety, depression, and even isolation.

Today I share with you four tools that can help you overcome that negative mental filter your brain might be in the habit of using.  Remember, you have the power within you to change your focus if you WANT to.  If you aren’t happy with what your focus is creating for you right now, and want to change, then this episode is for you.

We came to this earth not to feel good, but to become good at feeling.

Our earth life experience was designed for us to feel the full spectrum of emotions and learning how to understand and manage our emotions is the foundation for everything we experience in life.

Think about this: There is no possible way to understand true joy and happiness, if we have never experienced sorrow or sadness. We cannot enjoy the feeling of accomplishment if we have never felt some disappointment or failure, we cannot feel courageous if we didn’t feel some fear. This is all part of God’s plan for us. He has made it possible for us to experience oppositionin ALL things, which includes our emotions, in order to truly achieve our divine potential.

I firmly believe that Feeling emotion is a divine attribute of Christ. While He lived on earth, he experienced the full myriad of emotions. . He did not run away from them or fight against them, but he felt them.

It can be scary to think about feeling those emotions that make us feel uncomfortable, but, my friends, it is entirely possible. And I promise, it won't make those unwanted emotions more intense. In fact, when we allow ourselves to really feel them, it will have the opposite effect. That feeling will actually become less and less intense, and diminish all together. This is something that I have taught my clients to do and it has made such a difference in their lives.

Taking time to pause, and allow ourselves to feel the emotions we feel, is one of the best things we can do for ourselves.

My 12- week program is designed to help you pause your anxiety, so that you can catch your breath and enjoy your life again. Check it out here:

How many times do you look at the challenges you are dealing with, whether physical or emotional, as problems? Do these challenges make you feel like apologizing or hiding in shame? Have you ever felt like it was wrong to have the challenges you have?

It can be so easy to look around at others and think there is something wrong with you when they seem to be perfect or have the perfect life. But I want you to know this: There is NOTHING wrong with you! And the challenge you are dealing with does not define who you are.

Today I share an experience I had recently that reminded me of this very thing. It is my goal to help you see the challenge you are dealig with in a different perspective. I firmly believe that instead of looking at our challenges as problems, we can look at them as opportunities.

Here are the questions that I will be asking on this episode to help you gain that different perspective over your challenges. I promise that when you take the time to answer these questions, you will see your challenges in a new light.

  • What if our personal challenges were given to us on purpose?
  • What if God has given us these challenges in order for us to have experiences that will actually benefit us in the long run?
  • What if He knew we were very capable of handling, managing, and maybe even overcoming these things with His help and guidance?
  • How is this challenge refining me?
  • What can I learn or what am I learning from this?
  • How can this be a strength for me, not a weakness?
  • Is it possible this is preparing me for something?
  • And what could that be?
  • How can I use the challenges I have to lift and help others?
  • What if, instead of looking at these experiences and challenges as problems, I view them as opportunities? What would that look like? What would that feel like?

Talking these out with someone can be extremely helpful, so make sure you schedule a call with me soon.

I had the privilege of being interviewed by Heather Rackham, fellow Life Coach and owner of the Latter-Day Saint Life Coach Directory. This episode can also be heard here: https://ldslifecoaches.com/episode/86-acknowledging-the-importance-of-our-emotions-with-angela-adams/

You know I love to discuss emotions and how important acknowledging them and allowing them is to building our emotional strength and well being. Every human being has emotions. They are an integral part of the human experience and yet, we push them away, ignore them, and label them as either “good” or “bad”. But really all that emotions are is a vibration in our body that is produced by a thought. Oftentimes though that vibration can be so intense that we can’t even get to the point of knowing the thought that is causing them.

In this episode, Heather and I talk about that process and really discusses the importance of normalizing each of our emotions so that we can have a better life and use our emotions for our growth and development instead of to our detriment.

Takeaways:

*When you have anxiety it’s important to learn how to manage it, not get rid of it.

*Managing anxiety means we welcome anxiety but we don’t let it into the driverseat of our lives.

*There is a lot of shame with having anxiety because of the meaning we give to anxiety and that there is a problem and there must be something wrong with me since I’m feeling a negative emotion.

*Feeling all the emotions is ok and part of the human experience. It’s the way life is supposed to be.

*While changing our thoughts is needed, we often can’t think clearly when we have so many emotions that are intense and overwhelming. In order to think differently we have to allow for emotions.

*In order to feel emotions, we need to understand what emotions are. Emotions are coming from thoughts that cause a vibration in the body.

*Emotions and motion are related. The word “emotion” has the root of motion and emotions will always move us to do or not do something.

*When we can identify the motion in our bodies produced by emotions, then we can better deal with it and be in control of it instead of it being in control of us. This requires us to drop into our bodies.

