Marketing Magic, created by Meneske Stewart, is an incredible (and easy to use) AI tool that will get all of your marketing content and to-dos created and organized in no time at all (and for the smallest cost too, if I may add). When she first offered it for sale at the beginning of the year, I grabbed it IMMEDIATELY after I learned of it, and that's coming from a person who is usually completely underwhelmed by AI tools. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

But seriously: Grab Marketing Magic now while you have the chance to get it for under 300 dollars for the year!

Have you ever struggled with perfectionism? How about as it relates to the website copy and marketing content you create? Maybe you find yourself constantly editing and rewriting, making it impossible to finish a piece, or worse, you don’t start writing at all and just stare at a blank page beating yourself up about it. Perfectionism in writing is something that all writers struggle with, and if I’m going to be honest with you, it’s a constant struggle…not something that happens from time to time.

Which is why it’s so difficult for non-writers to craft “perfect” copy.

On this episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, I’m talking perfectionism in writing and why nothing you write will ever be good enough. I’ll cover the three different stages of the writing process and why you should embrace each one for what it is and not try to do them all at once. By the end of this episode, you’ll learn three main takeaways: why perfectionism is detrimental to your writing, how to accept imperfection, and how to recognize and embrace the quality content you do create.

Do cold emails work in 2023?

Shoot, let's rewind for a moment....Can cold emails be cool or are they just icky overall?

The answer to those questions are yes, yes, and no need to be icky. On this episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, I'm so fortunate to welcome Laura Lopuch to talk about cold emailing and how to go about it strategically and successfully. You'll learn effective strategies for crafting engaging emails and cold pitching successfully. And successful means two things: First, and most importantly, it means reaching out as a human and not a sleezy salesperson. But successful also means getting the result you were hoping for....and with the many types of cold pitches you can send (Hint: it's not just "Hire Me!"), you're going to be excited for the results you can get.

How inclusive and accessible are the word that you write or the messaging that you share? While so many people want to follow inclusive marketing best practices, they often don't know where to start, how to write in a way that doesn't exclude anyone in their audience, or what to do if they were to...mess up along the way.

In this interview with fellow copywriter Jackie Sunga, you'll learn how to approach your marketing—most specifically copywriting—to be as accessible and inclusive as possible.

Have you noticed how marketing has changed over the past five years?

Do you feel comfortable with the direction your business is taking in order to keep up with these changes, or are you worried that the shifts (some small and others massive) are hindering your opportunities for success?

If you're worried....well, you have every right to be.

But, because my name isn't Erin Doom and Gloom Ollila, you should also know that you don't have to worry (too much 😉). The shifts in marketing over the past few years are setting us up for success in the future—at least in my opinion. As business owners, we will need to pivot and adjust, but we'll also feel a lot less "sleazy—which is a word I so often here my clients use when they talk about how uncomfortable they feel with certain marketing tactics—with a different approach to marketing in the future.

This week, I welcomed Brittany McBean on the podcast to talk about how marketing has changed over the past century, as well as what has been happening recently. But most importantly, you'll learn how these changes are (or will) affecting your business, and what you can do about it.

Brittany and I COULDN'T stop talking, so this episode is clocking in as the longest episode ever on the Talk Copy to Me podcast, but I highly suggest you listen to it all because there is so much packed into our time together.

Imagine this: you wake up in the morning, grab your phone, and can’t seem to find any of your social media apps. They’re gone. Poof! Social media, as you know it, no longer exists.

Do you know what to do without social media? Better yet, do you know how to run a business without it?

We’ve spent the past 15 episodes talking all about how to show up on social media…but what if you don’t want to be on social media anymore? How do you move forward if your efforts on Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, Instagram, or Facebook, aren’t working anymore? What if your social usage is becoming a stressor or a hassle?

To close this series about social media on the Talk Copy to Me podcast, I’ve invited Hillary Rea, founder of Tell Me a Story, to join me and talk about getting off social media when you’re a business owner. Hillary originally used social media as a way to market her business, but eventually decided to get off of all the platforms she was using and not market on social media for her business.

I'm so excited to have Racheal Cook, business growth strategist and founder of the CEO collective, as a guest expert to talk all things TikTok. Why? Well, she isn't a TikTok strategist. She doesn't offer any social media services in her business, and even better—she hasn't even been using it for a full year in her business.

Her value in this series is that she is a small business owner—just like you and me—who decided to experiment with TikTok in her marketing. And the results were incredible.

When Racheal noticed that TikTok was beginning to gain more popular attention and other demographics besides young GenZers were using it, she knew she needed to ride the wave and utilize TikTok as part of her marketing efforts. But part of Racheal's experiment on the platform was learning how to become a content creator on TikTok in a way that aligned with her values, goals, and felt good for her business. Just as you'll need to figure out what works best for you.

I won't give away all her secrets in this introduction, but let's just say that Rachel approaches TikTok differently than many people. She doesn't perform. In fact, her current approach to creating content on TikTok revolves around batched and prerecorded videos.

So, if you're curious about how to become a content creator on TikTok, her approach is one option that may work for you, too.

With all the changes happening over at Twitter in the past year, it can be difficult to know whether or not it’s the right social media platform to use for your business. I’ll start by sharing that I do have a sincere love for Twitter, though I’m worried about its future. I joined in September of 2008; so my relationship with the platform has been consistent for almost 15 years.

