Recently, I have been getting many messages and questions around what to do about the slower summer season. The month of July, and the first half of August, is always a slower and more hectic time for many solo facialists out there. It is the nature of the beast; this period comes every year, and this year is no different. But what do we do when clients start cancelling and rescheduling last minute? What do we do when scheduling becomes a little hectic and there are holes in our schedule that are usually not there? Today I share with you my top tips on how to address those problems, but most important of all, I give you the strategies that will allow you to take full advantage of the slower summer season.

Today, I share with you the top things you can let go of as solo facialists. Those things are often what we think we should be doing, but they don't really matter to us as solos. As a solo, your energy is the most important aspect of your business! It is very important to pay attention to what energizes you and what drains you. What feels hard and what feels easy to you? Too often, I see facialists hanging on to things that are weighing them down and prevent them from going forward. When we say we are stuck, often it is because we are holding onto things that are no longer serving us. In this episode, we are going to go over the top 3 of them that I see most frequently within a solo facialist business!
Today we are talking about a topic that has a lot of influence in the esthetics industry in general, but more so for solo practitioners, because oftentimes we are alone in our business and thoughts tend to creep in more easily. In this episode, I’m sharing about the wounded feminine energy and how it shows up in our lives. I reveal 5 signs of wounded feminine energy and 7 pieces of advice on how to better manage not only the wounded feminine, but energy in general in your business.
Today's episode is about the big things that are happening in this space that I have been hinting at for the past two weeks, and the shift that will be taking place starting at episode 50 (next week). Today's topic is about self-care and the ego. Now, when we hear “ego”, we tend to think of it in a negative way, but in this episode, I talk about the concept of ego within ourselves, that we all have, which means the organized part of us. It’s that realistic agent that mediates between the instinctual desires of the id and the critical super-ego and I reveal how all three can get in the way of our self-care or damper our healing process. I also share about the relationship between the ego and the higher self and how to cultivate the higher self, especially when it comes to self-care and healing.

Her impactful story that she shares with us today shows us the immense power we reclaim when we release the shameguilt from our inner self.

I feel like I've been talking about sunscreen forever now, but I promise this is the last episode on this topic for a while! I wanted to wrap up this series with a myth-busting session. Why do I like myth-busting and why am I so passionate about sunscreens? Because I feel like sunscreens are the most misunderstood cosmetics, and on top of that, the healing powers of the sun are misunderstood as well. So, when it comes to the topics of sun exposure, sun safety and sunscreen usage, it’s a “double whammy” if you will. Enjoy the sun, go in the sun, but take the necessary precautions and protect yourself accordingly. Now let’s bust some sunscreen myths!

Mid-April is usually when we get itchy to go outside more for longer periods of time, and it is also when the sun starts to get stronger, and the UV index starts to get closer and closer to summer strength. Since I always take the time to talk about safe sun exposure at this time of year, this week’s episode is Part 1 of The Art of Safe Sun Exposure. The next two weeks are dedicated to the audio of a video training that I did back in 2020. This week covers the skin layers and the different systems within the skin when it pertains to sun protection, as well as how tanning works and the two different types of tanning. Next week will be all about sunscreens, the different filters, common myths, best practices, and all that fun stuff.

As we continue the theme of New Year’s resolutions that was discussed last week, in today's episode, we are talking about consistency (and more specifically habits). At the end of the day, let's not forget that self-care is the practice of taking care of oneself, both physically and mentally. Putting yourself first is an important act of self-love yet so many people feel guilty for doing it. Why is that? How often do you ask yourself, how am I feeling? What do I need in this moment? We are discussing all of this and more today on the podcast!

It’s the first episode of 2023, and you know what that means; it means we are going to be flooded by the New Year’s resolutions posts! It is important to note that setting New Year's resolutions is a personal choice, and I think at this time of year it is important to move away from the great debate of if it is “right” or “wrong” to make them, because at the end of the day, it is a personal choice. What I do want to cover is an alternative that you might not have thought about, and that is setting an intention. Setting an intention is a powerful tool that we can use to shape our lives and create the reality that we want, and this why I want to take the time today to go over how to set intentions in case that is a technique that is more aligned with what you want out of life!

In this episode, I cover what slugging is as well as some of the benefits and possible downfalls of it. But most importantly, I cover what Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL) is and what the 3 categories of skin moisturizing ingredients are, so you can make more informed choices when it comes to repairing and maintaining a healthy skin barrier.

If you surf the Internet or browse social media, you have probably come across an ad for light therapy devices at some point in time. The popularity of this technology means that the market is starting to be more and more saturated with a variety of devices for home use. How do you know if your LED device is effective though? In this episode, I share all the thing to look out for in terms of therapeutic-grade features for light therapy, so you know you will get the benefits of therapeutic-level light therapy, and not "Christmas tree light" grade light therapy!

I thought it would be good to end the year with some of the self-care trends that I have seen this year. From now until the end of the year, I will share four trends that I have witnessed gaining a lot of traction this year, and this week’s episode is about Manual Lymph Drainage. I was introduced to MLD in early 2019 when I took a Vodder class in Montreal, and today I reveal how this trend has evolved over the past 3 years, plus I talk about the lymph system, manual lymph drainage and the benefits of it, and also five common mistakes I see being perpetuated about lymph and lymph drainage in the industry and online.