*Acknowledging and calling out an emotion – allowing it to be noticed – is the first step of processing an emotion. The second step is allowing room within our bodies and our lives for that emotion to be fully felt.

*In order to better be in touch with our emotions, we have to realize that no emotion is bad and that they are all there for our growth.

*When it comes to emotions like anxiety or depression, there can be genetic components that contribute to them, not just thoughts.

*The Model is a great tool that helps you manage anxiety and become more aware of where the emotion is coming from.

If There is one constant in life,  it’s change.

Life is all about change.  When we left our Heavenly home and came to earth, our spirit gained a physical human body, and  we were veiled from remembering our Heavenly home.  This was our first significant  introduction to an eternal lifetime of changes.

Change can bring up a myriad of feelings for all of us.  For some, change brings a sense of excitement with the anticipation of new beginnings and new adventures.  For others, change brings a lot of fear and worry because of all the uncertainty.  And for some, change can bring up anger.  And if you are like me, you may feel ALL of these feelings.  So what can you do when change comes your way?

In this episode I share a few steps you can take that will help you to understand why change is a very imporotant and necessary part of our earth life experience and steps we can take to understand what we are feeling and ultimately embrace those changes.

If you are going through any type of change in our life and you need help navigating through it, then click the link in below and get onto my calendar.  We can work through it together.

Getting enought sleep is so important to both our physical and our mental health.  But it's interesting to me that during the various stages of our lives, as women, we go through periods of sleep deprivation:  Being a young mom with children that awake in the night, having teen age kids coming in late from activities, and then there’s the onset of menopause and insomnia!  AWWWW.

It seems like no matter what stage of life we are in, sleep deprivation is real so today, let’s talk about what happens to our bodies and our brains when we become sleep deprived, and ways that I have found to handle sleep deprivation.

I will share some simple tools and tips that continue to help me combat sleep deprivation.  If this is something that you are struggling with, then get on my calendar and let's talk!

We all have negative thoughts.  Negative thoughts come because our brains are always scanning for dangerous threats and discomfort.  It wants to protect us and keep us safe.  But people who deal with anxiety or depression tend to have an overabundance of negative thoughts when it comes to themselves, the world, and the future. Thoughts like, “I never do anything right”, “I am always going to fail” “Nothing ever works out for me”, “I am so stupid!”  These thought distortions seem true, and over time, they can become Automatic Negative Thoughts, or ANTs for short.

These ANTS become habit forming thoughts which can actually alter the brain's chemistry, depleting it of the "feel good" neural transmitters of serotonin and dopamine.

But there are ways to retrain your brain and break those thought habits.  On this episode we will discuss the six ways to attack those ANTS.

And, spoiler alert, finding a coach is one of them.  Click on the link below for a free coaching session when you want to break any negative thought habit.

I believe that the majority of people in the world go into marriage with the desire for their marriage to last forever, but sadly, we live in a fallen world, where our agency is constantly tried and tested, and marriages don’t always last as long as originally hoped for.

But there are some that do. Last week I was working with a client who happened to mention that her husband and her were celebrating their 42nd wedding anniversary. 42 years! What a milestone for sure.

We know that from the beginning of time marriage was ordained by God when he created Adam and Eve. In 1 Corinthians 11:11 it states, “…neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.” God never intended for us to be alone.

So today, in honor of my own 35th anniversary, I want to celebrate marriage. Whether you are married or not, in your first marriage or second, or are hoping to one day marry again, the principles that I talk about in this podcast will apply to all.

Now just so we’re clear, my marriage is definitely not perfect. Far from it, in fact. I don’t believe there is any such thing as a perfect marriage. We have made plenty of mistakes over the years, and there has been a lot of trial and error, disagreements, long discussions, hurt feelings, anxieties, apologies, and forgiveness. But today I will share the things we have learned along the way. Some things we learned early on, but most of them have taken years.

If there are principles that I discuss that you would like to dive into further, don't forget to click on the link below for a free coaching session and get on my calendar.

Children worry about so many things. And as they grow, these worries become more than just monsters under the bed or shadows on the walls. As they get older their worries become more about being accepted by their peers, making mistakes, or not meeting their own or their parents expectations.

We live in a very uncertain world, and our children worry about things that we never dreamed of happening when we were their age. And with so much overexposure of information about things happening in the world, through the ever present media, our children’s anxiety can feel really heavy.

So what can we do to help them when this happens? Through my own experience, and through much research, I have compiled the following suggestions that I hope will help you help your child or anyone, really, when they are feeling worried and anxious. In this episode we dive a little deeper into each one.

