LONG BRANCH, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners called for the immediate investigation into the marine animal deaths along the New Jersey coastline during a press conference at Seven Presidents Beach.

“Yesterday, my fellow Commissioners and I passed a resolution calling for an immediate investigation of offshore projects and marine animal deaths along the New Jersey coastline,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “We join a growing group of elected officials, residents, and advocates who want to know why there is an unprecedented number of dead whales and dolphins washing ashore, with one washing ashore in Sea Bright as recently as Sunday, April 2.”
“We’re here today to push for an independent investigation into the potentially catastrophic impacts of the proposed 3,400 offshore wind turbines along the Jersey Shore,” said Rep. Chris Smith (R-Manchester). “American democracy is all about consent of the governed, and we haven’t given our consent to turn our shore into an industrialized offshore wind farm. Governor Murphy and President Biden cannot hide behind shoddy environmental impact statements any longer—the people of New Jersey deserve better.”
“What we are asking through our bill AR 181 is a complete moratorium on all activity related to the surveying and mapping in advance of the wind turbines. We feel that is a reasonable stance under the circumstances,” said Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger (LD-13). “Once a definitive clause has been identified, then we are asking for corrective measures in place before any resumption of these activities. Everyone wants alternative energy, what they don’t want is alternative energy at any cost.”
“Shore towns residents are outraged that their voice has been squelched in a coordinated effort of the State and federal government to rush through a so-called environmentally friendly project that will forever change our Jersey Shore coastline,” Assemblywoman Victoria Flynn (LD-13) stated. “We need to hit pause to ensure any offshore activity is safe not only for the whales and dolphins, but also to ensure that offshore activity will not impact our State’s economy.”
“I encourage all elected officials in Monmouth County to join us in supporting our environment and asking our State and federal agencies to provide ALL of the information about these deaths so that the best decision possible can be made to protect our marine life and our coastlines,” said Director Arnone.

FREEHOLD, NJ – Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon is warning
residents that the U.S. Department of State is experiencing major passport processing
delays and is therefore advising residents to apply for passports well in advance of any
planned international travel.
According to the most recent update on March 24, 2023, the U.S. State Department
passport service times are as follows:
• Routine service – 10 to 13 weeks
• Expedited service (for an additional $60) – 7 to 9 weeks
*The U.S. State Department is informing that these service times do not include the
estimated mailing times for the application to be received by a passport agency and
then for the passport to be delivered to you, which can add up to another 4 weeks to
regular and expedited service.

“We have been receiving a multitude of phone calls from concerned residents that
they have not yet received their passports, and are unable to have their questions
answered when they contact the National Passport Center,” said Clerk Hanlon.
“Unfortunately, my office cannot help once the passport application has been
forwarded to the U.S. State Department, and therefore, those applying for passports
must interface with the U.S. State Department directly or they may wish to contact
their appropriate congressional representative,” said Clerk Hanlon. “Our constituents
are understandably frustrated and we are hoping that the U.S. State Department will
resolve these issues expeditiously.”
In order to avoid delays, residents are advised to plan many months ahead for
international travel. Residents can apply for a passport at one of the County Clerk’s
two Passport Offices in Freehold and Neptune.
To minimize customer wait times at the County Clerk’s Passport Offices,
appointments are recommended, and are required for parties of 4 or more applicants.
Priority will be granted to those with appointments. Walk-ins are welcome but should
expect longer wait times. Appointments can be made by calling the respective
passport office during normal business hours.
• Freehold – Monmouth County Clerk’s Office located in the Market Yard at 33
Mechanic Street (south of Main Street). The hours are Monday through Friday from
8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 732-431-7324.
• Neptune – Monmouth County Connection at 3544 Route 66 (near Home
Depot). The hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and
Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 732-303-
2828.
To obtain a passport, it is necessary to have a certified birth certificate with a raised
seal, social security number, and current identification such as a driver’s license or
government identification. Passport photos are available for a fee of $10 at both
locations.
Passport forms must be filled out prior to arrival at our offices and can be downloaded
online on our website at MonmouthCountyClerk.com or on the U.S. State Department
website at travel.state.gov.
Parents who are making a passport application for a child under the age of 16 are
required to appear together or to submit additional documentation.

According to NJ.com, The National Weather Service yesterday confirmed that 4 tornadoes touched down in the state during storms Saturday night.
After looking into reports, meteorologists confirmed that the twisters touched down in Cinnaminson, Howell, Jackson and near Sea Girt during a stretch of turbulent thunderstorms. As of yesterday afternoon, no injuries from the storms were reported. A full study done by the National Weather Service was expected to have been completed last night. The new single is called “Cowboy Nudes”. The song’s an apocalyptic funhouse mirror, but more than that, it’s a massive departure for the band. They’ve totally overhauled their scrappy post-punk sound into something volcanic, bugged-out, and unpredictable (watch out for that bongo vs. sitar duel before the third verse). It’s the sound of them throwing the kitchen sink toward some of the weirder corners of the classic rock pantheon – Bitches Brew, Ween, Uncle Tupelo, Tim Buckley – and piecing it all back together inside Sgt. Pepper’s garage.

Monmouth and Ocean Counties have faired well in a newly released Health Tanking survey released by the County Health Rankings and Roadmaps.

Out of New Jersey’s 21 counties Ocean County ranked 9th while Monmouth ranked 7th. This score is based on a number of data points including reading and math scores, quality of health, length of life, social and economic factors, and the physical environment.Monmouth County had a lower rate of adult obesity, at 22%, than the state (28%) and the US (32%). It also had a better ratio of primary care of physicians and dentists as well as the rate of uninsured residents.See interactive map
The Wall Township Board of Education is looking to change its rules to help reduce the amount of time the public can speak.
The new Board of Education president told the Asbury Park Press that the rules are set up to make things more civil. Christine Steitz said, “We have made the changes to our conduct of meetings. I think the board is united in the desire to have a civil, productive meeting”.Public comments have been reduced from 5 minutes to 3 and will be held during a second portion of the meeting which, in some cases, may be held hours later. Board members will no longer answer questions to the public portion of the meeting and only the president will speak for the governing board during those meetings. The changes will be in affect starting April 25th.
FREEHOLD – A Monmouth County Grand Jury has returned a superseding indictment against a man and his girlfriend for jointly attempting to bribe the victim of a violent sexual assault in order to prevent her from cooperating in his prosecution, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced Wednesday.
Kareem Lee, 32, and Erin Logan, 31, both of Keyport, are each charged with second-degree Conspiracy and second-degree Bribery of a Witness. Lee remains additionally charged with first-degree Armed Robbery, first-degree Aggravated Sexual Assault, and two related second-degree weapons offenses.
Shortly after 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 21, 2022, members of the Tinton Falls Police Department were dispatched to a local motel on Route 33. Upon arrival, the victim told officers that she had been sexually assaulted at gunpoint by a man who had entered her room.
An investigation by members of the MCPO Special Victims Bureau and the Tinton Falls Police Department resulted in Lee being identified as a suspect in the case, and he was located and arrested by members of the Red Bank Police Department in Count Basie Park the next day.
Continued investigation revealed that on various dates in October and November 2022, Lee, Logan, and a third party offered a sum of cash to the victim in exchange for a signed and notarized document in which she would state that she did not wish to pursue the case against Lee. Logan was arrested in December 2022.
Investigators are actively seeking additional information about the activities of these defendants. Anyone with information regarding this matter is asked to contact Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Dawn Correia at 800-533-7443 or Tinton Falls Police Department Officer Christopher Mills at 732-542-4422.
The case is assigned to Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Danielle Zanzuccki, Director of the Special Victims Bureau. Lee and Logan both remain detained at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) pending future court proceedings; he is being represented by Michael Kuhns, Esq., with an office in Lawrence Township, while she is represented by Taylor DiBenedetto, Esq., with an office in New Brunswick.
Convictions on first-degree criminal charges can be punishable by up to 20 years in state prison, while second-degree crimes can result in terms of up to 10 years.
Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of the trial rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State law.
Washington, D.C. – The American Gaming Association has released updates to the association’s Responsible Marketing Code for Sports Wagering, which sets the industry standard for responsibility in marketing and advertising of sports betting.
“Established in 2019, AGA’s Responsible Marketing Code reflects the commitment of our members to set and adhere to a high bar for responsible advertising,” stated AGA President and CEO Bill Miller. “Today’s updates advance that commitment and represent our intention to protect consumers and evolve our standards as this nascent market matures.”
The changes—developed in collaboration with AGA members—are the most significant to the Code since its inception, including:
- Enhancing protections for college-aged audiences by:

- Prohibiting college partnerships that promote, market or advertise sports wagering activity (other than to alumni networks or content focused on responsible gaming initiatives or problem gambling awareness).
- Prohibiting sportsbook NIL deals for amateur and college athletes.
- Adding age restrictions (21+) for any individual featured in sports betting advertising.
- Changing all references to the “legal age of wagering” to 21-plus.
- Banning all use of “risk free” in advertising.
- Formalizing an annual process for reviewing and updating the Code.
The updated standards go into effect immediately with a grace period for existing or deployed assets until July 1, 2023. Full updates to the Code can be found here.
“Advertising plays an essential role in migrating consumers away from predatory illegal sportsbooks and into the protections of the legal, regulated market while providing responsible gaming resources,” added Miller. “The AGA and our members are committed to building a sustainable marketplace that protects vulnerable populations and gives consumers the knowledge and tools to keep sports betting fun for adults.”

New Jersey’s attorney general says his office has taken control of the police department in the state’s third-largest city, Paterson.
The announcement Monday by Attorney General Matt Platkin came less than a month after Paterson police officers fatally shot a well-known crisis intervention worker during a tense standoff. Platkin said in a news release that his office had assumed control of all police functions without delay, including the division that investigates internal police matters. The announcement didn’t mention the shooting of 31-year-old Najee Seabrooks directly, but it reflected activists’ concerns about how the department was being run.

LINCROFT, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners has announced that the COVID-19 vaccine site at Brookdale Community College is scheduled to close on Tuesday, March 28.
“We are grateful to Brookdale Community College and Monmouth Medical Center for their partnership in this endeavor, which helped the County provide a large-scale COVID-19 vaccine site to our residents during a time when there was a significant demand for access to the vaccine,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “Thankfully, residents now have a variety of ways to access the vaccine, if they would like to receive it, including through the Monmouth County Health Department (MCHD).”
“With the Brookdale Community College vaccine site closing, there are still options for those who would like to receive to a COVID-19 vaccine, including weekly sites in Asbury Park, Neptune, Freehold and Howell, which are run by the MCHD,” said Commissioner Susan M. (RED BANK, NJ, March 14, 2023) — Lunch Break, the comprehensive basic needs and social service center, turned 40 on March 14, 2023 — a far cry from the church food pantry established by Mrs. Norma Todd and local leaders to alleviate hunger.
Mrs. Todd’s call to action for helping the hungry in the community resulted in more than just a legacy of nourishment for those in need.
Forty years later hunger remains an even greater problem. Thanks to concerned community members, the foundation Mrs. Todd built for her beloved community has thrived and flourished, despite challenging global, national and local events. As long as hunger and poverty exist, so will Lunch Break.
Lunch Break at 121 Drs James Parker Blvd. in Red Bank, NJ is committed to caring for the well-being of community members by providing basic necessities, including food security, as well as employment training, housing solutions, resume coaching, job placement resources, college prep guidance and vocational workshops for high school juniors and seniors, and financial counseling free of charge to hundreds of families and individuals living at or below the poverty line in Monmouth County and beyond.
Governed by a leadership team, including the Board of Trustees and Executive Director Gwendolyn Love, the organization relies on its network of more than 2,000 volunteers, which includes corporate and business partnerships.
Breaking the Cycle of Poverty in our Community
In New Jersey alone, 657,320 people, including 175,830 children, are food insecure, according to a 2022 Feeding America and Hunger Free New Jersey report. That means 1 in 14 individuals and 1 in 11 children live in homes without consistent access to adequate food.
Across Monmouth County, the rate of hunger among seniors has more than doubled since 2001, according to the National Council on Aging, a rate that is expected to increase as Baby Boomers age. Nearly 14 percent of New Jersey’s 1.5 million senior citizens face hunger each year – translating to about 230,000 older residents who don’t have enough food to eat. These seniors regularly face the choice of buying food, paying the electric bill or paying for medications, according to Hunger Free NJ.
In 2022, Lunch Break saw an unprecedented demand for groceries, with more than 24,000 food pickups. Same holds true for meals, with more than 10,000 meals delivered to the homebound and 12,000 to the Pan American motel in addition to the 96,000-plus served. Continental breakfast and lunch are offered six days a week and Community Dinner on Friday.
In response to community demand for services, the organization completed a $12 million Capital Campaign in 2022 to expand the current facility. The building, under construction through late fall 2023, will incorporate additional space for on-site services, including the Life Skills Center, warehouse storage, administration, and donation accessibility.
Lunch Break’s 40th celebration of service is a culmination of the efforts begun by Mrs. Todd, who was struck by the problem of hunger in her own backyard. In January 1983, Mrs. Todd and 34 others gathered at the Friends Meeting House in Shrewsbury to discuss the issue of hunger in Monmouth County. They committed themselves to helping community members who found it difficult to provide the basics for their families by raising funds and recruiting volunteers. That commitment flourished into a “community center” at Drs. James Parker Boulevard — a place filled with hope that clients and volunteers call home.
The architects of this blossoming self-sufficiency program strived to establish a refuge for those distressed by history’s watershed moments that uprooted entire communities: severe economic recessions, natural disasters such as hurricanes, viral pandemics. Lunch Break’s service has seen its fair share of all three extreme examples in the past 13 years alone.
The mission continues under the leadership of the Board of Trustees and Executive Director Gwendolyn Love, who joined Lunch Break in 2008.
“What Mrs. Todd and the early volunteers created out of love for their neighbors is actually a great love story and I’m so excited there is interest for others to know about those early days. There was a movement, a call to action, to meet a need in the community to feed the hungry,” said Mrs. Love. “And from that labor of love developed an awareness of other challenges to be met.”
She continued: “Lunch Break stepped up to provide help.”
Lunch Break took further shape in March 1983, when Reverend Terence Rosheuvel provided the basement of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Red Bank to serve hot lunches. For a short time in 1985, Lunch Break moved its operations to the Masonic Temple on West Bergen Place. The following year, through combined efforts of many contributors and donors, Lunch Break opened the doors to its permanent home in Red Bank.
Integral to establishing Lunch Break’s spiritual framework and selfless philosophies, Rosheuvel was honored with the Norma Todd Service Award, presented to him by Mrs. Todd’s daughter Cynthia and granddaughter Rikki, at the organization’s 2018 Fall Gala.
During Lunch Break’s formative years, Rosheuvel wrote in his 1988 book “Loaves and Fishes: the Lunch Break Story” :
“Lunch Break — and indeed anything that genuinely brings people together – has a value far greater than its size or its almost accidental history might suggest. It represents the hope that we can rehumanize our society and begin to reestablish the social values that have all but disappeared.”
Mrs. Todd passed her legacy of love and determination to the many who continue in her journey.
Thanks to the passion and dedication of volunteers, Board members, staff, and the generous community members, Lunch Break continues to build on Norma Todd’s dream. Its vision is to lead as a comprehensive food, nutrition, social service and life skills resource for community members.
Mrs. Love knows that vision is clearly in sight: “By being one-on-one with people – that’s when change occurs and that’s Lunch Break’s greatest strength.”

