This week we’re discussing the fourth mainline entry in the Metroid series, That One Game: Metroid Fusion! Released on November 18 of 2002, the same day as Metroid Prime, Metroid Fusion was a direct sequel to 1994’s Super Metroid.
In the game, Samus is called to investigate an outbreak of a malicious alien parasite known as X. In a slight departure from the open-ended exploration of the series to date, Metroid Fusion chose a more linear approach, perhaps to make it more easily digestible given its release on a handheld platform like the Gameboy Advance.

This week we’re discussing Final Fantasy’s first entry on the Super Nintendo, That One Game: Final Fantasy IV. Released in Japan on July 19 of 1991, Final Fantasy IV introduced the series’ famous Active-Time Battle system which involved players inputting commands during battle in real-time rather than a traditional turn-based system. Characters’ turns were determined by a bar that would gradually fill at a rate based on the stats of each respective character. This system would go on to be iterated on and refined throughout the next several games in the franchise. Notably, the game also featured a much larger emphasis placed on story and characters than previous entries, following the Dark Knight Cecil on his journey of redemption and quest to save the world from an ancient evil intent on using the world’s crystals to reap destruction. The game’s cast is full of memorable characters, from Cecil the protagonist to his best friend Kain the Dragoon, to Rydia the young summoner and Cid the energetic engineer.
Interestingly, when Final Fantasy IV arrived in North America on November 23 of 1991, it did so under the name Final Fantasy II instead. Square’s logic at the time was to do this so as not to confuse American players since at the time the only other game in the series they had access to was Final Fantasy 1, which released for the NES just a year prior. Later, subsequent rereleases would restore its rightful title.

This week we’ll be discussing Role-Playing Games, or RPGs for short. These games come in many varieties both in gameplay and structure. Some RPGs favor an approach similar to Dungeons and Dragons, providing many means for the player to craft their own narratives, while others lean more heavily into the story they wish to tell and allow players other methods to customize their experience. From Dragon Quest to Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy to The Witcher, this genre is incredibly vast, especially in the modern era when most AAA games incorporate features from RPGs in some way, shape, or form. And we’ll do our best to talk about it here today!

This week, Sonic Month concludes as we dive into the final game in the highly regarded trilogy of Sonic games for the Gameboy Advance, That One Game: Sonic Advance 3. Released on June 7 of 2004, Sonic Advance 3 followed suit with its predecessors by making numerous changes over the previous installment. New hub worlds were added for each of the game’s main Zones, as opposed to the player selecting each Act via a menu. Additionally, fan favorite Chaos made a return as hidden collectibles scattered throughout the game.
Perhaps the biggest gameplay change, however, comes in the form of the teams mechanic, where the player would select two characters to play through each level with. Each character has their own special abilities and play styles and mixing and matching allowed for numerous ways to solve the game’s challenges.

This week we’re discussing one of the most beloved games of the Nintendo 64 era, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time. Released on November 21 of 1998, Ocarina of Time marked the Zelda franchise’s first jump into 3D graphics and is widely regarded by many as not only one of the best entries in the series, but one of the best games of all time.
In the game, players would use the titular Ocarina of Time, a magical instrument capable of altering the world in a variety of ways depending on what song was played using different combinations of buttons on the controller, each assigned to a specific note. Through this, players could do things like solve puzzles, change the time of day, or even travel between two different eras - one where Link is a child, and the other an adult - with the world state being drastically different depending which era the player chooses.

It’s our final episode of 2024 and we’re going out with a bang with a game that not only spawned one of gaming’s most beloved franchises, but helped launch its console as a serious competitor in the industry. We’re talking about none other than That One Game, Halo: Combat Evolved. Released on November 15, 2001 alongside Microsoft’s Xbox game console, Halo revolutionized the first person shooter genre for consoles and established a standard that the genre still adheres to to this day.
In addition to an iconic campaign that was fully playable via 2-player splitscreen co-op, Halo had its own multiplayer mode that took advantage of the Xbox’s four controller ports. Multiplayer maps varied from small arenas to large open battlefields optimized for combat with the game’s generous variety of vehicles. When the game eventually made its way to PC, so too did the multiplayer enjoy online matchmaking for the very first time.

