Imagine yourself in a sphere of sound, not just the linear sonic information out of the left or right speakers or headphones, but all around you…how we receive the world every day. We frequently receive these subtle nuances in multi directional frequencies that vibrate through space that help us determine how we perceive the world around us. Sound can ground us in being present, move us through time or transport us to other parts of the world. It’s emotional, it’s personal and demands nothing short of a personal response. Everyday, natural sounds are being drowned out by human interaction, and disrupt how nature sonically communicates with us. Ambisonic Spaces is not just about exploring the world through sound, but to remind us how nature is meant to communicate with us, be conserved by us, and to protect the peace that it can provide.

Using Spatial Audio To Reduce Noise Pollution And Increase Wellbeing
Jelmer Althuis is the founder and audio director of The Sphere of Sound, a studio based in Haroldinga in the Netherlands. His work focuses on creating spatial audio environments for virtual reality, ehealth, metaphors applications, audio tours, and art exhibitions. Jelmer has had a lifelong fascination with music technology and production, and has experience playing multiple instruments and composing music on computers. In 2013, after working as a system integrator and helping build studios, he was exposed to virtual reality. This sparked his interest in creating 3D audio with hat tracking capabilities. Since then, Jelmer has dedicated himself to immersive audio recording and production techniques, and in 2020 he founded The Sphere of Sound.
The speaker is an audio producer specializing in spatial audio production for immersive experiences. In 2017, they joined the Fear Relax team as Audio Director, which uses the power of spatial audio to help people struggling with burnout or stress related symptoms. To fill their sound library, they go on the road and record with the Ambio Mic and a number of stereo sets, which are calibrated by Len Muskovich of Core Sound. To capture the best soundscapes, they look for places that are far away from roads, people, and airplanes. The speaker is passionate about creating soundscapes that help people feel telepresence and calm down.
The conversation discussed the psychological and physical effects of sound, as well as the problem of noise pollution. It was noted that noise pollution can lead to health problems such as stress and cognitive function disorder, and can even have an effect on marine life. It was suggested that sound effects and natural, realistic environments created by sound designers and field recordists can provide a way for people to escape from the current reality and experience a moment of peace. These sound designers travel around the world to capture and preserve areas of silence, creating a form of telepresence and metaphorse environments with no noise pollution.

Meet Melissa Pons, she is an award winning sound designer, sound artist, and field recordist. Melissa seeks context by being connected to the space and knowing it’s history, culture, geography, how it’s perceived, knowing the context so much that you’re willing to have it change your understanding. Having this transformative approach, allows the space to tell its own story, rather than us write the story, we’re more or less a conduit to share its story as is, all we have to do is listen.

At 8600ft, Guffey is a small mountain town which had its beginnings in the late 1800’s with its booming population of 500 bringing cattle ranching and lumber operations supplementing Guffey’s mining activity. Fast forward over one hundred years to today, just a few spread out ranchers occupy this area, or "share" this area with other creatures. These are their stories. In the Rocky Mountains, nestled in the Pikes Peak Region at 9000ft, are a series of reservoirs closed in by old, large pines, seasoned aspens and towering mountains. This is Catamount. These Catamount reservoirs are fed by a number of streams melted from winter’s freeze and bubbling up from natural springs provided by the sky scraping, 14,000 ft Pikes Peak, carving out a unique, high elevation eco system that provides a haven for a variety of wildlife. But according to local folklore and embellished mountain town newspapers, there’s something else out there more elusive than bobcats, and more mysterious than mountain lions. , something lumbering through the dense trees, watching through the foliage, making appearances in the distance, and broadcasting a sound that echos through the mountainous peaks and valleys. Meet John and Jill who have been living in this region for over a decade, and have some very unusual activity on their property. A little oasis that has a series of waterfalls that cascade down a mountain from a little hidden gem called the “garden of eden” in the Pikes Peak Region of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. It’s positioned in such a way that the golden hours of dawn and dusk just last a little bit longer, you are surrounded by green moss covering the giant boulders and rocks, and vegetation that is all tangled together reaching for the sunlight. The ambient temperature drops just a few degrees from the rushing water, and all you hear is... The Garo Hills are the youngest part of the Himalayas. This close to untouched region of the world sparked interest in Sound Artists, Nikhil Nagaraj, Felix Deufel and their team to create an interactive 3D re-creation of the most remote parts of India, that one day, may not sound the same due to human interactions and sound pollution. Their project is called "If We Vanish" and aims to show why it is critical to preserve the remaining natural soundscapes and empower us to hear the world's ecosystem differently. On a 40 day expedition through the Himalayas, the team captures 3D recordings of these remote environments to preserve, share and raise awareness of the impacts human generated noise brings. This recording provided by "If We Vanish" is the first of several that will be shared on Ambisonic Spaces. Imagine yourself in a sphere of sound, not just the linear sonic information out of the left or right speakers or headphones, but all around you…how we receive the world every day.
