One Last Word: He is Risen!

The Seventh Word: Into Your Hands

Palm Sunday was the one day the crowds embraced Jesus as the Messiah. Within a week, they’d call for His crucifixion, exposing our sinful and inconsistent human nature. With this word, Jesus experienced the peace of fully entrusting Himself to God. This was at the heart of His ministry: teaching us how to place our lives in God’s hands. Yet, despite our best intentions, we struggle to do so, hindered by the same sinful and inconsistent nature as the crowd.

The Fifth Word: I Thirst
John 19:28-29, Psalm 22:15, Psalm 69:21, Psalm 42:2, John 4:10, 7:37-38
Gist: With this word, Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of scripture as He expressed a desire for a drink to quench his physical thirst, but at the same time, He also pointed to a deeper need. In scripture, Jesus presented himself as “living water,” and here he reminds us of our own need for a savior and of the fact that we are all spiritually thirsty.

The Fourth Word: Forsaken

On the cross, Jesus died the death of an unrepentant sinner and thus experienced the separation from God that sin brings. With this word, He expresses the despair of abandonment, and yet these carefully chosen words also point to the hope we have in God, even in the worst moments of life.

The Great Substitution

Jesus died on the cross in our place, substituting his righteous life for our sinful lives, making atonement for our sin, and bringing us grace.
The Cross
In the ancient world, the cross was a symbol of shame, death, and defeat. Among the Jewish people, anyone who died on a cross was considered cursed by God, and the Romans viewed those who were crucified with contempt. This is why the Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 1:23, “but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles.” Even today, the cross remains difficult for many to understand. Yet, the cross stands at the center of God’s redemptive plan and the very heart of the gospel. April 20 "I Am the Resurrection and the Life"

When Jesus rose from the grave, He conquered sin and death, showing himself to be Lord over all, the one in whom we hope and who calms our fears. When Jesus called Himself "the resurrection and the life," He was responding to the death of Lazarus but also to the pain, disappointment, and fear of those who loved Lazarus. In Jesus, we have a Savior who not only weeps with us but meets us in the hard moments of life and whose resurrection will one day mean the end of pain, disappointment, fear, and death forever.

"I Am"
Lent is the season of preparation for Easter, a time to reflect deeply on Jesus- his identity, teachings, and death on the cross—so we can fully understand and celebrate His resurrection. This year, we will focus on the "I am" statements in the Gospel of John. While all four Gospels include instances where Jesus uses the Greek phrase "ego eimi," meaning "I am," John's Gospel records Jesus doing so over 30 times, more than twice the other Gospels combined. Among these, seven instances feature profound metaphors that Jesus used to describe Himself. Throughout Lent, we will explore these seven metaphors, gaining a deeper and richer understanding of who Jesus was and is.

God is incredibly generous. He’s given us everything we have, including our very lives. In turn, God calls us to be generous as well. The idea of being generous people may appeal to us, but navigating our way to generosity isn’t as simple as we’d like. It’s easy to get turned in the wrong direction or lost along the way. With this series, we’ll focus on steering clear of greed and selfish motives and toward trusting in God’s provision so that we can reach our destination of becoming generous people.

One Crazy Farmer

As God's people are saved, they respond with a celebration, the Jewish festival of Purim. It's a celebration of looking backward and remembering but also moving forward. "A Decree of Life"
Esther 8:1-17
God's providence leads to another reversal. An irrevocable decree that brought death to the Jews had been given, but now a counter degree bringing life. In the same way, a decree of death stands against us for our sin that can't be revoked, but the counter decree of the gospel has been issued, bringing life. When we give our lives to Christ, we are united with Him, so His death becomes our death to sin, and His resurrection becomes our resurrection to new life.

God provides another amazing reversal; justice is served, and Hamman meets the fate that he had set for Mordecai. The death of a substitute satisfied the King's wrath. With Mordecai and Haman, it was the guilty dying in the place of the innocent; with Jesus and us, it is the innocent dying in the place of the guilty.

