In this episode, meet Jenn Trepeck, an optimal health coach, podcaster, and business consultant who aims to educate people on the importance of nutrition. During the interview, we dive deep into epigenetics, how our lifestyle choices influence gene expression and the importance of making small daily choices to improve our health. Jenn emphasizes how young people often focus on aesthetics rather than health, but early attention to health can have significant long-term benefits.

She also explores the importance of habit-building and focusing on one task at a time to make lasting progress. Jenn discusses the connection between epigenetics and metabolism, emphasizing that quality nutrition creates optimal health-supporting genes, while obesity and lack of nutrition create a less health-supporting environment.

And so began her weight management saga. Ultimately though, Jenn learned the nutrition education we’re all supposed to know, but no one ever taught us. This completely changed her life and allowed her to say she “kicked her food issues.” From then, Jenn set out on a mission to pay it forward and help people help themselves. After over a decade of working with clients, Jenn started Salad with a Side of Fries podcast. Based on science, yet lighthearted, Jenn talks about living life while still making ourselves and our health a priority.

This episode features Hannah Went, of TruDiagnostic. She discussed the topic of epigenetics, a field of biology that examines markers above the genetic sequence and is modifiable by environmental influences and human intervention. Hannah talked about the role that genetics and epigenetics play in diseases like diabetes and how modifying one's lifestyle might reduce the possibility of developing these illnesses.

Hannah and I talk about the importance of preventative healthcare and biological age during the interview. Given that aging is the leading risk factor for chronic illnesses and death, she highlights the need of knowing one's biological age. She notes that biological age is reversible and changeable through lifestyle factors that can reduce stress and encourage healthy living.

Whether it's speaking, writing books, raising a family of five young children, building businesses, or growth coaching, Julia Gentry has dedicated her life to waking up dreamers everywhere and she’s inviting people into an opportunity to change the conversation to one that REALLY matters.

By the age of twenty-three, Julia built a successful company in real estate that bought and sold millions of dollars worth of investment property only to end up $100,000 in debt. She then rebuilt her career as a business coach, advising hundreds of entrepreneurs on how to build a successful business. She bought a house and nice cars, had a few babies, and obtained “the American dream” only to realize it wasn’t her dream. Every night as she crawled into bed, she had this nagging question in the back of her mind: IS THERE SOMETHING MORE?

Thankfully, she identified the answer to that question (YES), and it has become a “wake-up call” that the people of the world didn’t know they always needed! As a dreamer, Best Selling author of DREAM-I Dare You, business owner, and founder of The Dream Factory and Co., she provides a fresh, bold approach to creating greater alignment in life and encourages a more awakened way to live.

She is on a mission to create a massive wake-up call that ignites people to be the light in the dark, the salt of the earth, and to be bold as lions in their faith, family, career, and community. With her truth-speaking, matter-of-fact, crazy practical approach, she just has an uncanny, one-of-a-kind way of moving people forward. She claims her failures are just as epic (if not more so) as her successes and without shame shares it all.

Dr. Mary Wendel opened her first practice dedicated to treating women experiencing hair loss in 2002, when she opened the Women’s Hair Loss Center in Worcester, MA. Meeting with and treating hundreds of women over the years, she has witnessed first-hand not only the physical, but emotional toll of hair loss, and the impact on her patients’ confidence and self-esteem. She became intensely interested and passionate about discovering and offering effective treatments to slow or stop hair loss and even regrow hair. Eventually, her own thinning hair created an even deeper understanding and empathy of the hair loss and restoration issues unique to women. In June 2015, Dr. Wendel opened the first Medi Tresse medical clinic in Wellesley, MA, offering non-surgical hair loss solutions exclusively for women. Since 2015, Medi Tresse has grown to 4 locations and has seen over 3000 patients in their offices.

Dr. Wendel, who is board certified in internal medicine, received her MD from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1980 and completed her internship and residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester studying internal medicine. Dr. Wendel worked as an emergency room staff physician, urgent care physician and primary care physician at Fallon Clinic in Worcester and as an internist and primary care physician at UMass Memorial Healthcare. Dr. Wendel helped manage the clinical practice of DiStefano Hair Restoration Center, while also evaluating and creating treatment plans for female and male patients. Dr. Wendel’s additional clinical interest areas are in preventative health, including diet, exercise, and spiritual well-being. Dr. Wendel was raised in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, and resides in Sudbury, MA, with her husband, Dr. Mark DiStefano.

In This Episode

In this episode, we are joined by Theresa Forton Barnes, a holistic health practitioner and expert in environmental toxins. Theresa shares her knowledge and expertise on how everyday toxins can impact your health, and why it's crucial to be aware and cautious of the chemicals that we allow into our homes and bodies.