It’s the place where I do the most direct connecting with my network, instead of simply scrolling and consuming content. Heck, if you want to be active on Twitter, you really need to learn how to Twitter chat in a way that builds connection, because spamming the platform with your sales and services will get you absolutely nowhere.

Do I have a clue of what’s in store for Twitter in 2023 (and beyond)? Absolutely not.

Will I stay on Twitter as all these changes keep taking place? I honestly don’t know. It’s going to really depend on whether or not the changes made still align with my personal and professional values. But I do hope that the spirit of what Twitter has been in the past 17 years continues somehow, and I think it can be an incredible business tool if used correctly, at least the Twitter that exists as of the time these show notes are published.

In this episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, writer and PR expert Michelle Garrett joins us to talk all about how she’s built her community on Twitter with the help of Chats, Spaces, and Twitter Communities. You’ll learn how to grow your network and why it’s so important to show up as a human first and a business second, regardless of what social media platform you use.

Are you on Twitter for your business? If so, right now you might be worried about how to increase Twitter engagement, especially since so many people have fled the platform with recent ownership changes and behind-the-scenes chaos.

But, If you focus on conversations, getting to know the people you follow, and connecting with those that reach out to you, everything else will fall into place. See, we've all been conditioned to approach our social media usage from a strategic standpoint. And, you know that I love strategy, so I'm not suggesting that it's unimportant...but I do wish that we'd pump the breaks a bit and get to the heart of what social media can help us do...

...and that is to be more social.

This episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast with social media expert Anita Kirkbride won't disappoint. We'll talk about how success on the platform comes from connecting with other users. We'll also cover the ways you can adjust what you want to see in your feed and make sure your content shows up in the feeds of your followers.

But really — we both just want you to stop worrying about conversions and start focusing on connecting.

Social media: you either love it or you hate it.

Actually, I think we both know that it’s not really that simple. If you’re a business owner, there’s a good chance you rely on social media as a major part of your marketing (or customer service) efforts. You try to keep up with all the business social media best practices, post consistently, communicate with your followers, and more…and you see mixed results.

Sometimes it’s great; other times it’s a great amount of work that makes you question whether or not your effort is even worth it.

We’re starting a new and big series on the Talk Copy to Me podcast, and it’s all about social media. I’m thrilled that this episode about business social media best practices with guest expert Andréa Jones is the one that kicks the whole series off. This episode won’t disappoint — today, you’ll learn about how to be consistent, show up authentically, and create strategies that work for your own business.

Don’t forget to tune in over the next few weeks to hear other experts speak about each of the main social media platforms: Twitter, TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram.

As much as I wish this weren’t the case, I wasn’t born a fashionista. Sure, I can throw together an outfit worthy of running errands and choose my favorite out of a lineup of gala dresses, but being effortless stylish…well, I can’t quite claim it.

Which is why, when it came time to get new brand photos taken, I had no clue how to a dress for a photoshoot. I knew I wanted to seem approachable in the images, but how does approachable translate into clothing?

I was lucky that I was able to lean on my best friend for support, but it also made me keenly aware that I needed to learn what styles, cuts, colors, or patterns even looked good on me.

Is my story anything like yours?

Brand photos are extremely important marketing assets. If you don’t have professional images for your website, go out and get them now. And if you do, you definitely want to consider refreshing them from time to time.

But what do you wear? You know the way you look in these images will tell a story of sorts. And you want that story to be one that your ideal clients connect with.

This is exactly why I asked image consultant and stylist Melanie Lippman to join me on the Talk Copy to Me podcast. In this episode, we’ll cover all the ways you can feel confident in your clothing during a brand photoshoot, speaking on a stage, or any other professional event.

In 2023, it’s not enough to just have a great product or service offer, as much as you may wish that were the case. For your marketing efforts to be both strategic and successful, it’s important to understand the mindsets of both your leads and yourself.

Let’s play a game of pretend for a moment. You just got a new job (congratulations!). You’re responsible for selling winter jackets to the residents of Aruba or ice to individuals in Alaska. Which would you choose?

If neither sounds good to you, that’s because those two groups don’t have a need for what you’re trying to sell. And no need means a difficult, if not impossible, sale. A good marketing strategy can’t rely on basic ideal client avatar research, such as demographics, economics, or geographic locations. Learning about your audience’s mindset is vital to crafting messaging that speaks to the heart of your lead’s needs. What do you know about their psychographics, stage of life, or personal values? Have you done any voice of customer research…and if so, how old is that research now?

But understanding mindsets isn’t just about your leads, it’s also about understanding your own mindset as an individual and as a representative of your business. Think about how you feel about sales and marketing. Do you get anxiety about putting offers out there or seeking out visibility opportunities? How do you feel if a hot lead chooses not to buy or ghosts you when you thought the deal was all but complete? Are you confident with your marketing assets, such as your website, emails, and lead magnets?

By understanding your own mindset, you can be more strategic in your marketing efforts and create messaging that truly resonates with your target audience. And by understanding your leads, you can serve them better.

In this episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, coach Linda Perry and I cover all things mindset and more.

Can you believe it's been a whole year since the Talk Copy to Me podcast launched? I certainly can't, but it's true.

