Nothing to be Ashamed of
Shame is not guilt. Guilt is something I feel because I did something, shame attaches itself to my identity. It tells me that I am unworthy or no better than my worst moment. Jesus hates that you are still carrying shame.

Often times after we have faced something hard we look back and see the decisions we made and say something like: it had to be done. When you look at the cross and all that Jesus endured, that is exactly how Jesus felt. Jesus did that so that we could live.

Can you imagine a world where Jesus does not exist? Some think that is already the case, but I disagree. If Jesus does not do all that he does, this world looks very different. Horrific things happened on Friday for Jesus, but man was it good on Sunday.

Our world is facing a sadness epidemic. Our teens are especially in danger of hopelessness having too much power in their life. As we look to Jesus and his final week, how did Jesus deal with intense sadness?

It’s not a shock to say that life is hard or can be very difficult at times. How we deal with those times has a lot to do with how well we prepare. Jesus seems to push the idea that being ready for Him can make a huge difference in our life.

Nobody’s Perfect
There are a couple of angles we can think about in this almost true. Some of us have the unhealthy desire known as perfectionism and how we see ourselves and others is always skewed. The other bent is that I am not perfect so why try. But God calls us to perfection, how do we avoid these pitfalls, but honor God?

The Happiness Gospel
God wants us to be happy, right? Now I happen to believe that scripture says that God loves it when we are happy, but our happiness is not His primary concern. However, some people make the connection that if I am not happy then either there is not God or God does not love me.

This sounds so right in our current culture. This phrase has come as a counter to all the bullying or negative self-images of the past. There is some truth in it, but there is a very sinister piece to this philosophy that can lead us away from God.

Self-Love or Selfish
Jesus said that part of the greatest commandment was to love my neighbor as myself. What does this self-love look like and how do we keep it from becoming only about me? Especially when most other commands from Jesus revolve around me putting others first.

Many people today confuse truth with perspective. When we do that it makes truth subjective and open to whatever that individual thinks. So what is true to me, may not be true to you, but we are encouraged to live our truth, speak our truth and it seems right. What if this was a trap?

When we encounter Jesus and make Him a priority, we experience genuine life change. So often we just go through the motions or do the most urgent things on our to-do lists, but far too often we neglect the most important things.

There are parties, family get-togethers, gifts to buy, things to do and that is just the stuff that is supposed to bring us joy. The world is a scary place right now, lots of division, wars throughout the world and so many other problems. When you combine the state of the world and the busyness of Christmas it can make us feel a bit weary. Not much has changed since that first Christmas in regards to issues in the world, but one thing that did, was Jesus coming down. Christmas brings Hope, Peace, Joy and love right smack in the middle of all those weary things.
Surprised by Love
This week we zero in on why joy is possible in a world that can be so weary. Love came down and moved into the neighborhood. Love changed everything. This week we celebrate the Love of God with a service filled with fun, special music and some adorable actors.

The world is a scary place right now, lots of division, wars throughout the world and so many other problems. When you combine the state of the world and the busyness of Christmas it can make us feel a bit weary. Not much has changed since that first Christmas in regards to issues in the world, but one thing that did, was Jesus coming down. Christmas brings Hope, Peace, Joy and love right smack in the middle of all those weary things.
Happiness or Joy
We live in a world that is obsessed with trying to make ourselves happy. We try all the fads, we buy all the things, we “do the work”, we go to therapy and on and on. Happiness is an emotion, as in it is fleeting. Joy on the other hand is a decision and a character quality. Christmas is a time when we were first told of great news that would bring great joy. God wants us happy, but more importantly, He wants us to choose Joy.

Peace - Good or great
You hear it all the time, this thing or that food or that place is so ‘good’. Now I happen to think that’s bad. I think it’s bad because we are becoming increasingly satisfied with good or average or alright. God has great news for us. God wants the best for us. Best doesn’t have to be most expensive or hard to get, but it does require us to not settle.

The Gift of Hope
The Christmas season has many special qualities and traditions, and most people really love this time of year. However, thrown in the middle of all those good vibes is a world that is packed with obligations, events, costs and that does not even take into account the state of our world. If we stop and look around it can be pretty scary. This is why we need to look to Christmas a bit deeper and find the hope.
"You Can't hurry love"
We feel more busy and rushed than ever and when you add the holidays onto that, it's almost overwhelming. Jesus gives us a pretty strong word in the gospels that states the busier I am, the harder it is to love.

Kingdoms and Covenants
Jesus often talked about the kingdom of God and the kingdom of this world. They are sharp differences between the two or at least there should be. Same is said of the Old and New covenants we are told about. I wonder if we are representing the wrong kingdom or living in the Old.

What we are losing
If I were to ask you what is the faith of the next generation worth, what would you say? Hopefully Everything, but that is not playing out. Are we more concerned out our children’s political views or their faith? The church is losing influence to those under the age of 40 and politics is a huge factor. Is there another way?