  • Keep communication lines open by being available for them
  • Stop! Name it. Acknowledge the emotions they are feeling
  • Validate
  • Help them understand what feelings are
  • Help them understand their amazing brains and the power they have over their brains
  • Help them understand how to feel their feelings by getting into their own body
  • Ask them if they know why they are worried or anxious.
  • Don’t shield them from their anxiety!
  • Healthy habits
  • Life is a 50/50 of positive and emotions for a purpose

There is nothing wrong when your child experiences anxiety. Or any negative emotion for that matter. And although it may be difficult for you as their parent to witness this, these tools that I share today will help both you and your child learn how to manage their anxieties and worries. With your help and support, your child will become empowered over his or her emotions.

Disclaimer: If you notice that your child is experiencing more intense anxiety and worry, this could be a sign of a more serious type of anxiety and one that needs to be addressed by a Dr. or Therapist who specializes in Anxiety disorders in children. They will be able to diagnose the specific type of anxiety your child may be dealing with along with more specialized tools and treatments.

We are all created by God and as such have infinite value and worth.  But we also have a human brain that likes to point out all the things that are "wrong" with us,   our weaknesses and struggles,  and creates stories that make us believe that we have less worth and value than others who seem to have it all together.   I beleived this lie for years.

In this episode I will address what happens when we stay in that belief and why I believe  we are given weaknesses.   And then I share the  8 things that I have done( and continue to do)  to better understand my own worth.

Two weeks ago most of our family went on a beach vacation. My husband and I usually go on this vacation by ourselves, bu this year one of our sons and our daughter and her family were able to join us. As I was planning and preparing for our vacation, I started to notice how my brain kept offering me expectations of what I thought would make this vacation perfect for everyone involved. Expectations like

  • I expected that the weather would be warm and sunny and there would be lots of beach to play on
  • I expected that everyone would have a great time
  • I expected that we would all spend most of our time together, etc

Sometimes we create these expectations based on past experiences that produced great memories. We may think that somehow we can control everyone's experience by setting those expectations.

But setting expectations can create problems, the biggest of which can be setting ourselves up for disappointment when our expectations aren't met.
Today I share four advantageous I have discovered when we allow ourselves to stop and drop those expectations that will help us create the experience we want.

It’s natural that we want to be in hurry, because we live in a society where we are we are constantly on the go, always in a hurry. We’ve become used to having things instantly.  .  We have become so used to this way of living that when we have to wait for something, it can be almost painful, right?  Think about how you feel when your internet is running slow.  Do you get as frustrated as I do?

We have become so used to having what we want whenever we want it.  And for some reason we think that we shouldn’t have to struggle with anything for any length of time.  So when we are faced with a situation that we don’t like, one that causes us to struggle, it doesn’t feel good.  And I would venture to say that most of us just want to feel good.  And there is nothing wrong with wanting to feel good.  However, being in a hurry to feel good doesn’t work for the long haul.   In fact,  being in a hurry  only creates more of the negative emotion we want to get rid of.

In this episode we will discuss how this happens, and what we can do about it.  It might even suprise you that in order to feel better, you first have to slow down.   I will teach why this is true and how you can actually get to a place of feeling good again.

When we find ourselves experiencing situations we don’t care for, our brain likes to offer us so many thoughts like:

  • this is not how it is supposed to be
  • it should be different
  • I shouldn’t have to go through this
  • He/she should not act this way
  • I would be so happy if this weren’t happening,
  • This is bad
  • I must have done something wrong for this to be happening

And on and on. And these thoughts create so many negative emotions that, in turn, create  much pain and suffering for ourselves.

Fighting against reality is living in denial.  Thinking that if we deny the truth of what is happening, then it won’t happen.  Maybe we think that when we resist the reality of what we are experiencing, we have power over it.  But just the opposite is true.  In this episode we discuss what we create for ourselves when we fight against reality, and how the power truly comes when we accept what is.
Accepting what is isn't easy and may take time.  Having a coach to help you get to accepting your reality instead of fighting against it is crucial.  Sign up by clicking the link below for a free coaching call with me and let's get you started on your way.

The young adult years can be an exciting time. Experiencing the thrill of independence and embarking on new adventures can be exhilirating. But, like any other transition in life, it can also bring a lot of fear and uncertainty. Over the past several years there has been an increased awareness of anxiety and depression when it comes to young adults. College campuses across the nation have reported a steady increase each year in college students who are experincing both. https://www.stress.org/anxiety-in-college-students-causes-statistics-how-universities-can-help

In today's episode I talk with Caleb Price, the College Coach who just recently graduated from Utah State University. He shares some of the main concerns young adults are facing today, and what we can do to best support them as they navigate through this time in their lives, especially when it coes to dealing with anxiety.

As parents, we may naturally think that we can "fix" the struggles our young adult children face by shielding them from their own struggles, or offering unsolicited advice. Afterall, we've been there before. But Caleb shares that this kind of "help" is quite detrimental and offers the kind of help that is much more beneficial in helping the young adult in our lives navigate this time in their lives.