As of today, we've produced 48 episodes (well, 47 episodes and one trailer) in that time — 16 of those were solo episodes and 31 were interviews with incredible creators and business owners. I'm so grateful for all the experts who joined us and shared their wisdom with us, and I'm so thankful for you for listening to the show over the past year.

Do you have a business plan for your small business?

If so, you deserve a high five…but before I give that to you, I have a few more questions: How long ago was the business plan created? Is it still current? Have you even dusted it off and reviewed it since you first created it?

Chances are, if you’re reading this right now, you either don’t have a business plan or you do, it’s long past it’s expiration date. Business planning for small businesses is something that so often gets overlooked and avoided.

Why? Well, it’s so easy to dive headfirst into the exciting world of entrepreneurship without putting much thought into the future. Or, to avoid future planning because it feels impossible to dream up what the next year, five years, ten years looks like. However, without a clear business plan, you may find yourself struggling to make business decisions, or worse…stay afloat.

Writing a business plan can be a daunting task, especially for small business owners who are already stretched thin with the day-to-day tasks of running a business. But it doesn’t have to be. In this episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, business coach Andrea Liebross joins me to talk about how to bring ease and fun into business planning for small businesses.

Learn more about your guest expert

Andrea Liebross is a coach, speaker, podcast host, and soon to be published author who is known for helping bold, ambitious women make clear, confident decisions, so that they get exactly what they want, every time, and not just add another thing to their to-do list. Andrea’s clients become “I’ve got this” kind of women by creating their own custom secret sauce for success in both life and business; the sauce has just two ingredients – the right mindset and solid systems. Andrea shows women how to shift from believing what they want is impossible, complex and daunting to possible -just by simplifying, making things doable and FUN (even the systems) and adding a bit of confidence. Andrea’s signature process leads them to find success on their OWN terms and ultimately joy and freedom in life and business.

After graduating from Dartmouth College and marrying the guy that lived down the hall, Andrea and her husband settled in Indianapolis. Over the last few decades, Andrea has started 3 successful businesses and ultimately became a certified business and life coach, all while raising two kids, now ages 21 and 18, and several giant puppies. What is GA4?

Since the summer of 2022, I've heard this question over and over again. GA4 Is Google's newest analytics platform. It is replacing the current version of Google Analytics, which is often references as Universal Analytics. And before you zone out at the idea of a data overload, I really encourage you to tune in to this specific episode.

Google Analytics 4 is coming for everyone in 2023.

Yes, you. You're going to lose out on a lot of valuable data if you don't have it set up correctly. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news here, but if you view year-over-year data in Google Analytics...you're already too late. But that doesn't mean you should bury your head in the sand. If anything, now — before the year ends — is the perfect time to get your analytics accounts set up correctly.

I invited Dina Pruitt on the podcast to explain what GA4 is, as well as how to get it set up and use it in your business. Here's her best advice.

Meet our guest expert

After more than two decades in the online world, Dina Pruitt uses her love for numbers and marketing strategy to help businesses uncover actionable data inside their often overlooked Google Analytics account.

Dina’s past work includes building websites before transitioning to marketing and project management, and she was part of the team to launch Arkansas.com, one of the first state tourism sites in the country. She’s worked with destinations like Elvis Presley Enterprises, Kentucky and Utah tourism departments, and many others to use analytics to make data-driven business and marketing decisions.

Dina’s on a mission to make sure all business owners get the new version of Google Analytics (GA4) installed on their websites by the end of 2022 to avoid data gaps and the inability to see trends and patterns with year-over-year comparisons.

In addition to done-for-you services, she hosts live workshops to teach business owners how to get the most out of their Google Analytics.

Dina would love to meet:

Laura Belgray from Talking Shrimp

Google ads, for beginners at least, are incredibly confusing. But that doesn't mean that Google ads should be avoided. If anything, if now is the season to invest in advertising, Google ads could be a very strategic way to spend your money.

But how do you know when the right time is to invest in ads? And once you are certain your ready, where do you even begin? In this episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, I ask Google ads specialist Ameet Khabra how to demystify Google ads for beginners so that you can make the decision whether this is a smart advertising avenue for you in the near (or far) future.

Learn more about your guest expert on Google ads, Ameet KhabraLook up the definition of "obsessed" and you'll find a picture of Ameet Khabra.

Ameet has spent the last decade figuring out why people do what they do online, what prompts them to take action, and how to use this insight to make marketing work better. Today she uses that experience to design dazzling campaign strategies for our clients and teach future generations of PPC pros at the university level.

Her obsession doesn't stop at marketing, however. Ameet's knowledge of and passion for American football has been called "excessively enthusiastic". Her love for the Dallas Cowboys is second only to her love of her dogs, Luke and Leia.

Ameet is known for her transparency, her impressive ability to pivot her clients' PPC campaigns at just the right moment to achieve maximum results, and her extensive collection of Celine Dion songs.

Let's be honest with each other for a moment. How well do you "get" email tech? Are you comfortable in your email software platform? I bet if you asked a few of your online biz buddies, the majority of your group would agree that they're not as confident as they'd like to be in their email platforms.

