How often do you go to the casino to play a little Blackjack or Poker, or sit around with friends playing cards? Did you know that at least 18 states in the U.S. use a special deck of cards to send out information on cold cases? These decks are called “Cold Case Playing Cards,” and each deck consists of 52 unsolved crime cases that authorities need help with solving. Many of the cases highlighted on the cards range from unsolved homicides to missing persons. Although there are hundreds of cases not highlighted in the playing cards distributed through the 18 states, investigators still feel this program is a gateway to gaining leads to close some of their files. In April 1895, a young women went missing and another was found mutilated deep inside the Emmanuel Baptist Church in San Francisco, CA, Police quickly arrived on the scene the day before Easter to begin looking for clues on who may have murdered Minnie Williams, who was discovered inside a closet within the church. As investigators worked their way through the crime scene, they eventually entered the belfry, where they discovered Blanche Lamonte, a second victim.
It did not take long before multiple witnesses came forward to chronicle Blanche's movement throughout San Francisco on April 3, 1895, the day she disappeared. Every one of these witnesses named Theo Durrant as the last known person to be seen with Blanche before they both entered Emmanuel Church.. Another witness also came forward to state that Theo also entered the church 10 days later. Neither woman was ever seen alive again.

Susan Preece was a four-year-old girl growing up in Pontegract, West Yorkshire, England, to a single mother in the 1960s. Although her mother did the best she could, she found it increasingly difficult to care for her children, and Susan's siblings found themselves in and out of foster care.
Susan's mother soon became fast friends with the Gervaises, a young couple who had recently moved into the same neighbourhood. Their friendship quickly blossomed, so it was no big deal when the couple asked to take Susan to America's popular vacation destination in Orlando, Florida. Susan's mother readily agreed, packed a bag, and sent Susan off with her birth certificate in hand. That was the last time she ever saw Susan again.
Over the next decade, Susan travelled with her "new" family, and eventually ended up in Australia. However, a paperwork error at the border led Susan to the discovery that she had been stolen as a small child, but it wasn't until 2020 that she found out her true identity.

William Leasure had it all during the 1970s. He held a career in law enforcement, was married to his sweetheart, Betsy, a city attorney in Los Angeles, California. Over the years, the duo became a power couple and life couldn't get much better than this!
As the years went on, William continued to support Betsy in her career. He built his corvette collection, and even hung out with his yachting buddies. Only things weren't exactly on the up and up. By 1986, Los Angeles detectives were hot on the trail of yacht thieves who were known to steal vessels up and down the California coast.
On May 29th of that same year, the LAPD decided to take a look around the Marina Bay Yacht Harbor in Richmond, just north of San Francisco. Imagine everyone's surprise when LA's finest glided into a slip on a stolen yacht! Mild Bill tried to backpedal and feign his innocence, but detectives weren't buying it. After a search warrant or two, William's "little black book" was discovered with a string of names and business dealings, which turned into a sinister web of deceit and murder.

After the interview, Dom and Kate help Deb out with a high-profile case out of Carnarvon, Australia, where on October 16, 2021, 4-year-old Cleo Smith was abducted from a popular campground in Western Australia. Over the next 18 days, police followed multiple tips to track down Terence Darrell Kelly, age 36, who lived only a short distance from Cleo and her family. On November 21, 2021, police raided Kelly's home, where they found little Cleo alive and unharmed. And when this happened, there was not a dry eye in the house!

On July 9, 1973, 16-year old Paul Getty made plans to hang out with friends at a local pizzeria. During the early morning hours of July 10, 1973, Paul began making his way back to his apartment when a car pulled up alongside him. A man asked if he was Paul Getty, and when he said yes, Paul was pulled into the car and knocked out with chloroform. What Paul didn't know is that his kidnappers had a plan to extort his grandfather for $17M dollars in ransom. Only things didn't go as planned. Paul Getty's grandfather, John Paul Getty, Sr., was not only an oil tycoon and one of the richest men in the world, but he was very eccentric and a shrewd businessman. He flat out refused to pay the ransom until five months later, when Getty Sr. and the kidnappers finally reached an agreement. Not allowing anyone to have the last word, however, Getty made the exchange, but not without strings attached.

