In this episode, Jamie and Tom from CabChat join us for a lively discussion about the complex world of taxi and ride-hailing ownership. We take a closer look at who really owns who, exploring the relationships between Lyft, Gett and FREENOW, and asking whether Geely’s involvement in the industry is creating a new landscape for licensed taxis. We also examine the connections between Curb and Uber, and whether Curb could be seen as "Uber through the back door." The conversation then turns to one of the most debated topics in the trade today: what makes an iconic taxi vehicle? Is it heritage, design, practicality, driver appeal, passenger experience, or simply what the public recognises as a true cab? We discuss the traditional London taxi, the latest generation of purpose-built cabs, and whether newer entrants to the market can ever achieve iconic status. A thought-provoking episode packed with industry insight, opinion, and plenty of debate for taxi drivers, Knowledge students, and anyone interested in the future of the trade. Topics covered: Lyft's ownership of Gett and FREENOW Geely's influence in the taxi industry The relationship between Curb and Uber Competition and consolidation in the taxi and ride-hailing market What defines an iconic taxi vehicle? In today’s podcast, we’re joined by Paul Byron (HP Taxis) and Trevor Merralls (United Cab Drivers Group) for a straight-talking discussion on one of the biggest issues facing the trade right now.

From their perspective, the current regulations that define London taxis — including turning circle and vehicle specifications — should remain firmly in place. They explain why they believe allowing the new Ford Maxicab could fundamentally change the identity of the London taxi.

We also dive into what they’re hearing behind the scenes about the next generation of taxis, including insights and trade rumours surrounding the upcoming LEVC model set to replace the TXE.

💬 Expect strong opinions, insider knowledge, and a proper debate from both sides of the argument.

London’s taxi industry could be facing a major change…

In this episode, Dean Warrington and co-host David Frampton sit down with Peter Fecenna from Allied Vehicles (Maxi Cab), alongside Grant Davis from the London Cab Drivers Club (LCDC), to discuss the push to bring a Ford taxi into the London market.

At the centre of the debate is one critical issue: Should the strict turning circle requirement be removed?

This rule has defined what a London taxi is for decades — but is it still necessary, or is it holding the industry back?

We get into:

Why Allied Vehicles want the rules changed

What the turning circle requirement really means in practice

The potential impact on drivers, passengers, and the identity of the black cab

The concerns from within the trade

Whether this is progress… or a step too far

This is a conversation every London cab driver — and anyone interested in the future of the trade — needs to hear.

🎧 Podcast Intro

Today we’re joined by an incredible young guest who might just represent the future of the London black cab trade.

At only 20 years and 8 months old, he’s completed The Knowledge of London – making him one of the youngest people ever to do it. In fact, he finished so early that he can’t even receive his badge until he turns 21.

Originally from Uganda and living in the UK for just four years, his journey is nothing short of remarkable. With a cab driver father guiding him, and his brother as his Knowledge partner, he’s shown what determination, family support, and hard work can achieve.

But that’s not all — he’s also studying at university, has a passion for acting, and shares some brilliant insights into why doing The Knowledge young can be such a huge advantage.

This is a story about ambition, family, discipline, and the next generation of cab drivers.

🎙️ Podcast Intro Script

Welcome back to the podcast — today we’ve got a brilliant and inspiring guest with us… John Kendall, better known by many in the trade as “Ronseal” — and if you’ve ever seen his famously permanent brown tan, you’ll understand exactly why that nickname stuck. 😄

John’s story is a proper one. Before completing the Knowledge of London, he was already out there working the streets as a Yellow Badge driver, and before that he spent years behind the wheel of a lorry, so driving has always been in his blood.

But John’s journey hasn’t just been about learning runs and calling points. He’s also overcome some serious personal challenges along the way. John has a stammer, which meant he was given additional time in his Knowledge appearances — but he still stood there, did the work, and got it done.

And if that wasn’t enough, he also made a huge life change for his health. John travelled to Turkey to have surgery that removed most of his stomach in order to lose weight. The transformation has been incredible — going from a super-large bloke to a normal-sized man, completely changing his lifestyle in the process.

So today we’re going to talk about the Knowledge, determination, setbacks, health changes, life on the road, and what it really takes to keep pushing forward when things aren’t easy. This is the story of John “Ronseal” Kendall — and trust me, this one’s worth listening to.

Let’s get into it.

