In this practical follow-up episode of the Your Digital Reputation podcast, host Roger Christie reflects on his conversations with two recent UK guests;

Charlotte Lander - Director of Social Media and former Global LinkedIn Lead at Standard Chartered Bank - discussing all things online employee advocacy. And then more recently, Sarah Walker-Smith - CEO of AMPA - the UK’s leading group of legal and professional services companies - and its largest law firm, Shakespeare Martineau - joined me to talk about why CEOs simply must have social in their toolkit.

Their common thread? Leaders are the most essential ingredient for any organisation’s success on social media. I'm looking at episodes number 37 & 38 in the YDR catalog, so please go back and have a listen to both, ideally before you dive into this short practical reflection.

I'm thrilled to be joined by Doug Taylor, CEO @ The Smith Family to explore: Why should CEOs tell stories on social media? Yes, stories. I wonder how many leaders see storytelling as part of their official remit today?

Some may think, well, why bother? My job is to manage the numbers and the decision making across the organisation, not tell stories. And that may well have been true just a few short decades ago. But we now live in the reputation economy, where leaders are required to do much more than just deliver shareholder returns.

Just as social media has provided leaders with a platform to speak and control their narrative, social media has also provided their stakeholders with access and the right of reply. When audiences are making decisions around whether to or not to work for you, to or not to buy from you, to or not to trust you, your stories as a CEO really do matter.

And for that reason, Doug Taylor - CEO and an unofficial Chief Storyteller, it was a pleasure. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

How valuable is social media to attract investment? A few years ago, I was talking to the founder of a fund manager who was telling me about how he used Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to gather intelligence on how well businesses were using social media and other digital channels to engage their key stakeholders.

He wasn't in his twenties or thirties and he certainly wasn't posting photos on social media of his lunch. He just wanted to get a sense of the business' ability to adapt and to scale by what he saw online as another input around the decision of whether or not to invest. It sounds really simple and smart, but it's certainly not common.

And there are plenty of others I've spoken to within the investment community who still feel like social media is a fad or a waste of time. But their views, the founders and my own are just opinions. What does the data say? And just how valuable is social media to the investment world today?

I'm so pleased to be joined on the Your Digital Reputation podcast by and explore this topic with Janelle Nowak-Santo, partner at Brunswick Group in the US and lead author for the recentDigital Investor Survey.

In this episode I ask a question I've been dying to tackle: Should leaders avoid social media? Fortunately, I had the opportunity to do so with not one but two very credentialed guests who have been critiquing social media's merits from a communications, leadership and reputation risk lens for many years between them.

The former head of communications at the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), among many other roles, Vanessa Puli and the former GM of Media and Communications at the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and committed Shakespearean,Matthew Gibbs. I'm joined by Deborah Jenkins, COO @ DEWR (Department of Employment and Workplace Relations). Together we're exploring one of those elephant in the room topics that many leaders and advisors grapple with: Is listening and engaging on social media worth your time?

There's a perception that social media is all about talking. In fact, I'd go as far as to say it's a stigma that keeps many well-meaning leaders off the platforms who think that, from what they see, it's a place for people who love the sound of their own voice.

But what if you flip things around? What if rather than treating social media as a way to broadcast, you went online to listen and participate. Instead, what leaders stand to gain when they invest their time learning and contributing to conversations rather than thinking their posts are a prized Asset. Deborah Jenkins is a living, breathing case study of this approach. She was one of the earlier adopters of social media as a senior bureaucrat in her role at the Australian Taxation Office at the time, and now as Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Secretary at the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations. It's an absolute pleasure to welcome Deborah Jenkins to the Your Digital Reputation Podcast.

I'm joined by Kim Krogh Andersen, Group Executive at Telstra to discuss: What's the value of getting your executive team on social media? Yes. Not just the one leader, but the whole executive - a digital coalition.

If you talk to any leader, they'll tell you the personal challenge of being the sole mouthpiece for the whole organisation and how hard it is to talk to every issue and audience online, particularly those they're not best placed to discuss. And if you talk to any board, they'll tell you the risks involved in having the one digital hero and how key person risk creates as much of a succession nightmare online as it does offline.

If either of these challenges resonate, this is an episode you simply can't miss. We hope you enjoy the conversation.