This week, in celebration of our 64th episode we will be discussing none other than the iconic gaming console known as the Nintendo 64. Released in Japan on June 23, 1996 and in North America later that year on September 29th, the N64 marked Nintendo’s first big foray into 3D gaming. Unlike its competitors in the Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn, Nintendo opted to maintain the use of cartridges as the format for its games rather than springing for the shiny new compact disc medium of its contemporaries. This would both aid and harm the success of the console, as while the cartridge medium did allow for advantages like shorter loading times compared to compact discs, they sorely lacked in storage capacity which caused many developers (including some longtime Nintendo partners like Squaresoft) to look to its competitors to deliver the games they were creating.
However, in spite of losing ground to the Sony Playstation, the N64 still held its own with a strong list of exclusives, including the likes of Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Additionally, thanks to its four included controller ports, the console was a huge multiplayer success with titles like Super Smash Bros and Goldeneye 007. Speaking of controllers, that is also a huge point of discussion surrounding the system thanks to its unique 3-pronged design.

Lock and load because this week Jazzy from the TOGP Discord joins us on an adventure to save the galaxy in the second entry of a beloved Playstation franchise, That One Game: Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando. Released for the Playstation 2 on November 11, 2003, Going Commando sought to improve upon the first game in the series in every way imaginable and largely succeeded at that. The game received universal acclaim across the board and was praised for its graphics, sound design and humor, alongside a plethora of gameplay improvements.
The game stars the titular Ratchet and Clank as they have accepted a mission to retrieve a biological experiment stolen by a masked thief. However during the process they soon discover all is not as it seems and quickly find themselves attempting to stop a mass outbreak of dangerous creatures.

This week we’re looking broadly at indie, AA, and AAA games and doing a bit of a compare and contrast, discussing the strengths and weaknesses of each one, where our preferences tend to lie, and more!
Indie games, typically defined by their smaller independent development teams and lower budgets, have seen a significant boost in popularity over the last decade by providing smaller, often more unique experiences compared to their AA or AAA counterparts.
AA games typically fall a bit short of AAA in scope and scale, as well as budget, and have seemingly nearly gone away over the last decade as large publishers put all their eggs into their big budget AAA offerings. However, with recent shifts in the industry post-pandemic, these types of games are starting to work their way back as publishers realize AAA development is getting too costly to be sustained.
And AAA games are the big blockbuster experiences with massive budgets and development teams and frequently push the boundaries of technology available while playing it safe from an overall game design standard.

This week we’re diving into the first ever massively-multiplayer online game made specifically for consoles - That One Game: Phantasy Star Online! Originally released near the tail end of the year 2000 for the Sega Dreamcast, PSO took advantage of the Dreamcast’s online functionality to allow up to four players to team up and take on a variety of missions together. The game’s story tasks players with investigating the catastrophe that befell Pioneer 1, the previous expedition sent to the planet Ragol with hopes of colonization. Throughout the story the player would discover notes left behind by a character by the name of Red Ring Rico, a Pioneer 2 resident that seemingly vanished upon reaching Ragol’s surface. Through these notes something sinister is discovered regarding the true nature of the planet and Pioneer 1’s misfortune. Players were also able to create their own characters from one 12 different different classes, each with unique strengths and weaknesses. Upon release PSO was met with critical acclaim. It would later see ports to Xbox, Gamecube, as well as PC, and even today, years after its official servers went offline, there remains a strong fan community keeping the game alive via the Ephinea private servers.