  • Household toxins can be found in cleaning supplies, laundry detergents, and other products used for cleaning. These toxins can be harmful and contribute to poor indoor air quality, which can be up to two to five times more polluted than outdoor air.
  • To improve indoor air quality and reduce exposure to toxins, it's important to read labels and choose natural or non-toxic products for cleaning and other household needs.
  • Many companies use buzzwords like "natural" and "organic" to make their products seem healthier than they really are. Additionally, the word "fragrance" can be a red flag, as it is a catch-all term that can conceal potentially harmful chemicals.
  • There are many chemicals in everyday products that we come into contact with regularly, and the long-term effects of these chemicals on our health are not well understood. While some chemicals have been linked to cancer and other health issues, there are thousands of chemicals that have not been fully studied.
  • Everyday items, such as dry cleaning, new furniture, and plastic, can contain toxins that are harmful to our health. It's important to be mindful of what we bring into our homes and to take steps to reduce exposure to these toxins.
  • Simple actions, such as opening windows, cleaning fans, and using air purifiers, can help improve air quality in our homes and promote better health.
  • Toxic chemicals found in everyday household items and personal care products can have a negative impact on our health, particularly in relation to hormone levels and the endocrine system.
  • It's important to look at the root cause of any health issues we're experiencing and to consider the environment as a possible factor. While doctors are important and necessary, they may not always focus on the root cause of a problem.
  • Eliminating toxic chemicals from your home can be overwhelming, but it's important to start somewhere and take it slow. You can start by eliminating the big offenders like candles and store-bought sprays.
  • You can also look into making your own cleaning products using simple, natural ingredients like vinegar and essential oils. Start with one area at a time, such as laundry detergent or cleaning supplies, and gradually work your way through your home.
  • Many natural alternatives exist that are cheaper and healthier than their chemical counterparts, such as coconut oil for skin lotion.
  • Getting enough sleep is crucial for maintaining good health, and it's important to listen to your body's needs. Therese meditates and stays in bed for an extra hour after waking up early, and recommends creating a dedicated space for foot elevation to promote wellness in a workplace.

In This Episode

In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Andrea Perez, a board-certified family physician with 20 years of experience. We delve into how movement during midlife can help you age gracefully and the importance of being your own health advocate. Dr. Perez shares her insights on the power of mindset and energy in managing illnesses, and how our beliefs and attitudes can influence our physical health and well-being.

  • Getting to the root cause of a health issue is important and should be a collaborative effort between the patient and their doctor. Patients should be in tune with their own bodies and be willing to speak up when something doesn't feel right.
  • Getting to the root cause of an illness or condition is not just the responsibility of the healthcare provider but also of the patient. It's important for the patient to be honest and open with their healthcare provider and work collaboratively with them to find the best solution.
  • It's important to be cautious when using online resources like WebMD to diagnose health issues. While they can be helpful, they may also provide inaccurate or overwhelming information. Consulting with a trusted healthcare provider is the best way to get accurate and personalized healthcare advice.
  • Patients can build confidence and be better prepared to ask the right questions by coming to their appointments with as much data as possible about their condition. This includes being aware of symptoms, triggers, and other relevant information that can help their healthcare provider diagnose and treat them more effectively.
  • Journaling and documenting your symptoms can help doctors make a correct diagnosis and address underlying issues that may not be immediately apparent.
  • Addressing your beliefs around illness and healing is important in the healing process, as negative beliefs can hinder progress. It's important to separate oneself from the condition and explore the root of negative beliefs to promote healing.
  • Mindset plays a significant role in managing conditions, including chronic diseases like cancer. By removing ourselves from the condition and not intertwining our ego, personality, or self-worth into it, we can empower ourselves to create a better life and a better condition.
  • The energy we bring can either nourish or starve the disease. It's important to choose a path that empowers us to create a better life for ourselves and not let the disease define our story.
  • The power of our mindset and thoughts can influence our physical health and well-being. While it's important to take necessary precautions to protect ourselves from illnesses, we can also use our mindset to change the story and feel better for a longer period of time.
  • Our society has an inherent badge of honor for going non-stop, but it's important to incorporate stillness and rest into our lives to increase our parasympathetics and honor the cycles of our bodies.
  • Regular movement, even in small amounts, is important for maintaining muscle mass, increasing range of motion, and keeping ligaments and tendons flexible. It doesn't have to be intense exercise like running a marathon, but can include meditative walking, or simply parking farther away and walking more. As we age, it's important to maintain muscle and joint strength to help with daily activities like getting up from a chair.
  • Menopause and perimenopause can be a beautiful time for women, as it allows them to reflect on their strength and resilience, and to come into their own knowingness without the perceived pressure of youth and beauty. It is also a time to prioritize self-care and engage in activities such as meditation, stillness, rest, movement, and getting out in nature, which can be impactful for our overall health and wellbeing.
  • Recognize the wisdom that can come from unexpected sources, such as our children. It's essential to listen to them and learn from them, as they can be our perfect teachers.
  • Take time to connect with ourselves, to light our inner flame and awaken our passions. We must trust that we are enough and bring our unique experiences and wisdom to the table to pursue our dreams and not put them aside for the sake of others or society's expectations.

In this episode, I'll be sharing my personal journey of dealing with a health crisis and how that experience has inspired me to empower and support women going through menopause. As a solo episode, it's just you and me today, but I'm excited to share my story and offer tips on how to use podcasting as a platform for change.

Key Takeaways

  • Mental health issues such as anxiety can have a significant impact on an individual's ability to carry out daily activities, and may require support from loved ones.
  • It can be difficult for individuals to accept help from loved ones and may lead to feelings of shame or embarrassment.
  • Health problems cause one to be disempowered, afraid, and angry at oneself.
  • Unhealthy habits, including overeating and not managing stress effectively, contributes to developing health problems that can in effect cause feelings of regret and frustration later on.
  • After experiencing a variety of physical and emotional symptoms for a long time and spending a significant amount of money seeking medical help, I realized that my problems were related to my diet and stress levels.
  • After successfully recovering from health issues, I decided to share my story and help other women who may be experiencing similar symptoms by becoming certified in health and wellness and creating resources to support them.
  • As we age, the food we eat plays a bigger role in our health than we may imagine. Menopause brings physical changes like weight gain and wrinkles, but also internal changes that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis.
  • Taking care of our bodies through proper nutrition, hydration, exercise, and stress management can help prevent and reverse many health issues associated with aging and menopause, and improve our overall well-being.
  • Finding joy and purpose in life, outside of work and other stressors, can also contribute to improved mental and physical health.
  • The Mastering Menopause course can help women understand their body, lean into aging, and learn how to eat for their body. The course empowers women to advocate for themselves when they see their physicians and reframe the male-coined term "menopause" into something positive.
  • The community built around Mastering Menopause is designed to empower women who are new to this way of thinking and those who need a reminder of how awesome they are.
  • Menopause is not the end, but the beginning of a new phase in life. It offers freedom and wisdom to make decisions that serve oneself and those around them. The "Grandmother Hypothesis" highlights the importance of elders in the rearing of future generations and the place of mature people in society.
  • Understanding the root cause of your eating habits is key to making a mindset shift and healing your hormones during menopause. Once you identify the barriers holding you back from eating for your body, you can begin to operate at a higher level and wear the term "menopausal" as a badge of honor.
  • At the end of the day, my motivation for creating the podcast and the course is not about downloads or revenue, but about reaching as many women as possible to help them live empowered, healthy lives.