This week's episode is all about surfactants! It was inspired from last week's episode because as I was putting together the different topics I wanted to talk about, I came across a lot of literature about surfactants. If you've been following me for a while, or have been a client for a while, you know I am not a fan of highly-foaming cleansers. To better understand this fact, we have to dig deeper into the world of surfactants. So, today I will be covering what are surfactants, why we need them, the different categories of surfactants and why some categories are better than others when we look at it with a corneotherapeutic lens.

This week is quite the loaded episode. I expand on last week’s episode about toxicants, by covering more specifically toxicants in cosmetics. I look at what greenwashing is, and a personal story about how I was introduced to greenwashing. I also share the reasons why I am not personally worried about potential toxicants in cosmetics, what I think the bigger issue is, and 5 things I would watch for in cosmetics that have nothing to do with toxicants.

Today’s episode is all about toxicants. I share how toxicants ended up on my topic list, and I also discuss the difference between toxins and toxicants, along with my approach to dealing with toxic load. Woo-woo is a big part of my practice at Genevieve's Self-Care Initiatives, and a big part of my life too. When talking about woo-woo, a lot of times people think it involves dancing around a tree while chanting during a wolf moon. There’s nothing wrong with that (if that suits your fancy!) but woo-woo is so much more than this. This week, I reveal what I think it really is all about, and I share with you my 4 categories of woo-woo. My hope is that this will make it a little bit easier to understand and navigate all of this if you are new to concepts I talk about today, and as always, if you do have any comments or questions, please reach out!
In Part 3 of this 3-part series about my story, I want to talk about my own health journey that I’ve been on over the past 10 years. In this episode, I will share a glimpse of what I went through, from the first serious symptoms to a rapid decline a few years later. I will also talk about my first introduction to woo-woo, and how it opened me up to a world I never even knew existed. I also share all the lessons I have learned along the way, in the hopes that this episode inspires you and motivates you to have compassion, love and respect for your body!
In last week's episode, I focused on my identity shifts in the skincare industry. In Part 2 of this mini-series about my story, I am shifting the focus to talk about skincare products and brands, and more specifically how my own brand, Embrace Self-Care Collections, came to be. I talk about common constraints in the skincare industry, some events that led me to launch my own brand, as well as some of my skincare values and how they transpire in Embrace!
If you’re a listener of this podcast or follow my content, you probably know that I’m usually posting about self-care routines, products, etc. Today I wanted to do something a little bit different (and go outside of my comfort zone!) and share about my story, specifically my identity. This episode is the first of a 3-part series, and in this episode, I begin by looking at where my journey in the beauty industry started in 2006, all the way through to 2020, and where I’m at right now as I record this. You’ll hear all about my beginnings in the beauty industry, my journey navigating it as a skin pro and what it was like to open my own skincare clinic. I also share the identity crisis that led to where I am today. This episode is a full picture of what makes Genevieve Self-Care Initiatives, and in it I share the lessons that I’ve learned along the way. Stay tuned next week for Part 2, where I talk about how my very own brand, Embrace Self-Care Collections, came to be!
Self-care rituals are an essential component of a balanced life, and this week on the podcast, I give my best tips on how to build your own self-care rituals. I highly recommend mapping these out in advance for when you need them, because when you need them is probably also the moment you don't feel like building a self-care ritual. So don’t come up with a self-care ritual in the moment! The point of a ritual is to have a go-to, pre-planned list of self-care activities that are tried-and-true personalized methods, and help you feel your best. In this episode, I cover my top 5 tips for building rituals that help you live your best life and feel your best. Let me know if you implement what I share today, and if there are specific self-care rituals that you use right now!
In this episode, we look at the different areas of self-care. It is said that there are about 8 areas of self-care, and they are all interconnected. We all know self-care is important, and while everyone can benefit from self-care, knowing which area to focus on can help you find balance more easily. Since self-care is all about finding ways to cope with daily life, you might find yourself needing more self-care in one specific area at a certain point in your life. At Genevieve’s Self-Care Initiatives, I think it is obvious by now that my focus is on physical self-care. Although my specialty is in that specific area, it doesn’t mean that I can’t help you recognize when other areas are out of balance, and then refer you to the appropriate professionals!
In this episode, we look at what self-care isn’t. With self-care being a growing trend, it is easy to slip into extremes when we are bombarded with information about what we should be doing. Whatever you do, always remember that self-care is an individualized experience, and it is not set in stone. What works for someone doesn’t mean it will work for you. So, keep the topics in this podcast in mind as you navigate your own self-care journey! Make sure to go to the blog post associated with this podcast to grab the link for the free toolkit!
For the very first episode of this podcast, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about what self-care is. The self-care industry is a trillion dollar industry and I do feel it is important to remember the true purpose and intent of self-care as we navigate this industry. In this episode, I share the definition of self-care, an important nuance to take into account, and I give you some journaling prompts to help you reflect on what you want your self-care journey to look and feel like.