This week we’re discussing a level design trope in video games that many would rather didn’t exist - Water levels! These levels either take place underwater with some kind of swimming mechanic, or at minimum feature water as a central theme or mechanic. They often include changes to player mobility - especially in the underwater examples - which doesn’t always go over well amongst players, as a lot of times movement speed through the level is hindered. We’ll be discussing the design trope as a whole, specific cases that we dislike the most, and MAYBE even offering some examples of where it’s done well.

In this episode we’re discussing the first release in a beloved, classic Playstation franchise - Sly Cooper and the Thievius Racoonus! Released on September 23 of 2002, Sly Cooper blended stealth with action platforming with a cell-shaded graphical style and followed Sly and his two partners Bentley the turtle and Murray the hippo in their quest to liberate the titular Thievius Racoonus - a fabled book, and also a family heirloom of Sly’s that chronicled all of the thieving skills of his ancestors - from the evil group the Fiendish Five.
Each of the game’s five worlds revolves around one of the Fiendish Five and features a selection of levels that range from traditional platforming to other activities like racing or piloting a variety of other vehicles. Spread throughout the levels are also a series of collectibles like the traditional coins which grant an extra life for every 100 collected, or “clues” which are represented by glass bottles scattered throughout each level, and once all are found grant Sly the ability to open a vault found somewhere in that level to receive a single page torn from the Thievius Racoonus, granting him a new ability.

Last year we introduced the Indie Sample Pack, a type of episode where the three of us pick an indie game for the group to play, and we discuss our thoughts on the games based on early impressions. This week we’ve got something of a That One Game Double Feature for you, as we’re talking about not one, but TWO games - those games in question being the first two games in the critically acclaimed Sonic Advance trilogy developed by Dimps in collaboration with Sega for the Gameboy Advance. The first game released in North America on February 4 of 2002 and was praised for its graphics and animation, as well as its resemblance to the original games from the Sega Genesis. On March 10 of the following year, Sonic Advance 2 would release once again to critical acclaim. The sequel also received praise for its additions in replay value over the first game.

This week Metroid month concludes with a bang, because we’re discussing what’s widely agreed to be one of the greatest games ever made - That One Game: Metroid Prime. Originally released on November 18, 2002 for the Nintendo GameCube, Metroid Prime brought the franchise’s signature exploration-based gameplay into the third dimension for the very first time. Interestingly, it was not the only Metroid game released on that day, as the Gameboy Advance game Metroid Fusion - the fourth entry in the 2D series - shared a simultaneous release, and both games were able to connect via link cable to unlock special features. Both games were critically acclaimed at launch and Metroid Prime is still to this day one of the highest rated games of all time.
Developed in collaboration between Nintendo and Austin, Texas-based Retro Studios, Metroid Prime takes place in the years between the first two mainline Metroid games as the bounty hunter Samus Aran finds herself on the planet Tallon IV after intercepting a distress beacon from a Space Pirate ship orbiting the planet. Upon investigating the planet she discovers experiments conducted by the Space Pirates involving a massive sealed-off crater and a mysterious substance flowing from it known as Phazon.
Early last year Nintendo surprised us all during a February Nintendo Direct by announcing a brand new HD re-release of the game, with the digital version dropping that very same day. Dubbed Metroid Prime Remastered, it sported updated visuals and controls to bring the game up to speed for modern audiences.

Metroid Month continues this week with an episode all about the genre that Metroid helped give birth to–Metroidvanias! First brought to popularity by the genre’s namesake games of Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Metroidvania games place a heavy emphasis on exploration and tight gameplay, with areas on the map typically gated off until the player unlocks a certain ability to allow passage. As such, back-tracking is a common theme in these games and the best Metroidvanias use that to great effect. The genre has also seen a great resurgence in the Indie space, thanks in part to games like Ori and the Blind Forest and Hollow Knight.