Our brains love to imagine all the possibilities and try to solve for every problem that may or may not  happen. Our brains like to be efficient, and it thinks that  solving for every problem imaginable beforehand is very efficient and effective.  Sometimes our brains jump immediately to the worst-case scenario and try to solve for that ahead of time, making us believe that if we don't spend time in all the "what if" questions, we won't be prepared.   But this type of catastrophic thinking only causes unneccesary worry and anxiety.

On this episode I will explain what the thought distortion of catastrophizing is, how to recognizie it, and then will offer 4 tips on how to really solve for the worst-case scenario.

We are bombarded daily by all the noise society screams at us, telling us how to attain that “perfect” body;  what to eat and not eat,  how much to eat,  and when.  How to exercise, when to exercise, how much and when.  And if you struggle with perfectionism and anxiety like I do, this noise becomes deafening. And in our desperation, we may even turn to drastic measures in order obtain what society deems is the “perfect” body.    But is there such a thing?  Who defines what a "perfect" body really is.

In today's episode I talk with Clarice Paulson, a Balanced Recovery Coach who helps those recover from eating disorders and disordered eating.  Having gone through her own journey with an eating disorder, she shares with us the tools she uses to help her clients on the road to their own recovery from disordered eating and learning how to love and appreciate their own bodies.

I think it is safe to say that each of us have areas in our lives that are a bit cluttered.  What does this clutter create for you?  For me it is chaos and anxiety.  I feel almost out of control and weighed down.  We live in a society where the belief is that having more "stuff" equals success and happiness.  But is that really true?  What if the opposite were true?

In today's episode I talk with Natalie Moser, a Declutter and Organization coach who will share that having less is truly having more.  Her tools and tips will help you unlock the thoughts that are keeping you from decluttering your life and  create more peace and more time for those things that matter most.

I used to dread Mother’s Day.  Don’t get me wrong.  I love celebrating the mothers in my life. I have an amazing mother who raised her own 7 children, and an equally amazing mother-in-law that raised 8.   But when it came to me, all I could focus on were my inadequacies and imperfections, especially while hearing so many tributes to other, more "perfect" mothers.  Sometimes I even felt guilty that my children had to be stuck with me as their mother.  Surely there was a woman out there who would be a much better mother for them.  And those were the many stories my brain kept offering me because I wanted to be the best mother I could be, and I felt I was falling short.

It took me a while, but now I celebrate being the perfectly imperfect mother I am.

If you find yourself where I was a while back, unable to see the amazing mother you are becoming, and want to change your focus, then this episode is for you.

It's been 9 years since my dad was diagnosed with cancer and 8 years since he passed away. I can still remember when he told me what the Dr. had found. I was in shock. He seemed pretty healthy, and he was so young, just 68 years old at the time. How could this be possible? For several days, even weeks, I was in denial. I just couldn't believe that this was happening to him, or to our family.

Grief is an interesting emotion. We grieve because we have lost something, or someone, that we have valued or loved. We grieve over the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, the loss of a marriage or a relationship, or the loss of our health. We grieve when we face a major change, taking us away from what used to be. We may even grieve over a loved one's struggles or choices.

We will all experience grief during our lifetime. It is part of our human experience. We may feel denial, anger, and sadness as we move through the grieving process. And as we start to accept what has happened and move forward, we may even feel guilty, thinking that we are betraying the memory of what we lost.

During the grieving process, we feel so many emotions. And that is 100% okay. There is no shame or weakness in grieving. It does not mean our faith is weak or there is something wrong with us.

When we do think we are weak, or that we have to "be strong", we end up resisting and avoiding those emotions. But when we do this, the feelings become stronger, and if we are not careful, can overwhelm us.

But when we give ourselves permission to feel all emotions while we grieve without being in a hurry, we will eventually experience peace and acceptance. We will be able to move forward once again. For some this doesn't take long. For others, it will. There's no timetable when it comes to grief. The important thing is to allow it and feel it.

Grief is a process. Don't rush it or resist it. And if this seems difficult, I will help you. Let's work through this together.

My mother has often told me that from the day I was born I was a very independent child and had the attitude “I can do it myself!” Over the years this attitude has stayed with me, and I even married a man with the same independent nature. We tend to be self-reliant, not afraid of tackling most projects ourselves.

But for the longest time I had a problem that I just couldn’t solve myself. I was stuck in the mire of so much blame, resentment, and anger over something that seemed so important at the time, but in hindsight, really wasn’t. This blame, resentment and anger took a heavy toll on me and my relationships. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn’t get rid of these feelings. I tried to ignore them. That didn’t work. I tried resisting them. That didn’t work. And I even tried reacting to them, “letting it all out,” and that didn’t work either. In fact, the feelings of blame, resentment, and anger grew even stronger, causing me to not show up the way I wanted to.

