Thanksgiving of 1989.
There was a home in Hagerstown, Maryland that was full of a lot of joy. Probably a lot like your home today.
The Spessard family was celebrating Thanksgiving, with a dad named Jimmy, his young wife Debra, and their two small sons, Jared and Jason.
The next day Jimmy would be leaving town for a while. For two weeks, was the plan. He’s was heading to the country called Zaire – we now know that country as The Democratic Republic of the Congo.
But as fate would have it, Thanksgiving of 1989 would be the last one that Jimmy would celebrate with his family. And you know what? He knew it.
So today we’re going to remember and celebrate the life of Jimmy Spessard. He’s but one of the CIA Officers who died in the line of duty and is now remembered at CIA headquarters with a star chiseled into a very special marble wall in the Old Headquarters Building.
I offer you this story of remembrance and celebration as we all gather today just like Jimmy did back in 1989. I hope it’s a wonderful reminder to us all of how thankful we ought to be to so many who have been of service to this country. And of the many more likely to come.

Seventy Seven years ago this month, there was a veteran in Yonkers, New York who was sitting at home after being discharged from the military, having been wounded in World War II. His name was Hugh Redmond.
Today we’re going to re-tell the story of Hugh Redmond his incredible life, his service as an intelligence officer, and his eventual death. And the reason that we’re focusing on it today is because of events happening next week.
Joe Biden is traveling to Asia and, based on reporting from Reuters News, he will likely meet the President of China.
And it’s in China where Hugh Redmond died. A captive held for over 15 years by the Chinese Government, often in solitary confinement and often tortured. To this day, we’re not really sure what happened to Hugh — officials in Beijing told us a story at the time but neither the US Government nor Hugh’s family ever believed it.
So today I want to remind us of Hugh’s story of courage, tenacity, and love of country all as America’s president goes face to face with China’s President.
It’s a story worth re-telling, folks, because as PDB listeners know, we face the growing prospect of war between China and America.
And if that happens, we are going to need men and women just like Hugh Redmond. A new generation of American fighters who are willing to sacrifice everything to ensure freedom and liberty for all.

We are two days out from America’s midterm elections. The Republicans have probably won the House of Representatives; confirmation likely sometime today. The Senate, however, is still up for grabs. First, the Pentagon has admitted it has boots on the ground in Ukraine, with the goal of trying to understand what’s happening to all that weaponry we’re sending to Kiev. Second, China’s looking to make a new friend in Central America, and the way that they’re doing it, is pretty sneaky.
Third, a record number of Americans are moving to Mexico, of all places, but some Mexicans aren’t very happy about that.

Welcome to this Special Edition of the PDB.
This week marks the six month anniversary of war in Ukraine. We have seen so many twists and turns, so many developments, that it’s been overwhelming at times. And maybe that’s why polls show Americans are kind of losing interest.
A mid-July Fox News poll showed 69% of us were concerned about Russia’s invasion, but that’s down from 82% in March. In terms of overall concern, the issue of Ukraine ranked sixth of eight issues tested.
But it’s still a major story, with one clear reason: it’s costing you billions of dollars — at least $13.5B so far. To give you a sense of how shocking that is, when we were fighting in Afghanistan in 2019, we committed around $5B. Again, $13.5B for one year in Ukraine, $5B in Afghanistan.
Plus, there’s a very real concern that this war could escalate and cause us to fight a much bigger war with a nuclear-armed Russian. That would mean your friends and neighbors would be involved in the most horrifying battle that the globe has ever seen.
So, we are going to remind ourselves of this complicated story this morning. We’re going to do a recap of the past six months. But don’t worry, I’m going to use an analogy to help us through it. This is going to be a little unconventional, so hang with me.

Do you trust the FBI?
Because if the answer is yes, then this development yesterday in Florida doesn’t bother you much. It’s standard procedure for an FBI that is professional, and just doing their jobs as the rules and law allow.
But is that true? Is there anything in the recent past that might give a reasonable person pause about the FBI? Because if so, that might suggest that this raid, this investigation in Florida is anything but proper or legal.
So that’s what we’re going to wrestle with this morning as this major story develops.

And so this morning we’re going to unpack exactly what’s going on — who this character AMLO is — and what to do about it. Because his statements yesterday are a flashing red light that things aren’t well in Mexico City, the capital of a country that we share a 2,000 mile long border with, and happens to be a major trade partner. The consequences could be very dire for you and every other American if we don’t quickly see what’s happening.