When Fear Rules
Fear is one of the greatest motivators in our world and a weapon used most often in the political world. Fear of the other sells, fear of the unknown sells and when we make decisions based on fear, we lose. The most common command from Jesus was to “Fear not.”

I honestly think most Christians think the same answer to this question. Here the kicker, I also think that most non-Christians don’t believe us and I think they are right. Politics are causing division and that division hurts our witness. What does Jesus call us to?

The Trinity is one of the essential teachings of the Church. It is the doctrine that expresses the nature of God as father, Son and Holy Spirit existing in unity with one another. There is a powerful truth about God’s love being experienced in community that we all need to be reminded of.

What a stupid phrase, brilliant ad campaign but horrible meaning. This lie gives rise to the idea that if no one is there to witness it or finds out, then it does not matter. That is not how our actions work, because there are always consequences.

All of us at one time or another have seen ourselves as less than. This lie has only been magnified by social media. Because now all we see are other people we know having more, doing more, looking better and it causes us to believe this lie even more.

One of the lies we often carry is one that keeps us stuck. We settle for what is or has been, instead of what could be. Setting our minds on truth and off of just ourselves can make a huge difference.

“Bootstrapping”
There is an old lie that goes: God helps the one that helps themselves. That lie pushes an agenda that I always have to be strong according to the world and I have to do it alone. All of these ideas are unbiblical and look nothing like Jesus.

Barbie is one of the biggest box office movies ever and as a character she tends to draw emotions on all sides. There is a tension between what some think she stands for and it’s not solved by one movie. The movie revolves around identity and expectations and at the heart is a call to truly see the image of God in everyone.

Spider-Man: Across Spider-verse
One of the things about Spiderman and why he is the greatest superhero ever written. Stan Lee wanted people to have a character that was a real person, had real issues, but this other responsibility thrust upon him, he never stopped being a teenager and dealing with those coming of age questions, but also having to deal with evil forces and others things that like to get in the way. We have more in common with Spidey than we thought.
Scuba
Our kids in the next week will be learning all about what kind of a Friend we have in God. A friend is someone you can trust, someone that loves you, someone that sticks by you through it all. That is not a message just meant for kids. As we share with them during VBS, it felt like a good idea to be reminded of this truth.
God is a friend you can trust
When things are uncertain or fearful or life feels life a never-ending set of storms, it helps to have someone you can trust to guide you through it. Or to have someone that will be present in the midst of the storm.
Scuba
Our kids in the next week will be learning all about what kind of a Friend we have in God. A friend is someone you can trust, someone that loves you, someone that sticks by you through it all. God is a friend who loves
It’s easy to love people that we feel are loveable or love us back. However, God shows us that His Love extends far beyond easy. What does it look like to love people even though they hurt you or are nothing like you?

We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus on this day and reflect on his walk on earth.
Through the “I am” statements, Jesus promises to be our spiritual nourishment and strength, our illumination and guide, our way to have a relationship with God, our life and victory, our safety and protection, our salvation, freedom and purpose, and our way to spiritual growth.
Thinking about Jesus being the “I am”, how is Jesus is a threat, both on a world level and individual level?

Filling-
Jesus knew what awaited Him when he arrived in Jerusalem that Sunday. He went anyway. What if the church was that courageous in its faith and devotion to Jesus? What area of your life do you need filled the most?

I realize this is not a real word, but it can help get at the point of the inner work we do around Lent is not just for us but meant for the sake of the whole world. Is the work I am doing with Jesus showing up in how I treat others? Matt 23:27-28

Grieving-
Sometimes Christians treat sin like it’s no big deal. It’s just a little white lie or a mistake. As if all sin needs is an eraser, but maybe that’s why we fall so often. We don’t get at the root and it hangs around longer than it should. Joel 2:12-14

In many traditions, Lent is the season where someone prepares to be baptized. They ask the question, “am I ready for everything that comes after I make this declaration?” God has an amazing plan for each of us. Phil 3:7-11

Worshipping-
The Old Testament system had a rinse and repeat effect to it. As if you knew it was flawed from the start. Maybe this season you have not kept a discipline. I wonder if that means we have a deeper need for Jesus’ help than we thought. Heb 10:1-12

Who’s Missing?

Why this and not that?
The book of Ezra opens with God using a pagan king to move his people out of exile to rebuild their temple and city. Amazing! But then their work is delayed for an extended season because of scheming opponents. Why does God move so swiftly and powerfully in some situations and then stay quiet at other times?

What Does God Require

That is not what God means in Micah 6:8. God simply lays out that if you want to call yourself his people, this is what they look like. They act justly, they love mercy and they are known for their humility.
Walk Humbly
How do you respond to a person that is a little big for their britches, or really full of themselves? Our world has made having an ego important for success. So, displaying humility seems to choose failure. The world is upside down and we are a part of making it right-side up again.