On August 30, 1991, Dawn Elaine Sanchez was living at the Four Seasons Motor Lodge on the 4300 block of El Camino Real in Los Altos, CA. On this particular day, Dawn drove off in a tan and brown 1979 Pontiac Grand Prix, along with her boyfriend, Bernardo Bass and another acquaintance. She was never seen or heard from again. Dawn was reported missing 2 months later, but. by then it was too late. Police did the best they could during the investigation, but like many other cases, this one went cold.
In 2009, Dawn's case was reopened, only this time, NASA stepped in. Engineers just happened to have a roving ground vehicle available that was equipped to conduct magnetic surveys, and they covered an empty track of land where the car Dawn was in was said to have been dismantled and abandoned. This car was found, leading authorities to Dawn's boyfriend at the time. He eventually pleaded no contest to her disappearance, but to this day, Dawn has yet to be found.

In June 1979, a young white male's remains were discovered in greater San Francisco, CA with multiple shotgun wounds leading to his death. This victim was given the name John Doe #89 for the next 36 years. But here's the twist. It's not often that cases like this cross the path of an serial killer, where a victim can be identified by opening up old files from one of the most evil men alive.
Enter Sheriff Tom Dart, who in 2011 set out to bring the missing victims of John Wayne Gacy home to their loved ones. Sheriff Dart made a public plea for anyone to come forward with information on Gacy's missing victims. Believing that her brother fit the profile of Gacy's victims, Dr. Willa Wertheimer contacted Sheriff Dart submitted her DNA into CODUS, a federal DNA database that cross-references DNA with unidentified victims or unsolved cases. When the results came in, Dr. Wertheimer discovered that her brother was not one of Gacy's victims, but John Doe #89 who was discovered in San Francisco.

On December 26, 1980, Sandra DeFelice was discovered deceased in her own bed around 9:30 PM. Earlier that day, Sandra's roommate had a visitor who asked to crash on the girl's couch for the day, but was denied. The roommate had escorted this person out of the house on her way to work, and thought nothing more about it. Fast forward to February 2021 where police closed in on Sandra's murderer after fingerprints were left behind at the crime scene. The perpetrator in question turned out to be Paul Nuttal, a 21-year old drifter who was never connected to the case until a modern DNA analysis took place. Between August and November in 1888, an ominous figure swept the streets of East London, preying upon women who were down on their luck. It was during this time that an unidentified man - or woman - stalked the streets in the early morning hours, looking for their next unsuspecting victim. Mary Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddies, and Mary Kelly were all positively identified as the five victims of Jack the Ripper, but some say there were more. As quickly as they occurred, the murders ended abruptly, but not before Jack left a bloody trail of carnage in his path. Through DNA technology, investigators now believe they know the identity of Jack the Ripper, but simply cannot say for sure. Unless there are more viable clues, it is likely this case will never be solved.

On May 30, 2015, 38-year-old Karen Bosta made plans to go out with her friend. She had two options: Go to an Elizabeth City just north of Perquimins County, NC, or go to Edenton, NC just south. She chose Edenton, a sleepy sea-side community with good restaurants and a quiet atmosphere. Karen ran errands around town, but after leaving a local grocery store, she was never seen or heard from again. The very next day, a person of interest was caught on CCTV using her Karen's credit card to make purchases at a local gas station.