And I was miserable.

This was not how I wanted to feel and behave, and certainly not how God would want me to feel and behave either.

I realized, maybe for the first time, that this was something I couldn’t tackle on my own. I really couldn't do this myself. I needed help. And admitting this was not very easy. But when I allowed myself to accept this, things started to change.

I believe most of us think we can do it ourselves when it comes to making changes in our lives. Sometimes we can, but sometimes we need extra help. And there is nothing wrong with this. In fact, it is all part of God’s plan for us.

On today’s podcast I share my own journey of seeking the help I needed to get out of the mire of blame, resentment, and anger and the peace and joy that came as a result.

If you find yourself experiencing something that you want to change in your own life, then come to a free coaching session with me and let’s talk about it. Wouldn’t you rather feel peace and joy, than be stuck in the mire?

Whenever you recieve a compliment or experience something positive in your life, how do you usually respond? For years, I would automatically discount the compliment or positive experience because I had this belief that it coulnd't be true, or that it was just a fluke.  Discounting the positive is another sneaky thought distortion that many people experience, sometimes without even realizing it.  Today I will share what this looks like,  where it comes from, and 8 tips to get you started in breaking this thought habit once and for all.

People who deal with anxiety, overwhelm, perfectionism, and even depression often spend time in what has been called distorted thinking: thoughts that our brain has twisted in our mind that we believe are true. One of these types of thought distortions is "All or Nothing Thinking".

All or nothing thinking is often called black and white thinking, thinking in absolutes. It is all one way or the other. There is no gray in between. And in negative situations, sometimes these thoughts have become automatic, meaning that your brain automatically goes right into this type of thinking. You can recognize all or nothing thinking when the words "always", "never", and "ever" are in your constant vocabulary.

In today's episode I will explain this type of thought distortion and what it looks like and then I will share four tips on how to overcome "all or nothing" thinking. For your reference I am including these tips here.

  1. When a negative situation comes up, write down the thoughts that automatically come and identify the "all or nothing" thoughts
  2. Challenge those thoughts and flip them around using the following questionsa. Is this thought 100% true?
    b. What else could be true?
    c. How do these thoughts make me feel?
    d. Is this thought something the Lord would want me to think or feel?
    e. Is this thought helping me or hurting me?
    f. What do I know about myself that tells me this is not true?
    g. What would I say to someone I was close with if they had this same thought?
  3. Focus on your strengths and not your weakness, understanding there will be setbacks, but not make them meand anything negative about yourself
  4. Give yourself grace and compassion while practice changing the "all or nothing" thought habit

When things happen in our lives or situations come up,  sometimes we  interpret them to be a problem and this causes us the feel something.  We might feel confused, perplexed, frustrated, discouraged, disappointed, sad, etc.  And between the situation and what we feel, there is space, the space in between.

Many times we aren't even aware of what we are filling that space with, or why we feel the way we do.  For years I had no idea myself.  It was with the help of a coach that I was able to realize that I was filling much of that space in between with negative thought habits, thoughts I subconciously practiced over and over again.

In today's episode we will discuss what the space in between is,  how we fill that space, and then I will give you three tips about how to get you started on breaking negative thought habits.   This episode is short and sweet and straight to the point.  You won't want to miss it.

Four years ago I found a coach, and from that moment the transformation began. No longer did I believe that living with anxiety would keep me from progressing and becoming the person I am meant to become. There is so much more to me than my anxiety, and my coach showed me that we all have limitless possibilities to grow and progress and create the life we want. It's truly within each of us. I needed a coach to help me see it for myself.

Coaching has truly changed my life. So much so that I want to shout it from the rooftops and share it with everyone I know! But rather than getting on top of my roof everyday, I decided to become a Life Coach instead, with my mission to help you realize what I did four years ago.

I have had the privilege to train with Molly Claire, Certified Master Coach and instructor, as well as be part of her Business Coaching program, The Coaching Collective. She is an amazing coach.

I have invited Molly to join me in discussing how Life Coaching can transform your life. She will share her own journey with Life Coaching and then we will discuss a Life Coach's role and how everyone (yes, everyone) can benefit from having a coach. We will also explore how, as members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, we both have witnessed how the remarkable tools from coaching go hand in hand with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Her enthusiasm and passion for what she does truly emanates from her. Whether you are needing help in managing your own anxiety, or buiding a business, we both agree that having a life coach is so empowering and makes everything in life better.

You won't want to miss this episode!

