Hey survivors, it's your girl, Abby Ayoola-Williams, and in our latest episode of How to Survive Society, we had an incredibly enlightening conversation with Nathan Riley, an OBGYN who's passionate about natural childbirth and empowering women through their birthing experiences.
Nathan shared his journey from being a latchkey kid in Pittsburgh to becoming a doctor who challenges the status quo of the medical industry. He opened up about his childhood, his parents' work ethic, and how his upbringing fostered a sense of independence that later influenced his career choices.
We dove deep into the world of childbirth, discussing the over-medicalization of the process and the importance of reducing unnecessary interventions. Nathan's experiences in Malawi and his exposure to different birthing practices shaped his philosophy on childbirth, leading him to advocate for a more natural and less interventionist approach.
He also touched on the systemic issues within the healthcare system, particularly the disparities faced by women of color. Nathan's commitment to change is evident as he works alongside midwives and offers an alternative to the often impersonal and intervention-heavy hospital births.
In addition, Nathan introduced us to the Born Free Method, an upcoming course designed to empower and educate expectant parents on their birthing options, emphasizing autonomy and informed decision-making.
As a mother who has experienced both hospital and home births, I found Nathan's insights incredibly valuable. We discussed the importance of saying "no" when something doesn't feel right and the need for parents to trust their intuition when it comes to their children's health.
This episode was a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience of all the mothers out there, and the importance of advocating for a birthing experience that aligns with one's values and needs. For more on this topic and to access resources that can help you navigate your birthing journey, head over to howtosurvivesociety.com.
Until next time, keep surviving and thriving, and remember, you have the power to make decisions that are right for you and your family.

Victoria has never let circumstances stand in her way. Growing up in an abusive home until she was removed and later adopted, Victoria's childhood was filled with abuse, sexual assault, and physical violence. But none of that has stopped her. Victoria has overcome tremendous odds to pursue a life of corporate success and leadership. It's easy to let our circumstances stand in our way. But we don't have to.
Circumstances of our past only rob us of our future if we let them. Victoria chose not to let her circumstances be her excuses.
Unstoppable
By age 24, Victoria was offered her first executive role with a large, dynamic and fast paced organization. Yes, that's dreadfully young to have such accountability and responsibility. It was her tenacity of spirit, her confidence that she could do the job, and her grit to see that she could rise to the occasion, empowered by the leaders around her that led to her success.

lan is an author, speaker, and business advisor. His humanitarian and environmental values were shaped by the landscapes of Minnesota during his youth. Then, a single, mystical experience transformed his life at the age of 24. A decade of spiritual immersion, substance abuse recovery, and self-discovery followed revealing a fundamental truth: reviving ourselves is the only path to reviving the planet.
lan believes that in order to address the grand challenges of our time, we need individuals to do their own deep internal work. When this happens, people can lead with their own unique genius.
This is why lan's professional work utilizes 3 central tenants: process optimization, wellbeing integration, and environmental restoration. For individuals and organizations, there are foundational principles that create an efficient and effective platform for optimization and wellbeing integration. With that foundation in place, we are better able to address grand challenges such as social inequality and climate change.

Painful Joy, published in April 2022 and available on Amazon, represents five years of intensive research in the U.S., Poland, Sweden, Israel and Germany, by author Max Friedman, as he seeks to unearth and understand the real life stories of his parents, Sam and Frieda, two poor Polish Jews. In the process he discovers their roots, recreates their lives and times and uncovers both their remarkable journeys and painful secrets. Part memoir, part genealogical mystery and part history, the book is an absorbing, heartwarming and, at times, heartbreaking saga as readers accompany the author on his extraordinary exploration of the complicated relationship between two Holocaust survivors who meet in Sweden after their liberation from Bergen-Belsen, and experience the "painful joy" of a love too often touched by death. It explores questions of survival, the ability to reimagine memories in order to deal with the truth, and what it was like growing up in a world that was never to be "normal."