Throughout the early decades of the 20th century, a young woman by the name of Amelia Earhart set out to do the impossible. The Wright Brothers had opened up the world to aviation, and Amelia was the one to push herself to the limits, breaking records to establish what we know as air travel today. Amelia spent the better part of her adult life traveling around the globe, documenting the effects of air travel on the human body, plus chartering the capabilities of early aircrafts by cataloging record-breaking altitudes and distances around the globe.On On 2 July 1937, Amelia and her navigator, Fred Noonan, finalized their flight path for the journey of a lifetime. Amelia knew this would be her last trip around the world before decidedly planning to hang her aviator jacket up for good when she was done. But fate had other plans. On 3 July 1937, at 08:43 AM, Amelia made her last radio transmission on her flight progress, and was never heard from again. To this day, scientists do not have a clear understanding of what went wrong or what happened to Amelia and her navigator. Some mysteries are never meant to be solved, But in this case, we have Amelia to thank for traveling the distance in air travel. During the early morning hours of April 16, 2007, shots rang out on the Virginia Tech campus located in Blacksburg, Virginia. All went quiet for around two hours, until something just as sinister occurred across campus. Seung-Hui Cho, an underclassman who suffered from mental health issues, had just committed a series of murders at West Ambler Johnston Hal Dormitory before making his way to Norris Hall, where class was currently in session. Cho killed 32 students and faculty members that day after planning out in intricate detail what he wished to accomplish. He barricaded all exit doors at Norris Hall by placing chains and locks on them before making his way to the second and third floors. Many who were attending class fought back, but not before Cho left a blazing trail of destruction in his wake.

On October 22, 2003, newlyweds Gabe and Tina Watson signed up for a diving excursion in the Coral Sea, located off the coast of Australia. Tina was a novice diver who qualified for the trip after 11 dives, while Gabe was an expert rescue diver with 55 dives under his belt. The couple prepped their gear and planned their decent, then made their way down to the shipwrecked SS Yongala, a 350=foot ship that sunk off the Coral Sea in 2001, It is not clear what happened next, but within the first hour of diving, Tina drowned. Based on numerous accounts from eyewitnesses and Gabe himself, it is not clear if any wrongdoing occurred. On August 28, 2003, 46-year-old Brian Wells walked into a PNC bank in Erie, PA, walked up to a teller, grabbed a lollipop, and demanded $250,000 in cash. In 2014, Ruja Ignatova, an Oxford University law grad, founded a digital currency company called OneCoin. This witness had just discovered the lifeless body of 22-year old Elizabeth Short, a woman who had gone missing the day before as she was on her way to meet her sister, Elizabeth had been brutally murdered, while her body was severely mutilated beyond comprehension. She was quickly labeled the "Black Dahlia" by the news media, due to similar comparisons between her lifestyle and the plot of a popular movie at the time. Elizabeth's murder remains unsolved today and to be honest, it may never be solved.

You've heard that D2BF is a family thing. So let's introduce you to Corey, Deb's son who gives a man's perspective on some of our true crime episodes. Today, Deb tells Corey the story of D.B. Cooper.
On November 24, 1971, a man walked up to the ticket counter for Northwest Orient Airlines out of Portland, OR, identified himself as Dan Cooper, and paid cash for a 1-way ticket to Seattle, WA. While he waited for the plane to take off, Cooper lit a cigarette, ordered a bourbon and soda on Northwest Airlines flight #305, and soon let the flight attendant know his demands. Once those demands were met, the flight continued onto its next leg, and Cooper jumped out of the airplane never to be seen again. To this day, D.B. Cooper is the most sought after criminal in U.S. history. However, in 2016, the FBI officially closed this case to to lack of evidence to locate this hijacker. But that doesn't mean the mystery doesn't continue.

Over the next 18 days, police followed multiple tips to track down Terence Darrell Kelly, age 36, who lived only a short distance from Cleo and her family. On November 21, 2021, police raided Kelly's home, where they found little Cleo alive and unharmed. And when this happened, there was not a dry eye in the house!

However, they were both exonerated and a new suspect was arrested and convicted in Meredith's murder.

On May 25, 1979, six-year-old Etan Patz talked his mother into allowing him to walk to the bus stop all by himself for the very first time. The bus stop was only two blocks away from his apartment in Manhattan, NY, and it was the last day of school before the long holiday weekend. Just before 8:00 AM, Etan's parents handed him a dollar to buy a soda at the corner deli, and out the door he went. However, when Etan failed to return home from school that day, his parents immediately called the police to report their missing son. For the next 33 years, Etan's case went cold, and he became the very first picture of a missing child to be placed on milk cartons nationwide. Finally, in May 2012, a tipster called in with information that would blow this case wide open.

