In this episode we talk about the four major groups of podcastable stories: structured, serial, collections and unstructured or experimental. We then talk about plot and when audiences expect a plot to be resolved versus when it's okay to leave it open ended. After that we take a quick dive into 23 ideas you can use to start writing a story podcast. From novels, to new hired classes and everything in between, my goal for this episode is to provide the raw materials for you to brainstorm and select the type of story hook or construct you'd like to use for your story ideas.
Okay, stick with me, we can do it! This episode takes a look at the 7 things you'll need to actually launch your story based podcast. I'll cut to the chase and list them here and then you can get more explanation, context and thoughts by listening to this episode. You'll need: a story idea, voice, a microphone (optional), editing software (optional), a place to upload your audio file to, a service that will update your podcast feed text document and you'll need to tell podcasting services, like Apple Podcasts, about your new show.
Items 5 and 6 are a little technical, I do my best to walk through with a balance of what's happening behind the scenes and what a storyteller actually needs to know or worry about. In 20 minutes we cover a college class worth of information and I hope you find it useful and encouraging.