Key Takeaways

  • In midlife, it can be challenging for women to make space for themselves and their self-care. Women often find their identities tied up with others, so finding time for themselves can seem selfish. They may also feel overwhelmed by the demands of their jobs and families.
  • Instead of telling stories and passing on information to our daughters and our granddaughters and our sisters, we hold it back. We hold back the unpleasant stories—such as those on menopause—about what it's like to be a woman in this world.
  • Midlife alchemy involves transforming something ordinary into something magical and empowering.
  • During midlife, individuals may feel stuck in a rut and experience a sense of emptiness or lack of purpose. This feeling can be due to hormonal changes associated with perimenopause and menopause. However, we can see this as an opportunity to reinvent oneself and create a more fulfilling life by embracing the changes and stepping into one's own power—hence the term “midlife alchemy”.
  • The idea of empowering women to choose their own path in life instead of being tied to traditional roles ended up becoming overwhelming. Women were told to do everything and lacked mentors to guide them, especially those who came of age in the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s.
  • Research shows that most men still want women to fulfill traditional roles of taking care of the home and family, while also working outside the home. This pressure to have it all, combined with consumerist culture and social expectations, causes women's wellbeing and self-care to suffer as they try to fulfill all these obligations.
  • On the other hand, men also struggled with the rapid changes in gender roles and traditional family dynamics. They were used to having their mothers take care of the home. There was also the lack of conversation between fathers and sons about these role changes.
  • During midlife, women gain wisdom and experience stirrings in their soul, where they feel that there is more to them than what they have accomplished. They realize they have more time behind them than ahead and start thinking about their legacy.
  • The concept of self-care is viewed differently by women, with some believing it to be superficial like getting their nails done, while others consider it to be seeking mental health professionals and physical checkups. The problem is that everyone has a different understanding of what self-care means.
  • Self-care shaming occurs on both sides, with some feeling shame for their self-care choices and others shaming those who do not prioritize self-care. This creates a culture of shame surrounding self-care, which can undo the positive effects of taking care of oneself.
  • To figure out who they are now, women need to let go of social expectations that weigh them down and reflect on their beliefs and thoughts. Beliefs that have been passed down through culture, family, and social programming can be deeply ingrained, and it's important to test them to see if they still hold true. Women should focus on what they truly want and figure out their own desires and priorities.
  • Dr. Petty encourages women to get out of their heads and back into their bodies to listen to their heart and gut, which are powerful tools that help them make decisions from a place of empowered feminine wisdom and energy.
  • When someone pushes back against your growth, it's not about you, but rather their fear of being left behind. Have conversations with family members who may resist your personal growth and changes. These conversations with loved ones should be upfront with the goal of determining your non-negotiables while also being open to compromise.
  • Midlife women should share stories with their daughters, granddaughters, nieces, and young cousins about the importance of having clear communication and practical discussions about responsibilities in relationships. They should encourage young people, both men and women, to have these conversations before making a commitment to avoid conflicts in the future.
  • Empower yourself by seeking information and resources to achieve your goals. Don't see yourself as a victim and don't give away your power, but ask for help when needed.

Today we're talking all about gut health and how to improve it in midlife. We're joined by Donna Monthei, a gut health nutrition coach. We talk about what causes gut issues, how to know whether gut problems cause your symptoms, and how to take care of your gut for optimal overall health.

  • The gut is a crucial part of our health. It aids in the digestion and absorption of the foods that we eat, which allows us to get the nutrients we need from our food.
  • Your gut is the center of your body's health, and an imbalance in your gut can affect every system in your body. From your brain to your mood and hormones, vitamins, and even your immune system, nothing is safe from the impact that an unhealthy gut can have on you.
  • The gut and the brain are connected through a two-way superhighway of communication between our central nervous system and digestive system. This connection is called the gut-brain axis, and it's critical for optimal health.
  • H. pylori can affect mood. The bacteria causes inflammation in the stomach, which can lead to depression and anxiety.
  • Gut microbiome testing is a way to analyze the bacteria, parasites, and fungus in your gut. This can help you determine whether these organisms are causing you any symptoms.
  • Stress can alter the gut microbiome, which can lead to gastrointestinal issues and other health problems. This is because stress causes changes in the body's hormone production and immune response.
  • A low-fiber, high-sugar diet has been shown to reduce the diversity of gut bacteria. This can lead to a less diverse, more harmful gut microbiome.
  • Certain medications can also alter our gut. Some of these medications include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and proton pump inhibitors.
  • Alcohol, in any amount, is bad for our gut.
But if you're going to drink alcohol, opt for red wine—it contains polyphenols and antioxidants that are good for our gut bacteria.
  • The Bristol Stool Chart is a useful indicator of what's going on in your body. It can help you talk to your doctor about your stool, and it can also be used as a reference when you're trying to determine why your bowel movements have changed over time.
  • Your gut microbiome affects your weight. Children may have it better, but as we age, our gut microbiomes change in ways that make us more vulnerable to weight gain.
  • Digestive enzymes and probiotics may be helpful in managing gut issues. Digestive enzymes help break down food and absorb nutrients, while probiotics are beneficial bacteria that help support the health of your digestive system.
  • Eating fiber is important for the health of our gut's good bacteria. It helps them grow and flourish, which in turn helps us digest food and absorb nutrients.