"The Man the King Delights to Honor"
Esther 6:1-14
God's providence leads to a great reversal; Mordecai is honored instead of Hamman. This is really no surprise since scripture says that God "opposes the proud and shows favor to the humble." Both Hamman and Mordecai were servants of the King, but Mordecai had the humble heart of a servant, so he was the man the King took delight in honoring. Yet there is another man, a greater servant, whom God delights in honoring even more.

James is a very practical book. It doesn’t spend much time drawing out the finer points of theology; James focuses on how we should live and deal with the real-life situations we face every day. James also has a very down to earth approach to faith that makes sense to regular people. But James isn’t just practical; it’s also very spiritual because it’s about putting real faith into practice every day in the lives of regular people like you and me!

It’s A Wonderful Life Because We Have Hope (Mary)
Luke 1:26-38, 1 Timothy 1:1, Ephesians 2:12-13
An angel appeared to Mary with the news that she would bear a child; Jesus, the Messiah, who would bring with Him the gift of hope.
The classic movie It’s a Wonderful Life is a favorite every year at Christmas time because it tells a story of struggle and hope that we can all relate to. It also points to the fact that it’s easy for us to focus on the wrong things in this life, things that we think will lead to a “wonderful life” but ultimately can’t deliver. Advent and Christmas tell a similar story in a way, but in fact, a greater one; it’s a story that calls us to focus our hearts and lives on Jesus and the gifts He brings that do not disappoint! If we do that, we can indeed have a pretty Wonderful Life!

We all put something at the center of our lives as the most important thing. Many people do this without even realizing it. However, the top or center place in our lives really belongs to God because only He can truly meet our needs and deserves that place.
What does it mean to "be of the same mind" when we are democrats and republicans, public school and homeschool parents, Rams and Seahawks fans... What does it take? Humility. We should imitate Jesus with a singular mindset toward others.
As people of faith, we are not of this world but made for something more. Because of this, the way we view and understand this world is important. As followers of Jesus, we're called to see the world through the lens of our faith, not through the lenses or filters of this world.
Today self-focused faith is common. Many think only or primarily about their faith journey and relationship with God. Yet, the Christian faith, by definition, is to be lived with others and for others.
For different reasons, many people only give God part of their lives. They have certain times, places, or "compartments" where God is welcomed and others where He is not, but God wants the whole of our lives, all that we are, and all that we do.
We often think of ourselves as the master of our destiny, but as people of faith, the goal of our lives is not to live this life according to our own plan but instead to live into the plan God has for us.
Many people today think of themselves as having divinity within them or that potential before them. Without going that far, others think of themselves as the center of the universe, consciously or unconsciously. Yet, in scripture, we see a fundamental line between God the creator and the creation, of which we're apart. We're not God or divine, and it's only when we understand these truths that we can really understand God, ourselves, the relationship that we are meant to have, and our place in the universe.
God calls us to love ourselves, not in a prideful or arrogant way, but by seeing ourselves more and more as He does.
God calls us to love others not only for their sake and because it pleases Him but also for our own sake becauseloving others makes the world a better place and us better people.
We are called to love God, not because God needs our love; God doesn’t need anything, but because God made us for love and because loving Him changes our lives for the better.
The kind of love (agape) that God has for us and calls us to have for Him and others is a different kind of love than we usually see in this world.

Persisting in prayer, knowing that we have a compassionate, caring, and just Father who faithfully and relentlessly responds to us.

God is the good shepherd who lovingly tends and protects his flock. He is intimately acquainted with them and they also know him. His flock is most satisfied in his presence.
Hebrews 13:1-24
In this last chapter of the Hebrews, the author encourages us to continue to live that greater faith. And after many chapters of higher-level theological thought, this chapter focuses on the practical side of following Jesus.
We are called to a greater discipline as we pursue a greater promise in Jesus.