SEA ISLE CITY, N.J. (AP) — Marine animal welfare officials say eight dolphins have died after they became stranded on a beach in New Jersey.
The Marine Mammal Stranding Center said on Facebook Tuesday morning that a pod of eight dolphins known as “common dolphins” had become stranded in Sea Isle City and that staff and a veterinarian had responded with help from local officials. Officials said at the time that two of the dolphins had died. On Tuesday afternoon officials said the remaining six dolphins were assessed by the veterinarian and the decision was made to euthanize them to prevent further suffering. The dolphins have been taken to the New Jersey State Lab for necropsies.
FREEHOLD, NJ – Monmouth County Constitutional Officers Surrogate Maureen T. Raisch, Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon, Esq. and Sheriff Shaun Golden are inviting fourth graders throughout the County to showcase what they like best about Monmouth County by designing posters for the “My County” poster contest.
“I am thrilled to announce the ‘My County’ poster contest for 2023,” said County Surrogate Maureen T. Raisch. “We invite all fourth graders to take part in this great contest to illustrate what they love about Monmouth County including our County Government. I can’t wait to see the creativity of these posters!”
Since the majority of fourth graders study the State of New Jersey as part of their social studies curriculum, all school principals in Monmouth County are being asked to get fourth-grade students involved by creating their own poster that relates to Monmouth County. The posters created should depict special and unique things about Monmouth County.
Rules for the contest are as follows:
- Posters must be on a standard 22-inch by 28-inch poster board.
- The words “Monmouth County” must appear at the top of the poster in 4-inch letters with black marker.
- The student’s name, teacher’s name and school must be printed neatly in the lower right-hand corner of the back of the poster.
“As New Jersey’s fourth graders study the State of New Jersey as part of their social studies curriculum, the ‘My County’ poster contest helps students gain an understanding of what County Government does each and every day,” said County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon. “The design and content of the posters are up to the students’ imaginations, and I am excited to see their creativity in depicting some of Monmouth County’s best features.”
“We look forward to the ‘My County’ poster contest every year since it’s a project where students dedicate valuable time and use innovative ideas to create posters about Monmouth County,” said Sheriff Shaun Golden. “It’s also a notable example of civic engagement, as it helps our students learn more about the great County we live in.”
Posters must be mailed or delivered to the Monmouth County Surrogate’s Office at the Hall of Records, 1 East Main St., Freehold. The deadline is 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 1, 2023. Invitations to participate in the contest have been sent to all County school principals.
Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third-place winners. Nine posters will also receive honorable mentions. Each of the twelve posters will be individually displayed at the Monmouth County Clerk’s Office.
The poster contest is sponsored statewide by the Constitutional Officers Association of New Jersey to commemorate County Government Month in April. All posters become the property of the Constitutional Officers Association and the County of Monmouth. Submission of a poster grants the Constitutional Officers Association permission to display a poster in public places.

FREEHOLD – A Long Branch man was sentenced to a total of ten years in state
prison in connection with a 2021 drug investigation, Monmouth County Prosecutor
Raymond S. Santiago announced Friday.
On Friday, March 10, 2023, before Monmouth County Superior Court Judge
Marc Lemieux, Johnny Rodriquez, 51, of Long Branch, was sentenced to ten years in a
New Jersey State Prison on a first-degree Possession of Cocaine with the Intent to
Distribute in excess of 5 ounces.
Rodriquez previously entered a plea on July 11, 2022.
A three-month-long 2021 investigation by the Monmouth County Narcotics and
Criminal Enterprise Unit and Long Branch Police Department culminated in search
warrants being executed at Rodriquez’s residence on North 5th Avenue, Long Branch,
Platinum Touch mechanic shop on Broadway, Long Branch, and 99 North Point Road,
Lanoka Harbor. Upon executing the warrants, police seized approximately 650 grams
of cocaine, approximately $19,000 cash, three cell phones, a 2003 Lexus, and seized a
bank account with approximately $91,000. The Prosecutor’s Office would also like to
thank members of the Lacey Township Police Department for their assistance.
This case was handled by Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Emily
Cartmell. Rodriquez is being represented by Steven Nelson, Esq., of Neptune.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gas prices dipped in New Jersey and around the nation as a whole amid a drop in crude oil prices.
AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in New Jersey on Friday was $3.29, down a penny from last week. Drivers were paying $4.26 a gallon on average a year ago at this time. The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.45, down two cents from last week. Drivers were paying $4.28 a gallon on average a year ago at this time.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey’s attorney general has released hours of police body-camera footage in the fatal officer shooting of a Paterson man.
The footage shows Najee Seabrooks’ mother pleading with him to leave the room where he was holed up. The state attorney general says Seabrooks died March 3 after he lunged at police officers with a knife. His death is being investigated by the attorney general under a state law requiring it. His colleagues at a crisis intervention organization say authorities prevented them from using their mental-health expertise to deescalate the situation. They argue that the police department needs to be overhauled.

WILDWOOD, N.J. (AP) — Republican congressmen are calling for a halt to offshore wind power projects. The call comes amid a spate of whale deaths on the U.S. East Coast.
Thursday’s hearing in Wildwood could be the beginning of an expected campaign by the GOP-controlled House to investigate the Biden administration’s clean energy plans. Representatives from New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania held the hearing near where New Jersey has authorized three offshore wind farms. Twenty-nine whales have died on the east coast since Dec. 1. Three federal and one state agency say there is no evidence that the two are related.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — He’s led Atlantic City casino workers through three strikes, been arrested at protests nearly 10 times, and won workers including housekeepers, cocktail servers and others the best contract they’ve ever had.
Now Bob McDevitt is stepping down as president of the main Atlantic City casino workers union, Local 54 of Unite Here, after 26 years as one of the most powerful people in Atlantic City. On May 1 he’ll become head of the union’s national pension plan. The union’s 2016 strike led to the closure of the Trump Taj Mahal casino, but it reopened two years later under new ownership as Hard Rock.
There’s a plan to convert the site of the former Wawa in Hazlet for a totally different use.
The Asbury Park Press is reporting that an urgent care center will take over the site of the Wawa on Route 36. The Hazlet Land Use Board is set to vote tonight on a motion to convert the former convenience store location to a Hackensack Meridian urgent care center, their eighth in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. They have location in Brick, Eatontown, Forker River, Freehold, Jackson, Toms River, and Neptune. The location on Long Beach Island is listed as “Temporarily Closed”. The health care provider lists the Hazlet location as “Coming Soon” on their website.
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — More and more states are shielding the home addresses of judges and other public employees following attacks or threats made against them. The new laws add a layer of secrecy to government documents as a means of improving the personal safety of officials. They generally have received strong support in state legislatures. But some open-government advocates are raising concerns that the laws also could make it harder to hold public officials accountable. That’s because journalists sometimes rely on home addresses in public records to determine whether elected officials are paying their property taxes or actually living in the districts they represent.
TOMS RIVER, N.J. (AP) — The former Ciba-Geigy chemical plant in Toms River, New Jersey, is one of America’s worst toxic waste sites, poisoning the drinking water of the Jersey Shore community where childhood cancer rates rose significantly in the 1980s and 90s. With that pain still fresh, many residents want New Jersey to scrap a proposed settlement with the site’s current owner, BASF Corporation, that would create walking trails, a boardwalk and an education center on the site. Some suggest the land be permanently abandoned and kept off-limits to people forever due to contamination there. New Jersey says the deal is designed to have BASF restore natural resources that its predecessor polluted.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline increased nearly a dime since last week to $3.46. However, this price pop could be short-lived, as demand and the global cost of oil have fallen recently.
“Less expensive oil and fewer people fueling usually combine to lower pump prices,” said Andrew Gross, AAA spokesperson, “However, there is some upward pricing pressure at the moment due to the switch to summer blend gasoline, which may add about five to ten cents per gallon. But if demand and oil costs remain low, this recent price bounce may fade.”
According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand declined from 9.11 million to 8.56 million b/d last week. Meanwhile, total domestic gasoline stocks decreased by 1.1 million bbl to 238.1 million bbl last week. Although gas demand has declined, fluctuating oil prices have increased pump prices amid tighter supply.
Today’s national average of $3.46 is three cents more than a month ago but 79 cents less than a year ago.

NEPTUNE, N.J. (AP) — Coastal communities around the world are adding a tropical twist to shoreline protection, courtesy of the humble coconut.
From the sands of the Jersey Shore to the islands of Indonesia, strands of coconut husk made into mats or rolled into logs are being incorporated into shoreline protection projects. Often used in conjunction with other measures, the coconut husk is seen as a cost-effective, readily available sustainable option. This is particularly true in developing countries, but the material is also popular in wealthy nations. One such project is being installed along an eroded river bank in Neptune, New Jersey, about a mile from the ocean.
BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate after they say a threat was made on a United Airlines flight Sunday night bound for Burlington, Vermont.
Police say the threat was made on United Airlines flight 3613, which took off from Newark, New Jersey, at 3:14 p.m. MyNBC5 reported officials say that about 20 minutes before landing at Burlington International Airport, the pilot was made aware of a threat found inside of a bathroom on the plane. The pilot notified Air Traffic Control officers, prompting a massive emergency response at the airport, which was closed for several hours. Police say law enforcement found no credible threat on the aircraft. There were no injuries and no one has been arrested

LITTLE EGG HARBOR, N.J. (AP) —Firefighters in southern New Jersey have fully contained a forest fire in the Pinelands that had threatened 16 homes Tuesday.