This week, we're talking about how nutrition impacts your kidneys. Our guest is dietitian Jen Hernandez, who will tell us about her experience working with CKD patients, what a renal diet is, and how you can make healthy choices that support your kidney health.

  • Kidney disease is a silent killer. Many people don't realize that they have kidney disease until it's too late because there are no symptoms until the kidneys fail completely.
  • Our kidneys do so many things apart from being the filtration system of our body. They also help manage electrolytes, produce red blood cells, keep our bones healthy, balance our pH, and regulate our blood pressure control.
  • Early-stage kidney disease doesn't show many signs, but it's important to be aware of the potential symptoms. Some potential signs of kidney disease include a lower energy level, changes in blood pressure, nausea, and fatigue.
  • Some people with kidney disease experience either decreased or increased urination. This can be caused by the fact that the kidneys are not filtering properly.
  • Chronic Kidney Disease or CKD has no roadmap or set timeline. It is incredibly individual for every person, and the condition can progress at different rates depending on the individual.
  • End-stage kidney disease is a condition in which the kidneys have ceased to function. Patients with this condition must receive dialysis, which involves replacing the functions of their kidneys.
  • In the past, patients had to go to a clinic for dialysis treatments. However, this is changing as more patients opt for home-based dialysis. Home-based dialysis allows them to stay at home and still receive treatment from a medical professional.
  • Chronic Kidney Disease is a lifelong condition that can progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). It is not something you can cure completely; you can only manage it.
  • CKD is categorized based on a glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which is a measure of how much toxin is filtered through the kidneys.
  • Early detection of CKD is a crucial opportunity to prevent the progression of the disease and improve patient outcomes.
  • The old renal diet was harsh, requiring patients to consume only specific types of food. This meant that they were limited to bland and unappetizing meals.
  • Make sure to check that your handouts from clinics are up-to-date. Research is constantly evolving, and it's important to stay on top of the latest developments.
  • Be your own advocate. Whether you think you are healthy or suspect that you have a medical condition, it's important to stay on top of your health history.

In this episode, we're joined by Dr. Jannine Krause, a naturopathic doctor and acupuncturist. Dr. J is going to share with us how to reverse aging using natural methods. She'll also discuss three key areas to watch out for as you age and tests you can take in order to know your body's biological age.

  • Poor circulation is a major factor in aging. When you don't have enough blood flowing to your limbs, you can experience pain and inflammation in the area.
  • Mitochondria are the little factories in your cells that help to produce energy. When they break down, it can cause fatigue and other symptoms of aging.
  • The cardiovascular system is a major player in aging and longevity. The lungs and heart are both very important to the health of this system and can affect circulation.
  • Heart rate is a measure of the strength of your heart. It is also a measure of your ability to regulate your cardiovascular system.
  • Contrary to popular belief, heart health is something we can improve until the day we die. There are a variety of activities to choose from, including simple and fun ones like hula hooping and dancing.
  • If you're a woman in menopause or perimenopause, you don't have to do high intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts. In fact, it's probably best if you avoid them. HIIT workouts are great for people who are young and healthy, but they deplete midlife ladies.
  • Circulation and skin heath are closely related, which is why you can see puffiness and bloating in your face when you're dehydrated or have poor circulation, and deeper wrinkles as well.
  • The loss of collagen and elasticity also contributes to aging skin. You may opt to eat more protein and work on improving your digestion to slow down the aging process and keep your skin looking young.
  • Enzymes and hydrochloric acid are natural stimulants that can help your digestive system work more efficiently. They're commonly found in beets, apple cider vinegar, and bitters. These foods can help slow down skin wrinkling by keeping your digestive system healthy.
  • Your skin can be a window into your overall health. The wrinkles between your eyebrows are related to the urinary bladder, while crow's feet at the side of your eyes are related to the gallbladder. Yellowish skin could mean that you need more liver support, while grayish or blueish skin could indicate a gut issue or anemia. Dull skin may mean a vitamin C deficiency.
  • Adult acne can be caused by many different things. It may be a result of a microbiome imbalance or gut issue. Hormone imbalance is another common cause (excess testosterone or androgen levels), as well as allergies and liver toxins.
  • Epigenetic testing and Dunedin pace testing are two methods that can help you determine how fast you're aging. These tests can help you identify which parts of your genetics are aging faster than others, so that you can work on those areas to slow down or reverse the aging process.
  • The GI MAP and Dutch tests are microbiome and hormone tests, respectively, that can be helpful for determining some aging signs so you can address them. For example, you can find out what types of food to avoid and whether you have bacteria that are growing out of control.
  • Sometimes the best solutions take time. Take changing your diet, for example. While popping a pill to relieve symptoms is easier in the short-term, it's not sustainable—and it doesn't address the root cause of your problems.

In this episode, Dr. Shelly Bhowmik shares her tips for resetting negative thoughts that keep you stuck. She explains how to identify the thought patterns that keep you from moving forward and how to replace them with positive ones. She shares her personal story of overcoming burnout by learning how to change her thinking patterns, which she says helped her finally get the help she needed.