For our first episode of the month we’re taking a look back at the man that some would say is the father of Metroid, the legendary creator Gunpei Yokoi. Though he tragically passed away in 1997, his contributions to Nintendo and video games in general are as important as they are numerous. In addition to acting as producer for the first two Metroid games, Gunpei Yokoi is also responsible for the adoption of the cross-shaped D-Pad that is now a staple of video game controllers, and also the invention of the Game Boy itself.

This week Colin, Lucas, and Neal embark on a journey through time in the classic 1995 RPG, That One Game: Chrono Trigger! Developed by Square and released for the Super Nintendo on March 11 of 1995 in Japan and later on August 11 in North America, the game was met with overwhelming critical praise for its story, gameplay, and music.
Chrono Trigger’s development team was dubbed internally as the “Dream Team”, consisting of Final Fantasy’s Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest’s Yuji Horii, and Dragonball’s Akira Toriyama. For the longest time it had been a dream of Sakaguchi to build a game with Horii and Toriyama and the stars finally aligned to give birth to Chrono Trigger. Gameplay was revolutionary for the RPG genre at the time, featuring a turn-based battle system where all battle encounters took place on the world map, with no transitions to and from battle scenes. Additionally, the Super Nintendo was put through its paces with a spectacular array of visual effects used throughout the game, and especially in combat.
The game’s soundtrack marked the lead composer debut of now industry legend Yasunori Mitsuda, who along with some contributions from Final Fantasy series veteran Nobuo Uematsu, crafted a score that still to this day is praised as one of the greatest video game scores of all time.

This week Colin, Lucas, and Neal get festive since it’s that time of year and talk about something most gamers tend to…hate? That’s festive, right? …Anyway, this week’s episode introduces a new recurring episode format titled “On the Level”, where we shift the focus to a specific type of level in video games and talk about the aspects that we do and don’t enjoy about them. So to kick it off we’re talking about Ice/Winter levels! These levels can often employ some variation of ice physics which often serves to drive the player insane while trying to navigate them. BUT, they’re not all bad and we’ve also got some examples that stand out among the rest.

Listen to your mom and go get dressed, and don’t forget your baseball bat and trusty red cap because this week Colin, Lucas, and Neal explore the quirky cult classic RPG That One Game Earthbound for the Super Nintendo. Released in Japan on August 27 of 1994 and later in North America on June 5th of the following year, Earthbound centered around Ness and his group of 3 friends who have all been chosen to save the world from the pending destruction to be wrought by the evil Giygas, a terrifyingly enigmatic being from beyond the reaches of space and time.
Unlike many popular role-playing games of the era which preferred a more fantasy-inspired setting, Earthbound stood unique at the time by choosing to take place in the modern day country of Eagleland, inspired by the United States. The game utilizes this setting to great effect, offering a humorous satirical take on the American lifestyle.
While Earthbound was successful in Japan, it was not met with the same praise when it landed overseas, and the game in turn sold poorly. However, with the inclusion of Ness in the original Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo 64, a cult following gradually began to form and the game is now looked upon with high regard. Notably, the game received a sequel in 2006 on the Gameboy Advance, but for numerous reasons Nintendo never ported the game outside of Japan, and those wishing to play it have sought out translation mods instead.

This week Colin, Lucas, and Neal get a little spooky and take a look at the latest CG-animated Resident Evil movie - Resident Evil: Death Island - which was released over the summer. A direct sequel to Resident Evil: Vendetta, Death Island takes place in 2015 as Leon S. Kennedy of Resident Evil 2 and 4 fame finds himself tracking down a researcher and engineer by the name of Antonio Taylor who is guilty of selling sensitive information to foreign entities. Meanwhile, in following up with cases of their own, other series mainstays like Chris and Claire Redfield and Jill Valentine find themselves visiting Alcatraz, where they meet up with Leon and discover a much more sinister plot at play.
Upon release, the film received somewhat average reviews but was praised for its action scenes and the way it brought together an ensemble cast of the franchise’s most beloved characters.