Eight hours after it began, the blaze was no longer considered a threat to the homes. No injuries or damage to property had occurred from the fire, which burned 418 acres. Winds gusting between 30 and 40 mph fanned the flames. But the fire was burning in a remote, uninhabited section of Little Egg Harbor Township. No one had to be evacuated, even as fire trucks and water tankers were positioned near the homes.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey utility regulators are seeking additional offshore wind farm projects to generate electricity.
The Board of Public Utilities approved a third solicitation of offshore wind projects Monday. Three wind farms have already been approved. The move comes as opponents of offshore wind push a claim that preparation work for wind farms may be responsible for a spate of whale deaths in New Jersey, New York and elsewhere this winter. Three federal scientific agencies say there is no evidence linking offshore wind activities with whale deaths. Applications for new projects are due by June 23.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A man who authorities say “ambushed” and shot at two New Jersey state troopers as they responded to a reported home break-in, leaving one trooper wounded, was arrested Friday in South Carolina.
Authorities say 28-year-old Jocquise Timmons is charged with two counts of attempted murder two weapons counts and four counts of aggravated assault. It wasn’t known if the Paterson man has retained an attorney. The charges stem from a shooting Thursday in Paterson. The troopers were driving in unmarked vehicles when shots rang out shortly before 1 a.m., striking both vehicles and leaving one trooper with a leg wound.
“The Price of Progress is The Hold Steady’s 9th studio LP. As I sit to write this, I don’t have an exact vivid memory of when we started making it. This is largely because it was part of what has become the normal flow of our band’s life: we play shows, we write songs, we record them, we release them. Making this record was a logical extension of what being The Hold Steady means to us right now, and what we’ve done for a number of years now. Here’s what I know for sure: We got together in 2021 for two different sessions a few months apart. We worked with producer Josh Kaufman and engineer Dan Goodwin at The Clubhouse studio in Rhinebeck NY. All of this was comfortable- it was the same producer, engineer and studio as we had used on our previous two records. In fact, our last LP, Open Door Policy, was just months old when we first assembled to work on these songs. As per our normal working methods, I’d been getting song ideas from Tad, Franz and Steve. I’d write lyrics to them and then we’d work on the arrangements when the band was all together in person. The songs come together quickly at first, then Josh would help us dial in on some of the finer points on the floor before recording. During each session we recorded five or six songs. We worked hard but were relaxed. We stayed on site on the studio grounds, and there were barbecues and baseball games on the lawn outside the Clubhouse tracking room. FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Historical Commission is accepting nominations for its annual Preservation Awards program, which acknowledges individuals or groups that have preserved historical structures in Monmouth County.
“Monmouth County is proud of its rich history and looks forward to acknowledging a number of honorees for their difficult and time-consuming historical preservation projects,” said County Commissioner Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the County’s Historical Commission. “I am thrilled to work with the Historical Commission to continue protecting and restoring our history through the Preservation Awards program.”
Eligible applicants include private citizens, organizations, businesses, municipalities, or any group that recently preserved a historic structure. The nominated property should be a building or structure historically noteworthy in some way and at least 50 years old. The deadline to submit a nomination is April 7, 2023.
Last year, the Historical Commission recognized Albert Wilcox and Jeffery Rudell for substantially restoring their 1887 Queen Anne Victorian House located at 112 Main Ave. in Ocean Grove, Leslie and Jay Eaton were recognized for adaptively restoring their George Barlow 1892 Horse Barn and Carriage House located at 916 Broad St. in Shrewsbury and Preston Filozof was recognized for rescuing and restoring his 1720 Dutch-framed Colonial House, known as Maple Hall, located at 409 Rt. 537, Colts Neck.

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. (AP) — Residents of low-income New Jersey communities that would get a second gas-fired power plant are urging the governor to stop the project.
They say it flies in the face of an environmental justice law that Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed over two years ago. The law has yet to take full effect. Competitive Power Ventures already operates one gas-fired power plant in Woodbridge, south of Newark. It wants to build a second one next to it. The company is pitching it as a reliable backup source for solar and wind energy. But neighbors in minority communities say the second plant will add pollution to an area already suffering from it.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy has unveiled a $53.1 billion budget for fiscal year 2024.
That’s about 5% more than this year’s spending plan. The proposal includes more school aid, renewing a property tax rebate program and billions more for public pensions, transportation and other projects. The governor’s proposal would make some of his campaign promises a reality. He wants to make a full payment to the state’s public pension fund and finance K-12th grade education according to a formula approved by the state Supreme Court. Murphy announced his budget proposal during a speech Tuesday. New Jersey’s constitutional deadline to enact a balanced budget is June 30.

BRIDGETON, N.J. (AP) — A woman convicted of killing her toddler son four years ago and telling police he had been kidnapped before his remains were found buried in the yard of her New Jersey home has been sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.
Jurors in Cumberland County last month convicted 28-year-old Nakira Griner of Bridgeton of charges of first-degree murder, desecration of remains, evidence-tampering and false public alarm in the February 2019 death of 23-month-old Daniel Griner Jr. NJ.com reports that family members tearfully expressed grief last week before a judge delivered a blistering assessment of her actions and imposed the sentence.
SEA ISLE CITY, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a balcony on a high rise condominium on the New Jersey shore collapsed onto a lower balcony, killing a construction worker.
Sea Isle City officials said the eighth-floor balcony at the Spinnaker condominium collapsed onto the seventh-floor balcony shortly before 2:30 p.m. Friday. Officials said one worker was trapped and two others sustained minor injuries at the nine-story complex built in the 1970s. Officials said 43-year-old Jose Pereira of Philadelphia, a contractor working on the outside of the building, died after being pinned under a concrete slab. Police and the Cape May County prosecutor’s office are investigating, as is the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Josh Ritter has been thinking a lot about space exploration. It has nothing to do with his spellbinding new album, Spectral Lines, except that in a way, it really does. “The Voyager spacecraft went up in ’77 and now it’s out there in a place that no one’s ever been before, and it’s sending back all these messages,” Ritter says. “I feel like songs do that in their own little way. They’re probes: they go out into the world, and sometimes you hear stories back from them, but really, they go off on their own.” Ritter, too, is sending back messages, in the form of 10 new songs that are atmospheric and impressionistic. Like the recently launched Webb Telescope, or Voyager all those years ago, he’s looking for signs of life, reaching for a sense of commonality, something that feels universal in this infinite universe. Spectral Lines, his 11th album, finds those shared experiences in songs that push beyond the bounds of Ritter’s previous work.

The Park System’s Sunnyside Equestrian Center provides a safe place for students to enjoy the freedom of riding and handling a horse.
With roots dating back to the early 1970’s, the therapeutic riding program continues to grow today. Students from the age of four through adulthood enjoy the many benefits of therapeutic horsemanship. Instructors and students work together in SPUR lessons to attain desired physical, cognitive, and/or emotional goals using a variety of Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies. NORTH WILDWOOD, N.J. (AP) — The sandstorm being waged between New Jersey environmental officials and a defiant shore town bolstering its dunes without state permission is intensifying.
The Department of Environmental Protection has fined North Wildwood over $12 million for unauthorized work along its beachfront, including the destruction of vegetated sand dunes and wetlands and the construction of a bulkhead. North Wildwood is suing the state for $21 million for failing to clear the way for what its leaders call a badly needed beach replenishment project. But that project appears to be closer at hand: the last two towns that needed to give approval for the work agreed to it on Wednesday, and an announcement of when the beaches might be widened is expected soon.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Officials in New Jersey’s capital city are calling for an investigation into security measures at an arena where a man was stabbed to death during a high school basketball game last week.
Mercer County prosecutors say 23-year-old Khalil Glanton died at a hospital after he was stabbed multiple times Thursday night at the CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton. The Trenton City Council is calling for the county to investigate security measures and wants city police to investigate “any possible security breakdowns or breaches.” Mayor W. Reed Gusciora earlier called for a similar probe and vowed additional security for an upcoming tournament at Trenton Central High School.
LINCROFT, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners invites employers to register for the 2023 spring job fair being held at the Robert J. Collins Arena at Brookdale Community College on Tuesday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — A decorative helicopter has fallen into a swimming pool at a New Jersey water park, injuring four people.
One person was taken to a hospital and three others were treated at the scene after the object crashed from the ceiling Sunday afternoon at the DreamWorks Water Park in East Rutherford. According to the Associated Press none of the injuries were life-threatening. Authorities say the venue was evacuated and an investigation will take place. DreamWorks Water Park is part of the American Dream shopping and entertainment complex located about 13 miles west of New York City in the Meadowlands Sports Complex.
OCEAN CITY, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey utility regulators have used a controversial law enabling them to bypass local authorities and grant approvals needed for an offshore wind project to proceed. The state Board of Public Utilities on Friday granted Orsted, the Danish wind energy developer, approvals toward several easements and permits that authorities in Cape May County had refused to approve. They used an amendment to New Jersey’s offshore wind law passed in 2021 and signed into law by Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy removing most local control over where offshore wind projects come ashore. The law enables an offshore wind developer to apply to the utilities board for an order superseding local control over such projects.
FREEHOLD – A fatal shooting that took place in Neptune Township last summer remains under active investigation, and authorities are again requesting that members of the public come forward with information that could help solve the crime, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago said Friday.
The shooting happened just before 1:45 a.m. on Monday, July 4, 2022, after which members of the Neptune Township Police Department responded to a report of gunfire. Upon their arrival, officers located 26-year-old Ayres Gray, Jr. of Manalapan in a parked vehicle on South Concourse, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Gray was then rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased approximately one hour later.
Members of the Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes Bureau and the Neptune Township Police Department are continuing to investigate this matter. NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey aims to have its entire economy powered by clean energy, end the sale of gasoline powered vehicles and greatly accelerate a switch to electric heating of buildings by 2035 or sooner.
Gov. Phil Murphy announced plans Wednesday to make New Jersey a national leader in clean energy. But those plans quickly drew pushback — and not just from business groups that called them costly and ill-defined. Some environmentalists say they don’t move the state away from fossil fuel use quickly enough. Murphy’s plans also call for a study of the future of natural gas utilities in New Jersey.
West Long Branch, NJ – Artificial intelligence. We’ve heard about it. We use it. But we are not necessarily comfortable with what the future holds.
The Monmouth University Poll finds awareness of AI developments has increased over the past decade, but opinion about its potential impact remains largely unchanged, with a few exceptions. Most Americans express concern about the impact of new products such as ChatGPT and offer their support to the use of AI in just a few types of applications. That skepticism comes even though nearly half actually use one form of AI – voice recognition – on a regular basis.
One-third (35%) of the public reports hearing a lot about recent artificial intelligence developments regarding the ability of computers and machines to carry out decision-making thought processes similar to humans. This level of awareness is much higher than eight years ago (12%). The biggest increase has been among younger adults. In 2015, just 12% of 18- to 34-year-olds heard a lot about recent developments in the field. Today, nearly half (45%) this age group says the same. Overall, more men (46%) than women (24%) have heard a lot about recent AI developments. Fully 9 in 10 Americans (91%) are aware of the term artificial intelligence, which is up from 70% in 2015.
One of the newer AI products is ChatGPT, an application that can have conversations and write entire essays based on a few human prompts. Six in ten (60%) Americans have heard about this product and 72% believe there will be a time when entire news articles will be written by artificial intelligence. However, very few see this as a positive development. In fact, more than 3 in 4 (78%) say that news articles written by AI would be a bad thing. Furthermore, 65% say it is very likely that AI programs such as ChatGPT will be used by students to cheat on their schoolwork.
“AI has started to permeate every facet of life. Most Americans are skeptical that this is a good thing, even though many of them use some form of artificial intelligence on a regular basis already,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.
Overall, only 1 in 10 (9%) Americans believe computer scientists’ ability to develop AI would do more good than harm to society. The remainder are divided between saying AI would do equal amounts of harm and good (46%) or that it would actually do more harm to society overall (41%). These results are largely unchanged from Monmouth’s poll in 2015, but public opinion continues to be more pessimistic about AI’s impact than it was a generation ago. When this same question was asked in 1987 by Cambridge Reports/Research International, 20% of Americans said AI would do more good than harm, 29% expected equal amounts of harm and good, and 39% said it would do more harm overall.
Nearly 3 in 4 (73%) Americans feel that machines with the ability to think for themselves would hurt jobs and the economy. Also, a majority (56%) say that artificially intelligent machines would hurt humans’ overall quality of life. These results on AI’s daily impact are basically the same as eight years ago. However, existential fears about humanity’s relationship with artificial intelligence have increased. A majority (55%) of Americans are now worried at least somewhat that artificially intelligent machines could one day pose a risk to the human race’s existence. This marks a reversal from Monmouth’s 2015 poll, when a smaller number (44%) was worried and a majority (55%) was not. Concern about the possible AI threat to human existence decreases with age – from 61% of those age 55 and older, to 55% of those ages 35 to 54, and 46% of those ages 18 to 34. However, the level of concern is similar for people who have been paying a lot of attention to AI news and those who have heard only a little or nothing about recent developments.
Some political leaders have floated the idea of having a federal agency regulate the use of artificial intelligence similar to how the FDA regulates the approval of drugs and medical devices. A majority (55%) of the public favors a general proposal for an AI regulatory agency, while 41% are opposed. The broadest level of support for this type of agency comes from adults under 35 years old (76%) – compared with just under half of those age 35 and older who agree. More Democrats (70%) and independents (56%) than Republicans (36%) support having a federal regulatory agency for AI.
“It seems as if some people view AI not just as a technological and economic concern, but also as a public health matter,” said Murray.
Monmouth pollsters tested reaction to six practical applications involving artificial intelligence, five of which were also asked about in 2015. For the new item in the poll – using facial recognition technology that can identify and monitor people who try to enter public places such as stadiums – a majority (54%) see it as a good idea while 41% say it is a bad idea. Interestingly, those who have heard a lot of recent developments in the field (45%) are less likely to endorse this use of AI than are those who have heard only a little (56%) or nothing (71%) about these developments.
“Facial recognition has been in the news recently, such as theaters using it to bar entry to lawyers who are suing them and unreliability of the technology depending on the person’s race. My guess is that people who have been following the news closely are more likely to be aware of these incidents and are concerned about their misuse, whereas those not paying as much attention are thinking primarily of immediate safety threats when asked about the use of facial recognition technology,” said Murray.