What Does God Require

Loving Kindness
In Micah one translation says that we should love mercy. I think most people like it when people are merciful on them, but what does it mean to love it? The Hebrew word here is ‘loving-kindness’, it’s a word attributed to God, but we are called to display it to.

Do Justice
God calls Christians to ‘do justice’, in America there is a pledge of allegiance that states ‘and justice for all.’ Do we actually believe that? Do we think we have a part in making that happen? We look to see what does God mean by justice and how we collaborate.
Pre-Decide
What if becoming the person you want to be starts long before the moment you make a decision? Before you click "buy," before you take one more bite, or before you lash out at the people you love. Can the decisions you make today help you live the life you really want tomorrow?

There are characteristics about God that never get old. As we wake up this Christmas morning, we want to think about how God cares, loves and is present with us.

So often we imagine peace as quiet and that is fine. What I have found is that most people don’t focus on peace, but all the things keeping us from peace. Instead of imagining God taking you to some quiet mountain lake, imagine God in the middle of all that anti-peace.

We are very familiar with counselors in our day and age. One of the main goals of any counselor is to help you move to a healthier space. Great counselors listen, but so do those that seek counsel.

What would actually happen if I began to see myself as God sees me, instead of how I usually see me or how others see me? I’m not talking self-confidence, but God confidence.

I’m optimistic
So many get caught up in the argument of being pessimistic or realistic and we think being optimistic means seeing the world through rose colored glasses. But I’m not optimistic because of how I feel, but because of what God says.

Jesus used these stories to talk about the kingdom of God, the character of God and the expectations God has on His people. Missing the Point
In the story of the rich man and Lazarus I think we have two cases of missing the point. The most prominent of course is the rich man. Even in death and torment, our boy does not get it. But we also misread this parable and treat it as literal and easily miss out.

Forgiveness to reconciliation
“Love means never having to say your sorry.” What a bunch of bologna that is. That only leads to a life of resentment and bottled-up feelings that will always explode at some point. God calls us to something better..

Being forgiven is not a ‘get out of all the consequences pass.’ It is great to be forgiven or offer forgiveness, but there are still things that need to happen or tough decisions to be made. Something like abuse has to stop, not just be forgiven once a week.

Peter was fine with the idea of forgiving someone. I am sure he felt forgiveness when he wronged someone in his life, but what if people keep making the same mistakes or keep hurting us? When is forgiveness taken advantage of?

Sometimes I wonder if people stay on the fringes in church because they don’t know what god has called them to or if leaders don’t want to let others into power. Being the Church is not a spectator sport, there are no bench players and everyone is needed.

I love a good RomCom and this is a classic from the 90’s. What is it about family that is so powerful? Family has the power to draw us close and make us feel safe, but also teach us about right and wrong.

Free Guy
What role are we playing in this world? Are we a background character in our own story or are we trapped in some way? Guy finds out he’s just a side character and decides to become a hero. In order to become a hero, he must be free. Freedom requires love, in more ways than one.

Bitter roots grow bitter fruit
When we hold onto anger or withhold forgiveness the consequences usually only affect us. Bitterness disrupts our relationships and hurts our physical well-being as well. There really is a limit to how much we can carry.

Hezekiah
A Very human King- This king has all the makings of a really great leader and most of the time he chooses well. However, he is also very human and things like pride or trusting in ourselves always seems to be a hindrance.
Promises
are an affirmation of love, respect, and friendship. They say someone really cares about me. They are not just meant to be empty words, but powerful statements of commitment. In the Scriptures, we have “I am” statements, which describe God’s character, but we also get tons of “I will” statements. These are promises God offers that we can rest in.
“I will Give”
The Bible starts in a garden with two trees and it ends in a garden as well. God’s promise for every person that believes is a life that is forever filled with His presence. This resurrection Sunday we celebrate the promise of new life.

are an affirmation of love, respect, and friendship. They say someone really cares about me. They are not just meant to be empty words, but powerful statements of commitment. In the Scriptures, we have “I am” statements, which describe God’s character, but we also get tons of “I will” statements. These are promises God offers that we can rest in.
“I Will Send”
Jesus reminds the disciples that He is about to die on the cross and they are going to continue His mission. He says this and offers them a pretty big piece of comfort; God will send His Spirit to live within them.

Jesus knows our pain and struggles and never minimizes them, but offers us something in the midst, his peace. He also reminds us that there is something very good about stopping and recharging.

This year marks an interesting date: 2/22/22. we felt like that was a lot of 2’s and it made us think about how things are better together. Jesus sent out the disciples in pairs, God said it was not good for man to be alone, where two or three are gathered. two can defend themselves and so on. We are going to have some fun with this one.
Sent out in Two’s
If Jesus sent out the disciples in two’s. we felt that two preachers has to be right up there. Why does Jesus do this? What is it about doing really important things that makes it so important that others are involved?