And I'll be honest with you, I too would like to understand my email provider better so that I can improve my subscriber experience. I mean, I get it, but email tech isn't really my specialty. I like to stay in my lane and focus on email strategy and messaging.

Which is exactly why I invited Bev Feldman, who you might know as your personal tech fairy, to come on the show and talk about all things email tech: from a 101 perspective of understanding things like email tags and sequences, to a higher-level look at why automations and delivery can be so helpful — and important for a stress-free email experience from both the subscriber and business owner perspective.

One that treats your audience with trust and respect, in a world that too often prioritizes profit over people & the planet, using her Automate with H.E.A.R.T. Framework.

Email is emotional. Liz Wilcox said it in our episode on welcome sequences, and Kyla Roma is echoing it here today during our conversation on sales email strategy.

You get all the way through a huge part of the launch process only to realize

THERE.
IS.
STILL.
SO.
MUCH.
TO.
WRITE.

You're plowed through the pre-launch social media content, created a sales funnel and strategy, and wrote out an epic sales page that speaks directly to your clients' needs.

And now you have to write HOW MANY emails?

If feeling overwhelmed and overemotional about your sales emails is something you've experienced, this episode on being strategic with sales emails is one you won't want to miss.

Wish you knew how to grow an email list for your business? If so, you're not alone. In preparation for this episode, I Googled "How do I grow an email list?" And do you know how many results there were for that search?

1,170,000,000. Yes, friends. That's over one billion results.

People know the value of email marketing. That's for sure. They just don't know exactly HOW to grow an email list.

Good news — you don't have to search any longer. I invited Kate Doster, host of the Inbox Besties podcast, onto the show to talk all about list building with me.

We'll cover how to grow an email list if you don't have one, how to kickstart a stagnant list or address your list if your business is completely changing, and what type of lead magnets will help you actually grow your list.

She believes you don’t need to bleed the alphabet or be a dirty rotten spam face to write emails that jolt subscribers into taking action, gobbling up your paid offers like candy… or kale if that’s their thing.

Quick: While you have the chance, join Interact's FREE Quiz Mastermind, happening from October 11-13!Let me ask you a question for a moment. Have you ever taken a personality quiz? Do you remember the days of grabbing your monthly Cosmo subscription from the mailbox and scanning through to find out what type of "insert personality type" you were.

Or, maybe your last quiz wasn't that long ago. Maybe you find yourself scrolling through the popular Buzzfeed quizzes or taking the Myers Briggs or Enneagram to find out more about who you are and how you operate so you can step into your strengths and become aware of what might be considered weaknesses.

Enter quizzes for business: the marketing tool you (maybe) didn't know you needed.

Quiz creation is a great idea for almost any business. I've written quizzes for service providers and B2B SaaS companies. The quizzes can be silly and fun or serious and educational.

And, if interested in list building quizzes can be a lot easier way to get new leads on. your list than offering other lead magnets that may collect dust immediately in their inboxes.

Today, I'm excited to talk with Jackie Aguglia from TryInteract, one of the leading quiz creation companies...and the one I actually use in my business and recommend to my clients, all about quiz creation and how quizzes can fit into your marketing funnel.

Meet our guest expert:I'm Jackie 👋 Quiz coach at interact and community manager of the quiz collective by interact. Interact's mission is to empower digital entrepreneurs, creators, and brands to grow their businesses through empathetic listening, deeper understanding, and true connection... at a human level.

Your business relies on words. Yes, words. There are words in every facet of your business, though it's understandable that when you think of business words, you likely only consider the copy you have to create for your marketing and sales materials.

But what about the rest of the stuff? How do you know what to say on your forms, questionnaires, onboarding and offboarding materials, and in non-client facing documents, such as team SOPs? You're not alone. The business world has seen a steady rise of online memberships in the past few years, and the trend toward businesses with a membership component aren't slowing down anytime soon.

How much copy do you think goes into visibility opportunities, such as podcast guesting?

Well, at first glance, it might not seem like a lot. If anything comes to mind, maybe you'd think of something like a professional bio that you'd send to the host.

But you need a lot more than a voice to get podcast guesting opportunities.

There's actually quite a bit of writing that goes into podcast guesting, like the actual podcast pitch, form completion, social media posts to share episodes, and more.

Oh, and don't forget about writing landing pages and lead magnets to help turn listeners into email subscribers, and finishing that project off with an email nurture sequence, too.

In this episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, I'm chatting with Angie Trueblood, a dear friend and colleague, and founder of the Podwize Group about how to land podcast guesting opportunities with foundational research and solid copy.

As the founder of The Podwize Group and host of the Go Pitch Yourself podcast, Angie Trueblood uses her entrepreneurial spirit, innovative thinking, and super-connector powers to help business owners grow their authority, network and revenue through podcast guesting.

Personally, Angie is passionate about normalizing the voices of women in leadership positions, which she feels privileged to play an active role in through her work. When she’s not knee-deep in the podcasting space for work, she can be found spending time with her family and friends in Richmond, VA, bingeing the Smartless podcast, and attempting to develop a love of bourbon (a relatively failed effort, at this point).

If there's one thing that drives me bananas about the online business world...it's how people think there are "rules" they must follow in order to be successful.