  • Sometimes we don't realize how bad our mental health has gotten until it's too late. We're all guilty of taking our mental health for granted, but that's because it's something that's always there—t's an essential part of who we are, and we don't even think about it until something goes wrong.
  • Mindset is medicine, but it's not just a way of looking at the world or an attitude adjustment. It's an entire lifestyle and way of thinking that will change everything for the better if you let it.
  • Your mindset is so powerful when it comes to transforming your health and well-being. It can be the difference between success and failure, between feeling good about yourself and not, between having energy and feeling tired all the time.
  • Technically, burnout is an occupational syndrome that is a result of neglected chronic workplace stress. Its three main characteristics are exhaustion, cynicism, and decreased professional efficacy.
  • Burnout could also mean acting without intention—being on autopilot, not being present. It occurs when you have been trying to do too much and it begins to affect your physical and emotional well-being.
  • The goal is to be more intentional about your daily activities so you can avoid burnout. This could mean paying attention to your energy levels, taking breaks when you need them, and making time for things that bring you joy.
  • Physical symptoms of burnout vary from person to person. Some people experience inflammation, hormonal imbalances, migraines, gastrointestinal issues, and eczema.
  • Burnout is a real problem for women in midlife. When you're dealing with hormonal changes and other stressors, it can make you feel more vulnerable to burnout. Women in perimenopause or menopause may be especially susceptible to burnout because of the extra weight they gain during these times.
  • You can fight burnout by building resilience. The ReST framework stands for REvive, Strive, and Thrive. It's a way of thinking about how to build up your resilience so you can keep going when things get tough.
  • Your thoughts are what drive all of your actions, they give rise to your feelings, and your feelings then give rise to your actions. This is why mastering your mindset is the place to start if you want to change the way things happen in your life.
  • Emotions and feelings are two different things. Emotions are the physical reactions that occur in your body when you're exposed to stress in your environment. Feelings are the mental processes that occur in response to thoughts.
  • Once you identify the limiting belief, it's time to reflect on whether or not that's really true. If it is, then there's nothing wrong with believing it--but if it isn't, then you can start rewriting that story that you're telling yourself.
  • Women of color and other marginalized people are often in environments that are not conducive to growth. We are made to believe that we are less important, and so there's a lot of work that constantly has to be done just to try and break away from those external messages that you receive.
  • Small wins add up to bigger things. When you're trying to achieve a goal, it can be easy to get discouraged when you don't immediately see results. But the truth is that small wins add up over time and help you meet your goals.

In this episode, we talk to Suzi B about how she was able to overcome postpartum depression and other struggles by forming specific healthy habits. We discuss the three habits system, replacement theory, and how you can use these concepts to form life-changing habits of your own.

  • The first step in forming a healthy habit is to start small. Making small changes to your daily routine can lead to big results, may it be physical or mental.
  • If you're trying to change your life, it's tempting to think that you have to change everything all at once. But in reality, changing one habit can have a dramatic impact on your life.
  • Contrary to popular belief, hating the way we look will not drive us to change. It is only when we accept ourselves that we can begin to grow and improve.
  • When you love yourself, you become motivated to treat it well. This is because when you love yourself, you're more likely to recognize what your body needs and wants in order to be healthy. If you don't love yourself, you may not take care of yourself as well as someone who does.
  • The three habits system is a simple way to create lasting change in your life. Pick one pillar of your life that you want to change—for example, your diet, exercise routine, or work habits. Then focus on it for two months by practicing three simple habits that apply to that one pillar you chose.
  • To create a cycle of internal motivation, you need to start by looking inward. Consider what drives you personally and why you want to make these changes.
  • Our brains are wired to find the things that we need to fix. We're constantly looking for ways to improve our lives and make them better, but this can lead us down a road of unhappiness that doesn't end.
  • Replacement theory is a way to fix your negative thoughts about yourself. If you see something negative about yourself, replace it with a goal. This can help you start thinking of what you'd like to do instead of focusing on what's wrong with you.
  • The mind-body connection is so powerful that once you master it, everything else just becomes smoother and easier. With practice, you can learn how to take control of your emotions and feelings by using your body as a tool for better health.
  • To create new habits, you need to harness the power of both your conscious and subconscious mind. Your conscious mind is in charge of making decisions about what you do. However, your subconscious mind will continue working away at the task even when you aren't thinking about it, creating a momentum of change.

In this episode, we talk to Dr. Mansi Shah about why a healthy gut is vital to midlife women. She explains how the gut-brain connection plays into everything from hormone balance and digestion to hair and skin. She also shares some tips for making changes that will help fix a leaky gut, including diet and lifestyle tips.

Poor nutrition can affect someone more adversely than others. This is because your genetic makeup plays a part in how you respond to different foods. If you have certain genes, you have an easier time digesting certain nutrients and vitamins.

  • Sugar is a drug. It's as much of a drug as cocaine or heroin. One your body becomes addicted to sugar, you may feel withdrawal symptoms when you stop your intake.
  • Gut health is important because it plays a role in how well you absorb nutrients from the food you eat. If your gut is out of whack, it can cause problems with digestion and absorption.
  • An unhealthy gut can cause your skin to break out and even cause you to break out. The connection between your digestive tract and your skin is pretty strong: if something is wrong in one place, it could be causing problems in the other.
  • If you think you might have a leaky gut, there are certain tests you can have done to confirm whether or not it's true. These include the Secretory IgA (SIgA) test and Zonulin test.

In a recent interview, Nina Manolson talks about the causes and effects of poor body image, and how to get help if you’re struggling. Nina tells us, “we have the ability to change the wave of body hate and body shame in our society, and we have the power to shift how the next generation sees themselves in the mirror.”