In this episode, Colin, Lucas, and Neal travel to the 22nd Century with the legendary 1993 action-platformer Mega Man X. Rather than simply bringing the classic Blue Bomber into the 16-bit era, series creator Keiji Inafune decided a much more radical change was necessary and set the game 100 years after the events of the previous Mega Man games, and in doing so introduced a whole new cast of characters, like the titular protagonist X and fan-favorite Zero.
Gameplay in Mega Man X was still recognizable to veteran players with its initial 8-stage setup that could be completed in any order, but also made many changes to modernize the series for the new generation of hardware it debuted on. Throughout the game the player could find pieces of armor that augment X’s powers and sometimes grant new abilities, like gaining the ability to dash from the boots found in Chill Penguin’s stage. Additionally, X had the ability to scale walls via a wall jumping mechanic.
Upon release, Mega Man X was praised for its graphics, gameplay, and rockin’ soundtrack. It has since been ported forward to nearly every platform over the years, and is available on current consoles and PC thanks to the Mega Man X Legacy Collection.

This week, Colin, Lucas and Neal take a look at a game that was right at the forefront of the 2000’s indie game boom, That One Game: Cave Story.
Developed over the course of 5 years by lone developer Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, the game first released in Japan as freeware in 2004, and later seeing a worldwide release of sorts thanks to the unofficial translation made by the Aeon Genesis team in 2005. Praised as a love letter to classic exploration based games like Metroid, Cave Story was eventually was picked up by indie game publisher Nicalis to bring the game to the Wii, DSi, and 3DS. An enhanced version titled Cave Story+ was later released for PC, Mac, Linux, and Switch. Additionally, a full 3D remake was also released for the 3DS titled Cave Story 3D.
Gameplay consists of 2d action platforming with a variety of different weapons to add to the player's arsenal. Each weapon is also capable of upgrading up to two times, increasing its power and altering its firing pattern. Also of note is the game's addition of 3 different endings. One such ending, considered the true ending, is only possible if the player meets certain criteria throughout their playthrough, in addition to surviving an extremely difficult secret level and boss fight.

This Colin, Lucas, and Neal take a look at one of the most popular genres in modern gaming, Open World games. First rising to popularity throughout the 2000's thanks to games like Grand Theft Auto and The Elder Scrolls, Open World games are characterized by their massive sprawling maps with mostly, if not entirely seamless exploration throughout. These games often lean heavily on player freedom above anything else and can offer many different solutions to the challenges they present. Gameplay in Open World games can vary widely from the survival crafting focus of the mega-hit Minecraft, to super hero action games like 2018's Marvel's Spider-Man, or to full on action RPG's like the modern Assassin's Creed series.

On this episode, Colin, Lucas and Neal are joined by the podcast's first ever special guest, Max (whom you may recall from the Fire Emblem Engage Side Quest!) to take you 20,000 leagues under the sea as we explore the magnificent underwater metropolis of Rapture in the 2007 masterpiece, BioShock. Developed by Irrational Games and published by 2K, BioShock released on August 21 of 2007 to unanimous critical acclaim. The team behind the game was also responsible for 1999's System Shock 2, and it was developed as a spiritual successor of sorts.
In BioShock the player takes control of the character Jack, who stumbles upon Rapture by means of a oddly convenient plane crash. Upon his arrival Jack is quickly swept up in a fight for survival as he is lead along by a mysterious man by the name of Atlas in his quest to usurp Rapture from Andrew Ryan, the city's founder. The game takes place in a pseudo-futuristic version of the 1960's and gameplay consists of a combination of first person gunplay and special powers known as plasmids that the player collects throughout the city. Over the course of the game's 12 hour campaign the player is met with an onslaught of crazed Rapture residents known as Splicers, giant armored diving suit-wearing behemoths known as Big Daddies and the strange little girls they protect (referred to as Little Sisters), all while slowly discovering the events that lead up to Rapture's descent into madness and Jack's role in all of it.
BioShock is frequently referred to as one of the greatest games of all time and is a shining example in the argument for video games as pieces of art. Would you kindly join us as we dive into this fantastic game!