Okay, so maybe you wouldn't call them rules, but if you're unsure of what I'm talking about here, I'll explain. It drives me bananas when experts proclaim that there is one true way to accomplish something. You know what I mean, stuff like:

  • "If you want to grow an audience, you must do XYZ"
  • "You need XYZ if you want your reel to go viral"
  • "This is exactly what you need for a 7-figure launch"

I mean, please.

We all know that my favorite phrase is "it depends" and I think there are so many marketing approaches and asset that will look different for every business.

Take your website, for example.

There are no rules you need to follow. Sure, there are best practices for both copy and design, but your business and your growth is what dictates the strategy for what best practices you should follow (and dare I say, which you shouldn't?!). I'm joined today with website designer, Teresa Schlup, to finish up this website series by discussing how business owners can set their own rules for their websites and ways to be strategic while doing so.

Copy + Design do not = a website.

However, there is one thing that brings copy and design together. Without it, no published website will be successful.

Curious what that is?

Simple: it's strategy.

Today on the podcast, I welcome marketer Lorraine Ball to talk about the four types of questions people have in their buying journey – specifically, those questions that revolve around information, navigation, commercialization and transactions — and how we can ensure our websites answer those questions.

Learn more about your guest expert, Lorraine BallAfter spending too many years in Corporate America, Lorraine said goodbye to the bureaucracy, glass ceilings and bad coffee and channeled into her passion of helping small business owners succeed.

We all know the importance of having a website. And if you didn't believe that before listening to my podcast, I sure as heck hope that I've drilled that in you by this point.

So, how do you know if the website that you have right now is working to your benefit?

Websites are not a set it and forget it type of thing.

And that's usually something I like to talk about with all of my done for you clients, before we even get started. Yes, you can do a massive amount of work to get a website foundation set, but as your business grows, adjusts, and as you get to know your own clients better, you're constantly going to be making small tweaks to get your offers out there in the world.

And this is exactly why website audits are so important.

In today's episode, I'll talk about everything that goes into a website audit, how you can DIY one, and why hiring a pro (like me!) to audit your site is the best investment you can make.

If you're interested in brand messaging — what we've been talking about on the podcast for the past couple of months — voice of customer (VOC) research is something you're also likely quite curious about.

But what is VOC research, how do you get it, and more importantly, how do you use it in your business?

In this episode, I interview brand voice expert Melissa Payne and we cover everything you're wondering about voice of customer research and how it relates to all the brand messaging work you've been doing in your business.

Mentioned in this episode on voice of customer research:

  • The series on Customer Experience we just did on the podcast
  • Melissa shared the most recent French provincial recipe she's tried.
    • Chicken breast with orange tarragon sauce
    • Lyonnaise potatoes
    • and creamed leeks

How many times have you sat down to create content quickly and instead spent endless hours adjusting the style, voice, personality, and vibe until the words actually sound like you? My guess is that you've been there and done that and spent a long time there...too long.

Creating content or repurposing content you already have shouldn't be that hard.

But staring at a blank page without your brand messaging nailed down means you're starting from scratch every single time you create any type of marketing asset. And that, my friends, is a ton of wasted time.

And business owners simply don't have time to waste time. Period.

In this episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, I talk with Emily Aborn, a freelance content writer and host of the She Built This podcast. We dive into the importance of a brand messaging guide, how they help writers nail their clients' voices, and most importantly, how to create and repurpose content based on the messaging "rules" you create.

Guest Bio:

Emily Aborn is a Freelance Content Writer and Owner Founder of She Built This.

She gets ideas out of brains and onto the page by creating compelling content and copy that helps women entrepreneurs reach their dreams AND their dream clients.

She lives in New Hampshire with her husband, Jason, and their dog, Clyde. She's into hiking, reading books, all the word and nerdy brain games she can get her hands on, and of course... writing.

When Erin's not helping her clients by writing strategic and SEO website copy, she’s encouraging them to spend time creating content if they don't have much or repurposing content that they already have. And most importantly, she hopes this episode helps you understand how to do that in your own business.

How do you know what to say to your clients? How do you know how to speak to leads on social media or what to write in your email newsletters?

Well, I don't want to oversimplify this for you. But I do have an easy answer.

The best way to feel confident in all of your marketing and messaging is by investing in a brand messaging guide that clearly lays out your mission, your vision, your values, your voice, your tone, how you speak to your audience, and the other key factors that go into all of your brand messaging.

With a brand messaging guide, you'll gain the confidence to know how to approach all of your marketing now and into the future. You'll also have a tool that helps any employees or contractors you work with nail your messaging so your brand is always consistent — and consistent brands make for trustworthy brands.

Curious about what actually goes in a brand messaging guide? Here's what this episode covers:

  • Why brand messaging guides are important for all businesses
  • Why brand messaging doesn't get the credit they truly deserve
  • What type of research needs to happen in order to prepare to create a brand messaging guide
  • How brand messaging guides influence all the other marketing strategies and assets you create
  • Who you can share your brand messaging guide with and why it helps them do their job better
  • The 10 most important elements all brand messaging guides need
  • What drives those 10 elements so you understand exactly what goes into each section (The meat of the episode happens right here!)
  • How brand messaging can help make you make business and marketing decisions

Case study marketing offers an excellent return on investment. It's one way to show our clients our expertise, while also showcasing the breadth of work we can accomplish. Case studies are perfect for business owners who are modest (to a fault!) and don't love selling themselves as a personal brand or showcasing their expertise in other ways. Best yet — there are so many ways to approach case studies, which helps in this online marketing world where so many people are doing the same things over and over and over again.