The only other application tested in the poll that is seen as a good idea by most Americans is using AI machines to perform risky jobs such as coal mining (75%). For other possible uses asked about in the poll, only about one-third of the public feels they are good ideas, including machines that monitor and make decisions about safety operations at nuclear power plants (38%), self-driven local delivery trucks (35%), armed military drones that can distinguish enemy combatants from civilians and decide which buildings to attack (34%), and robotic nurses for bedridden patients that can diagnose situations and administer medicine (33%). Compared to public opinion eight years ago, positive reaction to AI military drones has dropped slightly while support for self-driving delivery trucks has increased a bit, but is still clearly in the minority. Otherwise, public opinion of specific AI applications is largely in line with Monmouth’s 2015 poll.
“There is a lot of skepticism about certain real-world applications for artificial intelligence. It is interesting that familiarity with AI increases support for some uses but actually leads to a more negative reaction for other possible uses,” said Murray.
The Monmouth University Poll finds nearly half (47%) of the American public relies on computer technology a great deal in their daily lives – up from 37% eight years ago. This includes 71% of 18- to 35-year-olds (up from 43% in 2015), 53% of 35- to 54-year-olds (up from 42%), and 25% of those age 55 and older (unchanged from 26%).
Just under half report using one particular AI technology – voice recognition – on a weekly basis, including 23% who do so every day, 16% who do so several times a week, and 7% who do this once a week. Just under 1 in 4 (38%) Americans say they never use a voice recognition toll like Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant. About half of those under age 55 and one-third of those age 55 and older use voice recognition technology at least weekly.
The Monmouth University Poll was conducted by telephone from January 26 to 30, 2023 with 805 adults in the United States. The question results in this release have a margin of error of +/- 5.7 percentage points for the full sample. The poll was conducted by the Monmouth University Polling Institute in West Long Branch, NJ.

METHODOLOGY
The Monmouth University Poll was sponsored and conducted by the Monmouth University Polling Institute from January 26 to 30, 2023 with a probability-based national random sample of 805 adults age 18 and older. This includes 281 contacted by a live interviewer on a landline telephone and 524 contacted by a live interviewer on a cell phone, in English. Telephone numbers were selected through a mix of random digit dialing and list-based sampling. Landline respondents were selected with a modified Troldahl-Carter youngest adult household screen. Interviewing services were provided by Braun Research, with sample obtained from Dynata (RDD, n= 569), Aristotle (list, n= 152) and a panel of prior Monmouth poll participants (n= 84). Monmouth is responsible for all aspects of the survey design, data weighting and analysis. The full sample is weighted for region, age, education, gender and race based on US Census information (ACS 2021 one-year survey). For results based on this sample, one can say with 95% confidence that the error attributable to sampling has a maximum margin of plus or minus 5.7 percentage points (adjusted for sample design effects). Sampling error can be larger for sub-groups (see table below). In addition to sampling error, one should bear in mind that question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of opinion polls.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Residents of largely minority areas in New Jersey are fighting three proposed gas-fired power plants as they wait for the state’s environmental law _ signed with great fanfare nearly three years ago _ to take full effect.
According to the Associated Press, residents in and around Newark, Kearny and Woodbridge are opposing power plants proposed for their areas _ all of which already are burdened with multiple sources of pollution. Gov. Phil Murphy says he signed the nation’s toughest environmental justice law in 2020, designed to protect already overburdened communities. But the law won’t take full effect until June at the earliest.
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A school superintendent in New Jersey says the Michigan State University gunman was found with a note in his pocket indicating a threat to two schools there.
According to the Associated Press, Ewing Public Schools Superintendent David Gentile said in a statement Tuesday that the district closed for the day. The statement was based on information from police and said it was later determined there was no threat to the district. The statement says the gunman, Anthony McRae, had ties to Ewing Township but had not lived in the area for several years. Authorities in Michigan are still trying to determine McRae’s motive for the university shooting.
MANASQUAN, NJ – The Monmouth County Department of Public Works and Engineering assisted the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC), the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and the Borough of Manasquan with the removal of a deceased humpback whale at the Manasquan Inlet beach this morning.

“On behalf of the Board of County Commissioners, I would like to commend our Public Works employees along with our federal, state and local partners including the Boroughs of Sea Girt and Spring Lake, who assisted in this removal operation,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “Group efforts like this are examples of the County’s commitment to our partners and residents.”
According to NOAA Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office, the humpback whale was reported to the MMSC on Monday, Feb. 13. Necropsy teams from MMSC and Atlantic Marine Conservation Society were on scene this morning to gather information about this whale and plan for a necropsy. The decision was made to move the whale to a County facility for examination and tissue sampling. Necropsy teams will have access to heavy equipment and resources that will enable a complete examination. The whale has been identified as a juvenile female, about 35 feet long.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — For years, some New Jersey lawmakers have introduced bills that would ban smoking in Atlantic City’s casinos.
But those measures went nowhere. However, on Monday a state Senate committee will hold the first discussion on a bill that would close a loophole in New Jersey’s indoor smoking law to prohibit smoking in the nine casinos. Many workers say secondhand smoke from customers is making them sick, but casino executives fear losing jobs and revenue if a smoking ban is implemented. No vote will be taken on the bill Monday, but Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy has promised to sign it into law if it passes the Legislature.
WASHINGTON (AP) — For the first time in his administration, President Joe Biden hosted the dinner for members of the National Governors Association at the White House. The dinner was held last year at Mount Vernon, George Washington’s Virginia estate, and virtually in 2021 because of COVID-19. According to the Associated Press, there was a palpable sense of, well, togetherness and not just because the room was tightly packed with governors, spouses and Cabinet members. Biden and both associations’ leaders, Republican Gov. Spencer Cox of Utah and Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy of New Jersey, spoke about the need to put aside the increasingly rancorous political differences to work together to better the nation.
BAYVILLE, N.J. (AP) — Authorities have filed charges against four students over a recorded attack against a 14-year-old New Jersey student in the hallway of her school.
According to the Associated Press, the video of her being beaten was spread on social media last week, days before her family says Adriana Kuch took her own life. Prosecutors in Ocean County, New Jersey, said Saturday they charged one juvenile with aggravated assault, two with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and one with harassment. The New Jersey school district announced the resignation of its superintendent Saturday. Adriana’s family says they found her body on Feb. 3, two days after her beating beside school lockers at Central Regional High School in Bayville.

A Monmouth County town has added its name to municipalities banning short-term rentals. The law was passed by a 5 to 1 margin at Wednesday night’s council meeting in Red Bank. It forbids rentals such as Airbnb in residential zones in the town. During the meeting residents spoke of how short-term rentals keep them living in Red Bank.
Kate Triggiano, the council member with the lone dissenting vote said, “In the public comments we received, homeowners who provide short term rents shared how their guests include actors performing at Two River Theatre, traveling nurses, people with family members in Riverview hospital, people who are renovating their homes, and so on.” She went on to say, “Taking away this right will make their homes unaffordable.”

After an over 4 decade career in politics Joseph Vicari will retire. Vicari served as Ocean County Freeholder, then Commissioner since 1981. In a statement from his office that “After much soul-searching, today I am announcing that I will not seek reelection to the Ocean County Board of Commissioners.”
With 14 terms served he is the New Jersey’s longest serving County Commissioner. He plans on serving out his term as Commissioner Director until December 31st.
The US Attorney’s Office has reached a settlement with an Ocean County nail salon after allegations of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. In an announcement yesterday, USA Nails of Point Pleasant will pay $1,000 in damages to an individual who was refused service because they were in a wheelchair. The salon also agreement to post their non-discrimination policy and train present and future employees about accommodations. The Americans With Disability Act, also known as the ADA passed in 1990 is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in all areas of public life.
FREEHOLD – A local man who murdered a family friend in 2019 and then set her home on fire has been sentenced to life in prison, Monmouth County First Assistant Prosecutor Julia Alonso announced Wednesday.
Ronald J. Teschner, 53, was sentenced yesterday in connection with the death of 65-year-old Jacqueline C. Terrulli.
Shortly after 7:30 a.m. on the morning of Thursday, September 12, 2019, firefighters and other first responders rushed to a home on Wickapecko Drive in Ocean Township that was engulfed in flames. Once the fire was put out, a joint investigation by members of the Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau and Forensic Bureau, the Monmouth County Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Ocean Township Police Department determined that two residents of the home were unaccounted for: Teschner and Terrulli, the homeowner. Terrulli’s vehicle, a white Jeep Cherokee, was also missing from the property.
The next morning, on Friday, September 13, 2019, members of the Ocean Township Police Department located the Cherokee parked on a residential street in Paterson, a little more than an hour’s drive north. Teschner was located in the driver’s seat, and recovered from the vehicle were two shotguns, a quantity of fentanyl, and jewelry and other items belonging to Terrulli.
Teschner remained lodged in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution (MCCI) following his arrest, and Murder charges were filed against him in December 2019. A Monmouth County Grand Jury then returned a 16-count indictment in the case in February 2020.
Later that year, on Thursday, June 18, 2020, as demolition and site remediation work was being performed on the Wickapecko Drive property, human remains that would later be identified as belonging to Terrulli were found wrapped in plastic and buried several feet underground. As a result of the fire, charred rubble had collapsed upon and covered the remains, initially concealing them from detection.
The case against Teschner proceeded to trial late last year, and his prosecution was handled by Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutors Joseph Cummings and Katherine Butler, who presented evidence at trial including witness testimony, cell-phone records, and physical evidence showing that the murder took place while Terrulli’s mother and two siblings were away in Atlantic City. The month-long trial before Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Joseph W. Oxley concluded in October 2022, resulting in Teschner being convicted of first-degree Murder, first-degree Felony Murder, first-degree Robbery, three first-degree weapons offenses, second-degree Aggravated Arson, second-degree Desecration of Human Remains, third-degree Aggravated Assault, third-degree Burglary, third-degree Robbery, three counts of third-degree Theft, a third-degree drug offense, and fourth-degree Resisting Arrest.
During yesterday’s sentencing hearing, Terrulli was described as an abundantly generous and kind person who had allowed Teschner to live in her home.
“Yesterday’s sentencing was commensurate with the abhorrent nature of these crimes,” First Assistant Prosecutor Alonso added. “We again extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Jacqueline Terrulli, with the hope that the conclusion of the criminal case brings them some degree of satisfaction in knowing that justice has been served on her behalf.”

In a note Backstreets.com’s publisher Christoper Phillips said he’s been disillusioned by the talk about ticket prices for their hero’s current tour. Backstreets, active as both a website and magazine which started 43 years ago. It was a favorite of fans for its unusual journalistic rigor while leaving no doubt of its fan worship. But its publisher wrote that complaints among some fans about high prices for the Springsteen tour that began in Tampa on Feb. In the note Phillips mentioned Backstreet’s social media presence will continue.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey’s top law enforcement official has brought criminal charges against a Paterson Police officer he says shot a fleeing person in the back, wounding him severely.
Attorney General Matthew Platkin said Monday the state filed charges of second-degree aggravated assault and official misconduct against Officer Jerry Moravek. According to the Associated Press, the charges stem from a June 2022 incident in which Moravek saw the victim, who is not identified in the charging documents, run past him soon after hearing gunshots. Moravek fired at the person, striking him in the back. Moravek’s attorney says he has been falsely accused.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — The gambling industry’s national trade group predicts that 1 in 5 American adults will make a bet on Sunday’s Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs.
According to the Associated Press, The American Gaming Association says over 50 million U.S. adults plan to bet on the game, wagering a total of $16 million. That’s more than twice the amount that was expected to be wagered on last year’s Super Bowl. Sports betting is legal in 33 states plus Washington, D.C., this year, up from 30 states last year. The group’s survey finds bettors evenly split, with 44% backing the Eagles and an identical 44% putting their money on the Chiefs.
FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners is proud to announce that the County has been awarded the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Comprehensive Action Safety Plan Grant in partnership with Bradley Beach, Highlands, and Holmdel, totaling $1.18 million in funding.
“Monmouth County is thrilled to be awarded the SS4A grant which will be used to develop, complete, or supplement a comprehensive safety action plan,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “The action plans will seek to identify and implement low?cost, high-impact strategies, and will explore innovative technologies and strategies promoting safety and equity.”
“As the lead applicant, the County will provide guidance for planning and administration to the towns included in the application,” said Commissioner Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the Division of Planning. “Once an Action Plan is complete, the County can apply for funds for an Implementation Grant which would be the implementation of the recommendations in the Action Plan.”
“Safety of our residents and visitors is one of our highest priorities,” said Commissioner Ross F. Licitra, commissioner liaison to the Planning Board. “Bradley Beach, Highlands, Holmdel, and the Monmouth County Division of Planning will develop Comprehensive Safety Action Plans for each of their jurisdictions addressing issues related to speed and infrastructure, as well as detailing and recommending behavioral and policy interventions that encourage sobriety, patience, focus, seatbelt use, and modal choice.”