We live in an “I want it now” world.    Instant gratification is quite accessible, and as a society we have become quite accustomed to it.  When we are told to wait, notice the thoughts and feelings that come up for you.  Think about when you turn on your computer and for some reason it takes more than 10 seconds to boot up.  Or when we are searching for something on the internet and it takes more than a few seconds to connect us to the site we want.  Waiting is not the norm for us.  Instant gratification means we get to feel good instantly, and feeling good is what we want, right?

Waiting requires time, patience, effort, and faith.  But think about the feelings we experience when we finally get what we have waited for.  Those are the feelings that truly change us, and last.

For years I have struggled with the "I want it now" thought, and it created a lot of frustration and pain for me when I didn't get what I wanted in the time I wanted.  Two weeks ago I had an experience that opened my eyes to the deeper feeings, gifts,  and wisdom that I have received when I had to wait, and I want to share this with you today.

Don't forget to get on my calendar for a FREE coaching session today.  We can talk about your struggle with wanting something now but having to wait.

The "I don’t know how" lie is one of many stories that our brains like to offer us when we are facing a new opportunity or challenge because it just wants to protect us from feeling fear, inadequate, and discomfort.   When we hold tightly to that story, we simply stay stuck.  We simply don’t progress.  In a very real way we simply give up on ourselves and our potential.

Think about what this world would have been like if certain people stayed stuck in the "I don't know how lie":  Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington,  Mother Theresa,  Moses, and so many more.

In today's episode I share some tips on how to loosen your grip on fear, inadequacy, and discomfort, while moving from the "I don't know how lie" into the confidence of  "I can figure this out."

When was the last time you laughed, I mean really laughed? How do you feel being around people who help you laugh?

It's been said that laughter is the best medicine, and I believe that is true, especially in times of stress. Laughter has the power to:

  • Ease the tension and stress in any situation
  • Show us another perspective
  • Allows us to view ourselves in a more positive light
  • Keep us from taking things so seriously
  • Strengthen us physically and mentally
  • Heal

I am sure we can all think of a time when laughter brought relief during a stressful situation, and as we explore each of these areas, I will share stories, and examples that illustrate this further. I will also share tips on how you can develop more laughter in your life, because, as Marjorie Pay Hinckley once said, "The only way to get through life is to laugh your way through it."

What comes up for you when you hear the word perfectionism? Is it a word that you can identify with at some level?

Maybe you have had thoughts like,

“This project I am working on isn’t good enough. Look at all those mistakes and flaws! It has to be perfect before I can finish it."

"I am afraid to try that thing because I don’t know if I am going to be any good at it, and I don’t want to look like a fool!"

" What will other people think of me? "

" Am I ever going to be good enough?"

If any of these sound familiar to you, then you may have some perfectionism thinking going on.  Today we are going to discuss what perfectionism is and what it looks like, the difference between perfectionism vs. doing your best, and tips that I have found helpful for me in working on overcoming the distorted thoughts of perfectionism.
If this sounds like something you are struggling with, then you've come to the right place.  You won't want to miss this epsidoe.

For years I longed for someone who would listen to me and really understand the challenges I was having with anxiety, overwhelm, and self-doubt.  Someone who knew what it felt like to worry constantly, spin in circles, and not be able to make even the simplist decisions.  Someone who would hear me and not make me feel like I was a crazy person.  I wanted relief from the control these emotions had on me.

During my own journey I found that there are so many solutions and answers, and I have learned about and applied many of them.  Coaching has been a good addition and has helped me to really understand the anxiety, overwhelm, and self-doubt I was feeling.  For once I was able to accept it, without beating myself up over it.  I have learned the skills to manage not only these emotions, but other uncomfortable emotions that come up.  I have learned to accept myself, love myself, embracing every part of me,  challenges and all.

In this episode I share with you the three reasons why you will want to work with me.  Then I will walk you through step by step how to sign up for a FREE coaching session with me to see if we are a good fit.  At the end I will share what a few of my clients have had to say about working with me.

When it comes to intentional thinking,  it reinforces the idea that all people are free to act and not be acted upon.  When we find ourselves in certain situations, our default reactive or unintentional thinking  may kick in.  Why does this happen?  Because we all have a human brain!  And with that reactive, unintentional thinking, we usually don't create the best results for ourselves; we don't usually show up the way we want to.  But how do we change that?  With our intentional thoughts!  We are free to act, to choose intentional thoughts in order to become who we want to become, create the experiences in our life that we want.  With the desire, awareness, and some effort it is possible.

In this short, but sweet episode, I will share some of my own experiences to illustrate this.  You may not realize what your unintentional thoughts are creating for you.  And that is where I can help you figure it out.  Sign up for a FREE coaching session with me.  What have you got to lose?https://coachwithangela.as.me/

Today we will talk about the feeling of Overwhelm. I think it is a fair thing to say that we have all experienced this feeling at times. The feeling you get when you think that there is too much to do and not enough time to do it all. Where you feel like you are constantly running faster and faster to finish, but there is always more to do. Does this sound familar? We are going to discuss where this overwhelm may be coming from and what reacting to it might look like for you. Then I will give you some tools that will help you start to unlock your own feelings of overwhelm. This is one of the areas that I coach with my clients on regularly.