This week Mario Month concludes with a look at one of Mario's most beloved adventures, his Super Nintendo debut, That One Game: Super Mario World! And yes, we know this episode is going live on May 2nd, but we're recording it while it's still April so it's still Mario Month!
Released in Japan on November 21 of 1990, North America on August 18, 1991, Europe on April 11, 1992, and finally in Australia on July 1 of 1992, Super Mario World was a direct follow-up to Super Mario Bros. 3 and retained many similar features such as a world map and boss fights with the various Koopaling villains. However, probably more famously, this marked the series introduction to the lovable green dinosaur, Yoshi. Yoshi introduced multiple unique mechanics of his own, including the ability to eat enemies, and allowed Mario to ride on his back.
The game was met with unanimously positive critical acclaim at launch and still maintains that praise to this day. Be it the game's simple, easy to learn core design philosophy, or its incredibly catchy soundtrack scored once again by series veteran Koji Kondo, Super Mario World has truly stood the test of time and continues to be enjoyed decades after its release.

This week Colin, Lucas, and Neal introduce a new recurring episode theme where we pick a specific genre of games and have a discussion about it. And, to kick off Mario Month here on That One Gaming Podcast, we chose Mario's home genre, Platformers! Arguably one of the most popular game genres of the 8- and 16-bit eras of gaming - thanks in no small part to our favorite plumber in red - the object of most platform games is to move your character from the beginning of the level to the end, often times moving from left to right, while utilizing the ability to jump and climb to maneuver around obstacles. Once games entered the 3D era the genre would begin to ditch the left to right movement in favor of sprawling open zones for the player to explore.

This week Colin, Lucas, and Neal are back with the latest entry in our That One Game series, with the newest game to be featured in the series so far by quite a large margin - 2018's indie masterpiece Celeste. Recently celebrating its fifth anniversary, Celeste released to nearly unanimous critical acclaim, receiving praise for its difficult but forgiving gameplay and accessibility options, heartfelt story, fantastic score, and gorgeous pixel art.
In the game, you control Madeline, a young girl on a mission to climb Mt Celeste, only to find that the mountain is determined to fight back every step of the way. Throughout Celeste's 7 main story levels, Madeline must fight off her own insecurities - manafested in physical form as the character Badeline - and whatever else the mountain throws at her to succeed in her quest to reach the Summit.

WE'RE BACK! After an unexpectedly long hiatus, this week Colin, Lucas, and Neal sit down and discuss the first entry in one of the longest-running role-playing game franchises around, Final Fantasy. And to make things even more special, the date of recording for this episode - December 18, 2022, marks the series' 35th anniversary!
Designed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, Final Fantasy was developed as a swan song for the failing company Square, who were facing the possibility of bankruptcy in the late 80's after a string of unsuccessful releases. If the game were to fail, Sakaguchi had planned to leave the gaming industry, but as we know, the opposite would be true, and Final Fantasy would go on to become a smash hit in Japan, and also in the United States when it found its way over just a few years later.
Known for its innovative gameplay, fantastic musical scores by the great Nobuo Uematsu, grand adventures, and gripping storytelling, the Final Fantasy franchise has gone on to include 15 mainline entries with number 16 on the way in the summer of 2023, and a plethora of spin-offs. And with the coming year being its 35th anniversary, the series is showing no signs of slowing down.

This week Colin, Lucas, and Neal take you back to the past in an epic quest to save the world and banish the evil Ganon from existence. That's right, this week we're talking about That One Game - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Released in Japan on November 21st, 1991, North America on April 13, 1992, and later in European regions on September 24th of that year, A Link to the Past is the third game in the Zelda franchise, and marks the series' jump into the 16-bit era on Nintendo's Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
Helmed by the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto, this game returned to the top-down style popularized by the first game, while also serving to introduce many series mainstays such as the Master Sword, hook shot, spin attack, and probably most notably - parallel worlds. In this game the player is able to travel back and forth between Light and Dark Worlds - two opposite but fully realized worlds with their own unique characters, enemies, and dungeons. At the time such a feature was unprecedented and to this day it remains a showcase of the capabilities of the Super Nintendo hardware.