It's our season finale, ya'll! This week we bring you the story of Jaycee Lee Dugard, an 11-year-old girl who was abducted on June 10, 1991 as she walked to her bus stop. Jaycee was held captive over the next 18 years by registered sex offender, Phillip Garrido, plus his wife, Nancy. Jaycee was well-hidden in a primitive area deep inside the backyard and it was not until August 25, 2009 when two keen-eyed police officers took notice of the odd behaviours from a group lingering around a University campus. They placed a call to Phillip's parole officer, who promptly called him in to the parole office the next day. This is the moment that everyone had waited for. Jaycee went with him and told authorities exactly who she was. Be sure to tune in to hear this touching story of events!

Chandra Ann Levy had a lot going for her. She was in her last semester of classes at the University of Southern California (USC) and just completed her internship with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons. Chandra was tying up loose ends in Washington, DC when on May 1, 2001, she simply disappeared. As she prepared to leave DC and head back to California, Chandra closed her gym membership, called her landlord to give notice, then headed out to a local park...or so authorities believe. From there, no one ever saw Chandra again until her remains discovered by a hiker/jogger at that park just one year later.

During the evening hours of May 13, 2008, Brandon Swanson met up with friends to celebrate the completion of his first year of college. In the early morning hours of May 14th, Brandon made his way home but drove into a ditch on the way there. He acted quickly by calling his parents to come rescue him, but it was not as easy as that. Brandon seemed confused about his whereabouts as his parents drove around aimlessly in search of their son. At around 3:10 AM, Brandon ultimately began a cross-country trek towards what he thought was home. But as fate would have it, he never made it. While on the phone with his dad, the call abruptly came to an end and Brandon has not been seen or heard from since.

On April 29, 1989, Bob Pelley, his wife, and two step-daughters were discovered murdered in their home after Bob failed to show up for work as a pastor. Two of Bob's biological children and one step daughter were at other functions away from home that night. Police took particular interest in the oldest Pelley child, Jeff (17), who attended his high school prom the night his family was murdered, then hung out with friends at the local theme park the next day. Police did not have enough evidence to arrest Jeff for his family's murders in 1989, but detained him 13 years later. Jeff was arrested, tried and found guilty of four counts of murder. Carl "Coral" Eugene Watts was a typical kid until the time he contracted meningitis and polio as a child. Or so they say. Throughout his 20's the attacks continued, and Carl estimated that he killed over 80 victims in Michigan and Texas, US. But it doesn't stop here. During his reign of terror, Carl made his way to Windsor, Ontario, Canada, leaving two more women in his wake. Between 1974 and 1982, this monster was dubbed the "Sunday Morning Slasher" because of the hours he attacked. It wasn't until his last victim took all her courage to get help and in a blink of an eye, Watts was off the streets. In February 1957, a young boy was discovered inside an abandoned box in the woods near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Many clues were left behind, including a blue corduroy hat, a handkerchief, and information on the box itself. Police followed every possible lead, but 65 years later, they are no closer to finding John Doe's identity. What happens from here is a family's worst nightmare. Molly had disappeared without a trace. Three years, later, her remains were discovered a short distance from where she was last seen. Multiple suspects have been identified in this case, but an arrest has yet to be made in Molly's abduction and murder. In 1985, two deceased females were found inside a 55-gallon drum in the middle of the woods inside New Hampshire's Bear Brook State Park. Police worked diligently to identify these two victims, but years went by without any real clues. Fifteen years later, two more female victims were found, also inside a 55-gallon drum, and very close to where the first discovery was made. Although police determined both cases were related, it would still be more than another decade before they could figure out who these four victims were. Join Deb and Beth as we take a journey to New Hampshire and try to peace together with the timeline of events leading up to not only their identity but the suspect behind this case.

However, this was not the case in the DC Beltway back in 2002. Between October 2-22 of that year, John Allen Muhammed and his companion Lee Boyd Malvo executed violent attacks by using sniper tactics against local citizens in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia areas.