I will be asking a lot of questions for you to think about. I find it helpful to write my answers down where I can really look at what is happening in my brain. Since it isn't very practical to pause the podcast in order to write your answer, I have included the questions here in the show notes for you. If you are feeling stuck in the feeling of overwhelm, I can help. I have open slots in my calendar next week specifically for those of you who are feeling overwhelmed. Follow the link below and set up a Free coaching session with me. We can take a look at the specific area in your life that is causing the most overwhelm for you and work on it together to help you to understand where it is coming from and how you can feel unstuck.

As our lives move faster and faster, making the time to be still  is vital to our mental, emotional, and spiritual health and well being.  There is such power in allowing oursleves to be still, even for a few minutes each day.  But if you're like me,  making time isn't always easy, and, you may have a lot of reasons that you think are valid, preventing you from this daily practice.

In this episode I will share four powerful benefits we receive from being still:

  1. The  Feeling of Calm
  2. Guidance and Focus
  3. Understanding the truth about ourselves
  4. Unlocking Our Own Creativity

2021 was a year for the books.   I heard so many say they couldn't wait to get this year over with, hoping for a better year ahead.  And sometimes I found myself wishing for the same thing.  But then I was able to sit down and really reflect on what 2021 has taught me.  In looking back, I have realized that 2021 had a lot to offer, and so in this episode I will several things that I learned, came to appreciate, and the three things that have had the most impact on me personally:

  1. Choosing how I want to think and feel about the situations in my life and the world
  2. Understanding that I am a creator:  of my life, my relationships, my business
  3. I can honor other's agency, with love and compassion

I am excited for the new year ahead and look forward to building on the three things that have made such an impact in my life.  What is it you are looking forward to in 2022?

This new year has started out completely different than I had anticipated.  Two days ago I had had to make a conscious decision about what kind of experience I wanted to create for myself when plans suddenly changed for several members of my family.   It's been a crazy few days around here!
I have learned, once again, that when situations in life happen beyond our control, we have the ability to create any experience we want.  That is the only thing we can control.

How often do you find yourself jumping to conclusions?  Making assumptions, even negative assumptions about a given situation?  We assume that the story we tell ourselves is absolutely true because we think we know.  But these are just stories we create, and most often these stories create a lot of drama and pain. Dr. David Burns, M.D, offers that jumping to conclusions is one of ten cognitive distortions that our brain tends to entertain, especially when we are feeling anxious, overwhelmed and down.  Today we are going explore why we, as human beings,  tend to jump to conclusions, assuming the worst,  what it creates for us, and then  I will teach you how to become an investigator of the stories you create in order to uncover the truth.   You won't want to miss this!

Thirty years ago my world changed quite dramatically.  I was a 23 year old mom with three small children under the age of 3 (a toddler and identical twin boys).  To say I was overwhelmed and exhausted would be an understatement!  Now, at the age of 53, I have often wondered what I would want to share with that younger version of me.  What wisdom would I want to give her?  What would I want her to know?

Imagine if you had the opportunity to sit down with your younger self right now.  Where would you be?  What would you be doing?  What wisdom would you want to share with her?  What would you want her to know?

Today I will share with you the ten things I would want my younger self to know, the things I have learned through the years that may help you see yourself and your life a little differently.

“I Should…”

What feelings come up for you when you think this thought?

On the surface thinking “I should   ”  seem harmless, even useful.  But the truth is, for some people it is a sneaky triggering thought that only pretends to be helpful and can pack quite a punch.

For me, thinking “I should…”,triggers feelings of guilt, anxiety, shame, self-criticism, comparison, and judgment.  I mistakenly think this little thought will motivate me into doing something.  But the reality is, it doesn’t, and sometimes thinking “I should…” prevents me from getting anything done.

In today's episode,  we are going to examine this word, “Should”, and look at the various meanings we give to it. We will discuss why it can create anxious feelings, and then I will give you four tools that will help you look at this triggering word differently.  You won’t want to miss it!

Showing compassion for others may not seem very hard.  But showing compassion for ourselves?  That's a different story.  When you don't show up the way you want to, or when you make mistakes, how do you treat yourself?  Maybe it looks like judgement and criticism.  For years, that is exactly what it looked like for me, and, if I am being totally honest, sometimes it still does.  But what would love and compassion look like instead?   Have you ever thought about that?