From being a former drug addict and divorced in late twenties to a pastor to losing his 17- year-old son in a tragic plane crash to inspiring people to be courageous humans. Clint have lived a very layered life. At 12 years old he faced living with a mother that suffered from suicidal ideation, which on two occasions almost cost him his own life. During his 20-year marriage together, Clint and his wife Amárillys have experienced a miscarriage and two sons born prematurely (Gabriel at 3 lbs 12 ozs & Liam at 1 lb 14 ozs) because of her life (and theirs) being threatened by a pregnancy disease. While giving birth to their middle son Joel, she had another close call as she had great difficulty waking up from the anesthesia. There have been many other scary moments and setbacks. There have also been some amazing experiences and victories!
All of these challenges helped prepare Clint for the greatest blow of losing his oldest son to tragedy. There are foundational mindsets, values, and character traits he have lived by that have empowered him (and his family) to be resilient and thrive again no matter what life throws at them.
Clint's mission is to develop Courageous Humans that desire to live Inspiring Lives!

Sean is a 38 year old husband and father of three young children. He has worked as a construction electrician and as a volunteer firefighter for 20 years and was certain he had become the person he was supposed to be. A bi-product of the industries he worked in, influenced by generations of tough, masculine, dominant men, it was his belief that he couldn't do anything to change it. It wasn't until he started to challenge himself to be different and to allow new things into his life that he hadn't tried before, did he find that he wasn't stuck. He could be a more positive person, a better friend, nicer to himself and leave an aging mindset behind. Sean's first step was to take a break from drinking alcohol and has described this in his new book called Going Dry - My Path to Overcoming Habitual Drinking. In his book, he describes how journaling became his best tool, how we think more about the things we are doing or drinking than the people around us and what worked for him to get through some of the hardest moments he would face.

Isabella Young (B.Ed., M.Ed. Pre.) studied and taught Physical Education, Outdoor Education, Health, and Exercise Physiology to undergraduate and postgraduate students in Victoria, Australia. She was a pioneer in the establishment, development, and research of therapeutic Outdoor Education programs in Australia, and a founder of Out Doors Inc. (www.outdoorsinc.org.au), a non-profit organization that has provided outdoor adventure and recreation programs for people with poor mental health since 1987.
In 1994, while completing a Ph.D. and lecturing in Outdoor Education, personal tragedy struck. At 33, widowed, pregnant, and with a three-year-old son, Isabella began her own healing journey that has spanned three decades. She has crisscrossed three continents under three different names, undertaking pilgrimages, retreats, shamanic journeys, and vision quests; living in the wilderness and in ashrams, including eight years in a messianic cult as the wife of the “guru,” who took the life of her son to prevent being exposed as a pedophile, a rapist, a thief, and a con man. Her son’s murder broke her free from cult brainwashing, and she escaped to Hawaii. Through her relentless devotion to heal, free her mind, and discover the Truth, Isabella is now free from suffering and enjoying life immersed in the natural beauty of Kauai, writing, swimming, growing food, and going barefoot.
Isabella is the author of Putting on the Armor of God: A survival handbook for the Great Awakening and the Future of Humanity, which is essential reading to understand that humanity and the organic evolution of our species is under attack and that we need to be connected to our Divine nature, Nature, and each other to ensure our health, well-being, the freedom and future of humanity.

John had an intensely neurotic upbringing on the Upper West Side of Manhattan that left him with the best and the worst that the neighborhood has to offer: extreme cultural acumen and a ton of intergenerational pain, resrespectively
He lived in New Orleans from the age of 18-32, first in college and then wallowing on-and-off in the degenerate filth of that city's service industry: a localized hell of drugs, alcohol, hook- ups, broken dreams and lack of commitment.
He spent years in his 20s traveling the world, working on sustainable local agriculture projects. This gave him a deep and abiding love for local food, food systems, and alternative ways of living and being. It was also a way for him to run from his problems (fun fact: one can never run from that which they carry within themselves).
-In late 2020 he went through a horrendous breakup after his fiancée came out as a lesbian. This drove him to the absolute PIT of temporary pleasure-seeking, and was the catalyst for him to, after a period of intense pain, turn his life around.
-Since getting healthy he has established a citywide food rescue program that currently feeds thousands of families a week with edible but unsalable food donations that would otherwise be thrown out. This is an extension of his love for self and his drive to heal his own system: healing a broken food system.
He experienced an apartment fire on August 1, 2022. This was a massive blessing in disguise-- by stripping him of "everything", He learned that, with the proper perspective, nothing of value can ever be taken from us, because what is truly valuable are our internal assets. Following the fire, he didn't skip a beat with his program, either.
Jon have found that coaching others is THE GREATEST FEELING IN THE WORLD. There is NO GREATER HIGH (and this is from so