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey man who exchanged sexually explicit videos and images with a 13-year-old girl has admitted paying $20,000 in bitcoin to have the child victim murdered.
According to the Associated Press, He eventually called it off. Federal prosecutors say John Michael Musbach pleaded guilty Thursday to using interstate commerce facilities in the commission of a murder-for-hire plot. The 31-year-old Haddonfield man now faces up to 10 years in prison when he’s sentenced June 13. Prosecutors say he used a site on the dark web that claimed to offer contract killings in return for payment in cryptocurrency. The site turned out to be a scam. Authorities learned of the plot when an informant provided messages between Musbach and the website.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gas prices dipped in New Jersey and around the country at large as cold weather descended on parts of the nation following an unusually warm January.
According to the Associated Press, AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in New Jersey on Friday was $3.42, down three cents from last week. The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.49, down a penny from last week. Analysts say the return of wintery conditions in February may result in the return of seasonal driving patterns, and prices may drop further if demand doesn’t spike and crude oil prices remain below $80 per barrel.

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (AP) — A man suspected of throwing a Molotov cocktail at the front door of a synagogue in northern New Jersey last weekend has been taken into custody.
According to the Associated Press, Nicholas Malindretos is charged with attempted use of fire to damage and destroy a building. The 26-year-old Clifton man was due to make his initial appearance Thursday in federal court in Newark, and it wasn’t known if he has an attorney. The incident occurred early Sunday at Temple Ner Tamid in Bloomfield. Authorities say a man lit a Molotov cocktail and threw it at the door. They say the glass bottle broke but didn’t cause any damage to the temple, and the suspect fled down the driveway.

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey beach town that defied state environmental authorities and fixed its dunes after a fall storm caused serious erosion can proceed with a lawsuit seeking to recover $21 million it spent bulking up its shoreline over the past decade.
But North Wildwood will not be allowed to build a bulkhead to permanently thwart the waves following a judge’s ruling Wednesday. According to the Associated Press the city already defied the state Department of Environmental Protection and made emergency repairs to its beach in October after the remnants of Hurricane Ian passed by, chewing huge chunks out of the dunes. The judge also ordered the city to reapply for permission to do emergency beach repairs.
West Long Branch, NJ – More Americans believe former President Donald Trump knew about the classified documents in his possession than those who say the same about either President Joe Biden or former Vice President Mike Pence. However, Republicans show much more concern about the potential national security threats posed by Biden’s documents than about Trump’s. The opposite is true among Democrats. The Monmouth University Poll finds that the classified documents issue does not seem to have affected Biden’s job rating. The poll also finds mixed reviews and low awareness of the new leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives.
About 6 in 10 Americans (58%) believe Biden knew there were classified documents in his home, which is close to the number who say Pence was aware (50%). However, far more (80%) believe Trump knew about the classified documents in his possession. About 4 in 10 are very concerned that the classified documents found in either Trump’s (40%) or Biden’s (38%) homes would pose a threat to national security if they fell into the wrong hands. Fewer (22%) say they are very concerned about the threat posed by Pence’s documents.
There are some significant partisan differences in public opinion on the classified documents matter. Somewhat more Democrats (91%) than Republicans (72%) believe Trump was aware of the presence of classified documents at his home, while many more Republicans (79%) than Democrats (39%) believe Biden was aware. When it comes to being very concerned about the national security implications of these documents, the partisan splits are similar for Trump (62% of Democrats and just 14% of Republicans) and Biden (62% of Republicans and just 20% of Democrats).
“Obviously, we don’t know exactly what was contained in any of these classified documents. But partisans are already inclined to believe that the other party’s guy took more sensitive information than their own guy,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.
Interestingly, there is not much partisanship evident in opinion about the documents in Pence’s possession. About half of all partisan groups think the former vice president knew about the presence of these documents in his home. Close to 1 in 4 Republicans, Democrats, and independents are very concerned about their national security implications, although Republicans are somewhat more likely than others to say they are not too concerned.
The poll also finds that most Americans (85%) believe other former presidents and vice presidents are likely to have some classified documents in their homes and offices. Just 24% are very concerned these documents could pose a national security threat if they fell into the wrong hands. There are no partisan differences in public opinion on these questions regarding other former officeholders.
Turning to overall performance ratings for the current president, 43% approve of the job Biden is doing as president while 48% disapprove. The current rating is similar to December (42% approve and 50% disapprove) before the classified documents story broke. Biden’s rating dipped as low as 36% approve and 58% disapprove in June.
“The initial fallout from the classified documents discovery has been ‘no harm, no foul’ for Biden so far,” said Murray.
The poll also asked about the performance of congressional leadership. Now that Kevin McCarthy has taken the gavel as Speaker of the House, 19% approve of the job he is doing and 35% disapprove. Nearly half (46%) of the American public doesn’t know enough about him to form an opinion. The current results are only slightly different from the ratings he earned in December when he was still the minority leader. The main change has been a positive shift among his fellow Republicans, from 29% approve and 20% disapprove at the end of last year to 41% approve and 11% disapprove in the current poll. Still, about half (48%) of Republicans have no opinion of him.

McCarthy’s GOP counterpart in the U.S. Senate, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, on the other hand, remains the least popular congressional leader. He earns negative ratings from the public as a whole (12% approve and 52% disapprove) as well as among his fellow Republicans (15%–45%). On the Democratic side of the aisle, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer earns a negative 24% approve and 37% disapprove rating from all Americans, but a positive 54% to 9% rating among Democrats. Only about one-third of the public has an opinion of the newly elected House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, registering a split of 18% approve and 16% disapprove. Among his fellow Democrats, Jeffries earns a positive 37% approve and 7% disapprove rating, although a majority have not formed an opinion of him yet. Before former Speaker Nancy Pelosi left her leadership post, she held an overwhelmingly positive 69% approve and 10% disapprove rating among her fellow Democrats.
“Despite the drama of 15 rounds of voting, McCarthy starts his speakership as a relatively unknown commodity,” said Murray.
Public opinion on the job the U.S. Congress is doing overall stands at 19% approve and 67% disapprove. This is slightly more negative than in December (26% approve and 62% disapprove).
The Monmouth University Poll was conducted by telephone from January 26 to 30, 2022 with 805 adults in the United States. The question results in this release have a margin of error of +/- 5.7 percentage points for the full sample. The poll was conducted by the Monmouth University Polling Institute in West Long Branch, NJ.

METHODOLOGY
The Monmouth University Poll was sponsored and conducted by the Monmouth University Polling Institute from January 26 to 30, 2023 with a probability-based national random sample of 805 adults age 18 and older. This includes 281 contacted by a live interviewer on a landline telephone and 524 contacted by a live interviewer on a cell phone, in English. Telephone numbers were selected through a mix of random digit dialing and list-based sampling. Landline respondents were selected with a modified Troldahl-Carter youngest adult household screen. Interviewing services were provided by Braun Research, with sample obtained from Dynata (RDD, n= 569), Aristotle (list, n= 152) and a panel of prior Monmouth poll participants (n= 84). Monmouth is responsible for all aspects of the survey design, data weighting and analysis. The full sample is weighted for region, age, education, gender and race based on US Census information (ACS 2021 one-year survey). For results based on this sample, one can say with 95% confidence that the error attributable to sampling has a maximum margin of plus or minus 5.7 percentage points (adjusted for sample design effects). Sampling error can be larger for sub-groups (see table below). In addition to sampling error, one should bear in mind that question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of opinion polls.

FREEHOLD – A Monmouth County Grand Jury has returned an indictment against an Ocean County man in connection with the killing of his wife and leaving her body on the side of the road in Ocean Township, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced Tuesday.
Jeremy B. Cruz, 51, of Forked River, is charged with first-degree Murder in connection with death of 51-year-old Dawn C. Cruz.
At approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2022, a woman who appeared to have sustained severe injuries was observed by a concerned motorist at the intersection of Asbury and Colonial Avenues in the Township of Ocean. Ocean Township Police Department officers located the victim, later identified as Dawn Cruz, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A short while later, Jeremy Cruz turned himself in to authorities at the Berkeley Township Police Department in Ocean County. A joint investigation by members of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Ocean Township Police Department, Asbury Park Police Department, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, and Berkeley Township Police Department ultimately led to the arrest and charging of Cruz.
This case is assigned to Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutors Caitlin J. Sidley of the Major Crimes Bureau and Carey Huff of the Office’s Trial Unit.
Cruz is represented by Adam S. Mitchell, Esq., of Freehold Township, New Jersey.
Despite these charges, every defendant is presumed innocent, unless and until found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, following a trial at which the defendant has all of the trial rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and State law.
BLOOMFIELD, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say they are looking for a man who threw a Molotov cocktail at the front door of a synagogue in New Jersey. According to the Associated Press, police in Bloomfield in Essex County said officers responded at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday to a report of property damage at Temple Ner Tamid, where surveillance video showed a man approaching shortly before 3:30 a.m. Sunday, lighting a Molotov cocktail and tossing it at the door. Police said the glass bottle broke but didn’t cause any damage to the temple, and the suspect fled. Police opened an attempted arson and bias incident investigation. County prosecutors, the FBI and other federal authorities are also investigating.
MORRISVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a skull found on banks of the Delaware River in Pennsylvania more than 3 1/2 decades ago has been identified as that of a man long believed slain in New Jersey along with his girlfriend, whose body had been found in the river on the New Jersey side the previous year.
According to the Associated Press, Bucks County prosecutors say DNA analysis identified the skull found on the riverbank in Morrisville in 1986 as that of 31-year-old Richard Thomas Alt, who was reported missing in Trenton in early 1985. Prosecutors say Alt and his girlfriend were suspected homicide victims, and her body was found in April 1985 in the river in Trenton.
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a 29-year-old woman used false documents to enroll as a New Jersey high school student and attended some classes over a four-day period before her scheme was discovered last week.
It’s not yet known what the woman’s intentions were, and officials say she’s been charged with providing a false document. According to the Associated Press, she reportedly got the phone numbers of students who helped her find her way through New Brunswick High School and continued to text some of them days after her ruse was discovered. She has been barred from entering school grounds in the district, and officials have advised students to not have any contact with her.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gas prices shot up in New Jersey and around the country at large amid increased demand during unusually mild weather and a slight increase in crude oil prices.
According to the Associated Press, AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in New Jersey on Friday was $3.45, up 13 cents from last week. Drivers were paying $3.39 a gallon on average a year ago at this time. The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.50, an increase of 11 cents for the second week in a row. Drivers were paying $3.34 a gallon on average a year ago at this time.

FREEHOLD – Law enforcement officials are requesting the community’s help from anyone who may have witnessed a fatal crash on Route 66 in Neptune Township Tuesday night, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced Thursday.
On January 24, 2023, at approximately 9:56 p.m., the Neptune Township Police Department responded to a crash at the intersection of Route 66 and Neptune Boulevard. The investigation revealed that a 33-year-old female driver was driving a 2014 Honda Civic eastbound on Route 66 through the intersection of Neptune Boulevard. Simultaneously, a 52-year-old male resident of the Wanamassa section of Ocean Township was riding an Ecotric Starfish Electric Bicycle southbound on Neptune Boulevard through the intersection of Route 66 when he collided with the front driver’s side corner of the Civic, propelling him onto the hood and windshield of the vehicle.
The male bicyclist was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries at 1:13 a.m. on Wednesday, January 25.
The female driver was uninjured in the crash and remained on scene. No summonses or criminal charges have been issued at this time.
The crash is under investigation by members of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Monmouth County Serious Collision Analysis Response Team (SCART), and the Neptune Township Police Department. SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico legislators are sponsoring a bill to prohibit local governments and state agencies from contracting to detain immigrants in civil cases with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and private detention facilities. The bill as introduced Tuesday could unwind contractual agreements that help detain immigrants at three privately operated detention centers in New Mexico within close driving distance of the U.S. border with Mexico. The proposal was sponsored by Democratic state Sens. Jerry Ortiz y Pino and Moe Maestas with the backing of advocacy groups. The bill resembles recently enacted legislation in New Jersey, Virginia and Illinois aimed at ending detention in civil immigration cases in local facilities.
FREEHOLD – A Monmouth County Grand Jury has returned a three-count indictment against a Long Branch man in connection with a shooting that left one victim injured, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced Wednesday.
Donte Gibson, 27, of Long Branch, is charged with one count of first-degree Attempted Murder, one count of second-degree Possession of a Firearm for an Unlawful Purpose, and one count of second-degree Unlawful Possession of a Weapon.
At approximately 9:45 p.m. on the night of Monday, October 10, 2022, West Long Branch Police responded to a convenience store on the 800 block of Broadway for a report of shots being fired. It was later discovered that a shooting victim had been dropped off at a local hospital for treatment. The victim sustained injuries to his hip and forearm, and was treated and later released.
This shooting incident was one of three that took place that same day. The two other incidents, both in Long Branch, are still under investigation at this time.