During our lives, we will face challenging circumstances, or trials.  We know that this is all part of our mortal experience, but it doesn't make them any less painful.   In today's episode I will share how those closest to me have held onto faith to carry them through.  We will disucss what faith is, and how, using bridge thoughts, we can develop that same faith in order to navigate through our own struggles and challenges.

Several years ago, as I was going through my own trial with GAD, I heard a song that resonated with me.  It is sung by Hillary Weeks, and I have included the link here. Music has always been an important part of my life and has a way of speaking to me better than anything else.  This song is a great reminder that through Faith in Christ, we can feel peace, and grow despite the trials we face.

No matter what the event, I like to have a plan.  It's not that I am in love with planning, but having a plan in place gives me peace of mind and keeps anxiety at bay.  I have always believed that when you are prepared you will not fear or panic.  My brain loves to spend a lot of energy and time trying to plan for EVERY possible thing that could go wrong.  That's what brains do.  They try to keep us "safe", and safe for me feels like making sure I have covered all the possibilities.

But here's the deal.  There is no possible way that your brain will KNOW everything, and sometimes you will find  yourself facing something that just wasn't in the plan.  So what do you do?  In this episode I will share my recent experience with this very thing and what I learned from it.  I will also share three tips on what you can do to keep things in perspective when things don't go according to plan, one of which came from a recent speech given by Rebecca Craven to the students at BYU.  Here is the link to that speech: https://speeches.byu.edu/speakers/rebecca-l-craven/

For as long as I can remember, anxiety has always been a constant companion of mine.    We hear this word everywhere, and some have even described it as the new “buzzword”.  Perhaps meaning that this word is used to describe all the emotions we feel, or, emotions we don’t want to feel.
The word anxiety has become almost an everyday term over the last two years. So, in a sense, it has become a new buzzword.  But chronic anxiety is real. I know because I have an ongoing struggle with General Anxiety Disorder.

In today's episode I share my own journey with GAD, and how I thought that anxiety defined me.  I felt hopeless, like I was doing something wrong.  There were days when I felt like I was barely hanging on.  It took over 20 years, of praying, researching, and trying everything I could, to finally seek professional help.  I was so relieved to finally discover that my anxiety had a name.   Over the years I have continued to learn and  use all the tools available to me to manage my anxiety.  When I found Life Coaching, I felt as though my toolbox is complete.  I no longer feel like my anxiety manages me. I manage it!  I have included a link to one of my favorite tools I use to manage anxiety.  It works!  And I want to share it with you.  You're welcome in advance.

Isn't it fascinating to watch little children as they explore the world around them?  Their natural curiosity helps them to understand the world around them.  They always want to know "why"?  All too often I found myself, as a young mom, not taking the time to really answer my children's "whys", especially when they went on and on and on with the never ending "why"?

In this episode we will discuss  the three reasons why taking the time to be curious is so important and so powerful.  I will share what I have discovered with you when I take the time to really get curious about what I am feeling and thinking.   There is so much to discover, my friend!

So many times I just want to "fix" the challenges or problems of those I love.  It's hard to see them struggle!  So many times I just wish I can take those struggles or challenges away and make them feel better.  Even though I know that I can't do any of this, I discovered something even more.  I discovered that deep down the reason I want to fix their challenges is not just to make them feel better, but because I  want to feel better.

In this episode we will explore the reasons we may want to "fix" the challenges that others are going through, why it isn't possible, and what we can do instead.

When we stay focused  on what we have done or haven't done in our past, it will keep us stuck, preventing us from moving forward and reaching our potential, even our Divine potential.  We may have thoughts like, "this is how I have always been, I can't change", "I don't know how to do something new".  When we choose to keep these thoughts, we end up going around and around in circles.  We may feel like we are moving, but  we really aren't.  In order to reach our full potential, our Divine potential, we recognize that these past focused thoughts are just thoughts.  Moving toward our Divine potential is possible, even if making changes in our lives seems a bit scary.

Receiving recognition for something we do feels great.  Our world thrives on external validation.  We see it everywhere: the workplace, on social media, in our schools, on TV.  Where we get in trouble is when we rely  on external validation to feel valued or worthy.  Our worth has nothing to do with external accolades or recognition.  In this episode I will share my own struggle with having my self worth tied to external validation, and the things that we all can do to build a strong belief in our own value and create our own internal validation.

We have instructional manuals for so many things in our lives, from cars, to appliances, and even at work there are instructional manuals and expectations.  Although we might not realize it, we even have "manuals" or expectations for the people in our lives.  These expectations, or "manuals" usually cause us to feel frustrated because when the people in our lives don't meet our expectations, or "work" how we think they should, we make it mean something about us, which in turn, makes us unhappy or feel badly.  In today's episode we will discuss what these "manuals" look like, how they make us feel, and how much more empowering it is when you throw away those manuals all together.