Born into the political and cultural quiescence of the 1950's, Jon Melrod grew up in apartheid-like Washington D.C. Active in the student movement that opposed the Vietnam War and a supporter of Black liberation, Jon embraced the ideology that the working class held the power to radically transform society. He left the campus for the factory in 1972. For thirteen years he immersed himself in the day- to-day struggles of Milwaukee's working class, both on the factory floor and in the political arena.
Despite FBI and Milwaukee Police "Red Squad" interference, Jon organized a militant rank-and-file caucus and rose through the union ranks to a top leadership position in UAW local 72. After a mass workforce cutback imposed by AMC's joint venture partner French automaker Renault, he left to attend Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco in 1985. Graduating cum laude with a JD, he opened a law firm in San Francisco successfully representing hundreds of political refugees.
In 2004, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given only six months to a year to live. Determined to overcome the illness, he marshalled both western and alternative treatments and, despite the odds, survived the deadly disease. After 13-year-old Andy Lopez was gunned down by a Sonoma County deputy sheriff, he reupped his bar membership and jumped back into the struggle against police violence.
In 2019, he married Filipina actress and human rights activist Maria Isabel Lopez and became politically active in the movement to defend the ancestral lands of the persecuted indigenous peoples of the Philippine archipelago who are under attack by the army at the behest of foreign logging and mining interests. He has also become active in the human rights struggle defending imprisoned Filipino political prisoners.

I embrace "eclectic spirituality"; for me, that incorporates concepts and practices from Tibetan Buddhism to pantheism and Taoism. My spiritual mentor from about twenty years ago promoted Oneness, which I still follow. She believes Essence is the powers and unites us.

Looking back on his life, Soslan can see how God has impacted his life so many times and how his experiences strengthened his faith and made him walk with God even closer. He was born in Russia and surrendered to an orphanage at birth. His birth records documented that he was likely a product of rape. Over the years, He spent time at the Vladikavkaz Russia orphanage until 2006. From what he can recall, there were over 40 plus children (majority of them were under the age of two) in that orphanage, with only two ladies in their late 70s; were the sole caregivers in the orphanage, many of whom were babies. During those eight and half years, it was necessary to go into the streets and search for garbage to survive. He was undernourished, beaten, and sexually assaulted several times. Russia was at war with Georgia, and the Russian police and military were constantly present throughout Vladikavkaz. Since he was the oldest in the orphanage, his duty was to stand in the long lines to receive half of the bread and a pail of water; the bread he received was very doughy, and the water was taken out of the river that flowed through the city. Since the half loaf bread wasn't enough, he would go out scavenging for food, and the Russian police and military would frequently catch him, beat him, and sexually assault him. When a family, "Steve and Jenny Newell " from Bend, Oregon, came to Russia to adopt one girl. When the Newell arrived at the orphanage, they were asked to take as many kids as possible. The Newells were about mid-'40s, nor had any experience with children. Among the three boys, I was one of them that came to America along with two girls. Lucky he was adopted because two hours later after he left, the orphanage was bombed by Georgia, killing everyone. He knows that God was watching over him and has a plan. As a result of going to America, He

Marie unexpectedly lost her husband and father to their two boys in June 2018 to a brain aneurysm. Using her own tools and strong intuition, she found and created her way back to Happiness in a way that now ripples massive impact on a soul level around the world.
Marie wrote a book about her experience of moving to Australia, meeting, marrying and losing Rob, and how she coped and found empowerment throughout her journey. She has since founded a Movement with the same title as her book "Loving Life after Loss". With empathy and understanding, she gently picks up her clients from where they are at - with a whole lot of respect for their very unique journey. There is no "one size fits all" approach when it comes to Loss. Yet there is a stigma around grief that she peels back, layer for layer, to not get entangled in other's expectations and honour your own needs and space.
Marie will offer you a different perspective on life, Love and grief and leave you with choices that are yours to make.

At the end of hi bull riding days, he was encouraged by many to announce rodeos. He picked up the microphone and discovered he loved how he could influence a crowd. Announcing allowed him to voice commercials for two different radio stations as an in house voice talent. He then started his own show that was syndicated on stations in Missouri, Arkansas, Kanas, and Oklahoma. Bottom line, COLLIN LOVE USING HIS VOICE.