Key Takeaways:

  • With the support of a body-peace coach, you can learn to stop the inner conflict you have with your body.
  • The $72 billion diet culture tells us we are not ok, that the shape that we have is not ok.
  • The culture tells us we aren’t enough, and that gets passed on to our girls.
  • We will believe that being thin is powerful, yet we shy away from being truly in our power.
  • Treat your body as if you are in a relationship with it. You have to nurture your body and speak to it with love and compassion.
  • As women, we don’t want to manage, and we want someone to be on our side, an ally. That’s exactly what the body wants from us; an ally.
  • Transitioning from “body love” to a body relationship where it is ok to relax and speak the truth leads to true body appreciation, peace, and authentic body love.

About Our Guest

Nina Manolson is a Body-Peace® coach. She helps people end the war with food and body and finally feel truly at home in their body—as it is. She is known for her deeply feminist, anti-diet, body-peace approach. She brings her 30 years of experience as a therapist, Nationally Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, Body-Trust® Guide and Psychology of Eating Teacher to helping women create a respectful and trusting relationship with their food and body.

Nina’s Body-Peace work is all in service of helping people get off the diet roller-coaster and into a compassionate and powerful way of eating & living, which creates a positive, long-lasting change in and with their bodies. Her courses, coaching, and poetry positively change the conversation that women are having with their body. In this episode, I interview Dr. Karen Wolowick to discuss how your hormones affect you during menopause and how hormone replacement therapy, HRT, could potentially help midlife women during this stage in their lives. Dr. Wolowick also shared some tips for managing symptoms of menopause and balancing your overall health and wellness.

Key Takeaways

  • In the current healthcare landscape, physicians are measured by business-centric metrics like revenue and profit. This often leads to higher physician burnout, lower patient experience, and lower quality of health care provided.
  • Sleep is the number one most important thing for your health. If you are not getting good sleep every night, the body has a hard time keeping up. Your body, your memory, your energy levels—everything will suffer.
  • Your hormone levels change daily when you still have a normal period. But when you reach menopause, your estrogen can be constantly low, which can cause hot flashes, night sweats, and other symptoms.
  • It's important to remember that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to menopause. If you're experiencing symptoms that make it hard for you to live your life, hormone replacement therapy can be helpful in treating the overwhelming symptoms that affect your quality of life.
  • Common signs of menopause include hot flashes, dry skin, vaginal dryness, night sweats, sleeping problems, and hair thinning.
  • Hormone replacement therapy is a medical treatment that literally means replacing the hormones that are lost after menopause. It gives you back the estrogen and progesterone you've lost during menopause and helps you feel like yourself again.
  • Hormone replacement therapy is a safe and effective treatment for the majority of women. If you decide to try it, talk to your doctor about what's right for you. Consider your quality of life, menopause symptoms, family history, and risk factors—the whole picture.
  • It's not uncommon to experience a little bleeding after menopause. But if you notice any bleeding that seems like more than just a one-time thing, you should get evaluated. It could be just one last period, or it could be something more serious—you need to know.
  • It's hard to give up the things that make you feel good, but sometimes the answer is not a magic pill or an expensive treatment, but the obvious: sleep more, exercise more, and eat healthy foods.

Dr. Lynn Anderson joins me this week and talks about the perfect path to perfect health—which might not be what you expect or were led to believe. Join us as we discuss the three pillars of healthy midlife, how naturopathy can help you with your health struggles, what success really means, and more.

  • Naturopathy is a holistic approach that focuses on achieving perfect health by having a balanced body, mind, and soul. It brings natural elements and healthy lifestyle practices together to support this balance.
  • The color green has been proven to be good for your health and well-being. It's the middle of the color spectrum and is a balancing color. That's why when we're in nature or consuming nature, we get that wonderful balance kind of feeling.
  • Western medicine can work together with naturopathy for long-term and holistic wellness. The two can complement each other. It is important to understand that most doctors are not against naturopathy or other holistic healing modalities, they see it as a complement to western medicine rather than an alternative.
  • Diet, exercise, and sleep are the three pillars of health. If you take care of those three things, everything else will take care of itself.
  • The most important joint in your body is your jaw. It's the one you use to eat, talk, and express yourself. When we talk about jaw strength, we're talking about more than just being able to bite on food. Our jaws are the gateway to our digestive system, so they're critical for proper eating and digestion.
  • In yoga, there's this thing called "power channel" which goes from the root chakra up to your throat. These are the most important channels because this is where digestion (of food and nutrients), absorption (of complex ideas), and elimination (of toxins) happen. Without those three things, you cannot live.
  • It's easy to get caught up in the idea that success and failure are binary concepts. That's why we need to understand what success really means. When something fails, don't think of it as a failure—it just wasn't the right fit for you at this point in time.

In this interview, Dr. Stacey Francis, Chiropractic Kinesiologist, explains why we shouldn't wait until something dangerous happens to us or to people around us before we treat brain fog. Brain fog can be a serious condition that affects our ability to think clearly and make decisions. Listen in as she shares some clear steps for treating this common midlife problem.