Hebrews 11:1-16
We are called to a greater faith in a greater promise in Jesus and we're called to live that faith as many people have done who went before us.
A good portion of Jesus' teaching in the weeks before his arrest and crucifixion – and again during the weeks between his resurrection and ascension – was focused on telling his closest followers that it was for their own good that he would leave them. But, it seems, the disciples didn't buy it. Then the Day of Pentecost changed everything for them, and for us.
We are called to persevere in faith and, therefore, to live into the greater future that we have in Christ.
We are made perfect by Jesus' greater, once and for all, sacrifice on the cross because it took away all our sins forever. Because of this, we never run out of God's grace.

Blood symbolizes life, and forgiveness of sin requires the shedding of blood. Animal sacrifices simply weren't good enough. Only Jesus' blood is a great enough sacrifice for the forgiveness of our sins.
Hebrews 8:1-13
Jesus has a greater ministry because He is the Mediator of a greater covenant based on greater promises.
Jesus is our perfect priest from a greater priesthood in whom we have a greater hope.
Hebrew7:11-28
The greatness of Melchizedek foreshadows the greatness of Jesus, the true King of righteousness and peace, and our greater priest from a greater priesthood.
On that first Easter morning, Jesus' followers learned one more amazing thing about who He is. He is our risen Lord. The tomb was empty, the angel proclaimed it, Jesus had said it about himself, but they only truly understood it through their personal experience with Him.
Palm Sunday was the one day in Jesus' life that the crowds seemed to have a sense of who He was, and yet even then, there was confusion. So, with Easter just one week away, who do we say Jesus is? And do we live like we believe He is who we say He is?
Many people in Jesus' time asked who He was. Some called Him the "Son of God." But what does this mean? It describes the special relationship between Him and God, the fact that Jesus is God in the flesh.
During Jesus' life, very few people called Him "Savior," and yet that's what Jesus is. Jesus laid down His life to save us from sin and death. So, soon after His death, as people began to understand what He had done, His followers began to call him Savior!
People in Jesus' time often called Him "Lord." But what does that mean? Was it a simple term of respect or something more? At the same time, people were often shocked, puzzled, and even sacred at times by the amazing power Jesus had and asked who he might be. Jesus' power illustrated, and the scripture confirms that He is, in fact, Lord of all, and therefore we are to surrender our lives to Him and live as he calls us to.
Mark 8:27-9:1
Some people in Jesus' day wondered if He was the "Messiah." With these passages, His disciples finally recognize that Jesus is indeed the Messiah, and yet at the same time, Jesus shows them that He's not the kind of Messiah they expected.
Many people in Jesus' time called him a "prophet," and Jesus affirmed that He was. Yet, Jesus is so much more; He's also a priest, king, and the Lord himself. People often want to pigeonhole Jesus as someone good but less than who He truly was and is.
People in Jesus' day wondered who He was, and people still do today. So, who do we say he is, and do we live like we believe He is who we say He is? Tonight we'll focus on Jesus as the lamb of God who takes away our sin as we repent and begin the season of Lent seeking to get back on track with God or simply to be renewed and grow in faith.
Hebrews 6:13-20
God has promised us a future that is to come, one that we can find hope in as he promised it on the certainty of his own character. This hope is an anchor for us to live in this current world. Do you realize the hope that you have in Christ? Have you put confidence in that hope?

Rather than languishing as spiritual infants, or falling away altogether, we’re called to something greater, to grow up in faith to spiritual maturity.

Because Jesus is both fully human and fully divine, He is the greatest high priest or mediator with God, we could ever have and also the perfect sacrifice for our sin.

Joshua, who led the Israelites into the promise land, was a foreshadow of Jesus who is greater and leads us into a greater promise, eternity in heaven with God.
Hebrews 3:1-19
Jesus is to be the focus of our faith because He’s greater than Moses and any other person or thing we might turn to. To shift our focus from Jesus is to drift in our faith.
Hebrews 2:5-18
Jesus became a human being to be the pioneer of our salvation. He did this by living a greater human life than we do, the righteous life that we’re supposed to live but don’t, and offering it in place of our lives on the cross, making atonement for our sin.

Jesus is greater than angels, a point that needed to be made because believers had been drifting in their faith. In making this point the author clarifies who Jesus is, who the angels are, and who we are, and warns us not to drift.