West Long Branch, NJ – A majority of New Jerseyans remain concerned about a serious Covid-related illness affecting their family nearly three years after the pandemic first hit the state.
The MonmouthUniversity Poll also finds that the number of Garden State residents who report testing positive for Covid has surpassed a majority. Still, New Jerseyans oppose, by a 2 to 1 margin, bringing back mask and social distancing guidelines. Fewer than 1 in 4 have received the bivalent booster shot that became available last fall.
A majority of New Jersey adults are concerned (27% very and 30% somewhat) about someone in their family becoming seriously ill from the coronavirus outbreak. This level of concern (57% combined) is up slightly from last year (50% in April 2022), but is lower than in 2021 when about 2 in 3 were concerned about a serious Covid illness in their family. The number of state residents who report testing positive for Covid has risen from 38% nearly a year ago to 56% in the current poll. This increase has been seen in every demographic group.
At the same time, only 1 in 3 (32%) New Jerseyans support reinstituting general face mask and social distancing guidelines in the state, while 63% are opposed. These results are virtually unchanged from last year, although this is a reversal from polls taken in 2021 when 6 in 10 backed bringing back these measures. Support for reinstituting Covid guidelines varies across party lines – from 50% of Democrats who support bringing back social distancing measures to just 26% of independents and 15% of Republicans who feel the same. Support in New Jersey for bringing back Covid guidelines is not much higher than national opinion (25% according to a Monmouth poll conducted last fall).
“New Jersey’s attitude seems to be Covid is here to stay and we’ve just got to live with it,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.
More than 8 in 10 New Jersey adults report being vaccinated for Covid, including 2 in 3 who have received a booster shot. However, only 23% of the adult population has gotten the bivalent booster which became available last September. One-third of those age 55 and older (33%) have gotten the bivalent shot versus fewer than 1 in 5 adults under 55 years old. Uptake of the new booster is more common among Democrats (35%) than among independents (18%) and Republicans (15%). On top of the nearly 1 in 4 who have gotten the new booster, another 16% say they are very likely to get it. At the other end of the spectrum, 35% say they are not at all likely to get it. Garden State residents are only slightly more willing to get the bivalent booster than all Americans based on recent Monmouth national polling.
“New Jerseyans may be vaxxed out at this point. Based on past findings, most of those who will get the new booster have already done so. If you don’t feel you are very likely to do it, you almost certainly won’t. That means it’s probable that less than half of the state population will be covered by the bivalent booster,” said Murray.
In other poll findings, Gov. Phil Murphy continues to receive broadly positive reviews for his handling of the Covid outbreak, with 66% saying he has done a good job and just 26% saying he has done a bad job. Approval of Murphy’s Covid actions come from 91% of Democrats, 61% of independents, and 37% of Republicans. His positive rating for handling Covid has never dropped below 60% since the pandemic started three years ago.
“More than a handful of Republicans give Murphy props for how he’s dealt with the pandemic, which is saying something in the current political environment. It’s just not the most important issue for state residents of any partisan stripe right now,” said Murray.
The Monmouth University Poll was conducted by telephone from January 5 to 9, 2023 with 809 New Jersey adults. The question results in this release have a margin of error of +/- 4.7 percentage points for the full sample. The poll was conducted by the Monmouth University Polling Institute in West Long Branch, NJ.

METHODOLOGY
The Monmouth University Poll was sponsored and conducted by the Monmouth University Polling Institute from January 5 to 9, 2023 with a probability-based random sample of 809 New Jersey adults age 18 and older. This includes 286 contacted by a live interviewer on a landline telephone and 523 contacted by a live interviewer on a cell phone, in English. Telephone numbers were selected through random digit dialing and landline respondents were selected with a modified Troldahl-Carter youngest adult household screen. Monmouth is responsible for all aspects of the survey design, data weighting and analysis. The full sample is weighted for region, age, education, gender and race based on US Census information (ACS 2021 one-year survey). Interviewing services were provided by Braun Research, with sample obtained from Dynata. For results based on this sample, one can say with 95% confidence that the error attributable to sampling has a maximum margin of plus or minus 4.7 percentage points (adjusted for sample design effects). Sampling error can be larger for sub-groups (see table below). In addition to sampling error, one should bear in mind that question wording and practical difficulties in conducting surveys can introduce error or bias into the findings of opinion polls.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department and eight states have sued Google, alleging that its dominance in digital advertising harms competition.
According to the Associated Press, the government alleges that Google’s plan to assert dominance has been to “neutralize or eliminate” rivals through acquisitions and to force advertisers to use its products by making it difficult to use competitors’ products. The antitrust suit was filed in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia. The states taking part in the suit include California, Virginia, Connecticut, Colorado, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Tennessee.

BANGKOK (AP) — A suspect wanted in in connection with an alleged stock manipulation scheme famously involving a small New Jersey delicatessen has agreed to voluntary extradition to the United States after being arrested last week on the resort island of Phuket.
Peter Coker Jr., a partner at a financial services company in Hong Kong., is sought by U.S. authorities on charges of fraud and shares manipulation in connection with two companies, Hometown International and E-Waste Corp, that had been traded over the counter. Two other men indicted on the same charges, were arrested in the United States last year. Hometown International, whose sole asset was a delicatessen in Paulsboro, New Jersey, had a valuation of about $100 million.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gas prices rose in New Jersey and went up more sharply around the country at large amid increased demand and higher crude oil prices. AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in New Jersey on Friday was $3.32, up five cents from last week. According to the Associated Press the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.39, an increase of 11 cents from last week. Analysts say demand for gasoline is usually lackluster at this time of year, but a mild winter in much of the country seems to have encouraged more people to get out on the road, pushing prices higher.
“Some Of Us Are Brave was a moment to pause and pay homage to Black women,” says Danielle Ponder. “My biggest cheerleaders are Black women. Bravery is what it takes to walk through this world as a Black woman, so I hope this song provides an anthem for Black women who are navigating this world with courage and strength.” In Ponder’s life, bravery manifested in the decision to leave her successful day job as a public defender to pursue singing and songwriting full time. Ponder had always been musical but chose to pursue a career in law after her brother received a 20-year sentence due to a “three strikes” law. But even as she became a tireless advocate for justice in her community—first as a public defender and later as a diversity, equity and inclusion officer in that same office—the music was never far; she remembers a time when she did a small tour in Europe and was back in court the following Monday. There eventually came a time to choose one, and so she leapt.

The mission of Asbury Park-based Community Affairs and Resource center is to empower the community and strengthen youth and families by promoting self-sufficiency through education, advocacy, and collaboration. Community Affairs & Resource Center (CARC) – formerly known as Hispanic Affairs and Resource Center, provides a variety of programs and services which operate from two sites: the main office located in Asbury Park and satellite offices in Freehold, Keyport and Lakewood. These sites are accessible via public transportation. CARC services all people regardless of age, race, creed, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation or functional capacity. Originally, the population served by CARC was primarily Hispanics of Caribbean descent. Today, CARC clients are diverse, consisting of Hispanics of various descents, Haitians, African Americans and Caucasians. Social services are provided to economically disadvantaged individuals and families throughout Monmouth County with the goal of revitalizing the communities served. CARC is one of the very few service providers in Monmouth County that can effectively provide multi-lingual/multi-cultural diversity in its services. Through this multi-lingual and multi-cultural approach, CARC serves as proactive agent for individuals and families whose needs may otherwise go unmet due to language barriers, discrimination and lack of cultural competency.

NEW YORK (AP) — Party City is filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after struggling with rising prices and a pullback in customer spending. According to the Associated Press, the company, which operates more than 800 company-owned and franchise stores throughout North America, has faced increased competition from Walmart and Target. That pressure has intensified in an era of rising prices, including for helium used in party balloons, and slowing consumer demand. The company has secured a commitment for $150 million in debtor-in-possession financing. It said the financing, which is subject to court approval, would provide ample cash to continue operations.
CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Campbell’s Soup Co. plans to spend about $50 million to upgrade of its headquarters in New Jersey as it consolidates the central offices of snacks businesses from North Carolina and Connecticut. The company announced Wednesday it will add about 330 positions at the site in Camden, bringing the total jobs there to about 1,600. It said the move will drive greater creativity, collaboration and career development at the company. According to the Associated Press, the jobs are moving from a Snyder’s-Lance plant in Charlotte, North Carolina and the Pepperidge Farm headquarters in Norwalk, Connecticut. Campbell’s says having one snacks headquarters is expected to save the company $10 million within a few years.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Danish wind energy developer Orsted will become the sole owner of the first offshore wind farm planned for New Jersey. The company says it is buying the remaining 25% ownership stake in Ocean Wind 1 from New Jersey-based Public Service Enterprise Group. According to the Associated Press, no dollar amount was given for the transaction and Orsted did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday. The 1,100 megawatt project to be located about 15 miles off the coast of southern New Jersey is expected to generate enough electricity to power about a half-million homes. Orsted also has approval to build a second project adjacent to the first one.

OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) — The Coast Guard says seven people were rescued offshore in Ocean City, Maryland. WTOP-FM reports that a crew member on the tug Legacy notified the Coast Guard early Saturday that a 1,000-foot towing line became entangled and then snapped while towing a 290-foot barge from New Jersey to Guyana. The Coast Guard said in a news release that an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, New Jersey, and an MH-60 Jayhawk crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, hoisted the seven people from the Legacy. They were transported to Ocean City Municipal Airport. There were no reported injuries.
POMPTON LAKES, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a New Jersey house where smoke had been reported exploded with volunteer firefighters inside, injuring five and sending two to a hospital for treatment of burns. The Pompton Lakes Volunteer Fire Department in Passaic County said on its Facebook page that crews were dispatched at about 2:15 a.m. Saturday and were using a thermal imaging camera when “the home literally exploded.” All were able to get out on their own. Two were sent to a hospital where they were treated for burns and released. Three others were treated for minor injuries at the scene. A state fire marshal and Public Service Electric & Gas are investigating.
BRIGANTINE, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey’s governor says he does not think undersea preparations for offshore wind farms should be halted in response to a recent spate of whale deaths in New Jersey and New York. Democrat Phil Murphy spoke after lawmakers at the local, state and federal levels called Friday for a temporary pause in ocean floor preparation work for offshore wind projects in the two states after another dead whale washed ashore in Brigantine, near Atlantic City. Also on Friday, most of New Jersey’s environmental groups warned against linking offshore wind work and whale deaths, calling such associations “unfounded and premature.” The death was the seventh in a little over a month.
Kalmia Traver and Alex Toth, the group’s front persons, co-writers and co-producers, first began a friendship as jazz students at the University of Vermont. Soon after, they formed Rubblebucket, using the project to delve into pop, funk, dance and psychedelia; performances have spanned Bonnaroo to Glastonbury to their self-curated Dream Picnic Festival, and they’ve collaborated with kindred genre-blenders including Arcade Fire and Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears. But before their musical relationship, Traver and Toth initially bonded over another shared passion: the two were part of UVM’s Sustainable Community Development program. Since their last full length, 2018’s Sun Machine, Rubblebucket’s songwriters have recorded extensively with other projects. Traver, usually a saxophonist, poured dance sensibilities into Kalbells, a rhythmic indie quartet in which she plays keyboards. Toth, who dove into punk catharsis with his band Alexander F, went interior for T?th, a solo project inspired by Arthur Russell’s serendipitous sparseness. “By doing multiple records on our own and together, you just get better and better at understanding the process,” says Toth. That process includes “song-a-day” workshops, an ecstatic endeavor the band likens to “spiritual upheaval.”