This is an honest, insightful and thought-provoking conversation about ambition, resilience, neurodiversity, and the realities of studying the Knowledge. Whether you’re considering starting the Knowledge, currently on the journey, or just interested in different learning experiences, this episode offers a fascinating perspective.

In this episode, Dean sits down with Daniel Bowry for a candid and insightful conversation about his journey into the world of the Knowledge of London. Daniel opens up about his decision to leave a career as a professional chef and make the bold switch to becoming a cab driver, sharing the challenges, motivations, and realities behind such a major life change.

He discusses his experience working as a Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) driver, explaining why, in his view, it isn’t the ideal position when trying to study and complete the Knowledge — from time pressures to distractions and the practical difficulties of balancing work and study.

Daniel also reflects on the powerful influence of his late grandfather, who was a London cabbie, and how his legacy played a key role in inspiring Daniel to pursue and ultimately complete the Knowledge himself.

🎙️ Knowledge Boy Chronicles – Episode: Stephen Shine In this episode of The Knowledge Boy Chronicles, we sit down with Stephen Shine, a man whose life story redefines resilience, service, and determination.

Stephen is currently studying The Knowledge, but his journey here has been anything but ordinary. A former bus driver, carer for children with special needs, and British Army veteran, Stephen served in Afghanistan driving a Challenger 2 tank, where he survived being hit by two IEDs. As a result of his service, he lost his leg and lives with PTSD.

Despite already working for Transport for London as a bus driver, Stephen was initially refused entry onto The Knowledge, with TFL stating that this decorated war hero was not a “fit and proper person” to drive a taxi.

With the support of the UCG (United Cabbies Group), that decision was challenged — and overturned.

Now, Stephen begins his journey toward earning the coveted Green Badge, adding it to a lifetime of hard-earned medals and achievements.

This is a conversation about:

Service and sacrifice

Fighting bureaucracy

Mental health and perseverance And what it truly means to never give up

🎧 Should London Taxis Have Fixed Fares to Heathrow? | London Taxi Podcast In this episode of our London Taxi Podcast, we tackle a big question for the trade: 👉 Should there be fixed fares for London Taxis travelling to and from Heathrow Airport? 💬 The argument for fixed fares: Passengers might be more likely to choose a black cab if they know the price upfront. It could help compete with app-based services like Uber and Bolt. Most other major cities around the world already offer fixed airport fares. ⚠️ The argument against: It could mean losing hotel doormen who earn commission for arranging taxis. Drivers might lose flexibility and earnings potential. It could blur the lines between licensed taxis and private hire vehicles (PHV) in London. Join us as we debate the pros and cons, look at how other cities manage airport fares, and ask what this change could mean for the future of the London Taxi trade. 📍 In this episode: Why fixed fares could attract new passengers The risk of losing hotel partnerships How London compares to other global cities What drivers and passengers really think The future of black cabs in an app-driven market 🎙️ Listen now and have your say in the comments below! #LondonTaxi #BlackCab #HeathrowAirport #TaxiPodcast #FixedFare #TaxiDrivers #LondonCabbie #TransportLondon #PHV #TaxiTrade #TaxiIndustry #HeathrowTaxi #LondonCabs Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCC92MPgJX5sUON85DjKLrpA/join

Alex White is a remarkable software and database developer whose journey is a testament to perseverance, innovation, and belief in possibility. Despite being diagnosed with ME and later with Autism and ADHD, Alex took on one of the toughest intellectual challenges imaginable — The Knowledge. Driven not by ego but by curiosity and determination, Alex discovered early on that The Knowledge isn’t about being the smartest person in the room — it’s about getting on with it. As he often reflected, “the smarter people tended to overthink it. Time on the bike, time in front of the map — that’s what really counts. Calling runs builds fluency, revising points keeps the information fresh. Everything else is just a distraction.” That grounded wisdom became the foundation of something extraordinary. While studying, Alex and I worked closely to reimagine how The Knowledge could be learned. Together, we built WizApps — a pioneering app-based learning system that revolutionised the way students study. By blending technology with the hard-earned insights of real experience, we created tools that helped thousands of learners stay focused, motivated, and better equipped to tackle the journey ahead. Through his resilience and vision, Alex didn’t just transform his own learning experience — he changed the landscape of The Knowledge for everyone who followed. His story reminds us that innovation is born not only from brilliance, but from persistence, humility, and the courage to keep moving forward when the road seems impossibly long.

The merit system is by far & away the fairest & most favourable system to have. Technology could be astounding & still not solve who should get a badge.