Today, I'm talking with Brittany Herzberg, an SEO copywriter about how she approaches storified case study marketing. We both share a passion for strong SEO and solid testimonials, and I wanted showcase how two professionals who do the same thing for their clients (case studies!) approach the process similarly...and even more important, differently. If you're focusing on improving your customer experience or updating your systems to make clients feel more at ease, creating case studies should be the very next item on your to do list.

Here's exactly what we covered when we discussed turning testimonials into case study marketing assets:

  • How Brittany’s efforts to make friends as a child also served her well in the online business world
  • The importance of building out testimonials into bigger pieces of marketing content, specifically case studies
  • What a case study is and why business owners should invest in them.
  • Brittany’s approach to storified case studies
  • How case studies can show off your expertise without you having to boast and brag as a business owner
  • The trouble with writing your own case studies (and how to potentially overcome them)
  • The benefits of hiring an expert “outsider” to write the case studies for you. (Call us!)
  • How to determine what makes the best testimonials (and use them in your case study marketing
  • Whether or not sourcing information from your case studies can be templatizable
  • Where to use case studies on the website
  • Why case studies are good for client acquisition and also for SEO

After building a thriving massage practice—she realized most of her clients chose to book because of her website. That combined with her 15+ years in the healthcare field has shown her that clients search for—& book with—providers they connect with.

She believes the first step to building a practice full of your dream clients—is to enlist the help of your website words. As an SEO copywriter, she knows how important it is to showcase your personality, highlight the client experience, & strategically use your clients' words. Let's face it, you probably have really strong feelings about sales pages.

Most of the people I work with (or talk to!) either prefer a long sales page or a short sales page, and they definitely have their strong opinions on why those types of sales pages are their favorite. In this episode, we'll talk about both, as well as approaching sales from a place of service.

Here's what we covered:

  • Why sales are important. Sure, it's an obvious answer, but you need encouragement to get out there and sell your services and products.
  • Why selling is a service. When you shift your mindset to understand this, the anxiety of selling seems to just....well...disappear!
  • Reminder: the people who find their way to your sales page by choice (and why this matters).
  • Ever been disappointed by going to a really boring party? That's how leads feel about unappealing sales copy.
  • The reason why long sales pages are so long. (Haven't you always wondered this?)
  • Your clients don't necessarily have pain points...and if they don't remember, they do have needs.
  • The very questions you need to ask yourself before writing a sales page or hiring a copywriter to do it for you.
  • The outlines of both short and long sales pages. Not separated by sections or "rows" of content — I'm not sharing a template here —
  • If you have a primed buyer, make it easy for them to jump right to make a purchase. Similarly, provide enough information for the less aware or less ready clients to make a decision that they feel comfortable with.

I ALSO TALKED ABOUT TESTIMONIALS IN THIS EPISODEAnd we allllll know how important testimonials are for both service providers and businesses that sell products.

  • How to go from 1:1 to 1:many
  • How a 1:many model lowers the barrier to entry while still providing a lot of support to your clients.
  • How to look at sales as a service
  • How to ideate what to offer and how to be strategic about when and how to launch
  • How capacity planning goes into strategic sales launches
  • Why copywriting (or working with a copywriter) truly needs to be the first step after you’ve created an offer
  • What to do to course correct if you approach a copywriter too late in the launch process
  • Data. Data. Data. Why you need to collect and analyze date to make strategic sales decisions
  • How many different things factor into conversions and conversion copywriting.
  • The myth of 7-figure launch and false marketing promises
  • Erin’s crush on Trevor Noah and why that’s actually pretty relevant to this conversation
  • How to approach copy by acknowledging pain points without taking advantage of them, and more importantly how to shy away from shame-driven marketing

How do you feel about writing sales copy or planning a sales launch?

In this episode, Kristin and I will discuss:

  • What a lazy launch is and how you can learn so much from them for future strategic launches
  • What Kristin learned from her own lazy launch and how she shifted her upcoming launch based on the information she learned from the first launch.
  • How your clients (and VOC research) can help you determine what the product will look like when it launches and how your messaging gets marketing to your ideal audience
  • There’s a massive amount of copy that goes into any sales launch. Think: Sales page, emails, funnels, conversion events, and other assets, like registration pages, ads, and more (and more and more!)
  • The difference between a launch strategist and a sales copywriter and how someone can play both roles, but that doesn’t mean all copywriters help to create launch or funnel strategy
  • How the three pieces to all launches are: Audience, offer, and copy
  • Voice of customer research and data informs copy, which means there’s no guessing from copywriters
  • Learning the level of awareness your potential buyers are helps to create copy
  • Why a copywriter is only as good as the questions they ask….so let them ask those questions to help guide your project

I'm going to be honest with you: When I started my career, I didn't think SEO for copywriting was as powerful as SEO for content writing.

But for many reasons, I realized that there was just as much value in SEO for copywriting projects like web pages (and potentially even sales pages — gasp!) as there was in longer-form content. In this episode, I'll talk about whether or not investing SEO in your copywriting efforts will bring a good return on investment. And if so, what you can do to maximize that return.