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — A man who helped set fire to a police vehicle in New Jersey’s capital city during protests against racial injustice following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis has been sentenced to more than two years in federal prison. Kadeem Dockery was the last of four men sentenced to prison terms in connection with the May 31, 2020 riots in Trenton. The 31-year-old Trenton man received a 27-month term Tuesday, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors have said Dockery lit an explosive device and tossed it through the open front driver’s side window of a Trenton police vehicle. He then removed his shirt and gave it to another man, who tried to stuff it in the car’s gas tank and ignite it.
Asbury Park, NJ – January 11, 2023. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monmouth County (BGCM) is celebrating its 85th anniversary year, and to commemorate its founding the organization has several events planned throughout the year focused on service and community.
In the spring of 1938, Isaiah Matlack, chairman of the Asbury Park Kiwanis Club’s boys and girls program committee recommended to the board of directors that they explore the possibility of establishing a “Boys Club” in Asbury Park. Originally located on Main Street, the Club opened its current Monroe Avenue location in July of 1952. In the 85 years since its founding, BGCM has become the county’s most trusted youth development organization, serving more than 1000 children and teens annually at four sites across Monmouth County.
“While the needs of our community have changed over the last 85 years, our commitment to our young people has not,” says Douglas Eagles, Chief Executive Officer of BGCM. “Kids need the stability and security of the Club now more than at any other time in their lives, and we are doing whatever it takes to meet this need.” Adds Ollie Jones, who grew up in the Asbury Park Boys Club and has served on its board of directors for over 40 years: “Being a member of the Club is the best experience for so many of our young people, including my own children. May our Club continue to be ever upward and ever onward!”
The Club is open every weekday during the critical after-school hours in Asbury Park, Red Bank, Neptune, and Long Branch, providing life-skills classes, mentorship, social-emotional learning, nutritious meals, college and career prep, and more. It also offers an 8-week full-day summer camp.
The Club unveiled its special anniversary logo earlier this month, created by Corinne Karl Design in Shrewsbury, and will be commemorating the 85 years of service in several ways throughout the year. “85 Acts of Kindness” is an initiative where Club staff, teens, and board members will engage in 85 acts that give back to the community to express appreciation for the people they serve. The Club will also be launching the “Give Back 85” volunteer campaign this spring, encouraging community members to give “85” to the Club—minutes a week or hours a year.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Environmental groups and opponents of offshore wind energy want a federal investigation into the deaths of six whales that have washed ashore in New Jersey and New York in little over a month. They suspect the deaths are related to ocean-floor site preparation work underway by the offshore wind power industry. But a federal environmental agency says humpback whales have been dying at higher-than-usual rates since at least 2016, predating offshore wind activity. Dead whales have been found in Atlantic City, Strathmere and Keansburg in New Jersey, and Rockaway Beach and Amagansett, New York.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A federal judge has put a temporary hold New Jersey’s new legislation drafted after the U.S. Supreme Court expanded gun rights last year. The judge suggested Monday that the law infringes on the public’s Second Amendment rights. Three members of Second Amendment rights groups who also have carry permits filed the lawsuit soon after Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy signed the legislation just before Christmas. The legal challenge hinges in part on the argument that the new law effectively makes much of the state a “sensitive place” where carrying a firearm is barred.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy says his administration is barring certain “high risk” social media platforms like TikTok on state devices. Monday’s decision applies to state agencies under the executive branch and comes as a third of U.S. states have moved to prohibit the platform on government devices. New Jersey is among just a few Democrat-led states to bar such platforms. It’s unclear what will become of the state’s NJGov TikTok account, which has more than 56,000 and more than a half-million likes. Murphy’s directive allows for certain “compelling State business” with a public interest reason for using the technology to request an exception
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gas prices ticked up in New Jersey and rose by double digits around the country at large amid tighter supplies and higher demand. AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in New Jersey on Friday was $3.31, up three cents from last week. Drivers were paying $3.38 a gallon on average a year ago at this time. The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.29, up 12 cents from last week. MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey woman who pleaded guilty to helping her boyfriend spread a feel-good story that garnered more than $400,000 in online donations has been sentenced to three years in prison on state theft charges. Burlington County prosecutors say 32-year-old Katelyn McClure wasn’t present in the Mount Holly courtroom Friday because she is serving a one-year federal term in the case. Prosecutors said McClure and Mark D’Amico concocted the feel-good tale in 2017 about Johnny Bobbitt Jr. giving $20 when her car ran out of gas in Philadelphia. Prosecutors said the couple spent much of the money on vehicles and casino trips.

NORTH WILDWOOD, N.J. (AP) — A beach town that is defying New Jersey’s order not to shore up its eroding sand dunes is suing the state for $21 million. That’s how much North Wildwood says it spent over the past decade on trucking sand in as part of an ultimately futile effort to hold back the waves. The city is being sued by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for defying a state order not to make emergency repairs to the dunes following several storms last fall. It wants a judge to allow it to immediately build a bulkhead. A city engineer says the weakened dune will not last through the winter.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey will award $15 million in zero-interest loans and grants to health care facilities that provide abortion services for facility improvements and increased security. That is according to Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy, who announced the funding Wednesday. The new financial aid stems from last year’s U.S. Supreme Court decision to strip away the federal right to abortion, the governor said in a statement. The funding is being doled out in several batches. Already, $6 million in no-interest loans has been approved for 15 applicants across the state, including Planned Parenthood centers as well as community health centers.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City’s Hard Rock casino on Tuesday hired a new management team as the property pushes for an even greater share of the market. George Goldhoff was named president of the casino and Mike Sampson was named general manager. Both men are expected to start within the next few weeks after approval by New Jersey gambling regulators. Hard Rock ranks second among Atlantic City’s nine casinos in terms of overall gambling revenue, winning over $533 million over the first 11 months of last year, trailing only the Borgata. ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City’s casinos are betting they can finally put the COVID pandemic behind them in 2023. Some casino executives are optimistic about the new year, while others note that economic challenges are likely to remain in the New Jersey resort town. Issues that could be decided in 2023 include whether to ban smoking in the casinos, and what to do with the former Bader Field airport property. Casinos plan to pump millions into new hotel rooms, restaurants and entertainment projects, and a $100 million water park is due to open in May.
KINNELON, N.J. (AP) — Authorities searching for two missing New Jersey ice fishermen say one body has been recovered and another is being sought. Morris County prosecutors say family members called Butler police at about 2 p.m. Saturday to report that a 76-year-old Passaic man and a 64-year-old Clifton man had not returned from ice fishing at Split Rock Reservoir. Prosecutors said the belongings of the victims were found on the shoreline and two holes in the ice were seen about 100 yards from shore. One body was recovered Saturday before the search was suspended due to weather and darkness, with dive teams slated to resume the search Sunday.

The one where he first nurtured his songwriting impulses, bouncing ideas off other like-minded artists. The kind of place where the changing of the seasons always delivered a sense of perspective and fresh artistic inspiration. Where he felt a deeper connection with nature and sense of community that had once been so close at hand. “I wanted to make an album to remind myself that life is magical,” he reflects. The result is Smalltown Stardust, a spiritual, tender and ultimately joyous record that might come as a shock to those with only a passing knowledge of the artist’s back catalog. On Smalltown Stardust, Thomas takes us on his journey to a place where past and present collide, where he can be a dreamer in love with all that he sees. Images of his youth abound: from Route 91 which runs through his hometown (in “Smalltown Stardust”); to Redtooth, a spectre who used to roam the streets (“Bandits Of Blue Sky”); to old friends, old haunts and old dreams (“Always Find Me”); to Vermont’s Rock River, which gave its name to a song of a torch still burning for past love: “Those days are gone and we can’t rewind/ Cuz people grow and places change/ But my love for you will never fade away.”

FREEHOLD – An investigation has been launched into a bank robbery from earlier this morning in Middletown Township, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago announced on Wednesday.
On Wednesday December 28, 2022, at approximately 10:40 a.m., the Middletown Township Police responded to a report of a bank robbery at the Valley National Bank on Rt. 35 in the Kohl’s Plaza.
The investigation revealed the suspect to be a white male, possibly Hispanic, wearing a dark North Face winter coat, blue face mask and a light colored winter hat. The suspect may be operating a silver vehicle, possibly a Honda Accord. Details on a license plate are not available at this time.
The investigation is being handled in conjunction by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, the Middletown Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigations’ Red Bank Office.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Online poker players in New Jersey and Michigan will be able to compete against each other starting Jan. 1 as a long-sought effort by gambling companies and their regulators to expand interstate play takes effect. PokerStars will combine player pools in the two states. The idea is that more players will lead to bigger prize pools and contribute to the growth of the industry. In 2018, New Jersey launched an interstate compact with Nevada and Delaware for online poker with Caesars Interactive Entertainment. Players in Nevada and Delaware have been able to play against each other since 2015.
“People come and people go away / Yeah, but God with me he stayed,” sings Alex Giannascoli, the Philadelphia-based musician best known as Alex G on his new album, God Save the Animals. “God” figures in the LP’s title and multiple of its thirteen tracks, not as a concrete religious entity but as a sign for a generalized sense of faith (in something, anything) that fortifies Giannascoli, or the characters he voices, amid the songs’ often fraught situations. Giannascoli has been drawn in recent years to musicians like Gillian Welch and writers like Joy Williams, artists who balance the public and hermetic and who present faith more as a shared social language than religious doctrine. Filtering his experiences through fact and fiction, Giannascoli also opened up the songs through a more practical method: collaboration. God Save the Animals features several individual contributions from his bandmates (guitarist Samuel Acchione, drummer Tom Kelly, and bassist John Heywood) or frequent collaborator Molly Germer on strings and/or vocals. As with records since his adolescence, Giannascoli wrote and demoed the songs
of God Save the Animals by himself, at home; but, for the sake of both new tones and “a routine that was outside of my apartment” during the pandemic, he began visiting multiple studios in greater Philadelphia. God Save the Animals consequently features the work of some half-dozen engineers whom Giannascoli asked to help him produce the “best” recording quality, whatever that meant. The result is an album more dynamic than ever in its sonic palette and its thoroughgoing complexity.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City had been set to choose a development proposal Wednesday centered on high-end sports cars for an historic former airport property. But it has dropped those plans after New Jersey officials asked them not to take the vote. City officials say they remain committed to the project involving a race course for top-end cars, and housing for their owners. But the delay opens the door or at least buys more time for a competing proposal by a Philadelphia developer looking to create a water-intensive development inspired by the canals of Amsterdam.
SCOTCH PLAINS, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy has signed an overhaul to the rules to get a firearm carry permit, legislation that was spurred by this summer’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling expanding gun rights. Murphy, a Democrat, signed the measure Thursday during a ceremony in Scotch Plains. He said that while teh state is bound to follow the Supreme Court’s ruling, it’s also obligated to do everything it can to make sure guns don’t proliferate. The Democrat-led Senate had passed the measure Monday, sending it to Murphy’s desk. Republicans had opposed the legislation, raising questions about its constitutionality, and gun rights advocates predicted it wouldn’t pass constitutional muster.

FREEHOLD, NJ – The winter holidays are a time for family and friends to get together. Holiday décor that glitters and glows is a part of the season, but it is important to remember that everyone should be careful with candles, holiday lights and Christmas trees.
“As loved ones gather this holiday season, we would like to remind residents that planning is one of the best ways to avoid a fire emergency,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “Fire departments across the County are available 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, seven days a week to assist in an emergency and on behalf of my fellow Commissioners, I would like to thank them for helping keep our communities safe.”
Fire safety tips for the Christmas tree include:
- When selecting a Christmas tree, inspect the tree to make sure it is fresh with green needles that do not fall off when touching it.
- Cutting two inches from the base of the trunk before placing the tree in the stand.
- Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
- Keeping the tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces, radiators, candles or heat vents. The heat will dry out the tree.
- Keeping the tree watered at all times by making sure the stand is filled with water daily.
- Never use lit candles as decorations on the tree.
- Always turn off the tree lights before leaving the house or going to bed.
- Removing the tree once the holiday is over. Christmas trees that have dried out are a fire hazard.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), one-third of home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems and having a heating source too close to the tree causes more than 25% of the fires.
Fire safety tips for cooking include:
- Make sure that those using the stove or stovetop are doing so responsibly by keeping a watch on the food cooking.
- Stay in the kitchen while cooking food and if you leave the kitchen, turn off the appliances in use.
- Any items that can catch on fire, keep it away from the flame source.
- If there is a fire, get out of the building, close the door behind you and contact 9-1-1
The leading cause of fires in the kitchen is unattended cooking and most kitchen fires involve the stove according to the NFPA.
Fire safety tips for other holiday decorations include:
- Choosing decorations that are flame resistant.
- Keep in mind some string lights are only for indoor or outdoor use.
- Replacing any string lights that have worn or broken cords or loose bulbs.
- Not overloading electrical outlets.
- Keeping decorations away from windows and doorways.
- Making sure to test your smoke alarms.
- Remember to blow out lit candles or turn off stringed lights when you leave the home or go to bed.
“The holiday season gives people an incredible opportunity to gather and celebrate but fire safety needs to be at the forefront of everyone’s minds,” said Commissioner Nick DiRocco, liaison to the Monmouth County Fire Marshal. “Thank you to our incredible first responders for their service to our communities and please remain safe during the holidays.”

Netflix says it plans to build a state-of-the-art production facility at a former Army base at the Jersey Shore that will cost more than $900 million, and create thousands of jobs. The subscription video streaming company will pay $55 million for a 292-acre site on the former Fort Monmouth military base in Eatontown and Oceanport. The company plans an additional $848 million worth of investments in 12 sound stages and other uses related to the film industry. The announcement was made Wednesday evening, following a vote by the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority to accept Netflix’s bid over three competing offers.