Here are some episode highlights:

  • There are many other causes of brain fog apart from lack of sleep or stress. Blood sugar imbalances, hormone imbalances, anemia, and inflammation can all contribute to brain fog. It's important to identify the root cause of your brain fog to treat it effectively.
  • A chiropractic kinesiologist can help you correct imbalances in the body by using chiropractic tests and adjustments. Muscle testing is a useful tool for identifying what's going on in the body and identifying any stressors that may be contributing to brain fog.
  • It's important for us not to be constantly stuck in a fight-or-flight state and to be in a rest-and-digest state from time to time. Practices such as meditation, deep breathing, yoga, walking, and praying can all help us achieve this state and reduce stress.
  • Heavy periods could mean that you are losing a lot of iron, which can cause fatigue and brain fog. A ferritin test can help you determine if you have an iron deficiency.
  • Having sufficient folate in the body can help reduce brain fog and other mental health symptoms. Folate, or vitamin B9, is an important nutrient that plays a role in brain function and mental health.
  • Skipping meals can cause your brain to be attracted to the wrong types of food, leading to blood sugar imbalances and brain fog. It's important to fuel your body regularly to keep your brain functioning at its best.
  • The “1 plus 2 every 3 to 4 equals 12” method can help with brain fog and overall health. This means having one serving of protein and two servings of vegetables every 3-4 hours in a 12-hour period.

Dr. BreAnna and I had similar stories. We both felt like guinea pigs. We were poked and prodded and then asked to take medicines that ultimately didn’t heal our bodies.

“I tried acupuncture, herbs, raw food diet, vegan diet…one of the things that had the biggest impact, and I think I heard you say this, is when I stepped into the role of being my own advocate,” Dr. BreAnna.

We both decided that, in the end, we had to advocate for ourselves.

Here are some key takeaways:

  • Dr. BreAnna was put on birth control at the age of 14 to stop heavy menstrual cycles. She now questions why there weren’t options given to balance her hormones instead of medication that ultimately left her without her cycle.
  • How a better understanding of the SAD (Standard American Diet) helped uncover the cause of her heavy cycles.
  • Historically, we have feared questioning our doctors or asking for additional testing. Dr. BreAnna walks us through some steps that will make the conversation easier.
  • A better understanding of what heavy and or painful periods may be saying about what is going on in your body.
  • We should start having these conversations with the young women in our lives now.

During my interview with Catherine Staffieri, Registered Dietician, and Nutritionist, we discussed why, as you age, you may see increase in your blood sugar levels. “Women sometimes will experience erratic hormone levels with their estrogen and progesterone as they go through the menopause transition. And estrogen is very closely linked with insulin sensitivity. When our cells are less sensitive to insulin, the cells can't work as intended.”

Catherine further explains the difference between glucose and insulin, and she provides some easy-to-follow, no-cost ideas on how to stay healthy.

Highlights from our conversation:

  • Estrogen and progesterone levels are closely linked to insulin levels. As our estrogen and progesterone decrease, we may become insulin sensitive.
  • We have a natural tendency to lose muscle mass as we age, and forty-five minutes per day on the elliptical is not the only thing you need to do to fight muscle loss.
  • Eat carbohydrates. Glucose fuels your body, and your body and brain need the glucose from carbohydrates.
  • Eating quality protein must be a priority to keep strong muscles.
  • Using a continuous glucose monitor can help you get a better understanding of the glucose and insulin changes in your body.

In this episode, I spoke with Dr. Janet Williams, OB/GYN, about the many ways our bodies change as we mature —and what we can do to keep our sexual health in check.

We cover everything from pain to dryness. I know that as we age, it can feel like our bodies are changing in ways that we don't always understand or appreciate. Thankfully, Dr. Janet is here to help us uncover ways to support our sexual health.

Key Takeaways

  • Sexual health is vital to a woman’s overall health, but society hasn’t given us much chance to discuss it.
  • Historically, there was not a lot of guidance when it comes to women’s sexual health, even in medical training. This lack of knowledge has led to some serious consequences over the years.
  • Stress has a significant impact on our mental health as well as our physical health. It can have a negative impact on your sex drive, making you feel less comfortable in your own skin and leading you to avoid intimacy altogether.
  • There are personal trainers, business coaches, and even life coaches. But there is also an intimate life coach—someone who can help you navigate all the parts and pieces that factor into your intimate health and wellness.
  • A good intimate life coach has a full understanding of what's going on physically and emotionally. They will work with you to assess your current state and offer solutions for improvement.
  • Every woman should have a self-care regimen that helps improve their intimate life. It's about getting in touch with yourself emotionally but also physically. Self-care is a way to take care of your body and mind, and it can help you feel more comfortable in your own skin and more confident in your relationships with others.
  • Low libido is one of the most common concerns that women in midlife experience. It's multifactorial, and it comes and goes, but there are some things you can do to help yourself feel more like yourself again.

We all know that sleep is important. But in midlife, sleep can be downright elusive.

In this episode, we're talking with Kareese Laguerre about what may be keeping us from getting that perfect night's rest as midlife women. She's also sharing tons of solutions that will have you sleeping like a baby even if you are struggling with midlife changes—so you can get the best quality sleep possible.

  • Traditional medicine can be very beneficial, but oftentimes, it provides palliative options and does not really get to the root cause of health issues.
  • There are issues that are so common to children, may it be physical or behavioral, that we just write them off as normal. But if we never do anything about them, these children may grow into unhealthy adults.
  • We tend to focus on the wrong areas. Everything important is above the shoulders, but people usually focus on the muscles below.
  • Myofunctional therapy is sort of like personal training that aims to optimize our breathing for better sleep and neural function. It sounds like a simple concept, but it can profoundly affect our health.
  • Sleep is very intertwined with breathing. We tend to just lie down and get it over with, but breathing is actually key to helping us regulate sleep.
  • Breathing issues, like snoring and sleep apnea, are common causes of poor sleep. This is because the brain becomes busy ensuring you're still getting enough oxygen to be alive instead of focusing on your sleep.
  • Many people have some level of fatigue, but not all fatigue is the same. Many things, including sleep problems and dietary issues can cause fatigue.
  • A good sleep routine is just as important to adults as it is to children. It's necessary for good physical and mental performance.
  • There are a number of factors that can affect how well you sleep, but there are also some things you can do to improve your sleeping environment. This can make it easier to get a good night's rest—and wake up feeling refreshed.
  • If you've been struggling with insomnia or another sleep disorder for so long, it is crucial to see your physician and ask if they offer solutions that target the root cause of your problems, not just symptoms.

