The command and expectation to love the foreigner is deeply tied to the heart of God. However, one of the challenges we face in our cultural context is the way this subject has been polarized by partisan perspectives.
Followers of Jesus must fight the temptation within our culture to view the subject of immigration primarily through a political or economic lens, before viewing it through a biblical one. As we seek to love and care for our immigrant neighbors we must do so by being tethered to the Scriptures, in tune with the heart of God, and in touch with contemporary issues.
We are excited to have Jenny Yang with us for our event Exploring God’s Heart for the Foreigner. Jenny is the Senior Vice President of Advocacy and Policy at World Relief where she provides oversight for all advocacy initiatives and policy positions for the organization. Jenny is co-author of “Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion and Truth in the Immigration Debate”.
Can the gnawing gap between the life of intimacy and wholeness we so long to live and the distracted and disintegrated life we so often live, be narrowed?
How do we live more fully into the life of intimacy and wholeness offered to us by Jesus?
Drawing from his own experience as a follower of Jesus as well as a practicing psychiatrist, Dr. Curt Thompson offers transforming hope from the realms of biblical wisdom, psychological reflection and scientific research.
In this discussion, we explore the implications of the gospel on cultural diversity and why it is important for the church to work towards it.
Dr. Peter Cha is a professor from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS). He has extensive experience in pastoral and multicultural ministry. In addition, he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Chicago, his master’s at TEDS, and his PhD at Northwestern University.
QUESTIONS FROM PETER:
Within a 5-10mile radius from your church campus, what significant people groups dwell there? What new people groups have moved into this area?
In what ways might your church be able to intentionally reach out and serve all people groups who dwell within this 5-10 mile radius mission field?
What might be some of the costs and challenges when your campus invites and embraces all people groups who live within this 5-10 mile radius? What might be the benefits of doing so?