This week Colin, Lucas, and Neal are back with another of our That One Game episodes, with the game (or games in this case) in question being the much beloved second generation entries in the Pokemon series - Pokemon Gold and Silver versions. Released in Japan on November 21, 1999, North America on October 15, 2000, and later on April 6, 2001 in Europe, Pokemon Gold and Silver introduced players to the Johto region and its 100 completely new and unique Pokemon, putting the total number of Pokemon in the Pokedex up to 251. While the world may have been introduced to these lovable Pocket Monsters with Red, Blue and Green versions, it was this second generation that signified that Pokemon was here to stay (even if the developers did not necessarily intend that at the time).
So as always, a disclaimer for this episode: we have no intention of covering every little detail surrounding these games in this podcast. There is so much information out there outside of what we got with the final retail product that it would be near impossible to cover it all in the time we're given today. And also, just due to the nature of conversation, it's also entirely possible that we can, and will, just straight up forget to talk about something. We've tossed in a couple surprises here and there, but for the sake of brevity we've mostly limited our options to controllers that were included in box with its respective console at some point in time. Even still we've got a good 40 years of controllers to get through so let's just dive right in!
As far as ranking criteria, we've chosen to rank each controller from S to F
- S tiers are considered the greatest controllers of all time. They're always the first controller you reach for when given the option.
- A tiers are generally all-around good controllers but may have minor little nitpicks that hold them back from true greatness
- B tiers are pretty solid but you probably don't care to use them outside of the console they were made for
- C tiers are just plain middle-of-the-road controllers. They're not bad, but they're not great either
- D tiers are awkward and at times clunky to wield and don't do much to excite
- F tiers are abominations that make you scratch your head and wonder "What were the designers thinking?!"

Today on the show we'll be taking a look at what many consider to be the greatest Sonic the Hedgehog game ever made as we discuss That One Game - Sonic 3 & Knuckles! Sonic the Hedgehog 3 released for the Sega Genesis on February 2, 1994 in North America. Later that year, on October 18, Sonic & Knuckles would follow, and bring with it Sega's famous "lock-on" technology. This allowed certain games to be slotted into the top of the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge to unlock additional gameplay features. However, when Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was locked-on, the two games melded together into one single game, Sonic 3 & Knuckles! The game in this form is actually the original intended release for Sonic 3, but due to time constraints imposed by Sega, the game ended up being split into two parts.
In our discussion we talk about our favorite levels, music and more! Additionally we offer some thoughts on the recently released Sonic Origins as part of Sonic the Hedgehog's 31st anniversary celebration on the 23rd of June. This week we're back with another Magic the Gathering episode as Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate has officially launched over the weekend. It's a brand new set designed specifically for the Commander format that also is based in the world of Dungeons and Dragons. If last year's Adventures in the Forgotten Realms was the Dungeons, this set is certainly the Dragons as the Dragon tribe in particular has seen some massive new support this time around, and on this episode we'll be diving into our favorite cards from this set.

So not long ago a particular leak surfaced that showed off footage of Nintendo working in-house on a Gameboy and Gameboy Advance emulator for the Nintendo Switch. Through some due diligence among tech savvy members of the community, it has since been confirmed to be legitimate, and we now know (much to Nintendo's ire, I'm sure), that Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance games are going to be making their way to Nintendo Switch (most likely through Nintendo Switch Online) sometime in the future. It's no longer a question of IF, but WHEN.
And with that said, for today's discussion we're gonna be running down our top picks for games we hope show up on the service when Nintendo finally decides to roll it out! These can range from individual games to entire series'.