In today's episode, we're talking about managing perimenopause and menopause in the workplace. Our guest is Luce Beaulieu, and she shares some great tips with us on how to manage these transitions effectively.

We also talk about preparing ourselves mentally and physically for the next phase of our lives and how having the right support system around us can make all the difference in how we manage this transition.

Here are some key takeaways from our conversation:

  • Menopause and perimenopause are within a continuum that goes on for many, many years in a woman's life. It's important to know where you are in that continuum so that you know how to care for yourself.
  • There is a need for top management and HR to be more educated about properly managing and supporting women in menopause. It starts with understanding how to better support women through their menopausal transition and how this can benefit the employee, their families, and the company.
  • Menopause is like a "portal" because you don't know what it really is until you're in it. The symptoms vary from woman to woman, so it’s only through personal experience that you can really fully understand its implications.

I'm this week's guest! Thanks to my friend Mark Peyko for a great interview.

I've taken many journeys throughout my life, always trying to find my passion. It took a health crisis and job loss for me to make a move.

In March 2017, I was walking in New Orleans; I stepped on Bourbon Street and almost passed out. My body became numb, my breathing short and my left jaw began to tingle. This started a 2-year process of trying to figure out what was wrong with me.

On top of having every typical stroke symptom, I also began to suffer from migraines and anxiety.

I visited neurologists, physical therapists, acupuncturists, chiropractors (note the plural on each specialist).

I saw over 18 physicians (Western and Eastern medicine); I had multiple MRI's and too many emergency room visits, and I spent $20,000 out of pocket on medical care. No one had an answer.

In this episode, I talk about how I got to this place and more importantly, how you can avoid getting here.

Dr. David Shirazi makes some medical connections around the impact of sleep on migraines, fibromyalgia, weight gain, and depression.

If you are concerned about any of these, you’ll want to make sure you listen to this episode so you can go to your next doctor's appointment ready to discuss solutions.

Sleep apnea is a newly researched sleep disorder. Testing to determine baseline was only done on adult white males, leaving ways of determining if you had a disorder only suitable for that particular segment of the population.

With ongoing research, studies have shown that with a 5 or less is “normal” for an adult white male, a 4 for postmenopausal women can cause depression, migraines, and fibromyalgia.

Dr. Shirazi also explains the different types of headaches you may be having and what steps you can take to get rid of them.

From self-advocacy when it comes to talking to your doctor, to understanding why Western and Eastern medicine can help you live your best life, this Howard University grad breaks it all down in an easy-to-understand manner.

Drinking is part of a social norm.

Birthdays, graduations, sports events, dinner parties - serving and drinking alcohol is expected.

It’s also the norm to have a drink after the end of a long day to relax. But what is the actual impact on your body? And is your body truly in a relaxed state?

People who drink are considered “normal” while people who decline are quizzed - what’s wrong? Are you pregnant? Got a big presentation tomorrow?

If you’ve decided to live alcohol-free, how can you - just say no - without feeling left out?

There are so many questions, and today our guest, Karolina Rządkowolska, Alcohol-Free Coach, has scientific answers for you. She’s not here to tell you not to drink but to help you think through how this habit aligns with your deeper self.

Karolina shares her story of how heavy drinking during her college years and living for the weekend lifestyle contradicted her lifestyle of practicing yoga and meditating. She also tells us how drinking made her depressed, sleep-deprived and caused her to have high cholesterol.

But what would happen if she stopped? Would she be labeled an alcoholic?

Finally, she decided that was a risk she was willing to take.

Our conversation starts by delving into the stigma around what it looks like to stop drinking and quickly gets to the rewards.

Here are some highlights:

  • Stopping can:
    • heal liver fat by 15%
    • regrow brain grey matter in as little as two weeks
    • decrease blood pressure in as little as two weeks
    • decrease inflammation in the body
  • Drinking does not help you relax - it actually increases your cortisol levels
  • Tips on inspiring friends - without feeling as if you are calling them out

I enjoy all of my guests, these  men and women have provided me with valuable nuggets of information that have helped me personally and professionally.  But, I’ll have to admit, I geeked out when I was able to book Jane Esselstyn.  With the encouragement of one of my clients I reached out and she said yes!

Why this guest?  Because she is the daughter of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn and part of a family that I’ve followed for years...a family that helped me as I transitioned to a plant-based lifestyle.  Many of you may have heard of Forks Over Knives; it was the documentary that I watched 10+ years when I made the transition.  I’d recommend you check it out; and if your husband is the hold out - have him watch The Game Changers (Netflix).

Jane Esselstyn RN is a fresh, charismatic voice who brings her perspective and passion as a nurse, researcher, mother, and teacher to the forefront of the plant-based movement. She presents her work, research, and high energy demos around the world- and on her new YouTube channel with her firecracker mom, Ann Esselstyn.  Women, families, and community drive Jane’s work forward. She is the host of the annual conference, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease for Women, which is focused on the power of plants! Jane claims, “Prevention is the new cure, and the most powerful, relevant, and protective medicine available”. With full enthusiasm, Jane co-founded Well, Now! Camp – an activity-filled, creative escape for Plant-Based Women Warriors – because vitality rocks!

Jane is an avid and inventive designer of plant-strong recipes and the co-author of The Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Cookbook. She created the recipe sections of #1 NYTimes bestseller, Plant-Strong and The Engine 2 Seven Day Rescue, by Rip Esselstyn.