Here's the scoop on what we talked about:

  • Erin's transition from SEO content writer to SEO website writer and why she made the shift
  • The three types of keyword phrases that you may want to consider using on your website pages
  • Why and how voice-of-customer research can help you with SEO research and implementation
  • Remember, search intent is such a valuable lesson for business owners when it comes to finding SEO opportunities and using that data when implementing SEO for copywriting projects
  • Why trial and error (and trying again) is the best approach for implementing SEO within your website copy
  • How to use the posts on your website to link to the pages on your website for maximum SEO juice
  • How to ask for backlinks from outside sources to maximize your SEO for copywriting on-page efforts
  • Whether or not SEO for copywriting projects like sales pages is worth the effort
  • How to approach SEO for sales copy for time-specific launches
  • Why using your best SEO keyword phrases in evergreen content is the best approach and how calls-to-action on those pages could temporarily drive traffic to your launches
  • Sure, SEO for copywriting is a lot of work. But consistency is what drives conversions, so keep at it
  • Most importantly (😂) how you can hire Erin to manage your SEO for you

Think SEO is just for your website? Think again! The effort you put into SEO for podcasts, YouTube channels, and other media outlets is such a smart investment in your marketing. But where do you even begin to use keywords and keyword phrases when you’re not writing content for your site? How can you make sure you’re not creating (and getting dinged by the big ol’ search engines for) duplicate content.

In this episode, I’m talking with Akilah Thompkins-Robinson of Girl Get Visible about alllllll the ways SEO can be a major marketing asset when you work on building it up off of your website. There are opportunities to rank with your podcast, YouTube channel, and the guesting opportunities you do in other people’s communities. You just have to know where to look and how to implement the SEO efforts.

Good news. Akilah and I will explain exactly how to do that.

SEO for podcasts and YouTube doesn’t get enough mic time. Which is why I’m so grateful for this conversation with Akilah Thompkins-Robinson.

Here’s everything we talked in regard to SEO for podcasts, YouTube, social media and more during this episode:

  • How to use SEO for podcasts and other outlets for maximum visibility and network growth
  • Know your metrics and embrace the data. You’ll learn a lot that can help you make decisions for SEO, and also data that helps you make overall business decisions
  • It’s not just the titles, description, etc. to consider when it comes to writing your podcast and YouTube descriptions. There are other SEO considerations to consider
  • Learn how SEO is like running a race
  • There’s a difference between people finding you for the first time from SEO and people who are already aware of you who are researching you. How do you determine what SEO decisions you make to get the best impact from using other people’s sites and shows

How do you feel about implementing SEO for content you've created?

Wouldn't it be great if new people were coming into your network more frequently without having to do anything? How would it feel if more qualified leads were coming into your business without investing in paid ads or the need to show up on social media all day every day. Strategic effort with SEO for content marketing can help you do just that.

On this episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, I'm talking with Meg Casebolt of Love at First Search all about SEO. We'll dive into what content is right for your business, how to rank for that content, how long it will take to rank, and what goes into creating content that will help you get found by your ideal audience.

SEO for content marketing doesn't have to be a struggle. Everything you create is a potential asset that helps bring new people into your network. Any SEO effort is a long-term investment into your business.

There's so much to learn about SEO for content writing — and we'll help you determine what to focus on.

Here's everything I talked about with Meg during this episode:

  • Why and how SEO brings new clients into your business
  • How quality content helps your audience to feel as if they really know you
  • How competition plays a key role in if/how you will rank on search engines
  • You may need to change your content approach based on what your ideal clients are searching for or what they think they may need
  • Everyone has their own perspective. Your content will be based on your perspective. Your take on the topic is different from other people who are trying to rank for that same or similar keyword
  • You don't need a lot of visits to your website. You need the right visits, which is why intent is so important. To get the right people to your website, you need to put strategy into your SEO and content approach
  • Why your SEO approach may need to change based on what is happening with your business and the world at large
  • What to do if you already have invested in SEO, and are looking for an improvement to what you already have
  • SEO is a long-term investment than can continue to serve you for years after creating the original content
  • How the pandemic changed all bread makers SEO efforts for the better 🤣
  • The importance of investing into marketing efforts that are not social media
  • You can take content you've created and use it for something new, because your audience consumes content in different ways
  • Think you've exhausted a content topic? Well, you probably haven't. But it's okay to rest up on your efforts as you determine your next marketing steps

I'm going to be honest with you from the very beginning: I am a geek for all things SEO.

I love the value it delivers. I love keyword research and the "game" of determining the best keywords and tracking them over time. I love using those keywords as I write my copy and making all the strategic decisions necessary to ensure I'm following SEO best practices.

But not everyone loves SEO as much as I do. And I can understand why — SEO can be difficult to understand at first.

But that doesn't mean it has to be hard to understand forever!

I thought recording an SEO podcast for beginners would help the Talk Copy to Me podcast listeners understand the basics of SEO before we dive into how SEO in regard to website copy, content, and off-site optimization for podcasts and video shows.

How confident are you with your website's Services or Work With Me page? Are your offers or products all listed on one page? Are you using secondary services pages? How many spots in your top navigation bar are being taken by your offers?