I'm joined by Emma Peacock, CEO of FrontRunners. Together we ask: Can you balance personal values and professional interests online? It's a really tough question. Particularly for individuals who, as we know on this podcast, are expected to speak up and on top of that, pretty much everything they've ever said or done can then be found on Google.

So in light of this, how can leaders uphold their values, uphold their integrity, and uphold their reputation when it comes to balancing personal and professional interests online?

Emma is a great person to help us wade through this complex issue. As FrontRunners CEO, Emma supports athletes in engaging with the climate and environmental challenges facing all of us. Emma has a ton of experience working alongside her partner, former Wallaby captain, and now Senator for the ACT David Pocock on various projects and building a public profile for good through sport, particularly around conservation, climate change and marriage equality. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did.

I'm joined by Mike Kaiser, Director General of Queensland Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government & Planning. Together we explore a question for leaders: Is it risky to be yourself online?

Mike Kaiser is someone who brings his authentic self to every social media interaction he makes and in this conversation, he shares with listeners both the pros and cons of his authentic leadership online.

He’s perhaps the only senior bureaucrat I know who manages to balance posts about his favourite rock bands with updates on state projects and how wonderful his team is at getting on with the job. It was an honour to have Mike Kaiser on the Your Digital Reputation podcast; an entertaining, wisdom packed, timeless case study for any leader looking to enhance and protect their digital reputation.

I'm joined by Antoinette Lattouf, broadcaster, columnist and author. Together we explore how leaders can use social media to help others be seen and heard online.

The common criticism of social media is that too often it's just all 'me, me, me', whether it's advice or a humble brag or simply self-indulgent stories designed to give the author a moment of celebrity. And sadly, this is one of the main reasons why so many leaders choose to avoid social media themselves, opting out of the seemingly 'global vanity project' it can at times appear to be.

When good leaders aren't seen or heard online, when diverse and different voices are lost, that has a real trickle down effect. As the saying goes, 'You can't be what you can't see'. And this is equally true on social media. When leaders stay quiet and leave social media to the loudest voices, we're less likely to see and hear the wonderfully rich and diverse stories.

Social media should be about sharing the stories that often aren't heard on other and leaders can change this reality. We've talked about the concept of 'me versus we' before on this podcast. So I'm thrilled to to continue the conversation with Antoinette Lattouf - someone who understands this challenge, this reality better than most. Alongside many other achievements, Antoinette is a broadcaster, columnist, author of 'How to Lose Friends and Influence White People', and co-founder of Media Diversity Australia, which is a great example of how she uses her own voice and influence to help others get heard.

We hope you enjoy the conversation. If you have any thoughts or questions from this episode, please get in touch with your host, Roger Christie, via LinkedIn - we’d love to hear from you.

I'm joined by Matthew Abbott, Corporate Affairs Director and ex advisor to Zip Co and ASIC. In this episode, we’re trying to get to the bottom of why almost 85% of the ASX 200 CEOs are either inactive or ineffective on LinkedIn. It’s a big number, 85%. This is one of the key findings in our recent ‘Digital Reputation Report‘, where we analysed the LinkedIn activities of all CEOs from the ASX200 – Australia’s 200 largest listed organisations by market cap.

So why is this happening? What's missing in the narrative around executive use of social media that means so many still choose to stay silent and what could be done to build confidence, capability, and activity among key leaders across the country. I'm very fortunate to be joined in this episode by Matthew Abbott. Together we unpack the report, explore the reasons why we see such low levels of digital reputation participation, and most importantly, discuss how we can change this current state to hear more from our best leaders.

We hope you enjoy the conversation. If you have any thoughts or questions from this episode, please get in touch with your host, Roger Christie, via LinkedIn - we’d love to hear from you.

In this episode, I’m joined by Dr Kirstin Ferguson AM; author, columnist, company director and one of Australia’s most prominent leadership experts. Together we’re tackling: The Art of Modern Leadership.

It’s a big topic in the context of digital reputation, and one of the great untapped opportunities across corporate Australia.

Our own research into the LinkedIn efforts of the 200 CEOs leading our largest listed organisations - the ASX200 - showed that almost 85% of CEOs were either invisible, inactive or ineffective on LinkedIn. 85%. What a huge opportunity to leave a legacy missed.