FREEHOLD, NJ – Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon is advising air travelers that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has re-extended its enforcement deadline for the Federal REAL ID Act from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Travelers now have an additional two years to upgrade their licenses and other forms of identification in order to be REAL ID compliant.
Clerk Hanlon is also reminding residents that a U.S. Passport is a REAL ID compliant form of identification and that the Monmouth County Clerk has two convenient passport offices to assist with the passport application process.
According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the REAL ID Act extension was necessary, in part, to address the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the ability to obtain a compliant driver’s license or identification card, specifically from state driver licensing agencies.
“Delays from the COVID-19 Pandemic have prevented travelers from upgrading their identification to the new REAL ID standard,” Clerk Hanlon said.
On and after May 7, 2025, any traveler over the age of 18 will be required to produce a REAL ID compliant identification in order to board a plane, enter a federal building, or enter a military base.
“Residents are reminded that U.S. Passports are a REAL ID compliant form of identification and that the Monmouth County Clerk has two convenient passport offices in Freehold Borough and Neptune that are open and ready to serve the public,” said Clerk Hanlon.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey lawmakers have given final approval to legislation overhauling rules to get a firearm carry permit after this summer’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling expanded gun rights. The Democrat-led Senate passed the measure in what is scheduled to be the last voting session of the year, sending the legislation to Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy. The governor has said he planned to sign it into law. Republicans opposed the measure, raising questions about its constitutionality. Gun rights advocates predicted it wouldn’t pass constitutional muster. The bill bars carrying firearms in certain places like schools and concert venues, raises permit fees and requires liability insurance.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City’s casinos won nearly 4% more from in-person gamblers in November than they did a year earlier, but most of them continue to trail the levels at which they were performing before the coronavirus pandemic. New Jersey gambling regulators say the nine casinos collectively won $214.5 million from in-person gamblers, up 3.7% from Nov. 2021. But only two casinos won more than they did in Nov. 2019. That’s a source of continuing concern for the industry. When internet and sports betting money are added, the casinos, horse tracks and their online partners took in $441 million in November, up 0.3% from a year ago.
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gas prices have again dropped sharply in New Jersey and around the country as demand remains low. AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in New Jersey on Friday was $3.33, down 16 cents from last week. Drivers were paying $3.41 a gallon on average a year ago at this time. The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.17, down 14 cents from last week. Drivers were paying $3.31 a gallon on average a year ago at this time. Analysts say gas prices could continue to drop across the country in the coming weeks, citing falling demand, consumer concerns about a potential recession and other economic issues.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — A man who was serving in the Air National Guard died after he fell while snowboarding at an indoor ski park inside a New Jersey mall. Twenty-four-year-old Peter Mathews fell Dec. 8 as he snowboarded at the Big Snow American Dream inside the American Dream Mall in East Rutherford. Mathews’ sister, Sarah Mathews, tells Newsday her brother fell backward, hit his head, became unconscious and had trouble breathing. Mathews was pronounced dead at a hospital. He was from Bay Shore on New York’s Long Island. Officials at Big Snow said in a statement that their thoughts were with the family. Mathews was an airman first class in the Maryland Air National Guard.

PERTH AMBOY, N.J. (AP) — People are asking questions about a massive $52 billion storm protection plan proposed by the federal government in New York and New Jersey. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is pitching the plan to protect against catastrophic flooding of the type caused by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The agency proposes building movable barriers and gates across bays, rivers and other waterways in the two states hardest-hit by the October 2012 storm. During a public hearing Wednesday in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, people wondered how the storm gates would work, why the plan does not go further to address flooding, and whether it will work at all. More meetings are planned in coming weeks.

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Gas prices dropped again in New Jersey and around the country as the cost of oil edged lower amid fears of economic slowdowns around the globe. AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in New Jersey on Friday was $3.63, down 12 cents from last week. The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.44, down 13 cents from last week. Analysts say they will be watching oil prices next week after OPEC’s meeting, and an expected announcement about its planned reduction in oil production, as well as the beginning Monday of the European Union ban on Russian crude oil.

That’s okay, because we’re all just monsters.” Extreme emotions can make that battle all the more perilous, yet from such trials Sunny has crafted a set of songs that draw on a range of ideas and styles, as though she’s marshaling all her forces to get her ideas across: ecstatic gospel, dusty country blues, thoughtful folk, rip-roaring rock and roll, even avant garde studio experiments (like the collage of voices that closes “Shelter and Storm”). She melds them together into a powerful statement of survival, revealing a probing songwriter who indulges no comforting platitudes and a highly innovative guitarist who deploys spidery riffs throughout every song.

LINCROFT, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners has announced that due to the decline in demand, the COVID-19 testing site at Brookdale Community College is scheduled to close on Friday, March 18.“We are grateful to Vault Health and Brookdale Community College for their partnership, which helped us provide a large-scale COVID-19 testing site to our residents during a time when there was a significant increase in demand,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “Thankfully, the demand for testing has decreased and there is no longer a need for this site to continue its operations at this time.”
The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners partnered with Vault Health and Brookdale Community College in January 2022 to provide a State-funded COVID-19 testing site offering saliva and rapid tests three to five days a week.
“With the Brookdale Community College testing site closing, there are still options for those who need access to a COVID-19 test,” said Commissioner Deputy Director Susan M. Kiley, liaison to the County’s Health Department. “Residents can visit our website at www.visitmonmouth.com or download the Monmouth County Health Department App information about testing and vaccines.”

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey officials will commission studies on the environmental impact of offshore wind energy projects. They’ll study animals as large as whales, and as small as clams. The $3.4 million in surveys are designed to address a major concern raised by opponents and even some supporters of the nascent industry. Using money from wind developers, the state is funding projects to study conditions in clam beds that will overlap with wind turbine farms, and to study the topography of the ocean floor including sunlight conditions, temperature and carbon dioxide levels. The state also will join Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts and New York in the Regional Wildlife Science Entity.
New Jersey native Sharon Van Etten will be covering a Nine Inch Nails song while Julien Baker will be recording a Smashing Pumpkins track for an upcoming seven-inch single set to be a soundtrack to a comic book series.
The Image Comics title What’s the Furthest Place From Here? will be available at comic book shops and have a vinyl single in September. Van Etten will cover “Hurt” and Julien Baker will perform “1979”.
“Having Julien Baker and Sharon Van Etten record songs is really beyond anything we could have hoped for” the comic’s writer Matthew Rosenberg said in a statement. “Tyler and I regularly listen to both of their work while making this book, so having them provide the actual soundtrack for the issue has been really surreal in the best possible way.”
FREEHOLD, NJ – As the State of New Jersey winter moratorium against utility shut-offs expires on March 15, the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners would like to remind tenants and landlords that the Monmouth County Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) is available to provide utility assistance through New Jersey SHARES.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City’s Ocean Casino Resort is planning a $5 million facility merging a bar, traditional gambling and sports betting. The casino says it will open The Gallery Bar, Book & Games, a 12,000-square foot facility where its current sports book is located. The project is the final phase of a $25 million renovation of Ocean’s casino floor, and is due to open this summer. It includes a 100-foot elevated bar and lounge with 59 seats and 12 slot machines. Blackjack and roulette tables will surround the perimeter of the bar, while 140 feet of video screens will line the venue.
New Jersey’s Supreme Court has ruled the public has a right to see the internal affairs report from the case of Elizabeth’s former police director, who resigned after an investigation found he used racist and sexist language to refer to department personnel. A lower court had denied access to the records surrounding the 2019 resignation of James Cosgrove. In its ruling Monday, the Supreme Court held that the public interest outweighed the need for confidentiality because of the need to maintain accountability for law enforcement. It ordered a lower court to release the report with the names and identifying information for witnesses, informants or cooperators redacted.
NEW YORK (AP) — The state of New York has petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to block New Jersey from withdrawing from the bi-state commission formed to monitor corruption at the New York area’s ports. In a document filed Monday by New York Attorney General Letitia James, the state asked the court to stop New Jersey from its “unlawful attempts to withdraw unilaterally from the Waterfront Commission Compact” by March 28, the date New Jersey has said it will withdraw. The commission was formed in the 1950s to combat organized crime influences. But New Jersey says organized crime has largely been driven out of the ports and that the commission was impeding job growth by over-regulating businesses there.
Dolly Parton has announced she is pulling out of this year’s nominations for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, saying she hasn’t “earned that right.” The music icon who has been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame explained her decision in a statement posted on her official social media pages Monday, noting she did not want to take votes away from the remaining nominees. Parton was named in the shortlist last month, alongside fellow first-time nominees Eminem, Lionel Richie, Duran Duran and A Tribe Called Quest.
The release of “The Batman” in theaters recently has brought Nirvana a streaming hit. “Something in the Way” appears in the score at both the beginning and end of the film.
Shortly after the movie’s release on March 4th the grunge-era tune sat at number 3 in Spotify’s daily rankings of the top 50 songs in the US. In one day it had over 803,000 streams. Variety is reporting that MRC Data showed in the first four days the film was out, the 3.1 million on-demand streams for Nirvana’s song represented a 734% increase over the total streams in the four days before “The Batman” came out. And, as of March 9th the song has picked up more that 1200% increase of streams.
“Something in the Way” is a lesser-known cut off the Nevermind, Nirvana’s mega-hit album from 1991. Singles off the album include “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, “Come As You Are”, “Lithium”, and “In Bloom”. Nevermind has sold over 30 million copies worldwide.

BARNEGAT LIGHT, N,J, (AP) — An historic lighthouse in southern New Jersey will soon be shuttered for several months as it undergoes a $1.3 million renovation. The Barnegat Lighthouse, located at the northernmost tip of Long Beach Island, will close to visitors on Monday. The construction work is expected to continue there through October, the state Department of Environmental Protection announced Friday. Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, though, will remain open while the work proceeds. Built in 1856, the lighthouse in Barnegat Light was decommissioned in 1927 and remained dark until 2009, when the Friends of the Barnegat Lighthouse donated the current light. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Interested charities must submit a completed application by March 7, 2022. To be eligible to participate, organizations must be a registered 501(c)3 and have raised at least $15,000 each year for the past two years.

PLAINSBORO, N.J. (AP) — State authorities are investigating the death of a man shot by a sheriff’s office detective in New Jersey earlier this month. The New Jersey attorney general’s office said Friday that a detective with the Middlesex County sheriff’s office shot and killed 45-year-old Atiba Lewis on Feb. 16 outside a Plainsboro home. Authorities said law enforcement officers including members of the sheriff’s office were outside the home when they encountered Lewis, and one officer discharged his service weapon. Lewis was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later at Princeton Hospital. Authorities said a knife was recovered near Lewis. No further information about the circumstances of the shooting was immediately released.

(AP) — Gas prices rose again in New Jersey and around the nation amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and analysts say prices remain at their highest level since 2014.AAA Mid-Atlantic says the average price of a gallon of regular gas in New Jersey on Friday was $3.63, up two cents from last week. Drivers were paying an average of $2.79 a gallon a year ago at this time.The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.57, up five cents from last week. Drivers were paying $2.67 a gallon on average a year ago at this time.

TOKYO (AP) — A musical revolution in Jamaica has a connection with a rhythm pattern that came off a portable electronic keyboard that’s the brainchild of a Japanese woman. The bouncy rhythm heard in the 1985 reggae hit “Under Mi Sleng Teng” by Wayne Smith came from Casiotone MT-40, which went on sale in 1981. It was the first product Hiroko Okuda worked on after joining Casio, the company behind G-Shock watches. Okuda says the MT-40 feels like her first child. She doubts the famous reggae musicians know her. If she ever gets to meet them, she just wants to thank them for the great music they created.
NEW YORK (AP) — Mick Jagger and Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson are teaming up to help produce a four-part documentary series on soul legend James Brown.
The series is expected to appear on the A&E Network in 2023, around the 90th anniversary of Brown’s birth. Brown, who died in 2006, was described by the Rolling Stones frontman as a brilliant performer and an inspiration. Questlove says Brown’s life is important to understand for the deep and lasting impression he’s had on American culture. “Summer of Soul,” Questlove’s recent documentary about a series of Harlem concerts described as the Black Woodstock, has been nominated for an Oscar.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — A new report predicts that banning smoking in Atlantic City’s casinos could cost 2,500 jobs and nearly 11% of casino revenue. The Casino Association of New Jersey released a report Wednesday from an independent gambling research firm supporting the casinos’ longstanding contention that eliminating smoking would hurt their business, deprive New Jersey of tax revenue and put thousands of people out of work. Some casino workers want smoking banned for health reasons. But Hard Rock president Joe Lupo says it would be a mistake to do so now when casino employment and visitation are at 20-year lows amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