Writing your services page might seem easy if you know your offers well, but there are a LOT of decisions that go into determining how to visually offer your products and services, in addition to how to shape the messaging to move your leads through a decision-making process.

In this episode, we'll talk about the different ways you can present your offers and products to your website viewers, as well as what needs to go on the page (and how to present it!) to make conversions.

Okay — be honest with me for a second. How does your website make you feel? If you're squirming in your seat right now, you are definitely not alone.

I hear this all the time from prospective clients. They know the importance of a quality website, but they are not thrilled with what they have right now. They're worried that their copy doesn't speak to their audience or it doesn't showcase their mission, vision, and values in a way that they want it to. They may feel like there's no personality or it's not clear from their web presence what an incredible experience that they actually do provide for their customers.

Oh, and I also hear from a lot of people how jealous they are of their competitor's websites. They feel frustrated that people who have been in business for a shorter period of time or who may appear to have less experience than them seem to be vocalizing their message with clarity and attracting the clients that they wish that they could reach.

It's time to change all that. For the next few episodes, I'll be sharing a mini-series on web copy discussing how to develop strong Home, About, and Services pages, along with an episode on all the other pages your site might have (or need!). Today, we're talking the good ol' home page.

Is your home page up to par? Yes? No? Maybe? Either way, this episode is a must listen.

Imagine a website void of all words.

What would it look like?

There's be colors, of course. You'd likely see some pictures of people or products. There will be buttons and maybe even forms. But, when combined, do all of those things give you a clear idea what the site is about? Would you be able to identify what kind of business it is? Who the professional is (and what they do!), or anything else?

Chances are, you wouldn't be able to tell a thing about a website if it didn't have words on it.

So, why are so many small business owners still not investing in their websites?

Now, we’re talking about web copy today simply because I’m biased. As a website copywriter, my job is to write website words, and I’m pretty passionate about cheering on creative entrepreneurs and smart service providers.

But the point stays the same when you translate it to any type of marketing message: Without words, there's a very slim chance that your audience is going to understand your message, and more importantly there's an even smaller chance that they'll connect with it.

But let's stick with websites for this episode. Here, we'll learn .why having a website is so important for any small business owner in 2022, what we can learn from sites who obviously didn't invest in their web projects, and talk about the many ways to build (or rebrabd) an online presence, regardless of whether you've been in business for a while or you're just starting out.

And, there's a special bonus for the early listeners of the Talk Copy to Me podcast: complimentary website reviews**! Share your name, email, and address, and I'll respond within a week with actionable and personalized suggestions that you can implement right away.

Wait — what’s this all about?

What’s in it for me?

You might think it’s a bit silly to start the first episode of a brand new podcast posing those two questions, but the truth is, when it comes to creating any type of copy or content, you’re audience is going to ask themselves those two very questions — whether consciously or subconsciously.

Think about it: we all ask ourselves these very questions as we scroll through our social media feeds, scan the subject lines in our email inboxes, and sort through our physical mail after grabbing it from the mailbox.

There’s limited time in all of our already jam-packed days and we want to make sure we’re investing what time we do have in the right ways.

Which is why each and every time you sit down to write copy for your own business and brands, you need to be able to clearly answer those two questions:

What is this message all about?

What’s in it for my audience? On this (very first!) episode of the Talk Copy to Me podcast, Erin describes ways in which big brands and small businesses forget to answer those very questions, as well as suggested fixes. And, there's a special bonus for the early listeners of the Talk Copy to Me podcast: complimentary website reviews**! Who would have thought that putting words to the page would be one of the most difficult parts of doing business?

Yet here you are. Spending all your time trying to massage your message, and what you end up with (or what you've already hired out) lacks a certain je ne sais quoi. And you know that if you're not content with the content, it's going to fall flat for your audience as well.

I'm here to tell you it doesn't have to be like this.

Hello friends and welcome to the Talk Copy to Me podcast. I’m your host, Erin Ollila, conversion copywriter, copy coach, and ice-cream indulger.

My mission for Talk Copy to Me is to empower creative entrepreneurs and smart service providers to step into the spotlight and spark a connection with their carefully crafted copy.

See, clever words strung together may sound nice, but strategic and SEO-focused sentences make the difference between the wrong people knocking on your door and the right people patiently waiting on your wait list.

With over 15 years of publishing experience, an MFA in Creative Writing and years of working alongside billion dollar brands, I get what it takes to ideate, create, and implement smart copy and strategic content campaigns.

Though, I also understand how hard it is to be successful and consistent with your own marketing as a small business owner.

I’ve witnessed too many creative entrepreneur floundering as they attempted to launch, rebrand, or pivot their offers and services simply because they didn’t have access to the marketing and copywriting know-how those big brands can easily tap into.

And that, my friends, is exactly why Talk Copy to Me exists.

Since starting my business, I’ve supported hundreds of small business owners, just like you, to develop marketing strategies, uncover and own their brand messaging, and wow with their websites.

I hope this podcast inspires you, encourages you, and lights a fire for you to perfect your copywriting.

You’re in the right place if you’re ready to attract high-quality leads, create instant connections, and transform your audience into paying customers.

Talk Copy to Me will take you behind the scenes with industry experts and give you quality one-on-one time with me, your favorite — or soon to be favorite — copywriter and copy coach.