These digital communication platforms are such a rare opportunity for CEOs and others looking to share their voice and views. For anyone looking to amplify their own positive impact by going well beyond the four walls of their organisation to inspire and motivate key audiences online. When you talk about legacy and impact, which leader wouldn't want to harness that capability?

Kirstin is a living, breathing example of someone who amplifies good leadership online, and someone who encourages other leaders to take up the opportunity themselves in her new book called ‘Head & Heart - The Art of Modern Leadership’. In this episode, I’m joined by Co-Founder and Brand Director at Four Pillars Gin, Matt Jones. Together we discuss this reality for leaders today: you are your brand. When you show up, when you engage, your brand thrives.

In our digital world, your choices and actions as a leader have the potential to undermine organisational, brand and reputation, but they can also be the very things that truly bring it to life that unlock its potential.

So what does it take to get it right? What does it look like when a leader is or embodies the brand? And how can you translate that alignment, that symmetry into your choices and actions online?

Matt is someone who deeply understands brand, deeply understands his role as a leader and together with his co-founders has made a gin crowned the world's best - two years in a row. We hope you enjoy the conversation and Matt's perspective and wisdom on the topic.

In this episode, we’re tackling the question: How can leaders remain visible in a hybrid work world? My guest is Amanda Bernardo, Transformation Leader in the Government of Canada.

Back in early 2020, I was researching the different ways governments around the world were equipping their staff with the digital skills they would need to deliver services of value into the future. The government of Canada’s Digital Academy jumped out as one of the more progressive, collaborative and transparent approaches I could see. In those days, Amanda managed that Digital Academy. I could see from her online efforts that she really was at the frontline of transformational change within the public service.

Today, Amanda now leads a team overseeing organisational change management and enterprise transformation within the Government of Canada. She’s walked the talk, led by example, experienced the benefits and counseled other leaders on how they too can harness their digital presence in our hybrid work world.

I trust you’ll gain plenty from Amanda’s wisdom, experience and insights and enjoy this conversation as much as I did. If you have any thoughts or questions from this episode, please get in touch with me, your host Roger Christie or Amanda Bernardo - we’d love to hear from you.

An emerging trend Craig Mullaney, Brunswick Group and I have observed from different sides of the world is that multiple leaders, both within and beyond their organisational boundaries, appear to be working in partnership online. Strange. Why would that be doing that? What added benefits could working together offer leaders that they just couldn't access on their own? Why are leaders, even leaders from competing organisations, backing one another up in their posts on LinkedIn or Twitter? What could be gained by having multiple voices online, rather than just the one digital hero?

In this episode, we have a slightly different interview for you. And one that is essential listening for anyone who needs evidence and examples to get their leaders online. Earlier this year, I joined Craig Mullaney, partner at Brunswick Group for the IABC World Conference. The session was titled, ‘Going far together: How leaders can work together digitally to inspire a global audience.” It was an absolute pleasure chatting with Craig and thank you to the IABC for the opportunity.

We hope you enjoy this special edition of the podcast. If you have any thoughts or questions from this episode, please get in touch with Roger Christie or Craig Mullaney - we’d love to hear from you.

Is digital transformation truly possible without digital leaders? This is such a crucial discussion right now particularly in the public sector, given the need for leaders to adapt to changing expectations around them. For leaders, if service delivery is now a given for audiences, digital storytelling can be your differentiator and secret weapon.

So it was an absolute pleasure to have Martin Stewart-Weeks, on the show to share his wisdom on the topic. As founder of consultancy Public Purpose, a regular figure on government digital related task forces and boards and someone who has decades of state and federal government experience behind them, Martin has a wealth of experience to share.

Social media has put corporate culture on display for the whole world to see. Conversations and issues that may previously have been hidden behind closed doors are now accessible in real-time, globally, via the public social web. And we’re not just talking brands here - this very much affects individual leaders too.

Our guest on this episode, Daniel Murray, CEO and Founder of Empathic Consulting knows an awful lot about company culture, leadership and how to align values, behaviours and reputation across an organisation. He’s also seen first hand just how much pressure the widespread digital adoption through COVID has placed on leaders, particularly those whose words don’t translate into actions.

Tune in to this conversation to find out what leaders can do to survive the digital stress test and, ideally, even thrive online. We hope you enjoy the conversation. If you have any thoughts or questions from this episode, get in touch with your host, Roger Christie via LinkedIn - we’d love to hear from you.
